Hey there! I am Melder, a thief.

I have played thief since beta, but have been very on and off regarding sPvP. Lately I have been playing quite a lot of soloq, but I want to move on to teamq with an organized team. I have played a few matches yoloqueueing teamq, but facing premade teams with one or two pugs on your own team is pretty much a dead end…

I am far from the best PvP thief around, but I know my way around and have excessive experience with the thief. I know the basic rotations and have pretty good awareness. I want to find like-minded and friendly players that want to grow and become better at tPvP together! Even form an official team and compete in some serious tourneys in the future.

Just respond to this post or message me in-game and we can play a few matches together and see if we can work together. Communicating with mumble, teamspeak or similar programs is a must!

Its not a bug. It works as intended, albeit it may feel irrational. Read the tooltip, it says “unblockable”. Both the poison ticks and the intitiating direct damage upon placement of the AoE are unblockable, and just like all other unblockable skills they do not trigger any on block effects. That includes removal of Aegis. It doesnt block anything, why should it be removed?

I can understand where you come from and i´d like Aegis to vanish when i use Choking Gas as well, but as far as i can tell, this ain´t a bug.

If it was blockable then they could actually block it completely so the poison field won’t appear. No thanks to that. I’d rather leave it as it is.

I sometimes push far, but that is only when I see that we can gain something from it. Decap when we are winning mid, holding 2 persons at far while my team 4v3 at mid or to kill and cap if I know I can (aka after mid is under control).

Pushing far should not be done by professions with low mobility or players that don’t know what they are doing. Having far decapped can win the game if you know what you are doing.

Had one match on Foefire where graveyard was constantly neutral. We won the match because I managed to keep far decapped while our bunker kept graveyard contested. An interesting match, but a rare one.

Hi!

I have recently started playing sPvP actively again. Had a long break due to work and other personal reasons, but want to pick up again.

I am playing a standard roaming d/p trickery thief. I have played the game since beta and been very active in all game modes. I am currently playing on average a few hours every day, but more when I can.

Would be awesome to join a PvP focused guild and ultimately form a tPvP team to compete in some serious tourneys.

I have been sticking to deadly arts, and actually revealed training. The 200 extra power is very noticeable, especially if you precast backstab into mug, even the auto attacks after or the heartseeker to finish off hit way harder because of that trait. I can see panic strike be better in more coordinated teams where people actually focus targets.

And yes, I love the condition removal on stealth! Much needed in the current meta.

I want to have some discussion going on the two current D/P meta builds. We have the 6/0/2/0/6 and the 2/6/0/0/6. Both utilize all the standard Trickery traits and Mug. DA usually have Improvisation and Revealed Training or Panic Strike. Critical Strikes usually have Practiced Tolerance and Executioner.

Which of these two builds would fit our role best?

My experience is that I am rarely staying above the threshold for first strikes, so I am rarely getting the bonus from that trait. This however is not true when I am on my shortbow since I am usually auto attacking and dropping poison fields. My foes do usually have conditions of some sort on them, so I am almost always having 10% extra damage when 5 deep in deadly arts. Executioner is pretty sweet when heartseeking or focusing down a target. Revealed training again are amazing for the added burst on backstab and the extra power when auto attacking.

I am honestly not sure which is better, which is why I want us as a community to discuss and figure it out ^^ any good theory crafters are very welcome to do some math on this.

So, which one do you fancy, and why? Which one do more damage all over? What do the builds excel at? These are some of the things I want to know.

Both builds use a different set of runes. Or at least I do. I choose eagle for the extra precision while in deadly arts and ogre runes when in critical strikes.

I am currently running D/P and Shortbow.

This is the build.

I am sometimes choosing Dagger Training over Improvisation, but that is rarely. I use eagle runes because the extra precision is pretty nice to have to keep pressure. Revealed Training is pretty sweet too. The extra power is quite noticable on both backstabs (precast backstab then steal) and auto attacks or heartseekers.

I completely agree with you Steb! I honestly have to say that I usually give credits to those who deserve it and I can’t remember the last time I flamed someone.

I do however enjoy it when people try to flame me. It mean that they waste time writing in the chat, while I do my best to contribute to the match.

The worst are when teammates start to flame.... That means that they don’t contribute and are just a liability...

Jokes aside; we have way more access to stealth, can teleport and bring team stealth. We don’t have any good ranged damage, but melee we should be feared.

If this is for PvP, then 2/6/0/0/6 or 6/0/2/0/6, both with berserker amulets. Shadow Arts isn’t viable in PvP because you can’t cap while in stealth, so try to use it offensively, not defensively.

If for WvW then x/6/6/x/x is a good start.

Is this consistent? If so, that’s a very neat technique.

As long as steal connects it works. But those very rare occasions when steal bug it fails :/

Conditions are the nemesis and counter of this build. Rely on shadowstep and stealth to clean them. But against those that can spam conditions you need to burst them down before they can stack the conditions.

It is a very common phenomenon in PvP. Especially when playing thief. It doesn’t matter what build we play, because we are always stealth and heartseeker spamming noobs. I’ll just keep wrecking those guys and improve if they defeat me instead of whining. Some people just can’t take a loss and immediately blames the opposing player for hacking or being op.

I still play my thief in soloq – having a blast! Actually ended up in a match last night with five thieves against two rangers, a warrior and two guardians. No one had ever believed we could do it, but we won because of timed bursts and superior mobility for back capping.

But yes, I do see a decrease in thieves…

I play a celestial d/f ele and sometimes experiment with celestial engi too, and although I don’t run the meta builds as far as traits and runes and utility skills go, I can say that their weakness is a good burst – a hard counter to my personal build is a good s/d thief or phantasm mesmer.

I would not rely heavily on conditions when fighting them, at least not eles. Engis are weaker against conditions but it’s always easier to fight both when they’re on the defense rather than offense.

And of course, any class that can rip/corrupt boons can also destroy both, since the only reason they’re so strong is that they stack might like crazy.

This. My d/p burst pretty much one shots those poor celestial elementalists. If I catch them below 50% health, that is a guaranteed game over for them.

Got accused for hacking today while I fought a guardian on point. Didn’t stealth, but used black powder and auto attacks to wear him down. He meant it was impossible to do so much damage without taking any. The poor lad stood inside the black powder all the time….

Yes. I do still get a lot of QQ, especially in WvW. In PvP it is long between, and when it happen it is usually somebody who accuse me of perma stealthing at running a completely different weapon set :p

When I see a thief drop shadow refuge in a duel it is usually game over for that poor lad. If I play a profession with some knockback I’ll use it. Have some heavy burst, I’ll do it. The thief usually go down if he use SR below 50% hp.

There are quite a few ways to counter SR, which any good tPvP player will know. I do see this skill being strong in WvW where shadow arts are meta.

Celestial is not the problem, strength runes and might in general are. Reduce the number of obtainable might stacks and nerf strength runes and you will see far less celestials running around.

  • Color track – rewards dyes
  • Remodel Track – rewards trans charges and hair kits / character kits on completion
  • Wealth track – rewards fixed price items to boost gold gain by a little bit (each reward gives like…5 items worth 10s each type of thing?)
  • Resource Track – As the track progresses, gives t1-6 materials and rewards rares at “check points”
  • Storage (Spring Cleaning) track – Rewards bags, black lion salvage kits, etc.
  • WvW track – rewards siege, silver, badges of honor (i cant imagine it being better farm that EotM though…)
  • Fractal track – various materials, fractal relics, and skin choice on complete
  • SAB track – (reactivate the bauble merchant) rewards baubles, miniature crafting items, weapon crafting items/pieces (these things are WAY too expensive on the TP, there needs to be a way to get these weapon skins)
  • <Insert Season> track – rewards similar items granted from event farming during Mad King, Wintersday, Jubilee, Dragon Bash, etc.

this may sound like a stupid question but why would you need panic strike on a weaponset(d/p) that can stick to targets easily?

Good question. The immobilize lasts pretty long. Which is usefull because you have such an easy time to get behind your target. Plus your target can’t dodge.

In a coordinated team it will be even better to spike someone down.

I have personally played around with revealed training instead (pre-casting backstab into steal) and found out it suited me better than panic strike. In an organized team I can see panic strike do better though.

Yes, I know the meta builds and have played them all, both in team and solo queue. But I do not consider myself experienced enough to make an in-depth guide about thief rotations and some of the good tricks the pros use, to actually make a guide out of it. That is why I request the help of fellow thieves that has more experience than me in he competitive scene.

The PvP guide will be a part of my Book of Shadows. I do not think I will post it elsewhere, but I’ll wait and see how people react and want. It is meant as a guide on how to play thief in tPvP.

Do you use this build in soloQ or teamQ? If so, could you send me a PM with some rotation tips and tactics? I am currently not a big fan of Shadow Arts in tPvP due to the fact that you won’t cap anything in stealth. I’ll test the build too and see.

The reason why i am not going 2 points in trickery is simply because I need those 2 points in Shadow Arts in order to deal with conditions :/ But you are right in what you are saying. It will give more damage, but I am looking at creating a viable build for WvW than can survive condition classes too.

[Suggestion] How to fix 4v5

Hi! I wrote a thread about this problem a few weeks ago, but that thread got merged with another in constructive thread and got completely ignored. I’ll write this again and hope that this thread doesn’t get merged, but taken seriously. This has been a problem for way too long and need to be fixed asap.

The Problem
Matches in solo and team queue start with uneven teams – often 4v5. This mean that the team with less players are almost guaranteed to lose, which is very frustrating since this affects their rating on the leader boards.

How to solve the problem
Implement a system that requires every single player to ready up by clicking an “I am ready” button or something similar. This has to be done within a given time frame (say 30 seconds). If one or more players haven’t clicked after the time runs out they get kicked out of queue and the others get put back into queue. This process repeat until 10 people are ready. This should have some sort of audio so that players can hear the queue pop if they aren’t at their computer at that time.

This system is similar to the one used in World of Warcraft and many other MMO’s and competitive PvP games, but it works. This will help a lot in getting a more happy and stable player base.

So… besides me anyone else tired of going for a rated match and it starts off with a 4 vs 5 game? I mean cmon it’s a rated match how is it possible that this still happens?! I understand that complications happen but couldn’t there be a timeout or something that when that timeout expires a new player is added? Yeah not fair for a player that dc’s… but it’s not fair for the other 4 players on a team right? Just putting this issue out there.

Everyone is tired of 4v5s. If you have a viable solution, please post a constructive thread describing how it may be solved so that the community can have a discussion.

If you search the forum for posts on this topic that Anet has responded to, you will see that both Anet and the community have been trying to figure out how to resolve this for a very long time. There is no simple solution since this is a player-created problem. If players did not leave on purpose, or afk’d at spawn to troll their teams, a solution would be easier to come up with. There is already a dishonor debuff to prevent repeated offenses.

If you truly want to avoid being on the team with a missing person, play in teamQ with 4 people you know (e.g., guild members or friends).

This isn’t a player created problem, it is a design problem. All, and I mean all other MMO’s or PvP games have a system that requires every single player to do a ready check before the match starts. If someone fail to click ready they get kicked out of queue and the rest go back into queue. Heck, even Wildstar had this implemented at launch! Just copy the system from wow and they’re done. But no, they “have now clue on how to fix this”.

I wrote a long, constructive and well formatted and titled post about this. That post got merged with another thread and ignored.

They will never admit they made a mistake….they never admit they make a mistake in any area of the game. Since sPvP has so little actual content, this one glaring mistake is simply engulfing and shows how one mistake, and their unwillingness to address it, can change the face of an entire company and their “policies” #eSports

Their dream of an esport got lost right after launch to be honest…. It’s just sad how little they care about their community’s feedback. I’ll just keep on yoloq teamq instead. No spirit watch or skycrap <3

Yes, I saw every point of your build.

I know you didn’t pick the heal on stealth trait, but I was just mentioning it since there will probably be quite a few other new thieves that read this. There was no offense intended.

However, Shortbow can be used in duels, especially against thieves. Many top thieves use it more than daggers actually. Thief is unfortunately not the king of 1v1 in the current meta. What we do have is extremely good mobility which let us move quickly around the map. We can decap their home and a few seconds later be back on mid aiding the team fight. Dropping AoE poison will help a lot in the team fight, even just auto attacking with Shortbow or using cluster bomb in a team fight can do amazing damage.

But as I understood it you want to be a duelist? sPvP is not about 1v1. It is about scoring points by holding nodes. Yes, killing do give points, but it is far more important to help out in a team fight than winning that 1v1. If you want to participate in the duel servers, then your build may do quite well, but in a conquest map it is not optimal. I do however give you credits for trying your own build! That is something many thieves fail to do, which also takes away a lot the experience needed. I’ll continue on my previous post with tips and build ideas ^^

Mug, adept trait in deadly arts, is better than sundering strikes btw. The heal and extra burst damage is invaluable.
