Why “bring back” the trinity? Why not try to stay original and don’t?
I know this has been done before but I thought I’d try it out for myself.
I created a new character and tried to view the game from a new players’ eyes. The only thing I have “helped” myself with is inventory bags as inventory juggling is such a pain – in all games.
So, no level boosts, no buying of cool gear (I’m tallying what I’m getting from playing against my bank balance), gear gained is from drops only as is money and am doing map completion(s) without referring to my alts.
It’s such fun! OK, it’s taken me two hours to get to level 13 but it’s such a great game! I was becoming slightly jaded but doing this is so, well, cool. Obviously, some stuff comes from experience but it’s difficult to ignore what one remembers
If anyone asks, I’d highly recommend such an endeavour even if it’s just a “journey down memory lane”. I may well post back on findings as I progress. It’s not all about “the end game” after all
Although my main is Sylvari, I “feel” most at home in DR. And that appears to be the case for all my characters, despite their race. No matter what hovel, abandoned ruin, wood, village, town, city it always comes back to DR for me.
What about you?
I’m 50/50 on the underwater stuff. I’m not a great fan as combat feels sluggish (as it naturally would be) but I can see why folk would enjoy it. However, I think what would make it more interesting – at least for me – is to make a map entirely underwater but have it an explorers paradise…
… more vistas, chests in places that reward those who think “I wonder what’s over there?”, NPC dialogues to make one laugh, graphics that make you go “wow”, new creatures, new heart quests (probably not combat related) etc.

I hate JP’s with a vengeance. The reason for that is that I’m hopeless at them. To that end, I never bother.
With one caveat… I love “The Wall”. Yes, technically it’s a vista but it feels really “jumpy”
Thanks all – appreciate the replies!
Title says it all really. On top of the 500 each I have already, I have, being stored in in bank slots:
- 3,000 piles of bloodstone dust
- 1,500 Empyreal fragments
- 500 Bottles of airship oil
My dilemma is; should I destroy them or not?
I’m reaching but… what about a BIOS flash? Ryzen is pretty new so I’m wondering if you MOBO needs a kicking. First check with more tech savvy folk than me though.
Also re-seat any cards you might have, Run a -repair. Do the stuff suggested above.
Blimey, I’m slacking – I’m only at 58. Ha!
Story – not really interested in the story element so only played to access the new map (which was slightly refreshing as I haven’t been able to get to BF yet due to that map’s access being story-locked. Frustrating).
Mastery – haven’t found how to access/find it yet. Loathe to check spoilers or Wiki.
Map – not my cup of tea. I really get frustrated with the jumping element in GW2 – if I wanted a platform game, I’d re-buy/install “Rainbow Islands”. Also, some of the terrain is weird in that you think you’re running up an incline, but, in fact, you are blocked by a mini ledge; and some rocks that look jump-able are misleadingly too high. And I disagree with it looking beautiful; a lot of core Tyria is much more easy on the eye.
Sorry guys, Lake Doric is orders of magnitude better. I won’t be going back to Draconis for a while.
All of this is opinion however, so please treat as such
I also prefer the old LA. It had much more character in my opinion. The current incarnation feels too clinical somehow. I avoid going there.
I got an in-game email. Just now.
Kudzu was attached as well a certificate that stated that "Dear [in-game character name], you have successfully defeated Guild Wars 2. You may now bear the title of “Uber” and all our base are belong to you."
To the OP, I was also RP curious having come from the early MUD’s of yesteryear. I posted on these forums about it here:
Some excellent replies which I hope will help.
Mind you, I had a look at the LFG tool just now for RP and what I got was… odd. An LFG for Pokemon RP. Er… /confused face.
Can I have your stuff?
;)
Can’t agree to “math” or “mathematics”.
Where I come from it’s pronounced “maphs”
Anyway, if I could use a staff in each hand, would I be dual-wielding staves?
No foxes! They make so much noise around here, I don’t want to hear their infernal screeching in-game as well! Bah!
:D
Reducing shadows may also help. Also, can that CPU be overclocked?
ETA – this thread may get moved to the tech. boards.
The word “armor” isn’t a real word either. Neither is “humor”.
To prove it, type the words into a reply here; the words are underlined in red.
Now, “armour” and “humour” are correct.
PS
Yes, I’m kidding – my ability to write tongue-in-cheek is lacking. One thing that does bake my noodle though is " I could care less".
Ranger AKA Daryl Dixon
Shame we don’t have crossbows in-game.
I mainly play my ranger but I do mix it up a bit every now and then.
I feel sad when ambient creatires get caught in the crossfire.
I want the trait “Omnipotent”.
For new players, it would help if the info was updated…
I would like a map editor so I could create maps that other people can play
I want a key bind for finish JP
I would like to be able to buy MP’s from the TP
I don’t go to the gem shop much. Anet have some of my spondoolics now as I just had to have the glider. It is, to quote the vernacular, awesome.
No shrinkage please or I’ll be wanting a refund
PS
Agree with others about the abyssal dye. It would be nice to be really black.
Played for an hour or so tonight.
Main is a PvE ranger who is almost always solo. I can’t see any significant difference at all so far. Was there supposed to be?
Well, with the update imminent and me off to bed, I can only hope for one thing: the devs/producers/sysadmin et al listen to the player base. Oh yes, I want.
Too many times in too many MMO’s this failed to happen and it caused much unhappiness. Players leave. All we see are rolling tumbleweeds. I hope that doesn’t happen here.
Pwease don’t hurt the ranger.
Pwease can engi’s get back targetable turrets?
Teleport to a friend should work. If you have one ask a friend/guildie to let you port to them on that map. After that you can buy the map portal scroll for alts.
Yes, that would be the way to go except for two reasons:
- I am in a guild of one. My fault!
- I don’t have anyone friended. Again, my fault!
The Bitter Cold area is very small and has pretty much nothing to see or do in. Once you complete the story step, you have 24 hours of cold resistance left to explore that area, get the mastery insight, etc.
Minor correction: you do not have 24 game hours (like the guild buffs), not even 24 real-time hours. You have it until next reset, wether that is 23h30min or 10 minutes.
In all the rest, I agree.
Wait, wait… what? I hope I’m misunderstanding here, but are you saying you have to have the potion just to explore BF or just one small segment of it related to the story?
I’m not a fan of the gated access for players who bought HoT. Once the maps are released anyone who has HoT should have access to the map because not everyone jumps on playing the stories. I did play the stories myself but I’m sure there are many people who haven’t played the LWS3 episodes yet.
I really wish the cold resist had been an account wide mastery rather than something you have to do every single day. The recipe isn’t even account wide where other recipes are.
Right, I’m with you on this which is why I raised the question. I’m not a big fan on the story line although I appreciate many are. Probably because I’m stuck at one step (the Aurean thing or however you spell her name) which I’m finding long winded and frustrating. But then I never was a “good” gamer.
Ah well, that’ll be one map I’ll never see.
Is the only way there via finishing the relevant piece of LS3?
Yay! Got the POI for map completion. Thank you to a fellow player “Namez”. Kudos to you. Died horribly (again) on the climb up – this needs fixing; solo-ing this is a suicide mission. Not to mention the tiny JP is well awkward.
So now, I’m after that druid staff. Bit annoying you have to repeat the heart to access the goods – having it available once a day without repeating would be better. Some hearts take way too long – which is fine the first time, but after that, life get’s tedious, dunnit?
Having played this for a few days now, I’ll chip in with what I’ve experienced.
- Not done the story. And won’t. Reason? I’m very useless when it comes to gaming and the comments about the last fight have me running scared.
- Lake Doric. Love the map, love the PvE, love the fact that MP’s are attainable (with a little thought and practice), love the events that crop up. Hate the POI in the leather farm – but that’s entirely me being gaming-challenged
- Ooooh! A new druid staff! Oh yes, I want.
- Death to the White Mantle. I’m going to start a campaign of a global Tyrian cleansing of their sort, oh yes. kitten their AoE and heals. kitten their stealth. kitten their blocks.
- kitten I haven’t got any phat lewt yet.
- Could do with a new ranger pet to charm.
- Love the NPC’s taking initiative instead of just standing still watching an ally die in front of them.
- Lastly, this map made me feel I’ve really progressed my character and accomplished… stuff. Cheers for that.
Now, that POI…
Imagine if cats had thumbs.
Anyway, as a Ranger, I have a number of pets to call on. But, really, I want a Liger. Yes, Liger.
Not a juvenile one, no. A full blown, real life-sized, fully grown Liger. White Mantle Cleric, hear me rawr.
I just need the POI here but it’s infuriating to get to solo. Ergo, no map completion for me.
Any tips please?
Interesting idea – I’m so used to using tomes to level up, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to do it all again from scratch – I may create a new character and do just that!
Mind you, I won’t be doing the Twitter thing as I’ve never used/don’t know how to use it – but then that’s my fault
So where are the most popular haunts for RP?
If a clickable character bio ever became a thing, I think instead of using it as a bio, I would use it as a first impression thing:
“The asura female you see before you looks young, but she exudes experience. Her clothes are a bit worn, her weapons well taken care of, she definitely doesn’t stay in cities for long. She’s an adventurer.
You notice that she’s looking at you…"
Something like that.
+1 to that.
In fact, you could take it one stage further and have exactly as you say but have a bio as well. But then, as I said before, that could cause anal-ness
Incidentally, I didn’t get the chance to RP at all tonight. I’ve seen DR around the bank and a pub in Queensdale just outside the city are popular haunts for RP; where else is a good place to get involved?
As for the character biography: Warcraft has that as an add-on. Half of the biographies there are steamy descriptions of the character and a list of kinks the player has. The other half of them are long walls of text detailing every single tattoo, scar, dead relative, special weapon and pointless title that the character has..
Never played WoW but I have seen this elsewhere. It made me wonder if there was some huge back story that I’d missed or this particular person was extremely “important” in some way. Very anal. Perhaps there could be a character limit, say, 250? 500?
Anyway, I’m going to see how some RP pans out later – I’ve not really tried very hard up to this point so it could be a new angle to the game for me. However,I’ve just charmed a new pet I didn’t know existed so perhaps I’ll see what it can do first
A bio section in the UI would be great. It was something my MUD had and EQ/2 also.
I had this problem a couple of times almost a year ago. It is usually to do with a connection in your computer that is loose/faulty and is failing under stress. The buzzing sound from speakers usually indicates a hardware problem. I would try reseating the GPU and the RAM, but also clean the dust of your computer in particular your heatsinks.
For me, it was reseating my RAM that fixed the problem.
Certainly, a loose connections could cause this but, in my case, that wasn’t/hasn’t been true. My old rig was serviced after this was happening and all appeared to be in order. My new rig has seen it happen a few times but (touch wood) few and far between.
I have heard it could be PSU related whereby the PSU is under powered. in both cases not as both have been 1KW bricks (type in sig).
I have also heard of it being sound driver related. I cannot contest that however; it appears to only happen in GW2 and I haven’t updated my drivers.
In each case, the PC has rebooted itself and, looking at the event journal, it always appears as a “kernel event 41 task 63” – which is a really uninformative message and there’s not any real answers out there for that.
Hmm, not seeing that here. What address are you pinging?
I don’t PvP. Ever. And no, I haven’t tried it simply because I don’t want to. I come here for PvE only as that doesn’t make me feel like I’m in some competition – and that does not relax me.
Thanks for the replies all.
It does seem, then, that the RP in GW2 does follow similar lines as to what I’d experienced in my old MUD – I thought I was missing something!
An interesting point was made about running a large chat window – great idea, that would certainly hark back the ancient interface I was used to.
I had a though it would be along the lines of: Player A is talking to Player B about people in Queensdale and what they were getting up to. Player C comes along and mentions that Ine Duran needs grubs and, after some chit-chat, you all go off and help, RP’ing the event all the way.
It’s a series of questions really:
- What IS “roleplay” in GW2?
- How do you “roleplay” in GW2?
- Is “roleplay” defined by lore or is lore non-mandatory?
An explanation as to why I ask (should you choose to read my long, meandering thought processes!):
Way back when, my first foray into online gaming was via a text only MUD. In the game a I played almost exclusively, moods and many deeds were carried out in the format of “emotes”, either predefined by the game engine (/sit, /stand, /laugh, /noo! etc.), or by customised, on-the-fly, player defined.
For example, typing /em bangs on his chest and roars would return, in text:
Thunderpants Gildedthighs bangs on his chest and roars
This would convey the mood of the moment, what the player is trying to convey to the locale etc.
In GW2, this would also only have a text response as there would be no animation for this. So, in the context of the MUD world, the “visual” would be left to the player’s imagination but, in terms of GW2, you see a static character with just the text.
Is this considered “roleplay” in GW2 terms? And is this how roleplayers actually play? The resons for me asking this is that, since I gave up my MUD and went “graphics” (EQ, EQ2, GW2), “static” characters i.e. not actually doing what you emote (for obvious reasons) detracted from the “feel” – so I’ve dropped roleplaying as such for many years. I’d like to claw my way back into things but I thought I’d like to hear your thoughts first…
In GW2 (and I guess GW before it), there’s a lot of lore gone under the bridge, about which I know 0.001%. During roleplay, is it necessary one know’s at least a certain amount before commencing?
Lastly, but by no means least, I often see in map chat or /say, “Do you want to roleplay?”. To me this is a very strange question; back to my MUD, roleplay was there 99% of the time; players would remain IC, opting out to OOC stuff very rarely. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks for reading, looking forward to replies!
Have you had a look at your event log? I’ve found that, over time and at completely random intervals, my PC would crash (only in GW2) with an “Event ID 41” and a “Task Category 63” relating to a kernel power source. It hasn’t happened for months but it just did it again – the common denominator being a GW2 update followed by a Windows one.
Coincidence?
I have no idea but researching the event error reveals no real solutions: some point to defective PSU’s, HD’s being in power save mode, un-seated GPU’s, you name it. No definitive answer and I’ve posted this one before. My rig is quite (well, -ish) new and I’ve changed nothing my end. Specs in sig.
Annoying.
Less verticality. And less platform-y. Sometimes I think I’m playing Rainbow Islands or Prince of Persia from the 80’s.
Black screens appear to be a bit random for me – I can’t replicate the crash when I get back in. I’ve actually had my rig reboot itself and lose it’s overclock settings in the BIOS over it. And this is a fairly new PC – bought in May.
I’m seeing an FPS drop too. Also micro stuttering and random freezes which last a couple of seconds, especially after loading a new zone.
