I think most everyone (ANet staff included) would prefer if chat remained regardless of dropping party. There’s no particular advantage to the player for its current behavior.

Paid armor skin restrictions

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’ve played quite a few MMOs in my day and I don’t think I’ve ever encountered such a system of charging for the ability to transmute items. I suppose that I could understand charging players to transmute gear found in the game, but the same restrictions apply to 10 dollar purchases from the cash shop.

Being fairly new to the game I could be missing easy ways to gain the ability to transmute; and I would love to know how I can make use of these armor skins while leveling.

You get one transmutation charge (or one black lion key) for map completion of explorable areas. City completion always gives a charge and Rata Sum or the Grove can be done in about 10-20 minutes (depending on experience).

I haven’t spent a dime (or a gem) to transmute.

In addition, skins earned as rewards can be re-used without cost (e.g. heritage armor or zenith weapons) and outfits never require transmutation charges.

However, as it appears, Arenanet is telling me not to indulge until I hit 80 and then some how managed to get a set of armor that I don’t intend to replace.

Prior to the wardrobe system, it was easier to transmute low-level gear (using transmutation stones, which were abundant) and more costly to transmute L80 gear (that required transmutation crystals, which were less easily obtained than now).

I’m good with that, because I spend more time at L80 than I ever would below the max. Be nice if we could have both, of course.

Why haven’t players spoken out against this?

  • There were complaints, but they died down rather quickly.
  • Players have spoken with their wallets: they acquire new skins and they part with cash/gems to buy transmutation crystals.

My impression is that most people prefer the current system to the one in place at in March 2014. Over time, I’m sure people will start to notice more of the negatives, especially as new players, including yourself, start to comment.

A bigger complaint is about being able to swap valuable runes/sigils from karma or wvw gear: the old system allowed you to do this via transmutation; the current system doesn’t offer a cheap solution. At some point, they’ll probably address this and maybe they’ll take another look at making lowbie toons look spiffy.

Your situation isn’t odd per se, only I think ANet’s overall response will be:

  • This is working as designed.
  • Unique is defined on the wiki
  • Players are warned to be sure of their purchases before spending laurels and ecto on an item.
  • Buy-back is not a feature available in the game at this time.

Personally, I think that puts an unreasonable burden on players new to ascended gear, the very ones that can least afford to make mistakes. But changing the current system amounts to offering a suggestion on how to improve things, rather than reporting a bug.

Champions killed, no XP or champ bag

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Some events have always included champs that don’t drop loot (notably Clawr of Jormag, first phase); ANet added a few champs to several events that won’t drop loot (notably Fire Elemental pre-events).

During Fire Elemental pre-events, with the exception of some Veteran Golems (they are standard spawns), mobs upscaled to veterans or higher do not give Exp nor drop any loots at all, and I wonder what is up with that. I don’t think the devs can explain that.

My apologies: I thought I did explain it. The idea is to ensure that everyone can get credit for the event. In the past, the lesser mobs died too quickly for a lot of people to tag. By adding the elite+ mobs (as appropriate to the event’s scaling), foes last a lot longer and give more players more time (and HP to damage), allowing folks to get credit.

In order to do that quickly, without having to rework event mechanics, they added trash mobs, that rare NPC in GW2 that gives neither XP nor loot when killed. That resolves the “getting credit” problem, without creating a situation ripe for exploitation.

That has several unintended and annoying consequences (noted above), but on the whole, it’s lowered overall frustration with the relevant events.

Major guild issue

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

When they announced mega-servers, they realized that world-bound influence/improvements would be an issue. At the time, they said they would like to change it, but they didn’t have anything scheduled.

In other words, there will not be a quick fix for this, even though (we were told that) ANet would like to be able to do so.

I speculate that it is not as easy to untangle this mess as it might seem on the surface. First, they’d have to solve the pure coding issue in which “world” is built into how influence is collected. Second, they’d have to figure out a way to reasonably combine existing influence and merit pools. Third, and probably the one that will slow them down the most, they have to figure out how to handle improvements that have already been build.

Suppose there is a guild like TTS, which has members on 10-15 different worlds per guild. They have collected enough influence to build guild banks on five of them. Because they were spread out, they also “sped up” the building process, which accrued additional influence costs. When the influence pools are combined, should they get a refund? If so how much?

What happens to the items that are in the 5 different banks? Does ANet require every guild to withdraw items first before linking/combining them? Should GW2 offer more space than the current 250-slot limit to make this easier? If so, should any guild get the upgrade automatically (based on how many banks they already have) or should each be required to make the necessary upgrades?

Maybe that sounds easy, but it’s easy to get that sort of customer service wrong, so I can imagine that ANet has said: let’s table this for now, until we are making other changes to the games guild mechanics and offer a comprehensive set of features.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Some events have always included champs that don’t drop loot (notably Clawr of Jormag, first phase); ANet added a few champs to several events that won’t drop loot (notably Fire Elemental pre-events).

The reason in both cases was that stuff died too quickly and some people couldn’t get event credit. ANet wanted to make it easier to deliver damage without unbalancing the amount of loot that dropped. My preference is that they call such foes “Chumpions” or “Felites” (failed elites?) or something to identify them as non-loot-bearing foes.

I’d also like to see all such foes be worth 1 experience point, so that on-kill effects properly trigger, e.g. rallying on their death, charging sigils|food, etc. This would be low enough to make farming them worthless, but enough so that instance combat wouldn’t be fundamentally different from that in open-world.

The later example given by Mao is a bit different: first taggers seem to get preferential credit over those who fight later. I suspect this is a client/server issue: your computer believes it’s doing a ton of damage, but the server says, “nope, I’ve already distributed all the loot imma drop.” If that’s so, any fix would require a drastic change to the underlying mechanics behind drop credit and would explain why they haven’t addressed it …yet.

They are no longer super easy since the megaserver. The Great Jungle Wurm has been claiming lives as well.

Unless you mean the triple headed wurm the old one is very easy now …
Claw of Jormag on the other hand now takes twice as long(or more than triple for yesterday’s run). >_<

The Clawr takes longer? First wall is taken down in 2 waves; clawr itself goes down fast or slow depending on how many people farming champs near the watched ledges.

Lower price of some gem store items?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Some people who played the game early were able to take benefit of low gold to gem ratio and unlocked the bag slots at very low price.

If you want ANet to offer a discount, I don’t think the “fairness” argument will convince them: the effort involved in increasing storage today is comparable to how it was when the game launched and over time.

Back at launch (and for some time later), it was a lot harder to obtain gold. T6 mats sold for vendor +1 (or less sometimes, since it was possible to price them below that). Dungeons didn’t give guaranteed rewards, there were no champ bags (heck, champs sometimes didn’t drop any loot at all), and so forth.

Besides, extra bag slots were a terrible deal for increasing inventory space, compared to other strategies; many people didn’t bother with them. Also, the price of the bags themselves haven’t gone up much: upgrading from 10-slot to 20-slot today costs just as much as it did then.

In fact, it might be easier now to earn enough to buy a new bag slot. It probably is harder this week (sudden spike in gold:gem ratio), but we’d have to do the math to see if it was last month.

Gems prices and current Gem store sale

Gem prices seem mostly fine to me. (Sometimes I wonder why an outfit is priced nearly as much as an armor set or a mini that can’t swim is 500 gems instead of 400.)

Of course, it would be nice if they offered discounts for buying in bulk. However, either they are making good money with the current system or their monetization experts aren’t open to new ideas.

The thing that makes the biggest impact is when people don’t spend cash to buy gems and don’t buy some gem-only products. As long as people, such as myself, are willing to pay 1,000 gems for the convenience of an infinite-use tool, they will offer them at that price.

Duration of sales?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s several patterns for “sales.” 24-hour, a few days, or even a few weeks. There’s no way to know unless ANet says at the start.

In the case of character slots, it’s through the weekend (maybe through Monday IIRC). In the case of sickles, I don’t remember them giving an end date.

Regardless, Behellagh’s statement is always relevant: when there’s less than 24 hours, the gem shop will show a countdown timer. (They’ve also had countdowns starting at 48 or 72 hrs, but I don’t think that’s been consistent.)

(Note to any ANet staffers reading this far: please start announcing end-dates for each sale and include that detail in the gem shop description or at least, be consistent about starting the countdown as soon as the item is offered. This will prevent a ton of confusion and any number of posts. Thanks.)

Gems:Gold vs. Gold:Gems

Illconceived Was Na.9781

i dunno about you but i have more things to pay for then a game and my incomes isn’t exactly perfect, i also don’t have all the time in the world to farm my butt off just for some gold.

The game, unlike many others, allows you to buy nearly anything with your choice of gold (earned in the game) or cash (spent on gems); you can exchange the one for the other, so in effect, the game allows you the option of spending money or time. From my point of view, that’s very generous compared to most other games. (Heck, WoW still charges you a monthly fee even if you don’t play.)

If I understand you correctly, you’re suggesting that the game should also cater to people without money or time. If you can offer a constructive suggestion for how ANet might turn a profit from that, I’m sure they would consider it.

when i spend real money on a game, i better get my money’s worth.

Everyone’s definition of “money’s worth” is different. If you don’t believe you would get ten euros of entertainment from spending €10, then, of course, you shouldn’t spend it.

try again…..

I believe the ball is in your court: the system — and why it’s “fair” for the community as a whole — has been explained. What’s the alternative, that serves the need of game and its economy (including both buyers and sellers of gems)?

Update
I transmuted my chest piece to another form. I was able to dye that form, transmute it back, and dye the chest piece pictured above. However, this process has taken 2 transmutation charges. I will need to use 6 more charges to finish dyeing the other 3 pieces of gear I want died.

Arenanet, can you please provide compensation for these crystals? This proves this is clearly a bug.

The picture below shows that my chest has the gold color I was going for, but the other pieces of gear (that I didn’t transmute back and forth) don’t have the color.

I’m glad you found a successful work-around. Good detective work.

At this point, in your shoes, I’d go ahead and setup my armor the way I wanted and then create two support tickets (or in your case, update one and create a second):

  1. One would be describing the bug and the work-around. (This is the continuation of the ticket you mentioned creating.)
  2. Request a refund of transmutation charges. (Any refund will need a ticket number, regardless of the case’s merits.)

The idea is so that the right team member is tasked to each ticket (and yeah, you’re gonna have to patiently explain in each ticket that there are two requests, not one, which is why the tickets should not be combined). The go-to person for reporting bugs is probably not the same as the expert in handling special refund requests.

A semi-risky option for (2) would be replacing the charges you used with ones bought from the gemshop. This gives the support team something to refund. If all goes well, you end up with just as many gems and charges as you had last week; if they opt not to refund, then you end up with fewer gems. It’s not a risk I’d take lightly, but I’ve noticed that Support has a lot of trouble figuring out a “refund” when the player hasn’t spent any gems or cash. They have tools to reverse charges (in very limited circumstances), but likely no tools to just “donate” stuff, even in a good cause.

Whatever you choose, I’m glad you figured out a solution and good luck with support.

edit: (1) = (2) for very large values of (1)

Illconceived, that trick didnt’ work. However, I did discover I could dye the cheap gear. This would make me think it’s only transmuted gear that doesn’t work, but there is a pair of un-transmuted boots I am wearing that doesn’t dye either.

Additionally, to the point about running repair on GW2. I tried to dyefrom my other machine (with a different installation), and it didn’t work their either. I think it is safe to assume the problem doesn’t reside there.

That’s unfortunate.

Well, at least you have some good data that you can add to your support ticket.

One thing I didn’t ask is: what was the original and transmuted armor? Perhaps it’s something anomalous with that combination? If you post the details, I can try to duplicate the results and see what happens. I can’t imagine why that would matter, but when it comes to bugs, I’m a strict empiricist: if it’s easy, run even implausible tests; I can’t tell you how often that’s uncovered the clue needed to resolve the issue.

There are several possibilities:

  1. The items are in an “invisible” bag (nothing can be sold from those). Move it to another spot in your inventory and try again.
  2. The items are account- or soul-bound and cannot be sold at all. (You probably checked that already, but just in case.)
  3. Something we cannot spot easily: try moving the items to another toon and try from there.

To review the OP’s suggestion:

  • Elder Wood was never in short supply, but other items are.
  • Why not have Foxfire (or the next special item) drop from one of those nodes?

I don’t actually have a problem with some items being in constant low supply: it’s great for new and casual players to find it in their travels. I also see value in offering special drops from stuff in low-tier zones. For example, elder wood was never in short supply, so why not make Foxfire drop alongside e.g. Soft Wood, which has been in short supply since ascended crafting?

It seems to me that ANet (in the form of John Smith) did that deliberately, to ensure that mid-tier zones would always be profitable farming locations.

That was the last of the regular fractals, but we had to exit.

Of course, it would be great if you guys could solve the underlying issue, but if that’s not possible, how about having an interactable object next to the Anvil that allows to generate a new hammer? (No doubt there’s some ugly coding to prevent 2+ hammers from being out at the same time.)

It depends if your goal is looking good, convenience, or something silly/fun.

  • Convenience, as Laokoko suggested, more space is always helpful: it reduces the time you spend managing inventory and thus allows you more time to play.
  • Looking good, as Behellagh suggested, there are some limited-availability skins in the gem shop.
  • Fun(ish), as Zaxares offered: getting a commander tag now for 1/3 the cost it will be in a few weeks.

You might also want to wait until next week. The 2nd anniversary is coming up, so I expect items to go on sale, some new stuff to become available, and I also expect people to start selling off their high-end goods (so they, too, can afford to buy some of this stuff).

What is the best way to get a precursor?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Put in a buy order for whatever you can afford today. Any time your wallet can afford it, drop that offer and create a new one that’s 20-30g higher. Eventually, someone will accept an offer. Everyone I know who uses this technique has gotten their precursor for well below the going rate at the time.

This does a couple of things, mostly psychological (the greatest obstacle to acquiring a precursor now):

  • It hides your money, so you don’t accidentally spend it on impulse purchases or the latest cool skin.
  • It keeps you from checking the TP every day. You’ll only check when your wallet starts to build up.
  • It allows you to notice your progress towards your goal, matching your experience with accumulating T6 mats and lodestones (if needed). Each time you look, you’ll have made a good chunk of progress.
  • It keeps you from obsessing over the magnitude of the goal. In perspective, a precursor is never more than 3/5 of the total cost of a legendary (and it’s less than 40% for more than half of them). However, since you never see the total cost of any single “gift,” those always seem less daunting, even though many are worth 100s of gold, too.

The only people who save money by forging for precursors are the 1/10% who are extremely lucky or the small group of people that invest 1,000s of gold on a regular basis; the law of large numbers works for them, but work against those of us unwilling to risk that much.

It is worth to play GW1 today?

in Players Helping Players

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If you think of it as a completely different game, it’s great fun. However, imo, it pales compared to modern MMOs. It’s been on sale recently for maybe US$25-35 for all campaigns, so it’s not a huge investment to try it out.

It will be much harder to do in the original order because it’s not very well populated and the original campaign, Prophecies, doesn’t provide a lot of solo support. (Some people won’t have any trouble, but most people I know would.) Try to find a guild or group that are doing the same.

The EotN expansion and Nightfall campaign provide “heroes”, some NPCs that you can set up with custom builds and once you get a decent set of those, the game becomes much easier. If you have the full set of games, you can do a quick detour into both those areas to pick up a few; it will help a lot (even if it’s not quite “canon”).

However, if your goal is getting the HoM rewards, you should expect to invest a lot of hours in the game, unless you get a lot of in-game financial help. Knowing everything I already know, I doubt it would take me less than 90-100 hours of grinding at peak efficiency to get the 30 points needed to max my GW2 rewards for a new account.

Or to put it in perspective, I spent about 3-4+ hours giving stuff to a friend to help her add 10 points on an account that had already earned 5-6 points. That is, I didn’t complete any quests or missions; I just pulled stuff out of mules and handed it to her or NPCs.

  • If you want individual help from ANet, you’ll want to create a support ticket. The forums are for general discussion. (They will log bugs based on our posts, but it’s rare that someone can be tasked to assist you personally, from a post on the forums.)
  • Try removing all armor and equipping an entirely different set/skin (some cheap ones on the TP). Don’t transmute. Use dye remover on every channel. Apply. [F12] to the character select screen and try dying that experimental set. If it works, try the same on your original set. If it doesn’t, ouch, but you’ll have more data for support.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

There really are not so many commanders on a field so as to make colors more than just helpful. I suppose it helps when saying “Follow blue or Follow Yellow” and that is helpful, but not really critical or that impactful.

I see this as more of a quality of life feature vs something that will create new strategies etc.

  • In WvW, typically people limit the map to 1-2 to make it easier to coordinate; that can change now.
  • In PvE, there are often multiple commanders in the map for different meta events taking place. This will enable new strategies to develop.
  • And, of course, in PvE, there are plenty of vanity plates, too. This will make the map more colorful, but won’t do anything to address the issue that anyone who plays long enough (and wants a tag) can get it.

So, actually, this change is more than a quality of life change, even if it’s not going to completely change the game.

Question regarding selling Jetpack

I’d be surprised if you don’t get your 930g asking price. The question is only: how long are you willing to wait?

If the answer is: not long, then ask for less, maybe 850g. The difference between 790g (from 930g asking price) and 663g (from accepting the top bid) isn’t going to change your wealth by enough to affect how you play, so it’s really the age-old marketplace question of: do you want less money immediately or more money later?

Inb4 this was a calculated ‘leak’ so they can then ‘generously’ change the decision to show how ‘in touch’ they are with WvW players.

Say what

I’m just going to squash this rumor right now. Before the strong negative feedback received after the interview at gamescom, every intention was for each color to cost 300g. Pending QA, that version was ready to ship for the feature pack.

When the flood of feedback came in, there was a flurry of emails working out the best course of action, and in the end Zach and Tyler worked the weekend to make sure this change could be made on time for 9/9.

Thanks both for the change and sharing the details of how ANet staff absorbed the feedback and decided how best to implement it. I’m glad you guys were able to adjust the build before release.

(And I’m sorry to diminish my thanks with the following: you might also want to look at how to prevent such a disconnect from happening again: the feedback from CDI was surprisingly unified and unambiguous on this point: colors were for on-the-fly tactical responses; it remains a mystery how that got implemented as “pay 900g extra.”)

Maybe it’s not that I’m slow so much as I get lost easily. In any case, thanks for the note (I updated my post to clarify what the list was showing).

And yes, those are good tips for the first bit of swamp: mobility, stealth, and portal.

you can duo swamp.

all you need is a mesmer who knows how to portal

Thanks for the reply.

Did I forget to mention that above? (I do mesmer, but I’m too slow to reliably get two wisps usually. I definitely need practice.)

Not everyone is willing to farm Orr for T6 mats or do the dungeon path rotation or ride the boss train every 15 minutes their entire play session. That’s min/max thinking as oppose to playing a game because you enjoy it. I’m sure it wasn’t ANet’s plan that players should adopt such degenerate play styles but rather hoped that players would simply play in the world.

yep, you hit the nail on the head. The reason why I dislike these activities because they remind me of farmville. Seriously, why grind simple task and press a few buttons to receive the greatest reward. I find these activities boring. I want to play the game rather than continue this continuous cycle of checking timers and progress bars.

I sell stuff I don’t want and use the funds generated from that to buy stuff I do want. I don’t farm foxfires, charged lodes, or armored scales; I pay others to do that for me.

I really don’t like farming for more than 30 minutes, so I’m happy to share my wealth with others that do.

awesomium.

is that element #120? please tell me it’s element #120. tell me now.

I know you are trying a funny but for those that really don’t know.

http://www.awesomium.com/

I’m sorry to report, Mystic, that element 120 is unimaginatively named, Unbinilium . Awesomium would be a perfect name, but, alas, now that it’s the name of a proprietary bit of software, that is more unlikely than ever.

On the other hand, item 120 refers to a pair of “Strong Worn Chain Greaves,” while skin 120 refers to the “Illustrious Grips,” the look for medium ascended armor .

Always crash during 3 events

I’m not overclocked, but I also have to tune my GFX low to those same three events. It doesn’t always happen, but I just routinely set character details or culling options to their lowest setting and I am able to avoid crashing.

This didn’t used to happen, but since I’m the only one I know affected by this, I’ve assumed it’s an overheating problem that is only noticeable during those three events (they tend to get a lot more effects concentrating in a few places than others).

The last time I crashed was during Tequatl and it wasn’t until after the fight — it happened when everyone converged on the boss chest.

Belindas Greatsword orHow Anet trolled thiefs

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The game has never treated “Thief” like a generic Japanese style romanticized figure of yore and has never given thieves a greatsword to use. I don’t see any relationship between the thief and a greatsword skin that happens to have stylistic roots in middle ages Japan.

That’s as far from trolling as you can possible get, without running into yourself on the other side.

Maybe what the OP means is that they would love to see thief weapons that share that motif (many of the weapon names are listed above in other posts).

edit: it’s always later that we think of the perfect response, which should have been:

If you want to call this trolling of thieves by ANet, then Nooooooo Dachi for youuuuuu.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This has been requested since release. If I remember correctly this is not possible because the items do not have the light/medium/heavy data filter attached to them.

That was “probably” true then, but it’s no longer true. The API has a flag for weight now.
For example, Item 2301=Carrion Reinforced Scale Pauldrons of the Citadel include the notation: _"weight_class":"Heavy"_.

My guess is that they don’t have anyone who can overhaul the UI in a way that would please the community (rather than annoy everyone further). I’m sure they have a number of changes they want to implement and will do so, as soon as they have someone who knows UI design and can work with awesomium.

It’s rare that they’ve introduced gem shop items for less than two to four weeks without telling us: they tend to want to encourage a “hurry up and spend” attitude, where possible.

Based on recent practice, you will see a cooldown timer on the sale items at least 48 hrs before the end of the availability. Sometimes (but not “often”), they’ll announce a change in the gem shop offerings via the main guildwars2.com page.

I speculate that B’s Greatsword will be available at least through the first two weeks of the feature pack and probably until the next Living Story update. (But I’ve been wrong before.)

This is not just a problem with precursors but one that affects all highly-rare tradeable good.
As soon as a scarcity is detected, people with more gold then you could’ve thought possible, buy them out as a future investment.

Of course, some wealthy players do this. The question is: does it happen enough that it affects the market. When John Smith has replied to similar topics, he’s said, no: there is never a single player or even an accidental consortium that controls the supply (outside of exceptions lasting hours).

So, yes, rich people speculate on high-demand items (in an effort to be much richer eventually) and they will make money. But, according to Smith, they aren’t the primary cause of the scarcity or the pricing. (As a side note: remember that many will speculate in stuff that turns out to be worthless, too.)
