Champion Risen Giant

LameFox.6349

Simple fix: make it like the next stage, where you’ve got to hold the land for x time and then the stuff still there dies, or you fall back and lose.

More likely fix: the mobs become so powerful or loot is so nerfed nobody does the event anymore.

Also risen giants are harmless unless you get stomped or can’t deal with grubs/adds. So take AOE and/or reflect and/or blind and attack it from range (you can dodge stomps but unlike the Nageling giant these guys seem to just stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, until you’re all out of endurance) and just wear it down if you feel like opening the gates. The risen there even with quite a few people at the event don’t ever seem to become very formidable.

Oh and naturally kill the catapults. You could dodge them but they deserve to be punished for adding nothing but irritation to anything they’re near.

Ruined Ore Chunks

Have you by any chance the Last Stand trait on your warrior? Because having the stability activated by this trait during a harvesting results AUTOMATICALLY in ruined mats. That was quite the surprise to me, since you seem to be able to pick this trait specifically to be more resistant to aggression and be able to do quicker gathering routes, while it produces exactly the opposite: it negates you completely from harvesting on routes on which stability would help you speed up (such as Orr).
I was quite outraged and opened a thread about it, but of course anything that means making the game fairly rewarding/possibiliting farming is ignored/nerfed/screw-you by Arenanet.

That trait only activates when you’re hit with a control effect, which would have disrupted what you were doing anyway, but it acts like an immediate stunbreak of sorts. I’m guessing what happens is normally you’d be unable to finish mining and therefore could not receive ruined ore, but with the trait you get hit by the effect while mining, which is apparently enough to ruin it, then the stunbreak/stability kicks in so you stand there and keep swinging your pickaxe. I’d suggest if you suspect you’ll be attacked by anything with control effects while mining (and for whatever reason you don’t just kill it first) then you should activate stability from balanced stance or the dolyak signet, and mine with stability already up.

Hrm… yeah that’s interesting. For reference I took a quick screenshot of the armour previewed on a male human (and you thought it looked dirty with your dye). Now it looks like the more ^ shaped line across the chest is present in the male version and your left example, but missing from the female version of the noble’s chest piece, and some of the lines in the NPC’s armour aren’t there either. It almost seems like variations of the same design, and the NPC maybe has an earlier one?

Interesting. I’ve placed turrets at the Claw before and they attacked it (not to overwhelming success or anything, but they’re turrets). Maybe they did this to stop them shooting the ‘ghosts’ of killed/not-yet-spawned environmental objects, and dragons not being actual creatures just happened to count.

Grenades are buggy with some walls in WvW, and will travel into/through them. I’m guessing this is related somehow, since normally they will impact solid things along their way: merely seeing a place like with eyefinity doesn’t let your grenades actually arrive there like it could with an arrow cart.

There’s a setting for high resolution player textures in your graphics options. I’m guessing if you turn it off you might get to look something like how the NPC’s do.

Edit: actually I just checked and it claims to work on NPC’s too. I’d suggest testing it anyway though, because the way you look in that screenshot is much closer to how I see NPC’s in that armour – and even just the armour on stands in rooms – than your screenshot of an NPC wearing it, with maxed settings.

Edit2: quick screenshot of some still ones. The lights seems a lot less intense here than your SS so it’s less pronounced, but on my settings it’s significantly different from the NPC you found. If not something to do with textures, maybe lighting, reflections, etc? The ‘clean’ one looks almost like it’s got a coat of grey paint on it, so anything that makes metal look less… well, metal… might make you look that way.

Per the wiki: Some environmental weapons and utility skills count as a specific weapon type. For example, the golem suit in Air Drop counts as a hammer, and the arcane skills count as a sword. Some, such as Lightning Hammer[verification requested] do not count towards anything.

Didn’t have any of those either.

Edit: It could also be a variation of the other ‘achievement bug’. For example sometimes after completing an achievement(usually daily item) and then you go view a vista the game re-displays that as if you just finished the achievement.

I get that one a lot, but in this case I hadn’t been using a sword at all recently. If not a weapon it may have just been one of the wells… of course I don’t think I can really check now, since the achievement is fully completed and (AFAIK) doesn’t keep counting my ‘sword’ kills any longer.

Unfortunately that’s the only thing she has which I want, so no reactor votes for me.

Whether that’s better or worse than choosing things individually… I’ve no idea. It’s probably the only way they could even get me to vote on some of these things, because I just don’t care (mini-games), so there’s that.

Unfortunately because I do use actual swords on other classes, I’ve no idea how long it’s been this way. I’d guess that much of the achievement came from real swords on my warrior, though, because I’ve not used daggers a great deal really.

Question? The Only Way to Vote is to Jump?

in Cutthroat Politics

LameFox.6349

@OP – if you haven’t just used a mesmer yet, you should be able to reach the top with very little keystrokes or mouse control happening at once.

1. waterfalls: stand before them with the sprint element, press 2 (or whatever you’ve got that slot bound to) then press it again once you’re through. Move yourself to the next one however you normally do, then repeat the process.

2a. platforms: line yourself up with the first platform. You can then ignore the mouse. You only need to be able to move forward, and then as you reach the edge, use ‘assisted leap’ (I think that’s its name – the one that takes the weapon skill slot #1). That should take you to the next platform, and then all you need to do is stop running before you go over the edge. Since you can leave the mouse alone until you’ve landed and are aiming yourself for the next platform, you should only have to use 2 keys during the jump itself.

2b. alternative platforms: if the lightning skill works as intended for you (as in, it doesn’t hurl you far further than it should) you can actually cross the platforms with that instead, using the ground-targeting. The crystal for this is under a tiny ramp where the fire imp spawns, not sure how many people notice it.

3. lightning: once you’re at the pub, the lightning should work fine, even if it likes to throw you off things like mine does. In this case you approach the little obelisk rock things (first one near the lightning guy, who will probably be a marker on the minimap if you’ve never been there before) and the skill’s ground-targeting sign goes away when you’re close enough. Then you activate the skill and wait.

There’s a nice solid wall past your destination, which is why it doesn’t really matter if it works properly or not. Move up to the next obelisk after the one you just landed by and repeat. No actual controls during the lightning jump things should be necessary here, just getting yourself next to a stone and pressing a single key, then waiting until you’ve landed and stopped spinning in the air.

4. fin: you should be where the instances are.

There is something fundamental which so many people miss about Kiel, Trahearne, etc. They’re not ‘stealing credit’, they’re bloody AI controlled characters. They let you do the footwork because if NPC’s were doing the sodding footwork, you’d have no game to play. All that separates Kiel and Trahearne from characters like Rox and Braham (besides nightmare-inducing eyes) is that their contribution befits a leadership role instead of a ’I’ll cast some combo fields here’ role.

Or somewhere like that – it had a jumping puzzle nearby with a room like the ‘name of god’ scene from The Last Crusade – last night, where some skritt stealing (weirdly huge) harpy eggs angered the harpies and along comes a veteran to kill them all. I was on a way under-levelled alt but a party member there killed this harpy, which apparently started out mostly dead and began to gain health as he fought it, except that then it died before its HP was full, and the event just… never really ended…

This was on TC btw. So if you see skritt stealing harpy eggs forever out there, it may be related to this.

LameFox.6349

Maybe Anet could make Unique more clear for those who does not understand what it means, but that’s about that.

Well that’s quite an understatement. In the strictest sense we should expect that if something is ‘unique’ only one of it even exists, which clearly isn’t the case. In a lack of any information from the game to explain otherwise, of course people will fall back to other meanings of the word, not one of which suggests being able to obtain many but inexplicably wear just one.

Judging by their decision to add tutorials and improve the ‘hints system’ they might have realized by now that making people paranoid enough to /wiki a single vague word on an item in case it means ‘THIS WILL GO HORRIBLY WRONG’ is a bad idea.

WvW traders outdated for scaled characters

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: LameFox.6349

LameFox.6349

I’m assuming this is unintentional since… well, why do it?

I recently took a new character to WvW, and since I had a bunch of tokens I figured I’d get it skins for its armour and weapons. However, when I went to the vendors, I found they’d only sell some lvl 60 Invader’s gear, like they used to, and all of the new options (different stats, skins, etc) were gone. Even the tabs for them didn’t exist. From the looks of it, when this stuff was added to the traders nobody thought to add any of it to the scaled down versions.

I’m not sure if pre-80 versions of the non-Invader’s gear even exist, but if they do, nobody’s going to be buying them. Skins as far as I can tell don’t even have level requirements, but I can’t buy those for it either, and of course they’re soulbound (what on earth for? I can transfer the tokens to any character, what would it matter if I could transfer a skin to it?) so I can’t even do the logical thing and just buy them on one of my 80’s.

Okay no, the mesmer seems okay (tested with dual-swords). I don’t have other humans to test with though (someone in one of nick’s threads mentioned it was an issue for their elementalist?) so I’m not sure if it might affect other human classes.

I’m also pretty sure now this only affects a stowed main-hand weapon. When you wield it, it grows to its proper size, and when stowed it shrinks again. The off-hand seems okay regardless.

LameFox.6349

Let’s guesstimate. 2 million players, for simplicity we’ll just take that as the amount of characters (yes I dropped 1 million on purpose). My waypoints are usually in the 2 – 3.5s – let’s say 2 uses per day, 4 weeks – 28 days – let’s go with 50% reduction and make it 2s total per day …

28 × 2 × 2 x 2,000,000 … that’s a lot of silver.

So just for myself, likely around 2 gold savings which is a lot more vs keys that I am not buying

Edit: Plus the added peace of mind of not supporting chest-RNG (’cause not all RNG is “bad”) – priceless.

2g of savings over a month is terrible. You’d be better off leaving the WP cost so as not to increase inflation, and running around Orr for an extra hour that month without waypointing.

The champ abomination outside of Caer Shadowfain is easy as long as people dodge it and don’t let it build up stacks which make it move faster.

I think most of the time the problem is that people think they’ve dodged it, or that they’re outside its range, but it still hits them. The attack covers a vastly greater area than the visuals for it suggest it should.

A bit of trivia: there’s actually (I haven’t checked in a while, but I doubt they’ve fixed it) a similar monster by the skill challenge in western Malchor’s Leap (where you fight a Quaggan) which has all the same skills and behaviour as the Champion Risen Abomination, and actually used to look just like it as well, but is called a corrupted Vigil something. It now has the look of a much smaller creature, and the exact same reach as the abomination, which was already bigger than it appeared on the latter. If you haven’t seen it since it looked like an abomination you should go kick it one day and kite around long enough to see it throw that club, just for amusement. Don’t ask anyone where it got that, though.

From what I could tell, the weapon on the right side of the body was the correct size whether it was the main-hand (wielded) or the off-hand (stowed). I’m not sure however if the weapon on the left side of the body is always smaller, or only when it’s the stowed main-hander.

Also I think when I previewed the pistol I may actually have been on a lvl 1 human mesmer. I’m going to sleep now but I’ll try to remember to check tomorrow whether it affects that as well, or only charr characters.

Both of these daggers are WvW exotic Invader’s stats with Flame skin applied. Completely identical, even to their upgrade (crest of the soldier). Character is a lvl80 necromancer; IIRC the skins are WvW exotic chest, Orr temple exotic boots, AC pants, and molten gauntlets. Helm/shoulder hidden.

For some reason, the one on the right is inexplicably larger. Zoomed in you should be able to see that even though the character’s right leg is further back, the handle reaches as far as that of the left dagger, and the blade reaches further back by quite a way. They appear to be at the same height on the body as well. When they’re wielded it’s a bit harder to tell because the character’s hands move around, so I’m not sure if they both change to the same size or not.

Worth noting also: I was previewing the Jade pistol a few days ago, and noticed that it was quite noticeably larger when I checked ‘wield’ (right hand) as opposed to leaving it stowed (left side). I thought at the time it was a bug with the preview, but it seems a weapon (stowed?) on your left side will actually shrink.

People need to stop complaining about things that are 100% a result of their network and connection to the source.

I can play this MMOFPS on US servers with less trouble than GW2. The latency is present and accounted for, but unless their server screws itself that day, latency is all it is – a delay – and I can move around the world without any issues. I’ve even asked people I was fighting if I’d appeared to warp or stutter for them and as far as they could tell I was moving, shooting, etc. totally normally (including using aircraft; I wasn’t just moving everywhere really slowly).

Stop trying to ruin the experience for those of us in a location that is more reasonable for playing the game just because you have bad lag.

Your paranoia is both hilarious and sad at the same time. Most times I’ve played any MMO it’s been on US servers (exceptions being one in Sweden, another in Asia, and EVE which I believe has servers in London). Besides EVE (for obvious reasons) jumping and even flying in them hasn’t been uncommon, and nonetheless I’ve never had anything quite so awkward and broken happen in any of them as does in GW2. Somewhere along the way they’ve made some sort of design choice that makes this kind of movement very imprecise and troublesome in this game specifically, it’s not as if a game would have to throw away fast movement in general to work over a distance.

You need to realize your limitation and work within them, not try and force everyone else to work within them too.

Yes, sort of like how if you really need to cluster your MMO servers in two places worldwide, you should probably expect people to be playing from far away a lot of the time.

But would I have this problem if I was in the USA?
I must know this. Please, people with gaming PCs and good internet connections that live in the USA, do you guys have this problem too when there are too many people online?
Maybe it is a combination of many people online at the same time and the distance.

In /map chat of an overflow server I was in, there were people complaining they had issues with the skills even in the USA. Of course I don’t know what their connexion is like, but what I have experienced is that in most cases, my connexion seeming bad to this game doesn’t coincide with any trouble connecting to other things in the same city and state as the servers. Specifically, there was one day a few weeks ago when it seemed I just couldn’t really connect to Texas very well in general.

That should not matter. How someone else obtained anything should have no bearing on how you obtained it.

It doesn’t affect how you obtained it, but if the value it has to you is that it changes how other people perceive you, you generally will rely on them assuming it must have been hard to get, because you really can’t stop everyone who ever sees your title and tell them the story. They’d probably flee, for a start, and there’s a lot of them as well.

Personally I look at a title as little other than a bit of decoration, and I think people overestimate how much others care about hard achievements, especially when it can be so vastly easier completely by the luck that the server is low pop at the time and you’re close to it. Mostly the former I’m starting to think, because my latency isn’t going anywhere, yet with less people online the skills are more likely to work better, and sometimes even perfectly.

Looks to me more like they assign it value based on how others (whether or not they have it) perceive the difficulty you must have gone through to get it. At least, since they say they don’t care how many people have it, but they think it loses some sort of value because it was easy for someone else to get, that seems to be what they’re getting at.

This behavior is patronizing, what everybody who stands at the finish line is saying is “Hey guys behind us, we’re better than you, but here’s a free win for you anyway.”
Sure it’s “Nice” but its disrespectful at the same time. It may not be the intention to be disrespectful, but that’s what you’re telling people when you do that.

There’s nothing inherent in the action (or inaction) of letting someone pass you that requires or communicates a belief that being in front makes you ‘better than’. That may – or may not – be their motivation, but unless they communicate that in a much clearer way, it’s only speculation on anyone else’s part and would be silly to take offensively.

I’m sure there do exist some people with a need to feel like the person ahead is so threatened by them that they’d take any chance they can to (officially) beat them at something; I’m sure some would prefer everybody fake that rather than openly not care about their position at the finish line, but ultimately whatever inadequacy they feel upon realizing they’re taking this more seriously than someone they’re not beating is coming from them, not a person who was probably just trying to free someone of the rush to get their achievement while it’s still there.

Snatching a victory from someone who has been winning and getting your achievement for it is far more satisfying than having someone “Let you win.”

Then don’t cross. I seriously doubt they’d mind.

It seems a large percentage of players get their fun not from playing but rather from collecting achievements. I wonder if this can somehow be used in real life, to encourage certain behaviors through a system that offers official “achievements” (but no other rewards)?

Yes, with the slight hitch that ‘official’ has less significance when you are inside the universe rather than its creator, as you can’t make your achievements an innate part of it. It’s more like getting recognition from an NPC (i.e. not many people will care much unless it also provides a tangible reward).

Now they’ve updated it to give you silver, karma AND quartz… Great…

So sort of like doing an event where you kill a load of trash in the process (random kite cookies fortunes from murdered trash mobs are easily my primary source of quartz; they also give the currency stuff and recipes pretty frequently).

Honestly if you don’t like the race… don’t race. It’s far from the only way to get silver, karma, or quartz.

The point isn’t to get silver, karma, and quartz, its to get the “proper” rewards that we missed out on.

This isn’t a bug that prevented you from getting your reward or something you can’t repeat like achievements. There was an activity with such a payout which you completed and received the appropriate compensation. Now the compensation has improved and you can either keep doing it because you don’t mind doing it, or make your profits elsewhere because you don’t like it.

Something tells me you’d have sudden second thoughts about setting this precedent if they also decided to lower your rewards to the ‘proper’ amount every time they changed (i.e. nerfed) loot drops and that sort of thing (exploits aside).
