As a Mesmer, I’m pretty used to such a …
Wait for it..
Cry of Frustration!
edit: ugh.. Mailmail. You ninja’d my cheesy pun!
Thanks! I managed to wake my girlfriend up when this made me burst into laugh xD
I would love to see the PvP population grow, and I really think this can help! We’ll have to wait and see how stronghold changes stuff first though.
I for one would not leave conquest for 2v2 or 3v3. But I think ronpierce is right when he say that this may attract a lot of people from wow! The combat system is way better, there’s no monthly fee, better graphics, depth etc. Win/Win if you ask me. :p
We need this so badly! If any anet developer read this: Implement this stuff!
It is beyond me why none of this is already implemented…
Truths is right. I too have played a lot of PvP and haven’t had any matches start 4v5 after the change. A few times some people have left or got disconnected. These times the enemy team didn’t get any points on their mmr and my team didn’t lose any. So no worries about getting your score damaged by this.
You can Withdraw and then weapon swap to cancel the roll.
You serious?! I have played thief since beta, and I really thought I had learnt it all by now. Wow. Thanks man!
Gotta try this out tomorrow.
In the latest Go4 GW2 cup finale with The Abjured vs Dodge or Die I saw Magic Toker pull this move on mid fight on Legacy.
Anyone know how to do this? I think he used Infiltrators Arrow in combination with Withdraw inside Shadow Refuge. I don’t think this was possible and I really couldn’t believe my eyes…
Can anyone confirm this or share the knowledge on how to do it?
Try 5 venom-share p/d dire condition thieves! Done it a few times, lots of fun and almost impossible to counter :p
Before you could go do WvW or some PvE event while you waited. Why you can’t do this anymore is beyond me… There’s literally no downside in being able to play other parts of the game while you wait.
Just make it so that when the queue pops, you get ported directly to the map after you accepted.
Two tips for you: Use Sneak Attack (stealth skill) from Shadow Refuge and then spam unload. The extra damage/heal from life-stealing is incredible!
Also: Use Black Powder when stomping to secure a stomp.
I too run P/P for funzies!
(edited by Geiir.7603)
I see you’re complaining about stealth, but why? Why has it ruined your fun? What do you intent to add to compensate for such a huge nerf to two professions?
Try play a thief and mesmer, then come back and complain about it ruining your fun
You know why these players do these kind of things? (Zerging, not stomping etc) It is because they played practice! It is literally the only tactic used there. People join side with the winning team, roam around 5v4 the entire game and just zerg to win.
Practice is a place to practice new builds to learn the ups and downs of it. Not a place to practice rotations etc. That is where unranked come into play. This is where people who feel sufficient on their profession come to learn rotations and how this game really works. Ranked are for the hard-core competitors. If you see someone not knowing kitten about the game mode just tell them to go unranked until they feel competent enough for ranked.
Yes. I told you that because you stand out as a huge kitten that we don’t want in this community. If more than one person yelled at him, that doesn’t mean they’re ultimately right, does it?! I’ve had people rage at me (d/p thief) for not engaging a medi guard solo on point in his favor. I went somewhere else, +1 a fight, re-capped home and then went far with my mesmer to slay that guardian. The three other people on my team thought I was an idiot for not engaging my counter profession alone. We won that match (I carried hard), yet my team was kittened and claimed we would have won earlier if I had engaged that fight…
The fact that you say a thief can’t hold point for few seconds prove that you don’t know kitten about that profession. Ever played S/D?
Unranked is for learning. Ranked is for people that want to compete.
Don’t harass other people for being bad (anet has a crappy introduction for new players). Instead you should guide them on their path and you might get a new person really interested in PvP to stay, not leave.
What you guys call “toxic” we call competitive. PvP players are better at the game, undeniably. Better at controlling their character, better at reading enemy moves, better at reacting, and get more exciting in-game moments. There’s a reason why all the big game that get streamed to millions are PvP, because it’s where the dedicated are.
If you can hop in, roll with the verbal and in-game punches, and handle a little smack talk without QQing on the forums to the carebears, then you’ll fit right in and make some of the best gaming memories you’ll ever have!
If not… chest farming in Silverwastes is that way >>>>>
So, what you are saying is: if you are better at the game, you have the right to verbally abuse and harass other players? Such sportsmanship!
I bet you are one of those who kitten about long queues and too few PvP players. Yet, you are the reason more people won’t come to PvP.
There’s a reason all top PvP guilds have very strict rules that will have you permanently kicked for BMing and verbally abusing people. Any unsportsmanlike behavior will have you permanently kicked from these guilds, because they know that those kind of players are hurting and destroying PvP communities.
Uberkingkong: please uninstall. We don’t want people like you in our community.
When I see someone doing all the wrong things, I whisper them and tell them that I can show/tell them how it is suppose to be done. Raging at someone in unranked for not being the best player is just the most childish thing in this game. There will always be bad players (maybe your mmr isn’t as good as you think?), but that doesn’t give you any reason to start verbally abuse them and call them names. Why don’t you just offer your help instead?
I bet you are one of those who complain about long queue times and not enough players, but ultimately are the reason people are not playing PvP.
If I (a PvP player) go to PvE with a new profession and do a dungeon, which I perform badly in because I don’t know its mechanics (this is not a lvl 80 experienced people only group), and people start raging at me instead of showing me the way. You can bet that I would leave and go back to PvP instead, probably not doing that dungeon again for months. And it is the same thing the other way around. I’ve heard people say that they are never going back to PvP if this is the community. Bam. We just lost a potentially good player…
(edited by Geiir.7603)
Thief can be annoying, but you’ll get the best of them some day.
Try play one and you’ll learn how to beat them pretty hard
I advertise in the matches I play. People watching the stream can be very critical to my play, which is a very good way of getting better!
It is also a very good way to advertise the stream. Streamers doesn’t need to be good to get views, they just need to entertain
First of all: Welcome to the game! Secondly: WvW and PvP are two different worlds. WvW is open world PvP with PvE gear and stats. In PvP all stats are normalized and everyone has access to the same gear, runes, sigils and traits. In other words: PvP is about personal skill and build, not the best gear.
Since this is the PvP forum I’ll do a quick rundown of the professions for PvP.
Thief you can go for sustained damage with lots of evades for survivability or burst damage with stealth and blinds as survivability. Your main job is to +1 fights and roam the map. You target squishies or enemies with low health to dispatch them quicky and let your team do the mop up while you bolt off to somewhere else. Unparalleled mobility.
Elementalist
Ele has become a real jack of all trades. Sustained damage, good survivability and excellent team support. You can also choose to build them for support or pure damage.
Mesmer
This is imo one of the most difficult professions to play properly. Managing clones, shatters, positioning and the low health pool can prove to be really hard. But oh the damage! Brings good team support with AoE stealth, group teleport and quickness.
Ranger
I stay way over here and just nuke you down. Very high damage and decent survivability. Very dependent on good positioning to do anything. Have decent survivability and can be a real asset when played right.
Necromancer
Conditions or power. Powemancers can wreck an entire team if not dealt with quickly. Same with conditionmancers really. Tend to die very fast to enemy thieves and require extremely good positioning to work!
Engineer
Can be very hard to kill if played properly. Tons of aoe damage and control. Very good on-point. Haven’t played engi too much, so haven’t much more to say really :/
Warrior
I’ll smash your face! Literally. Good damage, both AoE and single target. Very hard to kill unless focused down or countered. Haven’t played too much warrior either…
Guardian
The bunker profession. You can build for survivability and team support that is simply unparalleled! You can also build for very high burst damage.
Hope this helped! Good luck and enjoy the game man!
I entered with a pre-made. When courtyard popped we all swapped to shadow arts p/d condition thieves with ricochet. We decided to troll the crap out of the opposing team (their entire team chose courtyard). We spent the first 14 minutes just running around, shadowstepping, stealthing with all our stealth skills and shadow refuge. The last minute we all focused one target and got a kill. One. Single. Kill. We won. Such skill.
You griefing people and intentionally ruining the game doesn’t mean it’s a bad map. I quite like it, but then I’m a big fan of roaming in WvW and run in to these small scale death matches all the time.
Griefing? How? I am simply using tactics to enrage the other team, hence have them play bad so that we could get an easy kill
If anything, courtyard is a truer test of pvp skills than all of the other maps. While the conquest maps offer a lot of strategy through node and objective control, success on courtyard relies heavily on pure pvp tactics and knowledge. It’s a full-on phalanx vs phalanx, where the most competent PvPers win – not the best back-cappers, split-pushers, PvE mob farmers.
Wrong.

Yeah, right. I think you forgot that the timer of Courtyard is 8 minutes, not 15.
Which further proves my point. I don’t know kitten about that map, other than how to survive and kill other players. There’s literally no tactics, the team that get the first kill usually wins because of snowballing.

Charr. Ash Legion fit so good with the sneakiness of thief!
The best looking thief I’ve ever seen was a Sylvari though.
My best tip when you see a thief on the enemy team in PvP:
If you can’t see the enemy thief on the mini map, expect him to be where you are, always.
And if you see a thief stealth near you with dagger main-hand. Don’t stand still or run off in one direction! Move around – a lot! I am still surprised at the number of times I see people just stop whatever they’re doing when I enter stealth. They’re seriously just giving up right there…
Die to svanir and the chieftain because I forget how to dodge…
Use Rabbit finisher to down dragon ranked players with Sanctum Sprinter title. When they ask me if I’m new to PvP I’ll say “no, I have played a lot of Sanctum Sprint!”. This is in ranked <3
I have on multiple occasions popped Shadow Refuge on already dead allies. This was when I was new to the game though.
I have also pretended to be a noob just for fun
I support it in theory, but it would be very hard to police, and somewhat open to abuse too. What’s to stop angry players from mass reporting some poor newbie who stumbled into Unranked and is doing all the classic mistakes like double-capping, zerging, or getting into pointless fights while all 3 points are capped? Without some form of chat confirmation, it can be very difficult to prove whether somebody is match manipulating or just a bad player.
Which is why I really hope that Anet save some match information, like scores, chat logs and so on. If they keep that then it will be very easy to spot wether this is a new player (they can just check his stats) or a veteran kitten.
5 spots left!
I witnessed 3 guardians on my team yesterday. I genuinely entered as a bunker guardian without being aware of the daily….. This was in RANKED…
Go play ranked, or better yet – hot join. We really don’t want players like you in ranked.
Courtyard is an awful map to have in a conquest queue. It is far too easy to snowball. I love to play condition thief in that map. People hate me because they literally can’t kill me, yet I sweep up the kills <3
Might is getting nerfed, so we might see fewer celestial builds in the future
I am actually glad to see this new flood of new players. As a veteran player this enlightens my day and I make sure to let them know that I can aid them in learn this new part of the game.
It is now our duty as experienced PvP players to learn this new players how it is suppose to be done, so that they may stay and our community may grow.
Hairseth is pleasant when he isn’t streaming. When he is, he’s the queen diva and he knows it, LOL. If you don’t understand that streamers have a persona when they stream, then, I just don’t know. You’re sticking out your tongue, so maybe you’re being sarcastic.
It was being sarcastic.
He seems like a good guy, but the personality he wrote just matched what he show on his stream so good. Gave me the giggles at least :p
After playing this game since beta I only have two characters that I always have fun with: Guardian and Thief. Your description is very close to accurate I dare say!
Fun initiative ^^
Btw; The part about mesmers; see Helseth :p
They’re going to nerf might pretty hard. We’ll have to wait and see how that turns out first.
I generally think they’re going in the wrong direction. They should make conditions/boons more dangerous and harder to apply. Like getting to max stacks of bleeding should be a serious team effort. Same with might. It shouldn’t be easy for anyone to go above 5 stacks alone…
They should make a far better tutorial explaining basic rotations and stuff. And add a rank limit (not too much though!)
Asura if for PvP. Asuras are small, so are their animations. This makes it harder for opponents to see what you are doing – hence reacting accordingly.
I wouldn’t get excited. Thieves should get the weakest of all upgrades since they have the strongest class atm.
Well put.
I hope they get the “Wet Noodle” elite skill, it hits for 3 damage and requires the user to wear zerker armor.
Thief MASTER CLASS.
This made my day!
Attachments:
Heartseeker: Very fine with this change. Remember the days of the #2 spamming thieves? It is meant as a finishing move and/or a gap closer. Not an attack that you could just spam to kill people.
Assassins Signet: Dude. 6 points in Critical Strikes for shorter signet cool down and 5 might stacks on signet use plus guaranteed critical hit from stealth, coupled with 50% damage. Just too much.
Cloak and Dagger: Should be reverted. Might bring D/D.
Quickness: They should have reverted the PW change when they implemented this. I’m fine with this change alone because 100 blade warriors and PW thieves were just too insane.
Mug: Fine with me. I need the heal more than the damage.
Shadow Return: Can still be cast while immobilized.
Infusion of Shadows: Perfectly fine with this! Stealth spamming d/p thieves in WvW were just too much. Even the worst player could win fights….
Black Powder: Fine with this too. Complete immunity in PvE and too strong in PvP.
Initiative buff/need: One of the best things they have ever done to the thief.
Only responded to those I had an input on.
Yeah. But sitting alone at mid with a good Mesmer and thief on my team is not a problem. I can hold most enemies off until they arrive.
But I agree. Bunker is a team fighting build. Popping #4 on staff with my entire team around is like full hp with one skill :p I usually end up feeling like a burden when I face a roaming comp – which is when I usually swap to my thief :p
We have been hit pretty darn hard with the nerf bat since launch, but we are still many thieves rockin’!
My first question to you: what game mode are you talking about mainly?
WvW: Excellent roamers! We can scout for our commanders and run supply with ease. If we want to live, there’s no way for you to actually kill us. Put us in a zerg – there’s little we can do. We excel at killing backline fighters and casters while the heavies smash together.
PvP: Roamer. Don’t play thief like a warrior, because we ain’t warriors. I play d/p thief in PvP, and 90% of the time I’m on shortbow. My job is to secure kills (dat burst, especially if an ally got an enemy below 50% health), decap far and generally harass my enemey. Because of my mobility I can +1 pretty much any fight on the map within 2-3 seconds. The very high attack speed make it very easy to steal boss kills on Forest. I find thief to be one of the most valuable professions for PvP conquest mode – if they know what they are doing.
PvE: Thief is sqishy, but have high damage and good cleave. I would rather have a warrior on my team, but if the thief know what he is doing he can be a real asset to the team!
So yeah, if you enjoy the gameplay and style of the thief – it is definitely worth playing one! If you don’t like anything of what I said above – then there’s no reason for you to play one atm :/
Edit: Don’t underestimate stealth! It offer some serious mind games – which is very strong in PvP! Dropping shadow refuge near a point will usually end with having 1-2 people staying there while I run off somewhere else to +1 a fight or decap a node.
I have been playing around with bunker guardian for the last weeks in ranked arena for the first time. So far I feel like I have been a great asset to my team by being able to hold off many foes for a long time, usually untill my team arrives. The only problem I can see is when facing very mobile comps. They simply play the two other points (I use forever to roam between) and can with that strategy just out-rotate my team. Those times I really shine are when my teammates are close to me (lots off boons and a ton of healing to myself).
Therefore I want to ask the community: How viable are bunker guardian in ranked arenas in the current meta? And do you think bunker guardian will be more viable after the might nerf?
Find a team and sign up guys
Just bumping this
Sign up guys! :p
You need a full team. The idea is to have a tournament where you really get to test your skills against teams of a similar level. Pro players are forbidden in the tournament, and once you have won you have to wait for 1 month before you can enter again. This is to ensure that no team dominate every single tournament.
Things like this wouldn’t be needed if we had a funcioning mathcmaking with a serious ladder with proper rewards. Just sayin.
Gratz for the try tho.
Which is exactly why ZeuS decided to do this!
For the community, byt the community.
(I am btw not a member of ZeuS, but participating in helping this tournament happen.)

I love Skyhammer, but there are good reasons some maps aren’t in ranked. Skyhammer is heavily in favor of cc oriented builds/professions (think necromancer, engineer). Spirit Watch is heavily in favor of movement oriented builds (thief, and again, engineer). They’re not in ranked because your team composition shouldn’t exclude you from the possibility to win.
Legacy of foefire is heavily in favor of bunker builds. 5 thieves/mesmers/necros are excluded from the possibility to win most of time….
I usually carry matches with my thief on legacy, so no idea where you got that from. The mobility simply outshines everything in that map when it comes to decapping
No. There’s one reason I never play unranked: those three maps. Spirit is okay, but Skyhammer and Courtyard are not suited for ranked play.
Hey guys!
Just wanted to tune in and let you know that ZeuS, a PvP guild, are hosting a tournament! This is going to be a bi-weekly tournament that is meant for those that think the ESL Weekly, WTS and Tournament of Glory are too much for them to handle. So if you have been placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any of those tournaments, you can’t compete in this one.
This means that all you need is a group of 5 people that want to play together Saturday the 31st of January for about 2 hours!
So what are you waiting for? Just click the link and sign up!

OP: Go 5/6/0/0/3 build with all zerker and signet in WvW. Now come and tell me it is over powered. That build is literally the only build available that can effectively kill anyone in one single combo. But what happens if the target has a stun break and can evade the burst? The poor thief is left dead a few seconds later.
More on topic: People have yet to understand how to counter thieves? We are over two years into this game, and people are still complaining about getting ganked by a roaming thief that is built for duels, while you are built for team fights and zergs….
I have all professions at lvl 80 and exotic geared (haven’t bothered with full ascended because I mainly play sPvP). When I meet a thief in wvw I school that poor thing. With. Every. Single. Profession. How you say? I know the thief. I know how he thinks, what defensive utilities he have and how he’s positioning himself. I just act on instinct and slay that poor man. If I fail to kill it and it run away – I technically won. I have time to retreat or group up with allies while that thief runs off in shame.
When I roam with my thief I am still baffled by the amount of people standing completely still when I go invisible. They literally just hand it over because they have no clue how I work. L2P is the main problem. Not the thief.
Hi!
I have been playing thief since the beta and pretty much every single weapon set and build. What I have yet to play (not just try, but really play) are S/D. But I am bit in the dark. The only time I have played with it was a long time ago when Larcenous Strike didn’t exist. I could use some pointers on how to think while using this awesome weapon set. I am most used to D/P, which has been my main set since launch, which has a completely different style of play.
I know how the skills work and all the technical stuff. But I could need help with when to use them. I feel like it is built around stacking might while evading all the big hits and just have good sustain since I am lacking burst. When I play it I try to stick to my target and auto attack and only use FS to evade or set up for LS.
Am I on to something?
Cheers!
First tip: never do the stomp in group fights! You are squishy, but deal a ton of damage. Your job is to poison the downed player (shortbow 4) and keep pressure on him and his allies. If anyone try to revive you can interrupt with steal or pistol off-hand 4. In general you should leave the stomping to more tankier specs while you keep the pressure up.
For safestomps you can use shadowstep (do this if it is absolutely necessary, since it is a stun break). Start the stomp, shadowstep away, use shadow return right before the stomp animation ends. What you usually need to do is just drop pistol off-hand 5 and just stomp. In fact: if you are in a fight and downed someone, immediately drop it and move on while your ally stomp.
