I already said why. Because this is so clearly a social issue, not a technological one. Empathy and understanding do not arise from forcing others to open their squads who don’t want to for whatever reason. My offer to help the OP raise funds for a server transfer arises from empathy and understanding. Sorry you are unable to comprehend what you are trying to preach.

This is akin to saying if you don’t like people in your country treating you poorly, you should just move to another one, and “trust us” its much better over there. That seems more like troll to me.

I’m just really surprised so many people come out of the woodwork to commend this type of behavior, on an issue of discrimination towards handicapped people, which overall is baffling and frankly gross, and yet at the same time, completely proves, showcases and justifies the OP point.

To exclude disabled people is a direct violation of many rules. To exclude people because you don’t like them is bullying, plain and simple and to no net effect – you wont like them whether they are in squad or not, and they are on the map playing whether you like it or not. To exclude them from the benefits of the squad and hurt the squad and server and players (including players who object to this behavior who drop out of squad voluntarily) is hurting the game.

Why do people support this behavior? No one is asking you to play a certain way. You can play however you like. You can run a full or closed guild squad if you like and you can make exclusionary actions then. But this is not that scenario.

Look. There is no rule that says we can’t kick you out of squad because of a disability. We can exclude anyone we want, for any reason. As long as we don’t tease you in game for whatever ailment you have, I don’t see any problems.

We don’t support bullying people, but we support the right to add and remove people as we see fit. Commanders who lead WvW know what’s best for their groups, so excluding someone can be beneficial to the server.

ha, even cooler to see Maguuma capture Pangloss camp then go on the hill next to the camp and glide into Ogrewatch (which they don’t own), and capture it without having to set up a single piece of siege. Just glide into the tower from the hill beside it and before the ‘out of bounds’ can bring them out of the sky they are inside the tower. Gotta love it!

My other question is should I avoid this mode if there isn’t a comm/squad around? As quite a few times the maps I’ve been in have seemed really empty, with no comm or group around. And those are the times I’ve not really known what I’m meant to be doing/got bored, as aside from being able to take out some sentries or capture a ruin, there doesn’t appear to be much else to do when the map seems empty.

Once you get map aware you can solo towers, and duo keeps. My best is three taking Stonemist Castle.

My best memory of WvW is getting creamed by a 40 night blob and my teammates getting back up and five of them heading back to SM for revenge.

I yell out on map, what? Are you crazy? There’s six of us and 40 of them.

The buggers flipped it lol.

Never worried about dying again after that.

Find a build that suits your playstyle. Everyone plays differently, what works for someone else may not work for you.

Don’t stress over dying. In fact it’s often the only way to get better. Get back up and try again. Also: once you get over a fear of dying, be fearless, dive in face first, you’ll play better.

If it’s prime time and busy, don’t wait for someone to rezz you. Respawn and run back as fast as you can.

Learn the map. If you see an enemy yell out three things: where they are and in what direction they’re headed; how many of them; and if it’s an organized guild or just a mass of players.

Check out if your server has community events. Many will have fun nights like drunk raids, offer lessons on how to survive in a blob, or even give defense clinics. These are your teammates who will come to rely on you. Get to know them.

Lastly, roam. Learn how to survive outside the blob and become invaluable to your server.

Last thing I’ll say on this: I was always a roamer because I preferred scouting to blobbing.

One day, a thief from BULL downed me on water camp to Hills bridge, then backed off and let me revive to try again. This went on for 20 minutes, he was obviously a superior player, but he was encouraging me to learn. We became good friends after that and would often meet up at the windmill to work on skills.

I then went and found every GvG guild leader I could find and asked them for duels to practise. Eventually I learned my class, but it was only because my opponent was gracious enough to help me learn.

This is a fundamental core of roamers.

I was downed a hundred times, but eventually I got better.

Then no one would duel me

Being able to handle any kind of attack augments your skills to roam and scout. But you need humility first. And if you’re being ganked, get back up and find the guy and learn from your mistakes.

It’s part of the reason when I do blob, I’m usually among the last standing.

Bullying is only as powerful as you let it be. Turn around and stake them and you empower yourself. You can’t be bullied if you don’t let it affect you.

Why do you think I use a girly goofy name for my characters? They expect an easy kill and are surprised when I’m not. (Mind you now I am, I’m horribly rusty, but in the olden days, lol).

You guys can put whatever label or justification you want on it, but chasing down players that don’t want a 1v1 because they aren’t speced for it and u get no reward for it seems like bullying to me. It barely helps out your server and then the rest of the time I see roamers standing around in an open field waiting for people to come along. Seems like they want pvp where they stand little chance of losing.

Also saying that everyone has access to the same builds, while true the difference between a 1v1 build (which might it add uses stats and skills that were deemed op and were balanced out of spvp for that exact reason, or were balanced out because the goal is to hold an objective and not reset a fight a million times at your leisure) vs someone speced for zerg vs zerg, is like someone going up against a hand cannon with a knife.

Roamers are simply seeking unfair matchups and little else.

How about instead of being a victim, you practice and hone your skills so you can give as good as you get. There’s pride in knowing your class so well that you can handle anything you encounter, and it makes you an invaluable member of your team.

Every person in WvW has done 1,000 faceplants. Learn from them.

Red is typically for the lowest ranked server. I have no problem with them getting this tiny defense bonus, if it does indeed work that way and you don’t hit the territory border and fall down.

In fact I’d get great joy from watching someone hit the invisible territory wall and splat I certainly hope it works this way if the two territories have different owners.

Also, would really love an answer to the limits of the sections — if you glide towards another section and you don’t own it, do you fall to the ground when you reach the border? Or do you keep going and land naturally wherever? (Keeping going may be problematic).

Maybe if you guys stopped leaving your dirty underwear lying around, the yak wouldn’t be so trepidacious about entering your “fort.”

My understanding is that if you don’t own the structure, you can’t glide in that area. Or am I reading that wrong?

Other question: if team A owns say Lang, and team B owns their keep, can one glide into the other structure? Or do you hit the territory “wall” and drop once you reach it?

I’m not sure the OP has a right to comment. He’s established in the past months that rewards are the only motivator, and that he was predominantly a pve player prior to WvW introducing rewards.

I’m sorry if just a month in that you’re bored. Perhaps you’d be happier back in pve.

He and other newcomers absolutely have a right to comment. After all, it’s not your game mode, it’s everyone’s, you may play it more but everyone’s allowed to play it.

Everyone plays for rewards. Everyone. For some people simply playing the game mode is rewarding enough (some enjoy the sense of being part of something bigger, some want the large scale fights, or roaming and causing problems for their opponents). For others they only want the dangling carrot, the end goal, “material” reward. Most people fall in the middle.

It is true everyone play for a reward. But there is a huge difference when the reward is the game itself vs the dangling carrot and nothing else in a community driven game mode. The impact these motivations have on the game is profound for all involved.

Actually, you’re trying to spin it in your favor… Just because some worlds had decent population, doesn’t mean all of them did… Same held true for NA too. Fewer worlds needed linking doesn’t equal none of the worlds needed linking. Let that churn in your mind some.

And you aren’t realizing/recognizing that NA and EU are two very different entities. Even the quote you cited backs that up.

I don’t need a dev quote to back up what I’ve seen first-hand. Linking was bad for EU.

Going forward I would suggest Anet plans based on these differences.

Revert EU, and implement fixes meant for NA to NA only. They’re both current.ly stationed on separate server systems. It shouldn’t be hard. And those who prefer server-style WvW can help build the EU community, and leave the other stuff to those who want it.

I found the comment that EU was in a good state before linking very amusing.

EU has always been beset with bandwaggoning guilds who would think they are the best thing since sliced bread, ask people to leave maps so they can get their raid going, leave a sour taste in ‘pugs’ (ie, the original wvw players on that server), dissaude people from playing, and then a few months later they’d be off ‘looking for the fights’ by joining an even more stacked server.

Rinse, repeat for several years and EU maps were ghost towns before linking outside of prime, mis matched populations and mis matched coverage leading to match blow outs and declining populations.

Out of my friends list of wvw players from the early days, I’m the last man standing..and I’m not really playing now either since this latest sticking plaster disaster.

Let’s face it, the mode is stale. It needs a rework, but Anet aren’t willing to invest even a faction of the money they wasted on their failed e-sports ( I told them it would fail..), and so we’re seeing the decline in numbers again.

Server pride has gone. Maybe it’s time to rework the mode completely.

One change they could bring out is making scoring more interesting. Killing higher ranks could give more points, for instance. Or killing people who have clocked up more kills without dying. You could even have it so that when someone reaches a threshold they are highlighted on the map.

Events within wvw would be easy to do, if they had anyone willing to take the time to do them.

Maybe it’s time to kill off servers, and make it guild based instead, with guilds allowed 500 players and tactical timed matches between squads of various sizes on various maps and a ranking and handicap system. Five teams on a map.

Maybe even have a couple ‘free for all’ maps where you can join with a squad of five maximum and be randomly assigned a colour for that fight, one hour duration, rewards based on various criteria.

So many different ways of doing it, but it would mean a complete relaunch of wvw with a marketing budget too- so enough dreaming, I’m off to bed.

We must have been playing a very different game because I didn’t see the mass pug server hopping migration happen really until after linking started. To the point now it’s almost a joke.

EU never claimed to be 24/7, never wanted to be really. It was fine with the prime time rush and then a scrappy crew of maybe 10 during off hours.

Couple that with constantly changing matches, we had it good.

So long as there is no barrier of entry or criteria to join a server you cannot create a competitive environment in WvW. People will flock to winning servers, and leave losing servers. It has happened since the start of the game.

Trying to tie competition to server identity is structurally impossible, unless you want to fundamentally redesign WvW.

Personally I believe that the majority of WvW players have more loyalty to their guilds than their servers, so I would encourage Anet to look at redesigning WvW around the concept of guilds rather than servers. You could create something more dynamic, player-determined, and competitive. But it would have to be a fundamental redesign, none of this incremental bit by bit stuff we’ve been getting.

I’ve asked a number of times if people could give a percentage of guilds vs pugs, and nobody can answer. My observations is there’s far more pugs than organized guilds, so it would follow that their loyalty would be to their server if unguilded. At the very least, it would not be to a guild they’re not a part of, and making people join guilds to play is not practical. And if there’s more pugs than guilds, catering to guilds would be a huge mistake. So sure the majority of players in guilds are loyal to their guilds, but if the majority of the entire population isn’t in a guild, well …..

Catering to anything that is exclusive vs inclusive is just a poor business model.

I don’t know what your server did, but my server was pretty open to newbies (well we had some idiots who were ranting all the time).

Some players are now part of our gamemode and our community which is a nice sideeffect. Unfortunatley they lost me, because after all those years i really have to say: this mode is dead to me, sometimes i log in and try to support a commander i like and sometimes i lead, but compared to 1 – 2 years ago iam pretty much finished with the game. ANet killed to much fun.

My thoughts are if you enter WvW with the “what’s in it for me” attitude, that will kill the game mode faster than anything else. The beauty of WvW is the cooperation, and being part of something bigger than self.

If you take the time to invest in your server community you will find that a lot of servers do stuff like this themselves. Player-generated events, which enhances both your gameplay and sense of community.

My server, for example, had a once a month class theme blob — all rangers, all mesmers, all necros with pets (necro raid we stole blatantly from Maguuma and was hilarious).

Every Saturday they host “drunk raids,” it’s also entertaining. And for funzies. And not serious.

Other servers host newbie defense and how to fight effectively in a zerg clinics.

All done by volunteers from the community that care deeply about this game mode and enrich your gameplay far more than any reward could do.
