To respond to some questions and responses in this thread:
Zeal (just doesn’t work)
Zeal is useless because you either lose Honour and Virtues 5/5 on Burst and Virtues II on DPS. There is literally no reason to spec into Zeal due to this as you will lose tons of survivability, you can only do it with the Binding Jeopardy bunker build.Viability (a lot of the builds above aren’t close to optimized)
The Greatsword is actually one of the Guardians weaker weapons. All the skills are easy to dodge which means they’re usually used to force the enemy dodge rolls out so that you can hit them with skills on your other weapons. Of course you can have somebody else set up control so that you can land 100% of WW and then chain it will your pull. Outside of res/stomp control the GS isn’t strong unless paired with another player with a snare and is extremely reliant on Judges. A common misconception is that the GS is the highest damaging weapon and it is literally the lowest consistent damaging weapon. The Sword runs into extremely similar problems, if the enemy knows what they’re doing, ZD is going to never land. It’s EXTREMELY easy to dodge (even when paired with JI) which makes it extremely inconsistent, which is a trait not shared by Mace Burst Guards.
http://tinyurl.com/p9jab6g
You can land all the damage on a Mace burst build at the exact same time (14k minimum if everything is not in your favour and 20k+ if everything is) which effectively puts your burst at under 1 second. Although you lose Flashing blade, you gain a fully AoE burst which completely counters Mesmer builds and any form of summons while the Sword doesn’t.All Guardian weapons can be used in a DPS/Burst build, of course their are situational ones, but Guardian DPS is definitely viable you just have to think of how you are countered. Running things like II Zeal opens you up to massive vulnerabilities in your play and your damage has to be more compact in burst builds, don’t assume your skills are going to land. Against a good player if you think it’s dodgable it will be dodged.
I have made a build thread before with optimized builds:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Silven-s-PvP-Guardian-Build-Guide/firstNot sure I would go poking into the viability of others’ builds when you’ve got a big list of… interesting builds yourself in that thread. I mean, have you even used any of those DPS ones against a serious team? Like >200 LB? For example: http://tinyurl.com/bg5wm36 I see you take the CD reduction for Meditations when all you have is IJ, but no CD reduction for shouts and you have 2, and instead taking the pretty meh trait for symbols healing allies. For an Altruistic Healing build (which this is; a better symbol DPS build would incorporate Zeal since that’s where 2 of the 3 good symbol traits lie), I like Save Yourselves instead of the teleport from IJ; it combos better with AH, still stunbreaks, and gives you some great boons such as Fury and Vigor as well as good team utility for conditions. With a build like this, you’re really not going to be bursting someone down too fast, it’s much more of a support DPS build (AH works best in teamfights) and as such you really should tote around the maximum amount of condition removal (Soldier x6) instead of the awkward Mercy runes you have. So, here’s my corrected version of that build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQNAR5dlUgyC33xKEf4ERWhVi9AjasjXPc4DZIA-TwAg0CnIySllLLTWyssZNsYZxGiJBA
That’s just one example.
I do agree with some of what you’re saying
When your focus is putting the pressure on stomps/reses in team fights you do need the cooldown reduction on JI for it to be consistent enough. You can’t bring II for the shouts due to running symbol DPS an needing PoV for vigor, which Soldier’s does not give you. The reason I linked that build was for roaming between side and mid as a DPS Guardian which would change the usage of the build if you were to run what you posted.
The Mercy runes were part of the build that I was testing a while ago, I got slack with updating builds I was testing so yes that was a mistake. They are also meant to be used in conjunction with a Bunker so I wouldn’t use Soldier’s either way, rather Lyssa (which also means your build should be running accuracy>bloodlust).
You’re also not going to land WW without JI, which is another important thing I was trying to address with the build. On top of that you didn’t incorporate Zeal into the build you posted.

Updated to deal with the newest patch.
Few changes to most of the builds as a result.
Although I do not play much anymore I will continue to update this build as long as I feel my skills are at a high level of play.

ANet trolls its player base again!
Did you guys expect anything different?
Alright, I’m done fighting these people. I talked to Xom ingame and got my answer. These builds work if you give them a try, if you need help learning them or have questions about them, talk to me ingame or PM.
That’s all I have left to say here.
I want to let everyone know for a the longest time I thought this fellow was a epic level troll pulling one over on all of us. Well he did send me in game, I can confirm 100% he firmly believes what he posts and much more with no middle ground.
So he is not a troll after all, kind of a shocker for me, he is trying to help.
@MightyAltroll take a few weeks and get to the leader boards its not hard even a terrible necro running a bad spec that does not even know the class like me did it without actually trying to do it. You might gain some perspective and I think it would serve you well in your effort to help the necro community.
Don’t worry he’s not a troll, just schizophrenic.
Reminds me of somebody from GW1…. http://buildwars.forumotion.com/
Best thread NA
This has obviously degraded into an kitten measuring contest.
The builds posted may very well be good for people to use a springboard, but trying to paint them as “meta” strikes me as false advertising. Sure, they may very well be effective. I won’t contest that. However, efficacy is not the measure of whether or not something is the current meta. The current meta is the effective build the fits within the overall team structure. If a 30-30-10 is the best way for a necro to fulfill it’s given role withing a team, then it is the meta. It may not be the best 1v1 build out there. It may not be the best hot join hero out there. However, neither of those matters. What matters is what the top teams are using a necro for. That’s the meta.
I appreciate your effort in collecting effective builds for players to use, tweak, or experience, but maybe present them a bit differently in the future to avoid threads like this.
My point of posting this was to clean ignorance from any top players, to show what Necro is capable of. Spazzcromancer never allowed me to post his amazing Bunker build, but all of these builds are good for a number of things, from roaming, to tanking, to bursting, to bunkering, to supporting, to controlling. Unfortunately, I have to post gameplay videos, and apparently teach them how to use the kitten ed class before they learn that Necro can do more than spam DoTs.
Question: you’re trying to actually teach the top players that they’re the one playing incorrectly? I don’t mean this to sound blunt, but what are your qualifications that will make a top player take your word over their own experiences?
If they think Necro cannot burst or bunker effectively, but I have done it before, and I know people that bunker/burst effectively. Then they must be wrong, no?
You didn’t answer my question. What exactly are your qualifications? Are you highly ranked on the leaderboard? Have you taken down a top-rated tournament team in competitive play? Do you have an in with Jonathan Sharp? Do you have a widely popular stream? I honestly don’t know anything about you, which is why I’m asking.
I fight highly competitive players often, I discuss builds with them, I learned how to play from competitive players of every class. I have defeated competitive teams, and I know what they are capable of. I have been in competition on numerous games ranging from fighters to FPS games. I learned how to play the game, and I learned it well. I don’t see how a stream, ranking on the leaderboards, or an ‘in’ with Jon matters for qualifications, as far as I’m concerned, that means you’re simply a popular bad player.
Well it’s extremely easy to get on the leaderboards, I’ve been soloqing and I’m still in top 500 when I get really bad players on my team. So when people say you’re not on the leaderboards, and you don’t have any credit to your name, it’s because leaderboards aren’t hard to get on and if you were decent you can just carry bad players.
It looks like everything you say is either bs or a copy paste from what somebody’s told you. Over the last few days I’ve read a lot of your comments and they all lack depth of knowledge in this game, you don’t really seem to be able to comprehend how classes/builds interact with one another in theory and in practice.
You really should stop while you’re wayyyyyy behind.
I love this build, extremely strong in spvp. Having two of these Mesmers will only increase the strength of the build, there isn’t overlap.
Would like to see a lot more of these in tpvp, coupled with a shatter in a dual Mesmer comp would be incredibly strong. Definitely would make a huge difference in the opening fights.
So the time has come where I’ve decided to leave serious pvp in this game and severely reduce my playing time. I know a lot of people have been asking about my guides and the updates after the patch but unfortunately I will not continue to be a part of the pvp community.
Just so people know:
- This isn’t a “Got knocked off Clock Tower too many times, hate this game” or “Energy Sigils don’t work half the time, Treb doesn’t sound sometimes, hate this game” or anything of that sort. I’m not raging.
- I no longer have time due to a recent promotion and my last year of uni will be starting soon.
- I will not continue streaming regularly.
- I will not be playing pvp or even pve regularly.
- If I’m on you can message me and play some casual pvx.
- I will continue coaching for the reduced price of 5g/session for a team or free for individual players.
The biggest thing that hit me a few days ago was that this is a game, I should be playing to have fun and I just really haven’t been having fun recently. Defeats the purpose of playing entirely.
I posted this here because I feel closest to the Guardian community =)
Thank you for all your support and feel free to still ask questions etc, I will ALWAYS respond.
PS. For those of you who still want to donate to me, even though my policy is no donations and I still get them, you can still donate if you really want to because I’m going to casually get a legendary.
You three (Arganthium, Jax and TheMightyAltroll) just helped provide useless biased comments that the player pelicankilla wasn’t required to know. I commend Arganthium and TheMightyAltroll for at least trying to get back onto point. Practically /facepalm at Jax’s attempt to continue to troll within this thread without any proper advice at all. I would say for everyone to not let this fall into a troll thread, but clearly the name of the thread is starting to warrant the wrong attention.
Four points of advice can be given to pelicankilla. The first is to post a new thread which actually took a serious approach to his question within a clear format. The second is to research the classes either by youtube or by any other means you like. Judge the play style which best suits you and go with it. The third is to create a character for every class and become a better player while doing so. This option would be lengthy for you but would be worth it in the end. The fourth option is to not just seek aid from one “teacher” but from multiples over time. Obviously gaging whether they are trust worthy and to disregarded any opinions they may have about the various classes that are clearly biased.
Responding to stupid statements such as “Guardians are less effective than Engineers.” and now yours. Not trolling.
Since you failed to read this line which was intended for the creator of the thread “disregarded any opinions they may have about the various classes that are clearly biased”.
Actually no, when somebody says something completely false in a thread where a new player is asking for help I will refute it. The only reason I post on these forums or PvX in GW1, GWW or Guru is to make sure new players do not fall into the trap of listening to players who have no idea what they’re talking about but try and teach people ‘facts’ which are just not true.
I have no need to troll here, the only reason I got into guide making was because I remember what it was like to be relatively clueless about what to run in GW1. Infact, if he had been asking about Guardian advice I’d be giving him tips/builds/whatever he needed.
But when I can’t offer specific advice to this player I have to also make sure other people don’t give him bad advice. You’ll need to redefine your definition of troll to somehow include me in that category.

It’s not an point of view, or an opinion. It’s fact. Thieves hold significantly less value in PvP than most classes. Their capabilities are much narrower. I think most people would agree with me on that.
No actually it’s your opinion. Just because you’re not good at thief does not make the class bad, they can put a lot of pressure on a backpoint for the entire game.
Although yes they don’t fill as many roles as some other classes, that does not mean that they’re inferior in the role they play. You also forgot to address the rest of what you said.
That’s absolutely hilarious, and a wonderful attitude. “Your opinion differs from mine, therefore you must be bad”
Tell me, give me an exact LIST of things that a Thief can bring to a tournament better than any other class.
Actually it’s “You are wrong and your opinion is irrelevant”.
You didn’t read what I wrote and should re-read what I said before replying.
Scepter is getting buffed next patch.
That we dont know.
Anet was pretty clear with thakittens going to be fixed since its bugged, the orb moves slower than planned, but they were also equally clear that they couldn’t promise us when.
But the patch notes were already confirmed, so we do know.
I keep hearing this, but every time a source is asked for, the “proof” amounts to “because they have not denied it so it must be true!”
There is proof, you’ll just have to wait until the day unfortunately!

Just quickly to respond to some people in this thread.
- A burst guardian with 0303055 is a hard counter to a DPS guard with 00303010 or 0530305.
- The Guardian Bunker currently runs 00103030, which does not have 30 in Valor and, of course, does not suffer because of it.
- You can’t spec into Radiance and play DPS because you don’t have sustain and will die, that’s why Honour and Valor keep you alive with tons of heals while still doing a crap load of damage.
- It’s almost impossible to play pvp with points in zeal, REGARDLESS OF WHAT BUILD YOU RUN, due to not being able to spec into Honour and Virtues 5 (which is the crux of all guardian builds). This exception are bunkers sacrificing 10 points from virtues or valor to get spirit weapon traits.
Thieves are not effective in PvP. Guardians are less effective than Engineers.
Extremely subjective, and misguided, point of view. Exactly like the person you responded to, both comments have no weight with regards to class effectiveness.
I love your Elementalist impression (9:34)
Why thank you!
@Jax/Silven:
You always show how you can do a lot of burst, but these builds have to be super squishy. What do you do if your burst fails or is on cooldown and how do you survive or escape?
The 5 points into Valor gives me permanent vigor, so knowing what abilities to dodge roll usually means I live while a lot of other people would die in the same situation. Of course you have less survivability than DPS and Bunker builds which are designed to have a lot of sustain. But the vigor/blocks/blind/teleports should keep you alive the entire game.
I’m posting this here because I’m newly registered and not able to send private messages.
Two quick questions for you Silven:
1) If you were to take your sword/torch scepter/focus burst build out into WvW which armor, rune, and trinket types would you use? Also which type of weapon? (knights, carrion etc.)2) If at all possible could you write out the burst rotation with the sword/torch scepter/focus burst build.
Thanks.
There ya go
Well I was testing in tPvP and it doesn’t work at all. Unless ‘effective radius’ means literally ontop of your character.
It doesn’t AoE stunbreak.
Problem with auto-attacking is confusion/retal, which could cause you to burn a couple cool downs if you aren’t careful.
Although it’s always worth it for the vigor (unless you have 3+ confusion stacks or would die from it).
Except unlike every other time I’ve had a problem, this time I can’t log into that either.
Were you replying to Inculpatus Cedo?
He was suggesting emailing them directly – not logging into the support site (and just to make sure, you know that the support account is separate from the game account, right?) since you had already said you are unable to.
I realize that now. Fortunately it is now working ^^
It seemed that just everything I tried to log into on this computer did not work (except for forums).
It seems to be fixed now, I can access the game and support.
=)
Except unlike every other time I’ve had a problem, this time I can’t log into that either.
Why do we even have salvage kits?
Let us pay 7 glory to salvage each item without a ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO SALVAGE THIS ITEM YOU’VE GOTTEN 100 TIMES message. Better yet, a salvage all button that doesn’t hit the invis bags.
The invis bags you don’t get from pvp? k
I was playing, half way through I got kicked off the game with a message a long the lines of “unable to connect to login server”, I keep getting the message. It tells me to contact support but I can’t log into that to contact support either.
What do I do to fix this?
My alt account has the exact same issue.
Yeah Casters!
Totally could cast if I wasn’t such a kitten.
This isn’t League of Legends.
Of course it’s not, it’s just an Idea to force a little bit of diversity in maybe some Fun Tournaments or as an alternative Game-Mode for Custom Arenas.
I mean, there are Tournaments with a Team of 5 of 1 Class only, which just goes like 10 steps too far in terms of forcing Teams to play sth. different, but this Game-Mode combines strategic Aspects of a Banning-Pick Mode with the excitement of constantly being able to see new Builds and what Top-Teams can come up with on the Spot. It forces them to prepare new builds and strategies and Experiment.
Really, we’ll never see 80% of the Players in Top-Teams running anything else but their Favourite Builds in the forseeable future, so why not by pure evil and simply force them to? ^^’
I’m saying more along the lines of it won’t work. For example nothing is like a Guardian, if I got pushed to another class I’m going to be at a big disadvantage. In LoL people can play a lot of characters very similar to their best one.
that moment when you fall off the chair cause both legs are numbbbbbbed.
don’t forget to consume H2O either! though that then introduces the need for taking bathroom breaks.
This is getting too complicated, I can’t fit all these things in my head!
You have to be careful, the rank 1 could be a rank 200 in WvW which makes him comparable to people on leaderboard.
So that makes him REALLY good at zerging?
This isn’t League of Legends.
THIS IS A NEW BUG
Just so people know, it’s happened since the last patch.
Sometimes Energy doesn’t proc even if you have energy sigil as the only sigil on your weapon set.
Good bye dodge queue! Hello Energy bug!I do know Geomancy has always shared a CD with every other crit proc sigils, and it has been like that since launch. Originally the other two (energy and battle) both had the same but one patch it just started to work on proccing still with crit sigils but geomancy did not.
The crit proc before the weapon swap will cause the swap sigil to go on CD from the other weapon set. Its not something like a 10s cooldown but attaches the same CD as the ability that it proc’d (ie kitten w/ the quickness sigil). so the ability that actually will stop the energy from proc’n is a crit proc from the weapon you just swapped from. Not what it is paired with. If you get the swap off then your crit proc will have a 10s cooldown.
Personally I don’t think that energy sigils should exist at there is already endurance regen naturally, traits for it, and vigor. When you place even more things such as knockbacks/stuns, invulns, evades, blocks, distortions, teleports… it gets a bit ridiculous that they even exist. (no to mention traits that heal you on dodge roll, grant protection, etc etc)
I know how sigils work, I really don’t have to argue anything.
Energy sigils are bugged, not sure of the cause yet.
I agree they’re bad and so is anything to with dodge rolls, but unfortunately Guardian would be 100% ruined without it (all builds). This game needs a redesign.
THIS IS A NEW BUG
Just so people know, it’s happened since the last patch.
Sometimes Energy doesn’t proc even if you have energy sigil as the only sigil on your weapon set.
Good bye dodge queue! Hello Energy bug!
I feel it’s the worst thing on GW2 I’ve ever played.
It’s extremely easy and not enjoyable, they completely ruined it from GW1.
Going to post this in the Guardian forum too because, of course, you guys will know the most about it!
This video is a helpful guide for casters so there’s less stumbling in their casts, let me know what you think!
I know I left a lot out because I never use a script, I may have to redo it XD
I just streamed the video I made because there was no way to upload it normally >>
I have a burst guide coming out very soon, I don’t wish to stream that one if at all possible XD
So I decided to make a quick video which explains simple methods of identifying what build a Guardian is using and what they will be trying to do throughout the game.
Because I never use notes I did leave out a lot of things that I should have said. Ya I’m stupid I know
Hopefully this can help you with casting better and if you already know it all; that’s awesome.
Also feel free to give criticism or tips in how I can improve this type of video so I can either redo it or do a more advanced guide.
Thanks
Nah I found out today that my ISP’s totally kittened up my internet and it is being fixed tomorrow. This is why I’ve been having severe lag on my streams, to the point where I can’t dodge banish or Treb shots.
It’s extremely frustrating and hopefully I will have an update by tomorrow.
And the video I was uploading stopped 1/4 of the way through while I was sleeping and I have no clue why, so unfortunately you’ll have to wait.
And yes the mace is crazy awesome
Sigh it has around 20hrs left on its upload.
Silly ISP =(
Special new guide coming tonight
Or tomorrow for some of you, also new update coming soon.
tahdah s/d set now sucks again because there are no other weapon skills worth using tahdah thief is even worse in teamfights with the nerf on clusterbombs tahdah
tahdah let’s sweep the problem under the carpet then?
You’re right, your solution is better if we take into account ANet’s mindset.
You made a thread about a suggestion to “fix” thieves, i disagreed about said suggestion and presented you with the reason why i did. whats wrong with my mindset? maybe the problem is your mindset, not mine. and how can you read “sweep it under the carpet” in what i said?
That we just ignored the problem because we didn’t want to think about the solution.
The real way to fix thieves would actually be to make all their weapon skills worth using.
The thing is that doesn’t work, if they need damage on a target they’re still going to continue to spam the skill which does the most damage, or whatever scenario you can think of, regardless of the level of play.
If we don’t do anything, nothing will change. The current system is bad and has to change, if thief skills do get a buff that’s fine but spamming skills is stupid and shouldn’t exist in this game.

You’re right, your solution is better if we take into account ANet’s mindset.
I just came up with a suggestion that would deal with thieves spamming skills. Don’t get me wrong, thieves aren’t overpowered but their ability to spam skills due to the lack of recharge is a very bad design flaw. So here’s my solution to force thieves into using all their skills and not spamming a few of them over and over.
Make it so that if a thief uses the same skill more than once in a 5second (maybe slightly longer) period it costs an additional initiative and then another for each one after that.
Make it stack up to 2 or 3 times and now we have thieves unable to spam non-auto attack skills.
tahdah fixed
That’s 10 minutes of your life you’re never gonna get back!
They can definitely be killing machines
Since you don’t have to level up you can just create an asura too if you think it gives you so much advantage…just complete the first pve mission and you’re done, here you are your op asura ready to go…
No, this is the worst solution. It is like saying “Everyone use drugs in sports except. You should start use them too.” With that mentality you ruin games. It is like saying “game is unbalanced so everyone should take the strongest class”. Do you want to see something like this? I hope not.
Doesn’t make any difference to me…asura are the same as other chars no problem with that, still have human guardian and thief and i feel no difference with asura ones…hitbox is still the same so nothing changes..
You clearly don’t play bunker Guard much if you think Banish being entire covered by other players, due to their race, is fair.
Why do you think almost all bunkers play as Asura?More than 1k matches with bunker guardian…using both human and asura (2 different specs) and it’s the same…can’t see any advantage from being smaller or bigger, decent players don’t care bout your size…bad ones can’t do kitten no matter if you’re small or big…so not a big deal at the end of the day..
Every match I play against an Asura Bunker I get knocked off the point around 2 times PURELY due to the animation being covered BECAUSE they are an Asura. These two times would not have occurred if they were not an Asura player.
I was thinking that maybe it doesn’t affect you as much because you are an American player and get ~200 ping less than me, but for me if the animation is covered for a split second it hits, no exceptions.
If I had the option to change them into a human then I would not have this MASSIVE DISADVANTAGE. It is a massive disadvantage, no matter what you say, choosing a different race shouldn’t mean a point decap.
I agree to an extent the difference isn’t too much if you’re just 1 on 1, sometimes I miss it because the animation is smaller and there’s a slight advantage. It really isn’t too much for me to care, but soon as other players join in and I can’t see their animation at all then I become extremely frustrated.
The only reason you can’t have had this happen to you is if you don’t pay attention or you’ve resorted to burning stabs or dodges when you can’t see the enemy.
