My GPU-z states “PCI-E 2.0 × 16 @ 16 2.0” in the bus interface box. It’s also got a question mark beside it. Would you know what that means?

Edit: That was taken in-game a few weeks back.

There may a positive in that FPS could be increased in a future build? Perhaps some code optimisation?

I’d just like to chime in here. None of the above have helped me.

I have run all sorts of checks recommended to me by Anet and, according to them, I should not be experiencing the bad FPS I am experiencing. Having said that, there are a number of things that I can still try:

-repair GW2
Update drivers (although I already have the latest official ones)
Reinstall Windows.

I haven’t done any of these as, and I have posted this elsewhere, I haven’t had the time. The first option, I would hazard a guess, might be the easiest thing to try. I couldn’t tell you the outcome so it would be up to you to decide if that’s a viable option.

Disabling one GPU

Flatley.1620

Hi,

I am trying to find a way of disabling one GPU on my Radeon 5970 (an older card) as I’ve been reading the interwebs and it appears it may help with my FPS. This – apparently – disables Crossfire on a single PCB.

Try as I might, I cannot see a way of doing this although it’s apparently doable by disabling Catalyst A.I. And then it gets confusing as I can’t find any option to change any settings in my CCC. I’m running Catalyst version 13.4 which is the latest I think.

Anyone with the power of Google-foo (foo because I kittened with the correct term) up to black belt standard – help would be most appreciated as I just can’t find the definitive answer…

Have you submitted a ticket to Anet yet? You’ll need to look at some of the stuff yourself – overheating, dust etc. – but Anet will give you a set of programs to run to determine what is going on with your PC.

I sympathise: a patch earlier this month had exactly the same effect on my rig and I’m now just hoping a new build reverses said FPS drop.

You’ll need to supply some more details before anyone here can help, really Systems specs and the crash report if you have one. Then you’ll need to run the stuff Anet will ask you to so they can get a picture of your PC and what’s going on. The first stop would be a Game Advisor report I think.

You’ll also get a challenge from the folks here around overheating so be sure to clean out dust from your PC’s gizzards and be ready to run some temperature checking software.

Additionally, you may want to try official drivers and/or beta drivers.

This isn’t in reply to anyone in particular, just some stuff you’ll need to be doing.

Loud fan. Need help.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Flatley.1620

Flatley.1620

Your question has a lot of variables. It may be that the fan makes this racket normally. If that’s the case, you could look at buying some different fans for it.

You could also look at the cooling and exchange it for a water cooled GPU.

Additionally, you could employ extra case fans to lessen the screech.

Also. larger fans (perhaps 120mm?) make less noise than their smaller cousins.

How big is your case?
Do you have nice cable management?
Can you run some temperature tests to show if your GPU is efficiently cooled?
Look up some reviews for quiet fans.

Just some points I can think of off the top of my head.

Cleaning dust will not give you a 50fps boost

Trust me, I’ve jumped those hoops. I’ve run a lot of tests – Unigine, Speccy, CPU-z, GPU temp, CPU temp – to name but a few. I’ve had my PC cleaned- of dust, malware, everything.

There was a patch on 02/07/13 that throttled my FPS something chronic. That is the culprit. If it isn’t, I’ll happily eat my CPU fan.

Yes, 1.7ghz is far below spec for this game. To put this into some kind of perspective, I have an i7 980x running at 4ghz and I get graphics lag something awful. I’m also running an ATI Radeon 5970. I’ve done every test I’ve been told and still, since 2/7/13, my FPS is extremely – and I do mean extremely – bad. This, despite my rig being above minimum requirements.

I would suggest submitting a ticket to Anet but you need to look at your hardware first – I doubt it comes up to spec.

An observation. What do you make of this? Firstly, I ramped every graphical option up to maximum and took a screen shot of the resultant FPS – in case the image is too small, it reads 25FPS. This was taken in a WvWvW area near the Asura gates and turned away from any structure:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/flatleythebard/images/flatley%20in%20best%20poss%20appearence%20turned%20away%20from%20buildings.jpg

Next, I left the graphics settings as is and turned back towards the gates and towards some structures. In case you can’t read it, the FPS is 9.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/flatleythebard/images/flatley%20in%20best%20poss%20appearence%20turned%20towards%20buildings.jpg

To me, it looks like some increase in bandwidth to display structures has increased. Would that be a fair point?

Nope, I’m not saying that because that is new information you have brought to the thread. I am not familiar with the performance you were getting before, I was simply answering the question you posed. 4Ghz on an antiquated architecture like our own is not going to cut it for large WvW battles and large dynamic events. Our FPS will suffer more than those with an updated architecture, like ivy bridge and haswell.

However, your FPS that you stated is quite low for what your hardware spec is. Perhaps checking your thermals would be a good place to start.

I did a thermal check a few days back in response to Anet helping me out. At that time, my GPU was around mid-60’s both idle and in-game (odd, but there you are). So, I had my rig cleaned out with compressed air, and it’s now dust free and looks like it’s just been built.

My GPU thermals are now down to the low 50’s but I still have nasty FPS in build up areas like LA.

My CPU hasn’t had any heat issues. I’ve run Speccy, GPU temp, CPU-z, and an Unigine test which all tell me my rig is fine.

These FPS issues only happened since the 2nd July patch so my suspicion is that something in there is throttling my performance somehow but it’s not a common occurrence across the player base.

I have to admit to being a little bit stumped and that’s why I was looking into new GPU as an option.

Not sure if this has been suggested – did a search, but couldn’t see anything.

I have to change my settings often due to FPS lag around built up areas i.e. to best performance. When I go to rural areas, I have to redo the settings I’d originally had i.e. let the game select the best graphics options, then customise those settings to get my FPS back up.

What I would like is the ability to save my settings profile so it’s all just a click away.

Either of those cards will work, neither would I recommend for Guild Wars 2 because they are overkill. If you plan on playing other games they will be good, but Guild Wars 2 is more CPU dependent in some areas than GPU dependent. You would see a huge FPS increase in areas of the game that are not large WvW battles or large dynamic events because those areas of the game are more CPU dependent than GPU dependent.

Well, the thing is, my CPU is at 4ghz and before the 2nd July update everything ran fine. I’ve now had to change some of the settings but in LA, I can only move around @ a max of 7-12 fps with “best performance” selected.

Are you saying that 4ghz doesn’t cut it any more?

I have this mobo:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6X58DE/

I’m currently running a Radeon 5970 GPU. Can the above take a 7990 or a Titan and, if so, could I see a significant FPS increase?

Other specs:
i7 980x @ 4ghz (cooled on air)
6 MB DDR3 @800mhz RAM (9-9-9-24)
C: drive 10K Velociraptor
D: 60gb SSD (Crucial C300 and this is where GW2 resides)
Corsair 1K PSU
Corsair Obsidian 700D case
Creative Titanium Fatal1ty Champion
Win7 64bit Pro SP1 OEM
Couple of optical drives
Couple of extra Apache 120mm fans

Have you tried setting reflections to off and vsync on? I’ve had similar issues and these helped me out.

Hi,

I’d just like to post back on this subject with the latest I have on the FPS drop.

Firstly, I’ve just had my PC professionally cleaned to rule out dust overheating my rig.

Secondly, and with the excellent help of the Anet guys, I changed my in-game graphics settings thus:

Refresh rate = 60hz
Frame limiter = 60
Reflections = none
Render sampling = native
Enable v-synch

I also set shaders to medium which gave me an extra 3-4 frames to play with.

So, what do I get now? In rural areas I can get a 40-50% increase in frame rates by letting GW2 auto-detect then change the above to as shown. LA is still a lag-fest, even with the settings preset at “best performance” – and by that, I mean 9-12 FPS. If I leave the settings at best performance, I can expect a near maximum (due to the frame rate limiter above set at max) – 55-60 FPS in rural and “quiet” areas.

I also had some advice on my catalyst driver suite settings but nothing really needed doing there.

Going forward:

I still need to run GPU-z to completely rule out overheating.
I’m going to upgrade my GPU.

Give that last point, I’d really appreciate advice on the one to get given my mobo specs above. I’m thinking a 7990 but I have no objections to the highest spec nVidea card (observing any compatibility issues) I can get or possibly a Titan.

What do you think?

PS.

My case is a Corsair Obsidian 800D which has acres of real estate to hold quite a lot of stuff – I think it’s big enough for any GPU.

Well, tomorrow I have a tech guy coming around to “fix” my PC. By that I mean temp diagnostics, cleaning etc. I would do that myself but um… my rig is too heavy to shift. After that, I’m going to run CPU-Z and see what the outcome is.

I have been in contact with NCSoft and Anet and they have said that, although my temperatures are still OK, the GPU ones are causing a concern as they are above what they should be given that I’m cooling on air with no GPU o/c.

Now… a question to you gurus, if I may. My mobo is an Asus P6X58D-E ( http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6X58DE/ )

My GPU is an ATi Radeon 5970.

Yes, I know both of those are a couple/few of generations out-of-date. I also have an i7 980x o/c’d from 3.33 to 4ghz.

The questions therefore becomes: could I fit an Radeon 7970 to that board and, if I did, could I expect a significant increase in FPS?

Many thanks.

My CPU cooler is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zalman-CNPS9500A-LED-Heatsink-Fan/dp/B001FW3GS0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373320299&sr=8-1&keywords=zalman+cnps9500a

Are we talking lag from a high ping or from a complete decline in FPS? Or both?

Mikikira, I’m pretty sure temperature is not part of the equation here. I have this when starting GW2 almost from cold and the temp tests I did in the thread I linked above show no abnormalities.

Before the last build, I was playing with most settings on high or max and everything was super smooth.

Now, I can set the preset option to “best performance” and the graphic lags are still there although not so pronounced.

I’ll admit to not having the technical nous to completely rule out overheating but it seems really suspicious that the last build introduced this issue.

Have you been experiencing this very recently? The build on 2nd July has had more or less the same effect on my rig and I’m talking to NCSoft/Anet about it with an open ticket.

Perhaps you could try that also.

TBH, I’m pretty sure it’s not overheating. I have the same issues and ran temp checks. They’re in this thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Graphics-lag-since-last-build

I’ve also ran an MSCONFIG with no apps running in the background (except the obvious MS ones) and I’ve also ran an Unigine test where I achieved 50fps and a max of 108fps – both of these tests at the behest of Anet with whom I have a ticket open.

This has only happened since the 2nd July build.

Yes, I have the FPS issue too – since the last patch/build. Nothing had changed on my end but I’m seeing 7fps in LA and other built up areas as well as when there are a few players/NPC’s around.

I have a support ticket open regarding this and the ANet folks(and I must say, kudos to them for the quick responses) have had me try a few things. Nothing has solved the issue yet but we’re still looking at it

I’m hoping a new build comes out soon that reverses whatever happened last time
