How’s your Server doing in WvW?

For obvious reasons, that’s the first thing to check when a stat mysteriously drops.

The OP mentioned “account” magic find, which is unaffected by WvW. It’s the one that displays when you visit the achievements tab of your [h]ero panel.

Naming Mordremoth

Illconceived Was Na.9781

In hindsight, there should have been more build up or discovery before reaching that point. Lesson learned.

This is what I was hoping to see.

Among my circle of friends, guildies, etc, I have been the biggest critic of how abrupt this reveal was (one of the most important in LS2 and perhaps for LS1, as well). I like the story and the rollout of LS2 — it shows just how much ANet has learned about gradually evolving the game environment through the LS (instead of abruptly via expansions). The naming of Mordremoth was, for me, the single sour note in an otherwise excellent symphony.

Thank you for explaining the background, acknowledging that you understand how the actual reveal came across, and most of all for being willing to change how we uncover lore, both critical (what/who we are fighting) and trivial (beggars in Prosperity).

Basic salvage kit salvage rate

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Just read my post above again. I don’t feel the need to repeat myself to pointless pedantic banter.

The point isn’t about language, it’s about whether ANet would be more swayed by quantitative rather than qualitative descriptions.

For example, I can confirm your gut feeling with the following data from 200 salvages of green armor L74-80.

  • I recovered 6 runes, an average rate of 3%.
  • The stated rate is “20% chance of recovering upgrades.” If true, I would expect to recover ~40 runes from 200 trials.

While 200 salvages isn’t enough to reliably determine the actual drop rate, it is enough to determine that the current drop rate is far less than 20%.

  • There less than a millionth of a percent chance I could get 6 or fewer runes in 200 tries, if the actual rate was 20%.
  • There’s a 1.4% chance of getting 6 or fewer runes, if the rate was 10%.
  • A 12.4% chance of 6 or fewer if the rate were 5%.

In other words, the actual rate isn’t 20%. There’s a small chance it’s 10%, but it’s more likely to be lower than 5%.

At best, the tool-tip is incorrect or misleading. At worst, the rate depends on salvage kit and on the target item, e.g. perhaps there’s one rate for Masterwork items and another for Rares or perhaps it depend on the level or type (armor vs weapon, etc).

Regardless of whether anyone else is seeing this, I urge you to open a support ticket now and let them start taking a loot at it. Presumably, there’s just some display issue that will be fixed by clearing your cache or something similar. But if it’s an actual bug, be good to get it to ANet’s attention ASAP.

For those folks who are sure that their 30th coin is the one that’s in the puddle that supplies water to the oasis, I would like to strongly encourage you to create a support ticket at https://help.guildwars2.com/anonymous_requests/new.

Include the time/date you first tried that one (to the best of your recollection).

If you are correct, and that one is bugged, submitting a report will give ANet some of the data they need to reproduce the issue (an almost-required step in resolving bugs). Further, Support would need a ticket to reset the coin, assuming that’s even possible for them or for a Dev.

And if it turns out that coin is not bugged, then I believe that support will be able to let you know, so you can turn your attention elsewhere.

In the meantime, tediously retracing your steps for all 30 might be the “quickest” way that you can discover the kittenish, final [sic] location. (And yes, I know that’s not “quick” in the least, having suffered through that myself for the Diving achievement.)

Good luck and please let us know how it turns out.

Really? this is bugged for a year and still no fix? I’m not receiving exotic chests and chests on the ground anymore because of this bug at Tequatl boss. Any reason why this wasn’t still fixed?

Seeing as how the last post in this thread (before yours) was “a year ago”, I don’t think it’s a case of it “still not being fixed”. Have you submitted a support ticket and all that?

Yes, couple of months ago when I had this problem and now when again I have this problem. A chance for Teq weapon is like 0,00001% and with this bug it’s an additional frustration.

I recommend that you create a support ticket:
https://help.guildwars2.com/anonymous_requests/new

The vast majority of people participating in WB fights (including Teq) receive their bonus chests as expected, so this doesn’t sound like a bug that is affecting the game.

The TP, a "philosophical" question.

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

In answer to the OP, yes, I find that the TP as currently structured is a good match for the kind of social system/philosophy the rest of the game is based on.

  • You play how you like (for the most part).
  • You can sell most of the stuff you can’t use on the TP for market rates.
  • You can buy most of the stuff you want or need on the TP for market rates.
  • You don’t have to care at all about the economy, because other people do that for you, including John Smith (in a role that few other games support) and including market players (whose actions end up removing a ton of gold from the game and also keep prices more even than they would be without a “free” market).

That’s pretty close to the ideal setup for the state of MMOs in 2014, in my opinion.

You bring up some good points.

I’d like to know what you mean with “(for the most part)”.

Thanks.

In response to your question, we can only play how we like “for the most part” in GW2:

  • If you want top-stats, you must learn to craft; you cannot get ascended armor without it.
  • If you want to unlock traits, you must do certain tasks (the same for every character you will ever play).

Thus, aside from a 3-5% stat bonus and maxing out your toon’s potential (traits), you will earn XP and gold by doing just about anything, outside of sneezing or reading the wiki. ANet only “forces” us towards certain content for skins and to see new stories unfold.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There is no evidence or proof provided here by anyone. The whole purpose of this thread is to alert ANET to a possible bug, which I hope we have now done.

The only people who know the truth are ANET when and if they look into this.

What I’m trying to explain is that there won’t be any reason for ANet to “look into this” until someone has shown them that there is a “this” to look in to.

Put another way, compare the two statements below and decide for yourself which would be more likely to get ANet’s attention:

  1. Over the last month, I don’t seem to be getting many runes/sigils when salvaging greens with Basic Kits. I don’t think I even had a lucky streak of recovering more upgrades than expected, never mind at least average.
  2. Over the last month, I salvaged 500 greens with a Basic Kit and recovered 50 upgrades, whereas I would have expected to see ~100 minor runes/sigils.

Guild main window

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Well, the bug with inventory window changing size itself (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Inventory-Window-changing-size-alone) has been around since Feature Patch but it recently had a dev asking for more info about it.. so.. there is still some hope…

Also in my case I had no issue with members list in that panel, but the “What is a Guild?” text happened to me.

They’ve previously claimed to have resolved the inventory-resizing bug and they are having trouble reproducing it.

In contrast, the guild interface bug is new and is almost trivial to reproduce. Near as I can tell, it affects everyone who is a member of at least two guilds, one of which is small/tiny and the other of which has at least 30-50 members (big enough for the roster to fill the main panel).

Anyhow, I’m not saying the Devs won’t respond or ask follow-up questions. I’m just saying I won’t be surprised if they don’t have the time and yet end up fixing this anyhow.

Suggestion: Fossilized Insect Fragments

in Living World

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Or they could slightly adjust the drop rate chance upwards with each box that a player opens.

That wouldn’t address the problem I’ve outlined. If the current drop rate is 1:30, there’s about a 3% chance that you can open 100 chests without finding a fossil. If they change that to 1:25, then it’s about a 2% chance you could still miss out.

Using those numbers, you’d still expect to see from 4 people in a max-sized guild farming 100 chests without luck, instead of 6 in the 1:30 scenario. That seems to me like too many disappointed people.

With a single RNG opportunity, there is always a significant chance that someone will over-farm without reaching their goal and I think the system ought to be set up so that there is almost no chance that people can be that unlucky.

The only other option is to increase the rate until it’s so high that the fossils are common for most people, and that decreases people’s delight in finding them. At a certain point, if the reward is “too easy” to acquire, people don’t appreciate it as much and even resent any of the effort involved.

In short, I’d like the setup modified so that anyone who farms “long enough” is nearly guaranteed (99.9999%) to get at least one shiny.

SPOILER Living story ripped from Mass Effect

ya’ll can argue about tropes archetypes and all that garbage to your hearts’ content. you can say Shakespeare or whoever you want did everything first for any kitten on earth anyway.

Naw, not worth the time. The original poster will never be convinced that Mass Effect didn’t originate the tropes mentioned in the first post.

What’s important in any story is if the reader/listener feels transported to another era and caught up in the trials and tribulations of the characters.

  • When that happens, then no one cares about who had the idea first (which is why Hollywood Producers can successfully reduce so many movies to “boy meets girl” descriptions).
  • When it doesn’t happen, then why bother caring if the plotline/ideas/characters were copied from another source? Bad stories aren’t any fun.

As a notable example, the Matrix stole its plot (and many of its details) from Philip K. four-letter-word-rhyming-with-Sick stories (among others), but that didn’t stop it from being a popular movie franchise, because it included a compelling story that transported people to another world for 2 hours. (Even as someone who didn’t enjoy the movies, I can respect and acknowledge their success…and the reasons for it.)

Has there been any word on this at all?

Is it only affecting a subset of players? If so do we need to start compiling a list of common factors?

It affects people more who are in a small and a large guild, so perhaps not everyone notices it.

Also: I wouldn’t expect to hear anything about this — there isn’t a single software company in the world that has time to respond to every bug note on their official forums. If it’s an “easy” fix, we’ll see it in the next scheduled patch.

We might find it super annoying (I know I do), but it’s not a show-stopper; people can play the game successfully without this being addressed for a while.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I really like the idea of earning rewards through playing in the new area, but I don’t like the idea that people are farming until their eyes bleed because they are unlucky with the drop rates for fossilized insects.

I propose that, going forward, ANet uses the model of BL tickets for such rewards:

  • Slightly lower the drop rate of the “ticket” (in this case: fossilized insects)
  • Introduce a new item, analogous to ticket scraps, perhaps fossilized insect fragments.
  • Allow people to turn in e.g. 10 fragments for a full fossil.

Those who are lucky will still be lucky. But those who have bad luck will at least be able to progress towards getting one. (It’s mathematically easy enough to allow the final drop rates to be about the same.)

Basic salvage kit salvage rate

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If your goal is to get ANet to review the actual rates for particular kits, your best bet is to be meticulous about recording data and report the details first and theories after. The dev team will be swayed to investigate by compelling research.

If you don’t …write down your results then you can very easily remember only your bad streaks.

Humans are very good at remembering unlucky streaks and terrible about taking note of lucky ones. Somehow, we think it’s “fair” when we get better-than-average results and complain when we get less than expected. (And we hardly even notice “average” results.)

For example: I can remember the details of a series of 20 “no-upgrade” forging attempts that took place months ago, but hardly any of them from a 14-successes-in-20-attempts streak that took place less than a week ago.

I can only suggest that you begin the annoying and tedious task of revisiting each Lost Coin. Every time I’ve suggested this for similar scavenger hunts (including the Tyrian diving achievement), people have discovered that they missed one — they thought they had gotten credit (and so checked it off), but apparently had missed some step. (I include myself in this, since I’ve had to do this for two separate achievements.)

Now, that doesn’t mean that it won’t turn out to be a bug for the OP & Son, but I think it has a high probability of success.

Two years? Maybe you mean a few months (since the mega server update).

I do agree it’s extremely annoying as the other nearby events complete ahead of the time limit, thus leaving an artificial delay between the end of pre-Arah and the beginning of the assault on the promenade.

I’d prefer to see Angaria’s event fixed (as it was one of the funnest and most profitable farming events in Orr). Alternatively, remove her event temporarily until a suitable replacement can be found. There is something unsavory about people asking that Angaria be allowed to die, to increase the amount of time for farming.

Mass buy orders, against ToS?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Wait… after all the threads and months of this happening you guys are just looking into it now? I’m grateful that you are, don’t get me wrong… but this has been an issue for quite some time now…

I don’t see an “issue.” I see a formerly nearly useless TP statistic turned into an vaguely interesting sociological statistic. I don’t see how the economy is affected in the least by what shows up as “top demanded,” except that the alleged manipulation highlights (a) some items that people didn’t even know about and (b) shows how much tedium people are willing to suffer in order to make a few extra coins.

The same type of person that’s fine with manipulating people to gain a few virtual coins is also probably fine with breaking the rules a bit to get what they want. It’s not tedium… it’s people using a program to put in mass buy orders.

It also covers up what the actual top demanded items are, so now it’s not serving its intended purpose in multiple ways. That’s an issue if you’re trying to give that information to your players.

You’re equating two entirely separate actions. It’s always wrong to use 3rd party software to interact with the game in a way that gives someone an advantage. People who do that should get suspended/banned, regardless of whether there’s a provable impact on the economy.

So if we can agree to talk just about the people who are manually adding millions of orders to items, then again, I don’t see any harm done. In my strong opinion, the “Top 10 Demanded” list doesn’t have any useful data and so it doesn’t matter if the “real” top 10 items are “covered up.” Instead, it reveals information about items that market-savvy individuals think are under-valued. (And although they are doing so to make money, not out of any noble intent, I find that I can make use of that data.)

We probably do agree that it would be better to replace the list with something else, perhaps, “10 thinks that spiked in demand recently and also have a decent supply” or whatever that might be of value to the vast majority of players.

That’s pretty close to the ideal setup for the state of MMOs in 2014, in my opinion.

As an addendum, keep in mind that market “players” (speculators, flippers, etc) exist in every MMO’s economy. The difference in GW2 is that their actions are public, whereas in other MMOs, they are hidden. This allows the market to adjust to manipulation attempts far faster than in other games.

I’m not saying all speculation is good nor am I saying that market players are altruistic heroes. I am saying that the TP allows people to behave like…humans do (some greedy, some not) and still end up with a largely positive result for the vast majority of players.

I think there’s often a lot of public reaction about savvy trading (and how much some people earn from it), because it’s so easy to see. In other games, it happens behind the scenes, so that most people don’t even realize how much better it is in GW2.

Was it always intended that the game should offer asymmetric data on the custom offer screens? e.g. buyers can see competitive offers, but sellers can only see the highest WTB and lowest WTS.

John Smith.4610:

I’m not an expert on UI and cannot speak on that.

I wasn’t so much asking about the UI as about the fact that asymmetrical data presentation usually leads to less efficient markets. Are you concerned that this might be the case and that UI experts should take another pass at the interface, based on advice from you?

Do you think that showing all of these events makes the map feel cluttered? Would it make finding the information you care about more difficult?

For the mini-map, I would find it cluttered to see all events in the instance. I would also find it cluttered to include a list underneath the standard personal story/nearest event list.

Instead, I wonder if ANet can follow in the footsteps of gw2state.com and similar sites by creating a two-tier event overlay to go on the primary map.

  • First tier: toggle on the event overlay on or off (default).
  • Second tier: choose options for which events to display, for example:
    • Champion events.
    • Meta events.
    • Events active for more than 20 minutes.
    • Trait-unlocking events.

I suppose ANet could also add an option for display a list of upcoming timed events in the zone.

Regardless of the details, I would hope ANet would avoid a one-size-fits-all approach.

I’d file this under QoL rather than bugs:

When you equip mantras for land, you can’t easily equip them for water. You spend the time channeling to ready them (on land) and then if you misstep into the water (common in parts of Maelstrom, WvW, etc), you lose all your readied mantras.

When ANet deals with the bugs mentioned above (keeping an extra stack or getting an extra proc), I’d like to see them change the mechanic to allows us to maintain the readied mantras while underwater, at least if we don’t get into combat (or perhaps some other trigger, e.g. less than 30 seconds in the water).

The trigger is slightly above the water, so it’s possible to die on the nearby bamboo and get the achievement. However, ideally, your goal is to land in the pool in order to swim in it.

In most areas of Dry Top, you can hit multiple aspects along the way; that refreshes the time you have.

I don’t have VIMS and so I can’t speak to that, but I do have trouble with timed jumps (I either take too long aiming or rush and misjudge the jump/skill). But I think increasing the time available would nearly eliminate any real challenge to the puzzles, and thus make it tedious (rather than fun) for the vast majority of players.

ANet is always in a balancing act, between making sure that nearly everyone can access the content and making sure that it is enjoyable for those that can. That means, unfortunately, that there are always going to be people who are left out.

I would recommend you find a partner to do these with, especially a mesmer. They can help rez, port you back to a good starting place, and, when necessarily, shortcut the most annoying steps. I also find it more fun. That might not be the solution you are hoping for, but it’s one within your control, instead of waiting for ANet to re-re-reconsider how to balance the content.

Can we please buy gems with bitcoin?

All currencies are “fake” to a certain extent — they are (in most countries) only backed by people’s faith in their issuing authority. In the case of bitcoin, there’s a distinct lack of faith.

Even if that wasn’t the case, ANet has explained that, for a variety of reasons, they have no plans to take payment in currencies other thkitten dollars, euros, and British pounds. It seems more likely that they’d add Aussie dollars, Yen, or other currencies that are used by a substantial fraction of the player base.

And that’s without even getting into how many gems you could get for a bit coin.

“Can’t” play?

I suspect this is more difficult to change than it would seem (there are a lot of game resources that would be affected) and it’s not going to get high priority, since it doesn’t actually prevent playing — it’s an annoying visual bug, not a show stopper.

I have the last one now, I think it re-appeared, because I’m quite sure it wasn’t there the previous days ( in the oasis, above the pool ). If it was I must have been blind… but I’m just happy now that I finished the achievement

Awesome — glad to hear.

BTW: it seems pretty common that people think they found all the shinies in a scavenger hunt, but then it turns out they missed one. That happened to me (and several folks I know) with Diving, a lot of people with the basic crystals during last year’s and this year’s Zephyrite fests, and last chapter’s coin chasing. That doesn’t mean that stuff doesn’t bug out sometimes, but if/when it happens to me, I’m going to assume user error first.

GW1 had better RNG to be honest. I feel that GW2’s terrible RNG is directly tied to the gemstore. ie. Frustrate people until they cave and pull out their visas.
I couldn’t even care about getting a weapon, although they are cool.
I am at the point where I just don’t even care about the drops anymore

I have to strongly disagree. GW1 had worse drops by far. I’d do vanquishes with two other players regularly, and we considered it lucky if we got 5-6 rares between us; we never saw greens, even during double-drop weeks.

And then if you actually did get a drop, it was often worthless to you. Most greens had so little value that vendors barely wanted to buy them. And if you did get a coveted item, it was likely that it didn’t fit your builds, so you’d have to sit around kamadan for hours trying to sell it for “market” value.

In GW2, I can make use of any drop: most gear sells at greater than vendor value, the mats can be used to create stuff I ckittene/sell/forge, etc. In GW1, bad drops meant more inventory to manage; there were no alternative uses.

I’m not saying GW2 RNG is optimal, but in my opinion, it is far superior to that of GW1.

Three questions:

  • Was it always intended that the game should offer asymmetric data on the custom offer screens? e.g. buyers can see competitive offers, but sellers can only see the highest WTB and lowest WTS.
  • Post-wardrobe, did ANet intend it to be difficult to recover runes and sigils from equipment? Similarly, is it an oversight that some gear can’t be forged due to its source? For example, you can forge but not salvage karma-bought armor and you can’t even forge badge-bought armor.
  • A recent patch made some changes to the mystic forge output for L75+ average gear inputs. You stated at the time that you thought we’d be pleased with the results. Have you been?

I misunderstood the original request, as I thought the OP wanted some long-term, low risk investments. As clarified later, Verificus wants to try to double or treble their coin as quickly as possible.

The short story is that it’s impossible for us to provide great advice about that: as soon as we publish, dozens of others are likely to try to follow the same techniques, thus quickly reducing the profitability of whatever “sure-fire” system we try to explain.

Put another way: if it was easy to make that much money quickly, everyone would be doing it.

To make money really quickly, you have limited choices:

  • Find something craftable for which the components are (momentarily) much too cheap.
  • Find something forgeable, for which the components are severely underpriced.
  • Find a container (e.g. Heavy Moldy Bag), which is severely under-valued, i.e. the components sell for 20% or more than the cost of the bags.
  • Flip.

The problem with each of these is that the market quickly corrects the highest value opportunities, leaving relatively few ways to invest gold for quick, high profits. That said, there are always market niches for each of the above; you just have to be quick about investing in them and quicker about getting out when the competition figures them out.

For example, boring but reliable flips can be easily found in the dye markets. At any given moment, there are usually about a dozen fine dyes that can be custom ordered for less than half the price at which at which they can be custom sold. The list of the 12-ish dyes changes from day to day (sometimes hour to hour).

The trick is to buy as many as you can at the lowest price, sell for as much as the market will handle quickly, and switch to the next set as the competition catches up.

Fine dyes aren’t ideal for working with 100s of gold, because you can only make ~50 copper/unit. So you want to look for similar niches in other markets.

In the Crucible of Eternity, you have a chance to save the Inquest (rather than let them be gobbled up by their escaped experiment).

Thus, it might be interesting to add that sort of choice to the LS, e.g. what if you could increase favor of the Zephyrites for either shutting down the Light Bridge or rescuing some inquest from quicksand (but not both).

I’m sorry you guys are having bad luck. Unfortunately, someone has to :-/

Someone suggested that the drop rate for fossilized insects is about 1:25. If that’s true, then there’s a 1.7% chance that you might open 100 buried chests and still not see a fossil.

I know several people who got 30/30 yesterday, after the most recent patches.

I know it’s tedious, but my recommendation is to revisit every coin location to make sure you got credit for it. Ideally, take a screen shot at each location. This does two things:

  • It forces you to be systematic about both reaching the site and verifying it.
  • If it turns out there is a bug, the 30 screens can be sent to support, giving the QA team the type of evidence they need to troubleshoot.

Good luck!

There are probably three main types of supply:

  • Listed for sale on TP.
  • Sitting in guild storage or banks of active players (those that logon at least, say, 1x/month).
  • Same, but belonging to inactive players.

We’d also have to distinguish between all the different item types in the game. I’m sure the ratios of those three categories differ depending on whether we are talking about cloth vs leather, fine vs common vs rare mats, BL weapon skins vs other low-drop-rate skins, and so forth.

None of that data would have much meaning outside the context of the shape of their specific markets: I’m sure there are tons of Unidentified Dyes that people are hoarding for just the right time and I doubt that would be of concern. In contrast, the same ratios of silver or gold ore might be unhealthy. (Or perhaps not.)

In short, I don’t think Mr Smith can give us a “general idea” that would be of any value to us, except to create another topic of misunderstanding.

Ah, many thanks, Stin Vec. I read Gaile’s post(s) carefully, but not Teemo’s (as I should have done). (Note to self: never post when rushed.)

That’s also good to know, since it means my friends with actual Real Lives™ won’t have to worry about that.

Once again, my thanks for doing the heavy lifting to answer my question

If the drop rate is 1:25 for fossilized insects, then the odds of getting at least one after opening is:

  • ~64% if opening 25 chests.
  • ~87% for 50 chests
  • ~95% for 75 chests

I have no idea what the real odds are (and I suspect no one else does either), so your mileage is going to vary.

  • Check your Trading Post. Don’t leave it cluttered up with hundreds of transactions, do a little housekeeping!

People who are buying mats, zommy fodder, or containers (e.g. moldy bags) are likely to have hundreds of pending transactions. It’s constant weeding, rather than just “a little” housekeeping. A lot of times, folks will want to just play the new content rather than managing their inventory.

Accordingly, Gaile do you know if people who just logon (and enter the game world) are going to be able to unlock each chapter if they also have a full TP queue?

I ask because I have been sending out semi-monthly reminders to guildies who I know don’t have time to play regularly these days. I’d like to know if I need to update my advice to “logon and pick up stuff from the TP” or it’s ok “just logon and start up any character.”

Thanks.
