Fair enough. And what happens when, in a couple years, you’re still unable to acquire that mini because your peak skills aren’t sufficient regardless of what you may think you’re capable of? You’ve tried 300 times, and it just ain’t happening. A few others have somehow managed it but no amount of YouTube or Dulfy can seem to help you do it.

Do you eventually just accept defeat quietly, or do the complaints begin again?

What if, in another instance, you manage to get it after many, many failed attempts. What do you tell all those others with lesser skills but equal desire, who’ve tried even more than you, but probably will never master the skills needed? Just keep trying?

Do those that want a complete collection have to be at least an imagined level of skill to deserve it? What about total lamers who can barely kill a lone ettin, but want all those cool minis, too? Do you just tell them to shove off, this is only for good players?

The point of my example, as extreme as it is, is to illustrate that there will always be people that can’t get something no matter what IF it’s gated behind a sufficiently difficult trial. It takes no skill to want to collect every mini in the game (note I said “want”), but for some that want them all, even Liadri may prove to be impossible for them. And they’ll be left perpetually in this empty-slot limbo land that may only get worse over time.

Oh, and lest we forget situational minis. Should Evon Gnashblade and Ellen Kiel minis come back, too? Those were specifically designed to mesh with a specific leg of the Living Story—an event that, presumably, will never reoccur. What will those that came in after that event concluded get to say? Should ANet just make those available again, entirely out of context, completely ignoring their relevance to a single, one-time event?

Yes, they could do this, but in my opinion, it just guts any special-ness certain minis have, and I’m far more against that—even if I never get any of them—than I am in favor of mollifying those that just simply must have every single one to the extent they may even quit the game entirely.

So, with all this concern for a gaping hole in a tab list due to an exclusive mini you’ll probably never be able to get…

…What happens if ANet goes further along the lines of the Liadri mini? Far enough with a new, entirely optional, “ultra hardcore focused” side event that only 5% of the player base will be able to complete (in reality, not in the context of what ANet says their testers can do)? The mini, like Liadri, is account bound so that only those players that legitimately earned it can show it off as a mark of their superior skills in whatever test was required to acquire it.

How do you handle this if you’re simply not up to snuff in this particular uber-test? Do you complain that it’s unfairly hard (despite it being an entirely optional, “has no other impact on anything” event) and you should be able to get the mini in the gem store? Do you demand ANet never award minis that aren’t easy to get or in the gem store, too? Do you insist that gaping hole—for a legitimately acquirable mini—be stricken from the tab to satisfy your ostrich-like “out of sight, out of mind” desires? (Come on, we all know you’ll KNOW which minis are missing, anyway, and it’s going to eternally gnaw at you.)

I’d say one could reasonably expect the devs to mask empty slots for promotional minis that cannot in any way be acquired in-game. And I’d agree, since I don’t care either way, that it wouldn’t be out of line to suggest all empty mini-slots except for those that come in the gem store mini-packs be masked, as well (or have a checkbox option)—though I think that’s catering to too small a group to be worth the effort. But beyond that much, no, I think this is one of those cases where a small but vocal group are making a lot out of very little. Those sorts generally get ignored because there are far more important things to deal with that affect a much larger number of people.

What 25% drop? The majority of popular commodity items have already recovered from any short-term dips due to mass mat sell offs from champ boxes and the like. Ectos are up, for instance. Iron has already recovered. Cotton is already creeping back up. Crystalline dust has jumped. Orichalcum ore has jumped. Lodestones are about the only important commodity that’s taken a hit. I can look at just about any other random commodity and see that IF they suffered any brief dip, they’re coming out of it already. For those that market in T1 mats and harvested food, many of them have enjoyed a large rise recently due to the outflux of people in the relevant regions.

The invasions have lined most players pockets a great deal more than whatever small losses they might take during this brief downtrend (smart traders won’t have sold to depressed markets, anyway, and currently stranded—reasonably positioned—listings can sit for a while until the trend inevitably turns up again).

Ascended gear will force many T2+ mats to rise, as well—most likely—as exotics as they both feed that machine. A lot of mats and exotics have been acquired from the recent events…. There’s not a lot else on the TP that’s important for traders.

At current, I’d bet the vast majority of players that perceived themselves as having a hard time previously generating income to sustain themselves as they saw fit, are giggling uncontrollably at the sheer amount of crap they’ve acquired for basically spamming #1 a billion times.

So, I have no idea why your sky is falling. At some point markets will stabilize again, complainers will start complaining again since they won’t be able to make quite as much profit as they were while markets were in greater flux. But in this period, as far as I can see, ANet has quieted down most of the lack-of-gold complaints. The invasions and their rain of loot functioned quite well as pacifiers. But nothing lasts forever.

Well, for some, the balloon tower achievement was bugged here and there in the previous leg of this LStory sequence, so ANet’s being fairly consistent. At least there, though, you didn’t have to tag every last tower to accomplish the goal (I wouldn’t have, if that were the case, as two of them were bugged for me).

ANet should really wake up a bit and ensure that all achievements that require one to accomplish many sub-tasks to complete should not require 100% of all possible sub-tasks to be done. This is just an invitation for one single little bug to crop up and screw it all up for many players. Excess is always a good safeguard. In this case, perhaps 10 of the 13 would have sufficed. After all, it’s just repetition of the same task, anyway, and if you can do 10, you can almost certainly do all 13 if nothing external got in your way so those last 3 are functionally irrelevant to proving your ability to earn the achievement. And then there’s the RNG aspect of the map “rotation” and the lack of simple tracking (jeez, even GW1 had strikethrough list tracking in many/most such kinds of quests; in fact, as I type, Wayfarer’s Reverie is going on in GW1, and every leg of that multi-part quest chain has a list that gets each required location you must visit struck out as soon as you tag it, so you can instantly and conveniently know what you have done and what you have left to do. Why the step back in “technology” for GW2, I don’t know.)

Pardon the digressions. I was distracted by someone strutting about in sex-bot form….

You know how in typical single-player games (primarily shooters) you get to a spot where you’re presented with what is essentially a pile of gimmie ammo, health regens, new, better weapons, etc.? You’re then funneled through a one-way path where you’re immediately bumrushed by a hundred enemies and six bosses….

Well, I had a personal suspicion—which I mentioned several days ago in another thread—that this windfall of loot was a setup for something to come that is designed to require massive amounts of gold to accomplish. In a move to forestall as much of the inevitable whining from players not having enough shiny to do/acquire the next big shiny the absolute instant it’s possible, they dump easily acquired phat lewts on us in anticipation of…

…the massive outlay of coin that will be needed to craft Ascended gear. Granted, much of the componentry (I scoff at dictionaries!) will require grinding dungeons, JPs, WvW, etc., but a lot of what looks like will be needed is T2+ mats. A. Lot.

They did just recently warn us about a shake-up in the GW2 economy. Well, now most of us can handle some of it much better than before. Well played, ANet, well played.

Then again, perhaps it was just to mollify some of the existing “I can’t make any gold in this friggin’ game!” bleating. Who knows. I, for one, don’t find this sort of content particularly interesting and didn’t bother with anything beyond what I needed to get the sex-bot tonic. One thing it did accomplish is to bring a lot of people together on a common goal. Umm, for a few days. Then it was just completer vs farmer. Well, nothing’s perfect.

I’m one of the “lucky” that have been marked. Scarlet’s been on my kitten for a while now, and generally just murders me once or twice when she’s gone berserk. I’ve thought, okay, I can deal with it despite my growing urge to smash my keyboard over the nearest dev’s head (they’ve been cagey about staying out of my line of sight, so far…).

But when it gets to the point where her antics make accomplishing tasks—those tasks the devs set out for you—impossible, how is that smart design? I can understand occasional harassment. Even the occasional sucker-kill (which I’ve put up with several times already), but when I’m in the process of trying to do a daily to get this meta completed, and I get murdered twice within 30s of zoning in, then get jumped AGAIN within 10s of that (just happened before this post)…it’s gotten to the point where I’m literally being shut down by the devs and their clever idea.

I’m going to assume that this level of rabidity is just a chance and not some kind of permanent escalation. I’m also going to guess that I may have been the only (or first) marked target that logged into that particular overflow, so I got all her tough love for myself.

However, if this continues to happen, I’m not sure how I’ll handle it. If it somehow prevents me from finishing the meta….

Kruhljak.2705

This is something I’ve griped about myself. I’m a big sucker for atmosphere, and one of the things I really love is night time lighting and the ambience it gives. In this game night time lighting is present in many places, but it’s mostly washed out by the pseudo-daylight everywhere else. This also applies to underground environments, as well.

ANet has their philosophy on art/gfx style, but I want the choice to decide how dark it is. I’m the one looking at the screen, after all. If I want “realistic” dark nights where I can’t see six feet in front of me while I’m out in the wilderness, who’s it going to affect but me?

I know ANet has a vision for its art presentation but IMO this would only enhance it. I see no downside to it, especially as when implemented as a graphics option rather than a globally enforced “one-size-fits-all” change. Fortunately, ANet’s been pretty good about providing player-chosen options, so there’s always hope they’ll agree this is a worthwhile option to consider.

As for how it might affect WvW, if it’s an option, there’s no issue.

The only other thing I can think of that may require a bit of extra consideration is how this would affect underwater environments as the lighting/visibility is handled a little differently. Even so, it shouldn’t be hard to strike a baseline relative balance between open land areas and underwater, and let a single slider control both. Or provide independent sliders.

I want to be rezzed! Or not...

in Suggestions

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

Ok, so I’ve reached the limit of my patience when it comes to trying to rez/help downed/defeated players.

I’m tired of having them waypoint out while I’m in the middle of doing so. I’m tired of watching them stand there like zombies because they were AFK and will only be slaughtered again in a minute or two. I’m tired of wasting my time.

So, I make this suggestion: add an option that when a player gets downed or defeated (especially the latter) that they can click while they are downed/defeated, not as a default toggle. This would change the usual blue downed/defated icon to something with a distinctive color, halo, ping display, entirely different icon, or what have you that will immediately tell anyone that can see it on the map, “That guy needs help!”

Making this something that is selected as soon as they are downed/defeated removes the issue of people setting a toggle that will always show them as wanting to be rezzed when they’re AFK, etc. They must do it at the right time or their icon will remain normal and those who would rather not waste their time will know immediately the player is AFK or otherwise not interested in being rezzed. And those that, by habit, will try to rush over and help, won’t be wasting their time (and sometimes risking their own selves) to help someone that neither wants it or, in some cases, deserves it.

As someone who has, up until now, always gone out of his way to help downed/defeated players, unless I see someone dropping during an active fight, I will no longer bother (unless the player somehow asks for help) until something like this is implemented. So there! ;-)

As someone suggested above, a simple, obvious solution was available: after a win vs a particular boss, just close it off, or remove the reward. Being so obvious, it makes one wonder if they actually do understand how MMO players tend to tick.

Kruhljak.2705

I’ve gotten used to closing and reopening the client everytime I transition to a new area, which has allowed me to play open world content for 1-2hrs before I crash out. I’m doing the same anytime I see those lovely blue and green diamonds instead of the TP page I should see.

However, when I try to go into the Crown Pavilion, I can interact with the merchant and such, but if I try to actually go into any of the wedges to fight, I crash almost immediately. I just tried lowering my settings to absolute minimum, which netted me 9-10FPS, but it still crashed right as I got into things. Strangely, on the first day I managed to wade into the Centaur wedge with a zerg and fight for quite a while (until they abandoned me to my doom !shakes fist!), but ever since…not a chance.

I can understand issues with the Crown Pav. due to the sheer bulk of textures and other such things that weigh on older GPUs/OSs, but crashes in the open world? No, those must be ironed out or the game becomes almost unplayable—or at the least frustrating—for many people.

Despite this, I have confidence they’ll have things together eventually, just hopefully well before this event is history.

This game was touted as being fully functional on mid-range machines, and as far as I know, no devs have stated that things have changed. My machine is about 2yrs old and was functioning near perfectly (rare GW2 crashes, perhaps once a month if that) even after many hour sessions until immediately after the patch. Whatever they’ve done, may indeed not be an issue for those with better machines, but there are a lot of people playing on older hardware/OS’s that are being severely affected.

Since it wasn’t my machine that changed, but the code, there’s little to do but wait on ANet’s coders to suss out the issue and hope it’ll leave us lower caste types enough time to enjoy the majority of the new content.

For me, I’ll have a new machine up and running within the month, but I can easily sympathize with those that aren’t going to be so lucky if these new/resurrected issues drag on.

Unfortunately, I can join you in some of this misery. Since the patch, I’ve crashed out 7 times. I haven’t crashed out, except after very long sessions, for several months. This much crashing is reminiscent of beta, for me.

I’ve checked/reset my graphics settings to their original modest levels (my machine is a bit older, but again, I haven’t had crashing issues for a long time, and was on for several hours just before the game went down for this patch).

I’m crashing out in all sorts of places, and while doing mundane things. I’ve seen the BL pane show up with big blue and green unfocused diamonds prior to a couple crashouts.

Whatever they did with this patch, it’s destroying what was a perfectly stable game, for me, immediately prior. Only good thing is I have a new machine ready to build shortly that will eat my current one as an appetizer, so I’m hoping this mess will not matter to me. But until then, I guess I get about 30-50m of play before the inevitable next crash.

(Yes, I’ve let the game send in crash reports for those times where I haven’t had to forcibly kill the process.)

Of course they’re pushing their minigames. There are more meta APs out of the minigames than anything else. 3 for Survival, 2 for dungeons, 2 for open world, 2 for Candidate Trials, and 1 for a gimmie (use a token). It may not be a major leaning, but there are a LOT of people that don’t like one or both of these minigames, and for many/most people, they take quite a bit of time to do. If someone doesn’t like dungeons, and/or can’t complete Candidate Trials 3/4, they’re obligated to play the minigame in order to complete the meta (if they don’t opt to do dungeons they aren’t fond of).

If they’re going to add stuff under the guise of storyline (i.e. Living World) they should put most of their time into making new event/activity content that would actually have some relevance to the storyline. Preferably out in the open world where the vast majority of players are comfortable. Instead, we get irrelevant minigames and simplistic tasks such as “defend the gold” and “find the crystals.” In fact, except for the minigames, there appears to be virtually no development time spent on the rest of the things you need to do to get the meta achievement.

Where’s the context? Where’s your Utopian vision of change and how it should be?

What is it you want? Infinite node mining? Infinite quest running? You want to “catch up” if you miss 10 days, so you can mine a node 10 times or run those “dailies” 10 times in one session?

Minigames and jumping puzzles are cute. Side stuff. Which should remain that way. If you want such things, just whip out a console and knock yerself out. Many of us bought an MMO title for MMO content.

For my part, if the game had no jumping puzzles and never had a minigame trotted out, but instead had more complex, deeper storyline with relevant, broadly playable PvE content (not just an end dungeon) to support it properly, I’d be quite satisfied.

At this point, one can barely, if at all, complete a main Living Story (i.e. storyline) achievement without having to do jumping puzzles and/or minigames. Sorry, but I fail to see the “storyline” or “emergent, breathing world” aspects of such things.

I agree, Raine. After all, these items would be a constant means of extracting cash out of new/returning players, and those who balked initially but have changed their minds.

I’d guess that since these three items were tied, animation-wise, to the Living Story episodes and doing the same thing down the road would be questionable, they may just bundle up a three-pack later on that has no special animation and possibly less fancy skins. This way they won’t tick off those who got the originals (which would then remain somewhat special), and will make many others happy while generating cash for ANet at the same time. Looks like a 3x Win to me.

Whatever happens, it should be some months down the road, I’d think.

If they made an easy/normal mode to choose from on these dungeons, then there should be no rewards from the easy mode other than to see the story. Any form of scaled rewards would only lead players to grind away at easy modes because they would run it 5 times in the same timeframe as a single regular mode.

No slight intended, but that sounds just a tad bit elitist. How about we also say, “no drops from any mobs prior to Orr” (or whatever zone/region you feel is the most difficult)? Why should anyone doing the “easy” zones get anything for their relatively smaller effort?

All activities have—or are supposed to have—appropriately scaled rewards. If devs made it so the sum value of rewards in an easy mode dungeon version were so attractive that it was a siren song for hordes of slavering farmers, then it’s their mistake (cough CoF1 cough). On the assumption they’re smart enough not to repeat certain dubious decisions and/or are quick enough to correct them, there’s no reason to make easier mode versions rewardless, just appropriate like all other aspects of the reward system are expected to be.

As one of the old guard (as in relative “geezer”), I have to support the concept of dungeon difficulty levels. My issue is one of decrepitude: I simply don’t have the reflexes of those teens and 20-somethings, anymore. In the short term, yeah, I can manage, but when a fight can go on for 20+mins with the same repetitive requirement of jump, dodge, run, turn, twist, flip, etc. I just end of dragging down whatever team I might be with (who will mosly be younger folks). Thus, I just stay away from any hard dungeon content as I know I’ll just fail the team.

Easier modes with lesser rewards is a good idea for us and others like the OP and won’t take away much of anything from anyone else, and shouldn’t be a major time sink for devs. Annnnd it would make a lot of people happy.

Is it my imagination or is the use of a Consortium Harvesting Sickle (the infinite use one, for those unfamiliar), faster than regular sickles?

A few times today I bent down to harvest a node and a second or so after I began another guy waltzed up, waved his sickle and was off and running before I even stood up out of the animation. I saw the goofy water and vines animation as I rose, so I’m pretty sure his harvesting wasn’t aborted each time.

It sure looks like it’s measurably faster. And if so, it begs the question: does this extra speed qualify, technically, as an in-game advantage (something most want kept out of gem store items) vis a vis quicker, less risky, harvesting in areas where mobs effectively guard nodes? To me, it appears the user barely has to stop to accomplish the harvesting…much like teleporting bots appear to do…before moving on which makes them far less susceptible to being attacked during the process.

I recall the entirely valid complaints about the original animation being slower, so I wonder if this extra speed was a quick way to pacify those affected. Or is this indeed just an optical illusion?

Unlikely it’ll become available. It’s one of the “loyalty” rewards for playing GW1 in depth. It would be insulting for ANet to offer it as a regular option, and they know what sort of backlash there’d be even if most that have access to it don’t use it. (I used it until I hit L80 and got a Mystic, as I also found it to be a quite attractive/elegant skin.)

How crude!

Do better salvage kits give more material?

Not that I’ve ever noticed. Better grade kits do, however, increase the chance to yield a higher (+1) tier material (though that’s not always desirable), and better chance to salvage upgrades.

PvP Finisher Storage

Unlikely to be of global need, but it’d be nice to have space in our PvP lockers for some of the missing finishers, such as the Snowman and Gift finishers from Wintersday. I’d prefer to hold these over until next winter, but in the meanwhile, they’re eating up (admittedly little, but even so…) regular storage/bag space I’d prefer to have available for more immediate things.

If I’ve just missed where they’re supposed to go, please clue me in. I saw all the other normal finishers in the PvP locker-space, but none for these.

Special items in BL chest in the future?

Probably not. With the South Sun crates, they’ve shifted away from stuffing new content into the BLCs. BLC keys can be farmed, and they know it. With the current system, they can leave that alone and still generate revenue hand over fist (so far as I can tell) from RNG “boxes of the event” without fear of people farming to any relevant adverse effect. Unlikely there’s a reason to save them for any special events anymore. However, it might be wise to reserve them until Halloween (or Thanksgiving, perhaps) rolls around again, just in case. If there isn’t anything new added to get from BLCs and we get “Pumpkin Pots” (and “Mega Pumpkin Pots” in the gem store) or whatever instead, then you’ll have a pretty good answer for the future.

Having said that, there are still (I’m hoping) some good things hiding in BLCs, they’re just rare as hen’s teeth.

Criticism on Effigies

Burning the effigies is, apparently, a ritual intrinsic to the Dragon Festival itself. It’s symbolic. That alone qualifies it as consistent with the storyline. However, I can’t argue that it’s too simplistic content-wise to be done for anything other than the achievement. Then again, it’s just one isolated thing amongst several for the event, so I’d suggest people try to stop whining bout every frickin’ little detail and chill out a bit.

Dragon Bash achievement is still 10?!

So much whining. You’d get less from a room full okittendergarteners with too few toys to go around.

edit: haha, 2 points if you can guess why that got kitten-masked…sheesh.

Pet damage.

The fluctuation in tool tip damage after leveling is a result of scaling. Scaling blithely assumes you not only gained a level but also suddenly had all your gear stats upgraded to some assumed “max” point for your actual level. Which results in the amusingly counterintuitive issue of having LOWER stats than you did a second before. Maybe this happens in other games, I don’t know, but it’s the only game I’ve ever played that functionally smacks you down when you level up before hitting the level cap.

And yes, tool tip damage claims are almost entirely worthless in many, many instances. They usually don’t reflect damage you will actually do, only some calculation based on your relevant numbers and your effective level. It’d be kinda neat to see your t-tip damage numbers modify on the fly depending on what target you have selected so you could actually see “real” damage predictions rather than functionally useless numbers that may or may not bear out.

But for now, I completely ignore them except when I change stats around so I can get a feel for the changes.
