I agree with the OP basically.
I don’t do all of the LS content. I didn’t do SAB v1. I gave it a try when it rolled around again this time. Tried a single zone, and that was about all I was interested in. I did’t rush to do the Tequatl stuff during it’s first week, I was enjoying leveling my thief, and just didn’t feel like doing it.
Generally speaking, I look at the LS content so I can catch the story involved, then check out the meta reward and if I want it, I do it. Otherwise, I skip it and go about my normal play. Or, in the case of Tequatl, I didn’t find the wings all that desirable, but just from getting most of the LS dailies, I got it anyway… shrug
I don’t stress over how many AP points I have either. Those roll in just from playing the game. I guess I’m just very laid back about how I play.
Great so then you dont need ascended gear at all since you dont need the resistance. Problem solved.
Are you that ignorant? You cannot complete even scales without proper AR, it’s gear-gated. Read the fine manual before you start arguing on topic you have zero knowledge.
you’re the one who wants ascended gear out of the picture while retaining the difficulty of fractals as is. I already told you thats impossible without gating out people who dont want to care about gear which is one of the core pillars of this game.
Presented with that you said AR is unimportant and its all about the states when rebutted on that now you’re saying AR is crucial (which was my whole point all along) so please decide on a version and stick to it.
The higher levels of fractals are all doable with exotics though. Something people have been doing for quite some time; they’ve simply managed their AR needs through the few trinkets previously made available.
Anet could have just as easily added the AR slots to existing exotic armor, rather than implementing a whole new tier with greater gear stats. I think that might have been a better solution. Then just make the infusions the difficult part to obtain, to satisfy the grind seekers and ‘elite’ crowd. This would also have appeased non-fractals players, since they’d have the option of adding the infusions to their existing gear (instead of feeling like they have to re-gear)….but they wouldn’t be necessary. Just an added perk…
Thats, thats what I imagined too.
Ar slot on exotics would be an option but I suppose they didnt go that route cause they’d still have a problem with people who only feel better gear is what rewards are about. might as well hit two birds with one stone.
I think Colin was only partially truthful in his PAX explanation as to why they gave us another gear tier. He stated that essentially they’d made an error in calculating how long it would take players to get the top tier of gear (exotics) and they had a set amount of ‘time’ that they wanted that gearing up to take. We, the players, blew that calculation out of the water, so they gave us Ascended. Something that does take a set amount of time, and requires a little bit of effort to obtain if you desire to. Ascended is still wholly optional for everything besides fractals, imo.
Additionally, I think when they were looking at this data, they were influenced by just the number of people that were asking for some type of gear progression. Something that was asked for, loudly, on these forums. I saw some of it in game, but no where near as much. In this sense, they gave in, and stepped away from pure horizontal progression, to appease what they felt the masses wanted. Didn’t make me happy in the least, but the way the implemented it, I have no sense of “must rush to get this.” Nothing beyond the desire to eventually have each character decked out in BiS options. Of course, I may skip it all together and just go straight for legendaries, seems like a more logical investment.
Of course, the introduction of this tier after the fact is more of the issue than anything else. Had GW2 launched with ascended and all it’s requirements, people wouldn’t be grumbling as loudly right now.
Great so then you dont need ascended gear at all since you dont need the resistance. Problem solved.

That’s certainly part of the answer to the question about why some people want BiS gear. There’s more to it, and any generalization is going to miss some of what’s going on.
As to the question you actually quoted, the answer is because mastering a challenge is an affirmation of skill. A “victory” that is based around the idea, “It would have been easy if I wore my gear.” is much less satisfying. Getting to the point where numbers aren’t holding you back is the starting point.
That’s why so many people get jazzed in their first raid — because they’re past the “gearing” up phase and into the purported challenge. It’ also why some raiders drop out once a raid is on farm and they see that the system is predicated on short spurts where you master new content followed by lengthy drags in which you get to the numbers needed to “progress.”
I would argue that a good chunk of it is mental though…. Based on human nature, and conditioning. However, you have a point that any generalization cannot hold true for all cases. It’s simply not possible.
Those who want challenge and who made the effort starting at launch to get their characters BiS gear were looking forward to playing hard content to challenge themselves. Instead of getting spurts of challenge, they got “Repeat the same stuff you did to gear up before to gear yourself back up to BiS. Oh, by the way, you have all 8 classes at 80 that were in BiS? Expect this process to take exponentially longer.”
I won’t disagree that for those that were already geared before Ascended, the additional tier is a pain in the kitten. It sucks. I get to do it myself. But the fact remains that it is wholly unnecessary unless you’re specifically doing the highest levels of fractals, and people have been doing those in exotics up till now anyway, so what’s changed? Our perspective. We are presented with a new tier of gear, which is in itself a challenge to achieve (unless you happen to already have most everything, which it seems more than a few did), but it not necessary for the player to go out and experience the challenges you speak of. You have the availability and the opportunity to do both. One of the biggest bones of contention (beyond just the whole new tier thing) is the ‘feeling’ that we now need to have this gear, when factually we simply don’t unless we want to. _That is a mental issue.
I think I went off on a tangent there… sorry for the temporary insanity. I’m not even sure I addressed the original point. I need to go find myself some cafffine haha
I agree with all the replies you got Charak, it’s all your fault, the game is perfect in every way.
lol it’s far from perfect, but people do burn out and just need a break. it’s normal. of course, he could take a break, find something else he likes better, and then said break becomes a permanent hiatus. like i said, the only constant in life is change.
GW2 is releasing (and is going to release even more) ‘higher numbers’ gear to give people a faux sense of progression – the one that levelling failed to offer.
I disagree with this assessment. However, having read your other posts I’m not going to bother arguing with you as it would be a waste of my time. I will simply leave it at your opinion and mine differ greatly.
Let’s strike a deal: You give me your reasons for disagreeing because I am genuinely curious about other people’s point of view and in turn I promise I won’t spin this out into a long discussion. I promise not to reply to your explanation and just leave it as is.
I don’t mind having a discussion, if you can have one rationally, which was my concern from your other posts.
Its obvious that you’re jaded. You’re hurt, feeling betrayed, and lied to, by Anet; resulting in lashing out on the forums. You can’t ‘directly’ vent your displeasure to the company, so you do it here. Which only results in insult to injury because 1) not as many people here necessarily agree with you as you’d hoped, and/or 2) inside you know its not likely anything you say on here will be read or listened to by anyone of importance.
Thus, feeling like I’d simply be wasting my time. Generally speaking, whether you’re curious about others points or not, when we’re emotionally upset (and it’s obvious you are at least a little by the tone of your posts) it doesn’t matter what someone else says. Be it logical or rational, unless it’s what we want to hear, we are neither going to accept or be happy about it.
I do understand being upset about paying for something, only to have it turn out to not be what you really wanted. Or to have it change from something you thought you liked, into something you weren’t so pleased with. It sucks, I get that.
You take a break. You do the same thing in real life.
When work wears you down, you take a few days off.
When your family wears you down, you walk away and spend some “me” time.
When your hobby wears you down, you find something else to do for a bit.
The only constant in life is change, and because of this doing the same thing again and again can only be enjoyable for so long. After a period of time we are going to desire some measure of change. It’s normal.
Take a break for a while. Play a different game. Dust off the book you’ve been intending to read. Go have a girls or guys night out. GW2 will be here when you’re feeling reinvigorated enough to play it again.
I was thinking that after every month we could post what we accomplished and what we want to do for next month. We can keep small goals to stay interested, and long term goals (like making a legendary) as something to work for and to look forward to
.
An interesting idea… and not one that I’d be against per se…. but there just wouldn’t be enough space (kitten char limit!) in a single post.
Of course…that would require me to be somewhat…organized… haha
Answer this question, while you’re at it. Why do so many players who complain about lack of difficulty reject the suggestion that they just kitten their character?
It’s a mental thing. A lot of people only feel ‘good’ about their character when they can generate those huge numbers. They don’t feel like they are getting any better unless they have the ever climbing stats. “Oh look at me, I’m awesome, I do so much damage I can just faceroll through the game. No skill required”
shrug We could go into the whole human psychology thing… and I started to, but opted to delete it. It’s just too long and boring to be honest. Chalk it up to its a mental drawback of the human ego, the inability to outgrow the need be “the big bad.” Some might say it’s a form of compensation….
Mostly the ingame music, but I have a large variety of music at my disposal if I ever opted to listen to something else. What would be entirely dependent on my mood at the time… could be anything from classical (Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major for example) to “rock” (used loosely considering there are all sorts of ‘rock’ categories). I could be listening to Lady Gaga Applause one minute, and want to listen to FFDP Lift Me Up the next. shrug I’m just odd…
Make southsun foes drop a guaranteed 3-5 t6 fine materials. All of them, which one you get is random. There wouldn’t be a foe left standing….
I assume you are only joking since the result would be catastrophic(maybe exaggerating a bit :P). t6 would effectively turn into Silk Scraps and Thick Leather Sections.
lol yes I was mostly joking I have no desire to tank the economy quite that badly, although it would stabilize some after the initial flood of materials.
Still, anyone that knows me knows that I don’t really agree with ‘guaranteed drops of x’ of any kind. All games use rng to determine loot drops, otherwise you end up with exactly what you were talking about… a terrible economy, with no sale value on anything.
I’m not a huge fan of rng personally, but the dye packs wouldn’t bother me as much if they weren’t character bound. I wouldn’t mind spending a few dollars on the rng dye packs if I didn’t have to worry about “well which character do I put this on” all the time. Then, I could easily share duplicates with my guild mates (who might not necessarily have the funds to invest) or drop them in the forge if I so chose.
Hrm… this month….
Prob finish leveling my thief, and then go back to leveling my necro
Maybe work on my first legendary – thinking the staff possibly. Still haven’t really decided
Looking forward to Halloween…
Want to finish getting my artificing up to 500 too, but not sure if that will happen this month
Planning to successfully complete Tequatl too, at least once
Probably function the same way as the previous event dyes and unlimited gathering tools… So after a period of time they won’t be available, until they go on sale again (like things did with the 10 day anniversary sale)
Thinking I might get that pick though….
But but… the challenge!
I’ll make sure to have a fresh bottle of whiskey to take the ‘edge’ off the frustration that ‘challenge’ will induce. haha.
Mad King….. + …..Scarlet….
Oh dear.
“Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t”
To each their own. Other people do like them. They can’t really please everyone. I mean, if they removed it, it would kitten off the people that like it. The best we can hope for is a happy medium where they give you a little bit of each option.
Every new thing that has come out so far has been Light-bright heaven.
I didn’t think the Tequatl or Ascended items were so bad….
Cobalt will burn your retinas to a crisp on the other hand….

I judge people by the forums obviously because they are the ones that I am referring to. The pseudo casuals that spam QQ ascended/manifesto topics.
Think about what I have said again. It is clear that I got nothing against true casuals. The problem is with the ones that spread the hatered via forums. Their philosophy is “we can have fun but you cant, take your fun out of our game”.
There have been an equal number of “hard core” players that have kittened just as loudly about having to ‘work for ascended.’ Neither one side or the other is less guilty than the rest. Many ‘hard core’ players just wanted it handed to them as well, because it was ‘out of their way’ or they ‘dont craft’ blah blah.
LOVE this encounter!
Now I’ve been fighting dragons since before it was cool to fight dragons, before their loot was upgraded, before there were timers for the spawns.
Many was the time when I would get a message from a friend…..
Friend: Fractal?
Me: no – Dragon!!!
Friend: lolBut I knew deep in my heart that my dragon hunting loving ways would pay off.
With 7 Tequatl the Sunless kills under my belt, the Sunbringer title over my head, and my mini Tequatl flying around me I feel like Mother of Dragons.
Good stuff
I bow before your awesomeness.
I haven’t managed to make it into a successful group….yet, but I haven’t given up. I want that revolver!
Nope. Personally I don’t have an issue with this either. It’s pretty standard in games as far as my experience.
I can understand gear, but soul bound items bought from the store should become unbound when the character is deleted.
Are you talking like the armor skins? Or the unlimited gathering tools?
In the case of the armor skins, could you use a trans splitter to regain the skin? Or possible even just trans it to a white to make it account bound?
As for the unlimited tools….. hmmm… not sure how I feel about that one. I mean, yes, I would prefer if those bad boys were account bound, but I guess my question would be…why would you put them on a char you weren’t positive you would keep?
While I will tend to agree, we seem to be in the minority of the vocal minority. chuckle
Nope. Personally I don’t have an issue with this either. It’s pretty standard in games as far as my experience.
I think ascended should be available through all the same means that exotic armor is available through…. just make it more expensive.
Logic dictates that this can’t be a permanent addition as Scarlet is going to be defeated at some point in the future. I wonder how they are going to pitch this =/
Don’t we ‘defeat’ the bosses at the end of any dungeon path? shrug
There is the possibility that we don’t ‘kill’ scarlet though. She could be a persistent villain that just repeatedly crops up. Batman never killed the Joker in the series – caught him plenty of times, but he always got loose to cause havoc again.
Interesting update even if it’s a bit small. Given the fact that the Molten alliance facility and the aetherblade dungeon will be coming back in the form of fractals, I bet this will be permanent.
Seems like lately Anet has been focusing less on “big” LS updates that force you to do random chores and more on one big central item in the update and some random stuff for the meta around it that you can ignore if you just do the daily for a while.
Although I thought the whole of TA was getting an update not just a new path… if not I’ll be a little bit disappointed but the new path should be fun.
You are right, that’s indeed the direction they are going. But tell me why whole TA needs an update ?
Well one path of TA is completely broken and never run. And the devs said ALL dungeon paths would be getting a revamp like AC to introduce better mechanics and less autoattack spam. Now it seems like they are just adding a single path instead.
Colin has told us that they are still working on revamping the dungeon paths. As recently as PAX…. this kitten just takes time.
Hm… a new dungeon path…that’s it? And it requires me to pug to do it…. lovely. sigh Going to be a very, very frustrating couple of weeks… Maybe not, we’ll see how it goes…
Join a guild, that likes to do dungeons
I lead my own guild, thank you. We are just…small. Which is fine by me.
I was under the impression the next round of Legendaries will be accessories or back items?
I am almost sure Colin said something like that during the PAX interviewSomewhat correct.
Legendary items are coming back before the end of the year, but they won’t be weapons or armors (although ascended armor will be coming)
Colin instead confirmed that it would be an accessory, which includes rings/earrings/amulet/backpiece. However, he also said that it would be one at a time. So we won’t get, say, a legendary ring AND amulet. It will only be one of ring/ammy/ear/back.
Somewhat wrong
Colin said in his preview what to expect in 2013:
We aren’t quite ready to go into all the details here, but what I can say is you will see a specific way to build precursor items on your way to a legendary. On top of this, you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013. Building your precursor will require a large amount of the new crafting material rewards listed above, 500 in crafting, and likely a combination of other items earned for completing more specific content in the game.
He told in an interview, that the new legendary gear might be a back item and/or some juwel stuff. But this was about the additonal gear, not about the weapons.
The quote is from this site: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
The PAX interview which Vol is taking his clarification from came after the blog post. The PAX clarification is the most ‘up to date’ word we’ve had from Colin regarding legendaries coming this year.
Surely there must be more then that
I would assume so as well, but maybe not. Have to catch the live stream and see what’s said.
Then again, Queen’s Speech didn’t look like much either…
Hm… a new dungeon path…that’s it? And it requires me to pug to do it…. lovely. sigh Going to be a very, very frustrating couple of weeks… Maybe not, we’ll see how it goes…

Hi Ho Carrot Away!
Considering you get the bonus chest once a day, which is already a guaranteed rare or exotic, I feel the guaranteed 5 random armor/weapon from the reg chest are ok at being blue or above.

Then don’t go to Dulfy.
This is a problem that goes well beyond GW2. It’s inherent to current generation of gaming as a whole. Games are watered down with walkthroughs, hours of tutorials, holding your hand, telling you every little detail about what you have to do. On top of that, countless sites devoted to telling you exactly what to do.
If you take many gamers from this current generation, plop them in front of an old NES/SNES game they don’t know what to do. The original Zelda – here’s a wooden sword and a map that shows you little to nothing, go save the Princess and the world.
Super Metroid – here’s a planet you’ve landed on, go find that Metroid and figure out and get everything on your own, cause we’re not going to tell you anything.
Games used to be built on exploration and finding things on your own. Now they’re built that way….with hand-holding every step of the way. dulfy is just a result of this.
Gosh, so much this…. I remember getting so completely lost in the original Zelda, I think I eventually gave up. Wizards and Warriors was another one that was less than wonderful. Hours of trying to figure out the right path and how to get to some of the keys I needed.
Now, we we buy a game and it’s Prima walkthrough guide is pretty much right there next to it. Bah.
Admitted I don’t mind having the resource when I’m completely stuck, but for the most part I prefer to go ‘do it on my own’ because that’s the way I grew up playing games.
-snip-
Are there going to be more dungeons? Should there be? Am I alone in wanting more consistent content? Yes, living stories have individual dungeons (that go away) and you are focused on the living story more than dungeoneering, but is there any intention at all to set a new bar for us to reach for? I feel like I’ve beaten Guild Wars 2, and while yes, I can explore some extra content, there’s nothing more for me to strive for.
-snip-
So Arena Net, fellow players, am I alone in these concerns? Does anyone else wish the bar could occasionally be moved up once in a while? Will there be new, harder dungeons? Or is it time for me to move on?
Regarding fractals:
There are more fractals coming… the return of the molten dungeon, and the aetherblade dungeon as fractals. As well as the reactor fractal has all been said to be expected by the end of the year. Personally, I don’t know if they will make that deadline, but that’s what we’ve been told.
Regarding dungeons:
Based on the information supplied to us by Colin in both his blog and from PAX, it does not sound like there will be any further static dungeons for this campaign. The 8 dungeons we have currently are ‘it.’ However, it has been stated that they are working on overhauling each of those dungeon paths, with some of them eventually becoming similar to ‘elite’ style content – ie can only do them if you’re really good. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy7CcwnfUdU right around 16:20, he starts discussing dungeons) Such things will take time, so definitely don’t expect it tomorrow. However, if they approach dungeon paths similarly to how they apporached Teq, I can very much see some of them becoming much harder.
Beyond this, we have been told that we will see expansion type content in the future of living story. Additional static dungeons are something I would consider to be this type of content, so when we do get an expansion, we may see more dungeons. Nothing has been said to definitively rule them out when places like the crystal desert, cantha, or elona get opened back up to us. So, there is that possibility of seeing more dungeons in future ‘campaigns.’
In the mean time though, I’m sure we’ll see a few more of the temporary ones with living story, and if they are good (and we ask nicely) they may eventually join the fractals line up.
Here’s to hoping…
The only two differences between dulfy and the rest of the playerbase are:
- the intelligence to figure what clues mean
- the persistence to hunt for the solutionAnd access to test server.
And a fourth difference. Large numbers of people sending her the information. No one actually believes she does this all by herself do they?
Considering the number of people she tends to thank in each guide…. her doing it all on her own never crossed my mind…
From the remarks some people have made, they think she figures it out all by her lonesome. No help at all. No life either for that matter since she can get these guides out after each patch without fail.
Yeah, I’d caught that. I was biting my tongue in regards to it honestly.

I feel you Eladriel, I really do. Admittedly personal story on my first character was a nightmare. Claw Island solo on an ele…just ouch. Kitten useless NPCs!
Still…3 characters later….really not so much of an issue. It’s the learning curve that’s a nightmare…
Legendaries aren’t really intended to be a short term goal, unless you want grind like you’re talking about. Many people that got theirs in such a short time did exactly what you’re talking about doing (grinding their brains out for hours upon hours a day), or invested in gems to gold using real cash (which once upon a time was sort of worth it I guess) which they then sank into materials. Some people also acquired gold just playing the TP, which they then turned around and sank into their legendaries. Essentially, it’s a ‘pick your poison’ scenario if you’re in rush.
The solution – the holy grail, even – is to get them invested.
This is why housing is on the way. Casual players love housing, and it keeps people invested – they think about their little house, and they want to come see it again.
Not all casual players love housing, tyvm. Enough with the generalizations please.
This is like saying [all] hardcore players want the rainbow shooting legendary bow.
I’m quite impressed with your ability to take the suggestion that you like housing so personally, Lanfear. What next, I suggest you like the colour blue and you challenge me to a duel?
Obviously I mean most, not all – there is no all about anything in games, is there?
Enough casual players like housing that it is a good way to get them to stick around – it is especially good to get them to keep coming back to the game. I can’t think of anything quite as broadly liked.
They will need to do a bit better than generic solo instances, though, I suspect – perhaps shared towns more akin to DAoC’s housing zones (but more urban and with massively better visual design).
There is an issue with basic, blanket generalizations though. Too many people take a blanket statement, such as yours, and assume that it applies to all casuals, or all of anyone implied by the blanket generalization. Such things lead to stereotyping, which leads to a heck of lot more issue than it solves. Which was were I actually take issue. I could care less one way or the other about housing.
Edit: Yes, “common sense” would imply that there are exceptions to every ‘rule,’ every mold or model; however….common sense…not so common anymore.
It has been like this since forever but this Tequatl patch just push it over the top.
How the hell are we suppose to do the “Hunt the Dragon” achievement without Dulfy? It is like finding a needle at the bottom of the sea. Anet is getting lazy and just throw out there “oh hey there are 10 small things in this map hope u find it” instead of giving us clues or anything.
Without Dulfy I seriously think it wouldnt have been possible for the general public to get anything done, except maybe the 0.1% most hardcore player in the game.
As other’s have said, we’ve had several other similar achievements, and all have been doable without Dulfy (F&F collectibles, 40 crystals for Bizarre, etc). These simply require you to go explore a specific map. Is that really so hard? It tells you which maps to go to, it tells you how many you need to find. Ok sure, for sparkly fen, perhaps they should have labeled the teeth as “dragon tooth” for consistency.
Dulfy is a crutch which people lean on because they assume they won’t be able to do it without it. It is completely doable without said crutch, but most are not even willing to try.
The problem with the unvested masses is that they are fickle and will leave for the next MMO when it comes out.
The solution – the holy grail, even – is to get them invested.

Rewards are time-gated, content is not. Sorry (not) for those that wish to repeat the same thing over and over every day just for the rewards.
I have to agree with Wolfie here.
Dungeons can be ran as many times as you’d like to. It’s not like WoW raids where you can only do it once within a specified time frame (aren’t raids locked to once a week? so hard to remember…) The only ‘time gated’ content for a dungeon path is it’s “bonus chest” which contains the gold and 40 additional tokens. Additional run still net you the ‘standard’ token rewards, and the end chest.
I won’t argue that some of the time gating is annoying. I don’t particularly like the time gating on the ascended crafting; however, I understand their reasoning behind it (which was explained) and can accept it.
Generally speaking these things don’t bother me extensively because I’m here to play, and enjoy myself. I’m not here ‘for the shinies.’
No thank you. Unless you’re referring to having additional options within the current dailies list. I would be fine with having some Orr specific options on the dailies list (in addition to what is already there), but I would not like to have an “Orr dailies” category.
Just 2 for now. My other 6 chars are all over the board though… from 20 to 50-ish. What can I say, I like to take my time….
The changes to Teq are perm, they are here to stay.
The “Boss Week” achievements are ‘limited time’ (there’s only 6, inc the meta, plus the dailies if you want the meta) but are very easy to get. These are the ‘living story’ for this 2 week segment.
Teq’s individual Boss achievements (under “Boss” section) are perm as well. You can take your time getting those.
Oh gosh……um…..so many options…
Probably when I completed my first jumping puzzle…. I just wish I’d gotten screenies (silly me didn’t think to take any) It was euphoric.
Here’s the twitch recording where a couple of the devs demo and explain the lfg tool:
Colin stated that a skin vault was still very much something they wanted to do in his PAX interview. It’s not on their “to do list” for this year, based on available information, but I’m crossing my fingers for next year.
