the thing is, even if every class had anti-stealth abilities ppl would still cry rivers about stealth

Ragnarok had an interesting mechanic for Stealth.

Cloak turned you invisible and you moved the same movement speed and had access to all of your skills, however, you would be revealed instantly if an AOE hit you. Then the 2nd form of Stealth was “Hide”. While in “Hide” you would move 50% of your base speed, all skills aside from “Unhide” would be locked and you would be immune to all damage except “earth” magic.

Not saying elementalist should be the only one that can reveal, just giving a mechanic that worked really well. It balanced out fair easily and gave all classes equal opportunity to stop “cloak” while hide was more selective on how it was removed.

PVP Discrimination

Today I decided after a while that I wanted to resume trying to get phoenix rank. So I started to pvp a bit and queue’d for solo queue. After about 15 minutes or so the queue popped. I joined in and the first thing I see is “We have an ele -.-” I played it out and the ENTIRE match was me team kittening about having an elementalist on their team and how they should be banned from competitive play.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand it’s competitive mode and people will always be more high strung, but having them whine all match about a class choice reminded me of popping solo queue in LoL.

I don’t really expect to change the views of people or change anything, more or less just ranting a bit. It’s just a bit of a pain to be reminded of toxic communities when we used to have one of the nicer ones.

@Frowny, using Renewing Stamina on a build with 4% crit and no fury (because you don’t switch attunements) is more like a gap filler, or am I mistaken?

Like I said its early theorycraft that I throw together in 5 minutes.

Can someone explain why the Elementalist’s Vigor on Crit trait is now a 20 point master trait, but Mesmer and Guardian’s Vigor on Crit trait is a 5 point Adept trait in lines almost all builds take?

Is there some justification by ANet that I missed that lays out why the squishiest profession with the least inherent survival mechanics should also have the least access to survival oriented boons?

I see the logic in not wanting the two changes in this line to counter each other. Moving good adept traits to master level is contrary to reducing the need to spec into this line. That being said, Elemental Attunement is just a beast of a trait and could honestly be compared with most grandmaster traits. I think a good compromise would be to place Renewing Stamina back in the adept tier, placing is where the other professions get this type of trait, and instead move Final Shielding to the master tier where it could live alongside Arcane Retribution as two good choices in arcane builds that take Arcane Mastery in the adept tier.

YOU CAN’T HAVE ELEMENTAL ATTUNEMENT AND RENEWING STAMINA AT THE SAME TIME SINCE THEY WILL BOTH BE MASTER TIER TRAITS.

Except Jon peters has said in our ele patch change thread he’s willing to consider keeping Renewing Stamina in adept and changing Elemental Attunement to master.

Jon, this is insane talk. Damage immunity is incredibly powerful and hard counters many builds. It’s not good gameplay.

If you’re insisting on doing this, then be equitable and make direct damage immunity traits available at the grandmaster levels for necromancers and engineers.

See how silly that sounds?

Damage reduction is one thing, but complete immunity..? Why are you doing this?

Harley Quinn has depth, character developement, personality, strengths and flaws. Scarlet is a lazy writers wet dream. Syvlari don’t have pre-defined limits like all the other races, so having her go through ALL the colleges, excelling in everything and being the ultimate big kitten is just plain lazy. There’s no struggle for her, no flaw, no personality, and worse off she’s childish.

The whole TA bit was nothing but an annoyance listening to her schlip over “I’m the bestest and smartest ever! Look at me I caught Caithe! Caithe has a secret tee hee.” The whole bit with her saying “It’s so naughty” “It’s so eeevil” is like a brat kid holding his hand in front of your face going “I’m not touching youu”.

That said having a KIT ELITE doesn’t have to be overpowered. It all depends on how you design it, for example a Minigun/Chaingun with an "overheat’ mechanic. Instead of cooldown per se, it builds and keeps heat so it’s usable and can be swapped in and out without restriction, but it’s still not spammable.

Me personally though, I’d like to keep with engineers insane/brilliant/odd thought and playstyle.

Orbital Strike : Precision Strike -(pick your name)
Gives a drag and drop style line targetting AOE. A red laser “paints” the area beforehand, 2 second charge. A white/blue laser (or artillery explosions) smash into the target area and slowly moves towards the targeted area damaging all enemies within. Deals damage every second and applying burn. Beam takes 5 seconds to fully reach its target/dissipate.

Came here a while back from my ele and it just feels….free. I guess that seems a bit broad but “free” is the only word I can justify using. I mean christ one of our few Engi mottos is “If you can justify the points for it, it’s a viable build”.

Other than that I chose it due to being able to equip a shield.

I’ve had an engineer for about 4 months and this is a new engi build I made and have been running for about a week. It’s been doing sickeningly well and I adore it. I tried to stick with ele as it was my beta 1 class and I adored it… but there’s a bit of life advice you can apply here.

Don’t stay in an abusive relationship.

Anet keeps telling Ele they’re beautiful then slapping them once everry 2-4 weeks. Engi is a great alternative and although you feel clunky compared to ele’s smooth fluid motions, I honestly can say I don’t regret it.

Engineer Motto: If you can justify putting points in it, it’s not a waste.

Honestly Silkroad online had a system like this and it works out beautifully. You had 2 stats to invest in STR/INT. You had 3 weapon choices: Blade/Sword, Glaive/Spear, Bow. And you had 4 elements: Healing, Fire, Ice, Lightning. You could weapon swap on the fly and pick whatever armor set you wanted.

I’m not saying the grind wasn’t a pain in the kitten but with that system I felt so much freer than I ever have in character creation. Honestly, my favorite PVP game ever released…. 70cap and before. Screw euro cap

Elementalist – 9 second base attunement

We’re already the lowest in base stats. I don’t understand why they would be ignorant enough of the class they created to force it into 30 trait points to use a mechanic they created in order to keep any semblance of rotation going. Since we’re the lowest in RAW base stats, those trait points mean more to us than any other class.

Necro I can’t accurately tell you too much about aside from with dire gear, you’re going to be the biggest, tankiest, beefiest pair of training wheels you can be =P. It’s super simple and you can still be a massive help in zergs and havoc.

Not with how conditions work you can’t.

Idk, I’ve seen plague form necros holding borderland castles till people get back. It also may just be me, but I’ve never had a problem playing conditional builds in zergs.

Mesmer is the most boring, useless, monochromatic class in the game. Then you hit level 40 and you fart kitten smiles and throw up rainbows. Seriously, level 40 and after is when the class opens up. It’s such a trait dependent class and still the only one you’ll hear people say “just wait it out”. When you’re 80 it’s support potential goes through the roof. Your utility is basically unrivaled in this game for both zergs and havoc groups.

Elementalist… this was/is my first love class. Made one back and in beta 1 and I can tell you this from the bottom of my heart, I regret putting so much time into it. I got used to how fun D/D used to be as it was the fastest paced, action packed, joyride that I wanted. Then the nerfs started coming and ANET forgot to stop nerfing. The worst part is after playing D/D every other class has felt boring in comparison.

I’ll explain it as best it makes sense to me. As a mesmer, we trade out OoC mobility for IN-combat Mobility. Sure, out of combat and in PVE world exploration, we’re slow. When you’re in combat you have:
26s 1,200 range stunbreak.
Potential speed increases for each clone you have out
8 second X distance sword leap
6(?) second instant 650 range teleport away from the enemy and since it’s instant, it happens even when you’re stunned.

Runes of Air, Traveller, and Speed are all viable options as is the offhand focus. Even if you’re upset you have to specifically gear for speed, the class isn’t exactly dead due to its out of combat movement speed. Heck, even if you want to troll go ahead and make the 95% boon duration rune set, that should give you close to infinite swiftness and only cost you 5-6 gold.

Combo fields/finishers are usable by EVERYONE though, not just an Ele. This Overcast idea is meant to be something unique to the Elementalist. And while it could potentially be overpowered (would Tornado last 30 secs, or FGS have 22 base charges or something under this?) I can really see it being a unique setup, since you not only use it for raw damage, but for utility purposes as well.

That’s the basic idea I was going for, I’m glad you understand. I said it was a beta idea but that would be more refined it’s more in line with alpha testing as I haven’t thought all of the things through but yeah, it does require tempering.

I honestly have no idea what to do with tornado aside from maybe unlocking an “arcane” option when you’re spinning. FGS doesn’t need to have 22 base charges though, we could instead make it so perhaps if you use the Overcast with it instead of just summoning 2 swords we could make single autonomous one like guardian weapons, or even leap to where you cast it.

Just brainstorming though =P there’s also no rule that says it has to effect ults/utility

Something just struck me and forgive me if I’m wrong on this but, aren’t combo fields essentially the GW2 version of the overcast mechanic?

I would honestly say the XII trait in arcana is the closest thing we have to anything relating to that mechanic.

as some topics do. I’m simply trying to get “some” form of discussion going. I won’t degenerate to being disrespectful, I ask you to be the same way. I got 1 reply afterwords and gave 1 in response. Nothing after that. I’m simply interested in getting the ball rolling.

Also, I would ask you to read up before just calling it “a bland rip off”. What I gave was an example of a mechanic that would be easy to implement, but the fact is Overcasting was a Guild Wars 1 mechanic for elementalist. I simply refurbished it for the GW2 world, again, in an easily implemented way. Otherwise the closest thing would be a self induced"chilled" since we have no energy to block.

One more thing:

The Adreneline mechanic that warriors have is used to sit on for their bonus stats then execute except for certain builds. I’m suggesting a RAMPED effectiveness for 1 skill, not out entire stat tree via this mechanic.

Tbh a 9 second base recharge sounds fine. That can be lowered to 5 seconds if that doesn’t sound too OP?

9 is the 30 point arcana currently which I feel should have been the original goal. It allows you to properly rotate which is why I threw it out there : )

Elona is supposed to be a wasteland full of zombies and slaves…Thought Orr was bad ? Imagine it bigger with less corals and even more undead.

I would like to point out that’s not what Elona is supposed to be. Given Palawa Joko is evil, but considering he’s had generations of people living in relative peace under him while renovating the land. We could potentially have a beautiful, lush Elona now while having people that see Palawa as a hero, maybe even a demigod.

For once there might be a situation where we actually get conflicted. Would you break the peace and prosperity Palawa has brought for his people while knowing even though you’re “saving” them, you’re also dam-ing(censor) them into what could evolve into civil unrest and war. Though, to be far, that probably won’t happen. Just a potential outcome.

That would be a bit better, but the same overall effect could be achieved by just increasing the numbers on all our skills by a small bit. And that way, there’s no extra potential balance issues with some skills suddenly being able to spike for twice as much health/conditions/damage/etc.

50% =P I outlined it in the summary along with it being used for everything. I agree with increasing base for our skills/stats but ANET wants us in a niche “jack of all trades” role. This would keep that thought process while giving us the ability to be on par for a specific moment when we need it. Basically, the ability to excel for a single moment lol.

It could probably work and if they copy the warrior’s adrenaline it might even be relatively easy to code. But I’m not particularly excited about it. It seems kinda…plain actually. Just a bit higher numbers.

Well you may be looking at it in terms of just attack. As I said I want this to effect attack, healing, buff duration, and even conditional duration. The way I see it this would allow any elementalist to continue playing the way he/she wants, but still adding the ability to pop the Overcast for accelerated effects. We’d still have to worry about storing it, internal cooldown as well as proper timing/selection on the spell. This is more or less inspired by the GW1 mechanic and since we don’t have energy to block off and our cooldowns are already insanely high, I decided to take the route of charging and storage of the mechanic.

So basically, you want us to have something like the warrior’s adrenaline mechanic? Some sort of ‘super strike’ every so often, except ours will just be extra damage and not a separate skill?

Something of the sort except instead of super strike I would like to see it more as I said, overcasting as in GW1. Due to the overall scope of GW2 I don’t think they’d go around adding seperate effects to the majority of spells so I chose the most readily accessible option of giving us a tactical “choose when to use”. You can use it to overcharge burst healing, to get a slightly longer buff, or for doing more burst damage.

As for the Adrenaline, I’ll agree the warrior bar was just an example. I thought about a potential “overcast for each element seperately” where each attunement bar would have 1 overcast slowly charging/filling based on how many skills you used in that particular element which would give a little validation to those who want to duo-element spec.

This was a thought I had earlier about the Arcane traitline. Being forced to invest 30 points into it due to the Mechanic of our class has caused extreme stagnation within our class causing most builds to only rotate around 0/10/10/20/30 or 0/10/0/30/30. This is due to having such a high base cooldown on our attunements, so I propose a new solution. I’ll model it somewhat after GW1 spirit WITHOUT forcing the 30 points again or forcing anyone into a particular playstyle.

Before we go further I would like to remind everyone this is only a very ROUGH draft idea meant to actually give a discussion point. Rather than whining, I feel this actually has a strong effect on how elementalist COULD be played according to ANETS own rules. I would also like to apologize for the flippant style of writing I have as I’m easily distracted/amused.

Elementalist:

Elementalists are multi-faceted spellcasters that channel elemental forces, making fire, air, earth, and water do their bidding. What they lack in physical toughness, they make up in versatility and the ability to inflict massive damage in a single attack.

Overcast:

My version of the overcast mechanic would require a few mechanical changes but it’s meant to replace the Attunement Swap in our Arcana line. While this seems like blasphemy I would like to point out with this I’d like to see our attunements normalized at 9 seconds. With our attunements normalized at 9 seconds we would need a new “bar” or some similar mechanical notification with only 1 “charge”. This would be our overcast bar, perhaps even just supersaturating our “attunement icons” in accordance to the charge. The overcast bar would be charged via spellcasting and/or attunement swapping.

Now, once filled, the overcharge effect would be something of a vanilla “crit” which is 150% of the attack’s damage. This won’t apply to just damaging attacking either, instead, we’ll have a 50% increase on spell effects triggered by pressing the WEAPON SWAP key since we don’t use it anyway. I will note this applies to the entire skill and not just the first “hit”.

A basic offensive example would be:

If Lightning Whip hits 736/736, it’ll hit 1054/1054.
If Meteor Storm hits 2400, it hits 3600 per meteor.

However for non-offensive:

If you use Shocking Aura and overcast it, the aura will last 6 seconds instead instead of 4.
Obsidian Flesh would be extended to 7s instead of the basic 5s.
If Geyser would heal 600 a tick, it now does 900.

Also for skills with duel effects:

If Cone of Cold would hit for 500 and heal 200 a tick, it’ll hit 750 and heal 300 a tick.

I’m sure I’ll get a ton of OMG BROKEN complaints for this but I would like to point out this could be easily broken down for balance in 3 ways.

1) The amount of Attunements and/or spells casted before it’s avaliable
2) Keeping with the Arcana line, instead of Attunement Swap, we’ll now have Overcast Recharge “%”.
3) Designated BASE recharge.

I’m more than willing to discuss pros/cons for this idea but I honestly think it could do nothing but bring variety and reinvigorate the class as a whole. This would give players a great reason the continue investing in Arcana if they adore the Evasive Arcana/Buff stacking playstyle. Those who are looking for something else wouldn’t be forced into the 30 point sinkhole that arcana currently feels like. It’ll also add a little more APM to our class and most importantly, increase the “tactical” playstyle elementalists want….for the most part. Choosing which spell to overcast in certain situations which most certainly lead to a life or death situation and give us that feeling of tactical awareness again.

Again, sorry for the flippant, spastic writing style. I had to get this all down on “paper” before it disappeared from my head. I honestly hope this sparks some sort of a discussion as I do feel this could be a proper solution/addition for our class if we temper it out and refine it.

I think this is the best one I’ve made so far in getting the stats precisely where I want them. Attack with only food pushes me to 19xx, my toughness will be at 16xx, around 56%+ crit chance, 45% boon duration, 93-103% crit dmg, and what my other builds were lacking, 15.5k base hp without the wubwub buffs.

As I always do, I’d like to ask fellow ele’s about fine tuning the stats and if you believe you can find a flaw with the build so I can tune it up more.

You do NOT need realism to give you a sense of unsettling or fear. There’s a reason RE2 and Silent Hill 2 are still mentioned today about games that make you poo yourself. Aside from that there’s stylized unsettling as long as you’re devoted to it. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has wide open unsettling areas that are deathly quiet which makes you look for threats when there are none. LIMBO is stylized consistant of absolutely no “realism” but it’s incredibly unsettling. Then there’s Lone Surviver which is an absolutely chilling game capable of non-jump scare based fear.

What GW2 lacks is consistency and depth. GW1 was originally a fairly shallow game and anyone who denies that is diluted. It wasn’t till…I would say probably Prophecies that a conclusive, tangible story began to form. I’m fine with GW2 so far, it’s just passed year 1. They’re been testing a lot and been extremely experimental with everything. They’re juggling around a lot to see what hits and what sticks with the community. That said however, they NEED to flesh out this world more. There’s very little “lore” at work here. I won’t get too far into it here but I think it’s time for ANET to stop throwing stick/miss and start specializing in what they want to do.

Focus your teams, give them clear directions, bring GW2 up to GW1 quality. Hire some real writers, your “pub” cutscene for the aetherblade storyline was amazing, keep that format for cutscenes. Give us tangible threats that actually DO something when we fail.

If you keep making a “general” all around built game, you’re going to lose people. GW1 was a very specific genre that got a very fierce following. GW2 is as broad as possible to try and rope in people. Sacrificing depth for accessibility isn’t something I want to see this game continue to do.

Last time I had an “oh yes” feeling was when I beat liadri. Being partially color blind I couldn’t see jack in the arena. When I beat her, it was the first time since… god probably back during like week 1 when I had full exotic on my ele.

For D/D blob fights you mentioned 20v20. My guild does15/15 and 20/20 gvg’s and I’m the designated D/D. I suggest 1600(min) toughness and 800 (min) healing power, then run the oh so unique 0/0/10/30/30
