Just for the record, the tower/computer and CPU are entirely different things. A CPU is a part of the computer, not the whole thing.
All it takes is a decent sweetfx profile to fix everything wrong with how the game looks. Demanding that they redo everything in the game because you don’t like how it looks is a bit ridiculous.
For normal games though, it’s all about the GPU. Budget on the CPU, splurge on the GPU, you’ll get better performance.
You really don’t want to skimp on the CPU, though. A good CPU will last longer then a good GPU, so you’re much better off getting a decent i5 and spending less on your GPU for now, and upgrading the GPU later if need be- a new GPU is much cheaper then a CPU+mobo, anyways.
I’ve only had my computer for 2 years and I’m already looking at getting an i5-6600k+mobo when they’re available. If I had an i5-3570k instead, I would be set.
I want to see a firefight-style mode where specific sets of mobs/bosses spawn and teams compete to see who can get the farthest. It gives challenging content and competition all at once.
I don’t see how a desktop would give a worse experience, I’ve always played on a desktop and I couldn’t imagine having to play on a laptop.
Because he has a decent laptop and he’s looking to build a desktop without a graphics card.
You can build a desktop PC for under $700 that will crush gw2. Here is an example micro-atx build. The processor is known for being easy to overclock, which will allow you to achieve 4.0 to 4.5 ghz without too much effort, the GTX 750 TI can easily handle the graphics of this game, and with an SSD to reduce load times you’ll have everything you need to run gw2 at high settings for the foreseeable future.
That H55i is a waste of money, go for a 212 Evo instead. That power supply is way too expensive for that build and that GPU is hella overpriced. 0/10 would not recommend that build in the slightest, you’re not getting nearly as much as you can for your money.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4mLR8d
That’s a much better way to spend your $550.
I don’t understand why anyone would not want a real graphics card if they are going to be gaming. I understand APU or integrated graphics get the job done but its not ever going to be as good as a real gfx card.
Because he’s trying to save money. Any computer he’s going to build without a GPU is going to be inferior to his laptop, so it’s pretty much just a waste of money and he’s better off getting peripherals for his laptop since he’s worried about breaking it.

if u go desktop route, u still need i5 quad cores and ssd hardrive.
What? No you don’t. A desktop with a G3258 and a decent GPU will run this game fine. An SSD would be nice, but it’s hardly necessary.
Don’t waste your money on some crappy desktop, it’s just going to give you a worse game experience. If you are actually worried about your laptop’s keyboard (which you shouldn’t be), buy a quality mechanical keyboard and call it a day.
If you’re willing to drop the money on a whole new (albeit bad) computer for GW2, you should be able to buy a Ducky or Code keyboard, or maybe a Logitech G710.
Is the game running on the Intel integrated GPU instead of your 860M?
You can get used 7950s for $100. If you’re after new stuff, I think you’re looking at a 750ti/260x/270 for $100.
i just like this model especially because it has nice cooling, and we all(?) know what the r9 290 does
Honestly, most nonreference coolers will be fine. The Twin Frozr cards are pretty recommended as well.
also if you want a cheaper ssd http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ssd (it might not be as fast but as they say the great improvement is when you go from hdd to ssd)
Although I actually bought a 128 GB Crucial M4 last night, Samsung SSDs are still my go-to recommendations, especially with a $1000 budget, since they’re pretty much the best ones to get.
Indeed, I was just trying to keep it within budget. 290Xs do go for ~270 on sale, though, so the TC could watch /r/buildapcsales until something nice popped up.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DXTgxr
+Windows 8 for $15 from here.
If you need KB/M/Headphones, buy cheap/crappy ones until you can get a quality Logitech mouse+a Ducky/Coolermaster/Das/etc mechanical keyboard and some decent headphones.

So, the OP’s idea of fun is immersion and he doesn’t see why he can’t run dungeons in a different way and still keep-up with others financially.
I don’t see what is wrong with that POV?
The problem with that point of view is that he wants to kitten others just because they’re playing in a way that he doesn’t like. It’s hugely selfish and utterly ridiculous.
That’s not really how I read it.
He literally came out and said that that’s why he made the topic.
And it is a problem because it is ruining the way I prefer the game to be played. I prefer game systems to be immersive. Usain Bolt can’t do 1mile dashes in real life so neither should my character. And yes I can make a LFG for “no swiftness no running” but I hate the fact that everyone who will use swiftness and mobility skills, will make so much more money than me.
Dear lord, literally “I don’t like that people can play a way I don’t like, nerf them to my level!”. The ridiculousness is real.
I don’t think it was stupid in Smash. A band-aid solution maybe, but it needed to be done. Or something did.
And why, exactly, was that? Why would you purposely limit player movement to make it worse?
sc2 = rts
im comparing everything i have to gw2
Just for the record, that 8370 is going to chug badly in busy multiway SC2 matches as well (4 people); smaller matches aren’t an issue, but bigger ones are.
thats exactly how I feel about you when i say 99% of my other games run perfect and nobody listens to me.
Everyone is listening to you even though that fact is 100% irrelevant. GW2 isn’t any of those games.
But Arena net has to be an odd duck and make a cpu heavy game. So when they do this they need to wake up and realize not everyone has Intel.
Never? It’s not like the game is coded for Intel or some other nonsense along those lines. The game is CPU heavy because it’s an MMO; that’s the nature of the beast. Similarly to RTS games, when there are many things on the screen that aren’t particularly hard to draw, performance will be CPU limited.
You could pick different races and travel to find each other; it would take 3-5 minutes to meet up at the absolute most, and you’d only be going through cities, so you wouldn’t encounter anything that could make the trip difficult.
If they want to be Intel fanboys let them but there is no excuse.
No excuse for what, exactly? The game requires single core performance. Your CPU lacks single core performance. It’s as simple as that.
In my eyes they did the job half right. Left me in the dust. Does not feel good.
You should be blaming AMD, not Anet. They’re the ones who decided to focus on moar coarz instead of higher performance per core.
In any case, I feel like you’re just whining at this point and ignoring what everyone is saying. It’s annoying, honestly.
As most people have figured out over the lifespan of the game, GW2 is horribly optimized for AMD processors. It runs so much better on an Intel.
And I wouldn’t say it’s all AMD’s fault, as certain processors of theirs that SHOULD be able to handle the game just fine don’t seem to perform very well.
There really is no getting around the fact that GW2 is horribly optimized for AMD processors
The game isn’t “horribly optimized for AMD processors”, it just heavily relies on single core performance, which AMD lacks. It’s not anything against AMD, it’s just the way the game is coded and the way that AMD went about building their CPUs.
Yeesh, my laptop with a much lesser amd cpu and graphics card gets better fps on higher settings than the Op’s. And my desktop is years older with a lesser amd cpu and similar graphics card…..and it runs the game much better than the Op’s computer.
Either something is really messed up, or the OP was running a couple of his single player games at the same time?
It helps a little more if you give specifics…
and again. i play a D/D thief. The only Blind i have is blind on stealth and blinding powder. 2 blinds. doesnt help much when ranger can attack a kitten ton of times in a couple seconds.
Maybe you should try D/P then. I’ve been using it and it works more then fine against pewpew Rangers.
Phenom II x4 965 BE @3.4 Ghz
GTX 650 Ti
8GB ram (1600)35fps in crowded area with worse processor.
Try unlocking cores, set power management to full performance. Instal AMD thing for windows 7 (dunno its name).Well I would argue that on a core performance basis that they are nearly the same.
This exactly. An FX-8350 actually has worse single core performance then a Phenom II X6 1100T, even though it’s 2 generations newer. It’s sort of sad, really.
I want all of you to have higher standards…
I have rather high standard for my games and still play this just fine. I get 50-60 FPS on high/ultra with sweetfx, actually.
and I want the game to be optimized…
The game is only not heavily multithreaded. Otherwise it’s actually rather well optimized. The problem was you bought a CPU with garbage single core performance.
Now I will go enjoy a lagg-free enviornment with my other 150 steam games. goodbye
Goodbye. You won’t be missed.
It’s really not bad, honestly. The only thing I miss between new alts and my Ranger/Guard is the map completion. Exotic gear is easy to get and basically just as good as Ascended and map completion (if you just go for the WPs) is honestly pretty quick as well. It’s definitely worth making another character.
do you guys personally use this and if so, for how long?
I’ve used it for quite a while now. Maybe a year or so? Probably a bit longer then that even.
Yeah, sweetfx is fine.
I’ve crafted all of mine except my Thief, which hit 80 in an EotM karma train.
Also, and this is a kicker, the mobo should be fitted well for the CPU’s base heatsink at least. The mobo I’d gotten with my CPU has horrible placement of the RAM slots so that the non-stock HS prevents me from using 2 slots (which isn’t a worry for me personally, but still a point to bring up).
As long as you don’t have RAM with massive heatsinks you should be fine. Stuff like Corsair Vengeance may have issues but more plain sticks shouldn’t cause any problems.
What caught me was that the i7 860 is only compatible with the LGA1156 motherboard which is likely what he has now. The new i5 4440 that he bought is only compatible with the LGA1150 motherboards.
I’ve only done brief research years ago when I built my PC so maybe someone with more experience can confirm/refute my assumption.
You’re right. I had just assumed that the TC bought a motherboard to go with the i5.
It’s because there are two main ways to view your characters:
o As an extension of yourself in the game world
o As a companion to you
These different views result in different but valid, fun choices. For once everybody on the forum is right. Must be a first.
There’s at least one more though: As a tool to play the game with.
laughable 2h greatsword wielding for human females (pulling it after the character like a plow in the field).
That’s how you usually actually wield a 2h sword, though…
Not really. From this position you can only attack and this attack will be slow and predictable. You can’t defend yourself. As a bonus, if you hold it so low, you may trip and fall.
When running around/in motion, you hold it behind yourself like that.
laughable 2h greatsword wielding for human females (pulling it after the character like a plow in the field).
That’s how you usually actually wield a 2h sword, though…
Overclocking is a great way to get some more performance. Make sure that your temps stay at a reasonable level and you’ll be fine.
I’ve got 2 male characters (Asuran and Human) and 3 each of Human and Asuran females. When I make my Revenant it’s going to be another human female. I just like how females look more; so much of the armor and so many of the character looks are just super ugly on dudes. I don’t use skimpy armor either. I honestly can’t stand the stuff.
It’s quite accurate, but less so than most believe. For example, for 400-500 crafting the guide does not take into account the necessary craftig of bloodstone bricks, etc. which you could use to skillup since you’ll need them at 500 anyway (unless you plan to buy all the mats on the TP)..
The point of the site is to get to whatever level you’re after as quickly as possible, so of course they’re not going to count making loads of bloodstone bricks to level.
There are Vistas at the end of some JPs. So going for a map clear is problematic for some.
What, like 3 in the game? Maybe 4? It’s basically a non-issue. If you really hate JPs so much for whatever reason, just pay a Mesmer to portal you.
they’d see it has its own merits over a “crap I just overran my mousepad / the laser just hit a flaw and rocketed my cursor across the screen” traditional. But meh, to each their own
Those sounds like issues you’d have a written a crappy shredded mousepad or too low a sensitivity setting. Easily avoided by just not using crappy peripherals and making sure you have a mousepad large enough for your sensitivity. I use a $12 Sharkk gaming mouse and a $1 mousepad and I’ve never had an issue like that.
I personally stick to KB+M because it’s the most versatile and most confortable. I think I need to sell my Poseidon and get something with greens or swap in stiffer springs, though. They blues in it are far too light.
I personally generally recommend against Razer, though. Too many people I know having their stuff wear out after 6 months, and talk on the Internet backs it up. Logitech move and a quality (Das/Ducky/Code/CM or some other decent brand) mechanical keyboard are the way to go.

Even a professional surgeon isn’t necessarily better at performing surgery than your average invested intelligent patient.
You know if that were true, no game company would care about degrees in game design, or work experience in the game industry.
That’s a false equivalence. Surgeons, and other professionals, are licensed by the government and/or professional associations in order to be legally allowed to practice their trade. As far as I know, there is no such barrier of entry for game designers.
A more fitting comparison would be a game designer with a cook at a restaurant. Some go to culinary school. Some start washing dishes at an Applebees. Some game designers go to college. Some start by being QA testers.
Most people will care very much where their surgeon is certified. Most will not care where their chef was trained.
Actually a chef and/or cook has to be licensed by either the local city or state government in order to work with food. They need to be legally allowed to work with food. And know the various cooking temps and proper procedures for handling food.
Of course the requirements are different in each state, but generally at the very least the business owner and/or manager are required to have one.
This is news to me and I worked as the cook at al local restaurant/pizza place for over a year. My training was basically “this is where stuff is, then you make the food” and it was fine.
Go AMD in that price range. You should be able to get a 280x/290 for ~the same as a 960, maybe a little more, especially if you’re patient and watch for a deal on it. Even 290x is doable at <$300. /r/buildapcsales is always a good place to watch.
How do we know that condition duration isn’t going to be tied into a new trait?
We do know that some traits will be removed, others added, and some changed. So you still don’t understand the most basic point of this discussion, that stats are going to be removed from traits? Despite how it has been said over and over and over?
Well, I’ll repeat for you: stats are going to be removed from traits.
And I’ll repeat it for you: the missing stat points will be shuffled around to produce little or no net change.
Considering how that’s the exact reason why people are asking for a gear respec, what do you think you have been talking about in this topic?
Actually, you’re wrong. Did you even read the first post of this topic?
You can get banned for vulgarity? Well kitten
,it was challenging to survive if you got behind your train, and awsome when you managed to pull/knock that elitist roamer down a ledge to his death etc.
Feel the humiliation, elitist roamer, FEEL it ;D
It’s like you don’t even know what the word elitist means… Probably because you clearly don’t.
Honestly, I disagree. You’re claiming that dungeons aren’t played add much because they’re the ‘hardest’ content on the game, but you don’t really have anything to back it up. In any case, even if the dungeons are the hardest content, they are still (by and large) far from difficult. Especially after running through each dungeon once or twice, they’re honestly incredibly easy.
When HoT arrives and huge, sweeping changes are made to core aspects of the game that will make some of our alts unplayable, will we be able to get a gold refund for the gear that will now be useless?
The least ArenaNet should do is allow us to repick the stats of our gear. Just like people can do all the time with legendary items, and just like ArenaNet did when they removed magic find gear from the game.
They pretty much have no real reason to not do that.
If they don’t announce it, simply vote with your wallet. Don’t buy HoT or gems until ArenaNet implements it.
As far as I’m seeing, they have no reason to let people reroll their gear. Boycotting the game because they’re not going to reset your gear (which remains unchanged from when you got it) seems asinine.
You can get a respectable overclock just fine with a 212; that’s why it’s such a popular/highly recommended cooler. If you’re looking to max out your CPU, then yeah, get an H100i or whatever, but for someone looking to get a decent cooling boost to overclock to 4.4 GHz or whatever, a 212 will do the job just fine.
DH15, GNSS, or even a H110i would be a far better choice.
All of which are significantly more expensive options. The cheapest is over twice the cost of a 212 and the others are over 3x as much.
as for your old system, do what was suggested. Dust it out. You may still want to upgrade, but if you can get your old system stable…sell it to pad the costs of the new system. Maybe it can afford you some serious upgrade room (like going i7-5820K on x99 instead of 4690K on z97)
Parting it out could also be an option., if you can’t/don’t feel like fixing the thing.
That’s exactly what happened when a stick of RAM in my laptop died, so it’s pretty much the RAM for sure. Good luck figuring out which stick it is!
So the entire computer freezes and you can’t do anything, forcing a hard reset? That screams bad RAM to me. Try it one stick at a time and see how it goes. It seems odd that you replaced the ram and it still happens; did you just use RAM that you already had, or did you get new stuff?
Haswell beats SB by like 15-20%, clock for clock, iirc, so overclocking a 4690k to ~4.4-4.5 GHz should show a nice performance increase in zergs and the like.
If it’s your GPU that died and stuff was going nuts, a solid dusting out of the PC and reinstallation of Windows might work wonders on your old PC, though. 2600ks have held up really well, so a new GPU with that old build might be fine to keep tanking for another few years. My laptop started BSODing on boot and just not working in general and it just took a reformat+reinstall to fix.
