Thanks Arvid and Ascii & others who tested.
The results seem kinda confusing.. ~17k v condition damage and ~22k v power damage. And SR either doing nothing or next to nothing.
I will probably do my own tests.
The other question is toughness -> i have heard it is doign nothing?
edit: ok toughness works fine
got around 24k hp with 200 vit so matches the 22k
now to test condition/SR tree
Ok tested condition: got a bit over 13k hp with 200vit. In line with person who said around 11k.
@ arvid you are using 24 sec as base DS. I think it is actually 25 and if you use that with your numbers you get 14,5k which is more in line. Either case DS takes disproportionate dmge from conditions. The roudning to percent theory sounds plausible :/

Love it OP, but need more Xs on death magic tree.
Same.
Also played war, swtor and enjoyed more. Also played wow (where i sucked and there is no gear, so this is not the issue) and enjoyed more.
First time ever done more pve than pvp. I have tried tpvp; it was a lot better so at least one of their failings is the kitten format of hotjoin, which probably makes up a larger fraction of players due to the full grp req for tournament. Another might be the conquest format idk.
I just tried hotjoin a second ago. A thief finished me off without appearing on my screen, and was invisible for idk 5 seconds before he stomped me. A minute later I am attacking some mesmer (ps: most players are thief or mesmer), I get stealthed from some thief on my team and I notice I am hitting the guy for a while with my character still stealthed. FAIL.
Why do games insist on repeating same mistake of stealth classes + burst damage. Fail design. Particularly if in actual gameplay u get rendering issues with stealth. Do not include these classes. Pet classes, again fail, since no one seems to be able to code the AI properly the pet class player ends up with either a mediocre class (balanced around the pet, except it doesn’t work sometimes) or a too strong class (balanced around a non functional pet, except it works sometimes).
I am saying this as someone who has played stealth classes a lot. played witch elf in warhammer, rogue in wow, OP marauder in swtor but would have played agent if they hadn’t been (deservedly) nerfed. Oh, I have an 80 thief in this too. Stealth classes in this game even have the added bonus of being the most mobile and hard to kite (and SB does a kittenton of dmge if someone tries).
edit: i don’t think balance changes would make me like the pvp regardless since I dislike the overall design with high dmge, low heals, cast time on melee attacks.

I like the flesh golem jsut chilling out doing nothing after you died. :/
You guys saying we have best access to poison.. have you played thief? Poison on steal, spammable poison field, optional poison venom, poison on autoattack.
Necrotip Grasp now correctly state:
cosmetic skill that give you a beautiful scythe effect *
*this can be change on future since could be OP
LOL it pretty much is cosmetic.
I love how bitter this forum is.
It is the lack of meaningful feedback that aggravates a community more than anything else. We have posted hundreds of detailed posts but have gotten little feedback or directional statements from ANet which would allow us to get a handle on our favorite class’s bug fixes. All we need is SOME…ANY…meaningful feedback on the major bug issues.
Yeah what this guy says.
If they said something like, “yes we know necro is awful in terms of trait/weapon/utility/mechanic, and there is a rework planned” I would be happy. Or even some comment about planning to fix bugs.
necro just feels boring and lacking in power and range of playstyles. not the most boring class, i’ll give it that.
I like the staff of crossing with the dangling lantern and chain around the shaft which seems to totally suit necro, too bad it’s a temporary staff.
You can craft a permanent version. Probably cost ~100g+ in mats.
Pity the staff model isn’t more over the top.
@ OP, I think most non-GS legendaries/weapons suck in this game.
This is hilarious. Does it apply to dungeon bosses too, since a lot start out as green mobs (not yellow but still)?
If you are talking about the hotjoin spvp then I think you are totally correct.
Everywhere else I feel reasonably tanky, but mesmer or even ele (which is extremely squish) is better than necro for the 8v8 spvp. Lack of mobility, stealth, escapes, clones (the more people in a fight the more confusing it is for your enemies) make mesmer way easier to play in hotjoin. I found my favourite gear for mesmer, thief was berserker amulet since they can get away with it, but I had to take a tankier amulet and traits for necro for it even to be playable. Ele you can play berserker but you have to take cantrips and will probably spend a lot of time running away. Condition spec necro was not fun in hotjoin.
Agree with the posters above talking about conditions. We get a lot of conditions which is meant to add to our survivability I think (like the anti guardians, reducing damage enemies deal instead of reducing the damage we take) except the conditions suck in comparison to their boons.
Do you actually need teh temporary weapon to craft it?
Because if so, it’s just not doable with the money + dungeon token requirements in the timeframe..
Agreed. Really disappointed with how this game has done staff compared to other games. Staff are usually as awesome as greatsword, come on they are the largest weapons in the game, or should be. gw2 feels very warrior-centric.
http://donoftheslum.minus.com/mls0dTEZY
Where is the staff with skulls dripping off it?
Where is the staff with a giant butterfly/butterflies on it?
Where is the one with a semi-naked mermaid/angel on it?
The dungeon ones especially are very sad-looking.
I am not really a fan of being forced into certain trait line & the 20% cd feels too compulsory. I also have this objection with elementalist builds. Unless you take the trait it’s a 60 second cooldown which really is too long, for a kittening aoe spell they can move out of. Also the protection trait: why only 3 second compared to the protection uptime guardian, ele can supply.
Rofl talking about finger dexterity. Have you guys not played other mmos or something? You need hardly any keybinds in this.
You can get exotic jewels with those stats in wvw. Only way to get.
You can get exotic armor with those stats from some dungeons or karma (only 5/6 pieces from karma though). Quickest way is karma.
If you want tankier stats my advice is to get the 5 temple karma pieces, use knight (tough/prec/power) jewellery and either knight or dungeon pow/tough/vit weapon. Basically start out with karma+knight mix and replace as you get more from dungeon/wvw. I’m not really sure how much of a difference these tanky stats would make for wvw since the damage is ridiculous. They make a lot of difference for dungeon outside of one shot type abilities.
Arah does seem likely then since relatively few people are running it.
Sure, but I’ve now uninstalled it & I think that it has some of the worst pvp in any mmo I have played. It is just a joke & have little motivation to play or try to improve when I hardly ever encounter situations where I can say “oh I kittened up, do this differently next time”. In fact, worse than this, when I play certain builds I don’t feel I am punished despite making egregious errors and literally facerolling, which is why I use the term “joke”.
Time to embark on painful long (for me anyway lol) learning curve which is moba games, as friends have long recommended.
You’re meant to be able to do these dungeons at the required level. So a full group of 35, 55, or w/e should be able to do the corresponding exploreable mode. Full exotic & trait should not be required.
The butcher guy is so boring. Too much hp, too slow. The storymode is more of a challenge than the xp mode (any path).
Maybe try buried archives jumping puzzle. It is a tomb in orr with 2 risen knights and a veteran noble guarding it. I think the chest there may be big, can’t really remember but it does fit.
Anet doesn’t buff people, re gw1. Its fix/makeworse/or nerf
If this is true, time to delete my necro.
As for this skill, why do our break stun skills all have to have long cooldowns + suck. So if you have no one targeted will it still break stun? Pretty funny if it doesn’t do that either.
Yeah it’s too slow. The class is in a similar state to how it was at release. Thief, mesmer, and guardian are in a similar state to how they were at release. I saw faster changes between beta events so I know they could do something. Imo the game’s balance is a joke.
IMO there would be a lot more qq on these forums as well (why wouldn’t there be, very little has changed. minions still kitten. life leech still kitten. ds still kitten for condi build. ds trait line still crap since ds is crap. death magic still way too minion traits. axe still crap. etc etc) but a lot of people have just moved on & quit the game or rerolled.
As for the fanboys etc, comments like ‘oh why u being so negative’: why would I not be negative? If people aren’t negative, then why would they think something is wrong? There are other bugs which definitely should take a priority to class ability fixes such as the rendering & loading screen problems, but not many.
I’m glad a dev is playing necro.
I’m sorry, but what about the thief which just stands at range hitting you with SB for high dmge.
It only works coz most thieves are bad.
As for marks I am not sure the unblockable trait is actually working, I know it was bugged not to work and not sure if it has been fixed. Last time I played necro in wvw people were rolling thru my marks but this was a while ago.
You can just move out of the wells & if you avoid them he is really in trouble since the cd is soo long.
There is nearly 1.6 million butter on the TP at 2c (rock bottom pricing) The demand is less than 50K. This is wrong on a couple of levels. The buyers/sellers are never going to meet since you can’t put butter lower than it’s vendor price of 1c. If the people who want it won’t buy it for 2c, then it will never sell and continue to clog up the TP. That and the fact that the supply of butter is still crazy high.
People will sell for lower than vendor if theyre stuck in a dungeon and keep get stupid butter from loot bags (full inventory)
The situation with vanilla beans is ridiculous.
Also, if they hoped to fix people powerlevelling cooking for free levels, then their changes didn’t work. They just kitten off legitimate chefs. e.g. I levelled cooking 1-400 after the nerf in <30 mins. It cost more money than the first time, but not that much more.
All of the dungeons in this game seem to run on the idea of false difficulty. That is, all of the dungeons in this game do not have difficult or interesting bosses to fight with unique ways to defeat or defend against each one. This is true with mobs as well. Each mob has a knockdown that can be chained with every single other mob in the area. There is no system where if you are currently knocked down you can’t have another immediately stacked on top of it. I spend 90% of my time in Twilight Arbor on the ground looking at my skill bar counting down until I can get up and keep playing.
True difficulty involves strategy and some sort of tactics. This difficulty that ANet has constructed is false difficulty. Feigning difficulty by taking regular mobs and bumping their damage and health through the roof and watching you flail about through multiple attempts. I wouldn’t mind a difficult dungeon or fighting difficult groups of mobs if it became less difficult once I could nail down a strategy.
Case in point:
Flowers in Twilight arbor that immediately kill you if you step into it’s AOE range with damage that ticks every .2 seconds. If you kill them, they don’t have the decency to stay down, they respawn. In as little as ten seconds, even. So if you are fighting enemies in the area with them and you go down on an area where one is about to spawn, you have no chance to be revived, instead you immediately are finished off because a flower spawned near you. This is an extremely lazy and unfair way to make a game difficult. There are just some places where there simply isn’t any strategy to win.
Next time this happens kill the flower and get a free rez.
I agree 100% on the high hp thing. What is with the gold trash mobs with huge hp. They do more or less nothing yet take a long time to kill. Is just boring.
TA is an easier dungeon; wait till you do COE. Whole dungeon (yes all path) has 1 boss, with basically 1 ability. Bad design.
Is it even worth it?
Without making a build completely focused on DS usage or Scepter/dag Staff condition builds I feel utterly kittened.
Dag and Axe mainhands (while ive made a very nice sustain build with dagger healing) seem like they just do absolutely no damage and there is no way to make a pure damage necro (pure dmg meaning non-condition) without heavily devoting yourself to DS, making your dag / axe mh skills feel like theyre just there to fill slots and charge your ds.
Can anyone show me a dag/axe MH centric power build that actually works
One or both of them need to cleave.
I tried running minions at around 25 and found bleeds and kiting better. Perhaps I’ll look more into it using the tips you’ve given.
Except you can do both? Minions do not scale with ur own power etc, they fit into a condition spec pretty easily.
The autoattack on staff sucks (sooooo much) so you just wanna be switching it to use the marks and then switch back to whatever your other weapon is. I used sceptre for levelling since axe/dagger don’t cleave and at least with sceptre you can use epidemic for more aoe on mobs. I used minions and epidemic as utilities. Wells are good but the cooldown is really long and they don’t do too good damage if you’re condition specced, and minions are meat shields/aggro holders.
The fast way to level is by crafting (if you’re gonna get 20 levels from crafting make it the 60-80 levels). WvW, no point since you will just be at a massive disadvantage and it will be frustrating. If you can’t afford crafting you can try farming exploreable dungeons while you level. They give an enormous amount of xp & u can buy exotics with the tokens when you’re level 80. Also if you’re crafting at same time, craft yourself rares as they do not cost that much more and last longer. When I tried karma heart/events I found higher zones were dead with few events and those which were around were bugged. ALso event scaling is terrible in that with a few people it’s a lot more time-consuming than with many, so not effective means of xp.
I have thief and necro and from this poitn will never play the necro when I’m solo since I’ve seen what thief can do, but I will still play the necro with my guild. I don’t think conditions are that bad tbh because with the ground aoe usually you will get just 1 tick whereas with conditions they will still be taking damage when they move; and until they can cleanse it they will be in combat and unable to regen back. I haven’t played since they changed epidemic though; so if it’s as hard to hit/get to work as corrupt boon now, this may put me off.
It didn’t rly look like he did anything except die.
Agree with pendragon above.
I was saying they hit a lot harder than 1.5k. I have no idea where you’re getting that from. I know, I have played the phantasm spec and it is stupid, brainless high damage. Sorry for the shatter thing, I thought you were trying to say that this damage also is “fine” etc when you actually do agree it is ridiculous high burst.
The burst damage on it is not as high as what a Thief or a Warrior is capable of, and is easily countered by high defense builds. So while it is a little OP, it’s not even remotely close to being a huge issue and it’s still up for debate.
Just for you, I logged into SPvP and did a absolute maximum Phantasm damage build. It sucks horribly in PvP, for the record, because your character sucks in spite of the fact that the phantasms are decent. Any half-brained PvPer will recognize once the Phantasms hit that he needs to kill them… leaving you ridiculously outmatched.
A berserker hitting with a crit on maximum DPS build does 3k almost exactly on another Mesmer, now, how about on a relatively normal build that doesn’t sacrifice everything else for the sake of Phantasms? You will lose at least 15% damage flat from the Phantasm, if you’re smart you’ll exchange 15% damage for 20% Mind Wrack damage, and you’ll probably also lose Fury decreasing your critical hit rate. You may even decide to invest in something that isn’t glass cannon, but we’ll just avoid that thought.
So, as you can see, my number was clearly undercut, but not by a huge amount. I’ll have to test the Phantasmal Duelist, which is admittedly stronger, but I think you get my point. Sacrificing everything you can make a Phantasm strong, however, Phantasms are still quite easily destroyed and you’re left being very unable to handle an opponent 1 on 1. So basically, this build works against idiots and people who can’t do decent burst. It’s a sub par PvP build, especially when you consider they just made the cooldowns absolutely ridiculous, making an already hard to PvE class even more hard… ugh, bad day.
uh, I played this build. If you’re not facerolling with it, you’re doing something wrong.
How can you guys forget the mesmer staff field, which in my experience reliably and easily applies aegis.
I have never really used corrupt boon on necro because I felt forced into taking survivability utilities but I use arcane thievery on mesmer and it bugs out incredibly often. Either not working at all or not working partially.
With the ease which some classes can reapply buffs and the risk involved with corrupt boon (easy to miss, long cd, self poison) it seems very situational.
Tbh I don’t like how this game has no los/range check on skills so you can put them on cooldown even though something appears to be in los or in range, or was in range but moved out of range while you were casting. Sorry but I don’t want to be looking down always at my skills to see if they are red from out of range. This is worsened by little ability to control ability queuing. You also can’t cancel cast by moving which is what I’m used to doing (if u can rebind this plz tell me).
The ability queuing in particular is very strange. I have worse than average latency but it’s not thaat bad. e.g. stuff like I am pressing stomp key and my character keeps autoattacking. I’m not touching 1, I haven’t touched it in ages and it ignores me for like 1-2 seconds before I can stomp. It’s a separate issue from lag since I should experience it with all abilities but it only happens in this particular autoattack/stomp situation.
Another annoying issue is I use thief heartseeker to travel around map quickly but sometimes it will randomly port me backwards away from the direction I was facing. I used to think this was because I had some mob targeted but no, I can have nothing targeted and it will sometimes still port me backwards if some mob is hitting me.
This is more a problem with wvw than the class. Necro is relatively good for wvw imo.
You misunderstood my post or you just manipulated it to be like you wanted.
1. I’ve never said that the problem is to find the real mesmer.
2. Shattering clones is a consequence of spamming clones. The broken thing is in the fact that Mesmers’ clones/phantasms are many, on low cooldown and most of them are incredibly powerful.
3. There is no point to play the profession to level 80, because PvE isn’t PvP. Take Necromancer for instance, in PvE it is almost unkillable but than go in PvP and feel the pain.
4. Where exactly is the micro management? Cast your phantasm and let him deal bunch of damage for you? Or the micro management is when you have to dump them to deal massive damage?Again, sorrow, Phantasm is not the strength of the supposedly OP Mesmers. If you’re fight a build that has decent Phantasms, he is not a Shatter build, and Shatter builds are generally the ones that get called OP. Phantasms are actually really easy to kill, and Phantasms themselves are not enough to make Mesmer OP in the slightest. A Phantasmal Duelist in PvP (our hardest hitter) will hit for what? 1.5k? How is that OP? A Shatter build Mesmer can get 3 clones out, and shatter each one for 2-3k depending on the person if he crits on each (usually does). So again, you’re attacking a build that is not very OP at all, when the more OP build is almost polar opposite of the build you think is OP.
1. Fair enough, but what is your problems with clones then?
2. How does one “spam” clones? At any given time one has 1 Clone summoning ability (usually on a 6-12 second cooldown) and 1 Phantasm summoning ability (for each weapon set). The only build that can spam clones is one that has specifically taken away from their combat abilities and added the ability to roll to generate a clone.
3. I was suggesting you level to 80 then PvP. A lot of people are rolling Mesmers since word got out that we’re the secret uber ownage guys, and a lot of new forum posts are complaining about how difficult it is to be a Mesmer.
4. The micromanagement with Mesmers comes from managing Illusions and Phantasms. We have to be careful to try not to shatter Phantasms, we have to make sure that all of our Illusions are up when we decide to shatter, and we have to decide which shatter we’re going to use (generally Mind Wrack is used, but it’s not as good in some cases). All of this as well as managing normal attack skills that every other class has makes management a pain at times. So in the end, I think you’ll best understand what I’m talking about once you’ve rolled an 80 Mesmer. While I’m open to a discussion about how OP we are, I think it best if we save that discussion for when you’re extremely experienced with our class in PvP.
Though, I’ll go right out and say it, a certain build of Mesmer is OP to 90% of the classes it fights. However, it is countered by Engineers who are really tough (don’t know what the build is called), Guardians, and Warriors.
“1.5k”?
lmao“2-3k per clone”
Er, that adds up to 8-12k in one hit.How can I give anything you say any credit if you say stuff like this?
I have no clue what you’re even trying to say. You do realize I specifically stated that 2-3k per clone came from shattering, whereas 1.5k was phantasm damage, right? Or am I simply misunderstanding you? In fact, most shatter builds only have the ability to shatter 3 clones, we can take a trait that gives the shatter effect to our character as well, but a lot of shatter builds don’t — it makes you the squishiest thing in existence.
I specifically said Shatter builds can be considered OP, though they’re easily dealt with by tanky builds. Warriors and thieves can both match that damage, and any tank build can negate a huge part of it… so yeah, it’s not exactly “ruining PvP”, especially when you consider the guy was saying Phantasms were the OP ones, which they aren’t but the devs nerfed them anyway so now they suck.
My (probably accurate) interpretation of OP:
“If you are complaining about certain abilities/classes/builds in game it’s cause you’re a BADDIE. BAD BAD BAD. L2P etc. Any actual pro player would just shut up and find a counter.”
Not like I haven’t seen this same essential argument 100s of times in other mmos. Admittedly in other games balance has been worse and these comments more amusing.
I don’t really care, particularly since I can make a lvl 2 and play in spvp on any class. I just call it like I see it; I would like to do so without hearing same old refrain of “you’re bad”.
Also as for it being ok since the classes are somehow balanced at max skill cap. So what? Are most players at max skill cap? There’s a concept called efficiency: why would I roll class X when class Y can fulfill the same goal more easily, even when I’m bad, and as I improve it will always remain more effective till eventually the power lvl is the same.
Fine, but conditions shouldn’t be wiped when they go down. And downed state mitigation and hp should scale with toughness and vitality (if it does not already).
You misunderstood my post or you just manipulated it to be like you wanted.

I could care less about the jumping puzzles. Except for teh wvw one the only reward to doing them is the satisfaction of completing them, and they are pretty easy anyway. Although terrain exploit into keeps etc more serious issue, which is what people were doing with teleports earlier.
I am glad they fixed this bug though, it was a pretty important one.
@Kisses,
Try getting your hands on the “Duelist” armor, it’s the same one you see at Human/Norn Thief character creation.
And OT: Only if you enjoy and like the class despite its problems, otherwise the other classes do have it better right now.
I said only a couple of sets were decent. I have already factored in duelist and my character is already wearing it along with every second thief out there lol :/ Human cutltural is ok as well & vigil leggings. Just not much choice.
Edit: sorry for offtopic
I started watchign but looking at the first pull, why no wells? Why only use dagger and no staff on that pull. Where the aoe?
-It has decent aoe options for wvw, though if you are interested for this you might want to consider engineer also
-Light armor looks great, e.g. winged set, masquerade set, set from fireheart rise karma merchant, nightmare set, profane set, etc.
-The pets are cute imo and I prefer them to ranger pets in style. They are totally useless though for anything serious.
-It is easymode to level in pve since less squishy than ele and less tedious than mesmer
-Natural condition removal is good
-In general if you have bad lag or feeling lazy it is more forgiving/relaxing to play. Even the swiftness buff is long duration so you can kinda alt tab while running without recasting swiftness buffs as much. For dungeons though I think since there is so much 1 or 2 shot mechanics your actual class choice matters less than being able to avoid damage, and a different class would do more damage or give better grp support, so.. The one nice thing is blind spam on trash mobs but this doesn’t apply to bosses. You can also do condition removal but plague signet is bugged so it’s just the well and staff 4 (and other classes can also wipe conditions).
My main is necro but I have rerolled a thief. The damage is so much higher. Medium armor is hideous tho. Seriously every medium armor piece.. try the lvl 80 exotic medium armor. It is so hideous. There are 2-3 decent medium armor sets max. It all looks like ugly homemade cowboy/trenchcoat crap. In hindsight i probably should have made a male character. Where is the bondage/leather/spiky/sleek assassin type gear which you usually see for medium armor? Heavy armor is ok. I feel this is a big letdown for a game which is supposed to be about armor skins.
I think necros still feel like they’re in beta compared to a lot of classes given the huge number of bugs and issues with entire traitlines/utilities (minions, life steal).
My beefs with the class are these:
-Inefficient Trait pairs. (Crit and Cond? Crit does nothing for Cond except proc super weak crap. Why not Crit %+ Crit dmg and Cond + Cond duration? All trait lines are badly paired, forcing you to hybrid)
-Conditions lack of viability. (several things here, first the itemization for Condition dmg is bad. You can run power/tough/vitaility but condition is always paired with either power or crit. Forces you to hybrid even more.)
-Fears. They are absurdly ineffective in duration.
-Minions. A total joke outside of the rare 1v1 situation and usually even then.
Past that I love the concept of a durable caster with zone control and/or attrition capabilities. They just failed in the execution of the idea IMO.
Yeah agree with all of this. Was just complaining about the prec/condi gear and trait thing in another thread. You go condi spec? Here, you get to have a ton of a stat which does very little for you.
And ofc minions, still broken standing there not attackign my target.
add to this:
-uber long cast times
-most annoying autoattack in the game. (staff 1). I challenge anyone to think of a worse autoattack. The animation, the sound, the way it evokes those orr mobs I am so tired of, the long cast time and super slow projectile speed, the fact it is not a 100% projectile despite this, the low damage, not able to kill objects with it most of the time. It will also bug and not automatically attack sometimes so you have to do it manually, I used to think this was due to out of range but it happens when not OOR too sometimes. Every now and then I make a bug report qqing about staff; I hope someone has to read through them.
(edited by Kisses.1054)
@sundial, I also like my necro for group wvw, I think people are more concerned about spvp here. The devs say they do not balance for wvw.
@ the guy who said 4 is also good for condition spec since you can proc bleeds. No, you’re better off using staff 2 or autoattacking sceptre in that time. Even in aoe situation. DS really does suck a lot for condition spec even with change to 2.
ya, axe was really good in beta. Now not so much. I think when used with a MM build the vuln shred for the pets and ae cripple etc is what the play style its catering to. But as many pointed out its often still not worth it.
Tbh i would just like a reliable dps contributing offhand. Or atleast one without huge casting times, seems like necro has more and longer casting times overall than any other class….then again i havent played elementalist.
Nar I honestly think we have it the worst for cast times. Ele is pretty good apart from some staff abilities.
Also OP I think for bone minions you should be dividing the explosions damage by how often you actually can do it (cooldown+cast time of bone minions so around 20) to get more accurate picture of their dps.
