Queuing for WvWvW

Sitting in the queue for WvW on a character I didn’t feel like doing PvE on, I got to thinking…

It would be nice if there was an option to have a choice of which character I want to queue up with.

So, I hit the WvW button, click the button to pop into queue, and I get a prompt that says something like, “Select the character you would like to enter into WvWvW.” Then, when the queue pops, you’re sent in on that character, even if it’s not the one you were playing at the time.

My main is my ranger, and she uses Troll Unguent like a boss. With the sheer amount of movement I do during combat, the healing well is useless, and the direct heal doesn’t heal for as much as the Unguent does.

The rogue I’m playing right now, I haven’t even tried the other two heals yet. The first heal you get works fantastically, granting a secondary stealth and removing a condition.

Since this game is not, in fact, the first Guild Wars game, it should be taken on its own merits (and demerits, as the case may be). Which means that any experience in the first game is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

And I don’t care if somebody expresses their opinion. What I care about is when people tell me that I should shut up, because they don’t agree with me. Those people can go jump off a cliff for all I care, and those sorts of people are the types whose opinions I don’t respect.

Also, not every piece of criticism that you type is pure gold. And fanboying? Hardly. Maybe we just…I don’t know, like the game the way it was given to us? We don’t not want improvements, but we’re just not seeing the problems other people are. Because we’re blinded by fanboyism? Hardly. We just like the game. We’re not saying “OMG DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING, IT’S SO PEEEERFECT!” I, personally, am saying “I love where this game has gone. There are a few issues, but nothing huge, maybe just some tweaks here or there.” What I read other people saying? “OMG, I hate this! Cut it out of the game! Gimme something new! Kill off this character!” instead of “Could you improve upon this by doing x” or “Maybe re-record this character’s lines and give him some new dialouge?”

I think you should take the time to actually read the posts I’ve made, because it’s obvious you’re lumping me together with other people.

I made a thread about the dialogue here that has gotten a lot of attention. I’ve also been fairly active in a few other threads, where I’ve given civil opinions and feedback for the thread posters, and the developers.

So, if you’re going to get defensive, at least do it with somebody who deserves it, instead of getting your panties in a twist over somebody who’s just trying to improve the game that he loves playing.

I wasn’t trying to lump you. I was pointing out that you merely, in that one instance, were coming off as saying that anyone who takes the time to say “Thanks, I love it!” without pointing out an issue is being a fanboy. And I specifically tried to not specify you in the rant that followed, because it wasn’t about you. If you asked me to think up something I want fixed, I could probably give you 3 answers easily. But I choose not to because many people here have done a fantastic job at pointing out these issues…and directly insulting ANet employees while doing it. Not they do for a fact feel insulted, but there are definitely things being thrown around that are not acceptable to say to someone trying to entertain you. And not that everyone does it. It’s a relatively small amount, but they stick out in my head more.

And yes, I will give you that those are very civil, thoughtful answers.

As I said, I don’t care if somebody disagrees with me. What I care about is when somebody says that all people who have criticisms should just shut up and bask in the glory of the developers’ work, which is obviously a gift from god that we should all be thankful for.

Ok, that was a bit hyperbolic, but you understand where I’m coming from.

Sorry to say this to all of you but there is not one thing in this game that is not an improvement from Guild Wars. Enjoy what you have been given for goodness sake. Nothing is perfect however the team at Anet have nearly done that. You are experiencing their work their hearts and souls and creativity went into this. You all are just criticizing and nitpicking until they feel so disheartened they change things that were fine. So please stop. Anet the worlds you have created both in GW2 and Gw1 have enchanted me since I was 12 I now am an adult and I can say that I applaud you all for your skill and artistry. Thank You!

So sorry, never played GW1.

You can squee and fanboy all you’d like, and I applaud the effort that’s gone into this game (there is plenty to like, which is why I’m still playing), but I’m not going to keep my opinions to myself on what needs improvement. So, you can plug your ears and go, “LALALALALA” while I actually try to help Anet improve their game, for the benefit of everyone.

Obviously not for the benefit of everyone if someone obviously expresses an opinion other than your own. Go ahead – give your opinions. No one’s stopping you. But you know what? I’m of the opinion that someone who has played GW1 does have a little more room to talk than you do.

Since this game is not, in fact, the first Guild Wars game, it should be taken on its own merits (and demerits, as the case may be). Which means that any experience in the first game is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

Why are there multiple currencies?

Greyfeld.7104

If you completed it then you already know you could beat it so repeating is just redundant.

So you want to run a dungeon once, get the gear, and be done? Wow.

“You got from level 1-2, you already know you could do it so repeating is just redundant.”

“You got your crafting to level 2, you already know you could do it so repeating is just redundant.”

“You killed someone in PVP, you already know you could do it so repeating is just redundant.”

Hopefully you realize how ridiculous that entire argument sounds.

I remember playing pencil and paper D and D and taking multiple weekends to finish a dungeon just to get whatever amazing thing was in the chest at the end.

Dungeons in video games are fast-food copies of the reason people love dungeons. So let’s not be too hasty to blame/hate for someone saying, “been there done that after one run” because it’s largely true. Doing it over and over again refines technique, it doesn’t necessarily make the dungeon any different or better.

I recognize that it’s a compromise that designers have had to make to adapt to technology and consumer demand for this fast-food alternative, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to run a dungeon once and get a trunk full of loot out of it.

Is there anything wrong with WANTING it? Of course not.

Expecting it? Asinine.

With the “Been there, done that” mentality I could get every single piece of gear available from dungeon rewards in a single night. That’s ridiculous. Expecting that, and expecting ANet to put it in? Downright stupid.

Video games that incorporate an online element are all about retention. GW2 cares about retention less than sub-based games, but they still want/need people to stick around and continue playing the game. If a game becomes a ghost-town, it becomes less inviting to new players, so it doesn’t sell as well. As it stands now, in a few months I’ll still be running dungeons to get the cosmetic gear I most desire. I personally see nothing wrong with that.

There is nothing wrong with that, but expecting anet to put in fun things to do between getting the awesomesauce isn’t stupid at all.

So, let’s just say you’re correct. You could get every piece of gear in a single night. That’s one extreme.

Here’s the other: there is no possible way to get even ONE piece of gear in a single night. And to get all of the piece of gear you have to do the same content something like 50 times.

That’s where we’re at. Extreme number two. An entire night’s play with no in between rewards for the effort.

How do you bridge the gap?

I would bet that in an hour I could list 500 things that COULD be done to make running each dungeon, each time, more rewarding.

I’ll spend 30 seconds, assume that each line below starts with “finish a dungeon or boss encounter within the dungeon”.

Get a buff that turns you into a pirate ghost until you choose to click it off.
Get a random delivery of crafting materials from the ether.
Get a minipet.
Get a balloon animal sword filled with poison gas.
Get one of a random selection of food items that only come from that dungeon.
Get a “be a mob” token that allows you to take over a random mob somewhere in the world and control it.

I’ll stop there. Sure, none of this stuff is in game already, but it could have been. Along with hundreds of other “allong the way” incentives. Titles, town clothes, show weapons, more gold per run (never going to happen), a pet that follows you that is the same model as the dungeon boss and calls you, “My Lord” for your 10th victory.

The options are endless. Why they don’t exist is a mystery.

I agree with this, and I think the other poster does as well. It should be noted that the previous discussion up to this point smacked of, “I want my rewards, and I want them NOW!!” which sounds a hell of a lot different than, “Let’s add more fun and aesthetic rewards that people can collect while they’re doing something they’re going to do anyway!”

it aint easy for groups to coordinate right now, and the game doesnt encourage that.

its an all out zerg fest on most champions.

im ok with it, because the game is more “action” than “tactic”.
but anet can definitely improve was for players to play together.
as this will be the way to make the game last.

as of now, playing together feels like playing with npcs.
nobody have the time to type things to do/plans/call outs.

i dont have a solution, but it definitely should be a point of focus for the creative gameplay designers.

lol I dunno about that, I’ve seen some callouts during Fire Elemental in Metrica Province. I’ve even done some myself. But nobody listens. That’s a player problem, not a development problem.

Hell, a couple days ago, I said, “We need to kill off the little elementals first, that’s why we keep dying!” and the only response I got was, “Nah, they’re just gonna respawn again.” And the deaths continued.

It’s going to take a while for people to realize that you can’t just zerg everything down (and a lot of the champion/DE fights don’t do much to discourage it, either), but I’m sure we’ll get there eventually.

Making money in this game is getting harder and harder with all of these “no botting” patches that lower rewards for events completed consecutively. I have a level 80 and I had to sell almost all of my crafting supplies just to get the level 60 book. That is the most money I have ever had.

How did you make 8g without buying 50 dollars worth of gems?

I had 3.5g sitting in my bank at level 60 (after spending almost 5g on unlocking character slots), I don’t know how you can not have at least 2g by level 80.

Just out of curiosity, what makes a dialogue bad? English is not my first language but I am good enough to understand the stuff being said. Aside from that, I have not encountered any dialogue that I thought was bad. I listen to a conversation, when it’s done I move on with the related story/event. Not once have I gone “OMG that was terible!”

Maybe someone could show me an example of a bad dialogue in game?

It’s about reading/hearing a conversation between two people and being able to believe that these two characters could actually exist in the real world. The tone most cutscene dialogue takes is very hard to take seriously, because it sounds stilted and fake. It sounds more like two people reading a script for the first time, rather than two people having an actual conversation.

And that sort of thing usually boils down to how the script is written. The words chosen, their inflection, that sort of thing.

There’s more to good fiction than just telling the reader about events that happen.

Thanks, I guess I’m probably just not listening enough to English speakers in a conversation to come to a conclusion like that. Reading is my forte, but not listening or speaking. But even then, I still don’t think it’s as terrible as people make it out to be.

As somebody who watches a lot of subbed anime, I understand where you’re coming from. When you’re not listening to your native language, it can be hard to discern the nuances of the dialogue.

It should be noted that the story itself isn’t horrible, as far as it goes. It’s the way it’s written that’s horrible. It’s the difference between idea and application.

Off the top of my head, one quest that comes to mine is the one where you have to rescue the researchers, after establishing Fort Trinity.

Barring the “stuck NPCs” issue, I ran into a lot of waves during this quest that would beeline straight to my ranger, despite having 3+ other characters that the mobs can attack. Every single pull during the search for the researchers devolved into a Benny Hilly impersonation, as I circle-strafed in the small branching intersections, spamming my traps and axe skills.

It wasn’t quite as bad once I got all the researchers and Trahearne’s flesh golems, but even with a dozen or so other targets, I still had 2-3 mobs breaking off to attack me on each wave. Granted, this wasn’t nearly as difficult to handle, but I’m not sure that it should take over a dozen targets to whittle the oncoming wave down to something manageable.

Is speedrunning dungeons an exploit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Greyfeld.7104

I’m not exactly sure what methods are being used to “exploit”, but speed running because mobs can be skipped is an exploit now? Yeah, I get that it’s not supposed to be skipped, but if the game allows for it, then how is it bannable?

If it was an oversight, then it’s on ArenaNet to get it fixed if they don’t agree with skipping over content in dungeons. Until then, it’s an open world, and if we find multiple paths that make our lives easier, of course we’re going to take them.

Are you self-righteous kittens going to lie and tell me you never once used the flute in Super Mario Bros 3 too?!

P.S. No, I did not type any profanity. I’ve fully embraced the kitten at this point.

It’s not a matter of simply walking around the edge of the room because the mobs’ aggro range doesn’t reach that far. We’re talking about purposely bugging mobs, and bypassing entire sections of the dungeon.

Is speedrunning dungeons an exploit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Greyfeld.7104

So making money is an exploit, explorable should cost more in repair costs than you get as a reward.

Don’t even try to make money for max-stat gear unless you plan on grinding for months, you’re meant to always have terrible non-max gear unless you abuse the trading post.

Conversely, making money by skipping content and intentionally bugging mobs is an exploit, and people who believe this to be unfair are lucky they didn’t get banned in the process of patching it up.

Look at it this way: If the bugged mobs were actually hurting your progress through the dungeon, you would have reported them. The fact that bugging them helped you make more money suddenly justified leaving them the way they were? That’s why it’s an exploit.

The OP is flawed and fallacious. I don’t have to be a master chef to know when something tastes bad. I don’t have to be a professional film critic to know what I don’t like about a movie.

And I don’t need to be a writer to know when dialogue sucks.

There are a handful of reasons why the writing in this game needs an overhaul (there are a lot of good pieces of dialogue, but there are also a lot of very very bad pieces of dialogue), and while I may or may not be able to write something better than the writers for this game, that has absolutely no bearing on whether or not the writing it actually good.

You can still group up to do stories, and if there was no sidekicking:
- A L1 character and a L80 could steamroll all of the story steps, giving the L1 a large amount of XP and items
- Even solo, the lower level story steps would be totally trivialized, and one-hitting the “big bad” villains would feel pretty laughable

I don’t see why either of these are a problem.

Putting aside the fact that you’d have a level 1 having to make it alive through hostile terrain much higher level than him for many of the story arcs (unlikely), fast level progression just doesn’t feel that unbalanced to me. You’re not getting any unfair advantage over any other player in the game. And who the hell is going to go through this sort of pain in the butt to powerlevel somebody?

The trivialization of story content is a larger concern, but not by much. The NPCs already go out of their way to fawn all over you and tell you how amazing and heroic you are. The very least they can do is make it easier to feel heroic, rather than dying over and over again, then having to endure the hero worship that suddenly seems far more sarcastic than originally intended.

i think most if not ALL people complaining about lack of “endgame” are the no-lifers who play too much.
and no game right now can deal with them.
i say they can quit.
come back later, the door will always be open.

i have pity for them.
they really are the ones hurting themselves more.
and then saying the problem is the game? after like 300h in 3 weeks.

anyway.
GW2 is amazing, huge, and perfectly fine for a gamer who will spend 15h a week in the game. (thats normal, right?)

Such a cop out… This game should have been designed AND released with ALL of its customers in mind. This includes the “no lifers”. Everyone knew that people were going to rush to 80. Everyone knew there was going to be people competing for world firsts.

You can’t say that the hardcore community is too small to worry about either…its a rather large portion of the customer base…far to big to ignore and be successful.

Im guessing you aren’t at level cap and don’t see how truly broken and under developed/polished this game is.

Also …no one cares if you play 1 hour or 100 hours a week. They care about how much they play. A successful MMO will target all playstyles and 80 is very…very easy to get.

I have many, many hours invested into the game split between two characters, amongst the different realms of play (WvWvW, SPVP, PVE, Exploration) and I have not hit 80 yet on any character.

I haven’t bought a cultural item. I haven’t investigated Order armor yet. I haven’t gotten an exotic. I haven’t played with the Mystic Forge outside of SPVP. I haven’t set foot in most of the dungeons.

I have maybe 39% world completion?

Yeah, I don’t understand how these people do it. I literally have no life, and spend 4-10 hours a day on GW2, and my highest character is level 71. I’ve only done one storymode dungeon, and I have something like 30% world completion.

Being in my late 20’s, I grew up on video games as they originated (Or, at least fairly close to how they originated.) Mario and other NES games did not have a “carrot on the end of the stick.” The reward you got for playing the game was the enjoyment you got out of playing the game itself.

Actually, Mario DOES apply a carrot. The unlocking of levels and the goal of defeating the game is the carrot applied by Mario games (and, in fact, most single-player video games).

This is called “progression.”

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with people who demand a carrot in their MMOs. I definitely disagree with the idea that a gear treadmill needs to be in place, but that’s only quibbling over the type of carrot to be employed.

Personally, I’m of a mind that the best progression at end-game is player-made progression. That’s also why I believe that the best MMOs are games that meld the themepark story and gameplay seamlessly with sandbox freedom.

I also believe that this game is only a couple weeks old, and has plenty of time to grow into something bigger than it currently is. And I’m not paying a subscription fee anyway, so I have all the time in the world to wait and see if it pans out.

The feedback on this post is probably good for ANet to take in to account, however in my Sylvari storyline I’ve been confronted with plenty of moral ambiguity and to top it off, I like and hate some of the characters. So, to me, the story has been very fulfilling and amazing. Perhaps those that think otherwise aren’t playing a race or making choices in character creation or during the story that match their personalities or preferences.

It’s not just about moral ambiguity (Although this lacks quite a lot as well; when you get a choice, it’s usually either attack group A, or attack group B, and neither decision is presented as being morally questionable, since all enemies are Capital-E Evil. Some of them should really come with a mustache they can twirl.), it’s mostly about having no say-so in your character’s personality development.

I recently created an Asuran Thief. My vision for this character’s personality was an introvert who got his dirty work done in the shadows. A little sleight of hand and a lot of humility belying his ability to be one of the biggest movers and shakers in the technological world.

Instead, I get the same brash, loud, boakittenl, vengeful Asuran that every other player has.

There is only one character personality for each racial storyline, and no matter which branch you choose during character creation, there’s nothing you can do to change it. That’s what the major problem is, concerning choice in the personal story.

The personal story is bad and it makes me feel bad.

Necromancy is about raising the dead and binding them to your will. All those risen attacks you had to fend off were because Zhatian willed the armies to attack.

Which I find amusing, because nobody seems to mind when 1/8 of the “heroes” running around are also necromancers. You’d think there’d be some sort of club or cult running around, committing hate crimes against necromancers, in a misguided attempt to “purge the world of Zhaitan’s minions.” But nope, there’s no misunderstandings or any semblance of bigotry in the world, so everybody’s cool with it.

There’s already a long thread that I started a few days ago about the horrendous dialogue in the game, that you can read here, but the OP brings up another aspect of the personal story that really needs to be looked at.

The fact is, quite a number of the plot lines that intersect later in the story only make sense if you played a certain race. Most notably, Trahearne for the Sylvari. I know that this would require more work, but if the story is going to intersect like that, the other races need some sort of background and introduction to the NPC, instead of just having them dumped in their character’s lap, and told, “This NPC is more important than you, so you’re compelled to follow orders and do exactly what he says.” It’s too abrupt, and the lack of buildup is jarring, if not completely off-putting.

Also, is it so much to ask that we get a set of characters that has a longer continuity than 2-3 cutscenes?

Also, I will never forget (or forgive) the male Sylvari player pronouncing “sword” as “schword”.

Schword.

Maybe he was trying to say Schwartz. As in, “Use the Schwartz.” xD

Power builds for a thief newbie

I enjoy Dual Daggers for the stealth/misdirection playstyle, but I don’t like that the weapons seem to be geared toward condition damage.

So, I’ve been trying to figure out the best approach if I want to make a Power build. I tried Sword/Dagger and didn’t really care for it (too much of the damage relies on auto attack, so it’s hard to maintain a stealth/misdirection type of combat style).

How well does Dagger/Pistol perform? I know the 3 skill is a blind, and 4 is a very very short daze, but I’m not sure how well it’ll hold up whenever I end up fighting more than 1 mob at a time.

Utility and other weapon suggestions are encouraged as well, as long as you give your reasoning for them!

Hopping servers to farm nodes you wouldn’t otherwise have access to creates a surplus of materials on the market, driving up supply in relation to demand. There’s already enough problems with items selling for crap-all on the TP, without artificially deflating the prices by flooding the market.

I’m not going to say that the OP is at fault or not, because there is obviously conflicting statements from two different Anet employees.

However, this is a textbook expoit; using the system in a way that wasn’t intended in order to gain a financial advantage. It may not be as simple as the Karma bug was, but it’s still unintended.

Althought, it seems to me like this is something that should have been patched up before the game even went live. With WvWvW a prominent source of pvp, the potential for abuse is ridiculous without some sort of limitation or cooldown period. The inclusion of such a restriction would have taken care of this exploit as well.

I put a post up about this before, but it didn’t get any responses before it was buried several pages back, so here I am again, as the problem persists.

This happens at any time during the game, where everything on the screen will just hang for a half second, then the graphics will speed up to catch up to the server.

Since I play a shortbow ranger, this is especially noticeable in combat, where I can see my character just stand there for a while, then all the sudden there’s a flash of numbers all grouped together above the target the server has had me firing at. This makes it especially difficult to position during combat, and dodge telegraphed attacks.

Is this a problem server-side, or should I be looking for problems with my internet connections?

This isn’t about ‘who will pay more’.

We paid for the game already.

I’m getting kind of tired of the people who always see dollar signs or profit in every little thing. Simply put, there is a whole palette of colors to shade your armor with, and they put a small pile of them in the game as dyes you could ‘earn’ by finding or purchasing.

The fact that they ‘also’ sell them in the Real Life money store should not mean they all of a sudden become something you have to purchase for every single character you make.

As far as I’m concerned, I’d rather quit the game and take my money elsewhere if they are going to become like the other game stores that try and nickel and dime every feature of a game.

I have quit games for less, and went and funded others, because they refused to listen to what the players want.

Then feel free to quit.

This game has no subscription fee. They have to make up their loss of income somewhere. If they’re not going to make it on aesthetic items, then where the hell do you expect them to make it?

Have you tried different traits or maybe even different weapon combinations? When I was dieing a lot, a weapon change and a visit to the trait page was needed. Usually had no problems whatsoever and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the challenge.

I don’t know about other players, but I don’t personally have any problems soloing the story missions. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve died in the personal story, and my ranger is about to ding 70.

But the way I have to approach the fights is ridiculous. If you saw how I had to do it, you’d laugh your kitten off, while you heard the Benny Hill chase music running through your head.

Having to abuse AI to win means the design team did something wrong, somewhere. That’s all I’m saying.

There you go right there.

Ranger.

I have a friend who has a ranger and has only had problems with two missions. I imagine my engineer will not have the problems I am having with it and other characters once I get the trait that makes turrets take 30% less damage and drop a thumper down.

I had to wait until level 12 and I had more utility slots and skills along with better armor to be able to do my level 8 Human street rat mission with my mesmer.

I’m not really sure I understand what you’re implying. Having a half dozen mobs beat on you is no less fatal as a ranger than as a cloth-wearer. My pet didn’t take any aggro. I’m a condition-based shortbow user, so having the mobs chasing me meant I was plinking away with my pitiful shortbow damage, rather than getting my conditions up and ticking.

Hell, elementalists have more mobility options than rangers do, depending on their weapon choice.

I still had to run around in circles to keep from getting my face beat in. I ended up having to switch to Axe/Torch so that I could hit more than one enemy at a time to speed up the process.

Even if it were just as a cash shop thing, it would be nice. On my necromancer, I threw away her starting clothes, only later realizing that they were cuter than any of the garbage she was going to have to run around in for the next 20 levels.

But lets be honest, shouldn’t my character be slightly better than someone who did not take the time to level up to 80?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: sPVP is built to emphasize skill, not gear. There are plenty of games that grant players an edge based on the gear they’ve acquired through hours upon hours of gameplay. This is not one of those games.

I don’t mind having to “show a little skill” in getting my flanking position. My problem is the frequency with which I find the mobs coming straight for me, forcing me to do the circle-strafe thing right in the middle of melee to get my bleeds ticking.

Doing it once in a while is fine, and expected, because things are going to attack you. Having to do it literally every other fight just becomes annoying, monotonous, and frustrating.

For Gods sake... I spend ages killing zombies with a gorrilion health, followed by useless people and it bugs out!!! Stop wasting my time!

The moderator already requested the OP keep his post polite. You can be frustrated all you want, as long as you remain civil.

On topic, I noticed my NPCs not moving while I was in the cave as well, but I did a lap around a nearby loop in the cave, and most of the NPCs managed to unstick themselves. Had no problem with finishing the mission once Trahearne got to the mouth of the cave.

The problem with the personal story isn’t that the fights are exceptionally hard. It’s that AI behavior sucks. NPCs do jack-all to help, and enemy mobs make a beeline for the player. Every. Single. Time.

I’ve managed to get through most of my story quests without dying on my ranger, but I’ve had to resort to circle-strafing while a huge pack of mobs follows along behind me for minutes at a time, while I whittle them down one by one, the NPCs looking on stupidly at the spectacle.

Salvaging bugged?

I’ve completed the salvaging achievement, and I’ve gotten the followup salvage achievement twice (just to illustrate how much I’ve salvaged).

Of all those salvages, I’ve gotten a non-white crafting material once. It was a piece of jewelry I salvaged, and I got a gem off of it.

I’ve had zero other “rarer” crafting material drops from salvaging.
