Horns really make charr look like cows for me. So tupid. Even more so, because a lot of charr players tend to choose “zebra” colours.
Feline? More like herbivore.
Ever been to Ebonhawk?
My biggest problem is PvE.
CC doesn’t really work in dungeons. Turrets die from 1 aoe and don’t help at all. Our support options are more risk with little to no reward.
I can live without versatility there. But I want at least one good DPS spec for engi, with autoatack and thief- or warrior-like damage.
For some reason you can’t just sit on top of a keep fighting, you get killed doing that. Engineers can try to throw nades from the top of a keep
Actually, you still need to be on the edge of the wall to throw grenades, the same as with rifle. Stupid, yeah, but this is how the game works.
And again – every class can swap weapons.
This is not “versatility”, this is core game mechanics. It’s not something unique to engineers. If you can’t see that, i guess I can’t help you.
Well, Lovers is all about exploiting AI and doors. Meh =\
While I agree with you points, OP, I have doubts about the Anet’s ability to make exploit-proof content. And even if they will do it, it will be mostly ignored. Cause you know, cof speedruns.
My build is dual pistols with elixirs, but I can easily change it to pistol/shield or flamethrower or elixir.
So?
Again, all professions can change weapons. That’s not versatility. You’re not suddenly going from supporter to tank to dps. And no, 200 toughness don’t make you a tank.
If I go with rifle, I go all the way across with the power line so I can get more damage and switch out to nades if I want.
Still changing from dps to dps.
Where is the versatility? Your examples are what other classes do just by pressing swap weapon button.
It will be fixed. Developers said that weapon stats will effect kits in the future patches.
No. You can’t really change your setup without trait reset. Because all viable builds are based on certain trait allocation, instead of kit swapping.
And changing gear outside of combat can be applied to every profession, you can’t really define versatility on this.
Dear Enginners… etc. etc.
You need to undestand that spamming grenades 1 and 2 is ALL of our supposedly high damage. While other professions has more skills to do damage with. Please tell us how much damage you can deal through all of your damage rotation.
Err, have your facts straight.
R breaks any hard CC – stun, daze, knockdown. That’s what stun breaker means.
I love how people don’t even know the basic game mechanics.
It’s the medium karma set from Orr temples.
These folks must be real fun to do PvE with.
Yeah!
Full party with guards/warrs can rule evry single dungeon as no other party can imo.
Let’s just call all professions besides War and Guard useless in PvE then.
Nice video! Really liked the first song)
Loled at engi with grenades in the beginning. Also a nice engi vs engi duel.
And btw, how do you fight vs conditions?
Please, when you tell that you’re not using R, tell us what are you using instead and why.
I’m really curious and want to see how people are using engi currently.
Just don’t compare any other profession in PvE to Guardian and Warrior, they are currently god-tier.
I really hate this logic. One of the worst ways to act.
“So what will you do when you hear a volcano erupting? That’s right. Duck and cover.”
And then you run into the folks who rage that Mesmer is garbage for PvE, totally useless etc etc, had a few holler at me before even grouping.
I dunno where is that coming from lol.
From talks with high-tier dungeon runners, they all agree that mesmer is a really nice addition to almost any group. The thing is, his tricks work in PvE as effectively as in PvP (unlike the engi’s CC for example). And mesmer has some really nice team-oriented utility skills.
On the other, I’m rarely seeing a msmer in dungeons. Most of them are playing PvP only, so I guess people just don’t know what to expect from mesmers.
As a mainly engi PvE player I’d say engi is somewhere at the bottom of professions.
Despite some people calling it “ok”, it is not.
While a really good engi can deal DPS (and I really mean sustained damage per second, not the burst spike) comparable to really slacking warrior or thief, it comes at a cost of neglecting everything else. So much for versatility.
Engi can permanently stack a lot of vulnerability. So it is an ok choice for dungeons. We’re kinda somewhere along necros, but more focused on direct damage rather then conditions. Like some pretty little sidekicks, living only to make numbers of Holy Warrior even bigger. The problem is, it is still a bad balance.
In WvW engi is in a good spot, methinks. A lot of CC+stun breakers+position control, a decent kit for a crafty player.
Don’t know much about sPvP.
As for the other professions, the holy trinity of GW2 in PvE is:
1. Guardian;
2. Warrior;
3. Mesmer.
With thief, necro and engi sharing a spot of ocassionaly usefull profession.
With ranger not wanted by any dungeon group ever.
That usually leaves me with 1 slot. Choosing whether to raise some bads or take another utility becomes a real decision.
So, what are the alternatives? It’s not like we have any op dmg utilities.
Really usefull site. More players should know about it.
You don’t need to use R only for ranged res. You can run to a downed player, drop R and then res. This is turboresing, you can bring people up in less than 1 sec that way. Really usefull for hose situations when someone is downed inside AOE or group of mobs.
Isslair: You’re mixing the U and R elixir
No. I’m not. R has 40 seconds CD (even less with traits), U has 60.
And really, that 5 seconds of quickness is like 5 more #1 attacks. With a ~50 seconds cooldown. In a pure theorycrafting environment – yes this is DPS increase. But in reality dodging and surviving is far more important.
Well, I hope you’ve always wanted to be a humorous sidekick.
What in the hell are you doing that takes 260 hours to level to 80.
I guess he meant he spent 260 hours playing engi after he got to lvl 80. =\
But it IS medicore at best. AND you need to go full-DPS to get such numbers. It’s not like we can grab pow\vit\toughness and deal same damage. AND we’re sacrifising an utility slot for it. AND it’s all based on a single build (versatile mah kitten). AND you don’t have an autoattack.
Well if you’re DPS-oriented PvE engi, unless you’re SD, you’re going to have HGH. That’s how engi works currently. And that means you use elixirs. Elixir R don’t have cast time, refills endurance, breaks stuns and has turboresing bonus.
It’s a pretty solid choice in my opinion. Yeah not a “must have” like OP said but not something to be ignored either.
I’m so used to it right now (to utility elixir, not toolbelt skill) that I’m feeling kinda crippled without it.
What are other options for HGH engi? U – has a long cooldown and kinda “meh” effect. S – again long CD and you can just dodge two more times (I still use it in some cases though). C – is more for PvP, there’s no real condition spam in dungeons and you have 409 anyways.
Certainly nothing to boast about.
Medicore from all perspectives.
I guess you’re just one of those persons who don’t excel at anything and is okay with others carrying you. Well, GW2 is a game for everyone.
Elixir R gives 2 stacks of might and helps surviving to countinue DPSing. Sound like a good deal to me.
Not for every build, can’t argue with that, but a solid skill anyways.
doesn’t cost any kind of resources
Do any of GW2 skills cost any kind of resources? As far as I know 95% are based on cooldowns. No mana and stuff.
And engi don’t have any resource system (like adrenaline or clones) anyways. Just a remark though.
I use elixir R all the time. It’s really nice both for turboresing or remote resing.
And it’s not only about toolbelt skill. Elixir R itself is pretty amazing. If you’ll ever do enough damage with your “support” engineers to aggro a mob you’ll know how much you need to dodge.
I actually saw another engi in fractals only once (!) and he was using R too. So I dunno what are you talking about.
(edited by Isslair.4908)
Yeah, that’s another problem in PvP. Removing conditions is kinda easy and the damage is too slow. Burst is the king there.
But I was talking mainly about PvE. There’s afair only one boss (SE story) that counters conditions. But the whole principle of all professons having the same conditions really hinders condition damage.
The bottom line is – only make females for light armor. Sad truth.
The only issue is that elixirs toolbelt skills don’t really work with SD. And that if you’re already using grenades+might stacking, using SD on top of it is kinda hard. You’ll need to mash even more buttons, while still having to dodge agony and stuff. I don’t think you can use it effectively, even if elixirs did work with SD.
I kinda want conditions built to become viable, since using conditions for damage gives you more time to dodge, move and do stuff. And that’s really important in higher dungeons.
But almost every profession have some bleeds incorporated into default rotation. And warriors stack bleeds like there’s no tomorrow.
Poison and burn are not that great to begin with. And if you have guardian in your party (and you should) thats kittenload of burns from him alone. So yeah.
In my experience, bosses always have max condition stacks without me adding some.
It’s kinda a specilazied build that needs to have party built around it. But it might work I guess.
About WvW. I made my monthly 50 kills with my lvl 20+ warrior.
So you can play there even on low levels. Especially so if you have a guild to play with. And you don’t even need to go to dungeons to get gear.
But I kinda agree that there’s no point doing low level events.
On the other hand, it’s a player issue. They will always find some best place to farm and focus on it.
Yeah, the lack of engineerish armors is sad.
SE’s set is ok but it’s only one set. And it’s not really suited for every engi, only for like FT and bombs.
The irony is we have a nice looking engi in our Tools trait picture lol. But nothing similar in-game.
(edited by Isslair.4908)
What about CoE armors? They’re kinda thief-y.
why are you taking it out on a fellow gamer? Is i somehow his fault?
No one’s taking it out on a players. On builds – yes.
Or do you prefer to have a bad build and be a fifth wheel to your party, rather than hear that your build is bad and you should change it?
We’re engineers, we should be all about maximizing efficiency. Not about self-praizing.
Define interesting. It’s a broad term.
Well, I enjoy my thief, mesmer and guardian alts the most. Thief and mesmer are great in pvp and have a lot of different ways to do same things. But not exactly broad specialists. Guardian has a lot of options from full dps, to full tank, to full heal. Dunno ‘bout guardian’s pvp much though.
Warriors are too straightforward ( though I’m leveling one anyways) and have some problems in pvp (or so I heard). Elementalists too squishy to my liking, but surely versatile due to attunements swapping.
Necro was kinda dull. And I don’t like conditions, so it may differ for you.
Never tried ranger.

“Have fun” as in “please proceed to create more bad reputation for our profession”?
I think it is more important to show people current viable builds. Not to encourage them to continue being subpar.
Well, it’s not really important how to kill trash mobs. On the other hand bosses tend to attack slowly. And that’s where turrets really suck dropping from 1 aoe.
And I kinda think that making enemy to waste one of his powerful skills to kill a turret is a good enough investment.
Just my thoughts anyways. Not insisting or anything.
Well a nice way to fix turrets would be to give them a layered shield (like the one on fire shaman in grawl fractal) instead of the regular hp. So no matter what your damage is you’ll need to hit turrets N number of times anyways.
This solves the problem of scaling – turrets will have the same amount of “lives” at any level, while still being killable and counterable in pvp.
Well, you can just look at thief as a class. Ignore the whole pvp OP controversy and just look at his traits.
When I play my thief alt I want almost every single trait. They all have uses. All have some synergy with real gameplay. And I want ot have even more trait-points.
Compare this to engi. Picking traits for engineer is like looking for something usefull in a junk pile. We kinda need to invent something out of the few medicore traits we’re given.
Yeah it seems very engineerish. But it’s nowhere near a good class design. No wonder we’re angry. We’re like bums of GW2.
but we play for the style, not the numbers.
Well yeah. It’s not like we have a choice.
But you make it sound like a good thing and something not in need of addressing.
Even if you are playing just for the style doesn’t mean you can be bad for your party and slow them down with bad build.
Well, you’re free to use any build you want. We can’t enforcce something)
BUT
If you try to share this build, you need to realize that it needs to be viable or competitive. And be prepared for feedback. Forum is for builds people should use to maximize their performance, not for “fun” builds.
There’s a sticky thread for posting random builds – you can post there if you just want to show your fun build.
Please describe how to reliably get stability\protection. Just because you have a chance to get them doesn’t mean you will get them. Such a self-delusion.
“Occasional” is the key word here. In a situation where your survivability is at stake you need those buffs with 100% probability.
I have all boons in game on me when in fight. But that’s because I’m playing in a competent party with guardians, elementalists and other usefull professions. Not because I’m an engi.
