I agree with the OP, with one little exception: The reason we almost never use the mist form ability is not primarily because our 1&2 are so weak, but it has such a ridiculously long cooldown (about 8 to 10 seconds?), so against normal players you will NEVER be able to even use it before it comes off cooldown. Solution: Lower the cooldown significantly to allow interrupting a stomp.
I vividly remember dying next to another ele, while there was an enemy right at our corpses. We where both immobilizing him, shooting little flashes at his knees as he just leasurely kills my ally. And then he did the animation again…i could see the cooldown on my mist form starting to get lower. I was like, hell yes i can actually waste somebody elses time when downed for once. But nope he killed me too, just as my mist form reached 0.1 sec cooldown. It felt absolutely horrible.
So it aint just bad, its kitten double bad. You can tell a joke to your friends (about ele downed state) and still have time to kill that downed ele before he can waste 3 seconds of your precious time. Our downed is so bad people basically have the time to kill you twice while a thief or mesmer or pretty much everyone has an option for immediate interruption, and then some. (smokebomb, damage from illusions and phantasm, etc)
Our 2 and 3 dont even have synergy because even if we COULD mist form more than once every blue moon, they’d just follow us and still render our immobilize useless. fix plz. Preferably by changing our kitten kitteny crap poo 2, since you can basically compare mist form to smoke bomb. Then again i love mist form so i dont mind being able to actually use that, so whatever. Just do something.

More attention to ele downed state? Lol. I get picked out of groups of 5 and then zerged by 5 enemies BECAUSE everyone knows we dont have a downed state.
Forget just having lowest hp and armor, you’re also putting a hugekitten bulls eye on yourself because you just DIE when downed.
Anyway im not too scared about our downed. I just dont see Arenanet keeping it like it is. No way.
Umm arenas hehe
Something akin to AB in WoW (YES I’M DUCKING!).

Lol i havent had this happen before.
I’ve taken half my hp in falling damage from using Ride the Lightning over the Keep Stairs though. Tiny little stairs basically breaking my legs while im a ball of lightning without legs. It also puts me in ‘dropped to floor’ animation, laying down on the ground with my face down. Like that you can then move around for a little bit, sliding half dead over the ground.
I can’t wait until they nerf Moa and every Mesmer switches to Time Warp. Then the real crying will begin.
Nah, because the people crying aren’t playing serious PvP anyway where Time Warp matters.
Im glad you guys arent even trying to hide how ridiculous Time Warp is. A false feeling of superiority seeps through your posts like ooze just like most mesmers, but at least you’re fair on time warp.

MCDonalds isnt unhealthy, you just need to work out more.
Cars dont need brakes, you just drive too fast.
CEO’s of major banks arent way too rich, you’re just poor.
The amount of third grade discussion skills on these forums are staggering.
The blog post was mentioned last week at the earliest. And yet, here you are.
You are totally wrong, and yet here you are. Doesnt that seem a bit ridiculous to you?
So eh did you make some screenshots of what he was saying? Or where you so nervous, like a giddy little schoolgirl, that a dev was in your group and only took pics of that?
Thats what you decided to show us? His end score? Way to let us down bro.
I read somewhere here that jon peters went to tpvp with some randoms. Before that he was in the Mists talking about the upcoming additions and future of spvp.
Umm..what? Why do you have time to go to some random server to talk about these things and not put em up here?
If engis are whining it is because they have a lot of bugs. If they actually feel underpowered they’rekittencrazy.
All should be like engis. Possible to spec for aoe dmg, bunker, can choose to get lots of knockbacks, can choose to get an amazing burst build. Quite a few choices that work for them, yet not feeling utterly overpowered and frustrating like a lot of other classes.
Can use some reduced knockbacking though, you can get netted and knockbacked from 100-0 as an ele. Maybe not 1v1, but if its a 2v2 you’ll probably drop.
The problem is same issue that early warlocks had in WoW(talking vanilla). While they were perfectly viable class, the amount of effort needed to do well with them, was much higher then other classes. A rogue could simply hit a few keys and stunlock people, while a warlock had to employ every skill in there arsenal just to keep pace.
Wrong, Warlocks where just simply kitten. Cant bekittento write an essay on why, if you played one during Vanilla you’d know. Where do people get this idea that if your class is hard to play it cant be underpowered?
Anyway we saw how they ended up later…overpowered and brainless playstyle. Although at high arena ratings they where a fair bit harder to play, but actually DID get enough pay off for working 3x as hard, unlike us elems.
Whats your point? That the thief is able to backstab and steal as they intended? WOW AMAZING THANK YOU SO MUCH OP I NEVER NOTICED.
Or are you trying to imply that everything is balanced, because a guardian can guard people? Eles are balanced just because they use elements as stated on the GW2 website?
Some of you dudes are really grasping for straws aint you.
“’elementalists aren’t meant to be played as conventional mages, drop your dps build and spec for earth/water’”
BUT THIS ACTUALLY IS THE SOLUTION.
Question, do you realise how broken this train of thought is?
Nekro if you wanna cry with us about our bad classes, stand in line. If you wanna start a fight, stand in line with the thiefs and mesmers waiting behind the bushes to kill us with MOA and Pistol Whip.
Thiefs’ Guild…
Guild Wars 2…
You might be onto something there sebulon
lol @ comparing eles to necros. What a ridiculous thing to do. Are we trying to win the medal for worst class or what?
Tankiest class in the entire game, thats hilarious. Any time i see a ‘tank elem’ HE HAS TO CHAIN ALL HIS CANTRIPS in a short order just to survive. I love meeting a support staff (or any staff) elem, because they try so hard to survive by popping all their cooldowns and dont even realise they aint doing kitten in that time. That is ofcourse if people can even be bothered to focus you down first, as all you are really doing is providing aoe condition removals. If you are fighting people with eyesight that is.
We are allright roamers, and its a fun job and all. But basically you’re just finishing up what your team has started, you come join a fight that is already halfway over and kill some people on low hp. Amazing. We cant stay at a base circle because we will become target nr1 and die utterly fast. Unless you try to be that failed pointholder without any massive full group heals, knockbacks, retaliation, just some splashes of water which cure a condition.
I dare say that most of the elementalists here that only post in the forums to say ‘u just suck @ ele lol i got no problems look at me i have a big weiner’ are getting carried hard in a game without any matchmaking.
Then the both of you are specced glass. More times than not, a glass ele is gonna die instantly when he runs into a 2v1 or even 2v2 for that matter.
Not really, the ones that dont know how to survive as a ele will probably die. In a 2v2 or 3v3 ele can survive very easily and should not die instantly if built correctly, even as glass.
Are you one of those ‘glass cannons’ that run around with your entire utility bar filled with cantrips?
Just so you know, rangers can also use haste and kill you just as quickly.
Frost Bow is mad awesome in pve. I always felt that it would get nerfed, the aoe dmg on the 4 skill i believe, is MAD.
Has this profession been tested during beta? Compared to my engineer the gap in playability seems huge. A real shame.
Oh yes it has been tested. And it has probably gotten the biggest nerfs of all during the last beta weekends. I dont even wanna know what kind of damage and horribly OP kitten we did if we got nerfed before Haste/PW and Mesmers and guardians.
So how long do we gotta wait before we can say something? four weeks isnt enough? Will you only allow us to post on the forums about imbalances after eight weeks? twelve?
How long do you guys think it takes for people to see imbalances in a new released MMO game? Why do you all cling to the weird notion that Arenanet has made this perfect game and that all of us, the players, should be utterly incapable of seeing any faults because they shouldnt exist? There’s still a lot of fanboying and hype going around here, and frankly i think that the people who say that balance is perfect in a fresh released MMO are the ones that are not seeing things clearly enough.
Thieves, Mesmers & Guardians: Is Frustration an Element of Balance?
in PvP

I dont get why LoL players always gotta compare stuff to their silly little champions. Its just confusing and pretty pointless to read if you havent played it. But from another post i can see that you play a mesmer and dont want them nerfed but all the other classes buffed to their power?
If you think that they will work on seven classes for months just so 1 class doesnt need to get nerfed i think you’re mistaken. In an MMO the developers usually take the easier, more sensible way to approach the problem.
As much as i hate mesmers, yes i would prefer them not to get nerfed and everyone else brought up to par, but this isnt fairy land.
Sharks: np stop playin towel build; Burst: np refer to sharks; Retaliation: np refer to sharks; 1 shot abilities: refer to sharks, if u play with 1hp and 2armor u will get 1 shot yarr. One shot cannons: refer to sharks.
Who cares that a pvp game is filled with one shotting siege weapons and pve mobs in almost all of the maps and 200% attack speed buffs and permanent retailiation, braindead stuff. Resilience will fix it! xD Oh, i mean Toughness.
And yeah, it is a team game. That doesnt make MOA any shorter or less ridiculous. TEN SECOND cc guys, cmon, that kitten belongs in WoW. And luckily mesmers get an even better skill for teamfights! Group wide Haste! Moa is fine because its worse than Time Warp?
Also ‘its not OP you can dodge it’ is something everyone can use, its an empty statement that if everyone uses it, must mean that the game is completely balanced.
So where are my ‘dodge this or die’ skills like MOA and whateverskillcoupledwithkittenquickness? Why are they on a select few classes, and why are those the ones that say its fine? Gosh, i wonder. Why dont we give everykittenclass a button that kills people unless dodged. That will surely be an extremely enjoyable game guys! If everyone can one shot everyone we have balance!
Go on, buff everyone up to get their own Quickness buff. See how wonderful this game will become.

Wrong, i had tournament tokens before i ever stepped into a tournament.
Oh the answer is to roll a guardian? isnt that what everyone is already doing, Haldunius? Thanks a lot for that amazing advice man.
Then why arent those ‘troll posts’ ever deleted? All i read here is ‘just dodge it’ and ‘practice harder noob’.
Fred, how does an elem achieve the same thing as ANY class with haste? What do i do to provide aoe knockback bubbles and full group heals and permanent retaliation and all while doing similar damage of a Guardian?
A well played elementalist is ACCEPTABLE, and by far not impossible to carry, but not up to par to all of the other classes if you actually sit down and compare stuff.
I kinda hope we get a small nerf or two and people jump ship….and there ARE things that need nerfing.
Wow arent you just the little gw2 mastermind standing out from the crowd. You must feel awesome to say ele needs nerfs. Keep touting your own horn in fake superiority.
And wtf d/d only possible build if fighting good players?? You realise dragons tooth can be used after updraft, on base circles, and gives 3 stacks of might in an aoe when used inside of flame ring? I find d/d eles to be failed thiefs without stealth and burst, walking around pretending to do amazing combos for amazing damage while getting blown up when sneezed at. Its so bad you gotta dump 30 in water and earth just so you dont get swatted like a fly.
Also with scepter you can do a double lightning at the same time plus a RTL. Which is actually sweet burst when used with the 20% more dmg trait, and updraft which gets followed up with a dragons tooth and phoenix, giving you vigor (along with extra endurance regen from sceptre trait for quadruple (?) the amount of dodges) and curing a condition.
Burst dps does scale from power, crit, and crit damage at the same time. Conditions dont have this, and a lot of condition damage amulet types simply dont exist for some reason.
Yes conditions ignore toughness, but i’d still agree that condition users should have some better amulet options.
Fire Grab 45 second cooldown 8k dmg crit when burning is applied and not removed as you run into melee range (then pray for it to miraculously hit) says hi.
Fix fire grab and the damage and cooldown and range (story of the elem’s life) is still kitten
I just recently started my Ele. About level 20, maybe 15 sPvP matches. I’m playing D/D and constantly changing my traits around.
I enjoy the class because there’s SO MUCH to do. Other classes tend to have a DPS rotation of a couple of skills. There’s a lot of skill involved in when to use utility/control/defensive skills, but for just doing damage it’s usually auto-attack plus one or two skills when they’re up. With my Elementalist, I’m playing Bach on my keyboard and it’s awesome. I’m constantly shifting between attunements for some really cool combos and awesome moments.
I’m still learning the class, and the complexity is a little overwhelming. However, it’s a glorious, chaotic, colorful mess and I’m loving it. I’m not sure what all the QQ is about, because the amount of damage you can pull out on an Elementalist is crazy. I can see having the issues you guys describe if you’re using a staff (AoE weapon) against a single player and trying to face-tank them, but I’ve not really had the issues. Yes, I die, but I’m a squishy and that’s what I expected going into it. However, with all of the different tools at my disposal I can counter almost every gimmick build.
I’m having a blast. If you’re not, play a different class.
Ah the joys of being a fresh new elementalist ^^ Not yet checking the combat log and seeing the difference in damage you take and deal compared to all other classes. All for giving yourself the smallest range of any light armor class and going melee for your burst.
And because I can’t edit my posts at the moment, I’ll have to double post: Yes, I also play D/D pvp with defensive (+ condition damage) specs, and with cantrips, and yes, I also can fend off myself. Elementalists have good condition damage. They’re nice at killing opponents while they’re spending their own time surviving.
But their power builds simply don’t work well enough. However, I’ve heard of a critical build with that arcana trait that gives vigor per critical, and it seems stronger than people are aware of. I might try it someday.
Arcana also has a scepter trait that gives higher base endurance regen which doesnt rely on a boon. Which actually you can use with vigor from phoenix. You dont even need to hit people with phoenix to remove a condition or get vigor. You can also cast it inside of the Fire Ring area to get 3 stacks of aoe might as well. Pretty amazing, but i sometimes find it hard to fit into an arcane build because of thatkittenmandatory 10 point talent. I’d have to give up a Grandmaster trait or 20% less cd on my only 2 free utility slots (cause stun break is also mandatory as elem, some use up to THREE to survive as glass cannon).
Anyway people are using it a lot actually. Arcana 30 seems to considered fairly mandatory anyway because of attune switch cooldowns.
The reward should come from the so called gameplay revolving around skill. Which is a point the game isnt at yet. For various reasons. Not the stats on the gear.
I think it was more of an it got overhyped and therefore had to be rushed to get released before the hype died down and people went to look elsewhere for their fun.
Once again i agree and think this is the case, or that they where just in need of a financial boost. Point is it does feel rushed. Anyway i probably agree with anything you say anyway so i’ll stop spamming the thread with my pessimistic opinions. (Actually im hopeful for GW2, but it will take time for sure and i hope i can wait long enough)

Winning is 20% more glory, which is most likely LESS than if you just zerged the whole game and lost. Broken and untested, a joke how this got through.
Although i guess the auto balance has something to do with this, as now you only lose 20% of your glory if you’re unlucky and get switches. Yep, great solution.
I would like to echo your opinion that the game still feels like a Beta atm. Speaking from pvp here, although dungeon difficulty is totally out of whack at parts as well, and many skill points and such are still broken. Bugs i can let slide, but the aforementioned 2 points sure make this game feel like a Beta.
I advice you to find a thread about the PvP Mystic Forge. See what items you can get for your rank, then preview them in the pvp locker. See what you want then buy chests appropriatly. People say that gold chests give the most chance of slivers, personally i have found 3 of them from silver chests multiple times and from rank up chests, but none from gold yet.
Theres 3 tier of items per 10 ranks you can craft (plus the tournament tokens you can use at any rank). As you might expect, copper gives most of the tier 1 of items, silver tier 2, and gold tier 3. But that doesnt have to mean that the higher tier items are better looking, so check out the locker. The arcane items are tiered as well, and drop from their respective chest. dust = copper crystal = silver sliver = gold. (over many, many chests, results may vary as if you’re lucky you can get higher tier items or mats from a chest)
A personal favorite of mine that i dont see many people talk about is buying copper chests to get a big stack of dusts. Then craft glory boosters with them as they take 10 arcane dusts but only 1 orb and 1 crystal. In that 1 hour of +50% glory you can buy many copper chests again.

Because i thought i could focus on 1 or 2 different attunements, as a bonus to a class that uses different elements. It seemed really interesting but it didnt work out as i thought at all. I figured that if im an Earth Elem, i have so much experience in it that i could for instance run around with rock around my body to give me extra toughness when in different attunements. I have MASTERED an element, and i can still only use it 25% of the time? I mastered earth but lose any proficiency at it when i switch to a different element? Elementalists arent masters of the elements at all.
I still think its an amazing fun class that i can probably play with a lot of joy if it had the power of the other classes. But it still has a lot of fundamental flaws, mostly that it feels like im LOSING OUT on abilities when switching, not that i suddenly increased my power and utility. If i need to use air, i dont go ‘YES I CAN BLOW kitten UP NOW’, i go ‘oh great now im forced to take a 10 second cooldown on my earth knockback i cant use right now’. And guess what, we arent durable enough to constantly put cooldowns on our spells we dont even use, let alone a massive cast time on all of them when we do use em.
Your view of the elementalist doesnt feel like its working, arena net. Switching attunements doesnt feel like a great gameplay idea, it feels like something detrimental that holds us back. The only way for us to get an advantage out of it is with a 10 point arcane trait, which guess what, is considered mandatory by now. And regen doesnt heal for anything unless you get water traits, 1 stack of might is nothing, swiftness is for running between kitten bases, oh i guess the whopping 4 second 33% dmg reduction is okay. Which actually puts you at the same survival as other classes because they will most likely have much higher hp and armor to offset that insane crazy 33% DR for 4 seconds on the most paper class of the game. Go check mesmers base hp and you will cry. They have a permant protection on compared to you.
Elementalist, masters of 1 attunement at a time, short buffs and wasted cooldowns.

No class in this kitten game is over-powered. Guardians, mesmers and thieves have a lower skill cap then the other classes, so when some one GOOD at this game uses them, it SEEMS op. Because we have the hot-join, which is full of trashcan scrub nobodies, the players with any skill whatsoever trainwreck these nerds all kitten day. Then the nerds come here and cry nerf, because they dont have the skill to play their own class well.
I play a full dps thief glasscannon, w/e and I faceroll through hotjoins all day everyday, no matter what class, this isn’t because thief is OP, it’s not because the classes I’m smashing are UP, it’s because they are bad and I am good.
I’m kittenin sick to death of these terrible kitten threads. I’ve come across elementalists (YES, THAT SO CALLED UNDERPOWERED DUMPSTER CLASS) necromancers and engineers who have full on buttfu.cked me into oblivion, because, you guessed it! THEY LEARNT TO kitten PLAY THEIR kitten CLASS YOU DUMB kitten.
ugh.
If you stop using a grand total of 2 different buttons and 3 seconds to get kills, maybe you’d learn to play as well.
haha i thought of this as well. Seems arena net didnt get rid of the holy trinity at all! Just replaced one with the other : D
Ooh i wondered how i’d get around all the lost time of not having a downed state, huge cast times, and endless shifting through attunements. Seems i wasnt using stealth or my no cooldown 4k crits! God, elem really is the toughest proffession to play, all of those skills and i never noticed the ones that blow em all out of the water.
But yeah, feeling pretty disgruntled by being told this is a pvp game. It HAS pvp, but it in no way feels polished enough to state its an e-sport ready game with amazing gameplay that revolves around skill. That was a blatant LIE and you basically took my money by lying to me, arena net. So im sorry if im a bit hesitant to throw up my arms in cheer when we get the same old PR speak and then still need to wait weeks to get some info on PLANNED stuff, that should have been in the game already.
Sometimes i think you guys dont even play pvp, because if you did, the problems would be hitting you square in the face and you’d have given us some word long ago.
(edited by GankSinatra.2653)
I think its funny that all of us players have clearly already created a meta, and anet developers still dont see any. If they’d play their game in pvp for longer than their coffee break they’d see one already.
‘before i cast meteor storm’
We’re talking about pvp dude.
We secretly don’t want them to buff elementalists so we can continue two second bursting them to death in pvp/wvw.
It feels soooo good to stomp an elem, not getting interrupted or knocked back and then zerged by friends. Its like a fresh little breeze on a hot summer day. If only i didnt feel his pain everytime i drive a flag through ones heart.
Because elem is seen as the ‘hardest’ proffession. People want to increase their kitten circumverence and weight, and what better way is there to play the hardest class, which is mostly hardest because it is weakest, and claiming that its all fine and you can own if you’re just skilled enough!
People havent played other chars thus have no clue, or the need to act like a celebrity on the forums is what i think causes it. It’s not very hard to pick out either of these types, some even have both. Hi Pinkerton
Well we still havent learned to play against mesmers after meeting at least one in every match for 4 weeks. So if you meet 3 mesmers in one team you’d probably need to practice for 12 weeks to beat them or develop strategies.
Dont forget how confusing and impossible to follow mesmers are. For this i recommend cleaning your room. Any chaos around your pc has the chance of focusing your attention away from those mesmers. Which is killer since you’re a noob if you cant beat mesmers, as anyone can do it if they just focus. You might wanna paint your walls a different color too, something more calming so you dont get confused so easily. Dont expect to beat mesmers unless you’re dedicated and skilled enough. Other than that they’re fine, you guys just cant put in the extra effort.
(edited by GankSinatra.2653)
Guardian, thief, and dont believe people that say mesmers are hard to play. They arent. Mesmer is also a good choice for a beginner as most of the damage just happens without you really needing to think much about it. All are pretty straightforward and can be very effective with minimal buttons, the ownage just comes naturally from using skills.
Or the mesmers would end up instantly dying of old age. Im ok with that.
I guess if fire for instance you can focus more on power, and get increased burning duration on some kind of rune to increase burning dmg instead of using condition dmg. Fire still has some (relative to our other spells) nice hitting damage even tho they put burning after. I’d still pick up a power+condition amulet tho.
For instance Fire attune – arcane blast – some other burn maybe auto attack for long burn duration – earth – bleeds. Doesnt take that long to set up and benefits greatly from condition damage and duration. When the time comes i like to use air as my ‘execute’. possibly 20% more dmg on double lightning strike and RTL. Updraft then switch to fire and dragon tooth. These things in turn benefit from power.
I guess it depends, and you can always try out your amulet/runes on the target dummy golems in The Mists.
sharks, lords, auto balance, underwater combat, burst, retaliation, haste, mesmers, guardians, 5 minute wait in tournies, cant duel while waiting, 10 second cc, bugged tournament chests, bugged skills, ‘its not OP you can dodge it’, ‘its not OP you just cant deal with it yet’, endless loading screens, magically removing conditions while touching the waters surface, magically going immune while touching the waters surface, lagspikes, bugged traits, downed state, imbalanced downed states, multiple classes with 1 shot abilties with lower cooldown than the 10 sec dodge regen, stupid scoring system, only 20% boost from winning, zerging in wvw, zerging in 8v8, one shotting trebs, cannons, release feeling worse than beta weekends, just a handful of maps, no arena like GW1, general lack of pvp attention from devs.
