Endless Petrification Tonic
(edited by Jabberwock.9014)
Monocles and recipe orders filled very slowly for me. You must have put the buy orders on the first day when people were actually running the dungeon. This is nothing like dragon wings where supply is consistent due to dropping off of every mob everywhere. Very few people are still running this dungeon and even fewer are farming it since it is way too long and unpredictable (could end up wiping on laser boss many times) and has no unique reward (not needed for meta achievement).
Any item which is unfarmable, unique, very low supply, and limited time skyrockets in price. Just look at flame and frost dyes. And these monocles have even less supply than those, with consistent supply below 20 (!) on the tp since their arrival. Compare this to over 1000 dragon wings on trading post and you can see the difference. With the weekend coming to a close supply influx is going to tank even more to nearly 0, while demand will rise after seeing it’s not another dragon wing debacle.

I would be happy if they got rid of ele if they let us change class and legendary. I’m seeing less and less point every day to logging in with mine. Mediocre in PvE, mediocre in WvW, mediocre in sPvP. At least with another class I’ll be good in one of them.
As expected, the tiny supply of monocles is being bought out and prices are rising fast. A combination of extremely low drop rate and a long, hard, and unfarmable dungeon that most people only played on release day all led to the ridiculously low supply of this item. Additionally, I bet prices were artificially low to begin with due to people getting burned on dragon wings (obvious in hindsight since they don’t require you to farm a specific place to get). Any bets on how high prices on monocles will go?
Also, I have a feeling infinite aetherized tonic recipes will spike before or at end of the event, for the same reasons and this: the tonic recipe is so costly (50 charged lodestones) that even with a very high recipe cost it will still end up cheaper to buy the recipe and make the tonic yourself than buy the tonic directly off the tp. To illustrate, the current cost of the tonic on the tp is 170g while creating the tonic costs only 148g or less with buy orders of ingredients. That means the recipe is worth 22g currently, but is going for only 1g on the tp.

They are nerfing fgs mobility? Wut? That’s it, I quit. That’s just about the only thing that elite is good for and the only thing that makes our mobility in wvw bearable. God forbid an elite skill with a 180 second cooldown and rooted summoning makes us temporarily fast enough to escape most classes.
Berserker wars in hotjoin do kitten me off to no end. All they do is bulls rush, frenzy, 100b, whirlwind through everybody and then run away with greatsword 5 and 3 (optionally sword 2), racking up points while their teammates do the rest of the work. Not saying they are good but my god is it annoying when I just want to kill one but he runs away with no hope of catching him.
Condition meta is out of control, and I don’t see an easy way to fix it. The more conditions stacked the harder it is to cleanse, and conditions do way too much damage when left uncleansed. The whole reason conditions do so much in the first place is because they are supposed to be cleansed quickly, but with stacked necros and engies there is no way to cleanse. It is really horrible design when conditions can burst you down faster than direct damage. And conditions only require ONE stat to function well, so we can have tanks putting out better damage than glass canons.
How much you want to bet that this is the only thread that will get a dev response?
-Ranged aoe damage
That would probably go to Necromancers.
(But I agree with the other one!)Or grenade specced engineers. or mesmers with glamour skills (quickness AoE?).
May I also note that the elementalist don’t get retaliation, quickness, aegis. OR give fear- torment – poison etc. All very usefull boons and conditions. Thus I conclude that we can’t do everything. Therefore we aren’t a jack of all traits we’re just worst or 5th place at anything we do.
Also forgot to mention the lowest health pool and light armor, take away our mobility after disabling bunkers means we’ll be on deathrow.
This so much. We are not even jack of all trades yet we are still relegated to sucking at what we can do for no reason other than the myth that we are too versatile. We only get the most generic conditions and boons and even then not in enough quantity to mean anything. Fear, stealth and aegis are among the strongest mechanics in the game and we have absolutely no access to them.
It would be a lot more useful as a clutch stunbreak if it did indeed do this. They should just make it default to pbaoe if you have no target selected.
this was an interesting video
let me hop in my time machine to half a year ago, when it may have been relevanti enjoyed the career politician breakdown of how neat elementalist is
omg did you know eles are so FUN that they can use blast finishers inside of fields for mediocre support? If you use one in your static field you might even be able to outrun a necro if they don’t cripple or chill you! How swell!
I don’t think anet realizes that “jack of all trades” is a derogatory term. In mmos where min/max is the law of the land, there is no room for a class that doesn’t do anything better than another class.
It is a real problem if they consciously base our nerfs and buffs based on whether or not we will end up better than another class, while not holding other classes to the same standard. Inevitably they nerf us too much while letting op builds of others slide because “hey, that’s what they are good at”. That’s how we ended up with the current necromancer condition apocalypse (two damaging conditions added to one already condition heavy class in one patch is somehow seen as a good idea).

I also feel like burning precision might be better than ember’s might since otherwise you don’t get much burning outside of fire (and without burning you won’t get anything from ember’s might OR burning rage).
Except you won’t have that trait with only 10 in water.
Necros naturally have highest hp in game, a second health bar (with ridiculous sustain from spectral armor), and can take amulets with defensive stats since condition damage only relies on one stat. If that’s not tanky I don’t know what is.
At least Necros aren’t going to be killed last anymore.
We’ll get the honours of being killed first.
Which is horrible balance… being forced to kill a tank first is just bad. Glass cannon nukers are supposed to be top priority to kill in any game, but condition necros put out so much pressure even with tank stats that they need to be dealt with immediately.
Let’s check the op-meter:
1. Max health in game – check
2. Second life bar – check
3. Defensive amulets with condition damage – check
4. Best duration damaging condition stacking in game – check
5. Massive aoe – check
5. Chain fearing – check
6. Unblockable torment and epidemic madness – check
Necros have been spoiled with people thinking they were underpowered for so long, so now that necros are op they feel like they have some divine right to be. They never were bad and have been getting better with nerfs to other classes. Condition stacking was already meta before this patch and for whatever reason Anet saw fit to make it even more ridiculously effective.
If your teammates don’t stack full vulnerability I would rather do 30/30/0/10/0. For grandmaster air trait take air training and use lightning hammer in air attunement. You get vulnerability stacking, +10% damage in air, +10% crit damage (almost as good as +10% damage with high crit) and 100 precision for even better crit rate. You’ll be doing more damage when not using lightning hammer and almost the same damage when you are.

Gotta say that stream confirmed my fears. No mention of health pool means they are not even thinking about it. He claims that we have so many “little things” but those little things are only worthwhile if you spec for it. For example, we have little good healing or defense in a glass cannon build no matter what “mode” we are in. Even if we switch to water or earth, a glass canon ele will die, and faster than any other class with our horrible mobility, health, and escape. Attunements aren’t nearly as versatile as Isaiah seems to believe, since they all reflect our traits and build and provide VERY LITTLE ACTIVE DEFENSE like stealth or clones. Even a necro has better defensive modes in plague form and death shroud. An offensive specced ele has very little defense or escapability, whether in fire or water.
He also claims that we should focus on direct AND condition damage, yet in doing so we have to neglect the holy dps trinity of power/prec/crit damage which multiplicatively stack, while condition damage gains and contributes nothing. Ascended gear exacerbates the problem since every further point of power/prec/crit damage gets more and more powerful the more you have invested in them, while condition damage remains static. I’d much rather get rid of all these superfluous conditions if it would give us a chance to get comparable dps to other classes. I feel like they have been balancing our dps qualitatively rather than quantitatively this whole time, since our direct damage + conditions look good on paper but suck in practice.
Honestly the supposed versatility of eles is a myth that never came to fruition. Ironically we are probably the least versatile class with no active defense and pigeonholed weaponsets and traits.
Also love how he recommends the 50s starcakes as ideal for elementalists. What great symbolism for the elementalist: put in 10 times as much as other classes just to try to keep up.

Where do they put the streams up?
Wow, if this is true I’m becoming more and more tempted to just uninstall this game and be done with it. Wasted a legend and 100g of dyes on my ele, and for what? A class that will never have a role, has terrible dps despite having the worst hp and armor and a FULL MELEE weaponset, and can be beaten by any class but a necro in a footrace. Brilliant.
Can anybody give a summary of his stream? In particular, did he say anything about our low health pool, and what specifically did he say about us being “jack of all trades, master of none”?
Why do we have the worst hp pool and armor in game but worse escape than thief and mesmer? Hit point buff in my opinion has been a long time coming, especially with all the recent nerfs to our escapability and bunker build (30 water and arcane bunker is the only build which gives us enough healing to compensate for super low hp and armor).

kitten I knew I should have bought more than one stack of saffron at 35c.
And the recipe makes 2 cakes so you need to halve the final price.

It’s not really obvious because complete armor sets haven’t been released since launch. They might want to keep the only armor set they’ve designed since then in game.
First Dev post on the ele forum since january. It’s a “Thanks” post for the 1 positive thread amongst the sea of justified criticism posts. Go figure. This shows how much anet simply loves to spit on the ele community.
qft
I was using zerk amulet with 0/30/0/20/20.
The dragon tooth tip is actually huge. Didn’t know you could do that, and with its low cooldown it should help a lot. The might stacking is icing on the cake.
Ok this is infuriating me… as D/D bunker I never had problems with any thieves and could kill any 1v1. However I’ve been trying glass cannon S/D with fresh air which is quite fun and is good as long as I don’t get focused down.
However how in the hell am I supposed to deal with stealth and shadowstep happy thieves? It is near impossible to maintain distance from them with all their shadowsteps. As soon as I cc them or burst them down to near death they stealth, heal almost completely, and then backstab me and daze me with tactical strike or petrify with basilisk venom. But unlike them once I am low on health I can’t just press the “oh kitten” stealth button and heal up. And S/D has so little cleaving compared to D/D so I can’t protect myself or try to hit them while they are stealthed without wasting phoenix and fire ring. How in god’s name are you supposed to deal with these kittens?
I’ve got a picture of a thief that was causing me a major headache in hotjoin. Maybe his build is not optimal for capturing points but for just random hotjoin battling how are you supposed to deal with it? He would stalk me randomly as I was traversing the map and burst me down from stealth (he had runes of ogre, sigils of fire and bloodlust and one more I forget), and even in fair starts it was near impossible to beat (once I almost killed him but a teammate intervened… but he probably would have stealth escaped anyways). He was rank 51 but still, I’ve beaten higher rank thieves before with D/D:
I know it’s in fort marinner but where in fort marinner? I’ve found a room with 2 prison cells and a room with a giant cage but none contain Mai (and I’ve beaten the dungeon).
It’s nice to be able to do damage and use active heals with arcane shield, and it fits better than mist form in fresh air build imo since you can use arcane cooldown reduction on arcane blast along with shield. The damage is a nice bonus too.
Maybe it was a mistake? They meant to remove the 24 non-damaging ones but accidentally removed the 48 damaging ones? If this does not change it is mind-bogglingly bad news giving that half of its effectiveness for me was in hitting structures since almost all meteors hit.
It’s incredibly annoying switching between my elementalist and warrior (or any other class) because the “weapon-swap” (attunement-swap) for elementalists uses the class mechanic buttons while warrior uses the standard weapon swap key. The current global key-bindings mean I either use an unnatural setup for war or I have to change bindings whenever changing characters. Please implement character specific key bindings so that I and others don’t have to put up with this completely unnecessary headache.
Can anybody tell us what the recipe is? I have a feeling those without the recipe are getting boned on the price atm.
I’ve been trying out fresh air with s/d and honestly I hate it. I’d rather just take 20% air skills cooldown and +10% air damage, since it is way to unreliable hoping for a crit without using an arcane skill. Not to mention half the time air recharges all the skills are on cooldown anyways.
Will the Aetherblade Armor skins be in the gem store permanently or will they go away sometime after the Aetherblade content ends?
Use pauldrons from a different set or hide them.
Great, just what we need, an ologopoly on a magic find recipe.
Hallelujah! The cooldown is still too long for my liking though… wonder if the auto-shield trait breaks stuns too.

Earth 4 (sink) and water 5 downwards into ground next to opponent. Every hit lands = instakill almost anything from full health. Only problem is if they dodge, go invuln, or interrupt you, you have to wait for cooldowns and do mediocre damage in the meantime. Signet of fire helps a bit.
Whirlpool is also good in glass cannon builds. You can really wreck unsuspecting groups with it.

Keep it in your own subforum, as you’ll get no sympathy from the rest of us non-mesmers. Phantasm mesmers were completely broken in small scale skirmishes (1v1 and 2v2) as you’ve already admitted. They were never hot stuff in team battles and never will be since phantasms get blown up so fast, so I can only assume you are upset you might actually have to use strategy to win a duel now. Phantasms are terribly designed skills that a monkey could use to good effect, so I’ll be glad to see them leaving the duel scene.
And cooldown reduction is NOT mandatory as you seem to believe. You may have been spoiled with the former cooldowns, but mesmers will still perform fine with 20% longer cooldowns on some skills, especially given many of them were already OP. No other class has a trait that reduces the cooldown of so many skills, so it is only fair you have to sacrifice some trait points to achieve it (and not even a major trait).
At current prices zhaitaffy sets a ceiling of 50g on wings. The lowest this ceiling can go is 10g and that is if zhaitaffy reaches 1 copper. Personally I don’t expect zhaitaffy to get this low due to helpful food you can buy with it, so I expect wings to spike somewhere between 15g to 25g near the end of the event and then fall back down for a while.
Water Magic
Minor Grandmaster Trait has been changed to deal 1% more damage for each boon on you.
This is actually a big nerf to d/d or am i seeing this wrong?
It’s a nerf to bunkers.
Well it has also made glass d/d even less viable compared to s/d, which is ironic since you’d expect our melee option to have the best dps. Thankfully I’m trying scepter seriously for the first time and finally getting to like it.
They probably (laughably) think the damage buff is worth 5 seconds. Ironically our blink is also way more noticeable than others due to the massive lightning bolt, making it even worse as an escape mechanism.
The only upside is travelling in pve will now be very slightly faster. But our mobility is still nothing compared to what it was before the ridiculous rtl cooldown nerf (in pve).
(edited by Jabberwock.9014)
Looks like you used ride the lightning (while immobilized), not mist form.
Hopefully lightning flash stunbreak nerf doesn’t make it through. That’s what I’m most worried about tbh.
Burning precision is a decent add to a crit scepter build imo. No cooldown timer and air autoattack hits many times in a short window, so that it is sure to proc at least once per channel (usually more).
They should just remove the tassels on most of them (at least one handed weapons). Terrible clipping when sheathed with them swinging all willy nilly into my character.
I still don’t understand why mesmer and ele hp isn’t the other way around. Mesmer have op escapability by class design and eles only get op healing by speccing full water and arcane. A glass canon ele is extremely kitten by our hp pool, while a glass cannon mes is just fine, even if they were to have less hp. And a better hp pool wouldn’t make healing builds much more op anyways, since max hp isn’t much of a concern when you can consistently keep a lower one near max with heals anyways.

Know who can edit the wiki? Anybody. That is why the wiki is wrong. Don’t you think it is just a little curious that the hair stylist contract is the only one with no stock, ever?
They only dropped from the wintersday gem boxes. That is why there hasn’t been one on the tp for so long. I have one and yes, you do get the special colors.
For an mmo where you can put thousands of hours into a character, permadeath isn’t really an option. I’m all for hardcore mode in campaign games with an end, but in a never-ending persistent world it’s out of place. Plus this game was designed with rezzing and waypointing in mind… it’s not really fair to have hardcore mode in a game where you can get one-shotted by a gang of crazed karka through no fault of your own.
