Guild Missions [merged]

I have one more question – When the Mission starts, are you supposed to run blind through 15 different zones, to find where your mob is … or is it supposed to say “Your NPC is somewhere in whichever place” ?

We did our first one today … and threw away the Influence, thank you ANet as it did not give us a destination, or send us anywhere, we had to run about blindly trying desperately to find an NPC. We started with 10 minutes NOT 15 minutes … and we eventually found the NPC at the fourth place with 1 minute to spare. Needless to say, 6 of us could not do it in that time.

Our guild DPR tried doing T1 bounty for the first time yesterday with our sister guild FIST so we had 2 goes at it back to back and again today. What we do is send out scouts to all 15 zones to track down the NPC’s. When we have them all, we pop the bounty and ping the nearest waypoints for the 2 we get. Everyone but those 2 scouts waypoints to one and kills it. Then we waypoint to the other and kill it. This should work as you move up to T2 or T3 as well, just may need more people to kill at the same time.

The first 2 times we failed because we didn’t know what we were doing. Today we were 2 for 2. If you had enough people you could just pop it and zone to different waypoints on those 2 maps but we didn’t want to chance that. Hopefully this method can help others. I know Obey who is another large guild on FA with us does the same thing.

Admittedly I didn’t read each and every post in that thread, but the thread seems to be about the player losing track of the cursor or the cursor disappearing from the screen. I have noticed that too, but my issue is that the mouse becomes temporarily detached from the game. It’s like GW2 gives up its mouse focus and lets the mouse run free on my Windows desktop until I click on the game window again. Does that make sense?

Makes sense. I run GW2 in windowed mode on a single screen so I can also view a browser with the wiki, timers, maps, etc. Very often the cursor disappears from the screen almost as if it is bouncing to the desktop rather than the window. I thought maybe it was a related issue and there is just a problem with the cursor period in the game.

A one time award per character of 60 tokens for story mode would seem appropriate. It wets the appetite for explorable mode and because it’s one time, can’t be farmed. I would probably be more likely to take alts and help guildies in story mode.

DR? (Diminished Returns)

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

JK Arrow.7102

I would be interested in discussing some of the gameplay activities that could impact the economy and that DR is supposed to address and whether that is still the case.

Bot farmers – DR addresses continuous farming in a specific area. And due to the playerbase reporting and Anet’s actions, the amount of bots operating in this manner has drastically been reduced.

Dungeon running – DR addressed, and after changes to a different degree addresses continuous running of the same path on the same character.

Karma farming – DR addresses repeated event farming. Although karma is account bound currency so there has always been a debate as to why this should be diminished in the first place. Newly introduced karma items however, make the case that karma = gold.

Node bots – DR does not help curtail this.

It’s the side affects of this that seem to be causing concern with players. And most likely our own misunderstanding of the mechanics makes it worse.

Dragon chests – Players parking characters at an event will hit DR even if other activities are done before and after on a different character

Long play periods – Players report receiving reduced karma, rewards, drops etc after playing for several continuous hours even if their activities change

Dungeon rewards – Players report different DR mechanics for tokens at the account level

Normal play – Players that leave characters in a zone rather than zoning out experience DR faster

Whether or not all of these are true is still up for debate. But what I’m getting at is DR really helping to prevent the major sources of economic exploit through game play working as intended?

(Note: This was quickly throw together so I’m sure there are other issues I didn’t consider. I can edit this later. And perhaps this should be it’s own thread.)

Since the devs said they checked the loot tables and the triggers and everything appears in order for the drop to occur, I would find it interesting to see how many times in say the past month that particular chest/boss was looted by players. If that number is something ridiculous like 30, then we know that event is extremely rare or in an area where players do not often play. If that number is more like 25,000 then we know the drop rate is just miniscule. It doesn’t really give us any specific detail on where to go but I’m just curious.

Are Legendary Weapons Symbols of Achievment?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: JK Arrow.7102

JK Arrow.7102

It’s a purely subjective matter whether legendaries are a symbol of achievement. I can easily see why someone who spent a great deal of time gathering everything to create a legendary would see it as a symbol of achievement, and I can also see how others think it is not since they are readily available for sale on the trading post. But I feel that in reality, they are more like symbols of wealth, as it takes a great deal of gold to buy one off the trading post or gather all the necessary materials to craft one for yourself.

Either way you go about it, it is a significant gold sink to any player and in this way they play a similar role that Obsidian armor had in GW1 as a status symbol. Not saying this is a bad thing, and in fact, I don’t really mind it at all because legendaries ultimately boil down to being a cosmetic item and nothing more.

A legendary weapon in GW2 is much different to obtain than Obby from GW1. On one hand you could flat out buy all the mats needed to craft Obby so it didn’t prove you were a master of UW and FoW. On the other hand, you could also farm all the mats needed yourself in a reasonable amount of time. The same can not be said for legendaries.

Acquiring a precursor through the MF is already insane grinding unless you are very lucky. I mean where do you get all those rares to throw in? Either from running dungeons for exotics(which are anywhere from 200-390 tokens) or farming mats to make rares or farm gold to buy rares off the TP. Regardless, unless you are just doing 1 try a day, it will require you grind. And how the hell can legendaries become more devalued than they already are? I mean for christ’s sake gold sellers sell em as well as being able to buy em off the TP.

Believe me, they can. As you said, the only thing preventing further devaluation is the precursors not being readily available after only a few months of grinding. But guess what – right now they totally are. Grind gold and get one… easy.

My personal opinion is that the precursors should be:

1. Account bound on acquire (no TP listing possible)
2. Awarded for completing an extremely difficult, multi-tiered, multi-skillset challenge. Something only a select few can accomplish via gaming skill. And I mean only a few. Like 1 in 300 people or something like that
3. Available via really, really low RNG as an alternative, because having luck in the world just makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I can guarantee you people would be complaining ten times as much as they do now though.

My question is why make legendaries so rare that only 1 in 300 people get em? I mean all they are is a skin. Who cares if someone else has one. I mean look at everything else in the game, everyone can get it and it’s an MMO where no one is actually a unique snowflake. I mean if you want to be semi unique, play an MMO that has hardcore raiding and join the top raiding guild and devote 8 hours a night to raiding. This game doesn’t have raiding vs casual so i’m guessing you want the legnedary to be the status symbol that differentiate the casual from the hardcore?

The very reason people want them is because they are not everywhere. You have many cool skins in the game, some arguably way more cool than legendaries, and yet you don’t see people clamoring about those. Why? Because anyone can get them with relative ease and there isn’t much of a prestige factor tied to them.

Make legendaries common and nobody will care. Make them common and actually wearing one will become cheesy and unwanted even. It’s like a Super syndrome… everyone wants to be Super – but when everyone’s Super, no one is.

People want legendaries because they have shiny pixels, footsteps, and swirly twirlies. They look different than other skins. Not just because they are rare. Oh, and the fact there is an achievement for it and an icon on the character select screen staring at you every time you log in.

And if everyone has Twillight, how different from other Twillights is it? It becomes a very shiny, very boring item nobody cares about. Rarity translates directly to value. Humans are like that. Prestige means exclusivity, the particle effects are there just to make it more obvious who has it and who doesn’t.

I was unaware the “prestige” meant exclusivity. I was more under the impression that is was admiration or respect for achievement or quality.

Nope, it isn’t. Prestige stems, basically, from having stuff other people don’t have. Doesn’t sound all noble and pretty, but that’s humans for you.

GW2 is a prime example. It takes literally NO skill whatsoever to get a legendary, and yet those items are highly wanted for their prestige value. Simply because they are hard to get and/or relatively rare.

That may be true for some people but it’s not true for all people. I buy things in MMO’s because I like the way they look, not because they are rare. In fact I’ve even considered just making an exotic whose skin I like better than the legendary. If not for the fact that legendary stats will be better eventually I would have made it already.

Same outcome but it’s because you are forcing the weapon swap. You are specifically pulling out a weapon when you use a kit which would swap out of your gathering tool as you gather. The issue we notice is an involuntary swap.

And you do know that if the boss dies while you’re defeated, you get nothing from it, no matter how much damage you did.

Did this always used to happen? I noticed yesterday during a TA run, I died literally seconds before the boss was downed and got nothing from the boss itself, missing out on one of those bags. Sucks if this is intentional.

I can’t say if it was always like this or not. Either way, this is a terrible side affect of this new mechanic. I found out about it the other night when I didn’t get squat when I was already dead as a boss died.

and in AC when you get pushed threw the door on path 1 defending hodgins while killing burrows, if you could WP it would be fare but no! now you have to deal with 1 man down.

I haven’t ran AC since the update but never thought of this scenario. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen. We normally don’t have a problem killing the burrows but it is another side affect to consider.

Are Legendary Weapons Symbols of Achievment?

in Black Lion Trading Co

JK Arrow.7102

So sum things up, Legendary weapons are a symbol time and dedication to 1) gathering the mats to craft it or 2) making enough money to buy one. Regardless of which path you fall in, it’s still very impressive of a feat to pull off.

And most complainers are just jealous they don’t have the time and dedication to get their own Legendary in break neck speeds. Heaven forbid they get their own Legendary a year or two from now… as it was intended.

I think you make an interesting point about the timeframe. If people took a while through game play to earn a legendary, more people would feel they really are legendary.

The issue remains thought that (dare I say) nobody that currently has one has earned it through normal game play activities? So far every person I’ve seen that says they are proud of one adds a comment such as: after months of farming, grinding out loadstones, 8 hours of Orr a day, flipping on the TP, etc…

If the design decisions to make legendaries forced the time frame needed to be longer but more fullfilling, they might hold more value. But by making all but a handful of components purchasable, it became a race of who can get the most coin.

I think it was a huge mistake to not include more soulbound or accountbound awards given through in-game play. More components like 100% world completion rather than stacks and stacks of stuff to buy off the TP.

I’ll continue to work on one at my own pace but I really don’t like the way they are currently obtained.

This post use to be MUUUUUCH worse before I noticed Ursan has over 4k achievement pts and is in a dungeon at 6 am which rendered most of the old post almost certainly wrong. My bad.

I think I know where you were going with this but honestly I don’t think it matters in the way you were thinking. And the rest of my post isn’t pointed at you but rather those out there that want a real life example of a player who would like to some day complete the Legendary achievement.

I’ve played for about 900 hours since launch. I have more than 4k pts. I have 2 80’s, a 65, and 5 50’s. I have 1 set of exotic armor and no fancy weapons. I have 1 craft left to do for master crafter. I’m a hoarder by nature and keep most of the mats I get. I buy a few things here and there that seem cheap to me. I sell drops worth selling on the TP. I play dungeons, open world, do my daily every day, and all my characters are at lvl appropriate story. I would say I am what Anet would call a typical player for their game. Perhaps even above average in terms of skill and time spent.

You know what? I don’t even have the gold achievement yet on my account which is 200g.

What bothers people like me is when TP warriors show up in their commander icon and T3 with Legendaries and say how good they are at GW2. They brag at how leet they are and that I should learn to play better.

Players like me don’t want things handed to them. But if the carrot on the stick keeps inching further as they progress it leads to frustration.

It just saddens me that the best way to obtain wealth and acknowledgement in this MMORPG is to not actually play the fun content with others but to play the TP alone.

Dungeon Patch Discussion 1/28

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: JK Arrow.7102

JK Arrow.7102

I don’t mind the idea of eliminating rez-rushing but I think the multi step approach to it is what is causing some issues. In certain dungeons TA, SE where there are limited waypoints it gets to be a frustrating run back to the fight after death. I know this is being fixed but I think it should have been done at the same time.

The bigger issue I have is that there is an increased importance on ressing while nothing was done to allow it better/easier/faster. Someone else mentioned the limited use of res skills which mostly work from a downed state only. Ressing in combat takes 3 times longer than out of combat. And most times, an enemy will continue to target a player that is downed or will retarget to the ressing player.

I actually said during a recent guild run that I wasn’t going to res any more during the run because the only time I would die is if I tried to res someone. Too often I ended up getting downed from adjacent AoE or an attack while trying to res a downed person. I was better off letting that person die and continuing to DPS. I don’t think that’s the intent of the patch nor of the game’s design.

Hopefully once phases 2, 3, 4 etc of this are implimented it will sort itself out but in the mean time there will be much frustration.

Here is what I think is happening. When you run up to a node and begin gathering you sheath your weapon and pull out your gathering tool. If you are then hit while gathering and enter combat, you pull out your weapon but continue gathering. The game thinks you are now gathering with too poor of quality tool and returns ruined items.

I’m not sure why I don’t get this on other professions though…they will continue to gather with the tool while being attacked and never take out their weapons.

So. I noticed something while looking at the pvp locker today. The staff comes in between the molten and bramble staffs. Now, the pvp locker orders items in basically the same way every time (bramble -> molten) is the usual way.

There are a few other items that also come between bramble and molten for their respective weapon type.

PvP Gladius – Honor of humanity Skin
PvP Nobles axe – Phoenix Talon skin
PvP Frog scepter – Anura Skin
Oddly enough all 3 of these skins are similar to ones found in GW1 (Gladius, Gemstone Axe, and Frog scepter respectively)

Unfortunately there doesnt seem to be anything that ties them together besides that they all come from the mystic forge.

Anura was listed as coming from TA though. If we were to assume the other weapons could also come from dungeons, nobles axe would be CM and gladius probably AC. Which would add credence to the theory that final rest comes from Arah.

I got an Anura a few months ago from a random mob in Orr doing Penitent or Jofast, can’t remember which. So I’m not sure this has any connection.

We had about 125 members in our guild on FA. I would say about 40-50 of them are active (logging on at least weekly) and 80% of them represent a majority of the time.

We had a GW1 alliance we tried re-creating in GW2. Because of the limitations, we compromised by consolidating guilds and by having a few officers and members from each guild become members in the other guild. These people will jump back and forth between guilds to round out groups for dungeons, wvw, fotm, etc. We also share Vent and TS. It’s the best method we could come up with but doesn’t facilitate communication like the alliance system did.

While leveling up it can be annoying as you jump through zones with different level nodes. But it’s not that bad. If you happen to throw away that copper pick with 57 uses left, so what…it’s maybe 30c down the tubes. Next time you need to waypoint, run for 30 seconds and you’ve made up the difference.

The other thing I’ll mention is that with higher level tools, it would be assumed you are harvesting more valuable materials. That’s not always the case. I may use a mithril charge for a copper node if I’m near one but I probably won’t bother with an iron one. That’s not really a problem of the gathering mechanic though.

And on that topic, I would be curious to know if the main opponents of skipping ever run past mobs in the open world. If the answer is yes, then I don’t think they can argue against it in a dungeon. If they always kill every mob they encounter, then they have a position to agrue (albeit one that is in the significant minority).

There is a clear difference between the open world and a dungeon, and it lies within their reward systems.

Dungeons are all about starting at point A, and ultimately getting to point B and killing a boss. You are rewarded based on an expectation that this will take a minimum amount of time. GW2 mobs do a very bad job at stopping you from running past them, so it is easy to get below this expected minimum. This leaves the reward-to-effort ratio very high, and this is probably not good for the overall health of the game. Dungeon DR working the way it does suggests that ArenaNet feels the same.

The open world rewards you in small increments. You generally have to do small things constantly to earn small rewards. For the most part, this involves combat. You are not usually rewarded for avoiding monsters. The only thing I can think of where that is not the case are chests, where you can double-tap your loot key to get all the loot and avoid the mob guarding it, but that’s more of a bug than anything.

I think it’s all the same. In the open world I too am going from point A to point B in order to achieve something. If my goal is to gather Ori in CS, should I fight every Risin on my way from node to node? I don’t see the difference.

New Sub-based Economy Site, ok with ANet?

I would think Anet will have an issue with this. It’s one thing to ask for donations for time/servers/etc. but a sub based on someone else’s property seems like it might be a problem…

I can see both sides of the argument. When my guild does dungeons, sometimes we skip stuff, sometimes we kill things. If one person decides for the heck of it to charge into a group and swing away, the others jump in too. That said, I think you have to look at why we are doing a specific dungeon rather than any other content at that moment.

Usually a dungeon is done for some quick cash and specific dungeon tokens. It generally does not make sense to skip any boss lvl enemies that drop significant coins though as the amount earned is in good proportion to the time taken to kill them. But if the main goal is the tokens, why would anyone spend any more time in the dungeon than is necessary to get the tokens? Is the killing of mobs there any different than spending time killing mobs in the open world?

And on that topic, I would be curious to know if the main opponents of skipping ever run past mobs in the open world. If the answer is yes, then I don’t think they can argue against it in a dungeon. I have one of each class spread across all 5 races. In fact, the gems for the char slots were the first things I saved for with in game gold. I wanted to play all 5 story lines and I wanted all the classes in case certain ones were best at certain things.

Currently – lvl 80 war (main), lvl 80 necro, lvl 50+ guard, ele, thief, & engi, lvl 30 ranger, and lvl 25 mesmer

I’m playing through the storylines on every one as they level and trying to mix and match my selection of attitude choices and Vigil, Priory, OoW choices as well. It’s fun to experience as much of the game and story lines as possible.

the immediate question that comes up is: Do players who spend more time in game have more wealth because they play more, or are they more efficient because they’re really good at the game or both.

I’d say neither. The people that have more wealth are those that spend more time on a few, very specific activities (namely: farming and TP playing). If you do anything else, you accumulate wealth very slowly, if any. If you are good at the game, it also doesn’t make you any more efficient, since neither of wealth-gaining activities require any skill whatsoever (well, any skill at the game. TP playing does require some ability, but it is an ability completely unconnected to the game).

I think it may even be fair to eliminate farming and say active TP players have by far the most wealth. The amount of gold earned by farming or playing the game seems very linear with a blip or two thrown in due to RNG on something like a precursor. The amount of gold earned off the TP can be exponential. There are probably a substantial amount of players with 1000G+ who have never finished the final mission, got 100% world completion, or gasp hit level 80…

Recipes are account bound and require lvl 400 Jeweler as well as lvl 80. I got Eternal Flame from CoF and had to level my 400 Jeweler to lvl 80 in order to use it.

You can already get a free Spidy like app for your Android. All they need to do is allow the addition of a login and add buy & sell buttons.

LOL like I have any clue what it actually takes to build the app…

Why 1000+ Omnomberry Bars on the TP?

What I don’t understand is why people sell them instead of using them. One run through a dungeon like AC with a bar and you make 3-4 times back what you spent on it.

Ectos weren’t an official monetary system in GW1 although they became a very commonly used trading mechanic. You have to look back at why that actually occured. Trades were limited to 7 items and up to 100k (plat) in value. For trades involving items valued over 100k, the community deemed ectos (and also Zkeys and armbraces) to be used.
