Why play anything besides guardian?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lafiel.9372

You obviously don’t go around carrying pugs all the time because if you did, you would realise that playing as a zerk build guardian is not capable of doing that. When defensive guardians play, they play to ensure that other party members survive. Even, in the worst case scenario where the party fails, you can still solo the boss yourself easily.

It definitely is possible to carry the worst pugs with berserker guardian. I’m sure I did that even in Arah.

By the way, when I think defensive, i’m talking about knights gear, which basically sacrifices the crit % for some toughness.

Knights doesnt sacrifce crit damage for toughness but power for toughness and crit damage for power.

Your definition of carry isn’t able to support other players the same one a tougher guardian can. For example, you can’t soak a decent amount of damage to keep a player from dying in a down state.

Also, I don’t know if any of you realise, a lot of the mobs basic ai actually naturally targets high toughness players, even bosses have a natural tendency for target high toughness players in certain phases or (the whole phase) e.g. Lupi. Just by wearing the gear, you’re saving your party members skin unknowingly already.

Some people may define carrying as being the sole survivor, I define carrying as being a player which brings the ability of the party as a whole higher by giving the right supports at the right time while doing good dps.

Last bit:
I’m talking about it in general as a stat (yes you get more toughness because it becomes the primary in knights gear).

He has 16k health because he can’t play very well and has to use defensive gear to compensate for his inability to dodge.

Lol. I like how this guy immediately associates a bad player with defensive gear but i’ll forgive him since he has no idea who i am.

I’ll even throw in a hint why theory doesn’t align with practice sometimes.

Mob hp and burst damage.

Guardians do have good sustained damage but their initial burst if you factor in the chain potential of certain “other” classes make their damage not as par in the initial 10 seconds of a fight, which is usually how long it takes to kill the casual off the batch boss type mob that doesn’t have good mechanics with a cohesive group.

You know what, i’m going to throw you another bone here so you can learn a thing or two. To say that a guardian with defensive gear (I don’t know what you classify as defensive tbh, anything that’s not zerker, yeah, you’re probably one of those lol) is kinda silly.

By the way, when I think defensive, i’m talking about knights gear, which basically sacrifices the crit % for some toughness.

Also, just some homework. It’s very possible to get about 16k hp with a zerker build/gear <I think it’s about 15k-16k, it’s been awhile>

Guardians are good but they’re not always wanted. In terms of damage spikes and low hp, I find very few besides warrior or necro have a higher hp pool than them. Even then, none of those two classes have the capability guardian does to keep their hp at 80 % and above most of the time. Also16k is enough to absorb most spikes imo

Imagine a completely new person walking their way into Orr. Imagine the rage that would be generated by the said person on the forums. Levels serve their purpose as a tutorial with increasing difficulty.

First comment pretty much got it right. A well designed game doesn’t make the levels feel like levels, it’s more of a tutorial and when designed right, won’t even feel like one but by the end of it, you’ll be smarter, stronger and better player than when you first came in. Take FFXIV for example, their leveling progress is filled with interesting tutorials, ranging from interesting story quest, guildhest which are like short dungeons to teach you about mechanics of your class and bosses you will face, wide variety of lower level dungeons with many different things. Most players, if they did them in the correct order and paid attention, come out as pretty decent players by the end of it.

Of course, tutorial and progression doesn’t have to be level base, a good example is portal but that isn’t a mmorpg and having levels is just a solid way for mmos to categorize things. I however, don’t really believe in character level cap progression though (not the same as gear progression).

If you hold onto it long enough, with the huge fluctuations in the economy due to Anet constant content updates, you’ll hit jackpot soon.

However, in terms of gold earnt for those legendaries, it’s a bit of everything. I admit I did had to farm part of it, but for the most part, I just played the game and casual tping back in the days.

No one knows how hard they really work on content and usually people focus on certain aspects which have been left unfixed for months to back their frustration so you can understand from their point of view, their logic is correct. It’s when you use actual verbal abuse, like swearing at them directly which triggers alarms.

Wildstar has a lot going for it and I will probably check it out myselkittenda nice that its scifi and the humor seems awesome.

But seriously I am confused how people annoyed with Gw2 for introducing a single tier with a promise that others arent going to be introduced for years to come if ever would think thats unacceptable and say they’re switching over to a game that has a gear treadmill part of its core design.

Cause Carbine are being upfront about their intentions. Cause BiS equipment in Wowish games is actually easier to obtain than ascended items in GW2. Cause the game design is driven by endgame content.

And here is the big question, why is BiS equipment in Wowish games easier to obtain than ascended items in Gw2?

I believe it’s because of the reward system that Anet implemented. No mob tagging/stealing, no need/greed rolls in parties, very few restrictions to loot drops (other than the obvious RNG and some fine/rare materials), which means even a lowly dredge in Fotm can drop a Dusk or any other precursor…

This creates a solo player-friendly system, a casual friendly system, there is no extra drama over loot distribution (like what the often used DKP systems in some Raiding guilds are causing). In the end though, to compensate with the easy/friendly/casual loot system they had to add an offensive RNG system with extremely low chances of getting anything of some worth. A system that is also punishing really organised guilds groups or simply groups of friends playing together (for example, why can’t we “trade” Fractal Skins/Rings between us while we are still in the party? -party bound gear can easily solve this)

And then we have encounters like the revamped Tequatl. I’m sure, judging by the difficulty of the encounter, everyone would love to have some Ascended or at least Exotic quality rewards for beating him, however since so many players can fight him at once it would be an “overkill” to give superb drops to everyone all the time. In other MMORPGs raid bosses drop a fixed amount of superb raid quality gear (or tokens to get it), then it’s up to the team to either roll, or offer a more complex system to decide who will get the item, this allows the encounter to be both rewarding (for the team as a whole) but also requires the players to do the encounter numerous times so everyone is geared up. With the free-for-all loot of Guild Wars 2 we don’t have any of this, just pure luck…

Thing is, since they’re account bound, it really shouldn’t matter but yeah, Anet doesn’t like giving out freebies.

If I remember right, one of the designers basically said they felt they were above this rule and they intended for players learn through death.

Learning through death =/= punishing content.

It’s when the player can’t do anything about the mechanic (whether it’s down to being unavoidable or untelegraphed) is when it makes it punishing.

Challenging content makes you think ‘what can I do different?’ when you die.

Learning through death IS punishing because you have no idea that that kills you until you’re hit by it. A game which is designed properly should be able to teach you the mechanics without having you to learn through dying.

I suggest you watch extracredits video again lol.

Learning through death isn’t necessarily punishing content.

If you die, the learning process after doesn’t necessarily mean the content is punishing.

It’s when you absolutely have to die in order to memorise and learn the fight because there’s no indication of what’s coming is when learning through death is punishing.

However, if you die through a mistake on your part and the mechanic was made clear, then you can learn what mistake you made, or you can think of a different approach. This is when learning through death isn’t punishing.

For example:

  • The pull / spin on Kholer. You don’t necessarily have to die in order to learn that mechanic, since there’s a tell that shows something big is coming (the glowy sword). However, if you do die to that mechanic, you can re-examine what you need to do next (keep some Endurance in reserve, bring some stability, pop some form of projectile reflection ect) since you know what killed you (you got pulled in). All in all, with Kholer, I’d say the particle effects flying around make the fight more punishing than it really is, since it tends to mask the tell.

I am referring to one hit ko mechanics.
I thought learning through death was a stand alone enough statement but you guys are misinterpreting it. If I meant learning through death as any time you die then that would just be silly. i’m talking about things that kill you in one hit and you have no idea until it happens. There is a lot of examples of that during the gauntlet.

Just to further explain. One hit ko mechanics isn’t 100 % wrong but the problem is you hae to at least give the chance to educate the player that this beam will KILL you in one hit if you get hit.

For example, let’s say i go in a boss, the first and there is a beaminig light you have the avoid. The first time it hits you it may do half your hp damage, then a npc will explain, oh no, they upped the power on that beam! be sure to avoid it or it’ll be instant death!".

That way players are now informed of the mechanic and will dodge them and know they will die if they touch it.

Another example,

There is bee mobs that will cast a spell that will one hit you if you don’t kill them quickly. Before you engage them in a boss fight, you were shown several of these bees a long with trash mobs. So now I go into a boss fight and he summons these, I now know that I have to kill them first or they will one shot me.

Now let me give examples of how anet does things above.

Boss starts off with a giant beam of light. Players, being first timers, were not sure if this beam of light protects us or kill us. This light is blue (if it was red then it MAY give an indication that it’s dangerous) so the players decide to hop on it and then their party wipes. Thank you anet! by wiping us during this fight, you have taught us a valuable game mechanic!

same situation, giant bee boss summons little bees in the fight. Party members have never encountered these mobs outside. There is only two and they do not do much damage so most of the players stay focus on the boss while aoeing the bees here and there. Suddenly, little bees use their special move and bam, 2 players are dead. the 3 players have trouble now fighting the boss, party eventually wipes. Thank you again anet! we have once again learned a valuable game mechanic through dying!

See what i’m saying? It’s all about the delivery of the mechanics to be honest and Anet sucks at delivering a lot of things, story, content, bug fixes or game mechanics.

EDIT: I am not actually surprised because I know that somewhere in their stack of papers there is something that convinces them that their game is perfect.

It is easier to add new stuff then it is to fine tune or should I say, fix, existing content/bugs. That is the mindset of anet, add enough new things and people who care about the old things will get muffled away in the noise.

Lafiel.9372

I’ve become spoiled.

I tried to play WoW last month. I couldn’t stomach it. 5.2 content has been out since early March. Only thing that has changed was crappy ‘heroic’ scenarios that are kitten easy, and some daily quests in the Barrens.

GW2 has released 13 updates since then, compared to WoW’s 1 since March (had to look it up). Sure I may not be interested in everything that GW2 releases, but it’s still peaks my interest enough to log on an check everything out.

Oh, also I was a huge PvP-er in WoW. I tried queueing for a BG recently. After 9 minutes in queue, i just Alt+f4-ed. The game is no longer worth 15 dollars/month to me.

First off, I’m confused how you couldn’t stomach a few barrens quests or a bg queue (which btw will never take 9 mins if you are lvl 90.) but you can easily handle all the garbage LS content? Spam F 200 times? Do you not remember anything ANet has released? At least 10 x worse than WoW quests, and btw Blizz just let out a ton of new raid content and a new zone that will last a billion times longer than some temporary garbage in GW2.

WoW has already copied or already had every single GW2 feature(lol) so they aren’t unique anymore. Blizz is smart, they aren’t afraid to take a good idea and implement it. ANet on the other hand…. enjoy your zergzergzerg ‘living story’ more like living grind.

This game is terrible right now and it’s sad because it has the most potential out of any MMO out there.

you mean you can still do normal quests? not too long ago i went and tried Tera, all those lame kitten quest drove me away in less than an hour.

“LS garbage” looks like you dont like LS, for me it is fun and convenient

WoW can indeed copy as many features as they want, but at its core is still an old classic MMO, is that bad? not really, I know people that still love the classic style and can’t stand GW2’s style.

“this game is terrible” more like “I dont like this game and I shouldn’t be here”

This is either your honest opinion or you’re not looking at these objectively.

I would personally rather do old fashion quests over having to do any more hearts and boring DE’s to level my alt right now.

They’re really not that different, don’t pretend it’s that much better than old fashion quests… WoW quests especially have a ton of fun gimmicks and variety where as every Event is just : kill this same wave of generic mobs with the same 5 abilities over and over lol.

I’m sick of one, and haven’t had the other in a long time, so of course I’d rather pick WoW quests over this ATM, but that’s just because variety is good.

False. There’s a reasonable variety in DEs. There’s some where you collect objects, some where you kill things, some where you don’t kill things but rather, destroy an object. And if you go to WvW there’s quite a bit of variety there.

You know what’s a good idea? Have both!

From my personal perspective, I tried a few other mmos with little to no luck of retaining me. GW2 was still a better game to me despite its flaws. However, once I played ffxiv, I never looked back. There are so many things the game did RIGHT this time and some more minor things it didn’t but can be overlooked.

For example, the crafting system in ffxiv is amazing. It’s so amazing that there are people who want to play as pure crafter only. In fact, it’s most amazing point is it’s actually profitable to craft! making it a viable option to actually play as a “class”.

What it didn’t do as good is the trading post system or the banking system. GW2 is superior in these two aspects. The TP was extremely well designed and the bank was very very user friendly.

What didn’t gw2 get right? The story for one was very poorly presented. The story in itself if you paid super close attention may actually be somewhat appealing but the way it was DELIVERED was very very poor.

Trying to please everyone, another problem I think gw2 did not get right. Trying to please players from two different genres is just not right. To be honest, I never really care if a game is going to have grind or it’s going to introduce new tiers every few months. What I care about is what a game told me they’ll be and I go in and then they change everything they said they would be. I have no issue with playing trinity or not or having gear grind because I knowingly started playing knowing that. I only get annoyed if i’m 3 months in and then you say we’re changing everything completely.

LFG tool – I said this before and i’ll say it again. How can a game like gw2, in the 2012, not start off with an LFG tool. This was definitely an oversight on Anet’s part and it took them 1 year to fix it. As I said before, gw2lfg really saved anet many customers from huge outcries of frustration else we’ll still be spamming chats in LA for hours for a group in arah p4 in our low population server.

Coming back to the question of the OP, have we become spoiled?

Yes and no. Are you spoiled now that you have clean water running out of every tap in your house instead of having to hike a mile to the closest well. Are you spoiled that your mum drives you to school instead of having to walk there? Is it “normal” or “entitled” or “spoiled” to expect clean running water to flow out of your taps or products to be not expired in the supermarket?

As mmorpgs grow, there is a certain level of expectation that comes with a game, this is natural and us consumers have every right to compare cross-game feature to another. If a game wants to compete on fair grounds with another and future upcoming games, they will have to be able to offer the same or better features as others given that this feature is within their manifesto.

At the end of the day, change doesn’t come if you suck it up and stay quiet while enduring something which you may have believed should have been done differently. Despite the negative feedback on negative feedback (lol), it is feedback (ideally constructive) that brings about change.

I think the best aspect o the game is… if you’re good it really shows. You can solo a boss when your other 4 party members are dead. I’ve had many times when afterwards, people were very thankful I was there to carry them and I was happy to. I try my best to keep everyone alive but sometimes it’s just not possible and you gotta finish it off yourself. Most other games, this isn’t as possible, especially in trinity based systems since a core teamwork is required. Here and there we still get to shine for example, an off tank summon pet or melee dps off tank when a main tank dies or a healer dies and the dps goes into support.

As a bit of advices look at the ppl who are posting negative things about this game past post you will find that they ONLY post negative things that what these forums are used for and nothing but.
Any way GW2 is not WoW so it will take time to get use to GW2 agen you must be active and not sit there and hit the same buttons in a set way over and over. To get the fullness of GW2 you need a guild you need an active guild who talks. If you just go though this game completing every thing with out talking and making friends your lost and far better off playing a single player game.
The nice thing in GW2 there is a lot of easy in being to play with whom you want and doing what event. You can make a pt of any class comp you can run with lower level often you can run with ppl who have better or wost gear and not be for the worst off because of it. If you got to be the best gear every GW2 is not for you. I think this may be your biggest leap from WoW to GW2.

Ahaha nice joke. In WoW doing damage involves usual rotation (4-6 buttons) and random procs that require you to adjust.

In gw2 you stay in place and watch the auto attack animation while drinking coffe.

SOOO ACTIVE.

Try doing more than champion and karma trains doing that.

To be fair, I pay less attention in gw2 then playing any other game, especially when i’m in dungeon. Generally because I only have to rely on myself to survive instead of other players. And yes this is all content and there is nothing to back this up but I am pretty good.

Where is everyone

You’re 100% right. It is a problem for all MMOs, even the biggest most successful ones. Many of the mid level zones in WoW are empty, on a lot of the servers. Why? Because there’s very little reason for people to be there.

Exactly, and you know what WoW did? They found a solution to the problem. With CRZ then Connected Realms. After Connected Realms you can go to any zone at any level and see players because they basically “Merged Servers” and gave a pretty name to it.

ESO is going to do the same thing and will have a solution before launch.

GW2 and other MMOs need to do the same thing. Because WoW realized there is a reason they lost almost half their subscribers. And they fixed that problem. Putting it under a rug doesn’t make it go away.

ANet has the tech to do it, we see it with their guesting feature. They just need to enact it.

All these suggestions are just basically the same suggestion people requested ages ago but got turned down. An underflow.

I hope to see a level cap increase with all current items invalidated just to see how far Anet is willing to go to ruin their game

Times like these I wish I could thumbs down posts.

It’s not a matter of thumbing down, it’s a matter of when anet will do it because they already stated they WILL do it.

Living story = players not returning?

I have different conversations with friends.

What’s new in the game. The living story. This week we’re fighting T’quatl. It’s a pretty epic dragon battle. Next week, there’s a new dungeon path coming into the game.

It’s not about what’s gone, it’s about what’s coming. You’re always two weeks away from something new…and you never know what it’s going to be.

To me that’s a selling point.

Lol there is no depth in this conversation at all. At least add a reply of some sort.

1.) Tough luck. Guesting gives more benefits than drawbacks.
2.) Tough luck again. I’d rather have someone get in and contribute rather than waste a spot for you to relog
3.) Learn to play your class and stop being bad. There is a reason for insta-kill mechanics, and if you fail to learn you will keep dying until you acknowledge it’s presence
4.) You go to Dulfy, use her guide and then complain about it’s presence? The heck is this? You don’t like it, don’t use it.
5.) No one is forcing you to play, get real
6.) If you don’t want to get the points related to the achievement then you don’t deserve it. It’s not mandatory.
7.) Too bad

r u the guy who is looting precursers over and over? there had been one with the same name….
found it "For the record, I’ve got all my precursors from mobs/chests

I’ve spent over 700g on the forge, got zero

It’s just luck"

do u think your gaming experience is the same? there r hundreads of ppl who played the same amount than u r but never got any precurser or something that is worth more than 10g.
u r a fanboy because u have always been lucky…. there is a big difference. there r ppl who get punished by rng over and over. same for me. played 2500 hours and the best loot was a weapon worth 7g.

do u think a rich person can understand the situation of a poor person? no way! the elite who is ruling this world seperated themselfs from the normal people….. they have no idea what normal ppl r talking about…..

im sure most ppl wont get it =) it is just a game…. how can u comapre these 2 things…. its different but the same….. your reality is how everything around u treats u.

2 persons salvaging 10 rares every day. 1 person gets 2 ectos out of 10. the other one gets 20 out of 10. do u think their gaming experience is the same?

talking to a person like u doenst make sense at all. u must be a fanboy or something.

my friendlist doenst even exist anymore because everyone left this game for the same reasons.
there is more than 1 opinion.
i agree 100% with everything except number 2. im not suffering that many disconnects.
and i dont agree on any of your points.
who is right and who is wrong?

1) please tell why overflows r good?
2) r u really such an….. ??
3) serious? the scalling is just horrible. there is more than 1 champ that pretty much instakills u. and it happened at teq too…. u cant see red circles due to horrible effects u cant switch off…..
4) i like playing and not searching. i dont like the hole living story thing and im only doing it for avs….. there is anyway nothing else to do. no new content since release….
5) they r forcing u. its not that they say it…. watch this video to understand their intention of every aspect of the game.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_duqqVHTGRA&feature=youtu.be&t=21m10s its called psychology….. not so easy to explain whats the problem with that. its complex to understand the idea behind it. it is a way to force ppl doing stuff.
6) is there any content that ppl could play except grinding avs? content is lacking…. there is nothing else to do…..
7) its how we get fooled…..

u dont seem to be very…..

Lol I like that youtube video because the last guy basically describes 80 % of what Anet does with their content.

How does ffxiv handle these problems or heck, most other games. Everyone gets their own DoT. Does the server lag? No it doesn’t, are there more players? Yes.

Devs Testing Content Before Release ?

I feel a lot of people that think pre-testing is useless is kinda like saying, it’s useless to have clinical trials on newly developed medicine, we should just put the medicine out into the public and see how it does with real people then iron and fix out the bugs from that information.

It is the responsible thing to do.
