As long as they can keep the majority of players happy with better gear to work for, they can take all the time they need with new features. It gave them some much needed breathing room.

Not sure if serious.

Uh huh, and that way of thinking is why so many MMORPGs boom at the start, then quickly die out and just become another game on the list of games people quit.

But that’s the downside to the F2P model that most people don’t realize. Even though you’re not paying a subscription, they’re still going to find a way to get that same money from you. All they’re doing is marketing the cost in a different way.

Agreed, but I think plenty of people get what’s going on. I prefer subs, because you have a chance at more transparency and less ulterior motive/mysterious ways. FtS… Free to sub, everyone can try it out (HUGE) for free to see if they like, then pay a sub from there. If you like it $15 a month is cheap gaming.

This whole thing where many complain about having to desub and resub, is that what we call hard work these days?

In the Manifesto, ArenaNet said, “We don’t want players to grind”.

Later, Mike O’Brien said, “We don’t make grindy games”.

I’m not sure if everyone understood those comments. Some people imagined a “required” word in those statements that simply isn’t there.

And how do you make a MMO that is not focused on grind?

You make grind unrewarding so it’s not worth doing.

I get your point, but it breaks the rule that “everyone is different” and doesn’t take those differences into account. DR to some means doubling up the farming effort, double your farming fun! Just sayin…

But at least a lottery is called a lottery.

This game was not advertised as rng2win.

A rose by any other name is still the same.

But that isn’t the meaning of what is being said.

How is it not? He said that “atleast a lottery is called a lottery.”

Hence my quote.

Because he added another line and the meaning is affected by that. This is all a symptom of the change in loot progression, if it didn’t matter statistically, I bet there would be less of a concern about drops. The lottery posts odds, we have and will never have the odds tables for drop loots in game. One is transparent, the other closely guarded and mysterious, that is another difference.

Their “client” is any player with a wallet (all of them). They’re in it for the moolah, and doing what they can to make us pay them for their hard work (or lack thereof, etc). RNG sucks, but it does in RL too. I’ve never heard about people complaining that the odds of winning the lottery are too low, even though they constantly, consistently dump wads of cash into it and gain (often) nothing in return. Such is the roll of the dice.

Lottery you know the odds, understand it’s a utterly hopeless long shot, one dollar for millions in return and REAL money. Totally different than a game imo, much different. Tons of games do RNG, but it’s a small list of RNG, that list from top to bottom, the goods are close in value and not usually something worth 1 cp to something worth 400gp. This game is like the entire loot table is open for roll on every drop. Except that one dungeon where it has things the other 99.999% of the game doesn’t have.

I’m not debating the fact that the RNG in this game is terrible; I never was. I’m simply saying that expecting randomness to be anything but random is foolish and a waste of time.

“RNG sucks, but it does in RL too. I’ve never heard about people complaining that the odds of winning the lottery are too low, even though they constantly, consistently dump wads of cash into it and gain (often) nothing in return.”

People don’t complain about the real lottery because it’s not virtual made-up cash, it’s real. Every dollar goes to the pot, there is no magic etc. The odds have to be sky high because in the end the money has to be there and face it, people want the huge payout, which makes the odds crazy. Numbers wise it’s the same, but how it plays out and expectations, is just a totally different thing between the two, imo of course.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Horrorscope.7632

It is a long and complex topic, but the simple truth is: I don’t ever want to play an MMO again where i feel i need to play in order to stay equal in power to others.
It doesn’t matter if it’ only 1%, or only in PVE, or only this or only that.

It’s also very simple as you state. You have to think 98% of the players that will ever play GW2 will not be dedicated to having the best of everything and do everything. That is why there is a real need and appreciation for true vertical progression. I’ve asked for separate timed servers over the years, so a working man can somewhat keep pace. But true vertical progression you don’t even need that. Somehow multiplayer FPS’s can do this out of necessity of balance and it works.

Champs Dropping Loot (Nov 15th Patch)

Horrorscope.7632

From Nov 15th notes:

“The drop rarity of Rare and Exotic weapons from certain places in the world (champions, veterans, and players in WvW) has been increased. Rares and Exotics should be much more likely to drop and every champion should be guaranteed to drop loot. This was to ensure that world loot drops were not a significantly worse way of acquiring rare and exotic items than crafting and running dungeons.”

Why hasn’t this happened, been fixed or explained to us? Not trying to be a k.i.t.t.e.n. here, but this is pretty black and white. The notes and that this hasn’t happened and hasn’t been addressed, I believe.

“Should be guaranteed” is a bit tricky wording, but I read that is “It should drop, we want this to happen, if not it’s a bug, please report and we’ll re-address that until it does work”.

they explicitly lied about game updates champions guaranteed to drop loot with higher probability of rare/exotic drops overall…LIES

I swore I read that to and this one does bother me. First it would be great if they did, they should. But I don’t get how one states this will happen and then it doesn’t. No follow up word, no quick fix or any fix now. I really don’t get this one at all, to the point for a while there we made fun of it, after we killed a champ, “got your chest? You bet”… That joke even grew old, almost to the point where I was questioning that this was ever stated in a patch note.

The other is how the best goodies are all stuck in one dungeon .0001% of the game. As if there is some mini-revolt going on within Anet, so someone just said “ok, we’ll watch this!”, then proceeded to do one of the dumber things you could figure and it’s been that way for going on a month now.

Tell me about it. I’m Level 7 and have yet to see another human player on Metrica Province! I’ll give it one more try tonight and then I’m giving up. This is my first MMO and I was not expecting an online singleplayer game! I’ll probably never try another MMO again due to this bad experience. I mean, how come nobody else on the Blackgate server is leveling? Is everyone here max level already? No one is leveling an alt? No one just started playing this game recently but me?

I don’t know but you reasoning overall sounds really really sound. Even though I feel zone population is a bit thin over on Maguma, I never go without seeing others, far from that. But I wouldn’t suggest changing servers, I like your definitiveness," my first and if I don’t never again" mentality. Keep the standards high!

When every fractal run gives you 1-3 golds, a reasonable chance at an exotic and a veritable downpour of blues and greens as well as huge silver drops, why would you farm anywhere else? They have massively imbalanced the rewards between fractals and the open world.

I get more loot from 1 fractal run than a couple of hours in the open world and 10x as much as what I would get at a Claw of Jormag event.

They need to fix champion loot so people actually travel the world looking for DEs (and therefore champion bosses).

Tonight there was a noticeable change in loot dropped in the open world. Sure I need to run a few more days, but 2 exotics, 1 ecto, 2 dye’s, 2 Black Lion Keys and other decent loot for about 2 hours running level 70 Open World content. That’s definitely looking up.

I still think it shows proper trends. It doubled because of one reason, Wintersday. So no matter the real total # for GW’s, a lot more comeback for the new content. Does that surprise anyone? If XFire was worthless it would have shown a flat line or a loss when new content was added, it nearly doubled, makes sense.

I hated heroes and henchies in GW1. Especially heroes. Turned the MMO part of the game into single player and drove me away from GW1 PvE. Would hate to see them in GW2.

Overall I agree with that, that is why open world is the way to move GW2 forward, things you don’t need groups or henchies for.

Your expectations are completely unrealistic. You want every zone to be packed with players doing leveling events, yet name one MMO that has this. Even the most popular MMO of all time has completely dead and empty zones for most of your leveling experience.

Not that you are speaking to me, but it’s a LOT closer to being possible then you are giving the possibility credit for.

One the “packed with players” could happen if they had everyone playing GW2 able to be in the same zone together and overflow from there. (Like GW1)

Games like SWOTR or DCUO went to “mega-server” technology and it really helps making areas feel much more alive. GWs 2 could easily be that imo and boom right there, tons of people in all zones.

Next to make zones for an 80 to go back to. They have good downscalling now (could be tweaked a little) all they need is resources to be in those zones they need and boom, they will come.

Finally, like Wintersday, have special events and bigger DE’s that are Zone-cific and rotate them day to day. Wintersday is the first time I have a reason to see other cities in the game.

You put all those together, remove dungeons and you will have by far the greatest open world mmo ever created and that is something a lot of people wanted. When you go to mmo sites and lay out their dreams, this is a very common one. They’ve fixed several things I hated about open world.

or
3. Scale instances to group size.
or
4. At the very least get a LFG Tool, this game seems so 1960’s with how it tries to group people.

My apologies, I didn’t know the link/score given here was to the Single Core Benchmark. I’m pretty in tune with looking at the number and just knowing, vs total processor speed. 1000 would suck for total. Your CPU is 3000+ total, that will run it pretty well. I have one Q6600 25% weaker then the AMD, it runs pretty well. Larger PvP battles it will be stressing. A overall CPU score approaching 9000 would be ideal.

Big lie. I run Q6600 and it doesnt not run well in pvp or overall. Or if u consider 30-35max fps good. Ofc u get good fps if u look at the ground.

I get 40’s, I consider that pretty well, which I dunno means well often, but sometimes not so much. I stated in PvP is will stress. I have a slower dual, that I would say bothers me, it’s more of a 30 fps and it would die in large PvP, I am wanting to upgrade that unit for sure. This game is a pig. So take your big lie and tone it down sparky.

Forumers in the Minority?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Horrorscope.7632

This has been asked and said over and over.

Boil it down to this… They know if the game is being played less and by how much. If it’s slanting downward enough, then see what’s up in the forums, since you will get a lot of ideas and what’s wrong there. As for forumer’s and non-forumers, forumers are like voters that really vote, so they do get some credit simply by showing up and the silent majority, losses a little by being on the sideline, that is why I think you look at playing metrics, if the numbers are very healthy, you can shrug off the negatvie.

My gut, they have a boat load of things on their list to do, so our feedback to them is about a incomplete game. There is this large list of things coming, that really finishes out GW’s to them, so feedback right now is from an unfinished game. They have the big picture, they know where the game will be, we do not.

To me this game was rushed out, my guess by an entity that controls the money, surprise! Not saying it was a disastrous decision, the game is very playable and can be a lot of fun, but there were a lot of unfinished/rough edges as well and it sounds like we are approaching spring to get things in, I think they wanted to have at release.

Do you like dungeons better or open world?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Horrorscope.7632

Horrorscope.7632

I can enjoy both, but in this game it is an very easy choice. Open World, they have the proper setup that gives you a vision of how Open World can really work for a MMO today. I wasn’t sure if that was just wishful thinking until I played this game.

Dungeons in this game actually are detrimental to it in two major ways, then resources going towards making dungeons better, could be spent adding more to the team making open world better. And it gets people out of the Open World and into the dungeons, putting up silo’s and making Open World feel more barren then it should.

I am also one that feels Zones should be servers, where anyone in GW’s 2 can get to anyone, no matter their Home Server. As Zones hit their max population, then you go to overflows. I think with this mechanic, Open World would always feel very alive.

GW’s 2 falls into the Jack of All Trades master of none, having 4 different paths: Open/Dungeon/WvWvW and sPvP. That alone to me kills their e-sport hopes. I do have a hard time saying sPvP should go…. But I think the game would be better served focused on Open World and WvWvW, I think that is where GW2 magic lies. If culling/performance for WvWvW can’t be fixed, then I could be talked into Open World/sPvP/gPvP.

From Aion, to Rift, to DC Universe Online, to Lord of the Rings Online, to Age of Conan, all the way to SWTOR, I haven’t been able to play it past getting to level cap.

I’m very similar, instead of cap, I try to see the majoriy of content, usually that is a little past cap. I call it a game and move on, there has yet to be such an awesome game to me that I can just give it all up and live just on that. I am one that does come back for content updates if I like the game a lot.

What level 5 zone are you going to that has anything even remotely worth it for a level 80?

All of them, it’s called playing with a friend. The way this game was designed (unless they are going back on that to) was for true down-scaling, one big reason was to sidekick with others, but we are too strong and it takes away from the friends enjoyment. It’s so simple. This was something that was different vs other mmo’s. It’s not supposed to be a face-roll, it’s not supposed to make you feel like you are getting stronger. It was to allow you to play all content in the game at any point and you have a leveled challenge. It’s so very simple, wanting it where you are mighty is lazy on our behalf, it wasn’t supposed to be like that.

You totally missed the point.

I get your point, but looked at is a narrow. The reason I would go back would be to play with a friend. Nothing to do about farming for better stuff for my 80, yes people like me do exist.

In general I do like the wider PoV, however I have one unit I ran in the lower PoV view as a narrower PoV is less demanding on the computer. (~10 fps with my one unit)

I wanted to give a heads up to those that say “Since patch such and such my performance has dropped”. In this case whenever the PoV standard was changed, you did lose FPS because of that, it was a choice Anet made. I’m not sure anyone has surrendered that as a reason why you dropped frames.

I’m with you on the servers, in hind-sight it looks like this would have been a better plan.

Each zone is a server, when you go to a Zone, lets say Queensdale, everyone in GWs’2 is on that server zone. When you hit the player limit for the zone, it goes to an overflow server for that zone, there could then be several overflows. This would make it more like GW’s 1, with one world server.

This way all players from all servers would be able to play together and I bet if you bunched them all up like that, all zones would be alive for a looong time to come, several would have overflows 24/7.

Horrorscope.7632

I think it’s fine as it is. If you felt just as weak in downscaled areas as you do in areas at your core level, the game wouldn’t have much of a sense of power progression. If I go back to an area that’s 40 levels lower, I don’t want to go around one-shotting everything but at the same time I do want to feel quite a bit stronger there than I was 40 levels ago. Besides, you only get about half the rewards from events. It’s nice since you can kind of choose the difficulty you want when you play and get appropriate bonuses. If everything was the same difficulty it would be super lame.

… not to mention there’s nothing stopping you from stripping your armour off and going commando if you want a challenge.

I was defending the idea but yeah, I gotta agree to this guy.

It becomes a mini-grief situation. I’ve noticed people don’t want to be around me when I’m down-scaling a lot as I go fro 100%. So I do agree and it can work in some situations to put on lower level armor/weapons, but not everyone will and can be used to grief some even unknowingly. Where if the system just down leveled more inline with true level, you take both micro-managing gear and a possible grief situation away.

It is one of those situations, where if it was just spot on to being with it wouldn’t be questioned and well you were told what is was doing. Now we feel power and don’t want to give it up.

I feel too powerful as a lvl 80 going into a low level area

Buying new computer - need WvW + CPU advice

So. I’m buying a new computer and I can’t decide on CPU. I want my WvW to run smooth in big battles. I was thinking of buying Intel i5 3570 and probably Radeon 7850 2gb (if that matters).

I would go 7950 or 660ti for VC. If you are getting a new system, you may as well pair it up a little better between CPU and GPU. You might not see it in GW2, but in other games you will and you don’t want to buy a new pc and then have to upgrade anything in the near future. 7850 is a little on the low end for the 3570.

to downscale ever further you first need a reason to go back to those low level zones and there’s none.

There are two:

100% map completion.
Play with an under leveled friend.

Nuka is correct, there’s no reason to go back. It takes maybe an hour or two (at most) to complete a low level map as an 80. Once that’s done, there’s no reason to go back.

Sure, some people will help an low level friend, but really, even on level most of those maps are soloable with the occasional need for a little assistance on a Skill Point or something. But even going to help a friend is a pain because it’s less time the 80 is earning level-appropriate rewards.

I’m happy to help sometimes, but I need to progress towards my goals as well at level 80 and I can’t do that by looting level 20 or 30 blues. So time spent in low level zones is basically charity.

I was speaking in general. You maybe happy to help sometimes, it’s not always about because it’s easy you should just solo it. Some people just want to be with another a do something. When you get a level 20 and 60 together, the 60 is a bit too powerful. The purpose of down scaling doesn’t have to be debated, it just has to do what it’s intents were, if you are down scaled to far either way, it isn’t doing what was planned as well as it should.

I believe that down-scaling should be very near equal and those down-scaling should get drops for their true level. To me that was the vision, that is win win.

As for map completion there should still be many maps that aren’t complete when you hit 80, when scaled right those should take more then a couple hours each.

The game was supposed to be designed this way, since it was, since it makes sense, we shouldn’t be asking for a free ride down-leveling and/or ruining it a bit for true level players in the area.

My wife and I did not receive the chest in mail. I see lots you people who did event but didn’t loot chest getting theirs, that’s great! I see some people who did event but didn’t get chest and still got no mail chest that’s not great ;‘( I see people who didn’t even log on that whole event or participate at all getting the mail that’s bs but lucky for then “gz”!
I see some got chest during event and getting another, that’s complete and utter BS, they got their chest already why they get another!

Sounds like they have a pretty sound query there, know?
