I See No Tomorrow.7302

As folks have said, the block feature is there if you don’t like what people are talking about. But how you could be offended by people talking about their religious beliefs is beyond me.

The atheist movement that is based upon “god doesn’t exist cause science haha stupid believers” is nothing but a ridiculous group of people with a superiority complex. Reducing religion to “I believe in God” or “I believe in many Gods” or “I believe the world to exist in this manner” is intentionally missing the point of religion. Religion is much more than just believing in God or whatnot. In fact, many religious people accept that the stories and such that they tell are not to be taken literally. Spirituality, culture, belief, and community are far more than some atheists reduce it to. And yes, religious folks can be scientists. They’re not mutually exclusive. The artificial “battle” between religion and science is ridiculous and pointless.

I’m not religious myself but I have the utmost respect for all faiths. I have little respect for people who get offended that other people have religious beliefs. What are they doing to you? Are you afraid you might start believing in God? The only thing I can’t stand are missionary faiths when they try to convert people. If folks are doing that in-game then I’d say it’s time to take action and block them or whatever. GW2 is not a missionary platform for people to spread their faith. Many atheists act similarly to missionary faiths and go about complaining about religious people and pointing out how they disagree with parts of the religion that isn’t even the most important part of the religion. If anybody ought to be shut up in religious conversations, it’s atheists.

We know that it’s more than three maps, and I’m pretty sure each map has three biomes. It’s an entire new Area, like Ascalon, or the Shiverpeaks, or Kryta. The Heart of Maguuma.
I’d guess 5-6 maps total? Most areas apart from the Maguuma Wastes have around that many maps (and the Maguuma Wastes is just two maps for the free living story).

So quick question: I believe many people were already signed up for the original Guild Wars 2 newsletter thing that’s been telling us about the thrilling upcoming Living Story episodes for ages. This is the same newsletter as the Heart of Thorns newsletter, correct? Or is there confirmation that the HoT website is separate?

Cause when you go to sign up for the HoT newsletter it says:

Subscribed but not receiving emails from Guild Wars 2?
Please check your spam folder, or add guildwars2@ncsoft.com to your address book. If you need additional help, please visit our Support site.

So I assume they’re the same newsletter. That would explain the phenomenon of some people “not being able to sign up” because they don’t re-receive a confirmation email for a newsletter they’re already signed up for.

I want that mesmer specialization tbh

I’m sure they’ll come up with something creative! Sometimes the updates are bigger than other times but it’s sure to be amusing either way. Let’s look at their previous updates:

  • 2014: Bobble heads
  • 2013: SAB
  • 2012: More commando quests for GW1
  • 2011: Commando profession reveal + commando quests for GW1
  • 2010: Players became mini-sized, minis became player-sized in GW1
  • 2009: Everyone turned into Gwen-chan in cities in GW1
  • 2008: Everyone turned into stick figures in cities in GW1
  • 2007: Reversed character genders in cities in GW1, became the inspiration for buying a “Total Makeover” and the eventual inclusion of this option in GW2’s Total Makeover Kit

So whatever it is, it’ll be fun.

Blood or Corruption - Scarlet & Mordy

in Lore

Posted by: I See No Tomorrow.7302

I See No Tomorrow.7302

sigh and thus the thread becomes about which sources are canon and which are not. This was a fairly simple question folks, and thus far few people have attempted to answer, with some folks merely referencing something without sharing anything definitive about their opinion.

Here’s what I’ll say: Scarlet certainly looks like she’s wilting, with the blackened skin around the back of her head. But then again, we’ve never before seen a depiction of a dead sylvari up close like this while not in the overworld (where wilting would be difficult/impossible to implement). So my question remains: while she does seem like she’s wilting, is it possible that those lines on her face are the beginning of visible Mordremoth corruption or merely a depiction of glowing sylvari blood? I question the idea that it’s blood because I don’t know if it’s been established that it’s that bright or that it glows.

Why the hints of Cantha?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: I See No Tomorrow.7302

I See No Tomorrow.7302

So while it’s true that references to Cantha don’t exactly indicate that we’ll be going to Cantha, you have to admit that within the Guild Wars universe what we in real life consider to be “Asian-themed” is actually Canthan-themed. So while it’s true that we won’t be going to Cantha itself in the foreseeable future, please at least admit that these things are definitely aspects of Canthan culture. To deny that is just silly, since everything in-game at least attempts to follow the lore of the game.

I See No Tomorrow.7302

in the short story " what scarlet saw" after ceara is awoken by omadd she begins to glow red, and a small thorny vine wraps itself between her fingers, personally I’m hoping that this was evidence of Mordremoth beginning to gain influence over her, even if said influence was unconcious and neither party was aware of it, its quite possible that as scarlett descended into madness she realized that she was being corrupted and created her armor in an attempt to slow it down or hide it from those around her

Aye, I was thinking it was a possibility that she was wearing the helmet to hide potential visible corruption.

According to Ghosts of Ascalon, sylvari begin to wilt almost immediately after death.

Oh interesting, I never got around to reading any of the books, sadly. Would you say that Scarlet is “wilting” at the beginning of that cutscene, then? Is there ever any description of what wilting would look like?

Blood or Corruption - Scarlet & Mordy

in Lore

Posted by: I See No Tomorrow.7302

I See No Tomorrow.7302

So quick question about corrupted sylvari appearance and sylvari blood.

1. We know sylvari blood is like sap. Yep.
2. We have met sylvari who are influenced by Mordy but don’t show signs of visible corruption.
3. We killed Scarlet.

When Scarlet attacked Lion’s Arch and then the player character and misc friends boarded the Breachmaker, Scarlet was wearing a helmet. We can assume the player character took it because we get the actual physical helmet as a reward for the instance.

Then we get the cutscene. Scarlet looks like this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/e/e6/Scarlet_Dead.jpg in the cutscene, good and dead. The real question I’m asking here is: the glowing lines running from her neck and onto her face and head, is that blood or is that Mordremoth’s corruption? I always assumed it was blood, but now I’m not so sure.

Just a quick question. I personally don’t know either way.

Revenant Starting Area [Possible Spoilers]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: I See No Tomorrow.7302

I See No Tomorrow.7302

The only reason that Rits and Dervishes etc got a different starting area was because anybody who started in Factions and Nightfall would start in their campaign’s respective starter area. It wasn’t dependent upon profession.

On topic, I doubt that Revenants would get a different starter area. They’ve said that they’ll start at level 1 like everyone else, and yes somebody was completely correct in saying that it’s only the Race decisions that have an effect upon the Personal Story. Things like an Engineer’s backpack and a Guardian’s shoulder pauldrons have no effect on the story, so whatever Revenant has will likewise have no effect on the story.

It’s true that the first Revenant we know about is Rytlock, and the possible lore contradiction of having a Revenant fighting Zhaitan, but since they won’t make an entirely brand new Personal Story reserved for only Revenants (remember this is only an expansion, not a stand alone campaign), it looks like Revenants will be going through the same Personal Story as everyone else.

I wouldn’t say it contradicts lore since Dervs and Rits are able to go back and do missions in early Proph.

And it’s only a profession. Having a revenant going through the personal story is hardly lore breaking since professions has no effect upon it.

I'm a little angry.

I See No Tomorrow.7302

The personal story is a neat little package with not much choice in it, its goal is more to tell the story of Tyria than the story of your character.

However, I can say with certainty that if you were to join the roleplaying community, joining the Nightmare court is possible and with fewer bounds than a built-in storyline. Problem is that roleplaying in this game is hit or miss most of the time with quality.

But to be honest, the Nightmare court is full of cruelty, pain, superiority complexes, suffering, petty vengeance, greed, violence, pointless murder, torture, etc. for one reason: because they can. Because they were told not to by the Tree. That doesn’t really sound compelling to me. There’s no good reason to introduce such negative elements anywhere, so their existence in my opinion is pointless and a perfect example of pure evil malice with no purpose.

It was fairly simple for me to get as well but I don’t think we should be bashing OP just because the signals were more difficult to understand for them.

The battle was unlike most other types of battles we encounter in GW2, so it’s understandable that the mechanics aren’t immediately obvious to everybody. I personally try to connect the dialog in the text box with absolutely anything happening in the circle arena, and once I made the connections I understood what was going on. Maybe I was trained by the Liadri battle and other Queen’s Gauntlet battles to stand in the fire to be able to harm the enemy. I dunno. But as this particular battle hasn’t existed before, I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s a Learn to Play issue.

I would recommend paying attention to dialog and everything going on in the arena in unusual battles, they usually explain themselves. Personally I believe all the info is there in-game.

Yeah, okay, we don’t have Magdaer. Minor detail. I’m sure his ghost copy will be enough.

Pretty sure that Adelbern didn’t go to the Mists after death, but instead his spirit was bound by the Foefire to remain in Tyria until the ghosts could be banished. So I don’t think we’d be able to channel old Addle-brain.

By the way, Anet has added a total of three maps (for free) to GW2 over the few years it’s been released. HoT will have more than three maps if it’s a paid for expansion, I can guarantee it.

The “three maps” rumor originated from the fact that each new map will have three different sections to them: top layer, middle layer, and bottom layer (canopy, ground, underground). So essentially however many maps they do end up having will be more like that number x3 as each new map will have basically three maps in it.

how can it be allies when there is ONLY 1 mursaat left?

The mursaat betrayed all the other races, which is why the dragons were able to come back. so glint made the flameseeker prophecies were the titans came down to destroy the mursaat (which the heros of gw1 helped to fulfill) and only lazarus survived because he locked his power away in trinkets so he wasnt a mursaat anymore. the people who had the trinkets died when lazarus took them back, so justicar naveed went into hiding so that lazarus couldn’t fully resurect, and so lazarus wouldnt kill him.

so i can see lazarus finding the last trinket to restore himself, and assisting the destruction of the dragons, but since only 1 is left, how can their be more than 1 in gw2?

There was 1 mursaat left…as far as the White Mantle, asura, and Krytan humans knew. It was never confirmed that there weren’t more of them hanging out in their main city, not involved in Krytan-charr politics.

Working with others without any competition is fantastic, and Guild Wars 2 overall has more opportunities to do this regularly.

Back in GW1 I did some Alliance Battles and Fort Aspenwood PvP area very rarely. It wasn’t very satisfying, but it was certainly more interesting than Guild Wars 2 PvP. There’s something about being able to see skill activation stop after casting Blackout, then swiping away with an IW mesmer that just doesn’t exist in GW2.

Sylvari are people as much as Glint is a person. Experimenting on Glint is wrong because she is a sentient free willed creature. The same is true of the sylvari.

This anti-sylvari sentiment is getting ridiculous. They’re not pre-programmed. They don’t lack free will. Sylvari actively KILL mordrem and have KILLED the Shadow of the Dragon both in the Dream and in reality. No other dragon minions kill dragon minions of the same type.

Sons of Svanir kill norn women turned into icebrood, but Sons of Svanir are not icebrood. They are not corrupted yet.

Kralk killed Glint only after Glint became free.

Sylvari are free-willed and anti-Mordremoth and anti-other dragons. Just because they can be corrupted doesn’t make them a target any more than the fact that charr can become branded or asura can become risen.

Sylvari hate isn’t edgy or cool, it’s just silly.

It’s a mursaat, the helm shape is the same as those in GW1, albeit a bit larger. It looks like the mursaat went through a bit of a redesign, with the feathers being more like streamers than stiff pieces coming out of their back. Saul D’Alessio is said to have found a city of golden towers when he encountered the mursaat. This fits everything we saw in the trailer.

It’s not a margonite. It’s not a seer (they have more arms). It’s not Palawa Joko, he doesn’t fly and lives in Elona. The druids look like Oakhearts. The Kurzicks live in Cantha. Their architecture is entirely different. The Sidhe are entirely unrelated and their concept art looks nothing like the mursaat in the trailer.

EDIT: from Saul’s first encounter with the mursaat: “They were tall and thin with strange wing-like appendages that waved about in the slightest breeze. When they walked, their feet seemed not to touch the ground” this fits the trailer description more accurately than the depiction of mursaat in GW1, even

Only once the Elder Dragons started stirring, did the Norn and Asura appear, however, they’re also established races and their origin isn’t completely random and in the middle of existing empires.

So are you talking from a player perspective or an in-world perspective?

From a player perspective I’ve loved the sylvari since they were announced in 2007, the same year that asura and norn were introduced as well.

From an in-world perspective, the sylvari appeared, were attacked by the asura out of ignorance, then went on to contribute helpfully throughout Tyria to various causes.

So yeah, I’d say that sylvari hate is unfounded.

Agreed, though there are reasons to hate certain Sylvari. The Nightmare Court and those who join pirates.

The Nightmare Court perform more attacks against other sylvari than they do members of other races. Their goal is to turn the Pale Tree, so hurting other races doesn’t really help. Hate the Nightmare Court, not the sylvari.

There are pirates of every race, hah

I wasn’t saying for people to love every sylvari ever, I’m just saying a hate of the entire race is a little silly.

On the real though I am excited as hell to see where this goes even if I am conflicted in my feelings about how people can turn on a whole race… omg… Stoppit tears.

Just because sylvari were “supposed” to be dragon minions, doesn’t make them dragon minions now. The player character is just as unaffected by Mordy whether they are sylvari, asura, norn, human, or charr.

The fact that they’re more easily corruptable by Mordy is not a basis for other people to hate them any more than the fact that charr can become branded.

They’re playable characters, and if you’ve been doing this season as a sylvari it’s very clear that the sylvari PC are just as unaffected by Mordy as the human PC, asura PC, etc.

The anti-sylvari sentiment, while over a fictional race in a fictional world, is unfounded. Charr tried to wipe out humans, and humans tried to wipe out charr, and I don’t see either of those races as hated as the sylvari, who only boast Canach, Scarlet, and Aerin as characters performing evil acts against members of other races. And Canach is turning over a new leaf (ha ha).

If anything, sylvari suffer more from other sylvari than other races have ever suffered from the sylvari, due to the Nightmare Court.

So yeah. Sylvari hate is unfounded, this doesn’t justify hate just cause people personally don’t like some sylvari.

The game takes place between 1325-1328 AE. Please explain how aging three years can make a child an adult.

For non-lore reasons, I also disagree with this suggestion only because it is both impractical and unnecessary. The amount of work to texture and armor children, not to mention all of the other issues with children being in dangerous situations, as well as the additional voice acting, a revamp of the personal story (a kid is not going to be able to save Shaemoor or take on ancient Ascalonian ghosts, for example), the lack of sylvari being part of this system (they are full-grown and essentially naive adults when born), as well as implementing an aging system, etc etc

For a different game, one built new from the ground up, playing from a child to an adult could be feasible and could even be fun. But this is Guild Wars 2, an established MMO of a little over two years old. This kind of design change would be something to take place far before reaching the public. Sorry, but no.

Well it’s not a costume, in GW1 when norn “become the bear” they become a bear that stands on its hind legs. Same with the other transformations, although we haven’t seen many other than Bear before GW2.

In other words, when norn “become” an animal, they aren’t literally transforming into that animal, they are channeling the nature of the Spirit into their own physical form and frame.

Although transforms into actual animals would be interesting if implemented properly.

Why do female Sylvari have boobs ?

in Sylvari

Posted by: I See No Tomorrow.7302

I See No Tomorrow.7302

Breasts are a secondary sex characteristic in humans who experience the hormone estrogen more than testosterone. So are wider hips and slightly fairer skin.

Wide shoulders and rougher skin are secondary sex characteristics of humans who experience testosterone more than estrogen.

Essentially, if sylvari are based off of Ronan’s family, then the Tree figured out the chemical and genetic make up of humans, in addition to anything gleaned through any magical processes. The existence of secondary sex characteristics in sylvari does not seem unusual, as these are results not of a requirement of reproduction but of chemical exposure.

Sylvari sex organs exist purely for recreation and pleasure, like the majority of real-life human sexual interactions. Just because they cannot reproduce does not mean that they cannot have sex organs. In fact, since we cannot see their genitals, I would argue that every sylvari could possibly have different genitals than what we’d assume to be correct and we’d never know.

Based on my understanding of the lore, that’s exactly what it is. Without that, there’s no reason for Sylvari to not just be all “male”.

“Male” is not the default form of humanoid species, “child” is. The “Male” form and the “Female” form both have secondary sex characteristics. It is silly and sexist to assume that “Male” is somehow more androgynous than “Female”.

EDIT: By the by, breasts are not sexual organs. The only truly sexual organs are the genitals. Also, since sylvari do not have nipples, I would argue that breasts are not even remotely sexual as erogenous zones. Yes all of the crystal holograms were silent except for the last one. The last one specifically had a voice over in it and I’m not talking about the forced couple that they throw our way every chance they get.

Lol they’re not any more forced than any other relationship in the game. D’you expect them to act like they’re just friends if they’re in a relationship? I don’t understand the hate so many people have.

On topic, I don’t recall ever hearing any voices during the Lair story.

You can get ascended armor chests from various sources, but that takes ages and isn’t very reliable.

Just as Kormir became a god in Abaddon’s stead, Rytlock will become an Elder Dragon in Zhaitan’s stead.

Joking aside, it’s interesting to think of what could happen with this.

Actually it was your own statement all along.
You are using your own statement to prove your point all along. Where did it state that ALL minions were unquestionably loyal in their mind rather than just being controlled? No proof at all. Especially the champions.

Bone dragons could simply be made of other corpses like the Risen Knight.

That’s not right, Kralkatorrik flew up years ago, if the eggs were corrupted at that time it would have been hatched, which makes no sense. Again where is your proof of this? You are using your own statement to prove your point here.

No, Eye of Zhaitan could also see through prisoner’s mind or even their dream as well. All known champions’ special power was given by their master.

Actually there’s a lot of proof in GW1 that undead dragons were not cobbled together, especially since there’s zero indication that they’re anything other than dragons pulled from the dead. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Decayed_Dragon the name indicates that it was a non-decayed dragon, and now it has decayed. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Scribe/20060713 talks about how Rotscale performs his own actions and raises other dragons from the dead, and reanimates corpses. Nothing is said about building new and unusual sets of bones.

The only corpses in GW1 that seem to be entirely cobbled together are the minions that necromancers create. Even the Scepter of Orr just raised corpses out of the ground.

You assume that dragon eggs hatch quickly. We don’t know anything about their life cycles.

Also, an alternative view of devourers and spiders and dragons that produce young while corrupted is not necessarily being pregnant beforehand, but having been an uncorrupted creature with the ability to reproduce before corruption.

Yeah it went a bit far. So let’s get back to the topic.

Zhaitan’s power does not just include raise undead, it could also rise a big continent. It totally makes sense if it could do this, or it could just use a lot of corpses to twist shape(many Risens’ shape was twisted) then form a dragon shape abomination like the other dragons use rock/ice/crystal/plants to form their dragon champions.

No matter did the dragons create or corrupt their champions, other than physical abilities, their main power were granted by their masters.
Great Destroyer-lava ability, command destroyers.
Shatterer-Crystal attacks
Eye of Zhaitan-see magic or minds, ray attacks
Mouth of Zhaitan- devour magic for Zhaitan, sound attacks
Undead dragons-Death and Shadow attacks
Nornbear-spirit skills
Drakkar-Mind abilities
Claw of Jormag-Ice attacks
Dragonspawn-Mind Abilities and turn into storm
Undead Captains-control the dead ships

Quite a few dragons gave their champions the ability to affect minds or see minds, Jormag and Zhaitan both did. So it’s safe to say that Glint’s power came from her master since Kralkatorrik does have ability to corrupt minds.

It’s true that he could do a bit more than just raise dead things, otherwise he’d just be a huge be-wing’d lich.

And yeah, Glint may have gotten some of her powers from Kralk, but before corruption she must’ve had free will, which is what people were arguing for. Her powers are up for discussion, but if she regained her free will, then she most likely had willpower before corruption.

If she’s feeling remorse at the time of killing towns and villages, she can’t do anything about it, hence her lack of free will. She was aware of what she was doing but could do little to stop it.

Then the forgotten step in and do some kind of ritual which frees her enough to be able to act upon her interpretations. As somebody who was forced to do so many things for so long, it probably took a bit to acclimate to the free will. But if she’s regained it, she had it in the first place.

Her exceptional powers were likely granted by Kralk, yes I agree.

words

The Dragonspawn and the Claw of Jormag were both simply created by Jormag. Some Icebrood was also just made of ice. So called “bones” on dragons were just part of the ice like the Dragonspawn’s “skull” and “spine”. The Shadow of Dragon was also made by Mord. The Great Destroyers. All the known Dragons were simply created by the Elder Dragons. So Zhaitan could simply split part of its power to create those dragons like the other Elder Dragons, remember itself was formed by countless “dragons”. All other dragons were created, unless we have hard evidence, then Glint was created as well. Also remember we don’t see her in GW2 , in GW1 the concept of the Elder Dragons weren’t created yet at least during Prophecies.

Also Kralkatorrik’s branded’s special ability mostly came from their master.

We do see Glint in a cinematic, and she’s very clearly the same as she was in GW1.

Zhaitan could clearly fall apart, but I don’t think it’s in his power to simply ‘create’ some littler dragons. He’d have to raise them. His powers were not the same as the other Elder Dragons, just like Primordus never actually seems to corrupt anything alive, just molten rock.

Also, to be fair, ANet has said that Kuunavang and Glint were very very different dragons. I would not say that means Glint was never an uncorrupted dragon.

I think it’s stretching things a bit too far to say that there were no other kinds of dragons apart from Elder Dragons and their champions, as you’re bending over backwards to show the exceptional evidence as untrue.

The burden of proof does not lie in our arguments, but also in yours. Where is the evidence that there were no dragons of any sort in continental Tyria? Everything seems to point to them existing before, with contrived ‘evidence’ supporting the lack of dragons.

If Rotscale was a bone dragon, and there were things like necrid horsemen who also used to be alive but were undead (not Risen), then weren’t there dragons around who would become Rotscale and the others?
