Honestly, even if grenades did crap damage, it’d still be hard to beat a weapon that stacks 25 bleeds, 25 vuln, and gives permanent poison.

And regular access to blind and freeze, and the possibility of carpal tunnel syndrome in your near future…

But yeah, I definitely prefer a Rampager set over zerker for those times when I for some reason feel like torturing my wrists and fingers with grenade spam.

I’m impressed once they fix the plethora of profession/skill bugs.

Sadly as is, actually making things work would cause a whole lot of new options and builds to open up, which would require them to rework/balance a lot of classes and trait mechanics that are suddenly popularized.

It’s pretty bad when they leave certain things broken for so long that once they’re fixed, they’re treated as a ‘buff’ to that particular class. coughengineerclasshistorycough

You guys got it good with speed right now… speedy kits is a guaranteed 100% uptime on swiftness which is 33% movement speed. Better than other classes 25% movement speed increase

you’re forgetting those classes not only have 25% on traits but also usually have another 25% on signets wich makes them have 100% uptime 33% without swiftness and all the while giving them extra speed during combat wich you ll lose once in combat . enter combat and use slick shoes’s tool belt skill and you ll see how fast they really run 100% of the time during combat and then laugh at your swiftness.

Not to mention all those gap closers/openers that engies severely lack. Its very tough to chase someone down even at full swiftness when they are using those skills to move away quicker.

This is what really gets me.

It actually happens in (an instanced) Caledon Forest. Same location as the task where you’re given an Oakheart transformation.

The same thing happens in Queensdale – occasionally there’s a glitch where the human final ‘boss’ can be seen from a distance.

What those screenshots are of is the Sylvari tutorial dragon indeed, I’ve seen it myself in Caledon.

New Engineer

Halcyon.7352

The definition of ‘higher end PvE areas’ can vary widely.

For general PvE play in the open world, engineer has always been one of the stronger professions for solo play. Good access to boons, a variety of healing abilities, and damage prevention abilities are just a few reasons why. (Blocks, invuln, vigor)

For dungeons: engineers when played right can definitely hold their own. It’s rare to see them in high level fractals for the very reason that they do take more effort to play well. Also, other professions have better ways to provide better direct benefit to a group, be it raw damage, group saving boons or utilities. (Engi can do all of these, but just not as well individually as some). Engineer is not a low APM class.

I feel I should also note that engineers are great for mob/event farming, as they are far from lacking in the quick hitting and AoE areas.

Engineer damage can be lackluster unless you build properly for it. And even then, don’t expect to match a zerker warrior. Check out the HgH build that’s been popularized – there are both condition and power varieties, though the class has a natural affinity for conditions.

On the subject of weapons – do keep in mind that kits are considered to be weapon ‘sets’ for the engineer. There are traits and builds centered around them, and it’s honestly pretty difficult to play engineer well without the use of a kit or two.

Pistol/pistol is best for condition builds, shield offers support and utility, while rifle offers better power scaling and some control and utility. Grenade is our best (condition) damage kit, with the longest (traited) range, though they’re best at medium-short. Elixir Gun is great for support and healing, some conditions. Flamethrower scales well with power and offers some degree of control. Toolkit offers utility and is a strong melee kit. Finally, bomb offers a variety of conditions, but also scales fairly well with power.

And then, I got tired to do the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again…. And then gw2 came out. Exactly what I was looking for for years! Because it lacks what I hate the most in wow.

Being forced to:
Pve:
1. do daily quests to get into normal dungeons,
2. do normal dungeons to get into heroic dungeons,
3. do heroic dungeons to get into the real content: raid.
4. Repeat after each patch release.
5. Burn out.
PvP
1. Random battleground during 72 hours to not get one shot in competitive pvp: Arena/rated battleground
2. Farming conquest points during 2-3 months in arena/rated battleground just to stay on the competitive fiel, if you misssed 2 weeks of farm, you were pretty much screwed
3. Repeat after each patch release.
4. Burn out.

Was just not fun.

Power Overwhelming - stuck mobs

I noticed some time ago while doing the Event chain Power Overwhelming in Metrica that there seemed to be some inconsistencies in the Inquest ‘wave’ spawns.

There’d be long periods where nothing would happen… long periods of just seeming quiet. Can certain attribute some of it to them attacking mobs (such as the Krewe Researchers) on the way in, but it didn’t explain all of it.

I was in the area today, and a bunch of Inquest golems stuck clipped in a tree root. I can only assume these were mobs meant to attack Zoydd and his golems.

But yeah. I’d work on their spawn placement. (see screenshot)

Rofl. +1

You just know that Medkit is going to get the nerfbat. When the devs suggested that they would ‘reexamine how might stacking works for HGH builds’, the fact that activating Medkit counts as using a heal skill immediately came to mind.

That being said, I hope they do indeed make it more ‘supporty’. As it is, it’s very strong, and a good choice to keep yourself alive. But even the ‘preemptive’ use of dropping things ahead of time is hardly ever actually useful in a party situation. Needs something to make it compete with the condition removal and buff of H and the obvious benefits of Healing Turret.

Geared a ‘mothballed’ character I hadn’t played in a while with MF of 99%. Did these three events (and two Plinx Runs) over the course of about three hours. Only had a full party maybe 45 minutes, mostly 3-4 people the rest of the time. Also, was definitely not server peak time (Midnight to about 3 am on TC)

Results:
Seven rares, two named exotics.
Five Unids.

This is versus a character I farm Orr all the time with, about the same test conditions and duration, with which I got a total of two rares, two dyes.

I’d say diminishing returns plays a huge factor, aside from outright luck.

I’d have more thorough notes and exacting drop data if I had been keeping track at the time – just stumbled on this thread.

Why Is Leveling Experience *So* Inconsistent?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Halcyon.7352

Halcyon.7352

I see a lot of friends get disheartened by the leveling experience with similar complaints, and honestly, I’ve never really understood it.

Personally, when I see red mobs higher level than me, I know to avoid the area and find somewhere else to ‘quest’. It seems a pretty clear sign that I should not be in that area.

When I die to an event or a type of mob, I find a way to rework my tactics to succeed, be it reexamining my traits, or trying out a different set of skills.

On the subject of class balance: I found my mesmer and engineer difficult to level. The funny thing is? They were my first and second characters ever, respectively. I later made a new mesmer and found it so much easier to play once I knew the game a bit, you know, learned to play.

It just seems to me that other MMO’s have gone down the route of ‘dumbing’ down the gameplay experience. Which I guess, is why I find myself here. GW2 in my opinion finds the right mix of ‘casual’ pick up and play, and combat complexity.

Edit:

My experience is that even with my Warrior/Guardian; there is no “consistant experience” because I have to change their skills/weapons/traits etc multiple times. My Guardian recently hit 80 and I am still changing my setup/playstyle. My impression of my Warrior and Guardian changed much during my journey to level 80.

Coming from traditional MMOs where class improvement are mostly linear, I welcome this experience.

This is what I was getting at. You have to constantly look at all your options as a profession, to learn your class in and out. And with the depth of each class, there’s always something seemingly new you haven’t thought about, or tried yet.

It’s part of what keeps me so engaged.

your obviously new to the game. guild wars 2 is a grindfest. just wait til you hit 80. the developers lied and said it has no grind, “dynamic questing is so revolutionary” LOL. its the same thing as wow without talking to a person. at 80 there is no point to the game. they also said it would be a pvp game. LOL, you have all been conned hard. oh yea, they will delete this post soon. they do that when you dont like the game

I love that I can get a character to 80, so easily gear them, and move right on to do all sorts of end game stuff.

If not doing FotM in PvE what other end game stuff is there? Cause we all want to know about it? (for PvE, WvW is diffrent)

We “all” want to know about it? Okay.

As we’ve already defined end game at what you do at level 80, that can vary broadly from game to game and player to player. For some people WvW is end game. For some people RPing is end game. There’s a guy in my guild who loves the dungeons. I don’t, but he does. So his end game is getting armor sets from every dungeon, and doing fractals as well.

My end game is more about exploring. Finding the stuff I missed even though I have 100% world completion. That includes doing some of the achievements.

And you know, if you look that stuff up online, you can do it in a day or two. But if you actually look for it, on your own, you know like a game, some of that stuff is very hard to find.

And of course there are people slowly working on a legendary weapon which is an end game for them.

Anything you choose to do at end game that entertains you is your end game. And I’ll give you a hint. Even in games with raiding. in various polls over the years, most people don’t raid as end game…even though that’s almost always what people refer to when they refer to end game.

Well said! It’s what you choose to do to keep your occupied and keeps you engaged that defines ‘endgame’.

Personally, what I love about the game is the depth of each profession. That, in combination with my natural altitis, is a powerful thing. I’m constantly finding new ways to play my 80’s. New builds, new gear sets, new tactics. Just when I get tired of one class, I’ll shelve it, til inspiration strikes me again. It’s a large part of the ‘endgame’ in my eyes.

As I mentioned previously too, finding out the little things in the world I missed is another thing I love doing. There’s always something new, whether it’s an amusing bit of dialogue, an event chain I never knew about, or a puzzle or some other secret that seemed obvious, but was overlooked.

I’m also still working towards a legendary myself. And another large part is the eternal quest to look fabulous while adventuring/dungeoning/representing your world. Just look at the ridiculous lengths people go to for transmog sets in WoW.

And the path to 80 is unique each time to me. Always experience new things in an area I’ve been through multiple times. (Granted, this may be due to them constantly breaking and fixing dynamic events, but still.)

As a couple others have suggested, do gear up. It’s not hard to at all in this game, compared to other MMO’s.

The only way you’ll get better really is through playing and experience. It seems you’re running a full damage spec (I don’t know the Guardian traits as I don’t play one though so, disclaimer). I’m not sure why you expect to last very long in massive battles while built for damage. That’s not to say that you can’t, it’d just take some knowledge and intimate knowledge of your class to pull it off successfully.

And as some others have mentioned, you’re going to be coming up against players of all skill levels in WvW – those new and fresh to MMO’s who probably don’t know much beyond auto attacking and pressing that one button that heals them, and the seasoned sPvP expert who knows how to leave a trail of bodies. It’s very much a mixed bag.

I for one welcome this seeming inevitability. Kinda surprised it’s taken them so long to come to this point, and I do feel it’ll help make class balance for WvW a tad easier to manage, as they’ll be more free to make changes without fundamentally changing a class completely.

I just pray that the changes are limited to skills and traits. What I’ve always loved about GW2 is the fact that my PVE experiences carry over into when I represent my realm and vice versa. I’m hoping that they don’t make WvW gear, with ‘WvW’ only stats.

Problems with Engineers and Legendaries

I know your feel when it comes to Engineers with Legendaries. See attachment.

Really the only time I could show off my legendary is when I’m Lion’s Arch, or if I’m in a zerg killing a world boss where everyone can carry my crappy pistol DPS. If I’m doing dungeons, which I prefer to do than hop between various parts of the world to kill world bosses, I end up using my grenades.

Personally, I think the kits should adopt the visual themes from certain weapons we carry. In my case, I’d like to see the book from the shield grafted into my kits along with the page-turning effect to go with it.

Thank you for that amusing image. The shield was the only real contender for my engineer’s legendary, but I came to realize that it Throw Shield would more than likely have the same wooden shield effect…

Engineer can technically achieve 13+ seconds of aoe stealth, regardless of build. Just takes a bit of time to set up. (Smoke bomb + blast finishers).

Definitely, Engineer is one of the stronger ‘skip’ professions. Not due to movement effects or such, but because of the sheer amount of potential blocks, perma swiftness and vigor and Elixir S, even without the cloak gimmick.

Thief can do the same trick and save/ress a struggling team member later on using shadow refuge. If you or a thief has to wp back to help someone, who’s going back? And that’s exactly my point were good saving ourselves but we are not that good as a support class, we do have skills that help but so do others. A well timed aegis buff can save a party from a wipe, engineers just don’t have comparable skills. Those small things people are mentioning aren’t (much) better then small things other classes have ,but most classes have also some game changing party skills we don’t have.

I dunno. I’d say potentially up to 6 seconds of inlvulnerability with which we are free to do just about anything is quite nice. Toss Elixir R often seems undervalued as well – doesn’t have an immense cast time for one.

But I can definitely see what you mean. I really wish Engineers could share the boon love easier amongst the party, at the very least. Or maybe heal slightly better… something. I agree that engineers probably are the most ‘self serving class’, which is why they’re such great solo’ers.

Rune of altruism also trigger on yourself? Didn’t know this, but I can’t understand how can you combine altruism and lyssa! Isn’t better to use 2 altruism 2 rune fire 2 rune strength?

Honestly the Lyssa is mostly leftover from my old KR multikit build, there probably are better runes combinations. I just happened to like the random boon and precision.

Even without the additional might duration though, I often find myself at between 12-24 stacks of might, depending on how on top of the heal activation I am.

And yep, Altruism does trigger on self.

If you’re using Grenades, taking Enhance Performance over Explosive Powder is a huge mistake. Don’t know if you are or not, but thought you should know.

I switch them out, depending on what I need. I don’t always use grenades/bombs, I often switch for toolkit or, more rarely, flamethrower.

Yeah… I don’t remember anyone calling the kit refinement super elixir OP since the lost shores patch. The only thing we complained about was how much better the double SEs were when they were bugged.

Now it seems like a lot people agree that it was too good. Which is kind of funny considering I replaced it with speedy kits (great with invigorating speed) as soon as it was fixed.

All in all, I think that the kit refinement SE was holding things back. They couldn’t keep buffing SE because of kit refinement, and the way it before last patch was not so great without KR. Its just one more kit that doesn’t need to depend on traits to be decent.

Plenty of people whined that KR was op, primarily because of 100nades. That aside, I don’t recall anyone ever calling engineers overpowered for anything.

It’s an interesting theory that they might have felt the need to ‘hold back’ on SE, but I don’t think it holds up. They buffed it just before removing the double pop from KR.

Personally, I don’t think they’ll ever do anything much further to SE, as engineer already has plenty of other party support, other than direct healing. (This is their reasoning I believe, not mine.)

Anybody tried to kill the toads?

I’m not certain, but I believe only the nearer toads are in range of the gems.

Pretty sure the only way to hit some of the further back ones is to venture into the acidic goop. Probably drain you of your potions real quick, and that’s assuming you could hit some of them with the platforms blocking the gem’s path.

Binding 'dodge-jump' on programmable mouse?

in Super Adventure Box

Halcyon.7352

I’d attempted this ‘dodge jump’ for some time, but never got the hang of it, or even felt I needed it. (I have the Distinction in Applied Jumping title, and I never used it).

My mouse also has the two side buttons often used for page up/down or forward/back in browsers… I’ve had one bound to dodge forever, and I decided to bind the other to jump.

I discovered quite accidentally how to reliably dodge jump this way.

LIST of Chest Drops: Named Weapons

Since Ancient Karka chest is (for some reason) on this list, add Serpentstone (mace), Super Hyperbeam Alpha (RIfle) and Ruinmaker (PIstol).

So far no named exotic weapons from world chests here. And I’ve done a lot. Do have a few armor peices though.

Defend Pact Engineers (Malchor's Leap)

Has this event changed recently? I’ve seen a lot of dead players here lately.

I attempted this event solo on my engi about a month ago. Bursted down the trebs immediately, cleared the mobs, and started reviving the second engineer when things started respawning, coincidentally, also when an elementalist had wandered in to help.

Didn’t seem too difficult with two.

4 kit build advice

in Engineer

Halcyon.7352

Just hot-swap Power Wrench for Static Discharge (extra damage) or Packaged Stimulants (extra healing etc on the run) when running with the Bomb Kit.

Static Discharge won’t be much use since all 4 of his toolbelt skills are non-targeted at that point, and I don’t really see how Packaged Stimulants would be much help, if anything it makes it more annoying to heal yourself, which leaves, uh….. Kit Refinement lol.

Even non targeted Static DIscharges can hit, if you’re at point blank. Not reliably, but… I’d still take it over KR. Even with zero added power, that’s something like 170 damage per bounce, more if it crits.

Not sure how Stimulants equates to extra healing, though.

Known issue.

It’s been like this even after the attempted SB block fix a month or two ago.

Brenda seemingly can get unstuck, even without a restart. I’ve seen it happen before. But I have no idea how or why.

I’m at about chest 250.

I looted a scepter 8 hours before reset. Then after reset, I looted a sword on my first run. On my third run, I looted a sword and a greatsword. I am now rich. Thank you SAB.

On that note. I’ve never looted any skin from the chest in the 3rd zone. Never. Has any one else?

I had the same question a few posts up. The very next day I looted a greatsword from it.

As someone who started out as an Engineer, I think the only other class that is in par in the “fun department” would be a D/D Ele. The best way I can describe the play style is being ADD on a caffeine rush and then being given some matches.

Matches…? Hope I don’t live anywhere near you.

But yeah, I understand what you mean. I want to like using S/D for the support it offers but D/D is just so much more fun and engaging…

Please explain HGH build to me please.

Going HGH assures that you have full boon duration from traits.

There are other ways to obtain might stack as well: Sigil of Battle, Enhance Performance, Rune of Altruism and Lyssa.

By simply activating my medkit (or much more rarely, Elixir H) in combat, I instantly get 9-10 stacks of might. That’s without using a single elixir.

Is engineer the best class in your opinion?

in Engineer

Halcyon.7352

Also, what weapon set do you use on your engineers?

This is entirely dependent on what you want to do. Pistol/Pistol offers excellent condition damage. Change the second pistol out for a shield for some control and support. P/P P/S also offers two sigils versus Rifle’s single.

Rifle is best for direct damage (power) builds, and offers some degree of control as well. (Don’t underestimate that net shot).

If you plan on playing engineer, please don’t forget that kits more or less equate to another weapon set/skill. Many people don’t understand why Engineer has no weapon swap. It’s because we already have potential access to up to as many as 20 (not including medkit) weapon skills at any time, and that doesn’t even count the utility belt skills.

Multikit builds have suffered nerfs recently, regrettably. But kits are still fairly essential to almost any engineer.
