The concept of a traditional MMORPG is dying

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

EphemeralWallaby.7643

BTW I recall over 12 years ago when someone was saying MMO’s were dying…yet here we are.

Ditto.

It also seems that every day someone here is shouting that the sky is falling. Same with every mmo forum I’ve been in. My advice: Carpe Diem. My addendum: stop looking for reasons to be miserable, life hands you enough of those already.

Also after a decade and a half of playing mmos, I personally don’t know how I would even define a “traditional” mmo… except maybe that “traditional” ones all try to do something to make themselves stand out… while exclusively derivative ones get closed down. If innovation is what makes a mmo traditional, then I don’t see traditional mmos dying any time soon.

I wanted to say this too.

Looking at other mmos, they just don’t seem to get their “bestial” races right. Its mostly still “too” human in some way, or just a neko.

Gw2 actually gave me a monstrous race to run around as

My favorite non-human race I ever played in a MMO was in Istaria. You got to play as a dragon… on all fours… your ‘equipment’ was scales… and as you leveled up you got larger and larger. Eventually you could learn to fly. It was mind-blowing.

Weeeell, technically there’s a code of conduct that applies to everyone who buys. ToS kinda stuff. It’s to prevent one entitled loudmouth from convincing 20 other paying players to “walk away”.
Players may not have the right to not be offended, because life happens, but nor does GW2 give open license to offend. And if being an offensive tea waffle is a mark of pride for someone, that person could stand to do some deep soul searching.

LOL I completely agree. That quote is a general statement about life, and not specifically being targeted towards ToS.

The world is full of offenses, it doesn’t mean we get to evict every person who offends.

A hitch in these kinds of discussions is that we didn’t buy a physical product. It’s not like a radio we bought at the store.

We bought a license. The game still belongs to ANet. That changes the the playing field a bit when it comes to discussing refunds.

The problem with that is the Charr are always armed…. not only with theirs, but they usually have other people’s arms as trophies, too.

And maybe others value their money spent differently. I put mine at how many hours did I get out of the game. If the number of hours meets or exceeds the cost of the game, then my money is well spent. Otherwise, I feel like I spent my money unwisely and feel bad moving on. Because what if in this next hour I find that special something that makes me love the game. Or maybe this time I’ll find it fun. But I have no problem playing games or doing other things that I find fun. I’ll just periodically pop into the game and see if things have changed (even if it’s only me that’s changed).

Um, yeah we’re on the same page here….

It’s not the end of the world or going to stop me from buying new things or keep me up at night kind of feeling bad, I don’t let it or the fear of it control my life. But I do still feel bad if I move on to a game that I haven’t gotten my money’s worth out of. 1, because I don’t have a whole lot of disposable income. So what money I do spend on entertainment needs to be worth it. 2, because I’m frugal. I hate spending money on things that I don’t find worth it.

Um, yeah we’re on the same page here, too. I think most people fall under this umbrella… Personally, I lead an exceptionally modest life… If you knew me in RL you’d be a bit surprised at the assumptions you’ve made about my disposable income.

And yes, I’m aware that nothing can change the fact that I spent money on something I didn’t feel as worth it. Yes, I’m aware that it’s not exactly logical to feel bad about it. But guess what? Emotions are very rarely based 100% on logic. It’s ok for emotions to be illogical.

Yeah, that’s the defining characteristic of emotions. It’s great you have that awareness… some people don’t necessarily… and those that do don’t always have it in all circumstances. I know I don’t. But, when you have that awareness, what you choose to do with it is what matters. Making decisions based solely on emotions and no logical information isn’t ideal. Knowledge is power, or so I was taught by the TV when growing up.

You can feel bad about something and not let it affect what you do. Which is what you’re assuming. That we feel bad about and yet continue playing it completely due to that feeling bad.

No, I’m suggesting that some people might continue playing because a sense of loyalty/devotion/determination grown from their monetary OR emotional OR temporal investment in the game, despite feeling bad. And, I’m recognizing that happens, and trying to spread that awareness to those whom might have not considered it at this particular time. It’s a common enough occurrence that there’s an entire fallacy named after the concept.

It’s about nurturing the awareness you already have.

Maybe Dinks hasn’t moved on because they haven’t decided what to try next so they might as well continue playing GW2 just for something to do.

Maybe.

And BTW: I still have fun in GW2. I can just see how Dinks can feel bad about the game not being worthwhile.

As can I, for him and all the other people expressing their frustrations. So, why are you trying to pick an argument with me for encouraging someone to seek something fun to do with their free time? Can’t we just be friends in these turbulent forum times?

Not everyone has as much mad money to spend as you apparently do. Mad money is money not put towards bills or put away for emergencies or retirement.

When you don’t have a lot of mad money to spend, you want the money you do spend to be worth it in the relative short term. Otherwise you are better off waiting until it would become worthwhile to buy it. And instead buy something else that is worthwhile in the short term. Like a different game or movie tickets or tickets to a game.

And when you do end up buying something that turns out to be not worthwhile, you feel bad because you feel your money was wasted or not spent wisely.

Lol, it’s not about disposable income. How much disposable income a person has makes no difference if someone’s got nothing left in the game they find entertaining. And more to the point, in today’s FtP MMO market, disposable income has little impact on the capacity to try and play other games. Going FtP or spending disposable income, either way means moving on to something that’s entertaining now.

Sore feelings over not getting your money’s worth is another matter entirely… and as I said earlier, it isn’t any reason to stay playing the game. It is a reason to keep up on news and means that can alleviate those feelings.

You’re falling prey to the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Please look it up, it’s really important in this case. And, please don’t direct your frustration towards me.

~EW

Edit: Oh, and to keep this topical…. MH you still can’t have my stuff ‘cause even a day later I’m still playing. :P

Maybe Dinks hasn’t gotten their money’s worth out of HoT yet and wants to get that worth out of the game and feels bad abandoning a game or taking a break from it when they haven’t gotten their money’s worth out of it.

As I said earlier, there’s absolutely no reason to feel bad about “abandoning a game or taking a break from it.” If he’s got nothing to do, then his money has currently bought him all he’s going to get. I’m sorry that it’s not as much as he hoped or expected (or was advertised). But, the account remains and he might find coming back later he’ll find new stuff he enjoys doing.

In the interim before that content arrives, it’s better to go do stuff that brings you joy and entertainment… as opposed to milling around waiting for that entertainment.

How do you name your characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

I do the internet equivalent of throwing darts at a dartboard:

1) I look up the etymology of words thematic to the character concept I want to create.
2) I read lore and search for common names and surnames within the lore to give me ideas for name structure.
3) I babble to myself vowels and consonants to look for combinations I like the sound of (this doesn’t require the internet, but it’s appropriate that I stare at a computer screen when I do it).
4) I do searches for various names in different languages and time periods.
5) I look up old table-top RPG character names I’ve used in the past.

And, after all of that is done and I pick the perfect name….. it’s already taken by someone else and I start the process over.

Except I paid for those new legendaries. Here-in lies the dilemma.

There’s no dilemma; you’re mixing two issues:
1) Nothing for you to currently do in game.
2) You feel slighted by ANet because of the “suspension” of legendaries. You want compensation (financial or possibly otherwise).

Neither is a reason to keep playing. The latter is the reason just to keep up on what the community and ANet discuss in the forums. If compensation for the latter occurs, that might be reason to play again in the future. Imo it’s better to play games for your current enjoyment, not potential future enjoyment.

You should never feel any shame, guilt, or resentment with moving on to other games if GW2 doesn’t provide you entertainment anymore (not saying that you specifically are feeling those things). Check back in later when it might entertain you again.

Healing Power? Whats that?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

I suppose I’ll put the question out: What changes could be made that would make you consider putting Healing Power on your build in both PvP and PvE.

For me, I already have Healing Power on my PvE build. A lot of it.

Here’s the thing… If you want to have effective condi damage, you need to stack multiple types of condis. If you want to have effective dps, you need to have multiple types of attacks, and damage from other sources than just your weapon attacks. Likewise, if you want to have good healing, you need to get it from multiple sources.

Imo many people seem to think about healing singularly… in that, one heal skill should cover all their needs. To me, that’s like saying AA is the only attack skill you ever need.

My warrior has sacrificed a fair amount of damage to stack on as much healing power, and heals from as many sources as I could think of. My build would be considered laughable by many people. BUT, I can survive stuff most people can’t even fathom. To me, it doesn’t matter how fast you kill something, it only matters that when the dust settles if you’re the one still alive.

You’re comparing being locked out of a feature you PAYED for and being given free items in game. The fact is that there is no reasonable reason to not allow a paid account instant access.

You didn’t pay for a feature. You payed for a license to play the game they created with every restriction they deem necessary within that license. This is why they can ban you for breaking the terms of service, despite you “paying” for it.

Let me repeat that: You don’t own the game. You own a license to play the game. They set the terms of that license. It’s your responsibility to read up on a game before you jump feet-first into it.

Welcome to the new age of gaming, ‘cause that’s how it works now: the “feature you payed for” included the restrictions that came with it.

Sorry to go all Matrix on you, but everything everyone does in GW2 is potential metrics for them to pull usable data from. Outfits bought off the gem store, armors bought in complete sets or partial sets from vendors, popularity/frequency of certain equipment being worn, etc. If they did it right, they could/should pull all sorts of useful trending data.

At the end of the day, they’re a business, and money is their bottom line. So, they’re going to be looking at everything they can.

I’m sorry, but you’re proposing they do a public experiment with their income that would result in information they’ve likely already obtained privately and through other means for the sole purpose of alleviating your frustration with their business model. That doesn’t seem unrealistic to you?

So rather than confuse me they get absolutely zero dollars from me.

Well played?

And, from someone else they got all the dollaz from them. If enough people are willing to give up all the dollaz as opposed to none of the dollaz like you did, then they make more. Likely more than if both groups of people only gave up some of the dollaz. That’s where pricing analysis and market research come into play… like any successful business does.
