Montly’s is called Montly’s because a guy named Montly owns the bar. I didn’t name him but I’d hold it against him personally if he called it Dave’s or Joe’s.

Monthly’s, by comparison, are monthly gated quests while dailies are daily gated quests. Gated content doesn’t care about your feelings. Gated content remains contently gated.

How to improve questing in MMORPGs

OP… the smell of troll is strong with you…

Or… perhaps it could be that… no… it cannot be! The… the MMO gaming genre… THIS is the trolling source… it has trolled so many people for so long that we have come to expect a ridiculous reality… a reality where spiders moo peacefully on the plains, where predators keep awkward distances from each other and feel overwhelmingly pessimistic the longer they have to chase prey. A reality where bandits hide away evenly spaced in a wide open day-lit field or orchard, shifting, turning, walking…. only to catch the glimpse of some green-eyed kitten, greedy for their cutpurse loot, and getting carved a new smile a bit south and a round without so much as a mousefart of personal regret or emotion at all…. A reality where some poor kitten has been standing by his front door for YEARS, trapped perpetually staring deep into the icy abyss of his cruel existence… to be silent until clicked and to direct countless masses of oddly named adventurers out into the nearby area to easily collect readily available materials mere feet away, only to return and be rewarded bags of identically colored boots that jingle with a few lost coppery fragments of his eternally tormented soul. And you salvaged those boots didn’t you. be honest… spent those coppers on a WP transport across a gap that measured a pleasant walks distance away for the sake of convenience, too huh? Brutal.

These folks live a tragic and kittened life, but for only a few silvers a day, we can feed, clothe, educate and rehabilitate these cursed people and help break the cycle of NPC abuse. Please consider the generous weight of your coin or gem donation to be a gift of great altruism and in no way the result of any feelings of guilt for personally damaging these fine people or contributing to their well founded feelings of hopelessness and deep regret for having ever been born. Please send all donations to Guardians legendary fund, which in no way is affiliated with Guardians stripper, booze and petty cash fund, another fine institution and respectable establishment, ever in need of additional funding.

You need a different guild, mate. An awesome group of folks and an active GM that likes to run events makes a lot of this crap more… temporarily forgettable. I mean, its still there, but you feel less inclined to think about it being against you.

Not saying you should leave your friends, but a more active guild with lots more people doing the things you want to makes the game better for those who need this sort of interaction. Find a new home and bring them over too!

Guardian.5142

So, I just killed Zhaitan… my oh my…

I could probably write an entirely new post about this but it has been beaten to death. I was SUPER excited going in to the fight, but MAN, WHAT?! It was… awful. What happened? lol!

Don’t worry, they gave up on the whole personal story thing and are supplementing the living story as a world story that the hero takes part in. Its… never really been tried before and an interesting concept, but ultimately after a while seems lacking when content disappears. Before marrionette there was the whole Krait tower business and before that there was Scarlet’s invasions (happened every hour on the hour and was a massive influx of wealth from all the champs). Before that was… Queen’s Jubilee…? I think they intermixed SAB throughout… and of course the Halloween/Christmas specials as those holidays happened. Scarlett’s invasions (a nerfed and far less profitable encounter now) and a replacement TA dungeon path are some of the only things still in game from back then, I think. It puts value on transient “stick around or you’ll miss something” content. We’ll see later this year if its paid off enough to keep folks or if they have to start changing things up.

As for your own draw to the endgame, you shouldn’t have trouble finding that for yourself. Don’t expect a legendary unless you’re willing to either grind dungeons/mats or play the market (buy low/sell high). Don’t expect anything in the “living story” section of your achievements to stick around past two weeks (hit those metas if you want the prize). Don’t get attached to content of of the living story. If you have Black Lion Scrap tickets, buy new weps as they come out and they’ll be 1 ticket a piece for a short time before going up to 5 (and gaining value on the TP).

You might also try and play the other classes to get an idea of your ideal class, even if its already what you are playing. Warrior is a great all-arounder either way. I personally started with guardian, playing through just about everything up to 40 and found my favorite gameplay to be the mesmer (which is amazingly fun at the end game). Try the different races to see what animations/forms/voices work best for you. I started a tiny Asura and ended up the shortest Norn (bigger and broader (and manlier) base than human male, but doesn’t feel fracking gigantic slowmo stomping around). Keep in mind you can be a gigantic Charr ele or thief if you want, your great size not keeping you from playing a sneaky or finger wiggler type class like in other games (imagine a tauren rogue :P) Most of all, keep it light and have fun.

The problems lies in teenagers playing this game.
Look around. 50% of game population runs human female.

Why? Do humans have good racials?
Nope.
They play human females because of boobs, that’s why.
And that’s why most popular sets are those which reveal everything. People like boobs-revealing skimpy armors, they buy them.
So ANet provides it.

Actually, not sure if that’s so much a horny teenage boy thing… Boobs are pretty much OP across the board. Some women like the option of being really kitten ed sexy… I think it just gets a bit old after a bit when its over played. Everyone could do with more… attractive sets that compliment both a woman’s and a man’s body towards both practical and decorative applications.

I actually liked the ending. Remember, regardless of whether is a TV-show, a movie or a video game, its a sci-fi first. Even bad sci-fi is actually still kinda good sci-fi. Besides, they could have just ended it at the final clutch point and rolled credits… and it would have still been a pretty good sci-fi, just a whole lot more ironic.

Different strokes I guess..

Guardian.5142

I am starting to have a different point of view completely as to where the real problem lies. You and I were looking at the symptoms, not the cause. Gold and Gems aren’t the problem here. Lets do some comparative research…

If this was WoW on its second year, we’d be gearing up to tackle the “final boss” of this expansion after having raided through 2 or 3 additional tiers of content to get here. I feel like instead of raids that challenge us to work together in order to see content, that we’re more or less being “walked” through the content, with lots of hand holding and conciliation prizes, group effort and completion awards.

Imagine if instead of raid content and new armor sets, Blizzard walked you through each raid dungeon where you fought sometimes personal and sometimes 5 man instanced content thats… sometimes challenging… when you don’t cheat and check out Dulfy… All of those classic Naxxramus fights… the boss mechanics of Black Temple… the smorgusborg that was the Frozen Throne…. All hand held… with a few cute trinkets, achievements and zerg events to participate in that occur steadily on the hour? Then, after the show’s over, it goes away, like it was never there. Sure the scenery might have changed, but the game should have had a permanent add, not an add, then subtract… that’s just breaking even. new folks won’t even be able to tell the difference.

By the same measure as other MMOs, we should have double the number of 5 man dungeons at this point in the game (since there’s no raids), each with their own distinctive gear sets like the other current dungeons. And the dungeons should be permanent, regardless of how the story moves on. If you can kill Zaitaan over and over, you should be able to do the same with any added content. The dungeons should be where the action of the story unfolds even if you do “story parts” out and about. Hell, be real with us even by calling them Chapter 2 dungeons or Chapter 4 dungeons on where they are in the story. If there aren’t going to be “raids” in this game and hey, I’m not really that broken up about that, 5 mans aren’t that bad, just package the content up into repeatable 5 man dungeons and even story relevant zones and then KEEP THEM AROUND! Make a few dungeons easymode for speed runs and a few hard for achievers and lets call it even… THAT is what horizontal progression is all the kitten about!

Then, you can add all the freaking convenience junk you want to into the gem store and we don’t feel completely butt-kittened when you toy with our emotions by adding an item to the gemstore that gives +20% chance for a free kitten every time we mine a bit of copper. I’m not trying to be unreasonable here, but if your gemstore only model doesn’t support the kind of content that this market demands of its companies, the next best thing that DOES come close in mechanics and quality will sweep the rest of us stubborn kittens out of here.

…because it will, if we don’t lose patience first….

That being said, OoW is like the Human CT3. I think the girls would look pretty good in the guy versions. hell, I think I might even be tempted to roll a gigantic scarred norn male warrior just to xmute on a frilly white wedding dress (were it one day available and gender neutral). Nothing spells certain doom like the heavy charge of the biggest, ugliest norn woman you’ve ever seen after interrupting her wedding day. I often run around in mixed sets, I just wear whatever drops for me pretty often! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m pretty fond of my Igraine’s current combo, though:

Head: invisible
Shoulders: invisible
Hands: invisible (Profane would look nice, or Orchid)
Coat: Masquerade (picture 1) OR Tactical (picture 2)
Pants: Profane (Gem Store)
Feet: Dryad (Sylvari cultural T3)

I wanted something without skirts, was the original inspiration. I’d probably hate this on any of my human characters, but it seems to work on Igraine quite nicely.

A lot of good styles here, but wanted to give props to you for originality. I agree, we could do with less skirts and ballgowns. This has kind of a super hero feel to it. Like you said, it probably would look out of place on a human… unless you went full dark skin/silver hair and made the armor colors light/complimenting. Something more “X-men” like and not just a corny halloween outfit.

I would expect an AoE confuse on f2 and some kind of ‘charge’ attack like the sharks, but probably delivering vulnerability or weakness instead of a bleed.

The most important thing (opinions)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guardian.5142

Guardian.5142

Player customization.
Broad topic, I know, but probably most of what keeps me in the game. I love making my character into MY character, not just the character Anet thinks I should I want.

Skills -

- More weapons unlocked for more classes. Warriors using scepters like cattle prods. Mesmers throwing shiny pink daggers and dueling pistols. Thieves committing arson with their torches. Rangers using other ranged weapons, like… uh…rifles? Guardians with Axes, for when that nasty psychotic break kicks in. Necros that use MH focus to summon/coordinate scary ‘paranormal activity’ ghost attacks. Elementists with fluffy possessed stuffed animals that can call down the Thundaga. Lastly, more engineer kits, including a shoulder mounted bazooka and BFG kit, transportation kits to rival secret of mana’s personal cannon transporter (with the animation from the disks from tequatl) AND to give engies the ability to mesmer portal…. OH… and a flame thrower kit that gasp might actually be seriously considered part of the PvE meta without being laughed at by the Pryo from TF2. Seriously, I hate that kitten…

- A brand new line of “PvE only skills” open to all races/classes that give baseline dungeon utility skills to all classes. They can’t be great, but they can get you by in a pinch and help promote the whole “bring the player, not the class” ideal. Stuff like really short smoke bombs, a minor reflection field, maybe a GTFO card or two to play in a pinch with a longer CD.

- Instead of using skill points or sold/collected drops, a personal story quest ending with your character finding a hidden trove of skills or an item that imparts the memories (skills) of characters from GW1 would be fun.

Aesthetics -

- more varied options for great gear looks. Allowing for more “cross tier” looks like armored looking medium or lighter looking plate. Each tier having a “normal” or simple shirt, pants, robe and trench. More aesthetically pleasing sets that mix and match well together (more middle ground with supporting textures in between the starkly different sets). More sleek leather sets like assassins, human special and Krytan and avoid any more trench sets.

- Add glowing effects, aura effects, footfalls and particle effects through invisible back pieces.

- Smoother and more realistic clothing/hair physics?

Voices/personalities -

- If I create a dark and tormented human necro, I’d really like to be able to customize their voice to sound… like a dark and tormented human necro. When I make an older veteran looking character that has been through hell and back, I like to hear a little grizzle in their fo-kitten, if you feel me. Maybe make it an option to turn off the personal story when choosing new voices to “preserve the sanctity of continuity” if you need to, but I kinda want me an asura that sounds like a charr… because why the kitten not? I feel like, aside from the personal story, which after a few times, gets kinda old anyways, the only real reason not to add more voice options is the cost of good voice acting. /shrug

With the LS effectively picking up where the PS left off and given your character has no lines to speak, they wouldn’t have much to lose… unless they really did try and continue the PS later on…

Yep a thief and an elementalist are gonna be a walk on a blade’s edge in PvE. I like that challange. Ok it’s not superhard or anything but we are still talking about the two squishiest classes… sad thing is, we started from rangers.

p.s.: I get your sarcasm, and its funny. I did not use the proper wording for discribing my motivations, and you implied that quite well.

thief sword + pistol allows a thief to face tank albiet slowly. I kinda wish ANET allowed rangers to do at range what thieves can do close up (after the “ranged tax” saps some dps)

"Preparing to Have Fun..."

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guardian.5142

I get this, but I don’t see how they would fix it, besides adding more single player content.

As long as anything requires more than just you, there will be folks waiting for others to join or for an event to start. The overflows constitute a technical limitation and may as well be a “raid size” max that takes over a zone during the fights. I kinda wish you could have two types of overflows, one for people playing through the content (lower levels) and one for specific event raid groups, then make the different overflows selectable instead of decided for us.

As for what to do while waiting, I spent my time completing the map, farming mats (iron and silver are nice right now), and more or less trying to make myself useful in between bouts. You get so little loot for time spent (collecting key parts for an eventual payout of phat lewts) that after the first few kills and filling out the meta, I’ll probably stick to other things until the next update.

I guess with stuff like this, its just about pacing yourself, looking for opportunities to focus your time towards other things when you are waiting. Then try not to force yourself to do those events past a certain point. Its like, is the reward worth it? ok, do it until you get the reward and then stop. :P

Only time I work against this idea is like back when scarlet invasions were a cash cow and I was able to make hundreds of gold in a few weeks by hitting those things every hour. The current “key collection” isn’t tremendously inspiring towards that end, but has some good rewards. Unless there’s something more compelling than gold to be made, I’ll probably go back to dungeons/farming at my own pace.

Apalling Items: Metabolic Primer and Nodes

I expect to see more nodes in the home instance as they are trying to find reasons to get players to visit them more often. I view my home instance in GW2 similarly to my HoM from GW1.

If they REALLY wanted us in the home instance more they’d have spent alot more time developing player housing.

You pass how many houses of the ‘cardboard cut-out’ variety through the home instance. It wouldn’t kill them to make one of them “yours”. The reason they haven’t is that they haven’t developed a way to make good money off of it and there’s no crafting support yet. There’s no furniture crafting, taxidermy, etc in game to support it although.. /sigh… I guess I could accept killing a random bat and it dropping a rare “couch”.

as for the OP- look, I realize you are voicing an opinion and you have every right to. Enough people complain and Anet rethinks some things and redesigns others. At this point though, I think we can all agree that we place different priorities and values on both in game and RL money. If I weren’t married and could work another job, just for this game, I probably would, with the bonus that when this game no longer holds my interest, I can use the RL money for other things too.

I honestly can’t say the gem prices fit into my own paradigm of what I’m willing to spend on, both RL money and in game gold. I watch these items as they pass by and sometimes wave, pondering wistfully of what might have been. Or not. Let those willing to spend more money do what Anet allows them to. Its not pay to win until the only way your are competitive requires a cash purchase, so I think we’re pretty safe here.

I do this on all my new characters, because even if I hit 80 focusing just on map completion, I still need the WPs for later on when doing guild or other things in game.

After that, if you still aren’t 80, you can easily do map completion of the lower level maps to bring you up the rest of the way. Just remember to do yourself a favor and spec talents that support swiftness, fall damage negation and escape.

Map completion on its own takes you most of the way to 80 by Timberline or Maelstrom if you are doing them in order from lowest to highest level. Use food xp buffs and mix in some personal story for a boost.

I like how this thread not only shows the many different ways to enjoy and order the train, it acts much like the train /map chat. Mostly just good folks looking for a bit of easy loot for a bit, until drama ensues when someone ninjas a spawn under the guise of “playing how they want” or “playing the way ANet wants”.

New people, learn well from this thread what the QD train is all about! Good ole grindy repetition interspersed with flares of “kitten you kittens for killing oak!” and “I’m special because I can kitten ALL of you kitten people in the kittens by just kittening your train stops!” and “Kitten you, selfish kittens not caring about the needs of the many over the needs of the few!” and “Can’t you go kitten a kitten champ in another zone..” and then there’s always that one guy that may or may not be high that says something about wishing people still did frostgorge train, cuz its better… and being “hungry as kitten”

PULEAAAAASE make a phoenix medium/heavy skin available! Not fair that armor sets are only available for different professions! If you’re going to make one style make it available for all professions. Please!

I second this for all TP skins.

As long as it doesn’t get to the point where LFG turns into a “pay us 5G a piece and won’t kick you”, its probably ok.

Sometimes I miss vertical progression… I would just save my money, wait for the xpac and solo it at level 90 :P.

snip

I have a feeling I’m not explaining it very well – maybe someone else can help.

Actually, I think you did just fine. I played WoW for 6 years or so and never saw much irregularity like you used in the Diablo refererence. There were some rings, but, if you wanted X named purple sword, it was the same sword. The only thing that changed was vertical progression and MUCH later on the transmog stuff. Enchantments are just runes and sigils.

I get what you are saying about the differences between the TP and the AH, but I really can’t help but wonder if a TP works for mats/parts/bulk items and an AH works better for equipment and skins. I mean, Eternity used to be 2k. Now its over 3k and the other ones keep on rising. The game has actually seen nerfs towards farming mats, so what else could possibly be pushing up endgame prices? People being forced to grind or play the TP for what they want? The value gained from flipping has to come from somewhere, right?

Thank you, everyone, for the explanations. You know, I just had a thought. If precursors were bought from a vendor for 500G or required exalted reputation from two months worth of dailies, I’d probably consider it a worthy goal to hit over time. If you had a much better chance from the completion chests of dungeons or a Teq run to get one, I’d be playing the content with the hope that one day something would drop for me. Even paying 500G to a player who got really lucky from kicking a baby skritt wouldn’t really be all that bad.

Its the fact that the people in this game are allowed to avoid all playable content, sit in Div reach or Ebon and exploit the market at every turn, causing prices for everything to be inflated and moving the goalposts ever away from the casual gamers…

It just hurts my feelings.

Seriously, you don’t let human nature dictate anything you want to stay nice and that includes the economy. You let human nature control things when you want dirty, underhanded exploitation and a persons value (or maybe just their gaming experience in this case) is turned into dollar signs. That… might also be part of the problem here. :P

Thank you for your answer. Can you clarify the difference between a commodity exchange and an auction house?

Commodity exchanges have standardized lots – there are no unique and special items as you would find in an auction. Every Carrion Short Bow on the TP is exactly the same as every other Carrion Short Bow, so only the price matters when deciding which one to buy.

In the Diablo 3 auction house, for example, every item of the same type, rarity, and level can have different stats, which makes it a lot more difficult to arrive at a price consensus. That’s why allowing time limited bidding makes the most sense in games with those kind of item systems. It’s a way to gather information on the value of an item that can’t be directly compared to an item that has sold before.

OK, I get that, but then wouldn’t WoW’s auction house be really a commodity market. And I think Aions, SWTORs… They all work because you break out individual sales as objects and stackable items have “price per unit”, so there’s a common ground in uneven stacks. GW2 TP just combines all of one type of item into a long thread of items set at reducing prices for greater supply and increasing prices for greater demand…. right?

Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.

Sakkats.

To make my lightning elementalist feel more like Raiden.

Oh and unless there’s a flying expansion, lets do with fewer wings. Much as I like the ones you’ve put in game, the flapping in place just gets old…and makes me miss Aion’s flying system. (jumping off a high area and gliding down is friggin amazing and if you want to give the wings that capacity, it would look a lot cooler than currently, where my wings flap helplessly whilest I plummet to my doom).

Firstly, I don’t agree with your specific stance, but I appreciate the intelligence you’ve used in communicating your point of view. I’ll warn you, I’m clearly with the “misinformed philosopher types, who view economics through a very limited lens that prevents them from seeing how bad their ideas are.”

It is with respect, I’d like to ask you specifically, why you believe a X day timer on all TP sell orders would be a “bad idea” in this game? The intention is to add a time factor as a top down pressure to move goods through the TP to their intended parties and to curb “player influence” at the top end of the market to avoid having to pay the “tax” to relist their item(s).

It works for most all MMOs who use auction houses… and Ebay. Which is… sort of like the TP, right?

Its probably academic at this point. JS has taken a strong stance behind the TP as it is and seems to want the intended outcome of the current model. Months of grinding does keep players logging in to accomplish a goal and probably helps gem sales too. I’m asking more for clarity rather than accomplishing anything productive.

Firstly, the Trading Post is not an auction house, it is a commodity exchange so it operates differently.

That being said, the biggest reason to avoid time limits is that slow moving items would never get listed. Why would I risk paying the listing fee multiple times for something that may take a LONG time to eventually sell? That hurts me, the guy who got a lucky drop and you, the guy who wants that item that no one is willing to risk listing.

In order for time limits to be a viable option, we’d have to break the market into two exchanges. Keep the current commodity market where you can buy things that stack the same as it is now, then add a second transaction medium that functions like an auction house that only sells items that do not stack (gear, skins, etc.). In the AH, there would be no fee for listing your item, but the fee that happens at the time of the transaction would be increased to 15% (to ensure the sink is in effect in full force).

Thank you for your answer. Can you clarify the difference between a commodity exchange and an auction house? You aren’t trading wood for oil here. I think what you are saying is that the way the TP is programmed is geared towards players using it as a commodity market… which follows that the first 100 players put something on at 20c and the next 100 put something on a 19c, with only 50 selling that week 150 would have to relist… and I agree with you that this wouldn’t work well in situations where thousands of items are involved and we’d be relisting constantly with little chance to sell unless many folks just happened to be buying at that time.

I think you have something there with splitting the markets out though. Actually keeping the commodities market and then having an equipment market for any non-stackable items might work. Then you could impose a timer to keep folks from buying everything up and then setting a higher market precedent in order to corner/control the market. Well, it would be harder to anyhow As long as there are rare anythings that cannot be reliably gotten other ways, prices may remain higher.

See, from my point of view, saying the price is regulated by what others are willing to pay is a cop out, much like saying the only reason you aren’t dead right now is because there are too many reasons for the other people out there not to kill you. Or like the only reason you have any money to spend at all is because someone out there hasn’t figured out a way to part you from it legally (or financially) feasibly. This is the power of human nature. The reason we have laws and regulations in modern society is to promote a standard quality of life to control human nature rather than being controlled by it. In gaming terms, that means that the devs regulate the game in such a way that the reason for people playing the game (“fun”) is not undermined by the systems that it employs to support said “fun”. That being said, human nature is like water and laws/regulations are like pipes. We wouldn’t need plumbers if that always worked out the way we planned.

Oh well. Doesn’t matter. As I said, its academic. If JS wants to change the TP, its on him. If I get bored of making trifling amounts of gold, farming in the ways I find enjoyable, there are other games with rewards just as shiny that don’t involve grinding geared towards player controlled goalposts. /shrug

Pretty much as stated above. If you really want viable tips, you need to find someone in game who is a regular TP trader and “network” with them to learn the trade. Its not for everyone, but its the most money you can make in game with a character that never has to leave the capital city. Ebonhawk is nice, btw.
