AMD slashed the price because, although they’ve very close, the 970 is usually seen edging in front overall in benchmarks.

Incorrect, they trade blows. If anything, the 290x is ahead in more benchmarks.

It’s also much more recent and its’ part of the current generation of nvidia cards, so there are a myriad of small pluses that stack up (particularly in effects).

Such as? The only thing a 970 really has over a 290x is power consumption, and it’s more then worth the slightly higher cost since you can buy nonreference 290xs for as low as $240 new, compared to $300 for a 970.

The 290x would be a decent choice if you couldn’t afford the 970 and don’t mind the increased (substantially) fan noise or power consumption.

Even if I could drop $300 on a 970 I’d get a 290x all day long; it’s the much better deal overall. Fan noise is a nonissue, especially with a decent case, and the power consumption difference still won’t make up for the much higher entry cost of a 970.

Support my idea in the signature! Since reducing price/refund will be a logistics nightmare, they should just give the existing players 1600 gems. Effectively, that makes the xpac $30.

That assumes you wanted to drop $20 in gems. That’s no different from Just dropping $50 on the expansion in my mind, since there’s nothing worth spending real money on in the gem shop imo

Let’s look at WoW for a moment shall we? Keeping things as cheap as possible the core game costs $19.99, and the lowest price for a subscription is $11.50, so if you play for a year that’s $157.99. This is ignoring expansions, the higher priced subscription plans, and so on.

GW2 is a one time purchase of $40, $20, or $10 depending on when you got it. $157.99 for a year versus a flat $40. The $50 price tag is fine.

What an asinine comparison. Just because it’ll cost more to play WoW for a year doesn’t magically make this expansion worth $50.

I just hope there’s an expansion price for people who already OWN the game, why they had a popup in-game for players who already have the game is beyond me, that one should have shown the expansion price (without the price for the full game since I already own it). This is just an expansion, like Eye of the North, EoTN didn’t include the base game, Factions did but it also had 2 character slots and 2 new professions. HoT is not that type of expansion, it’s a simple content expansion that simply adds the areas and a lot of features we had in gw1 maguuma area… I would have prepurchased at $30 but at $50 I’d rather get a full game and wait on HoT until it was on sale.

At this price I’ll be getting Fallout4 instead of an expansion.

$49.99 is the Price of just the Expansion. The Core Game is an extra bonus for new players and they get it for free. This was already verified by Anets Twitter.

It’s $50 for the game+expansion, or just the expansion of you paid for the game, no matter how you try to spin it. Basically, you get less for more if you’re a loyal customer. It’s a ripoff based on that alone.

I’d normally advocate an equivalent AMD card, but the 970 will match most of their beasts in a more elegant manner – it’s a single GPU (not 2 bolted together), it’s got relatively low power consumption, lower temps and is therefore quieter. So for the time being it’s unreservedly the best card for your money right now, hands down.

A 290x gets you much, much more for your dollar, especially since you can get them for $220-240.

Also, look at amazon for used GPUs, you can get an r9 280x for about 120 shipped now.

Watch /r/hardwareswap as well, that’s where I got mine. $120 is at the low end though, on average they go for like $135-140.

And with the new AMD 300 series launching on the 16th, I expect those prices to drop even more. 260x is 100% slower then a 270/270x, which is 100% slower then a 280x, which is 100% slower then a 290×...ect. New a 260x goes for 139.99.

What? A 290x is like 1/3 faster then a 280x and a 280x is only like 25-30% above a 270×. It’s not nearly that big of a gap.

Dueling as a Guild Hall Feature?

Personally, I’d much rather have an open world implementation. It gives a lot more area/many more places to fight and will likely be much more varied then any arena they would put in the guild halls. Additionally, a big part of dueling to me is that it can be used to kill time when waiting for world bosses or whatever.

This would be cool, assuming it used your PvE gear, but I’d rather see actual open world dueling.

IMHO, if WvW is your goal buying an expensive GPU like a GTX970 is a waste of cash cause you wont see much of an improvement between a something like a 270x/gtx460 era GPU and the newer GTX970.

That being said, if you’re looking at a $160-170 270x you should probably go look around for a used 280x because it’ll likely be cheaper- they go for $140 all day long. Mine was only $120 shipped. Even in the $100 realm a used 7950 is going to be the way to go.

AMD cards are dirt cheap used right now, so they’re really worth checking out.

Please explain how this is true. Removing AoE caps would give bigger groups even more damage and allow them to blanket a larger area with insta-death AoE damage – killing smaller groups even faster.

You literally just agreed with him. Like what the kittening hell I feel like i’m in another dimension.

Apparently you are because that was the opposite of agreement. Let me try to break it down in small pieces:

1) OP says: AoE cap favors zergs and this is a problem, so remove the AoE cap.

2) I say: removing the AoE cap will favor zergs even more, which will not solve the supposed problem. Removing AoE cap is bad.

You don’t need to play this to realize that it’s honestly pretty bad. It’ll so easy to escape now that it’s not even funny, and whoever you’re fighting can’t do anything about it, even if they try to cripple/whatever you. It takes a fair bit of “play” out of the game.

ALL the questions...

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fermi.2409

Fermi.2409

1. A lot of the low-level resources are worth quite a bit (considering how easy they are to get hold of). If I take my L80 toon and farm them, what’s the etiquette there? Like, should I back off if lower level players are obviously trying to get somewhere (xp-wise) with their toon? For instance, if I see a low-level toon (judging by how long it takes them to defeat a mob foe) in the bandit caverns in Queensdale, should I take break? Like, what’s the general vibe in the community there?

Just do whatever you want, it doesn’t matter

Let me rephrase that: I DO back off. Do I need to, or am I just overthinking it?

You’re overthinking it.

2. I mainly play (so far) a Hammer Guardian. What use is the Elite skills ‘Renewed Focus’? When is there a benefit to ‘standing still and not taking damage’ as opposed to ‘moving away from the source of the damage’? I mean, after 2 seconds you’re back in the same situation anyway, right? I think this question shows how little understanding that I have of the basic combat mechanics.

You can move while using Renewed Focus

3. I’ve started playing (lately) with a Necro and Thief (like, using my N and T toons, not teaming up with other players of those professions), and the Thief seems MUCH squishier, even though he technically has a higher armor class/rating. What gives?

Necro has more HP and Death Shroud. Thief is supposed to be squishy. Armor rating isn’t everything.

4. In the Black Lion Shop: Is the Watchwork Mining Pick the only tool that has a chance to create drops (i.e. the watchwork sprockets or whatever they’re called)?

Yes

5. If I buy an armor from the Black Lion Shop, does using it unlock it for the wardrobe (like the zenith skins)? And does this count for the talking Golem backpack as well, if so? And do they take a transmutation charge upon subsequent applications (unlike the Zenith skins)? (sorry I can’t think of how to word that properly)

Yes to the first, and I do believe it requires transmute charges to apply the skin after the first time.

6. I want to start doing PvP and really getting into WvW. How can I practice PvP without actually doing PvP? I don’t think it’s fair on the folks that actually play that stuff seriously should have to put up with my eternal noobness.

Just queue up, you should be put in with people at least decently close to your skill level.

And before you say “WvW”, the same applies there: Why should other players be forced to deal with my inability to play the game at their level? I accept that I will get PMed heaps for my nubbishness – how do I know good advice from trolling?

No one will care in WvW, although I’d recommend against bringing a sub-80 character in there. That being said, you won’t really learn the sort of stuff that you need in sPvP in WvW, assuming you’re zerging.

7. I have NO idea of team dynamics. Should I rez someone or kill the enemies (thereby rezzing them AND removing the source of the damage)? What’s more polite? Does it depend on the situation, and if so, how so? As a Guardian, should I be healing others, or is that offensive (because we all have heals, and I should be DPSing)?

8. Okay this will take a while to ask, so here’s a shorter version of it to see if it’s worth the time for you to read: “Questions about the final mission”.

Do an LFG saying “everyone welcome” or whatever, then just tell the people you haven’t done it before. There’s pretty much a 100% chance that no one will care/they’ll tell you what to do if you ask about it or up front about it.

In general, you should tell the people you’re running the dungeon with that you’ve never done it before. It’s just polite.

9. I don’t intend to do Fractals for a while. With that in mind: how important is Ascended Gear? I have my main all decked out in Exotic, and it seems to be doing fine for me. I may have answered my own question there, but I’m always open to more info.

Exotics are fine until you need AR and you need Ascended weapons/armor to fit it into.

I hate the aegis visual effect, nothing more to say.

No man, this is ok, because you can still see your weapons if you look around the aegis!

Nah bruh, it block the weapon completely, here’s a screenshot of the one angle where it does that to prove my point

Agreed, keybinds should be saved per character, I’ve been wanting that since the game launched

As long as it’s optional. Having to change my keybinds every time I made a new character was something I hated in other games

What GPU do you have? Is it running at PCI 1x or 16x? Check with GPU-Z and make sure it’s at 16×. An easy way to tell would be if the GPU isn’t in the sky closest to the CPU.

I like JPs a lot. They’re really fun. I’ve honestly never had any issues with the camera, even with my max height Human male (although I’ll generally use my minimum height Asuran female/Human female characters). The only one that really seems to have issues is the underground one in LA

now that i hear in the game that the balance between the CPU and the GPU is bad
the card is to weak for the CPU ??

It’s the other way around; that GPU is more then powerful enough for GW2, but you’ll need a new CPU to get the best experience possible.

If you have to specifically position your camera to avoid your screenshot being ruined by a shield, I consider that a problem.

You have it backwards. You have to perfectly position the camera to have Aegis “ruin” the screenshot; there are many more angles where you can’t even see it then ones where it will play any role.

Even if it wasn’t position just so, the shield would still be there, and I’d still consider it a problem.

Good for you. That’s not any sort of argument, though.

And I don’t consider it unfair. It just puts aegis in line with all the other buffs with subtle and, more importantly, optional graphic effects. Consider for a moment if might made your arm catch fire. There are a lot of people who liked fiery edgy demon builds who would love that. But what about everyone else? Then consider that for warriors, might was on permanently.

Optional is the name of the game here. People should be able to turn stuff off if they want to. They can do whatever they want with their game. However, requesting that something be removed whether everyone else likes it or not is ridiculous.

The point I was trying to make is that, even if it’s not perfectly overlapping, its still a distracting nuisance that you can’t ever make go away

Sure, when you hold it at an angle so it specifically blocks whatever.

That being said, sure, some people don’t like it. However, plenty of people do; asking for it to be removed is grossly unfair to all of them.

Yeah, of course it’s blocked by Aegis. That’s because you’re looking directly at it. Turn the camera a slight amount and you can see it fine, like you can see in my screenshot.

What if in HoT shield receives some serious buffs such that it becomes meta? Would you still be ok with the effects of aegis?

Yeah. I honestly sort of like the effect on top of my Shield. I guess it could be annoying if I used Cragstone or something but it’s still not too huge of a deal.

What if focus becomes meta?

It already is…

Would you, who spent a lot of money on the anomaly, be ok with it being permanently covered up with aegis?

Aegis doesn’t even cover up focuses: http://tinyurl.com/p7cboxf

It really truly needs to go, no matter how you look at it.

Not in the slightest. At most they should add a toggle. Overall, the way your backpiece gets sucked onto your shield when sheathing/unsheathing weapons is way more annoying.

I’m running with 2GB video memory, 8 GB RAM, 3.4 GHz processor, and I typically can get ~20 fps on boss fights with maximum settings. Lowering the graphics settings does not change this.

Specific specs are much more useful then RAM amounts and processor speed; those numbers are completely irrelevant without knowing what parts you actually have in your computer.

Your best bet is to make up your keybinds based on what will work best for you. Most of the keybinds I see people mentioning sound awful to me (I could never use them) but they work well for those people. It’s a pretty individual thing.

There’s no real reason for 16GB of RAM today, though, as long as gaming is your primary concern. 8 is plenty.

I think I’ll just end up driving down and picking up a 4690k+mobo next weekend or something. Assuming Skylake really isn’t much of a boost, that is, which I’ll double check when I set my computer back up.

Even with 40%+ performance of Haswell over SB, it’s still only a little over 50% as expensive, and a 4.5ish GHz 2500k would still be nice boost over my i3.

Honestly, I’m only really thinking about it because it would be a good performance boost at a rather cheap price. If I don’t go for it I’ll just wait for Skylake, there’s no reason to go Haswell with Skylake so close to release imo.
