if we’re really honest… tempest just doesn’t work. number tweaking won’t really do the job. added functionality can make stuff better but doesn’t solve the greater problem.

what tempest needs is a complete redesign. not in its theme, the stormy scary tempest that blows kittens up and is a crazy cc bot, but in its execution. drop the support on it… make it a strong cc elite spec than can either be tanky or deal a big deal of damage.

shave it off cantrip mastery and not from the crits.

the ele’s trait is is a major one compared to other classes’ vigour on crit traits which are minors, so “bringing it in line” doesn’t really work out here.

i can understand that the devs may think ele has too much vigour but taking it away from arcana will hurt dps builds more than it will hurt celestial builds, so i suggest to nerf the vigour on cantrips from 6s to 4s or 3s and not on crits.

No they didn’t, cleansing had to be nerfed on ele not burning. Burning had to be a global nerf.

And Frost bow should just have been made an elite skill since all our elites are kitten.

you’re wrong. all those changes are perfect and fair. the might on cantrips could have been left at 1 per cantrip but oh well, people will just switch the grandmaster for extra might.

it will hurt dps eles more than d/d but if you pick vamp runes + elem contingency instead of the arcane shield at 25% you will still get vigour from being hit in water so it’s 8s/10s uptime.

that’s not the point, the problem is that it’s a bug that weaponswap doesn’t end an attack. it does on every other skill.

no gaze doesn’t deal damage afaik, but i could be wrong.

problem with tempest on d/d is, overloads mess up the rotations. what i suggest would be removing the attunement cooldown penalty on use but keeping the overload cooldown the same.

if you want to go tempest with d/d you originally dropped fire because the overload did provide some okayish burning, but then they nerfed it

that’s what it’s gonna be. now with druid it kinda depends on how it will work.. but apparently druids will have aspects instead of pets which makes the whole thing a bit more reliable. staff looks like a lot of cc for peel and most likely also a bit of heal. the only question is how it will turn out. oh and let’s not forget the scrapper, the so called close combat brawler.

tbh after more than 1 year and close to 3000 games on d/d ele i’m getting sick of it. people are frustrated to play against d/d eles and i’m sick of seeing so many d/d eles that can do well without having to master the class 100% just because they get carried by passives, bugs and burns.

for me they could delete d/d ele from the game if they finally make other builds viable. neither burst nor condi builds have ever been viable in the history of gw2, it has always been that tanky thing. in a perfect world ele would be hard to play and rewarding if you’re able to do it. in reality you can do whatever you want and still achieve above average results. but hey, #believeinkarl because tempest is gonna open up new playstyles, right?

You talk like other professions are not carried by passive/bugs etc etc . Nobody would play a profession that requires 100x more effort to compete with the rest of the passive OP crap on other profession. If you want to be the special black snowflake that badly…go and play trap ranger in tournaments, if you really want to be that l33t..go on and play it…nobody will stop you..well maybe you won’t find a team willingly to get you on board but who care..you’re l33t.

You want a viable burst spec on the class with the lowest HP, no stealth, no evade spam, no stances or meditations type of skills…kk what do you suggest?

Really want to know what so “skilled” about stealth burst, double endure pain rampagers, double elixir S/gear shield soldier pro, DS soldiers and so on

Really pls tell me about the years of training required to play any of the specs mentioned above

i do play tripple trap ranger sometimes when i feel like it. it’s a high risk/high reward spec. obviously it’s not viable because it needs babysitting, is a one-trick pony and can totally be negated by cleanse support from ele/war/guard.

Arcane/Water and the current Meta

not all builds have to run with water and arcane.

at least on fresh air ( yes i know that’s not really something to be considered) it is possible to run other stuff.

when the specialisation update hit i tested a couple of combinations

air water arcane for example but in the end earth air arcane has proven to be the best. not only do you get enough condi cleanses on short cooldowns but you also don’t need water anymore for the hitpoints. the survivability in earth is even better despite people always thinking water is a must have. overall the build is obviously in a dire state because of powercreep and clunkyness of our skills but it shows that non water arcane can work.

more or less what i’ve been running. people laughed at me for taking earth in fresh air. i’m just not a big fan of signet of earth if it’s vs thief or mesmer as it’s basically useless in that matchup. arcane wave does a way better job in those matchups.

Problem is that your opinion clearly uninformed since you’ve obviously never played the build I posted.

i did, not with the same traits setup but with the same lines. it’s impossible to hold a node against a competent shoutbow or a rifle engi so why would i bother playing it when those are my main threats. scepter is also a lot weaker against stealth targets, that’s another downside of it.

Did you even read what I posted: It’s not a node-holder nor a 1v1-build. It’s a teamfight build with strong roaming-potential and some node-holding potential (better than non 1v1/bunker-builds, weaker than dedicated bunkers/1v1).

Or do you expect to hold a node against a Shoutbow or Engi with a thief or mesmer?

The build is best when it is in teamfights. Does your team run a 3-point strat with strong 1v1-builds and roamers? Well then this build won’t work as well and you shouldn’t play it.

Does your team play a 2-point strat with strong teamfight and the goal to dominate the points in head-on fights? (for example with bunker-guards, rampage-warriors, Elexir-Engis like chaith’s etc.) then this is where the build works very well.

It’s not supposed to be a replacement of a D/D-Ele at all, since they have very different roles. I don’t think I can make it any clearer than that.

did you not read what i wrote? there are better teamfighters or +1 builds than s/d ele.

meta is what’s best, not what could work. if it’s about winning then you need to run the best stuff.

1. why would anybody take s/d celes if it’s weaker than d/d…

2. dagger has way better mitigation in teamfights/1v1s compared to scepter

3. who needs phoenix if you have drake’s breath. dragon tooth is bad anyway.

4. fresh air is hands down the worst dps build in the game right now. if i play it it makes me wanna punch my screen and delete my meteorlogicus. you essentially go full damage with 3 arcanes to deal an acceptable amount of damage or you will deal less damage than a celestial build.

5. scepter skills are terrible. the auto attacks are slow, clunky and the damage is extremely low for a weapon that basically has 1 bugged “high” hitting skill shot that you could call burst if you wanted to. the utility it gives you.. oh no wait, the utility actually comes from focus, nvm. scepter without fresh air is unplayable.

nobody cares how well s/d with celestial or even s/f fresh air does against low mmr random players, the party’s at the top and that’s where it’s too weak.

1) It’s weaker in 1v1’s, but not by much. Not every build needs to be a 1v1 build. It’s much stronger in teamfights and as a +1.

2) D/D isn’t even top-5 in Teamfights in the current meta, for several reasons:
- Melee only, which means it’s harder to reach certain targets, you eat more AoE, get CC’d more often etc.
- The DPS is not very bursty and much of the DMG is fairly easily cleansed. Most teamfights get decided by quick burst and strong openings.
- Crucial Skills are extremely easy to interrupt, like Fire 2 and Water 2.
-> Teamfights are clearly where D/D is the worst, thats why he’s used as a 1v1 roamer. For the S/D, teamfights are his strength, so they are two different builds with different roles.

3) Phoenix might be one of the best skills in the game and dragon tooth hits for insane DPS with low CD and is a blast finisher.

4) okay

5) I have 7k+ games and I frequently play in teams with very experienced players. This build is not some brainfart, it’s is actually one of the best builds in the game. Don’t believe me? try it out…

d/d ele is a bruiser, you peel for your players with hard cc and you heal allies. the roles are completely different and if you want a +1 you can simpy take something that is better than a s/d ele.

s/d is weak against ranged because you lack ring of earth and you’re more vulnerable to burst because you have no shocking aura.

while dragon tooth might be a area denial skill it is completely useless against people that walk out of it and wasting a cc for it or a utility slot / gm trait in arcana is simply not worth it.

if you like s/d then play it but in my opinion there is simply better stuff

If OP is asking for build diversity for eles.. What do thieves get?

We’ve been pigeonhold into d/p far more than the Ele being held in D/D.

not true. back when d/d ele came up which is over a year ago thieves still played s/d. even back around the time pre celestial d/d ele thieves played s/d, some of them even double s/d if anybody remembers jumper.

so over time thieves had better success and build diversity than eles.

1. s/p quickness meta
2. s/d meta + s/p before nerf
3. d/p + s/d both played
4. d/p

while for ele it was

1. s/d or d/d soldier/valk
2. s/f fresh air when they killed some traits and the heal. zoose was pretty much the only one trying to play it in na tournaments, maybe phantaram aswell but it don’t remember it that much. there were no eles in tournaments for like a year, hello ranger.
3. d/d or staff while d/d was simply better
4. d/d

thief was never out of meta while ele was for almost a year.

i won’t say that i’m happy about how they pigeonhole thief or ele into what they are and always have been but imo thief was overall more viable during the 3 years. it might be a coincidence but.. after all we share the same dev.

Absolutely not, Cele-Scepter got a huge buff with the recent big specialization-changes and quite frankly, it baffles me that we don’t see this build played more often because it’s IMHO one of the best builds in the game.

In certain 1v1’s, it’s not as good as D/D-Ele (probably in most 1v1’s), but it’s still good enough to be an off-roamer. In all other aspects, especially burst and teamfight, it’s mindblowingly good.

Why does Cele-Scepter work?

Simply because of the rewamped fire-trait-line and the ability to skill deep into it thanks to the new specializations. You get tons of mightstacks, perma fury for you and your team, more power and raw DMG on scepter and shorter CD’s on the fire-skills. The last one is especially important since a vast majority of the DPS comes from bursts with fire 2-5.

I’ve been using this build a lot lately and each time I switch back to D/D, I just feel that the Scepter build is much stronger overall.

I hit for like 7k dragon tooths and with a tooth+phoenix+rnig of fire, I easily down quishy classes in ~a second.

With the extremely low CD’s on fire, I can also prestack 30+ seconds of fury and 10+ stacks of might on the whole team before the fight.

Another big plus is the perma-weakness you put on a target thanks to easily spammable Air-1 (dmg isn’t too great, I give you that) and Arcane Precision. D/D-Eles can’t really make use of arcane precision as well as S/D, but on S/D, it’s an amazing trait.

Just because no1 plays Cele scepter, doesn’t mean it’s not good.

Besides Cele, Fresh Air is also pretty decent and IMHO even meta-worthy in some comps.

just play the game.. it doesn’t even take long to get to 80 anymore and 80 doesn’t mean anything either as most people on lvl 80 are still bad. after all rank 80 is only legacy rank 55 (with 3x the points per game than it used to be)

that’s an interesting thought. i haven’t actually paid attention to this because i was running energy on my staff so the impact wasn’t that meaningful.

i also have a faint memory of having canceled UA somehow.. i just don’t remember how. maybe it got patched during the bwe or it was simply a bug but i clearly tested it afterwards on a golem and switching weapons didn’t cancel it anymore at that point.

no, it’s unintended behaviour as you can cancel every movement skill in the game by swapping weapons. it is obviously a bug that you can switch to staff mid UA without the skill canceling.

what i noticed during the last bwe was that skills like unrelenting assault cannot be canceled, not by stowing weapon nor by switching weaponset.

this is essential when fighting other players to avoid retal damage or healing an enemy revenant to full

usually skills that move your character cannot be stowed but they can be weaponswap-canceled. as i said, this is not possible for unrelenting assault. currently you just continue your unelenting assault even if you switch weapons in between.

what i suggest is that this skill can be canceled by switching weaponsets during the channel. the whole cast should end then, including the evade frames so that it can’t be abused.

another example of such a skill is crystal hybernation: you can “surprise” enemies by canceling the skill before it ends (i think it’s only weaponswap that cancels it, not stowing) to confuse them when they originally wanted to burst you after the block ended.

Clarification on Crystal Hibernation please

The block time is 3 seconds, you are rooted, conditions can be applied to you if the attack is unblockbale (Works like any other block skill), and the healing is the same 900 per tick resulting is just under 4k base.

What about capture prevention? I immagine is still there.

today i logged on my warrior and played a match on gs/hammer because yolo. i was looking at the numbers and i asked myself, why am i even bothering with my 2k lightning bolt or 2,5k phoenix crits. i hit a thief a 8k in the face and gently sent him to heaven with another 6k.

in fact i had so much damage that i destroyed a d/d ele and a pistol engi in a 1v2 on the close point…

to make things even worse i used this not-tornado elite called rampage and killed a couple more people.

how will s/f fresh air ever be viable if even berserk war is only semi-viable..

this is a double edged sword because it’s only a block now, not an invul anymore. this means that all the unblockable skills like greater marks 5, mirror blade, phoenix, tool kit pull will go through this.

not saying that it is bad, just saying that it also has new downsides.

rebound, a 2k heal, that’s a joke if you ask me. 1 more auto attack and the person resurrected by this shout will die again.

It scales with healing though, so on a full support build it might actually be significant, and even otherwise, it’s a heal that is applied if you die, so the alternative is you just die, and if you don’t die during that period, you get more auras. Seems pretty solid to me. I think an ability like this that shoots you up to high health might be overpowered. Also keep in mind that it is across several characters, not just you.

One thing that occurs to me is that it might be really solid for a true “healer” build, since it would give you more time to pull off big heals. Pop this one as everyone gets close, and than as soon as someone dies, or looks about to die, pop your big AoE heals, Rebound keeps them from dying before it goes off, and then your other heals restore them to fighting shape.

it scales with healing power, 1.5 that’s true but 2k base heal + 750 ( from 1500 healing power) won’t make a huge differnce. i don’t expect it to heal as much as AED but at least 5k.

true healer builds are unviable in pvp because of the ridiculous amount of hp you get with a cleric amulet on a light armour class. 11600 hp vs burn guard or mesmer is suicidal, even if you cleanse the burn, you usually get at least 1 tick due to human reaction time.

those changes won’t do anything meaningful for tempest

rebound, a 2k heal, that’s a joke if you ask me. 1 more auto attack and the person resurrected by this shout will die again.

1 stack stability on overloads? better than nothing i guess. still useless in teamfights. pulsing stability for 2 stacks per second would be acceptable.

overloads still not worth using

overloads still cancel upon swapping attunement

remove the overload cooldown penalty but leave the cooldown on overloads. attunement cooldowns still at 8.5s with arcana but overload cooldowns stay at 14 or whatever they are.

the shouts are still terrible and the only reason anybody would ever take them is because of the low cooldown some of them have combined with the auras for the heal and protection, the shouts by themselves are weak and horrible.

karl, for once it would be nice if you gave us what we actually wanted.

tldr

devs don’t have enough time to master their classes
-> they don’t know how to properly balance because they don’t know what the classes need

best examples are tempest or base ranger..

the stuff that you call passive/op traits are not implemented to make players happy, they are implemented because arenanet really thinks that those traits are good.

karl is not a great ele, nor thief nor guard, but he balances them
same for robert and co

what the game needs is cooperation between the balance devs and players that know how to play their classes. anet should start working together with players that have a lot of experience on their classes. if the devs don’t have the time to master their classes then they should at least listen to players that do.

you also can’t just ask people on the forums because, let’s be real, not everybody is a good player and many posts are just troll or grief posts.

air training and bolt to the heart gone, some other traits came to “make up for it”. other classes’ dps got buffed significantly while fresh air dps remained about the same. you’re not particularly doing less damage, it’s rather that you were not allowed to jump on the power creep train.

s/f fresh air is more or less the worst dps build you can play in pvp. the damage is low and you’re a walking sheet of paper with no use for your team.

something i realized during the last beta weekend was the strength of reapers and how heralds slowly outdamage eles. now i won’t say that d/d is perfectly balanced (in regards to skill <-> reward) but if they indeed nerf them without compensating them otherwise (i would love a meta where dps ele would finally be viable) then ele will disappear from the pvp meta as a whole.

reaper pretty much counters d/d ele, i tested this with a necro friend, both 2000+ games on our respective classes. all the chill, the transfers, corrupts and direct damage a reaper can make use of will kill an ele over time.

on the other hand, i have played on herald and i have played on d/d ele against it, if you use your evades, blocks and cleanses well enough you can keep yourself from dying while you slowly outdamage a d/d ele.

Saying that ele doesn’t need considerable nerfs because you can pay $50 for something that might compete (I don’t see herald doing that at all by the way) is laughable. The whole reaper point is redundant considering celestial necro “can” already beat celestial ele (spoiler: it’s because they’re both in the same overpowered tier).

Anyways my point is that you cannot justify elementalist not needing to be heavily nerfed simply because there’s literally one other build that can beat it. I said this last meta when people tried defending celestial engie by saying condi necro countered it, or celestial warrior by saying 60206 d/p thief could 1v1 it- the existence of one or two (hard)counters is essentially a complete non sequitur when it comes to builds that can effectively steamroll everything else.

Fire magic, water magic, and arcana all need nerfs. d/d weapon skills need nerfs. d/d’s might stacking potential needs nerfs.

There is absolutely nothing slight about the quantity of nerfs d/d ele needs. the closest candidates for nerfs (cele necro, power mesmer) need slight nerfs. By comparison they need a weedwacker taken to them, cele ele needs an axe taken to it.

now that I have that out of my system onto the main post, hoelbrak is way better than vampirism for ele. even with the bug hoelbrak’s synergy with eles current might stacking nonsense and anti-condition capabilities is crazy strong. vampirism’s 4th is lost on eles anyways.

vampirism itself is fine. It’s essentially hoelbrak for those who can’t stack might, in terms of giving damage + some sustain. Anyone who thinks it’s broken needs to learn how to time attacks exactly with the end of mist form, it isn’t that hard and it’s a skill that carries over against elixir s!

seems like you don’t really know a lot about eles or about pvp. further argueing is futile so let’s just leave it at that.

now on topic:
vamp works well if you face a mes/thief combo or if you get moa’d, a bit situational.
hoelbrak is overall the better choice, also because it reduces chill and immobs, stuff that can kill or cripple you.

sorry but no smart team would ever “burst the pet” in an actual fight. the only exception would be from cleave when you’re in downed and you have the downed skill 3.

Let me put this argument to bed. Taunt needs a rework in the sense that it doesn’t go THROUGH dodges/blocks. But I would like them to keep going through EVADES. Reason? Revenants. You guys will want to have a taunt ranger on your side when revenants dominate the meta in the upcoming expansion. UA is just simply broken and pet taunt goes through it.

you do know that the effect of unrelenting assault is halfed because you have a pet right? it’s even weaker against mesmers or everything that has AI or multiple targets.

Kinda hard for me to believe someone wishes the best for ranger and at the same time is calling for some sort of nerf to taunt, all the while having a signature that states he is an ele.

yes, to your surprise and even if i main ele i wish for all classes to be viable and balanced, this also goes for ele and i have suggested multiple reasonable nerfs for that aswell. just because my main is ele doesn’t mean that i can’t like ranger.

Diamond Skin could use a rework

Heaven forbid the trait offers counterplay, right? So should Necro’s Foot in The Grave stability be incorruptible to fear? Why should Diamond Skin be different from almost every other trait? Resistance is also affected by boon duration, so it’s actually a double-edged sword.

there is something called rotation, if you go for 1v1s you rotate the best class for that matchup to that given point. condi engi vs diamond skin ele is a fairly bad matchup, so just don’t rotate that way. condi engi has also a disadvantage against necros with transfers/conditions, necro has no diamond skin and still you shouldn’t send the condi engi against it.

This analogy is misleading. Condi engi vs. necro is a bad matchup because it’s heavily favored to the Necro. The engi can win, however, by outplaying the necro and baiting transfers, for example. Condi engi vs. diamond skin ele is not a bad matchup, its an unwinnable, one-sided matchup. The condi engi has no opportunity to outplay the ele and win.

it was already suggested to make foot in the grave into a break bar. diamond skin does have counterplay, namely in the form of 1700 hitpoints.

the problem for the engi is that he will be running with rabid while condi necros and condi rangers are running carrion, those builds can indeed peel off those 10% hitpoints to condibomb an ele.

it’s hard to believe but it’s the engi’s own fault. nades per se would have enough direct damage if he wasn’t running a build with 0 power.

then again most classes will not be able to kill a staff ele in 1v1 anyway, staff ele because they are more likely to run diamond skin even if they actually don’t even need it.

now don’t get me wrong, i’m not a fan of diamond. it’s a wasted grandmaster that could be something more useful. if you pick it then it’s a situational pick, most of the time forced because you fight against multiple condi builds. 99% of the time it will not be picked and will not benefit you.

[Change Required] Shout Rewamp

tbh they should just revamp shouts in general, the effects are bad and outdated.

the only decent shouts are (because originally they weren’t even shouts..) are the heal and the elite when traited for reg + cd reduction and swiftness.

protect me is a worse, capture point preventing version of signet of stone, guard me is completely useless and usually just a troll pick to have perm regen, search and rescue should be a trait only and not a shout, sic em could easily be turned into aoe might + fury or something more interesting (i admit that it’s the best legacy shout though).

another thing is that survival skills are just better in every aspect. condi cleanse? survival skills cleanse 2 and give you fury. if you want condi cleanse from shouts you need to pick the runes for it + the trait to make them worthwile.
