In Gunbreach Hills, Plains of Ashford, when I try to pick up an unexploded mortar round, I go into a loop animation where I pull up to stand, then go down again to pick the round up again, ad infinitum (essentially I’m doing a teabagging-style routine) unless I try to manually move myself (WASD).

Started since patch.

I do think it might have helped if they’d have provided a palette of all the possible colors, denoting the new ones from the old ones, on either a tooltip flyout or a “product” page for the dye packs in the gem store.

Well, if you are curious to see the new colors, you can open the Trading Post and do a search for dyes, then sort by price. The 12 new ones have very distinctive icons and tend to fall on the first two pages if you sort price from highest to lowest (some are more then Abyss, none are less than 5g last I looked). From the TP screen you can preview them to really see if they do much for you.

I wasn’t referring to providing a palette in order to see just the new dyes, I was referring to it as a means of openly displaying which dyes are possible, including the old, “boring” ones at the point of purchase to reduce some of the complaints from those who don’t get anything special.

I don’t know if it’s broken or unfair (everyone has the same odds, presumably), but I will say it creates more frustration than it should. Then again, any form of gambling/randomness is going to cause that to a (probably) large portion of people that engage. But we all know gambling is a massive real-world money machine…and ANet is, after all, a real-world company.

But it seems odd that with ANet wanting to keep extracting money from players (it’s necessary, not evil), even more bank/bag slots seem like golden cash cows that aren’t being exploited heavily enough. Especially with the number of oddball, and non-stackable items that keep growing and growing. It’s almost like a reverse conspiracy!

There are grey-ish shades in BOTH the pools of 25 colors. The flame packs in particular include “ash” colors in the theme, right up to an including some of the 6 new colors in the flames sets being greyish and ashen.

Ahhh. Have to admit I didn’t think of the ash/charred angle for the Flame set. I retract my remark about false advertising. I do think it might have helped if they’d have provided a palette of all the possible colors, denoting the new ones from the old ones, on either a tooltip flyout or a “product” page for the dye packs in the gem store. I think of “flame” as red(dish)—and I doubt I’m in the minority—not grey, but yes, it makes sense if you look at it more broadly.

Regardless, if he got any sort of gray-shade dyes from a Flame pack, then frankly, something’s wrong. Whether you like it or not, one of the cultural hallmarks of MMOs is that relative uniqueness is vastly more important to players, in general, than actual visual appeal. One’s personal status (they kittened out my original e-term) is measured based on rarity and value far more than how flashy something looks. MMO makers are, however, smart enough to meld the two more often than not to maximize their revenue.

Yes, and if there was a super-designer hoodie for 800 gems…some people would buy it only to be in a smaller group, visually-speaking.

Personally, I feel the OP has a point with regard to how trivially the two items are differentiated. I realize it takes time for their artists to make this stuff, but if one is potentially paying real $, they probably should encourage their artists and modelers to up the visual aspects of higher-priced, similar items beyond a simple pattern or color change. Dyes are just colors, these are supposed to be clothes, which could easily be spiffied up in many different ways if only to encourage more people to splurge. Seems a tiny bit self-defeating, actually.

Yes, that’s essentially what I was saying. I.e. the responses here aren’t as unworthy of the question as some implied.

Gem price scaling would be a can of worms ANet should avoid. This kind of thing exists in the real world and only serves to hose those with less cash to play with. It may make fair business sense, but it smacks those with less ability to buy gems by, inversely, giving them a worse exchange rate. It’s not equitable across the board for all players, and as such, shouldn’t happen.

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

How about a live exchange update? You type in your gems or gold numbers and the exchange rates flip back and forth as you watch, in real time (or as close as possible given the tech involved). Click your button when the numbers seem right to you and you lock in and verify your trade at that rate. There’d still be some minor variances possible as a number changes slightly in the time it takes your brain to reach your mouse finger, but probably not enough to ever be an issue.

I’m not holding my breath, but I like the image all the same.

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

It’s functional but definitely needs a usability overhaul. I spend a fair bit of time messing with the TP and a good 10-15% of my time is spent clicking around in circles trying to get back to pages I was just looking at before I clicked through to another (not having back options on all pages mystifies me to no end). Some of that wasted time is couched in having to watch the Items Sold and Items Bought lists repeatedly show me “NO RESULTS”

I get the impression there aren’t many people working on this aspect. Too many basic, obvious points remain missing or poorly implemented to be receiving major focus.

But, those “wasted” runs starting bugging me. It’s 1 in 50, right? Right?! So I knew I was due! (Ha!) Grudgingly decided to give my SAB crew of 7 chars one farewell cycle and close the book.

5) Wasted development time to try to make group based content balanced for individual play (balancing mobs, in-dungeon puzzles, rewards, etc.).

Scaling already exists in-game so calling it wasted development time is really grasping at straws.

Not to mention that effort will never be wasted if it satisfies the desires of enough players. How many players are in “our” boat, one way or the other, is a question that would be interesting to see answered. I wonder if ANet has ever studied the topic.

6) MMORPG = Massive MULTIPLAYER Online Role Playing Game. MMORPG =/= Massive Singleplayer Online Role Playing Game. (That’s why there are single player RPG’s such as Skyrim, The Witcher, Mass Effect, and so on. )

Doesn’t make even the tiniest bit of difference if there are options to do everything solo whilst people who want to group are not impeded in the slightest by said solo option. As Fiontar pointed out in his post, ArenaNet already possess the necessary tools to give both solo and group players what they want.

I play MMOs to be in a game world that’s populated by other players, not necessarily to directly interact with them on a regular basis. In fact, the nature of GW2’s DE system and how it draws players together to manage an event explicitly serves the solo player mindset. I’m sure that’s not unintentional, at least to some degree. The issue is that there is a great deal of content (and rewards) that would otherwise be appealing to solo-inclined players that is, essentially, blocked off unless they willfully forego their favored style of play. Not so in the other direction, which is not necessarily an issue of unfairness, but rather a point of fact.

Cryptic title, eh?

Can a player that doesn’t do PvP (inc WvW) or dungeons acquire the materials to craft a legendary? Or are there components that require you to do either/both of these things?

At the moment, I have a load of Bubble Baubles, and I’m wondering if I should trade them for Obsidian Shards, Crystals, and/or Phil. Stones, which in my limited knowledge have some utility towards legendaries. I may or may not ever be able to acquire account/soulbound dungeon-only or PvP/WvW stuff, so I don’t want to completely waste them on stuff I may not be able to use (would probably save them until next SAB installment, instead).

Kruhljak.2705

Wondering if there’s a method to rescind a botting report once it’s been made?

I’m a very active bot reporter (primarily mining bots) and I’m quite careful about doing so, however, a few minutes ago I realize I think I made a mistake and while the accounts I reported will probably be reviewed and left alone, I don’t want to be hit with the big stick for abusing the botting system.

I saw a whole slew of characters popping up and disappearing at a node in Metrica Province, took screenies to grab the names and then noticed they were all from three specific accounts. A bit later I saw them again at a different node, spawning in, gathering, then logging out, and in again with another character very quickly. Having seen them more than once, I reported each new one I saw before they stopped showing up (this was about 25 chars).

However, in retrospect, I think this may have just been some guy with multiple accounts in the habit of parking all his alts at herb nodes and cycling in his chars to gather, then moving to another node and repeating the process. I know this isn’t botting, and I wouldn’t have reported them had I realized what was probably going on before doing so…but it certainly looked like it initially.

Then again, it could still be hacked accounts….

No one’s “making” anyone play content they don’t like. Extrapolating from your words, if someone’s playing given content, either it’s sufficiently interesting to play, or the reward is sufficiently worthy to endure the content. Either way, it’s the choice of the player. I don’t see an issue.

Where’d you get that impression? What else did you think it would be? It’s the method ANet uses to generate revenue to keep the game moving along, and there was nothing hidden about it. They can’t do it with in-game gold, after all. There was no chicanery involved in the way it was described, if that’s what you mean. It’s a place to buy conveniences and basic options such as character slots…with gems(=cash). There’s no pay to win in there, since there is no WoWist infinite gear treadmill carrot in the game to “win.”

Just so happens there’s also an option to trade in-game gold for those gems. Which, one would think, should put a nice clamp on any F2P whiners out there; though no doubt, nothing short of an industrial vise could hope to shut them up.

@Tallis: So, in other words, he’s complaining that there’s financial inequality between players? He might as well complain that some players have better-paying real world jobs as they too can acquire gems less painfully.

There will always be haves and have-less’es, and there’s no practical way around it—some players play 15 hours a day, some can’t, some can zoom through dungeons racking up tons of profits while others would rather slit their wrists that grind like that.

If the ratio were fixed at some mythical point where those who are complaining would stop complaining, there will be no incentive at all for those ex-complainers to spend actual $$ on gems, thus ANet will simply be cutting off a major potential, albeit grudging, revenue stream to please people that apparently have no desire to help fund the continued existence of the game they’re spending so much time enjoying (presumably). Simultaneously, it will bring more players that are willing to spend some cash here and there for gems into the group that doesn’t have to (i.e. a “moderate” fixed ratio means players need less in-game cash to get the stuff they want, thus reducing the revenue even more).

As I said before, the stuff in the gem store is not an entitlement, they’re not gifts for your time spent hacking mobs in the game (but even so, they/some CAN be). They’re there for ANet to make ends meet and then some. If you don’t like the exchange rate, frankly, tough beans (or come up with an actual FEASIBLE, mutually-beneficial alternative that will appeal to you and ANet…seems some folks think that’s easy to do…g’head…do it).

It may behoove some complainers to tone down their googly eyes and become practical like they have to in the real world. You can’t have it all in either place, because someone’s got to supply it, and they want reasonable compensation to keep doing so. In-game gold is entirely worthless to ANet. Not sure where the disconnect is between a game and the real world is when it comes to this basic concept.

Apologies for the length.

@Gasoline: You appear to feel you’re somehow entitled to the items in the gem store under your own terms. Why? The items in the store are entirely unnecessary conveniences. The fact that it’s possible to trade in-game gold for what are essentially commodities ANet needs to sell (for real $$) to produce revenue to continue to fund the game is pretty kitten generous, IMO.

@lynspottery: Perhaps for you, but I’ve never had any issue screencapping them before they disappear with the exception of cases where I don’t notice them ‘porting into a nearby node. In my experience, they take at least 2-3 seconds to do their stuff and wink out, which is far more than enough time for me to press a key. In fact, I still have 14 of the most recent mining bot screenies in my game dir. It’s quite functional for me, at least.

But yes, something better is needed. And (at the very least) actual code that can log every mining action and monitor where the miner goes after it’s done. Any target that shows up at another node with no intervening movement, or reaches another mode well before it should be possible under any legit circumstances (easily calculable by devs in the know), should be INSTANTLY bot-flagged and temp banned, with a notice sent to the peeps that handle these things to verify and process. I’d wager 99% of such instances would be bullseyes, with any outliers being flukes. I’d much rather be in a game where there’s a tiny chance I could be temp banned by mistake than one infested with bots screwing up the economy in multiple ways.

Irritating sound effects

Kruhljak.2705

I have some issues with certain weapon sounds being a bit underwhelming, myself. In specific, the hammer. Much of the time I hear a little “plink” sound as if I’m tapping my enemy with a tin ball-peen toy hammer. I want a nice, crunchy “kawhump!” when I smack someone with a 15lb block of iron. Axes, as well don’t really sound like they’re making much purchase when they hit. I’m going to assume that some of the sounds are, shall we say, “family-proofed” in the way blood and gore are pretty much nonexistent in this game. If this is the reason for this sort of lightweight, almost generic sound effect usage, I’d love to see some option similar to the music playlist so users can plug in their own sounds. A nice “boingggg!” from a hammer would be fun for a while, actually. After all, it’d only be local, so no one else has to hear my axes chopping through mail and bone if they don’t want to.

On the good side, I really like the ambient sounds in the game, though some, such as running/pouring water, cut in and out strangely (could be my card). While I love the music and think Jeremy is an absolute master, after five months I’ve chosen to turn it down to barely audible (FAR longer lifespan than any other in-game music) so I can enjoy the ambiance. I especially love the Grove, and the various swampy areas and often just idle in those places with my headphones on while doing various tedious junk on other screens.

In a nutshell, chef and artificer appear to the easiest (read: fastest and ultimately cheapest) to max, though chef gets a bit complicated. Skip armorsmith and weaponsmith as there are frequent dead levels (levels where the items you make are expensive to craft and literally can’t be sold for profit).

If this is your first character, I suggest you just play the actual game and not the silly Crafting Wars within the game. You’re not being punished nor “losing out” on XP by ignoring crafting, you’re freeing yourself from the doldrums of standing around making widgets while dressed in armor and bedecked in weapons—a bit of a dichotomy there.

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

Those things you mention were found in-game. Obviously, you can buy the dye packs with in-game gold, which anyone can get. However, the purpose of them being in the gem store is to drum up real-world cash (something I certainly do not begrudge ANet from wanting), so that has to be the proper focus of any complaints.

I hope ANet will reconsider and try harder to adhere to the concept of innovation the game, as a whole, displays when dealing with new gem store content. That is to say, don’t fall into the pit of ticking off your player base by using this RNG stuff. I’m not a bean counter that can say with any certainty, but I tend to think providing these things without the veil of the RNG would generate more income over time as well as engender more good will between ANet and the players.

Unfortunately, I suspect the gem store is handled by people other than those we are familiar with re general game content, mechanics, etc. That is, bean counters vs game designers/suits vs devs…and those in charge probably see the old-school concept of RNG (in other words, the lottery approach) gating as more profitable. Maybe it is, but it still comes with unsavory baggage.

Guardian Scepter is Broken

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

My conclusion from having used scepter as my primary Guardian weapon (yes, I know, I’m not a legit G in the minds of “good G” players):

It’s not a bug, anymore than any non-homing ranged projectile attack is a bug. The game is leading the shot, so when a shot launches it determines the proper angle based on the target’s movement and speed at the moment the projectile is launched and sends it where the calculations determine the target will be in order to intercept them. This assumes the target moves in a straight line and at a consistent pace. I see this with all “slow” (as opposed to fast, as with bullets) projectiles such as arrows, fireballs, etc. It’s more noticeable with scepter because the projectiles are fairly slow despite having been sped up in a previous patch.

Your video is a good example of the issue, but as I said, you can do the same thing with other projectiles using the same “test.” You just have to adjust for the relative speed of the projectile by increasing distance between the weapon and the juking Asura.
