It could be programmed like the birthday blaster cake… it will not override any food you’re currently using, and any food eaten while it’s up will override it.

I want Tengu as the next playable race!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

I realize that “most likely” doesn’t translate to “likely.” No one is saying that Anet is going to for sure add a new playable race with this next expansion or even the one after that. I’m just saying that it would be a really cool way to make an expansion pack truly feel like an expansion. And the Tengu would be the best and “most likely” candidate.

But honestly (and I’m not taking a direct shot at you, Ariurotl. I’ve heard this excuse several times before), I absolutely hate it when people use that as an argument for why Anet won’t put in a new race. “It requires too much WORK! It’s a lot of WORK to add a new race! They aren’t gonna put that kind of WORK into this game!” Isn’t that, you know, Anet’s job as a game developer? To work on games? Like God forbid Anet actually puts hard work into this next expansion.

Yes, adding a new race will most assuredly not be a simple task. There was a little hope when they changed the Tengu animations from the Charr ones, but there would still be a lot more work to be done to actually make them fully playable. But you know what? EVERYTHING takes work. And It’s that kind of work that many of the players would love and appreciate. I would hope that with future expansions (as Sartharina pointed out) Anet will add some content that you don’t necessarily have to be level 80 with awesome gear to enjoy. Having a new race to start the game with would be a FANTASTIC way to do this! Enjoyable for brand new players and veteran players who want something new (not grindy and hardcore) to experience.

The hard work in question is the dev’s ability to keep from quitting in despair, because they’d know they should be working on Skritt as a playable race instead.

Armor swapping

EphemeralWallaby.7643

You’d still have to get out of combat, though.

…snip…

Better yet: A system that saves traits, skills, armor and weapons, then lets you reload that set. If a piece is missing, it just isn’t loaded.

I remember The Secret World having this feature, and I remember loving it. Since I enjoy playing around with various builds, I personally would find it an incredibly useful feature to swap a saved weapon/armor/trait set with a single click (out of combat, of course).

Just like tSW, you’d have to be able to save the weapons/armor in it’s own special ‘inventory’ separate from normal inventory… and you’d probably need to cap the total number of loaded builds to two (the one that’s currently active, and the one that’s ‘saved’)

For efficiency leveling in PvE, maybe something along the lines of mixing soldiers with zerker’s? That way you’ve got that higher dps, but you can also take hits.

For the utilities, I agree signets are a good start, then switch out for other utilities as you think they’d become useful (shouts come to my mind here).

For the Traits, I think the Discipline line is a must for the Warrior’s Sprint and Brawler’s Recovery. When my roommate focused on quickly leveling his warrior in PvE, he found great use of going axe/axe and capitalizing on the trait Axe Mastery in the Strength line (not saying it’s the best, but that’s what he found worked for him).

scrapper rune damage reduction is multiplicative
ie stacks with protection to give 37.7% reduction, rather than 40% reduction

check out mussel soup though (or any other food made with mussels). I use that stuff whenever I really want to facetank something. stack protection and mussel food and tank like a boss in full marauder’s

I had no idea it was multiplicative… huh… thanks for the head’s up.

TY that does look very interesting. Will definitely test it. I have since rediscovered this link as well.

WIth the the idea of combining max critical with lifesteal/Omnoberry pie to heal while fighting swarms of mobs. Going to take a close look at both.

No worries.

The Omnomberry Pie is very inspiring… I hadn’t considered it, tbh. I usually go with Mango Pie. But if you can get the Omnomberry pie to proc at least every 3 sec because of a higher crit chance and attack speed (I’m thinking of axes especially for that), then it is definitely preferable just for the healing alone.

Thank you, you’ve given me something to ponder.

PvE tanky gear choice

EphemeralWallaby.7643

Just playing with a bit of numbers, I was wondering what a ‘reasonable’ consistent damage reduction a guardian can get. What I figure is if you’re wielding a hammer, you can get 60% damage reduction nearly 100% of the time, and retaliation 3/5 of the time…

The base shell of the build would need the following (caveat: the equipment is just a placeholder so the rune set could be input): http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vVAQFASEOCxiHRJTrjRAkp+A-ThQPABAo+jz7PAA-e

You need those specific traits in order to guarantee your symbol stay up all the time, and give you the opportunity to use Mighty Blow for the combo finisher Retaliation.

After that, I think there needs to be a bit of a focus on boon duration and condition cleanse in order to help keep Protection and Hunter’s Fortification up respectively… but other than a head nod towards those things, I think this shell can invite a few different build/gear variances to fit play styles. Personally, I’d probably pile on a bit of the Cleric’s gear for heal sustain… but I could see full Zerker’s being employed to good effect, too.

One obvious drawback is that you’ll be employing the AA most of the time, meaning utility choices will need to be brief/insta-cast (and combat could become a bit monotonous).

Thoughts on potential? How would you fill this shell of a build out if you wanted to try it?

Cut it with the excess ellipses. You don’t get a flameshield, that was one of the worst attempts at math I’ve ever seen.

There are 9 classes, so for a given class there should be 4 favorable matchups, and 4 unfavorable matchups in a scenario of pure rock/paper/scissors counters (ignoring the complexity inherent to build diversity).

Those are my pondering periods.

How far guardians have fallen

in Guardian

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

One thing I’ve been pondering lately…

…there are 9 classes in GW2. If all things were ‘properly balanced’ and equal then that should mean each class should win a pvp battle roughly 1/ 9 8 of the time…

…which means that many of those playing PvP across the board will feel their class incredibly underpowered and imbalanced because they lose significantly more often than win. And, many of those people will cry for nerfs or buffs according to their personal tastes….

…which those kinds of cries are happening seemingly in most/every class subsection.

Not saying it’s true, but some food for thought…

…and I’m sure I’m going to be schooled about how my math is wrong. /flameshield

~EW

edit: thinking about this further, I guess I’m looking at it from a All v All standpoint (there was another mistake there with the 9 instead of 8 above, thanks KC for pointing that out). And, that’s obviously not how the matches are fought. Ah well… an all-out fight between all the classes at once would be fun to watch!

Thats how i play….but the way i play annoys many player..bcs im camping spots where more than 5 monster appear….and in worst case these r needed for quests..and then..when i see an event..i enjoy attacking all the wave..but if the others r not so fast me..they get no reward from the event…..i feel bad bcs i hurt others

I’ve definitely been there… what I tend to do these days is when I’m going after groups I can easily kill, but others are there, I’ll get in my hits then disengage from combat to make sure the other people can get in their tags. I’ll then step back in if it looks like they’re having difficulty.

Or, I switch to single-target attacks once I’ve made my tags. You don’t get that thrill of wading into battle, for sure… but if you’re there camped, and they’re passing through, then it’s not that you’ll need to do it all the time. And, if it’s an event instead, then it’s over soon enough.

PvE tanky gear choice

EphemeralWallaby.7643

So fellow build-a-holic To be honest after many hours spend in game and builder, tweaking all the things I’ve came to something that I’m content with in terms of traits and default skills selection. SoJ have it’s stellar place in this, though I’ve dropped Perfect Inscriptions as rest of radiance line just didn’t bring anything so worthwile as to guarantee it’s place … and perfect insc. were good only for 2% extra reduction and nice overall upgrade of healing skill. Though I must say after you’ve mentioned them, I’m now looking with great interest at scrapper runes. Actually it would be easier to talk about gear in context of actual trait selection so it’s something like THIS. (trap heal switchable to meditation one depending on the situation and dragons maw as ulti until renewed focus is required to survive) With hunter’s fortification and all available cleansing we can count on 20% constant reduction among other perks.

20% constant reduction with consistent cleanse is very nice, indeed.

That 2% is definitely not worth it when taken by itself agreed, but I find myself attracted to the Signets of Resolve and Courage when I’m going full-bore healing power… so having that cleanse and heal trigger every 8 sec on top of the 2% extra became worth it. I’m also a sucker for signets, lol.

What I’m considering (with some extra ideas taken straight from your input) is closer to THIS
By sacrificing almost all the healing power we gain significantly grater dmg and almost 5k more health. The whole starting point for this is personal experience in which I’m having no problems with sustain but my health jumps up and down to much for my tastes (and also my damage is fairly lacking to say the least even for someone who is not in a hurry so I’m mostly switiching parts of nomad armor to zerk anyway). I’m actually pondering if that extra health buffer doesn’t in the end increase sustain (more freedom to survive to next cooldown of heal and more time for VoR per second heal). I was curious if anyone tried it before, but I’ll probably check it myself anyway

Oooo, I really like that second build, and I think you’re definitely making up for the lack of healing power with the 5k health and extra power. The extra health buffer is always nice… imo it gives you more time to cleanse and/or recover from spike damage… and is also necessary if you’re giving up some of the ehp from healing power.

If I may make a suggestion? For your amulet, consider exchanging for a Captain’s stat (Charisma / Third-Place Medal / Protomatter Chain). You’ve now lost nearly all your healing power, but you’ve grown your base crit chance to 19% which opens up the ‘on crit’ sigils for viable use. Sigil of Blood is the one that comes to mind to me… to regain a bit of that lost healing, and gain a bit more damage.

…and taking that idea even further (you’ve lit my brain on fire), it opens the possibility of exchanging Virtues for Honor… especially because you’re wielding that mace, but also because it gives a few more heals from more sources to make up for the lacking healing power. I suppose it depends on how much you trigger your Virtues whether it’d be worth trying.

*Regarding traits choice I’m actually still torn between hunter’s determination and bulwark for second column major in dragonhunter tree.

IMO Hunter’s Determination is the better choice. I also think Zealot’s Aggression also has potential as it keeps enemies from quickly leaving your mace/symbol range; and likewise slows them down getting into melee range when they’re charging in (so more time with the bow). It synergizes with Pure of Sight.

Very, very nice builds. They both look like fun.

I’ve fallen in so much love with my Warrior, I’m currently working at turning him into my main… a position my Guard has held for 3 years. I really wish I’d tried a Warrior sooner.

Like other professions, you’ll see most of your viable attacks being isolated to several traits, weapons, and utilities and never see use of other weapons/traits/utilities. (In the case of warrior, you’re gonna be using a lot of greatsword for PvE)

And, I’m a counterexample to this. I’m running an often-dismissed regeneration build with a Hammer/Rifle. My Warrior is an unconquerable walking god of a Charr. (I’m still tweaking the build, but it’s a lot of fun to play.)

PvE tanky gear choice

in Guardian

EphemeralWallaby.7643

@ EphemeralWallaby right now I’m wearing my cleric/knight set on Guard and I’m thinking exactly about low total health: in things like 77th fractal I can certainly sustain even in offensive rotation against mossman but there are times when my hp goes extremely low. Not mentioning (rare) situations when half of team gets downed due to no surviavbility and even minimal lag – getting them back is a pain as in that moment using most of my mitigation/healing means stopping reviving and I can’t really just stay there with such small hp pool.

Unfortunately there’s always going to be those times… and that’s where build tweaking comes in. It’s not a popular choice, but for a little while I was utilizing Signet of Judgement, Runes of the Scrapper, and Perfect Inscriptions trait for a nice 19% damage reduction… I was even considering switching to hammer for the perpetual protection… meaning I’d have 52% damage reduction nearly all the time… but then I got distracted with other builds… ‘cause I’m a build-aholic. (thinking about it now, there’s potential in that being a way to sustain w/o Healing Power… gunna have to give this some thought now, lol)

I’m actually curious which class you are talking about (depending on which section of forum you’ll visit, I have seen people swear by their eles/revs/druids/chronos and even more common stating that “other” class has certainly op sustain/tankiness and should be nerfed :P)

Lol, in this case I’m only speaking from my personal experience, but I was thinking about the Necro. IME other classes can sustain well w/o any healing power only if they’re intermittently on the front lines… but my (non-reaper) necro utilizes life steal in many ways (LS barely benefits from HP, so I didn’t bother with it at all)… My necro can front-line longer than many of my guard builds… not all, but many.

P.S. If I came across as someone who don’t like zerker then I need to add: certainly zerker has it uses and I like it for most tasks; it’s probably just preemptive knee jerk reaction as half of all threads I’ve read here come down to
Q: valid question about something more or less theoretical, for example “what’s the exact damage of boss X and is there way to build to not be ohko’ed”
A: “git gud and wear zerker”

Zerker does have it’s uses, I completely agree. But, the people who are “zurker or gtfo” are the people I see going down in waves while fighting Jormag or Tequatl, while I usually remain at 3/4 health or more, even with 12k hitpoints compaired to their 20k+. And, that’s when I chuckle a little bit.

On a little side note, the place I like to test the potential survivablity of any build I’m working on is to go to the Southsun Cove and try and solo the Karka Veterans (hopefully no zerg is meandering about). If I can solo them w/o much difficulty, then I feel I’ve got a solid build going. If I go down, well then it’s back to the drawing board. I’m sure other people have other places they prefer (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised to be flamed for it), but I’ve found ’em to be a good litmus test in most cases.

You get over 150 bags of loot through the personal story (as well as a hand full of crafting bags)… so it’s an option if you’re out of bandit keys or shovels for SW.

I highly doubt it’s best practice, but you can also go kill enemies that drop Frayed Garment, Torn Garment, Frayed Rag, and Torn Rag. All those can salvage into linen. (for the Torn versions, use a crude salvage kit… less chance of getting the upgrade to silk)

Personally, I don’t think there’s longevity in playing only one game at a time. If things are getting bleak for you, take a break and come back when you feel it’ll be fresh for you again.

For a n=1 example, I spent the last 2 years completely ignoring the Personal Story after i’d done it a few too many times, even though narrative is one of my favorite things to explore in a MMO. Now, I’m going through all the various personal story options I can, and it’s like I’m going through it for the first time. It’s great! So, maybe check out some of the stuff you got sick of at one point, but haven’t played in a really long time?

I’m not saying abandon GW2 (I love GW2, so I’d never say that!!!), but definitely look at some other games to play to mix things up. It’ll keep you from inadvertently binging and becoming sick of just one thing.

~EW

edit: also, there’s always an influx (or trickle) of new players… so, one way of making fresh the old content you might not have touched in a very long time would be to show some newbies the ropes.

Movement Speed Buff for DH

Before I get into the meat of my post, I want to establish that I agree that the Guard in general can use some type of speed buff option that isn’t the staff.

One alternative option I highlighted in a thread I created a year ago is to use the Sigil of Speed; if you’re willing to give up a sigil slot for it…. for PvE and WvW of course…

There’s plenty of trash mobs around everywhere you go in PvE and WvW, so that sigil can easily let you keep 2-3 minutes of swiftness up consistently.

I’m not saying this is the best solution… but it is another option that largely gets ignored. Personally I’ve often found it to be preferential over runes, depending on what build I’m currently running.

Sorry I don’t have a suggestion for an alternative in PvP.

Are raids good or bad for MMOs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

Most problems concerning raids people are community created though. Having content for 10 players where these players have to cooperate in order to beat it is not the problem.

But raids people always create kitten flinging contests where one side has the craving to always feel superior (I’m Elite because I raid) and the other side continuously belittles the first group as a bunch of no-lifes.

In the, end you basically have two groups telling each other how they have to enjoy the game to have fun, kitten it!

Fixed that for ya’

Not all content is meant for all players… if it’s not your thing, no worries… it’s not my thing either… but that doesn’t mean it still isn’t one of many ways to foster community. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

In my opinion, most of the hate the raid gets stems for the fact that there is not much to do for players who enjoy harder content but cannot muster groups of 10 players to raid (or dislike scheduled content in general).

Have you watched the recent video by Mikei the Mighty showing off the Spirit Vale? One of the commentaries that’s made is that (to them) it seems a lot more PUG friendly than other MMO raids. This gives me hope, because even though I don’t raid, it still looks like a blast to try.

From what I’ve seen so far, there is an intention to make raids in GW2 be different in concept and execution than the ‘classic’ setup established by WoW.

Either you raid or you farm HoT forever. Not exactly engaging.

I do neither, and I’m still having a blast in the game.

Even with the dynamic leveling system being funky, it’s still there… which does make the entire game potential end-level content… at least for me it still works that way. I don’t feel choosing to grind anything until you’re sick of it is a healthy way to approach any game, even if the option is there in spades.

And, here I was hoping this thread was about sharing a good joke:

“How many hero points does it take for a scrapper to screw in a lightbulb?”

Are raids good or bad for MMOs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I recently bumped into a video on youtube where someone stated that raids are actually bad for any MMO (including WoW). At first I was quite surprised, but then I got his point.

For the majority of people the actual fun when playing an MMO doesn’t come from end-game. It’s about progression, diving into a world where there is always something new to explore and meaningful things to do. It’s about the journey and not the destination.

Guild Wars 2 got this very right at launch but instead of improving the actual MMO (VR) aspect they listened to a minority of (very vocal) people and went to destroy what they have created.

Imagine for a moment we had an instant level 80 raid lobby (similar to HotM) where you would start out in fully ascended gear with whatever stat combination you desire and start your raid progression. Why don’t we have this? Because it would be too obvious how little content raids actually add to the game.

This game does not need end-game content that forces you to replay old content over and over again to gear up for a specific role in a raid. It needs new content that we are happy to explore without having a particular destination in mind.

Let the journey continue!

One of the primary functions of MMOs is socializing and building community through game play. Raids are one of many ways that promote this. So, they are healthy for MMOs.

Why no condi reduction stat?

I understand that but there’s a difference between “Vitality is a defense” and “Vitality is a defense against condition damage” since the latter is a statement of design.

Lucky for us Vitality is both those statements. Which just goes to show how awesome it is!

Mike O'Brien AMA now on Reddit!

Maybe dumb question but why not here on official forum? I am sure you wait for that question.

The formatting on reddit makes an AMA work better in that system. No preference, just a matter of functionality for this sort of short-term project.

Is there any way it can be transcribed to a forum post when it’s done (even locked, I’m fine with)? It’s just that I’m not a Reddit user, and I also like the layout of these forums much more than Reddit.

I could try to do that, sure, but it wouldn’t be able to happen today. I like the idea, or maybe a “highlight reel.”

You rock, Gaile! Thank you.

Maybe she’s the first Sylvari to go to seed, despite being secondborn?

There’s also the possibility of grafting. To my knowledge no one has said Sylvari can’t be grafted like normal plants. I can definitely see the Inquest being curious enough to try.

Also, whether or not Vitality is a good defense (and better/worse than direct mitigation) is debatable.

DGraves, you’ve said it isn’t. I think it is at least on par. At this we’re going to have to agree to disagree… because from my perspective Vitality = extra time alive (and the same can be said for mitigation)… If other more savvy people wish to try, I hope they do.
