I could get 11 stacks easily (sometimes more) using elixir b, hgh, and the healing/might trait in the power tier (using med kit).

See, compare that Grandmaster trait to HGH. HGH should at a minimum, apply two stacks on self use elixirs, maybe keep thrown elixirs at one. In order to get the levels of Might you mention, you’d have to be chugging down the Elixir H as soon as it was off cooldown, and/or taking advantage of the medkit bug where it acts as a heal (and incorrectly applies Might).

As it is currently, I find HGH most useful for Elixir Tosses granting a small bit of might to allies.

Fun fact about power shoes: it means you travel the same speed out of combat in combat, without swiftness. There is a reason its a master trait, mainly this lets you kite things really easily, even without swiftness.

Now list for me situations in which I wouldn’t take Swiftness over it.

Even mobs that turn boons into conditions rarely do it fast enough while I’m still in range.

Blood Legion Dye Colors

I’m almost certain there are indeed multiple shades too. I’ve noticed the nearly pink guards in the Citadel and Lion’s Arch as well.

Likewise, I’ve noticed Iron Legion soldiers with a dark secondary color (close to Pitch or Grey), after Iron, and others with a much lighter one. (Like Fog)

HGH needs to give at least two stacks of might to be worth it. You can get better might stacks with bombkit 2 and/or flamethrower 4 + blast finishers. I can barely keep up ~6 stacks of might with HGH as it stands now.

Healing traits seem a bit broken, currently. I have this feeling that if I drop Firearms from my engi’s support build and go Tools, I’ll see better healing output, simply because of that second Superelixir. (Until it gets nerfed, as we all know it’s going to be).

As for the Traits listed in the OP: Acidic Elixirs, Reserve Mines, Acidic Coating, and both the movement speed traits are indeed, useless. And that’s without all the currently broken traits we have!

What is your favorite build in PVE

I’ve been using the following support/control Elixir build forever. http://tinyurl.com/aotfk3o

With 20 points in Firearms, I can switch to Rifle based traits if need be, or Reinforced Shields from Inventions. I can additionally go more support or control with various traits in Alchemy.

Elixir R or S, depending whether I wanna be more support or tanky, or U for a tad bit of burst damage. I’ve been using Toolkit/Grenades a lot in this slot too.

All in all, it’s a very resilient build – With perma swiftness and constant cripple and daze/stun effects, I can kite forever. A little bit of gear with healing power, and I can heal through ridiculous amounts of damage, that which I haven’t blocked/reflected or was invulnerable to, anyway. It’s incredibly rare that I go down, except in situations in which I need to put down targets quickly/prevent from overwhelming.

I am very strongly considering a respec. My damage output currently is balls, even with a constant 6+ stacks of might and perma-Fury. I’m going to play around with different gear a bit, but I think I’m going to respec to ye olde Static Discharge build for better damage and access to Kit Refinement, via dropping Firearms altogether, and possibly some of Inventions.

Medium Armor

Currently, it seems like Cultural armor is the best way to go for appropriate looking engineer gear. Charr T3 and T1 in particular looks fantastic on engineers… though I suppose I am slightly biased, having the majority of my characters Charr.

Defeat the Veteran Cave Spider

This spider definitely seems to have the health of a Champion. I actually didn’t notice the different in levels before, I just knew that it hit like a truck, if allowed to.

It took several minutes for a conidition-mancer and a power necro to down it. I more or less fought it on my engineer through at least three Supply Drops.

It’s not unusual for skill point challenge NPC’s to have a ton of HP, but they usually have some kind of warning… (the Cow SP in Diessa Plateau comes to mind) This one seems more likely to be simply bugged to me.

None of the important engineer bugs or issues have been addressed in the last 2 months so, nothing’s changed basically.

Other than various nerfs… pretty much this. I guess toolkit is better, though.

Asura Mesmer Greatsword #1 skill bug?

It’s not just Asura with issues. On my female Charr mesmer, the GS looks incredibly unnatural, as it levitates above my left arm, completely still while casting, with an energy arc between both paws. No spin or anything.

I don’t ever use GS however, given how broken it is atm. (Izerker in particular), so I don’t see it often… but still.

Is this intentional? It looks really, really weird..

Random noise - very loud!

I sometimes hear an extremely loud, hollow, pop with some echo to it. Always pretty much randomly, even when GW2 is minimized and muted when on the back.

Same as this.

I often hear an echoed staticy super loud pop. It seems to happen often when I tab back into the game, or waypoint somewhere.

Happens regardless of what class I’m playing, pet or no. (Though I had the minion footstep in water bug before, which was fixed)

Elixir Gun’s Super Elixir is healing for more than it should on each pulse. With 0 Healing Power, each pulse should heal for 140 but it actually heals for 380.

I’m willing to bet you this will be fixed, and Super Elixir’s heal will be nerfed. Just keep this in mind, all you water field naysayers. Especially considering Super Elixir’s super short cooldown, on top of Kit Refinement.

How many blast finishers does the average Engineer actually run with?

Supply drop is the only viable elite at the moment for pretty much every build. That and, most support engineers go shields. That’s without utility skills too, just off the top of my head.

I’m not disagreeing with you, I just think it’s more that many just don’t realize they have blast finishers at their disposal.

I use Oxblood and Nightshade personally, with Silver spikes on my T1 Heavy cultural.

It’s definitely not perfect, but it appears as if it’s a shinier, newer set of armor. As if my Warrior only recently received it, and is more than eager to break it in. Or ruined his old armor (yet again), and had to get a new set

As for any Iron Legion Charr players that wander in: My Engineer’s T1 medium cultural uses Iron + Silver Lead with or Ivory accessories (matches her hair and horns) Fog is a better match. You can use Stone or Matte too.

I actually had no idea how similar my engineer looked to the Iron Legion standard until I stood next to a merchant from Iron Legion. I just figured, Iron + greyer/white colors.

Invulnerable Enemies

Many things cause it, and ‘resetting’.

Blind/stealth ‘ends’ combat sometimes. Killing a minion (including turrets). Even transformations (Elixir S on engi). Standing on a bit of terrain that the AI can’t get to…

I can understand the need for resetting and ‘leashing’ mobs, but it shouldn’t happen so quickly. Especially if there are active conditions and damage being done to the mob.

Elixir X at least has a use. Drink the thing when you want to chain CC enemies or any situtation a tornado or bezerker would be used (not many but they exist)

Mortar however is completely outshined by grenades. I really don’t see the use other than letting teammates play around with it. Even if you wanted to try like a 4 turret then mortar base setup it would be better to drop turrets with supply drop and bring grenade kit.

That’s just it. Elixir X feels like a crappy racial elite, rather than a profession elite. Some racials have situation uses, sure. I like switching to Take Root for example, on my Sylvari Necro, when I wanna kill my Flesh Golem cause he’s being a twat and not attacking anything, except for everything when I’m trying to escape. >_>

On a more serious note, I kinda feel like that’s sorta one big problem with both Necromancer and Engineer atm. There’s… only one viable elite for each class.

Plague is useless, yes, even with a spammable blind. You’re better off simply freezing/crippling and fear spamming, and just not being hit in general. And condition builds should be spreading conditions via Epidemic, Plague is only moderately useful for the extra HP. Lich form is most useful for it’s /dance. And uh… yeah. Dancing. And getting focused in PVP.

The situation with engineer feels very much the same.

Mesmer illusions are mostly ok but OMG im so sick of my necro minions just standing still while i fight and die.

The recent patch a week or so ago pretty well broke Mesmer Illusions. They just stand around doing nothing for several seconds. (Not sure if it’s been fixed)

My first character was Asura. I found the first two chapters confusing, the starting zone even more so. Third was human… Didn’t like the storyline intro, nor the tie in to the Zhaitan quest. I no longer have either of these characters.

My second however, was Sylvari. I dunno, something just clicked immediately. Like everything made sense. Like I knew, completely, what my purpose, my calling within Tyria was. There was no question about it. It was epic, yet whimsical.

I then made a few Charr. I do rather like the intro tutorial, and am in love with Charr society, I feel the whole thing fits very much like a glove. Fighting alongside my warband…. That being said I dislike the transition from the third act onward. It’s like you spend two whole acts rebuilding your warband, and then never see them again. I can understand how and why you wind up joining an Order, but it’s never said anywhere what happens to your Warband, or your status among the Legions. Perhaps there’s more later – I’m only at the start of Chapter 7 on my highest level Charr.


Going to the Pale Tree for advice after losing Claw Island

(minor spoiler?) made total sense on my Sylvari. It was to be expected. Felt completely right. It was a little… Odd at first, for my Charr. But then Trahearne’s a Sylvari so there… right?

I have to say without a doubt, that Sylvari and Charr are very much my favorite races in GW2. Currently, I’ve two Sylvari, four Charr and a Norn. (Yeah… I’m a fur, so sue me.) I might reroll my Norn as human, just to give that storyline another shot, but I personally have no interest in Asura at the moment, and little in Norn. Maybe because Zojja annoys me so much… But to each his own, right?

I don’t know that the Sylvari got the most attention or anything, but I feel their storyline is the most directly tied into the overall story, definitely.

What about dat hidden pistol toolbelt. Now I can do thief unload to make full use of quip (if i ever get it).

Eh… Thieves can do it 3+ times. Granted, without the evade utility… But thieves aren’t exactly lacking those.

Tested with only Potent Elixirs as a major, 20 points in Alchemy, in the Mists. Rampage does indeed now last 25s and Tornado 18s.

Strange as, someone on the forum here also confirmed that theirs wasn’t working. Must have a similar build, with a trait that breaks it…

Engineers down state..horrible

I gotta say : Engineer have the worse downed state of the game, on par with Ranger.

Ranger might be a bit better only because they can still use their pet when downed. When they know how to use them, they can have one more interrupt.

To those saying engineer downed state are good, tell me what an engineer can do, that other can’t?

Only the #3 of engineer is powerful, really powerful. But you never get to use it. Even with glass cannon spec, my #1 hit like a wet noodle. To the person we can do fearly good damage with #1, that’s ain’t true at all.

Mindblast from my mesmer can hit for 1.5k. Never with my Engi I got close to that. But hey, at least I can inflect random condition that might not help me at all. :P

The #2 pull, is the worse #2 in the game.

  • It’s a single player interrupt. 5 of the class have AoE #2 (moving abilities count as AoE interrupt).
  • Won’t work on stability/Stealth/Block/Elixir S(not sure the name, the miniature one). Mobily #2 like thief mesmer elem don’t care about those boon.
  • It actually pull the ennemy toward you. You don’t want that. The #2 of necro at least create some distance. (untraited, it’s only 1 sec by the way, unlike somoene said)

The #3 explosion is really strong. I have nothing to say about it, but you don’t have the chance to use it.

A remake of #2 is all engi need. The #1 isn’t that bad, it’s just the random that can be a a pain.

I think this sums it up pretty well. #2 is just terrible and runs contrary to the point of downed state. At the very, very, least, make it like Harpoon Gun #3, like someone else suggested. At least then, engies have a chance of actually surviving AoE while down.

Still bugged on Tarnished Coast.

For those on realms where the sharks get stuck: It IS still possible to complete the skillpoint. Even with it broken as it is now, I was able to complete it on two toons.

Enter the cave as normally to trigger them to turn hostile, if they’re not already.

KIll any that are in the cave, or the surrounding water. If there are no further visible targets and it still shows the event in progress, check the surrounding cave walls. I was able to aoe/condition damage a shark stuck in the cave wall down to finish the event. If necessary, bind a key to ‘next target’ so you can select the shark(s) through the wall.

I actually started hanging around the skillpoint and offering to help people complete it this way for a little while too.

So yeah, the primary bug here is that the sharks do not reset properly, and sometimes end up in the wall or even outside of their cave.

Be really nice to have a 1h power alternative to pistol. Need something to pair with a shield, as it offers nothing condition wise.

Currently the only thing a pistol has for a tank-y control build is the blind and, to a lesser extent, the confuse.

Even rifles can do bleeds and burns (when traited). Pistol’s benefit from power is laughable.

Also, charrzooka does not fit at all with kits-based gameplay (need to switch kits a lot). If it behaved like a kit during its 60 seconds or 15 shots duration I would consider using it, but not as it is right now.

Agreed. At the very least, make it re-equipable during it’s duration, it can’t be that difficult. I don’t ever use it either.

I did just try it. The cooldown is the full 120 seconds. (Not counting the time it takes for the effect to wear off). Elixir reduction does nothing to Elixir X, both in PVE and sPVP. Both in tooltip and timer.

None of the elixir traits work Elixir X currently, aside from HGH.

I actually did the puzzle again last week, and people that got there prior to me had noticed that the troll was infact, invulnerable.

We all gave up on it there, and ported out (none of us in combat), and as far as I know, there’s no Rampaging Destroyer Troll running about on the surface of Timberlane on our realm anyway.

I actually forgot to report the invulnerability thing. The puzzle was working fine a month ago… after the chest was broken for so long.

Elixir X is definitely not affected by Elixir traits, including Potent Elixirs.

With Potent Elixirs on, on using Elixir F, the tooltip for stability shows a 20% increase in duration, however the actual transformation is not affected, either in tooltip or actuality.

Once you exit the transformation, you lose the stability, even though it still shows several seconds left when it vanishes.

So currently, Elixir X isn’t working with any elixir traits, other than HGH. Tested in PVE and Mists.

Edit: Actually the stability is the same duration (which is cut short when the transformation ends) even without Potent Elixirs. Either way, it still stands that Elixir X isn’t affected by it.

Elixir X only benefits from Potent Elixirs (20% duration), according to the Engi bug thread… But it definitely isn’t working for me currently, testing in PVE. I’ll try Mists later.

The other elixir traits do not affect it whatsoever, definitely a bug.

Elixir Gun’s Super elixir is also not affected by elixir traits, despite being marked as an Elixir ability. Though, to be fair, the 20% CD reduction on EG abilities already affects Super Elixir. An additional 20% would be kinda silly, unless maybe it was multiplicatively added.

Artillery Strike currently, is a waste of an elite skill. It does very poor damage… And has a very short range to cast (450) on an immense cooldown. I’m pretty sure that the Grenade kit utility Barrage does more damage, with well over double the range on a 30 second cooldown…

Autoloot not working

Auto loot makes it so that when you interact with an object (corpse of a mob, a treasure chest, etc) it’s automatically put in your inventory. So it’s working as intended.

With autoloot off, on looting, you get a little window of the container’s loot, and have to click or drag the loot over into your bags.

There’s no autoloot in the sense of, say, walking over objects and automatically picking up everything.

Those are from early september. I do dungeon runs daily and I see more mesmers than engies

I haven’t looked at anything recent, but at least as of ~ one month after release, Mesmer was the least played class, followed by Necromancer, then Engineer, according to a census.

It’s very possible that said warrior is infact a downscaled level 80.

Warriors and thieves have great burst damage, but engineers are just as capable. Engineers shine in terms of sustained area damage, in particular.

I’d take a bit of time to better understand game mechanics, including reexamining your build and gear, judging from your other post. You’re not gonna be doing a lot of damage with flamethrower, as it’s a control weapon mostly.

I jump on Charr’s cause they’re soft.

Hopefully it’s a Charr that wants to be jumped on…else you’ll likely bleed a lot.

My problem with Charr platforming is that the Charr are so big the camera starts freaking out when I’m anywhere near a tight space. It’s truly annoying.

This is my problem too. I actually died running the Caledon volcano puzzle on one of my Charr, because I hit a confined space and couldn’t get my bearings in time before the timed platforms disappeared.

Ashford map is active at all hours of the day, at least on Tarnished Coast. I was surprised to see it going on into the wee hours of the morning…

Heal skills

Healing Turret is kinda nice for the water field it’s activation skill lays down, as well as two upfront heals.

As an Elixir built support, Egun’s utility and Toss H is all the regeneration I need to throw out, so I almost never wind up using the turret. For solo play, Medkit works fantastic, but I default to H, and less frequently, healing turret.

As for Medkit: there are various traits that affect it. The best part about it, is that it counts as an activated heal skill when equipped, even though it doesn’t trigger the heal skill cooldown.

I like that all our heal skills are quite useful and viable, personally.

Perma Swift Engi Build?

Just as a disclaimer: I never said anywhere you had use Medkit while in combat. It takes but a second to switch back to whatever heal skill you need prior to combat, as Drop Stimulant does not trigger the heal skill cooldown.

Point is, any engineer can have perma-swiftness for as long as they want, before entering a fight. (And some after, depending on build).

Perma Swift Engi Build?

… You don’t need any traits or any build to have perma-Swiftness as an engineer. Medkit Drop Stimulant for 10s Swiftness every 20, and elixir B for an additional 10.

That’s without Elixir H and Toss B, too. Speedy Kits is a waste of a major, imo.

Engineers down state..horrible

I have to say, after trying other professions, I am amazed by how bad Engineer’s downed state abilities are.

The only remotely decent thing we have is the ability to pull low hp mobs from a pack to us, in the hopes to rally off it via exploding it with 3 and spamming 1. But by the time you have 3 available, you’re generally deader than dead.

I love my thief, mesmer and elementalist’s down skills. I’ve saved myself numerous times…

Yeah, with power, 2 and 4 do surprisingly nice amounts of damage, 4 on static objects in particular. The auto attack can stack bleeds nice if you have condition dam/duration. I use it underwater with Elixir U often. But indeed, it’s primarily support.

Just out of curiosity, check your graphics options. You don’t have “Render Sampling” set to ‘Subsample’ do you?

I had this same problem briefly, and I realized I accidentally switched it to subsample. Switch it back to native or supersample.

What profession would you suggest?

Having both a Charr warrior and engineer, I’d say I’m slightly biased… But really – Play as whatever class you feel fits your Charr!

I’m far from the most familiar with GW lore, but Warriors and Engineers are basically the bread and butter profession for Blood and Iron legions, respectively. Ash is comprised largely of Thieves and Necromancers. There’s no shortage of Charr NPC’s and characters of these classes.

I’ve seen Guardians in Blood, Rangers in all three legions, as well as Elementalist. I don’t recall ever coming across a Charr mesmer NPC, but players often go Ash with Mesmer.

Personally, Guardian made the least sense to me for a Charr. I’m not sure how much virtues and spiritual zeal fit into the Charr war machine, but there are plenty of them throughout Tyria. (Most notably, the leader of the Vigil).

Conditions on Downed are Permanent?

I don’t think it’s completely related, but I’ve noticed this with both conditions and boons too. I’ll sometimes have several extra seconds of say, swiftness on my engineer or warrior. The timer has run out, and it doesn’t list a duration, but I’m still moving faster…

I’ve also seen conditions I apply on mobs in PVE last extra seconds – I’ve had burns and poison last for way longer than they should. No duration, yet the effect remains.
