I placed this same thread in the mesmer and WvW section in hopes of trying to figure out which to play next…
I’m just wondering what you all suggest in leveling a “clothie.” I played a GS Mesmer back in the day and really liked the class even though I felt like a huge target to d/d Thieves. I also have a d/d ele right now at level 80 but I’m sick of trying to make him effective. I have seen a few vids of the terrormancer in eotm just trolling people (which looks fun). Of the two though, I’m not sure which would be better for solo roaming.
I’m very familiar with the mesmer class but don’t know a great deal about the necro. From what I hear, they can play several viable builds (condi, power, CC) and are easy/quick to level. I also hear they do well in PvE and sPvP and are overall, pretty effective.
My main goal in playing a clothie is just to roam around and create havoc for the enemy. I’ll be honest by saying the idea of being a complete troll is appealing.
What do you all suggest?

Thanks folks! I’m going to go try the engi then.
Thanks for the response folks! I’ll go ahead and try and Engi as they have always looked pretty fun and we all know how much of a troll then can be in PvP. Oh, and Argon, your description of a Necro is just too funny!
So, I have been playing GW2 for over a year now and unlike every other MMO I’ve played, for some reason I can’t seem to find the “right” class for me. I don’t like having alts so I tend to find a class and just play that 1 class for the rest of the time I’m there. That has been my goal but sadly, I’m still pretty much at a loss. If possible, can you all please help me pick one based upon what I’m wanting out of the game? Oh, and the “pick the class that’s fun” doesn’t help me because I think they are ALL fun. /sigh. I also mainly focus on WvW and PvP but will sometimes run a dungeon when crazy bored. I don’t mind changing builds/gear but would like to keep the same class.
What I’m Looking For:
1. Mobility – I hate playing classes that by default are slow to move around the battlefield. I shouldn’t need traveler’s runes just to keep up with everyone else.
2. Escape Potential – If I get into an “OH CRAP” situation, I’d like to be able to escape. I tend to have a “hit and run” playstyle.
3. Balanced – I really want something that can perform well in all areas of the game. I don’t expect to top any charts but it would be nice to take a camp in WvW yet still be able to go 1v1 against some burst class.
4. Exciting – Played a LB condi build – boring as hell! The D/D is like a MMO on speed…
My Experience So Far:
I have an 80 Thief, Guardian, Warrior, D/D Ele, and a Ranger. Currently, I play the thief most of the time because she just feels like she can do most of what I want better than the rest. Here is my thoughts on each (I am probably wrong…)
1. Thief – Great roamer, decent in PvP and can do PvE w/o too much trouble. I use p/d perplexity in WvW, burst condi in PvP, and P/P zerker in PvE. It’s pretty boring in zergs though as I don’t feel like I can support the team well.
2. Guardian – Fun to tank with but I feel like I get kited all the time. I also don’t feel like my guard can escape a bad situation very well. She’s amazing in PvE though.
3. Warrior – Well balanced in all areas but are completely predictable and too common. I find myself yawning when I play my warrior.
4. D/D Ele – REALLY exciting on all those skills but is feels like I have to go through all these rotations and might-building just to do the damage my other classes can do with the push of 2 buttons. I also don’t much care for any other weapon sets.
5. Ranger – I really love my ranger in almost every aspect but her survival is so limited on my LB variant that if I make 1 or 2 mistakes, it’s over. She also can’t do much against a heavy condi class. PvE is fun but nobody wants a ranger for dungeons. /cry
So, with this wall of text, what do you all think?

So, with this wall of text, what do you all think?
This is exactly the same problem I have when I try to play my D/D Ele. This ele was one of my first characters and I used him for sPvP, WvW, and PvE alike. He was a ton of fun!
Now, I can’t seem to get him to do much of anything other than die. I’ve seen some D/D ele’s that appear almost immortal but it just takes me so much to get so little in response. I have to go through this rotation/setup just to do the same basic level of damage that another class does.
I picked the D/D ele at first because it was fun to play and something that very few folks ever selected. I keep hearing that they are the most wanted in any sPvP team but I just don’t see why.
When I change over to my burst condi thief, they die in seconds.
Here is my thief, Alyia in her DPS gear. She pretty much avoids all the “fluff” outfits and likes to go with the simple white t-shirt and jeans.
The last one is in another variant of her normal set.
I honestly don’t struggle much with solo roaming. I’d say I have a very good win ratio in 1vs1 fights and I only ever really feel like I’m at a disadvantage if there are multiple opponents.
I honestly love my guardian but I get so frustrated if I run into a class that can easily kite me. I fought a thief and a ranger last night that would just keep me slightly out of range while they slowly cut me down. Sure I would get up on them from time to time but never long enough to do much. Those SB rangers are even worse!
Again, the guardian is a ton of fun and I was really trying to learn it well enough to make it my main character but after getting killed 3 times due to folks kiting me, now I’m not so sure anymore. After the 3rd death I changed over to my p/d thief and just murdered folks. /sigh
@ X,
I ran into a guy running this build a few hours ago on my p/d condi thief and to be honest, I didn’t take is all that seriously at first. He was running around in some crazy looking outfit which clearly was a nice distraction.
Well, I did take him seriously when he killed me.
Oh, I should have explained that off-hand swap set instead of the SB. The d/p offhand is what I use when I run into that “OH CRAP” moment and just need to bug out. I like the SB but often find that d/p is better for escaping.
Yes, I’m one of those thieves that if I see I will not likely survive, I stealth and run away. Of course, I do come back to be annoying…
@ Koachanism,
Thanks for responding and letting me know your thoughts! I’ve played around with so many builds lately that I sometimes confuse myself.
Yeah… I’m back again with my theorycrafting nonsense. Sorry!
I’m back to playing around with my thief again as it’s the one class that I tend to always do well with regardless of the situation. After a few hours in WvW last night on a celestial/traveler build, I started messing around with going back to a confusion build kitten many people I ran into simply don’t know how to cleanse it. The story was different with very skilled players but it was still effective none the less.
Anyways, the build linked below uses my current gear items except for the perplexity runes (which cost a fortune). I know it’s a bit strange but I’m just sold on celestial gear. I had also thought about switching out sig of shadows for scorp wire in order to stack more confusion.
After looking at the stats, does this look fairly balanced and effective? My goal was to create a build that stacks massive amounts of conditions (burst condi) but still have enough based damage/crit to add a small bit of pressure. What would you all change around?
Again, this is my current gear setup and I’ve got about 87 laurels to change out the accessories as needed.
Thanks for the help!

@OP,
I just ran your build in sPvP and while I know it’s not the same as WvW, it’s pretty freaking amazing. Course, it could be that the other team really sucked but I ended up taking 1st place in points and only died once. That fire-field really makes for some fun!
Thanks for posting this! I have been thinking about a celestial build for quite some time but to be honest, I really got bored with my warrior as I just felt that my guardian could do things better in most cases. Who knows if that’s true or not but after awhile, I lost my love for the warrior class.
I would like to try this out some as I already have the armor ready to be crafted but is it effective if I don’t have celestial weapons? Would you suggest knights as a replacement?
I actually fought against someone using this build last night on my burst-condi p/d thief. He appeared to be doing very well at holding points and was doing some serious damage against our “power” based team members. What I noticed though is after my opening combo which stacks confusion, bleeds, poison, etc, he dropped fairly quickly.
It was funny to see what he could do against a LB ranger though.
Why invest in healing when you can just kill people – Thief isn’t a healer
The healing idea is for the sustain. When I’m roaming around, I almost NEVER get into a 1v1 where some other fool doesn’t show up and cause trouble. Even in duels I run into this problem. As such, I’m often forced to stealth and then reset the fight again.
My hope was with a build like this that I would be able to apply lots of pressure while constantly regenerating my own health.
I currently play something similar using celestial/traveler’s runes with the skills you mentioned. It’s decent enough and has great survivability but just doesn’t put enough pressure on folks.
I was roaming today on my glass cannon LB ranger and ran into two thieves who both ran D/P burst builds. I got the first down to about 20% before he tucked tail and ran away while the 2nd engaged me. Due to being about 40% and most of my CD’s down, I didn’t stand much of a chance against the other thief.
The point I’m making is that the thief, better than any other class, can always escape if they want to and reset the fight. While some builds will allow you to make a few mistakes and survive, the build alone will never remove the gap that comes with skill.
I have been completely destroyed by just about every class and every “common” build out there and in return, have killed them as well. Most of the time it comes down to timing and who makes the mistake.
What I suggest is to find a play-style, not a class/build that you like FIRST and then find the class/build that most resembles how you enjoy the game. GW2, unlike any other MMO I’ve played, can pretty much fit any interest with their unlimited build combos.
Hello again!
As someone who hates playing a “meta” build, I saw a video today where a p/d thief was using heavy conditions and healing to simply outlast most of his targets and it got me thinking… (kinda scarey actually)
Anyways, I went back and played around with the build calculator and came up with the build linked below. The idea is to create a roaming build that has several interrupts and can pile on the conditions while at the same time, constantly self-healing. I’m not so sure how this will play out but it looks interesting.
Can you all please look at this and let me know if you think it would be viable for WvW roaming?
I ran into a bunker guard last night who kept a point against 3 from my team for about 3-4 minutes before they finally took her down. A few random DPS would show up here an there to help but they got squashed rather quickly. While she didn’t do much damage, she was able to draw things out long enough that if she actually had a decent team, the outcome would have been much different.
I liked the video! It’s nice to see a different style of conditions and how you combine raw damage with them. By chance, can you post your build?
LOL! That was perfect!
@Numrud,
Below is a quote from another thread that I made. This is a really fun build based upon the traditional “Commander” build yet it will produce massive amounts of DPS.
@ OP,
I use a similar Medi build for my guardian and have had a great deal of success with it. Some may question the traveler’s runes but for roaming, it’s what I tend to use as well.
If you would consider something different than the Medi that is so popular right now, I highly recommend you take a look at the video below. This build plays like a Medi but has a crap-ton of regen and sustain while dealing out crazy damage. Even with a full exotic set, you can do some nasty damage while roaming. I’ve been testing this the last few days and while it does lack in mobility (I use the staff to move around), it’s really fun to troll folks with.
To be honest, I couldn’t live w/o the greatsword. Even in 1v1 duels, the damage it can produce is just amazing. That, and I’ve always thought the hammer was too slow and predictable.
If anything, the gap closer of the GS makes it worth it to me.
….the only problem is….it doesnt look like a meta build (Afraid? yah but i prefer to work around what works the most for guardians there is a reason why its called meta i guess) and also its acended Build =/ im not experienced enough with guardians builds to try out with my FIRST Acended items a new and kind of nice build out of the meta =/? Anyone else got experience with this build? made it work somehow close with exotics items? Any recommends about that build?
Oh, it’s far from the meta and I would NOT recommend you go with this for your ascended set FIRST. I should explain that a bit -
What I always do in a new build is test a variant of it in sPvP so I can get more familiar with the play style and how it “feels.” I’d suggest you try all of the ones you like in PvP a bit and see how you like them and if they fit for how you like to play the class. Obviously there will be some differences between PvP and WvW but you can get a pretty good idea how they work. For the Legendary Build, I’d go with the Soldier runes because they give you the shout bonus as well.
Here is a link to the PvP version i’d suggest you try if you’re interested in this: Legendary PvP Build
Oh, and about the meta, I’m a person that will shy away from the concept simply because I don’t like to do what everyone else is doing. For one, it’s too predictable to those you face and two, I just like being more unique.
Hope this helps!
because you fail to identify the tools we bring to the table
I bring beer and sometimes cheesecake.
Oh, that was random, sorry!
I um, bring my epic OP trolling build to the table.
Because it’s easy and takes no skill. Not to mention it peels hard vs. burst classes too such as Mesmer + Thief.
And this information was brought to you by a Warrior who dies to Rapid Fire, lol
…who was trained by a LB ranger who also died while the guard just stood there with retaliation on. Someone really needs to talk to these folks about how bad suicide is and that really, there are easier ways.
@ OP,
I use a similar Medi build for my guardian and have had a great deal of success with it. Some may question the traveler’s runes but for roaming, it’s what I tend to use as well.
One thing that does catch my attention is your low crit% at only 28%. What I’ve always tried to do is have a minimum armor of 2800, and my crit near 40%. Personally, I would change a few items over to knights gear (P,T,P) and use a maintenance oil for the extra crit buff.
If you would consider something different than the Medi that is so popular right now, I highly recommend you take a look at the video below. As someone who has now played every class except a Necro, I am probably going to keep my Guard as my main despite some of the concerns mentioned here. My reasons are simple:
1. I love to front-line tank in WvW and PvE. The Guard simply excels in these areas.
2. In sPvP, the GS Guard is a crap ton of fun!
3. WvW roaming – Legendary Guardian
4. I hate thieves (and used to play one as a main).
5. With that blue-flaming GS, my Guard looks amazing!
Not to completely answer my own question but I think I should probably just go with my Guardian as she can pretty much do everything I just listed as a “must.” If I want to change things around a bit, she can also easily front-line tank in WvW and all the time having decent mobility.
I’ve only been playing a Guardian for about a week now and so I’ve got a ton to learn still.
@ OP:
I have a similar problem and have asked the same question. I like the ele because of all the skills and it just “feels” exciting to switch between them. The play style is so quick that it never gets boring to me. The problem I have is that the ele just feels limited and is forced to go through all those combo’s to simply put out close the damage of my medi-guard.
While my ele used to be the build/class I loved when I first game to GW2, these days I tend to drop on my guard when I really need to get the job done.
On a side note, play armor just looks amazing too.
In general what type of build do you like to play. A tank that can support allies with damage and boons/heals or a pure dps. Answer that question and you will have narrowed it down to half the builds out there (I say builds and not classes because dps builds are better on different classes like I probably wouldnt solo roam as a s/f dps ele or I wouldnt try to be a tank on a thief).
Honestly, I love playing a “tanky” class and even spent a good bit of time as a “main” tank back in the days. I had the most fun though as a DPS tank where I might not have the DPS of a glass cannon but I could survive or outlast most other DPS builds. The one problem I have with a “tanky” class here is that so often they have crap for mobility.
So, if there was a “perfect” build for me it would be something tankish (if that’s a word), with enough DPS to put pressure on folks while still having decent mobility.
Any suggestions?
Oh, and thanks for the help!
(edited by FinalPatriot.8034)
Hey finalpatriot, the concerns you are having is typical of most people frustrated with the class. that condi build you used to run in wvw (i know because I probably gave you the build) is pretty outdated and I am not sure it would work in the current roaming meta.
Were you the guy that was showing the perplexity build and later changed Orr runes? I used to love this build as it just made other heavy condi classes look stupid. I did have a duel with “Super Wilson” one day on that build and he really made me look foolish.
The important thing in a pvp setting is not to look at an ele from a 1v1 percpective.
I guess that’s my problem. I try to compare WvW, sPvP, and PvE as all the same thing and have tried to not only use the same build for each, but play the same way. Guess I’m simple-minded? Being able to simply hold a point in sPvP until my team can back me up is a huge advantage that I didn’t think about.
The fact you can’t survive 2v1 for a long time is a good thing.
I always figured it was due to my lack of skill because I’ve seen so many videos (even recently) where other players will take on 2-3 people and win. Granted they have full celestial gear (which I don’t) but it just made me wonder. It’s pretty easy for me to take on 2-3 folks on my thief but most of the time I’m just trolling them while trying to put pressure on the squishy one.
LB rangers are really annoying to deal with when not 1v1 and its impossible to run from a fight with them.
That’s actually while I went and created one. I got so sick of LB rangers killing me before I could even close distance with them! The problem with the LB ranger is though that they have sooo many areas where they can be defeated if folks know how to do it.
Long story short, ele isnt optimal for roaming now.
That’s actually pretty sad. While I spend most of my time in sPvP now, I do miss roaming around WvW and looking for other roamers.
My advice if you haven’t found enjoyment in two years is give up or take a break from the game.
I actually did quit the game for ArcheAge, played DA:I, and eventually came back. GW2 is still the best MMO I’ve ever played but the problem I have, as I’ve had since I started, is trying to find the “prefect” class/build for me. In SWTOR, I played an assassin with a tank build and loved it – in WoW, I played a hybrid demon warlock, and loved it – in GW2, I’m totally lost. /cry!
Howdy folks,
I have been playing a D/D Ele for about two years now and while it was my favorite class in the game, I’m quickly growing frustrated with it and was hoping you all might be able to help me. I should be honest and say that I deleted my Ele once already only to later come back and level her again. She’s also no collecting dust… again. /sigh
My Ele is currently running the “meta” with a celestial set of gear though I have also used a condi based with perplexity at one point. While I “think” I understand the class well, here are the main problems I’m having:
#WvW: Perhaps it’s just how WvW is these days but this was my main roaming character and even used her in group zergs. These days, if I get more than one person on me, I don’t feel like I have much of a chance to survive. I also feel like that most of the time if things really turn south, she has no real way to escape if the FGS is on CD.
#sPvP: I’ll drop this into my experience in sPvP but it also fits in WvW to some extent. My Ele often feels like she’s doing 2-3 times the work for the same level of damage as does any other class I have without much survivability. I had a 1v1 fight against a necro yesterday and he just made me look stupid once he changed forms.
Perhaps I’ve forgotten all the tricks of the class and have just become so disappointed with it that I can’t see my own mistakes. I would really like to be more successful with my Ele but right now, she just doesn’t come close to my Thief, Power Ranger, Medi Guard, etc.
Do you all have some advice or a good video I can watch and hopefully learn from?
Oh, and I almost forgot – that perplexity/condi build I was using was mainly because I was so sick of D/P thieves taking me down in 2-3 hits. The condi build with the human elite would just eat them alive! Outside of roaming though, I didn’t see much benefit to it.
Thanks again!
I’m a lady thief
Futashia, what pants are you using for your thief? Those look so familiar but I can’t place them.
As boring as it is sometimes, I have always loved the “look” of a P/P thief and have used it for ages in PvE. It’s just so easy to burst out huge amounts of damage. It’s sad though that it’s not a all viable in WvW or sPvP even with using the blinding tricks.
Condi’s and full turrets do not go together. Even dual pistols do not apply enough conditions to make a dent in your enemies defenses.
Swap the rifle turret for grenades for better results.
Also trait for more Condi’s, and less traits for turrets.
Also changed your Rune. Rune of Balthazar is ridiculously good on condi engi’s/Something like this :
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQJAqelUUpyq1WxmKseRCbBNqxEqdIyNWlPfgAEBA-TJRFABds/AAnAgoKDk8DAAA
This is an interesting build. I saw you have several traits for kits and explosions but I didn’t see you using the grenade kit. Would you use this instead of rifle turret?
Just delete the class all together. In fact, I’m going to delete my engi right now due to all your obvious agony.
Ok, I went back and took out rifle turret for flame and replaced the pistol with the rifle and you all were correct, it’s much better now!
One problem I have is with heavy conditions builds though. Do you all have any suggestions on what I can do to remove the condi?
The concept at least looks fun but I’m not sure how viable this is. I’ve tried testing it in sPvP (w/o perplexity runes of course) and it was pretty fun. I was able to get 13 stacks of confusion on targets pretty easily. At one point, I got around 13-15 stacks on a ranger with half health and just watched as he killed himself.
Nobody has any thoughts on this build?
Hello again folks!
Many moons ago I played this hybrid build that was suggested by a friend of mine and at the time, it was a good bit of fun for dueling and solo roaming. I later changed over to a LB/shout build and then left the game due to RL requirements. As I’m not one to follow the “meta,” I wanted to toy around with something similar to what I used to use.
The main points with this build are:
- Stack confusion with the stuns of the mace, shield, bulls charge.
- Every weapon swap has at least one stun and a block.
- Stack conditions + blinds (mischief sigil).
- Cure conditions and heal with shouts.
- Create a balance between raw damage, crit chance, and condition damage.
- Be accused of being a troll!
If possible, can you all review over this build and give me your thoughts?
My engi is close to 80 now and so I’ve been testing several different builds in sPvP with all of them being some variant of the turret/bunker concept. I originally went with the rifle as it’s the meta right now but I’m not convinced it’s the best way to go. My goal is strickly to survive and put enough pressure on folks that I can hold the point alone against 2+ long enough for my team to send support.
With that as my goal, can you please look over this build and give me your thoughts? I went with the condi P/S build as it just feels to be better suited with all the conditions combined with the block and interrupts. I also am not a fan of the shield effect on the turrets so I changed out that trait.
I’ve not a clue if this would even work in WvW because clearly, folks can just run away.
Anyways, here is the build: (Oh, and yeah, it’s using traveler’s runes)
Howdy folks!
After playing a bunker engi in sPvP for the last few days, I’ve decided to actually level one up to 80. I was wondering though if you all could suggest a leveling build I can use with the flamethrower? I’m not a huge fan of the grenades/bomb kits.
Thanks!
As someone who’s never really played an Engi before but has fought someone with this build, it’s freaking amazing. My melee characters just melt to this. On the other hand, my LB ranger and D/D ele take it down rather quickly. Rock, scissors, paper…
I run a LB/GS glass cannon build with my ranger in both sPvP and WvW and to be honest, it’s a freaking ton of fun. Everyone knows how a LB ranger fights so they will predictably take actions to defend against your burst. The trick is to fake them into burning their CD’s and then you kill them.
It’s great in sPvP where you are needed to provide some long-range pressure on a bunker class.
Howdy folk!
I have been playing a warrior in WvW/sPvP for as long as I can remember but I’m actually pretty darn bored with the class and wanted to try a “bursty” guardian using the GS + something… I’ll build this Guard for WvW but will try a similar concept in sPvP.
Can you all give me a link to a nice burst build?
Thanks!
And here it is, my current noobish/unexperienced attempt to achieve what you stated:

(Note: Its all ascended because I happen to have all the jewellery and weapons lying around and crafting a set of armor is no big deal for me atm)
Wow… You’ve given me quite a bit to think about with your response! Thanks for posting all this here. I’ll actually have some time later today to review over everything and then get back to you.
As for those sigils, I’ve been using them in tPvP and they do help a good bit on the LB. I think the normal return was around 268 health per tick. It’s not huge but adds up quickly.
This is my little ranger, Rayne. I’m still not really sure on a setup for her but this is the current “cyborg” look that I was going with. What do you all think?
I really dig your look! Have you considered trying to match the color of the eyepiece and the orb on her belt? Just an idea.
I got a pretty good shot of my Ranger a few moments ago:
That’s a great idea! Kinda sad that I never thought of that.
That’s a great shot of your ranger too! I’ve never had much luck with the “action” shots.
