My main is a thief. I deleted all my characters to focus on the thief, but right now it’s so broken. I feel like it’s time to accept defeat and reroll warrior.

Thief is might get rifle and is kittened me off for HoT, and Warrior seems the most promising so far.

I haven’t played warrior in about a year now, and I only have on question.

Is GS/ Ham still a thing? WvW and PvP wise?

The moment you meet a ranger in WvW make sure you have access to cover. That is pretty much the only sure way to survive this, except maybe by forcing a Shadowstep.

I don’t agree. I do not know what you mean by losing the diversity. Ricochet got eliminated out of the thief’s kitten nal. It still won’t prevent you from playing P/P. Nothing Anet does should prevent you from doing what you really want to do.

D/D condi still exists and as a matter of fact somebody earlier posted a thread about that just recently.
You wanna do D/D? go ahead mate.
You wanna do S/D? go ahead. That are plenty of thieves with amazing skills with that combination.

But to say Thieves have lost their diversity is a little pushing it.
I do D/P WvW & PvP and P/D for PvE.

Diversity is fine, mechanic balancing is the problem.

Can that build also work with P/D on dungeons for PVE?

After seeing the Tempest, the only that could make me happy is an offhand sword because we are gonna get kittened.

MADAIR that paragraph with the example you gave felt like an action movie. Even as reading it, it did feel very fun and rewarding, and actually i was thinking about how they could improve or change the stealth mechanic, but still have no clue.

but FlawlezZ has a valid point, Anet made sure Stealth has drawback:
- Little to no damage
- Stealth is not really viable when you are trying to be a team player like capping,etc.

Maybe you are thinking about a high end meta gameplay that probably concerns very few thief players, and it is not in the interest of Anet. They already have a hard time doing class balances.

Think about the fact that if they make a change to our mechanics they will have to change to all the other classes to.

I am pretty sure, the HS spamming teef and the stealth spamming teef aren’t much of a challenge for you, and they will learn over time that spamming is never a solution. It’s part of the learning process.

IMHO, thief isn’t truly about stealth, it’s about mastering momentum. Just like you mentioned, deciding when you should go out all on your target and suceeding is the true rewarding experience.

I kind of understand his frustration, when i started playing it really annoyed me.

Dodges, invisibility, and blindness are the thief’s lifeblood.

If you cannot manage your endurance, invisibility CD & blindness, you are a dead thief.

(I might even add interrupt as a four point) .

Those three things are SO IMPORTANT, you would be better off checking those the CDs of those three instead of your hp. It’s THAT important.

You will have to get used to it. As a matter of fact, you do not even have a choice.

Keep your head up mate, Medium armor doesn’t make the thief.

I wanna thank everybody for those advices, D/P is a lot less tricky now that you explained it properly. I am doing pretty decent now in PvP and I will try WvW.

Still have a hard time doing the stow weapon trick, but it’s more like i don’t really need it that much.

DP is very versatile but to use it properly you have to know how other classes work. You have to know what is good to blind, what is good to interrupt, when it is best to stealth up.

There is no just general “rotation” in that sense. Only advice i can give you is make research on other classes, find out what hurts them most as far as interrupts, blinds go. Just few simple examples:
It is possible to counter current mesmer stunlock build if you predict mantra use and blind mesmer before they use it. Obviously trying to stealth up while they have mantra up is pointless as you would just get stun locked while trying to bp+ hs.

Another simple example: interrupting ele in fire attunement hurts their dps a lot, if they are in air try to stealth up or blind them, you can dps while they are in earth, use interrupts and dps them while they are in water.

Last example (from own experience). if you fight engi, if they are in rifle/pistol/tool kit use dp for blinds, if they go grenade kit use sb to kite and keep pressure.

Also, dp doesn’t have as much dmg potential as dd but you have more tools. I found personally that in many cases i am better off with disabling/avoiding/stopping enemy from hitting me and actually killing them with AA than trying to get backstab off that :
- has high chance not to happen because bp+ hs is very easy to interrupt
- hs+ bp is predictable and has huge tell
- a lot of classes have high acess to protection/weakness making bs hit like wet noodle
- by the time you get in right position to execute bs you might actually die

So as i said, it is better off use the set to prevent enemy from killing you and keep pressure via AA.

I think you nicely described why i like the D/P. The versatility it gives what i really want to master. Thank you for your advices!

The best advices so far (for those who don’t like to read too much):

. Head Shot (#4) + Shadow Shot (#3) technique ;
. Shadow Shot (#3) in general direction to reveal hidden foe;
. Shadow Shot (#3) + plus stow weapon to shadowstep without reveal.

@ Tao & Deceiver, I like the conversation here but I am not asking about D/D. I am asking about D/P.

I just think D/D it’s mostly a game of patience and timing and how to never mess up your C&D, but we do not have to agree.

There are other people who may be interested in reading about properly playing D/P.

4 + 3 sounds like a little waste of initative to me.

And Weapon stow is not binded to your keyboard by default if you check in your keybinding options it one last options to set. to do it just watch shadow shot as it about to hit the target you press weapon stow canceling dagger swing that is instant cast that fallow up after shadow shot.

Also another use for shadow shot is if your having hard time with someone in stealth you press it in general direction you have a good chance teleporting on top of them.(using fire sigil is basically a stealth reveal)

also if your fighting a target that very single swing heavy weapon(such as hammer warrior). you should keep tab on your blinds so you do not have to waste your dodges. basicly on that type of fight you just run in do a couple hits move out 130 melee range when he try to swing again you just shadow shot him again move back in.

Head shot really should only be used for punishing heal or elites or very selective skills.. in my personal view i think skill just in general put you at a disavdantage using your initaitve that way

Another tip you do not have to be standing on your black powder to heart seeker stealth you start heart seeker off an jump into it gain stealth. (most commonly used if someone uses a heavy skill you dodge back heart seeker threw them gain the stealth.

i am not sure any of that was helpful to you but yeah.

That was very insightful thank you. Especially the Shadowshot to help reveal other thieves. Never thought of that one before.

When you use shadow shot (#3) you can cancel it using stow weapon. This allows it to be used as a gap closer while staying in stealth, or to mess with their heads in stealth, since it blinds. They will think a burst is coming, making them dodge most of the time. This leaves them open to burst afterward.

Recently I learned that Headshot followed by a shadow shot works very well as a combo, and disrupts the enemy very much. The headshot is enough to make them have to stop and think for a second, but a shadow shot after it will cause a blind and deal damage, which will disorient them even more.

Ok so if I understood it correctly, if I am stealthed and use ShadowShot (#3), I don’t break stealth. So i just need to time my weapon stow correctly is that it?

I consider myself a decent D/D thief. Which, let’s be honest, isn’t anything special.
Every time i lose a fight to a D/P thief, i just have to sigh, because not only it requires a lot more skill than D/D (I am not trying to start a flamewar here), but it’s just also look better.

I just recently got my Zoj ascended pistol, (I did not know you could change stats on your ascended weps…) So I think, i am more than ready to go:

I have watched a lot of D/P vids, i am just that much of a fail.

On a serious note, I feel like if we get a sneak peak on a druid’s trait line (the Druid is the Ranger’s specialization class), we’ll be able to gauge even more precisely what we will get.

I would be surprised if Druid doesn’t get some sort of sniper ability since the class will be plant/bio based.

If my guessing are correct:

1. Anywhere you walk could be used as a weapon especially witht he help of the Druid’s spirit.
2. The dev cannot make the druid completely drift of its original range-based class. Dragonhunter still remained a guardian, and Reaper still remained a necro.

but with Faith, we can overcome it all my brothers.

the problem is smoke screen. Not only this skill is too situational, but there are other skill that will be generally more beneficial than that one.

This same logic also applies to acrobatics. If you are using D/D, you want to focus on your goal : remaining stealthed at all cost and bursting.

The acrobatics tree is for those who do need to be constantly invisible (S/D) and those who expect to get caught.

Just think about it, if you are invisible, you don’t get hit. period. so need to trait to improve your dodging, or stun breaking, and all this none sense.

Stick to the goal of D/D and you’ll understand why acrobatics isn’t worth it.

Doesn’t really matter. You ll have to get both sooner or later, preferably before HoT.

I played all three and i love them all very much. I must also admit that I have yet to master D/P play.

Let’s not kid ourselves here. in WvW the best players I have seen were either S/D or D/P, but that doesn’t make the D/D players sucked.

Also, we should all agree that the D/P skillset has the most utility because that #4 (Head Shot) is priceless. Being able to effectively use all those skill is another gameplan compared to S/D and D/D.

Thieves are really weak. BUT saying Thieves are dead is just stupid.. Whoever thinks Thieves are dead, then don’t play the class.

I feel you man… i feel you. You need to be EXTREMELY careful when fighting certain classes. But yeah 6k backstab really do not do us justice. :/ I also agree that Stealth doesn’t even help if you keep hitting very low.

The problem with thieves is this: the longer the fight, the lesser your chances of survival.
Obvisouly, low hits and damages naturally drags the fight on.

Just make it as short as possible.

Let’s just hope, Anet solves this soon.

oh and i use traveler runes. permanent 25% movement boost can help you land those backstabs like it was Wintersday, be careful with annoying runes that summon things they can keep you in combat and slow your escape..

I am goign to assume you are new to D/P

make your camera look completely vertically on you, do #5 then Heartseeker multiple. around your blacksmoke. you could get 3 stealth counts that could help you stay invis. and increase your survivablity. Don’t keep spam #5 & #2, it will be your own death.

You can also #5 +#2 = stealth. then #3 + #1 on your target for teleport backstab. time it properly, and you will see.

Warrior : ( especially, Greatsword & Axe+ Shield)

note that when the Axe + Shield is up. be very very very careful because you might get downed in teh next few seconds, when the warrior starts blocking, i say retreating completely or be invisible.

you must and absolutely must take advantage of Hundred Blades , it is a chain. This means you should be able to casually dodge towards his back and own.

last thing for warrior skill when you steal from warrior is very precious. when you get it, do the following:

- stealth
- activate your Basilik Venom.
- use that F1 and close on him. he ll regret it.

Guardian
Since you are DP, you must use your safe distance and shoot two #4s to break his block.
it is a must that use your #4 properly. it is very hard but hey stopping a heal is game breaker mate.
Keep the skill that Stole until he tries to heal.

ALSO IMPORTANT, your #5 cannot blind all the Guardian’s Greatsword’s #2 (the whirlwind) attacks. it will block maybe 2 or 3, so get out immediately.

Mesmer
as D/P idk what do tell you. but it’s definitely about patience. since im D/D i C&D the clone to chill and take my time. the thing with mesmer and other Scholar classes is the simple fact that at one you just need to go all in to kill them. or they will keep messing up with your head.

Necro

the Fear from Steal is crucial, and switch to bow if the necro is trying to protecting him/herself with those AOE zones. make the necro realize your not falling for it. or use your stolen fear to make him get out of there.
If you have dealt a lot of damage and the Necro is using the Death shroud ( turns green phantasmal) , retreat and wait until he wastes his Death Shrourd.
This additional life bar is only but a timed illusion. stay calm, and he will recuperate the low that he/she had.
DO NOT MISS YOUR STEAL.

obviously run away when they turn into Liches.. it’s at least 1.5k per hit. you must get out.

ranger, or Hunter lol

Do not EVER allow the ranger to think he is at a safe distance. Your steal is Gap closer, use it IMMEDIATELY after you get pushed pack . you got D/P so your Shadow Shot is a blessing because it will be the best thing to use against him.
#3+ #5 = a lot of blinding if he does not react, then you can quickly Heartseek his kitten in stealth.

you must also IMMEDIATELY DISCARD the stolen skill. it’s only regeneration.
The good thing about the D/P vs Ranger is that ennemy pet will alaways be by yourside lol. It means that your #5 will make it miss 50% of its attacks.

As for Elementalist & Engis i cannot help you. i just do not want a sure way to get them.

Like the Mesmer, you must force yourself to go all out on them or the heal will outclass by far. especially engis. good thing you got #3.

I just tried it for a few hours. I don’t like it. I see a lot of positive things from coming from the trickery trait but the damage just doesn’t satisfy me. I get around 60% crit with that fury steal, but it doesn’t crit when i want to, and it crits on the worst skills lol.

I think thieves are too squishy to leave things to chance. just letting go of this 100% crit chance backstab is too much for me.

but I am still going to agree with you and , say that this build is better. Much better simply because of the versatility and the fact that it allows for a lot more aggressivity.
I mean, Sleight of Hand is so important and rewarding. That alone can save your life more often than the usual 2/6/6/0/0 or 0/6/6/2/0

Conclusion:

This build is not bad at all, and it IS better than the default builds. However one must get used to the major drop in damage. Are you willing to sacrifice this? I could not.

Personaly, i use 2/6/6/0/0 on my D/D. I just enjoy my guaranteed crits, and the fabulous sustain that comes with the stealth.

I also tried 2/0/6/0/6. In my opinion, it takes longer to kill your ennemies, but you don’t depend on backstab that much which is also nice. Steal on 15sec CD is great, but the damage output is really not guaranteed. 20% crit chance which gives me maybe 60% crit chance in combat is not enough for me.

SOMETIMES, i use 0/6/6/2/0 for more stealthy roamings, but like I said. Sometimes.

I am gong to try it out right now, and see how it feels. I run 0/6/6/2/0.

There’s currently a WvW stealth trapper build for rangers. It uses the newish Superior Runes of the Trapper, which allows rangers to stealth when they lay down a trap. The runes give 3 secs of stealth and 3 secs of quickness per trap. So with hunter’s shot, they can potentially chain 12 secs of stealth and 9 secs of quickness. Max would be 15 secs if you start and finish with hunter’s shot. It’s not indefinite, since after laying 3 traps their traps are all on cool down. Also, if anything activates a trap, taking damage, the ranger will be revealed.

Rangers are just as easy as they’ve always been.

If they have Signet of Stone, then go super aggressive and wait for them to inevitably pop it. Use your Shadowstep to get around a corner and just wait it out since you can’t do kitten about it. When your Shadowstep starts blinking for the timer it’s safe to re-engage. This still applies to Sic’ Em users as you’re abusing terrain, not stealth.

If they’re stealth spamming, then they’re using Superior Rune of the Trapper.

Honestly, you shouldn’t have issue with them, just keep in mind 3 things.

• Abuse terrain with your mobility. Longbow doesn’t mean crap when you LOS them.
• Their steal skill removes condis and can be used for some clutch HS combo heals
• Their pet is full kitten: free D/D, P/D, or S/D stealth bait.

Yes definitely. Thank you for the advise, I was leaving the WvW garrison and heading south, not much cover in that regoin, but yeah the LoS part is quite obvious especially if they have all those spirits out with them.

Chill mate, chill. I am not here to hate on rangers, I was surprised I saw rangers invis. for that long. That’s why I came and asked if others had that experience, and how they dealt with it (i.e my d/d #3). We’re thieves, we don’t have any other options but adjust…

Thanks Kral, but you just confirmed the problem. It’s not just three seconds. it’s a very long time. I don’t mind waiting three seconds. Waiting 10 second or more is a problem.

I have some suggestions for the thief class.

Signet of Agility: Increase condi removal to 2, decrease endurance regen to 50%. This would help out non SA thieves while keeping S/D acro thieves in check.

Assassin’s Equilibrium: Gain protection (or vigor/ whichever) when attacking out of stealth. This trati is pretty much useless, give us something that will actually help us.

Dagger storm: More reliable hits, decrease cooldown to X (75?)

Shadowstep: Clear condis on first shadowstep, so you don’t have to waste both shadowsteps just to cure conditions.

Last Refuge: Swap with Shadow’s Embrace.

Death Blossom: Stack vuln instead of bleed, scale better with power for AoE damage, increase reliability of evade.

Dancing Dagger: Increase projectile speed.

I like all of it.

- Dagger Storm is good but the CD is just makes it less reliable than B. Venom.

- This “swap” you are talking about, althought i really agree because it would help every thief in terms of survivability, I would be surprised if Anet lets us have this huge benefit.

- Death Blossom. you found the answer. Vulnerability & Weakness instead of bleed stacks, simply because thieves who deal conditions damage just have pistols.

- The Shadowstep, just like the “swap” is kind of pushing it I think. I am not saying i don’t like. im just thinking in terms of feasability.

- Signet Of Agility :really smart. I like

In order of priority, I would like to see the following the most:

- the " Swap" Last Refuge vs Shadow Embrace

- Death Blossom

- Dagger Storm

- Dancing Daggers

- Shadowstep

- kitten Equilibrium.

I am way too lazy/proud to post on the ranger forum. It would be a disgrace to the familia lol.

I have two remarks I would like you to clarify:

1. Some rangers in WvW can stay invisible even longer than thieves now? How do they do it? It’s not indefinite is it?

2. Some ranger got me revealed out of nowhere. He wasn’t even close to me. It happened multiple times, and obviously, all the escape mechanism just do not work anymore. At that point it’s green light for them to nuke.

I just ended up spamming Death Blossom ( D/D #3, yup it actually had some use tonight) and ran away with no hp.

But still, how the hell do they force a reveal on someone? that’s kind of OP I think.

You are saying you prefer to have just 1 weapon with no off hand , then 2 weapons of your choice?

I use Bowl of Seaweed Salad most. If you have problems with conditions you can also use Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup, but it is just better that you learn how to dodge.

Why: So it’s totally unfair when a thief uses SR as a decoy for AoE fields. As in the thief drops down SR but doesn’t enter it – maybe instead they use another stealth skill – leaving the SR field empty and people will AoE the empty field. This is totally not fair, an SR should be changed/nerf.
Suggestion: Make the center (where the little house icon is) of the SR field be “attached” to the thief, as in it will move the whole field with the thief.

Conditions cure – another strongest option.
All classes have a 9-10 sec limits for autocure and skills with long cooldowns

Thieves cures it every 3 seconds in stealth (and 1st cure immidiately), also, sword’s 2 just didn’t have any limits, spammable and pretty low cost

Believe it or not, warrior is my second favorite class. But this thread you just started is just another complaint.

All i see you telling ppl to learn to play, but it seems to me you just have a very hard time understanding thief mechanic.

You say it takes a lof skills to time your shouts? I think it takes a lot of skill not to get hit in the first place.

You say Steal+Cloack and Dagger doesn’t miss? Clearly shows, you are out of arguments.

You are talking about 9 dodges in a row, we both know this is a serious overreaction of a bad thief. Plus, if you see a thief dodging you 5-6 times, why can’t you simply back away, wait a few secs, then resume your attacks?

Thething is this: Not every thief is using S/D to perform your famous “9 dodges” , not everyone uses weapon set with Cloak Dagger, not every thief Shadow Arts for condition cleansing. but the mere fact you are just going all aggro on thieves becasue of those few aspects of the class shows you are just out of blood, you should be ignored and dismissed.
Btw this condition cleansing trait is such a huge sacrifice/ commitment.

-How does health regen take skill ? you just resist the urge of activating your healing signet. that’s it.

- Your dodging capabilities are Limited because you have HEAVY HEAVY ARMOR, that’s pure logic, even IRL.

- Eviscerate takes as much skill as landing your Cloak & dagger. don’t give me this none sense about eviscerate takes a lot more skills. You miss your skill, you waste ressources/opportunity that’s all, and it’s not any different between classes.

I get rekd all the time by everyclass. Also, I destroy everyclass all the time. it’s good and bad ALL THE TIME. This is what is great about this game. But no, you just want to be RAMBO and be able to faceroll the rest of the game.

@ 12’ 10 or so, I saw him do this:

Infiltrator’s strike
(then very very quickly)
Infiltrator’s Return
Jump
Steal

The last three commands were in less than a second. The steal counteracts Sword 2’s Return.
