1. Don’t use your gold to buy gear upgrades. Save it for when you’re 80. Buy gear upgrades with karma from zone karma vendors.
Weird, I would recommend the opposite. Buying an entire set of new gear every 10 levels (at levels that end in 5, starting at 15 and ending at 65) costs almost nothing. As long as you aren’t dumb and try to buy rare or exotic items, and just stick with green accessories, they can all cost under a silver each. It’s unlikely you’ll spend even a gold going all the way from 15-80 just buying stuff off the market. Hell, sometimes I buy extra higher level armor just for the looks because it’s virtually free.
Karma on the other hand I would prefer to save for high-level karma gear.
Agreed. Upgrading your gear every 10 levels via TP and gold is really cheap… Save your karma. It costs less than 6-8 silver usually to fully overhaul my gear every ten levels – even buying masterwork level items. Bout the same as waypointing a few times at 80.
There’s no reason to buy anything above Masterwork while upgrading leveling gear though… Heck, fine quality should do, unless you’re filthy rich and wanna min/max out the wazoo. The price difference between Masterwork and Rare is drastic.
Better yet, just make your gear as you level!
For the toast!
I’ve noticed this too… I credited it to hitting 80 recently, and getting used to my new gear in higher level zones. But I feel a bit squishier than I did previously.
I still almost never go down though, with my PVE control build.
Keep in mind, you do lose the stats of your primary weapon(s) on equipping any kit. So if you have your pistols/shield or rifles with Vit or Toughness, you do lose that while having a kit like Egun out.
For the toast!
@ KirinDave, re: traits
Speedy kits though…nothing like a quick strategic retreat or fast zone traverse…spamming medi-kit n toolkit.
Speedy Kits is so overrated for leveling. It’s fine, but once I get where I am going I turn it off. And I certainly think there are better traits to pick up first. If you have to retreat in PvE and you can’t do it by just running, it’s unlikely swiftness will make a difference anyways. A far better solution is to snare.
To each their own…I like perma-swiftness.
Being Elixir build, I have perma Swiftness, Fury, Regen, and Might. Most of the time I have Retal, Protection and Vigor too… But yeah, to each his own.
For the toast!
I agree, med kits refinement skill – small explosion – is just as amazingly useful as necromancers jagged horrors.
At least jagged horrors sometimes confuse opponent targetting.
Oh, I didn’t know targets could get confused by it. I guess kit explosions are so completely useless it has its own standing.
Jagged Horrors are way more useful than they get credit for. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve had them hold off even several mobs, buying me time to perform tasks for events (interact with objects, pick up allies etc). Just by drawing aggro for a few seconds is more than minion-less classes get.
The biggest issue with them at the moment is shared with all Necro minions – They have a mind of their own and tend to attack targets on a whim, sometimes even going out of their way to pull several mobs. Or, they just sit there and do nothing.
As for Kit Refinement’s Medkit ability… It honestly does just seem like Anet was lazy and recycled. But I guess it’s better than nothing at all… or something… Yes, something unique to Medkit would be nice.
For the toast!
Strangely, I actually can’t recreate this bug in cities. Or at least, The Black Citadel and The Grove… Yet I can actually do it on purpose in ‘the wild’ so to speak, in actual zones, routinely.
For the toast!
I was gonna start a thread on this, but never got around to it.
This happens when you’re moving when you try to interact with an object… It’s highly annoying.
I do so love applying swiftness, laying down a banner on my warrior, and going to pick it up… Only to swiflty run past my banner, and fall off the cliffside to my death, because I have no control over my chracter.
For the toast!
Hi all,
thanks a lot for all you advices and tips. OK engineer is squishy at start, gets better later@Raf: I always keep on moving, but my main problem comes from long ranged mobs. thanks a lot for the build you linked. I will try it
@Kirin: thanks a lot for explaining you leveling technique.
what do u mean by " Engineer is not a low APM class. "
Indeed, the description of Thumper Turret doesn’t show that it does a good job. Will give it a try@Lego: thanks also for your tips. Thumper turret seems really worth trying
Do you mean Slick Shoes when you are talking about speedy kits ?
I still have few question concerning some skills:
Flamethrower kit: 1st skill of it is bugged? Most of the time I get misses when I use it while moving.
Bomb kit: I have the feeling that I wasted 3 TPs for a useless kit. Maybe I am using it wrongIt seems you drop the bombs only where you are standing …
Engineer definitely isn’t a ‘low APM class.’ What’s meant by that, literally, is actions per minute. The point being: engineer isn’t a class with which you can sit there and do extremely well at any single task. You’re not going to be able to sit there and facetank as well as a guardian or warrior, for example. How well an engineer does is very dependent on the player’s awareness of how the game works and how quickly you react to situations and use your abilities and skills to your advantage.
That’s not to say Engineers are squishy or flawed – Take a loot at the Tankcat build for WvW, linked here in the forums for an example of how well Engies can do in wPvP.
Speedy Kits is a major trait, I believe in the Tools trait line, granting 5 secs of swiftness when you switch to a kit.
And yes, Flamethrower 1, Pistol 4, and Elixir Gun 3 all use the same mechanics, and are slightly bugged. They do work reliably, but you must aim them, or else you will miss constantly. There are a few specific mobs in PVE that you will miss 100% with these abilities, regardless though… that’s indeed, a bug.
Bombs are indeed, dropped where you are standing.
Hope that helps a bit! And I have to agree – Engineers probably have the roughest time starting out while leveling… It was my third toon, and I honestly nearly gave up hope on the class several times. Now it’s one of my two 80’s and my main.
For the toast!
I think we can all agree that the pre-Lost Shores patch mid-November was essentially the Necro-love patch.
Much (but not even close to all) of Necro’s brokenness was addressed. All I can say is that I hope Engineer has it’s day soon enough in a big patch like that.
For the toast!
A good rule of thumb to go by: If it’s a mob that never drops loot you can’t rally off of it. Same applies for sigil stacks.
‘Fodder’ mobs like this are pretty frequent as minions, or part of events and such.
I don’t believe they give XP either (I haven’t paid attention).

Kalith Seerbane, Blood Legion warrior.
Aylanis Stoneclaw, Iron Legion engineer.
Threw in an older one of my engi, just cause of how adorable Charr look with hats/tophats.
I’ll upload more of my Mesmer and Thief gals later, once I get the latter in some Cultural gear.
For the toast!
After having purchased the T1 medium set for my Engineer, I have to say – I rather really like the Charr cultural sets. The heavy stuff is great, imo. While the T2 and T3 Medium look more suited for thief/rangers, I’m pleasantly surprised by how great my Engineer looks in T1 cultural, representing Iron Legion.
I just picked up T1 cloth for my Mesmer Charr gal, and it’s probably my least favorite T1 so far – mostly because I can’t stand how big the shoulderpads are. I’ve switched the shoulders for something I like more… But I also found a rather annoying bug.
There’s a pretty large gap in my Mesmer’s midsection while wearing the T1 Invoker’s set. It’s glaringly obvious while running upright, as I can see daylight and terrain through my own body… The gap grows and shrinks as I run, in a rather disturbing fashion.
I’ve made a post in the bug reporting armor sticky already, but take a look for yourself… Honestly, incredibly disappointed by this, as it just looks plain silly. Made a quick youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK19d5uodLw

Issue with T1 Charr Cloth cultural armor.
- Charr
- Female
-Mesmer
- Smallest physique (I believe), smaller height scale.
-Full Invoker’s Set, Charr T1 Cloth Cultural, minus the shoulderpads. (Wearing Masquerade Mantle, tailor made Rare)
-Not transmuted. (Yet)
There’s a pretty noticeably large gap between the coat and leggings – you can see daylight through my midsection. It’s harder to notice when running on all fours, but while upright and running on two feet, it’s glaringly obvious. As you move, the gap changes in size, widening and narrowing.
I happened to first see it while traveling through Wayfarer Foothills – Suddenly I can see snow glaring through my character’s midsection…
I don’t know if this is because of my character’s physique or size, or gender. But it’s rather incredibly disappointing… I was quite satisfied with my engineer’s T1 leather set, and my warrior’s T1 heavy armor set. Excited to buy this cloth set, and finally have it all dyed, only to not want to wear it anymore, because of this bug.
Made a short video, I’ll link later, once Youtube is out of Read-Only mode.
Also not sure if it matters – but I keep the game on best performance/low settings, with added low post-process effects and Native sampling.
Edit: Here’s a youtube link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK19d5uodLw
It’s most noticable at 0:30-0:40, and 0:48-0:52.

There was nothing wrong with jumping before… Nor was there anything mentioned in the patch notes as being changed.
Yet here we are with unresponsive jumping.
Because pressing jump and nothing happening as you plummet to your death on a really long and complicated jump puzzle is a feature not a bug.
For the toast!
Been like this for months, on Tarnished Coast as well.
Both Champion Ogre Beastmasters, at Sootpan Kraal and Behemian Krall do this – they reset their HP for no particular reason. Even if they’re completely locked in combat still, while taking damage/attacking.
It’s really finicky – it is possible to kill them. It just takes a few tries, and way too much time…
Point being, this is a bug, and it needs to be addressed. I submitted a bug report ingame for both events. It’s only this zone too seemingly – there are Champion Ogre Beastmasters in Fields of Ruin that don’t exhibit this resetting behavior.

Necro plague form does not crash
It’s like Death Shroud, it’s not technichally a transformation as you continue to use the same model.
For the toast!
Just logged into my Necro to test, confirmed.
Easy repro indeed…
For the toast!
Welcome to the wonderful world of engineers. I have the Mad Memories back slot item, and whenever I equip I shield, the book (back slot) is hidden… Which is fine.
But when I draw my my shield in combat, I draw the book too… Which then vanishes on my arm. And when I stow my shield, I see myself stowing the book as well.
But yeah, there are plenty of issues with kits and back slot items.

Another incident here – leveling another character through Metrica Province. I took the Asura gate at the Transfer Gate (Private) Point of interest, and I was stuck loading indefinitely.
For the toast!
Report any players you see doing this. The more reports we get in, the sooner they can be banned.
It’s some kinda bot or hack, definitely.
For the toast!
I’ve managed to add and report one.
The funny thing is, it’s an account with only 65 achievement points. I was in Metrica when I saw a level 12 human porting between nodes – Even porting into a 15 area, where he was attacked and killed by several mobs. He did this twice.
I added him at this point, reported, and observed his character’s zone movements – He’s able to instantly teleport from Metrica to Sparkfly, to Bloodtide, Dredgehaunt, Mount Maelstrom at impossible speeds. I don’t know what level his character(s) are, but if the achievement point count is any indication, it can’t be very high.
Keep adding posts people, and keep reporting any spotted bots. I think Anet very much needs to be made aware of this, as they’re definitely going to be affecting the economy drastically.
For the toast!
Seems to be a growing thing. I started seeing them sometime last week in Sparkfly and Bloodtide. Hoping to catch the next one in time to report…
For the toast!
I’ve actually seen what I believe to be the very same person. I’ve spotted a female norn ranger with bear pet numerous times the last week in Bloodtide Coast and Sparkfly Fen – She just appears literally out of thin air, harvests a node, and vanishes.
I’ve also noticed her appearing again after I waypointed to another point of the map – seemingly as if she travels instantly.
Maybe 6-7 sightings. Each time I didn’t think to report, or add right away… If I see again, I will definitely report her.
For the toast!
I also have the smallest female build for my engineer. The only shoulders that I’ve found so far that don’t look silly, are the pirate ones sadly – and that’s because they’re so small you can’t see the glaring problems.
For some reason, most medium shoulderpads float above my shoulders quite noticeably. It’s particularly easy to see, since I’m running on all fours most of the time… I’ll check it out on my Charr thief – she’s average built.
For the toast!
Just a few screenshots. Both are the utility belt ability.

Tarnished Coast, it’s been like this on and off for two weeks.
There are actually at least two other threads on this, which have already been merged.
For the toast!
I know Rifled Barrels was for sure, working during the Halloween event at least, for the elixir gun. I used the extra range to pull mobs, to help clear before taking on the Mad King. Must have broken between then and now, if it’s not working now.
For the toast!
The Lost Grotto PoI at least isn’t instanced at all – you have to take underwater sewage pipes to get to it normally.
I haven’t personally had a story connected to it yet, but I assume you’ve tried getting to the PoI and checking to see if the entrance is there?
For the toast!
Yep, Hidden Pistols has been like this forever. I’ll upload screenies on my own engineer later.
Even the pistol muzzle flare is upwards.
For the toast!
Double check with with a completed map of Harathi online, and actually count them out. PoI’s and Vistas etc. can be concealed in an unexplored area of the map.
For the toast!
I submitted a screenshot bug report yesterday ingame.
I don’t think a description is much neccessary, other than me stating the zone and general area… Really speaks for it self.
For the toast!
My biggest issue with the Charr is indeed, the clipping weapons, and difficulty in viewing item previews.
Almost every smaller single handed weapon is hidden under a Charr player’s chestpeice, I find myself previewing gear on my Sylvari or Human characters, just to see what things like Pistols, daggers and shields actually look like.
As for Cultural armor – I’ve so far only bought Heavy T1 for my Charr Warrior, and I love it. Heavy armor in general looks great imo, but T2 Heavy looks like it was made specifically for Guardians. (Charr guardians never made much sense to me, personally.)
I fell in love with T3 light the moment I saw it on Character creation preview. T1 isn’t bad looking either, def. picking it up for my Mesmer.
I’m a little disappointed with Charr Medium armor sets though, personally. They all seem to fit Ranger or Thief professions much more than any Engineer.
For the toast!
Viktor Rageclaw – 6/10 Viktor makes me think of a really big Norn warrior. Or even maybe a shady human thief or necro.
Kalim Steelhorn – 9/10 I do like this both in first and surname. Sounds very much like someone I’d like one of my charr to meet.
Flik Blazefang – 8/10 First name is nice and sharp consonant starting, like most female charr. The surname is perfect for an elementalist, as well.
As for my characters:
Aylanis Stoneclaw – Engineer and proud member of the Priory, Iron Legion to her grave. Practical, a bit of a rogue, some would say undisciplined by Charr standards – she’s a charmer with an underlying unyielding spirit.
Kalith Seerbane – Warrior of the Blood Legion. Rather dignified and well mannered – for a Charr. Although he may not be as big or as gruff as other Charr grunts, he’s a fierce Legionnaire, and shouldn’t be underestimated. Got his name for having a particular distrust of magic users, after his elementalist father joined Flame.
Inara Shimmerpaw – Mesmer in Ash Legion. A relatively quiet girl who lets her deceptive illusionary magic do all the talking. Her calm demeanor masks the mind of a cunning predator, always two steps ahead – By the time her foes realize something is amiss, it’s already too late.
I created the first before experiencing much of the game, or being too familiar with Charr naming conventions and important names/warbands.
For the toast!
I definitely prefer Warband Support, personally, both for what it is and for function/usefulness. I only wish the actual NPCs that showed up at least somewhat reflected your personal story Warband, other than by Legion.
Hidden Pistol is still, imo, the best Charr racial though, particularly for Engineers who get double mileage from it…
For the toast!
Fix Minion AI and/or give us some measure of control over them.
Race based skins would be nice, but it’s just a luxury, and honestly, a ton of work… That’s five minions, times five races. Wouldn’t make much sense either – every necromancer uses the same methods to create the same minions. What race you are should have no effect on what you create.
Siphoning is currently a joke, really… There’s no two ways about that. But I have to say, minions aren’t nearly as squishy or useless as most seem to make them out to be. I’m using a 10/10/10/20/20 build, and I can keep even bone minions alive forever with deathsroud and constant regen alone… Even against vets.
You would be better off with transfusion than blood thirst. ATM blood thirst doesn’t increase life siphoning by 50%, it’s closer to 25%.
I can vouch for Transfusion’s awesomeness. I don’t even need to use Well of Blood to ever heal minions, I prefer to keep Consume Conditions.
For the toast!
I put 10 points into Spite just to get Signet Mastery’s 20% off CD, just for this Signet.
When I don’t need it for party support, I switch to Reaper’s Might for some extra damage in DS.
For the toast!
… Huh?
I clicked this topic expecting to see how Greater Mark’s “unblockable” feature seems a bit iffy.
It’s a known issue that only Chillblain’s tooltip shows an increase in radius yes. However, all the marks, including Mark of Evasion’s are indeed at the new 240 radius – as large as a well.
I’ve been using Greater Marks for as long as I put my first 10 points into Death Magic, and have been applying beautiful wide range bleeds, chills, fears, and condition transfers for some time.
Edit: Tried disabling Fast-casting. The AoE indicator is indeed bugged – only Chillblains shows correctly. The actual marks though, definitely have a 240 radius.

I actually wound up fighting two of these at once, and survived just fine, solo.
Granted, I had already stripped the armor from the first one before accidentally pulling the second. I could have run, but I thought I had it under control… and I did.
10/10/10/20/20 build here. I was still rocking 65-75 gear at the time too…
For the toast!
My first 80 was a Necro. My most played character is still my Necro.
I was indeed, confused by the nature of the post at first glance. Necros aren’t 100% completely dependant on conditions you know… I had no issues with this event, even using a condition build for my damage – Deathsroud mechanics and minions alone helped me kill it solo… Granted, I was much higher level than the zone. (~ level 55)
For the toast!
I’ve found the trait pretty darn useful. It buys a lot more time drawing aggro than you might think, given how fragile the jagged horror is. But on countless occasions, it’s bought me time to revive a friend, or buy precious seconds to have a cooldown run out.
That being said, there’s no excuse for when the jagged horror pulls everything like it does have an occasional tendency to do.
They’re not useful for damage at all, no. They’re not really meant to be…
For the toast!
I had this happen as well, when accessing the TP from an Overflow.
I closed and reopened it, and things were back in English.
For the toast!
I haven’t personally ever had problems with this event. It’s always successfully worked after the harpy attack.
I have friends on Ehmry Bay who insist it isn’t working, however. Seems to be another bug which is only broken on select realms.
For the toast!
I’ve experienced the Boneflayer duplication thing too – there were four Legionnaire Boneflayers running around on my realm the last time I encountered the event.
Even with four, they failed to take out the last veteran on their own. Strangely enough, I started reviving the clones, and after reviving the third one, the event had updated – Both the final vet and Legionnaire Boneflayer were instantly teleported to Summit Peak to the south.
I waypointed and found that indeed, one of the Boneflayers was attacking the Veteran which had also been teleported. After killing the vet and heading north, I saw a line of the other three Boneflayer NPC’s heading back north to the original event location.
I wish I thought to screenshot the strange displacement of the event…

Dye drops seem about normal to me. I had three drop in maybe 6 hours of gameplay yesterday.
Now if only I didn’t keep getting the same dyes when identifying them… lol
For the toast!
Again happened with Phase 3’s event. During the three hour span, I was stuck infinitely loading twice. HDD activity light off, the loading icon moving, but nothing happening.
Wound up having to do the overflow shuffle to find one that was at a similar point in the event, worrying whether or not I’d get my loot…
It happened for me when I have a ton of players loaded, and attempt to waypoint out. (ie, after a death.) I notice if I haven’t loaded everything in an area, I don’t have issues. This would make sense too for people having issues in WvW, if there are a ton of players in the area.

As others have said, it wasn’t extended like the other Phase 1 quest. Pastkeeper Saballa and Fadh are gone.
You still can do the Noll/Canach investigation line for a Jug of Karma reward.
For the toast!
I’ve only had this happen to me during the Phase 2 event yesterday. I was following the main event (and player zerg) up to the point where you build a bridge to access a different part of the island. I accidentally fell through an opening in the incomplete bridge, and waypointed.
I was stuck at the Southsun loading screen for well over five minutes… I gave up, and end tasked the client, rejoined almost instantly. By then of course, I was way behind the event.
For the toast!
With the patch early morning, yesterday, my stability issues are gone. Haven’t crashed since.
For the toast!
I haven’t checked to see if the containers and other debris are still there, but the reason that NPC is still there, is so people can turn in that phase 1 quest, tied in with Subdirector Noll and Canach; two npcs that were bugged for almost all of the first day.
For the toast!
I can second this. I’m definitely getting less karma and gold in lower level zones for events, but more XP.
I have to assume this is broken, because more XP for level capped players is worth nothing…
