Super durable graphics card recommendations?

After long enough a lot of cards will have something die. Especially thermal paste; it’s just going to tend to dry out (although it’s generally an easy fix).

Your best bet is to get a card from a high-tier brand. I’d say to look at an EVGA, MSI, or Sapphire card. Probably a GTX 1050 or RX 460/470 depending on how much you want to spend

Anyone Using Freesync?

When freesync turns off you just lose the benefits of it, so your monitor will act like a normal monitor. I’m not sure if it defaults back to the highest refresh rate or the lowest, honestly.

For me personally freesync is super nice since I’m running a 144Hz monitor, so the framerate moving between 40-80 is substantially less stuttery then it would if the monitor just stays at 144Hz

480 8GB is a better buy then a 6GB 1060 now. They’re basically the same at 1080P but 480s are better at 1440P should you choose to go that route.

Especially if you have a freesync monitor, go for a 480 over a 1060.

Exactly, at 1440p 480 is better, but the 1060 is much more reliable

What does that even mean? They’re both perfectly reliable cards, it just so happens that a 480 is a smarter purchase at this point in time.

especially since no one games at 1440p yet

Loads of people game at 1440P these days, especially with how affordable 1440P 144Hz is getting

I’m not seeing GPU temp, but if it’s anywhere close to your CPU temp you’re fine.

The fan working hard is perfectly fine (and it’s the expected result, really); just make sure nothing goes above ~80C and you won’t have anything to worry about. If your temps do go higher, make sure that your computer has good airflow and it’s not super dusty

You’re probably not really having a problem per say. What was your old card for one? The xx60 cards are an above average gaming card, xx70 is much better, xx80 is really heavy. The thing is if you moved up from say an 860 to a 1060, there’s a good chance you won’t be seeing much of a difference, or if you went from say 970 to 1060 you’d probably see a loss.

Not so much the case in this generation. A 1060 6GB is 980 level.

TC, are you getting bad framerates everywhere or just in cities/demanding locations? If it’s in cities, getting bad framerates is to be expected in this game. 30 FPS in Lion’s Arch sounds about right for an i5-6500, especially with cranked settings

That laptop should be ok. What settings are you running on?

More ram/an SSD won’t help your performance, though. The SSD will give you faster load times but your framerate won’t see any changes

That being said, that desktop should be more then sufficient for your needs. You can do better (same/better specs for $100-150 less) building your own, though

Thank you both for the help so with an i5 and a 1050ti ill be golden.

Yes you will be golden however, if you call me on skype I can teach you what you need to know about shopping for parts and with that knowledge you can learn how to save a lot of money while still getting the performance you need. So I wouldn’t buy anything just yet. Call me first.

Why do you try to drag every single person who asks for build help onto skype? It’s unnecessary, and putting it on the open where people can critique your suggestions is a way better idea.

An i5+1050ti will probably do fine (although modern i3s are also fine if that’s what your budget can fit). You should wait for 1050/1050ti benchmarks to come out before picking a GPU though, since we have no idea if they’re good for the dollar or not

Question to Devs: Guild Wars 2 on consoles?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Unfortunately I don’t really have the time nor money to keep up with PC advancements. I can’t keep myself up to date.

You don’t really need to keep “up to date”, especially if you mostly play older stuff like GW2. That being said, an r7 265 should be more then enough for GW2@medium. What CPU do you have and what resolution to you play at?

Are there any plans to port GW2 to home consoles? Like the PS4 or Xbox One? I would gladly double dip if that was the case.

GW2 has enough issues running on high end PCs, so it won’t run even close to acceptably on modern consoles

Running GW2 in Ultra Settings with this setup

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Fermi.2409

Fermi.2409

Even at 1080P there’s no computer out there that can run this game at 60FPS on ultra everywhere. That will handle the game respectably, but in some of the new maps and in zerg situations you will probably have to knock down the settings to keep the framerate high, and that can only help so much

Personally I’m also at 1440P and see some dips, but it’s generally pretty manageable. Your monitor will have adaptive sync, which helps a ton when the framerate drops

People recommending i5 processors. Why?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fermi.2409

Fermi.2409

You really just don’t see any improvement from an i7 over an i5 in games. The money is better spent elsewhere or saved if gaming is your goal

Ironic, given your signature. That said, true, especially if this old clunker is not the only game you play.

Yeah, I suppose. I actually made money upgrading from my i5 to this i7 (had a 3570k before), though, so it’s kind of a special case.

That being said, if it’s only a few dollars between getting an i5 and an i7 it’s probably worth it to make the leap. It’s just not nearly worth $100

Playing with an i5 2500k 3.3GHZ, combined with a 1060 nvidia, I can tackle anything. I do drop model quality of other players down when i’m in zerk content like world bosses and wvw, but other than that it runs smoothly

Get a cooler and set that think to at least 4.5GHz, you’re missing out on loads of performance

Ppl also overlook their monitor. 1080p vs 2k/4k is BIG. 60 frames? A lot of ppl overkill for 1080p or under for 2k/4k. It all depends on YOUR needs/other.

If you mean 1440P by 2k, please just say 1440P. 2k doesn’t make sense as a name in general, but especially when applied to 1440P. 2k is technically 2048×1080, but in “common terms” (where 4k is 2160P) it’d just be 1080P

The fact that they’re selling a lower-performance card under the name of another is incredibly scummy, even if it’s still a reasonable bargain. I’m not sure if I’d want a 3GB card these days, though; it’s fine for now but I could very easily see it having issues at this time next year, especially at 1440P or other higher resolutions

There’s nothing wrong with competing, just give the card a lower end name if it’s a lower-end card.

Even the cheapest single fan model will achieve +2050MHz while staying at <75ºC and being silent.

iirc some of the bottom of the barrel ones from EVGA were kind of loud, so I’d avoid those. A dual fan model should be more then attainable at a reasonable price, especially with the Jet deals going on atm

Just make sure to get a 6GB 1060, the 3GB models are cut down GPUs and actually perform worse (an incredibly scummy move from nVidia imo)

OP mentioned he already have an i5. Its pretty pointless to buy a new one, you need a top end i7 to notice any real difference.

Even if he had a 2500k, which he doesn’t, he could definitely see some gains from jumping to an equivalently clocked 6600k.

OP, if you really want to upgrade grab a 6600k and the best GPU your budget leaves you. In the US you could get a 1070+6600k for $600 but I’m not sure what prices are like wherever you are

A modern i5 dumps on an 8350. A modern i3 is better for GW2. And an i7 doesn’t cost “thousands” lmao

Not to mention that you could have overclocked that 6300 over 4.2GHz easily…

You’re going to be getting low framerates in loads of situatuons anyways with that setup, so it’s hard to say. Also make sure your GPUs are actually clocking up abd not running at PCIE 1x

If you’re getting a new keyboard, get something mechanical and avoid “gaming” brands outside of CoolerMaster. Head over to /r/mechanicalkeyboards for more information

Even Skylake is dipping well into or below the 30s in heavy zerg situations. I wouldn’t call that more then enough performance

An SSD will help with loading times, which is nice, but it’s hardly necessary. I would suggest that you don’t get one unless you’re willing to bump up your budget. Everything listed will fit fine; all of the parts are standardized, so all you need to worry about is that he case will support a fullsized motherboard (it will) and that the CPU convert will have enough clearance (it will).

Make sure to watch a video telling you how to put the computer together before you do anything; newegg has an excellent one on YouTube. Besides that, if you’re careful it’s pretty easy as long as you take your time

Like I said before, you should really go to the subreddit BuildAPC and talk to them so you don’t screw up

The advice here will be of the same quality when it comes to build suggestions- some good, some bad. He’s fine not going there.

This is at the top of your budget but it’s a good all-around computer. In general you should be able to play any game on the market at good settings at 1080P.

If you want to keep it closer to $600, go for this:

Getting the i5 build is probably worth it in the long run, though.

There’s no reason to go for Haswell these days, that SSD is super overpriced, and that GPU is definitely not the best for the money. Personally I’d buy something like this:

Yeah, your performance is about right. Just OC the CPU and you’ll see some gains, 4.5GHz should be a breeze and will be a very nice boost

Nah that seems about right, especially if that 6700k is stock. You can squeeze some more frames by OCing your CPU, but in general GW2 is CPU bottlenecked hard, specifically being limited by single core performance.

In general though, a higher end GPU and an i5-6600k would have been a mcuh better bet for gaming, if there’s any possibility for swapping parts out.

you bought a OC edition to OC it more. typically you buy the OC and SC editions so you do not HAVE to OC the card.

Consider that.

I really don’t see how that’s relevant

That being said, I’ve seen some people claiming issues with overclocked stuff but from my own experience as long as your OC is stable GW2 won’t have any problems

500g is not a “relatively poor” player by any stretch of the definition. In fact, it’s probably above the average. But sadly I dont think it’s possible to summon JS from his cave of numbers as easily as it used to be, so I’m just making a fair guess.

It all depends on how you look at it. 500g isn’t particularly rich; if you play the game decently regularly and don’t blow it all on stuff you’ll get there in a fairly small amount of time, a couple of months at the outside.

Personally I’ve been sitting around 200-300g for a while and I definitely feel pretty poor. I get a decent skin every so often (keeping me in the 200-300 range) but it’s not nearly enough to start making ascended gear for multiple alts, make much progress on a legendary, or even craft certain exotic gear+get runes/sigils

Also, liquid gold isn’t necessarily the best measure of wealth. Again, it’s all about what you’re looking for
