Yes, how could have I completely forgotten about that given that I even created a thread weeks ago for it.

I believe it’s about time to revert a couple of simple nerfs that was the direct result of the PvP Celestial and might stacking meta. This won’t be game changing but should be “baseline” for the Elementalist.

• Blinding Ashes – Revert ICD to 5s. I honestly think this won’t be enough even if reverted as there’s a lot of pulsing AoEs now.
• Drake’s Breath – Revert burning Duration to 3s.
• Ring of Fire – Revert burn stacks when crossing the threshold to 3 stacks.
• Burning Fire – Using Cantrips grants 2 or 3 stacks of Might again

For other traits that got nerfed without relation to the celestial and might stacking meta:
• One with Fire – Activating a signet grants Fire Aura again
• Ride the Lightning – Revert CD to 20s.

Regarding GM Traits
I agree that there are no actual good offensive GM Traits in the Tempest trait line.

Base Ele might be better than Tempest for DPS builds in PvP?
I’ve thought about this a few times. The Tempest traitline offers so little for a DPS Tempest in PvP. Sure, the overloads are part of the powercreep but given that there are no amulets suitable for DPS Tempests to be forced to somewhat facetank a little while overloading, it might actually be better to not take it at all. Problem is, Scepter is still a joke with all the power hate currently in the game.

This is something I have proven correct (at least for me) in WvW solo roaming. I completely dropped Tempest trait line because I had little ways to take advantage of it. I usually didn’t have enough self-sustain after taking in a few hits after overloading in my non-bunker Tempest build. Funny to say, I had more success on DPS base Ele DD/Scepter than any DPS Tempest build I’ve used.

You might want to clarify your title. It would be more appropriate to say “Support Tempests are fine” instead because clearly, non-support Tempest/Elementalist builds are not fine. They just pidgeonholed the class more into support with the nerfs to base healing.

I believe that pre-nerf support Tempest was doing too well which is one of the main reasons it became mandatory in high-tier pvp. However, I think just removing Cleric Amulet would have been more than enough of a nerf because it already directly changes the playstyle of the specific build.

Here’s a secret to beating any rev ever: get anet to delete cleric ele so rev doesn’t have a leg to hump, play condi.

I literally rofled on this one.

But yeah, I’m surprised they haven’t reverted the nerf on PT or at least buffed it just a little bit. There’s not much you can do after using it. UA is extremely broken that you’d need to have an emote ready before using it. With healbot/cleansebot Tempests gone and condis still rampant, may Power Revs rest in peace.

Some stats and numbers for Elemental Bastion pre and post nerf.

Aquatic Benevolence – 15%
Sigil of Transference – 10%
Food – 10%
Healing Power – 1400

Outgoing Aura Heal pre-nerf: 2.3k~
Outgoing Aura Heal post-nerf: 1.8k~

That’s roughly a 500 healing nerf on the very same setup. And take note, that’s outgoing healing. You’ll roughly heal yourself for 900~ HP with 700~ healing power right now.

Elementalists have the lowest HP and Armor in the game. They don’t have access to stealth nor decent mobility as a form of damage mitigation. Their skills have minimum evade frames nor do they have access to decent blocks. Most damage mitigation traits relies on being hit and are exclusively locked into defensive trait lines.

One of their selling points is the amount of healing they can output. Pre-nerf, non-bunker Tempests were getting enough healing without putting in too much to Healing Power. It was just enough healing to sustain that 4 seconds of face-tanking damage while overloading.

IMHO an Elementalist’s base healing should be high because of the reasons stated above. With no access to stealth, minimal built in evades, long CD blocks, and minimal mobility, Elementalists will get hit and the only way to counter it is to heal through it. Now that they have nerfed base healing and turned it to healing scaling, Elementalists will be forced to put in more Healing Power and Toughness which then minimizes the available stats for offense. This in turn, just promotes bunker builds because non-bunker Elementalists has minimal ways of mitigating damage.

If Anet wanted to nerf support Tempest, they should have directly nerfed the outgoing healing instead their self-sustain. I’d rather have Aquatic Benevolence removed or changed as a major trait than force Tempests to play exclusively as a support class in PvP.

TL;DR – The main issues were not really addressed properly this patch. Outgoing Healing and Projectile hate should have been the focus of nerfs. Instead, they have pidgeonholed Tempests more into a bunker playstyle.

Note: This is not a Cleric Amulet/Bunker Tempest QQ. This concerns Anet’s initial design for the specialization and the current direction of the game

To any mod that thinks that this should be moved to Elementalist Subforum, please read this first because it’s generally aimed for PvP. It requires the opinions of non-ele players as well and posts moved to class subforums just die in general.

Tempest Specialization was created to support. This statement is supported by the Tempest specialization weapon which is a Warhorn, Tempest Traits and utilities, and Anet’s statements regarding Tempests pre-HoT (which can be found in their various streams in twitch).

The direction of the game is changing to something more fast paced, more action packed, and more exciting gameplay. I fully support that and I think it’s for the better of the game. However, Tempests were not created for this kind of playstyle because they were designed to prolong fights. With these changes in the direction of the game, I believe Tempests require an overall redesign.

First of all, let’s list all the facts that we know about Tempests:

• Tempests have a lot of damage mitigation skills and traits – True
• Tempests have a lot of healing abilities -True
• Tempests has a lot of skills which are PBAOE – True
• Tempests have good access to boons – True
• Tempests have good access to condition cleanse – True
• Tempests have a lot of weapon skills – True

Really looks good on paper, right? Now let me explain why these won’t work for non support Tempests in the current direction of the game.

Damage mitigation tools
Tempests has a plethora of access to damage mitigation using their traits, utilities, and weapon skills which is a must to compensate having the lowest base HP and Armor in the game.

• Outdated bruiser traits – Most of these traits require the Tempest to be hit. With the current amulets available and the direction of the game, people want to avoid soaking up damage at all. This effect is doubled on Tempests because of their bad base stats. These traits should be changed to something that promotes active play in defense instead of waiting to get hit.
• Outrageous Cooldowns – The active defenses of Tempests have very huge cool downs. Cantrips, Conjures (Earth Shield), and Arcane Shield are really good in paper but are outdated as well. Arcane Shield blocks 3 attacks but will easily get removed because a lot of skills now are unblockable, not to mention that there are lots of multi-hit skills.
• Outdated traits and weapon skills – Blind used to be a very good active damage mitigation effect. Scepter has good access to Blind along with Burning Ashes. However, most skills now are pulsing AoEs which completely counters blind.

Access to Healing skills
Tempests have abundant access to healing from traits, weapon skills, and utilities. Healing Power scales a lot better with Toughness than Vitality and all amulets with the Healing Power/Toughness combination was removed because most, if not all, bunker builds of all classes will definitely use it.

• Lots of heals, bad scaling – With the recent changes to Tempest Healing and its scaling, Anet is promoting Tempests to stat for healing power. However, there are no Toughness/Healing power combination amulets left in PvP. Having this kind of amulet promotes bunker builds but this is one of the core stats that Tempests need regardless of build following the recent changes.

Tempest AoEs and PBAoEs
Tempest is hands down one of the best classes with regards to having access to AoEs. My only gripe with this are Overloads and Scepter

• Overloads are PBAoE – Plain and simple. Overloading for DPS is suicide in the coming High Risk High Reward meta. It requires Tempests to be in harm’s way and you can’t dodge while overloading. Not to mention that it requires both waiting and channeling to get the full effects. It is exclusively designed for bruisers, not for casters.

• Scepter – I don’t even know where to start… Scepter needs huge buffs aside from Auto Attacks and Shatterstone.

Tempest, lord of the boons
Tempests, like the old Elementalists, have the best access to multiple boons. You can get Fury, Swiftness, Protection, Vigor, and Regen by just proccing an Aura if traited correctly. With the new Diviner Amulet, Fresh Air Eles can get permanent access to these boons.

• Boons won’t cover bad base stats – 40% damage reduction from protection means nothing if you have very low HP and Armor. You can still get condi-bombed or bursted even if you pair it with Scrapper runes. Heck, you may even get below 30% HP just by trying to stomp the Necro NPC in HoTM with protection in Diviner’s Amulet.

• Boon Rip, Boon Steal, and Boon Corrupt – Mesmers and Necros will probably still be rampant in the coming meta. Thieves are arguable. Permanent access to these boons means nothing to those classes.

Tempests and Condition Cleanse
Tempest, again, is top notch in this area. With the correct traits and runes, they were able to hold against the rampant condi spam meta for the past few seasons.

• Cleanses are exclusively locked to Defensive Traits; Water and Earth – There were no changes to conditions in general. Conditions will still be spammed to no end and locking access to cleanse in defensive traits promotes bunker playstyle which is the complete opposite of the upcoming meta. Some may argue that there are sigils and runes available for these but then again, the rate of condition application is too much for sigils and runes alone. Having the lowest vitality which is the main passive counter to conditions doesn’t help either.

4 Attunements, 20 weapon skills, and 4 overloads
Tempests along with Engineers have most access to different weapon skills. This is one of their core mechanics and one of the reason why Elementalists were touted as a high skill floor class prior to the discovery of bunker builds.

• Times have changed but cooldowns keep getting nerfed – Elementalists, like engineers, don’t get interrupted when changing attunements (kits for engineers). These weapon skills were designed to be chained to actually deal decent damage. But as we all know, 20 weapon skills are not enough to carry a class especially if the vital ones have high cooldowns.

Core Mechanics and Base stats
All classes have different core mechanics paired with their base stats. Comparing other light classes, Necros have 2nd HP bars while Mesmers have access to stealth, Invulnerability, and blocks.

Elementalists were given minimal mobility and evade frames, no access to stealth, and High CD invulnerability and block skills/utilities to pair with its lowest HP and Armor, but has abundant access to healing. Their design was downright reliant on Healing which then causes a domino effect to taking more Toughness. As stated earlier, these 2 stats are core stats for any Tempest build following the recent nerfs to Tempest Healing scaling but these stats also promotes bunker playstyle on any other class.

TL;DR
I am not asking for Cleric/Celestial Amulet to be returned. I just want a decent non-bunker competitive-tier viable DPS build for Tempests to go along with the upcoming High-risk high-reward meta. We will certainly see people use Magi Amulets but there are many players who are sick of being healbots. Tempests should not be locked to a single viable boring healbot build.

Very very TL;DR
Tempests were designed to prolong fights and this isn’t the direction Anet is going for PvP.

For those who really love or loved the game, we need your opinions on how you think Tempests should be designed for the current direction of the game.

It was Anet’s fault for introducing a specialization that focuses on support. Now that the direction of the game has changed (imo for the better), Tempests are left out. Might as well just delete it and create a new specialization that does not focus on supporting.

As I have always claimed, I like how the direction of the game is going but I don’t like how they nerfed Tempest Self-Healing which affected non support builds more than the specific support build that needed to be nerfed. Removing Celestial and Cleric Amulet is fine but further reducing the self sustain capabilities of Tempest is an overkill. It’s like telling a healer specialization to not play healer but their skills are still focused on healing.

Tried this as well. Perma 40% damage reduction from Protection won’t help you at all with low armor and HP. With no healing power, perma regen means nothing. You may even get below 30% when trying to stomp the NPC Necro rofl

My issue with this is more of why they only gave a new viable build to mesmers while disregarding others.

You can say that I’m a bit biased because I’m obviously an Ele main who’s sick of the support meta and I’ve been dying to see a viable zerk build for eles.

But what do I see? Non-bunker Ele builds got nerfed harder than meta tempests (base healing of traits and heal, now we need healing power even more) with no buffs/possibility fo an alternate DPS build. Why did viable mesmers got buffs for a new viable build while Eles were to die left on a sinking ship?

Learn how to play glass in a bunker meta and stop QQing. As a thief I can give you some suggestions.

Maybe it would work if if Eles had stealth or mobility like thieves have.. lol.

IF eles had better CDs on active mitigation it would work. But hey, I’d love a viable glass build that would melt if I actually screw up but the current mitagation eles have are not good enough to play on low hp and armor.

Well nothing was really balanced at all. No changes to passive defenses and no changes to the powercreep. They broke 2 classes, Tempests (in a bad way) and Chrono (in a good way).

They didn’t address the real issue at all which is the amount of passives and some condi application rate of specific meta builds.

Well, not really, but title will annoy lots of people and that is fun.
Feels like ele deals more damage, but have less sustain while dealing damage.

Didn’t try ele myself. “Feels like”…. I just love when Anet listens to their forums.

Especially when it’s a player with 6 months experience who doesn’t even know what the class’ mechanics are and demands nerfs because he’s too lazy to learn about its rotations.

Eles won’t even be dealing damage because non-bunker builds will drop like flies now that their baseline heals were nerfed and are now even more useless to builds without healing power.

It got nerfed in PVE (CD reductions) and more nerf to baseline Tempest (Wash Away the Pain).

They nerfed what non-meta Tempests use instead of nerfing what meta tempests use. If they wanted to nerf meta tempests, they should have nerfed outgoing healing instead of nerfing anything related to self-sustain. Ele/Tempests are kitten without healing power and they’re making it worse. Please stop pidgeonholing us to bunker builds.

How does Anet take fairweathers into account? PVE fairweathers and Gift of Battle farmers are swarming WvW, even to the point of covering off hours just to PvD. I’m pretty sure they’ll be gone when they actually get proper retaliation from other servers.

I’m actually quite nervous that Anet would go full kitten and actually nerf Ele self sustain like how those noobs suggested in PvP subforum.

If they’re gonna nerf anything, it should be aquatic benevolence. Non-bunker Eles barely hold their ground already and further nerf to self sustain is too big of a hit.

I agree that there are lots of other skills that need more help than Lightning flash, but I too think it should have -something-. Whether that something is a stun break, 1200 range or a slightly lower cd (30s-ish). Maybe I’m just jealous of Blink and think the damage component of LF is near-negligible.

As far as “reposition vertically” How exactly does that work? I find I get hit with the inability to teleport on hilly terrain regardless of which I use. Is there something about LF that lets it bypass it better than others in some locations?

The damage is actually pretty decent on a zerk-ish build wherein it was meant to be used as an addition to a combo… but yeah, the meta has always forced us to play bunkerish wherein the damage is pretty negligible.

+1 on LF changes.

Yes, because if tempest/druid camps i point, no one should ever try to decap it. Just turn around and walk away.

Would you defend necro if it had unlimited endless life force on demand?

1. Why 1v1 a build fully specced to heal? Let him be useless to his team camping a node that you can easily retake with someone else later or just get a DPS spec teammate to +1.
2. You are suggesting a nerf to the class, not the meta build. Do you even know how much they heal without healing power? So what about these none meta builds that don’t stack healing? You’re basically asking for the class to be removed.
3. Nobody would play DPS Ele if it melts to anything. It does not have mobility nor stealth to compensate for bad sustain if you don’t get healing power. Without sustain buffs to Fire/Air and with Celestial gone you won’t be seeing anything similar to celestial Fire/Water eles.
4. If anything was to be nerfed on tempests, it would be the projectile hate. Some are already expecting a well deserved duration/AoE nerf on swirling winds. Outgoing healing can be nerfed but self sustain should never be nerfed if they won’t buff sustain from other sources.
5. Why decrease shatter damage? If anything were to be nerfed, it would be the confu/torment stacks and boonshare (WvW)
6. What are you trying to do with mace primal burst? I know it’s too strong but the number of condis and rate of application is the problem. Replace other condis with more bleed so it can be easily cleansed? Just reduce the stacks and probably the rate of application.

What the heck are you talking about. Ele has the highest DPS in game, not just by far but, by way too much. Ele actually NEEDS a nerfing to bring it inline.

Would be more than happy to trade a DPS trait in fire/air for some self sustain

You actually just killed Elementalists and mesmers of all builds, not just the meta. Why don’t you ask anet to delete them?

Tempests doesn’t lack damage. What they lack is sustain outside of Water/Earth. There’s a reason why celestial Fire/Water/Arcana became a thing. Buffing their DPS Traits for more DPS means nothing when they instantly melt from AoEs.

Does DH need buffs? Not really. Just nerf Projectile Hate which is one of the main reasons we don’t see DH in higher tiers of PvP. Base Guardian traits and skills needs a lot of love though.

As for DH sustain… I somehow agree that it’s too much but not to the level of Warrior Sustain. Warriors get great sustain and DH gets decent sustain, both without even getting Healing Power. Compare that to a Tempest wherein they need to put all stats and trait into Healing to make it good. I seriously don’t know why people QQ more than necessary about it when it’s exclusively spec’d to heal.

It was actually really good pre-HoT. But given how good auras are when you get full traits for them, I agree that this has been pretty much standard.

If it’s something that gives more vitality, it will be a GM trait to make it in line with Guardians. I’d prefer something that applies chill offensively and increases chill duration.

Sounds like a T1 problem, you don’t really see this in T2 as far as I’ve seen. Hell, I don’t think I’ve ever seen boon sharing mesmers in T2, all I see is the horde of necromancers, eles, and guardians.

Getting CCed in mist form is different though… I know I get CCed in vapor form but I haven’t used mist form for a while now

One guy can’t chase or deal the finishing blow because he plays a low mobility sustain bunker/bruiser so he’s made up his mindset that he wins if the enemy runs.

Then the other guy’s playstyle and build has enough DPS so he considers letting enemies get away as a “not win” situation.

It’s not like Anet made any set of rules to determine what’s a win and what’s a lose in roaming. No point in making opinions facts.

My opinion is that the best class would be something in the middle, something that can both kill and run regardless of the build and only necros and DH can’t do both.

why nerf tempest? Its not even super strong. It´s support. The only reason to nerf it would be the decision GW2 don´t wan´t strong support roles that decide teamfights. It´s a holy trinity or not question. Ele needs some buffs that don´t buff sustain. So things that compete to bunker build traits like tempestious aria or unused fire traits…

Apparently a lot of people in PvP don’t share those views and has been bombarding PvP section with QQs and nerf suggestions that hurts non-support builds more than support builds. And as we all know, Anet has always been lenient (except for the past few balance patches) to those QQers and drops nerf hammers left and right.

I’m still salty as to why that stupid mod moved good a thread that discuss how underpowered non-bunker builds are while letting that stupid “Why is it ok for eles to be unkillable” QQ thread stay in PvP section.

To be fair, it wasn’t a mistake on their part for these specific nerfs (except RoTL and probably BA).

Celestial Ele with 20~25 might stacks was very strong pre-nerf.

I actually weren’t referring to old d/d ele nerf as mistakes. I was talking about so many other nerfs before that to other classes too, that were just plain in the wrong direction.

Point taken. But they actually reverted the nerf to Signet of Restoration (PvP) which wasn’t game breaking or anything. I mean if they won’t settle for buffing non-bunker traits anytime soon, I’d settle for these now while waiting. I think everyone’s expecting nerfs to bunker tempest (or tempest in general) for the next balance patch. At least these skills are still usable WvW where D/D is still viable at small scale roaming.

People roam to find fights, not run away from it. You don’t fix a problem by turning a blind eye to it.

Both power and condi are out of hand but condi builds gets the upperhand in roaming and small scale fights. Just tone down everything and start looking from there.

To be fair, it wasn’t a mistake on their part for these specific nerfs (except RoTL and probably BA).

Celestial Ele with 20~25 might stacks was very strong pre-nerf.

Guild Armor Skins

A couple of concerns regarding Guild Armor skins.

1. They look bad for the most part. – I know it can’t be helped for the chest piece because they need to make it flat to avoid too much clipping on the guild emblem. But what’s the reasoning for other pieces to be ugly as well?
2. Guild Ornate Skins – Now, some of these sets look good mostly on Males. But I find them too bulky for Light weight class and most of them don’t look good on females.
3. Why would we need to PvE for them? – I’m specifically talking about Guild Ornate skins. The ones who would want to represent their guilds with pride are mostly PvP and WvW players. Why would we want to spend countless hours doing DS meta for the tokens?
4. Capes and back items – It’s been more than 3 years and we still have not fixed the issue for cape clipping on Charrs? It’s sad that because 1 race have clipping issues, all other races don’t get to have it
5. Customization – GW1 capes have really good customization. Any guild related skin looks so bland right now.

I believe it’s about time to revert a couple of simple nerfs that was the direct result of the PvP Celestial and might stacking meta. This won’t be game changing but should be “baseline” for the Elementalist.

• Blinding Ashes – Revert ICD to 5s. I honestly think this won’t be enough even if reverted as there’s a lot of pulsing AoEs now.
• Drake’s Breath – Revert burning Duration to 3s.
• Ring of Fire – Revert burn stacks when crossing the threshold to 3 stacks.
• Burning Fire – Using Cantrips grants 2 or 3 stacks of Might again

For other traits that got nerfed without relation to the celestial and might stacking meta:
• One with Fire – Activating a signet grants Fire Aura again
• Ride the Lightning – Revert CD to 20s.

I didn’t say it was “bad”. I did say it was “Meh” because you can probably only play healbot in higher tiers which will probably get nerfed by the next balance patch unless Karl decides to show his mercy on it again.

Healbot Tempest is good but Elementalist’s current state in PvP wherein it only has 1 build that will soon be nerfed is bad.

Anything works in PvE. Raids are about maximizing DPS. For PvP we only have healbot as the only legit build in high tiers. We’re pretty much expecting general nerfs that will hurt the class more than it will hurt the specific build and we’re kind of not expecting any consolation buffs on other traits because that’s how Anet has always been. Oh wait, we’ll probably get another buff on shatterstone.

TL;DR:
PVE – Good
WvW – Always been good (staff ele never gets out of meta)
PvP – Meh.

• Revert Stab changes
• Revert CC hit count changes
• Nerf Mesmer Boon Sharing. Make it so that only specific boons can be shared. Stability, Resistance, and Quickness should not be shared.

Anet already did this to Tempest Warhorn which made it crap-tier from decent. They could have just removed those 3 boons from the share-list but instead they thought it should only share might and fury. Why can’t they do it to Mesmer?

Wrong. They can still buff DPS Eles by giving them self-sustain outside of Water/Earth. And yes, Scepter won’t be doing any 100-0 anytime soon as long as there are so many passives lying around.

Ele is the same, we so much passive defenses that synergize so well with our Water/Tempest traits. I experienced it many times wherein I would wait for an enemy condi burst and use Cleansing Fire but a split second after that condi burst, my passives already saved the crap out of me which resulted into wasting Cleansing Fire as I was not quick enough to react nor was expecting those passives to proc.

And I believe access to Protection is mandatory for Eles given that we have the lowest base HP and Armor in the game. IMO if access to boons were core mechanics for Ele, meaning we don’t have to trait for them (of course nerfs to other traits are a given), we can start looking at other traits. Oh please just give us an active sustain like conditional Life Steal (e.g life steal on burning enemies)

I think it just depends on what weapon set you use and what game mode you play. I think it’s already kind of mandatory to take Earth whenever you are playing x/F Tempest but I still stick to Arcana because I play DD Tempest (WvW of course) which rarely overloads anything aside from Air.

And I think it’s just a matter of how you want to get Protection, be it through Attunement Swap or Auras. Arcane will be always superior in that regards but it does not synergize well with Overloads. Let’s face it, the current Elementalist/Tempest is nothing without constant access to Protection.

Well I think condi bunker is a result of the powercreep. Everything is AoE spam so people want to be tanky. Condi DPS is good against everything. You can be tanky while dealing great damage and AoE spam so it’s 3 birds with one stone.

Remove Boonshare, It's gonna break WvW

Anet removed boonshare on Tempest Warhorn which was one of its selling point. Why don’t they just do the same for boon sharing related skills for mesmers? Only specific boons can be shared.

Or better yet, don’t give resistance boon properties. Give it a fixed duration. I know it can be stripped right now but it’s not as easy at it seems to strip a whole guild when they have like perma 8+ boons them.

Try stripping a map bob with them. How well you think that is going to work? LOL. Every map blob needs to boon it up and run over any dev in WvW so they will nerf it. Condis need work as well, but unless they do something about this, you are not even fighting, it just makes you invincible Mario plowing through everyone.

What are you talking about? I’m saying that boonshare specific skills should work like Heat Sync wherein specific boons can only be shared.

Or remove boon properties from quickness and resistance so they are not affected by boon duration and cannot be shared.

Rather than buff more defenses, I think everything offensive needs to get toned down along with all passive defenses and that is for both power and condi builds.
