Nice find. I haven’t tried that yet but will give it a go – it sounds like busy areas could benefit. Now all I need to do is figure out where, in AVG, I can set the exceptions. Maybe a job for the weekend
I really don’t know why there aren’t more replies to this thread as this has really helped.
Try the -fowardrenderer switch God of Fissures posted about. It might help.
+1 for -forwardrenderer.
OK, I’ve experimented a little further.
With -forwardrenderer on, yes, shadows go missing. However, if I switch shadows off (yeah, I know) and the same with reflections, I can get back up to very respectable 50fps in rural areas. In town, it dips horribly but not as much as it did before.
Thank you Fissure God!
Well, that did add a few extra frames – perhaps 7-10 or so; not back to the halcyon days of when everything was silky smooth but every little helps.
Kudos to you and I would recommend bunging this into the command line.
All my cores are unparked. All six are running at 4~ ghz. I still suffer FPS drops.
If you had a single chip graphics card, your FPS would be insanely high
One of my friends plays on a computer with 12 GB DDR3 and an i7 930 @ 3.3 GHz with GTX 480 two way setup (plays with single mode most of the time preferrably) and he get’s high frame rates in the 100 range in PVE
Interesting.
The only thing I’d say there is that, while I’m tempted to rip out my 5970 and replace it with a GTX780 (with Twin Frozr), I’ve heard that even this card has issues sometimes. That’s quite a lot of cash to splash on a card that isn’t 100% guaranteed to work…
Guess I’d better try those new 13.10 drivers first, eh?
Ooooh! Nice! What FPS are you getting?
1.6ghz is, indeed, going to introduce you to the world of slideshows.
Yes.
You are not the only one experiencing bad FPS despite having a good rig. The link provided gives reading material as to what can be done to try and alleviate this – whether it works for your not is… well, mileage will vary.
I realise I’ve replied to a number of FPS threads now, but I do feel this one needs an answer. Would anyone at Anet be available for comment? I, personally, am into the third month of FPS woes without anything on the horizon in terms of a fix of some kind.
Many thanks.
It’s a great tip, to be sure, but my connection is deffo affixed to me GPU. /sigh
All my cores are unparked. All six are running at 4~ ghz. I still suffer FPS drops.
“playable again”, implies the game ran well at some point…
Have you changed anything at all with your hardware/software carshalash? Driver update? New GPU?
System specs would be welcome too.
Yes, it done run well – really well – at one point, up to the 2nd of July 2013 for me. Then, it started running like Hades had a case of Delhi-Belly in reverse.

Except that that won’t help everyone. Appreciate the post but it’s all been tried before and, for a lot folks, to no avail:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Optimization
There’s a huge amount of info and links here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Optimization
So far, there’s been nothing other than the usual “fixes” that don’t seem to help
Something that gives me back the FPS I had when I first started. As it stands, it’s almost unplayable now (for me, at least).
That’s a pretty top-notch rig that should, on paper at least, run GW2 as smooth as silk. But, and this is a big but, there is no guaranty.
In an attempt to bring all FPS threads into one, here are (I think all) of the ones I could find in a quick search- they were on another thread that I guess got erased:

Title says it all, really. I, for one, am very interested in what the Dev’s would like to put forward about this, especially in ways we can get our rigs to perform better.
I’ve tried all of the standard stuff and tweaked the latest settings but my performance is still poor in a game that, when I first started playing, was very smooth indeed.
You’ll need to be careful around anything that could be called a macro in GW2. Anet don’t allow them. You’ll need to check directly with them to see if what you want is allowable then find something that will make it work.
in bold is the key of your problem . the game;s engine is dx 9 optimized show give a try to play the game in xp sp3 compatibility mode ( right click on the gw2 shortcut and choose under the compatibility tab the xp sp3 option ) and post here if you continue have fps problems
I’m not in a position to try this at the moment, but can anyone confirm this is a possible solution to FPS woes?
If so, sir/madam, you deserve kudos of the highest order!
I dream of 45 FPS. In LA, the best I’ll get is 9 (yes, nine). In an unpopulated PvE area, I’ll be lucky to get 35.
I have been getting the same thing for the last two months, actually. The only thing that helps is a complete log off and reboot, have done all the usual “client side” checks, to no avail.
I guess the game is just meant make me feel like I am running in a big pool of pudding most of the time.
^ This. Same here.
Gosh, seems I already said that on another thread! Guess I’m not the only one experiencing FPS issues
When the game first came out I had no issues…
Recently I started playing again and I am getting at max 10fps on my HD7970.
After trawling the forums it seems many people are having the same issue and also waiting for a fix. – which, judging by the amount of complaints over the amount of time probably will never happen.
^ This. Same with me.
You’d be better off with a desktop but even then there’re no guaranties.
TBH i stoped playing GW2 now pritty much. I pop on now and then just to ..well i end up doing nothing most the time lol. I just dont feel the need to play GW2 anymore, specialy with the performance issues..
I’m pretty much getting that way myself.
Tried just about everything but a patch ruined my day a month or so ago. I don’t play for longer than maybe thirty minutes; I keep hoping something will change to improve the FPS but it never does
Looks like it’s time to move on…
Systems specs in sig.
35FPS in rural areas with no buildings and no other players.
10-15FPS when introducing any of the above.
“Best performance” makes no difference.
I don’t even bother trying PvP or WvW. No point.
It didn’t used to be like this before July.
What I don’t get though, is that something changed over the past month or two that caused my FPS to fall through the floor. And I have an AMD GPU. AFAIK, nothing changed on my end except the game patched (or had a new build or whatever you want to call it).
1.6ghz is really slow by today’s standards – are you sure that’s it’s speed?
So how should a Gulftown i7 980x @ 4.0ghz handle the game?
I have researched this a little today already and I have tied this method with no effect.. any other suggestions? I was also thinking of upgrading to windows 8 64bit I’m sure that would help too maybe?
It can’t hurt.
Please bear in mind that I’m really not an expert on this but there are other things you can try.
- Reinstall the game
- Run Speccy to see if your PC is OK
- Run CPUz and GPUz to check for high temps and other things
- Have a look at your GPU driver suite to see if it’s up-to-date
- Run a Guild Wars 2 advisor report (that’s up in the sticky threads above)
- Post the spec of your PC so others can chime in
I wish you luck!
I’d like to know if the FPS issue is being looked into. Mine started with a build that happened on 2nd July and since then, I struggle to get over 20FPS in rural areas with low settings.
Specs in sig and I’ve done a bunch of tests recommended by Anet. All tests came back saying my hardware is good enough (and cool enough temp-wise) and exceeding minimum settings by quite a wide margin.
OK, I’m no expert but given the “failure on …” above, the first thing I would do is a -repair. It might not work but it would certainly do no harm.
Here’s how Anet advise you do a repair:-
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 folder, which by default should be C:\Program Files(x86)\Guild Wars 2.
2. Move this folder to a new location like C:\Games\Guild Wars 2. The location doesn’t matter specifically, as long as it’s outside of Program Files and Program Files(x86).
3. Navigate to this new location and “Right-click” on “GW2.exe” selecting “Create Shortcut.”
4. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Admin Mode.”
5. “Right-click” on “Guild Wars 2 Admin Mode” and select “Properties.”
6. Click the “Compatibility” tab.
7. Checkmark “Run this program as an Administrator.”
8. Click “Ok.”
Once completed, let’s go ahead and repair the new installation location:
1. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”
2. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Repair.”
3. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”
4. Edit the “Target” line to include -repair at the end.
Note: Please make sure -repair is outside of the quotes
Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -repair
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -repair”
5. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.
If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try step 5 again.
8. Right-click “Guild Wars 2 Repair” and select “Run as Administrator.”
Allow the repair to run and once completed, double click on “Guild Wars 2 Admin Mode” to launch the game.

Can you reapply the thermal paste between your CPU and cooler?
I can’t argue with those specs but I’d like to add that some o/c-ing might be an idea. There’s no guaranties with that though.
Once you get into MMORPG’s, it’s nearly a given you have to start understanding exactly what your computer hardware is/does. You also need to understand what FPS means, what lag means, what O/C means and, yes, basically, a lot of technology you may not have been familiar with before.
It’s a learning curve.
When you get issues, you also need to know what information to post so others/devs can help you.
“It doesn’t work” is the tip of a hugely massive iceberg that reaches into the very bowels of hades before you get to the bottom of your issue(s).
An overheating piece of kit is one thing. Getting horrible FPS after a build is another.
There’s a lot of people experiencing FPS drops of late. Suggest you try some of the stuff they’ve done (including me):
Look for temperature problems using GPU-Z and CPU-Z
-repair the game
Have up-to-date drivers
Run Speccy (the link is on this forum somewhere) to check your hardware
Run Heaven (ditto)
Post your dxdiag
Post your GW2 test file
I know, it’s a pain. And to add to that – sorry! – I’ve done all of the above and more but nothing has worked so far.
Next steps for me will be: 1) Delete the game and reinstall 2) Reinstall Windows (ugh) 3) Get a new GPU (ouch).
Turn off crossfire using CCC. Makes a world of difference for this game.
How do you turn crossfire off in CCC? I can see no option to do that.
Replaced the card? Or did they just put the original one into the proper PCI slot? The reason I ask is that I have exactly the same GPU as you and GPU-Z gives me the 2.0 × 16 @ x16 2.0 result from the bus interface – and yet I’ve never been able to get above 25 FPS since 2nd July. And this build makes no change to that at all.
My frames are still between 10-22. I had hopes there’d be some code optimisation in this build that put me back to the performance I was experiencing before 2nd July. Sadly, that isn’t the case.
Your FPS would be increased if you could disable crossfire on your Radeon HD 5970.
GW2 hates crossfire.
Late reply, sorry. I’ve tried running in windowed mode (which, I understand, uses only one core) but I notice no difference whatsoever.
Update: a repair didn’t work for me.
Your grandmother/uncle/sister/significant other has come into a bit of money and offers to buy you a GPU to enhance your GW2 experience. Do you:
A: Go for a Radeon 7990
B: Go for a GTX 780 (Twin Frozr edition)
C: Opt for a Titan coz, like, it’s top of the food chain (at least for now) man.
D: Choose a different configuration (please specify).
Thanks!
You could also try reseating the card. Worth a try at least.
@ x16 2.0 is the desired result. As for the question mark, I have no idea. However, it shows the question mark you mention in a screen shot on the application’s main website page:
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
picture:
http://tpucdn.com/gpuz/screen1.gif
Um, oops, /facepalm /redface and all that. That question mark I was seeing was from a screenshot rather than when running the app. /ahem.
If I run the app, the question mark drills down to another screen where a render test can be performed.
What can I say? It was late blah, blah, blah.
You’re not alone. A lot of people are seeing FPS’s issues.
There doesn’t seem to be a pattern or single answer (and I’ve tried everything bar a game reinstall, a Windows reinstall and a new GPU).
Mine started a few patches ago – 2nd July to be precise – which, I think, seems to be similar to other peeps on here.
If I locked some of my CPU cores – say, three of the six – and/or turned off HT, could FPS be increased?
Hah! Beat me to it!
