I think the old animation was missing frames. It got to a certain point then snapped to a different stance. It was ugly, but you’d think they’d bother to fix the problem rather than just hide it by diminishing the appeal of the animation considering many people paid cash money to acquire it.

Why should you take fall damage when you haven’t fallen? It’s a teleport skill, not a movement skill (like Swoop or Ride the Lightning).

Thanks for the reference.

I find it absolutely amazing that for a couple years plus I’ve never seen this behavior in action until recently, yet I nearly always use HotM to get to LA, frequently have full inventories when heading there, and routinely let my bouncy chests build up until I’m right and ready to pop them.

Bouncy chests auto-opening on entering HotM

If you have X number of bouncy chests (ones shown in the lower right corner) awaiting opening upon teleporting—might also happen when loading in after logging out from there but I don’t recall offhand—one or more of your pending chests will auto-open and the contents will be dumped into your inventory if you have sufficient space. If not, you will get the “You are Encumbered” popup and a full inventory if it wasn’t already full.

Looks to me all pending chests beyond a certain fixed number (I’m guessing 5 from observation, but since only 3 are shown at a time it’s hard to tell without proper testing) will be opened as I’ve had multiple chests opened and their contents dumped into inventory as evidenced by the chat log.

I haven’t noticed this behavior upon TP’ing or loading into any other place. It is predictable, and consistent with HotM—it will happen every single time if you have enough pending chests.

The transaction box is narrower and the listings show 6 entries rather than 5. These are both beneficial if not important changes. Text in the current buyers/sellers no longer gets changed from dull grey to white when highlighted (just stays dull grey) making the left half of the line where the highlighting is the most intense very hard to read. This should be changed back, or fixed if it’s a bug.

Otherwise, I see nothing new. Several bugs still exist. Full tab support still not implemented in all areas. Inconsistent search function capability from one section to another. Essentially, nothing that needed fixing has been fixed that I’ve seen so far.

It would be nice if the devs could bother to inform us peons about such changes and/or fixes that have been made that are beyond cosmetic (i.e. functional) rather than letting us find them on our own. I’m not into easter egg hunts when it comes to GUI use.

One-click entry delete bug in TP

I’ve been wondering why some items I had in my buy list have been suddenly disappearing as if the order had been filled in record time, yet only some or none of the items ever show up in my delivery box and no/too few records exist in my bought list for them.

Just now I finally figured it out. Whereas you would normally have to click “cancel” then “confirm” to clear a buy order in your transactions list, if you inadvertently click in the space between the “cancel” button and the vertical slider line it will instantly, without confirmation delete that entry from your list cancelling your order.

This obviously needs to be fixed ASAP. I can only imagine how many orders people have accidentally deleted simply by clicking around the crowded interface to manipulate the lists.

Doesn’t have to be a short time. I logged out of LA while standing at a crafting station, and logged back in about 30 minutes later in Trader’s Forum. The reason you give may be correct, but the quick relogin detail is inconsistent or irrelevant.

It’s happened to me four times today, with different characters, in different zones, with different times (usually at least 15-20 minutes) between logout and login. The novelty is beginning to wear. Maybe it’s a plot by the corporation behind the waypoint gates, ‘cause it’s costing me extra silver to repeatedly WP back to where I was several times a day. The sneaky little rats….

Salvage Kit - Why I consider it a nerf

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

It might not be a nerf per se but it sure is a really annoying and unnecessary change.

This bit me bad tonight doing back to back AC path runs. After 2 paths I was swamped with runes. Usually I quickly salvage, deposit, and run along. Can’t do that now, because the only way to get rid of these things is to tediously drag them out one by one, or leave the instance and travel to a merchant.

No one is complaining about getting more loot. The problem is the current horrible way to interface with it. There is no current good way to deal with them, just a few really bad workarounds.

And what do you suggest?

I believe the suggestion was that Anet should not have buffed something that nobody ever asked a buff for.

This isn’t a buff, it’s a fix to bring the claimed recovery rates into line with reality. A lot of people are aware that most of the kits didn’t return what they claimed, and have complained over the last couple years. It’s died down over time probably due to fatigue and seemingly deaf ears.

If, for example, it says 20% chance, it should be 20% chance. Thus, they finally fixed the problem. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a nerf or a buff, it is what it’s supposed to be. Well, assuming it isn’t now a far higher %age than it should be. I haven’t done any testing yet.

For me, the bottom line is that it takes literally seconds to dump excess/unwanted sigs/runes out the window, so to speak, so I feel this entire whinefest is too picayune to be taken seriously. But I suppose if enough people are bothered by it, ANet might come up with something to mitigate the effect or allow some sort of settings for salvage kits, but that seems pretty unlikely.

Targeting in GW2, what do you think about it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

I used to use a combo of target nearest and TAB when needed, but when they changed the target nearest to target literally ANYTHING without any regard for logical details like line of sight or field of view, without simultaneously adding any options to allow individual players to filter or prioritize what gets targeted…I switched to click targeting. For those that use that method it is an absolute pita in many instances and virtually impossible in others which might imply how much I despise the current target nearest implementation.

IMO, the targeting function should allow a user to prioritize various types of targets. For instance, I almost never need to have any form of autotargeting include yellow targets or inanimate objects, even if they’re attacking trebs or other such things. They don’t move, so I can easily click them. What I want to attack 99.9% of the time are the aggressive mobs that are in my field of view, with priority on mobs attacking me, then those that are nearest, and then, possibly those in field of view but which aren’t attacking and may not be in LoS but still in FoV. If a situation warrants targeting neutral moas and/or things out of my FoV, I should be able to finesse the setting checkboxes (or whatever) to enable that.

I.e. I want a targeting mechanism—something that is arguably one of the most important aspects of a combat-based MMO—to suit ME, not a one-size fits all methodology. Granular vs globular.

I fully realize this may be restricted by extra drain on processing resources what with thousands of extra details having to be assessed before a target is chosen. But…I still want it, and still dislike the current methodologies/options…all of them.

Also, I’d like a proper method of 100% clearing of targets both for myself and pets/minions. Currently, it’s entirely hit or miss. I can do all the usual things to supposedly clear a target, yet sometimes I’ll come back into view of a recently attacked, but “cleared” target, and I and/or my pet/minions will start attacking again. Another thing I notice is that if I target and attack a mob that moves through me, I lose targeting and stop attacking. When I move to regain LoS, I don’t start auto-attacking again (this is intentional as far as I know). This is in direct contrast to the first example, which causes me to start attacking again when I DON’T want to. It’s very annoying.

This isn’t about the DC’s/rollbacks, this is a somewhat earlier issue. Perhaps a month ago if not less, I started to notice that many times I will log back into the game in a location different from where I logged out. Up until then I don’t recall having that happen more than a few times and usually only after patches.

Lately, it’s been happening all the time. I’ve logged out in Hoelbrak and logged in in Lion’s Arch. I log out at the mystic forge in LA and log back into the same instance (same ip) 10 seconds later, and I’m in the Trader’s Forum. I log out in Metrica Province outside the reactor, and log in outside the entrance to Rata Sum.

Anyone know if this is some intentional change? A result of a change to megaserver-ing or something? It’s very annoying because it doesn’t even require a map instance to have to close or any appreciable time to pass before it happens.

Here’s a new one I haven’t seen mentioned. When I go to My Transactions, and define the level range to search, it’s off by 2. For example, I narrow the range to 56 / 56, and it shows me L54 items. If I change it to 58 /58 it will show me L56 items, and so on. For the astute reader, you will guess you can’t display L79 or L80 items using the level filter as your input is hard-capped at 80 / 80 which shows only L78 items. This occurs in all My Transactions sub lists (Buying, Selling, Sold, Bought).

Out of curiosity I checked the price on that hammer (about 93G + change), and thought if that guy lost that like I lost my generic rares, he’s going to be kittenssed.

Good luck. Dunno what the policy on that sort of thing is. A rollback implies a loss of data, so there may not be any evidence for cust serv to verify it actually happened.

Hamfast has the right idea with the three-tier option. ANet knows this is an issue since they’ve had tons of threads (including my own when they minbogglingly changed Ho-Ho Tron to ring his bell almost endlessly—fortunately, they did reduce that eventually) about this. Why they’re dragging their feet could have a good reason, or they’re spending all their time on HoT, leaving myriad important bugs and annoyances to fester until later.

For those that have thrown the babies out with the bathwater and are playing without sound entirely, mini sounds can be adjusted using the Effects slider in your sound options pane (F11 to access). This is going to affect several other things, but it’s better than running silent.

Shame. There are a spare handful of such things still active across all the beginner sections, but even so, to me, those sections feel hollow now.

Why is Double Daily Fractal still happening?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

Comfort zones, learn to get out of them. That’s the point of dailies. Dont like fractals? Bone up and run one. Find a group that isnt total kitten.

So, you advocate pushing players to do things they may have already decided they don’t like or don’t want to do for any one of a variety of reasons? No concern whatsoever what those reasons are? Easy to say when you don’t have any such issues.

Besides, is it any more bizarre than the logic of “I dun leik dis dilly, gif us nu 1z” from some people?

Ridiculing a group of people simply because they want more variety when more variety is hardly difficult and would have at least a few obvious benefits only serves to trivialize your opinion. Unsurprisingly, you’re not claiming that more variety would be bad (and providing reasons), you’re just saying “It’s for your own good, so suck it up!” The last time someone said that to you when you complained about something YOU didn’t like, did you just shrug and say, “Yeah, you’re totally right!” I doubt it.

It’s simple: Anet’s not changed it since they introduced it, which should be a big friggin neon sign to you people that they intended it to be this way.

ANet’s changed lots of things WELL after introduction. Further, the daily system ITSELF was changed long after the initial form. What does that neon sign tell you?

Ergo, working as intended, stop asking for it to be changed because you simply dont like what shows up as a daily.

So you think people should bend over and take whatever’s thrown at them without speaking their mind because doing so will never change anything for the better, if at all? Not all complaints or opinions that are counter (or irrelevant) to yours are a waste of time. Unless you’ve never complained about anything, and have always accepted exactly what was served up, you’re stance is hypocritical. It’s one thing to state your opinion, it’s another to suggest that counter opinions be stifled because they might bother your preferred status quo.

edit: also, it’s not “cant complete the daily” it’s “wont complete the daily.” MASSIVE difference between being unable to do a fractal and refusing to want to do a fractal.

True. However, there ARE dozens of other things that could easily be made into dailies to allow those who want to stick with PvE and don’t want to do fractals for whatever reason, to do so.

Frankly, there should be a separate dungeons/fractals daily set, anyway. The AP cap’s there, so it doesn’t matter much outside the potential for some players who like all types of content to get a little bit more reward each day. More power to ‘em, if they have the time and interest to go for the extras. It’d also allow those who really like dungeon-running more than other pursuits to get their dailies done in their favorite environment. It won’t hurt my PvE-centric preferences, it won’t hurt someone else’s PvP- or WvW-centric preferences. Instead, it would just make more players enjoy the time spent. Looks like a win-win, to me.

Why is Double Daily Fractal still happening?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

One easy solution to this dilemma is to simply reintroduce the Ascalonian Killer type dailies. Expand them out to be a bit more focused, such as Ghost Killer, Drake Killer, Inquest Killer, etc. Possibly add in Veteran-only variants similar to the old daily.

This sort of daily has/had the benefit of allowing players of all levels (as long as the mob types possible exist across level zones, which a huge number do), of going to whichever zones they favor (of those possible), which further helps disperse players so mobs of high-level players aren’t pushing aside all the low level players. Plus, it disperses players to different regions of the same maps, further reducing the friction.

This can add dozens of options back into the pool and will still get players motivated to move around the game world a bit to get to the mob types of the day. If some of these dailies double up, it wouldn’t be a big deal. Everyone likes murdering mobs.

As an aside, I’d advocate changing such dailies (as well as the existing Event dailies) so that any players with one or more max-level character cannot get credit for them (EDIT: with those high-level character(s)) in starter zones (maybe even including the second tier of 15-25, or so, zones). Those with higher level characters have loads of maps to choose from, those newer players without high-level characters don’t.

As to the actual question: once I figured out this wasn’t just another bug, I thought about it and consider it a good change. It was the plan all along to make all zones feel more or less like any zone while you’re at the appropriate “natural” level no matter what actual level you are. It also helps—a bit—to shunt the impact of inconsiderate self-centered L80s running around in low level zones during “event” dailies and murdering 100% of everything instantly while properly leveled characters are left swinging/shooting at corpses.

Kruhljak.2705

Supposedly the New Player Experience change was a result of a lot of research. I have no clue what kind of people they were researching. I realize the goal is to introduce people that have never played MMOs in a way that won’t overwhelm them, but they took the “baby with the bath water” approach and essentially crammed every new player (and worst of all, every new character) into the same tub rather than providing an OPTION (man, I really wish that was the go-to thing rather than the fallback after a failed attempt to railroad something) for players to use the tutorial hand-holding or not. All of it, not just some of it.

Not being in this bidness, I can only assume that this choice has more to do with recognizing the usual tendency of kittening and whining without first trying to figure out what’s going on. That is, if there were an option some complete n00bs would turn it off, get lost, and cry like infants that the game sucks ‘cause they have no idea what’s going on. This way they avoid that part, but incur the disdain of everyone who either a) comes in experienced enough to intuit mechanics sufficiently to manage without undue stress, or b) those that despite being totally new are patient and resourceful enough to learn as they go along despite setbacks due to initial ignorance.

Remember, though, your friend has a guide in you that many people may not have. You’re fast-forwarding him/her through much of the early part of the game so it’s hardly a surprise they’re not liking it since they’re forced by design to slog through the tutorial stuff they have no use for because of you.

All that aside, I’d be pretty annoyed (possibly enough to go elsewhere) if I were to come into a new MMO—even one with mechanics I’m entirely unfamiliar with—and have to go through this sort of process.

Unless I’m mistaken, ANet has mentioned they’re rethinking the NPE changes. What that means is anyone’s guess.

Look it up on Wiki? (rage)

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Kruhljak.2705

Kruhljak.2705

The best answer you can get is to look it up on the wiki if your questions are fact-based. Especially after you’ve asked more than a couple at a time.

As for not being familiar with the game’s terminology—the wiki deals with that quite well. It does have a search engine. A new player can find a ton more information just tracing the wiki from item to item (and the info is going to be more reliable and complete) than they’ll get from rattling off questions in chat.

But that’s more or less expected, as wikis aren’t some new animal. They exist for the very purpose of answering questions. The thing that irks me about your complaint is that you’re complaining at all. No player has an obligation to take time to answer anything you ask. That’s a courtesy. If someone bothers to direct you to the most comprehensive source of information—one I’d personally say you should expect to exist and unless you’re an internet neophyte, should be expected to check out by default—you should appreciate it rather than griping because you prefer being fed rather than feeding yourself.

One way to tell is to compare the buy order prices. The lowest—often much lower—value will indicate the one that’s not salvageable. Ostensibly, buy-to-salvage players (and, unfortunately, bots) know which is which and ignore the unsalvageable versions, thus creating a typically marked disparity in the two prices.

It’s a pretty reliable indicator, but of course, not an absolute guarantee.

Of course, it affects certain other sounds, but since this is most likely only an issue in commerce hubs, it shouldn’t matter much and can be adjusted as needed.

Now, I’ve been seeing this wooden Toy Golem (looks like a wooden toy soldier) thing popping up all over the place recently. That is ANNOYING! The constant click-buzz sound you can hear from a mile away chaps my hide. For anyone irritated by that atrocity, you can shut down the noise by using the Environmental slider.

I’ll still thumbs-up the idea of a mini sound slider as it would avoid affecting desired ambient and other sound effects which I generally do want to hear. A checkbox to include/exclude your own minis from the mini sound slider would be nifty.

“Not for laurels.”

A lot of folks don’t get that part because their only perspective is their own. They like or are at least ambivalent towards the task that yields the shiny. Everyone wants and can use laurels. Daily APs are less relevant as there’s an eventual wall for dailies (I don’t know if this event’s APs are included in the 15k cap or not, though).

The bottom line is that this is a PvP minigame set in a PvE environment. For those that like PvP it means more in-game money (through envelopes and laurel value) with absolutely no downside other than whatever annoyances DB may inherently have for everyone. For those that either don’t like PvP or don’t like these sorts of hyperactive mini-games and aren’t inclined to “game the game” by AFKing or otherwise screwing the intent, it’s a pain in the posterior and requires either giving up the benefits or grinding your teeth and doing the only thing ANet has seen fit to provide as a means to the end.

Everyone has a choice to do or not to do. The problem is that most, if not all, of the reason for doing anything in this and likely all MMOs is linked directly to the reward. In this case, the reward is universally attractive. The means to it isn’t. And it isn’t surprising that tying the entire event to a PvP-style minigame is going to divide the player base.

I’ve been just spawning in and hopping to the first ledge and letting others kill me. gets it over faster. this is just pointless. I have yet to win for the few times I tried, it’s just not worth it.

That’s toxic gameplay. You may as well just not participate. You’re ruining it for everyone else.

Perhaps it’s ANet that’s at fault here. Requiring one to play DB to get the event daily, as there is no other method, is their fault not a player’s. If a player hates that sort of game—for any reason at all, and there is not a single other option, I think they have every right to go in, stand there, die, feed the other team, and get out as soon as possible. If it screws over those that wish to play “legit” it means pretty much everyone is being screwed by ANet’s extremely narrow design of this event.

I would think the generally superb devs we have behind this game could have thought this through and come up with one—ONE—additional daily for the event to complete the set without DB being involved. But, it’s pretty clear—just as with forcing players to do WvW for map completion in an effort to get the big legendary shiny—they favor the angle of requirement rather than encouragement.

“You want to play DB? Great! There it is. You don’t? Well, ok, here’s a second option, but remember there’s some ‘cheeves and more reward boxes if you try out DB. Maybe you’ll like it!”

No. They go, “You want the event daily? Play DB. We made it. You must play it, or you can just forget that nice Laurel. Too bad for you, eh?”

Yes, that’s well over the top, I’m sure, but it kinda underscores the sense I feel sometimes with ANet’s methodology.

People angry over area map completition...

Since it’s abundantly clear ANet won’t detach WvW from map completion, maybe they could ruminate a bit on the idea of providing a PvE/non-PvP version of those maps selectable at entry. The maps already exist, so just turn off the WvW/PvP mechanics and systems and let people explore and do the PvE-style content that already exists the way they would in the open world areas, and be done with it. This eliminates the problems I see upthread for both sides. Well, other than the issue with WvW/PvP specialists not wanting to do any PvE-only content.

The problem even with this seemingly simple suggestion is that the reason for not detaching WvW from map completion remains: ANet feels it necessary to functionally force players to “experience” WvW whether they like it or not, since this whole legendary thing is kinda the cherry everyone’s expected to chase. I personally dislike that methodology. Encouragement to try out game types you’re not interested in is one thing, requirement is another.

Ho-Ho Tron the Obnoxious

Is this business with the Ho-Ho Tron mini’s incessant bell ringing intended or a bug? As it’s one of the most obnoxious things in the game along with gold spammers and chat morons—and I’m waffling on which is actually the most irritating. I can’t imagine how any dev could think this was a smart move.

Unless I’m completely hallucinating, I recall prior to one of the last few patches that this guy just rang his bell once in a while, which was fine. Now I feel like smashing it into the ground with my boot (and my hammer, my fist, my mace, any available boulder, etc.) every time I hear someone else’s nearby.

For me, the mini’s been ruined. I can’t stand having it out. Lots of gold wasted on bags (or maybe the TP, I forget) on a mini I now despise.

Theyr’e never going to fix it. It’s clearly a deeper problem with managing pathing and 3D geometry. Oh wait, ranger pets work just fine (in all but rare cases). It’s just everything else that’s screwed up. This applies to necro minions and summons of any kind (from eles, from rune effects, ogre pet whistles, everything). Well, summons from players. Stuff summoned by mobs works, probably because they’re just considered and treated as extra mobs which don’t require any additional code.

I’ve asked this before—to deaf ears, of course—but why do ranger pets work fine but nothing else does? It’s apparently a matter of pathing, so why isn’t everything else using the same pathing mechanism/code that ranger pets use? If all these bugged out minions/summons had the same pathing ability that ranger pets have 99% of the complaining about this crap would cease. Guaranteed.

But, as said, they’ll never fix it. If after 2 years—yes, this issue was around even in beta and reported by many, many players—they haven’t bothered with something so widespread in general use and fundamental to a build that they themselves included in the game with clear intent for people to use and enjoy, they will flat out never fix it. This is why they never bother to acknowledge what measures they’re taking against the problem. No plans to fix = no measures needed.

As much as I respect ANet as an entity and likewise the devs, in general who are pretty kitten good at their craft, this particular issue always makes me grind my teeth and makes me temporarily forget all the good stuff around the place. Bottom line: there is simply no excuse for not having corrected this in some fashion by now.

Would’ve been nice if they could’ve come up with a couple other little things to do for the daily (if not just for kicks) for those who don’t like DB-style minigames.
