So... When are Guild Wars coming?

You are not the first person to make this comment nor the last, and yes, people do want GvG in this game, and many other things too. But it’s getting a little old that people refuse to acknowledge that the actual title of the game is not named for GvG but rather the lore of the universe. And it’s not a “new” nomenclature, a lot of games use names or parts of names that don’t match their game play.

What’s getting old is people who are so naive about business that they think developers won’t fit a trivial part of the game’s lore to a marketable name. The GvG game mode was not present in the original Guild Wars, but Tombs was, and it was informally a guild mode (as intended) since PUGs would not stand a chance. You guys are arguing a technicality, and a very silly one at that.

You realize that the name is from the lore right?
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Lore

It has nothing to do with guild wars in the game

Yeah, why would you name the game after a central gameplay feature when you could name it after an obscure backstory element that is mentioned maybe twice in the entire game. A logical person might see the cause and effect as being the other way around.

My Birthday Wish

Leablo.2651

Hopefully they do this but based on when you “first created your account” and not your characters. I played for 7 years and all my chars are 4 months old only and never get a single present

How did you not keep a PvE main? I mean, if you never played the campaigns then you really have nothing to complain about. But if you did, why would you delete your main? PvP characters are so easy to recycle there’s no reason that you would have to use every slot for them.

Anyway, there’s a good reason for doing birthdays by character — it means you get 5 presents instead of 1! I’m pretty sure some people in GW1 bought dozens of character slots just to farm bday gifts. It’s a good marketing tactic.

The Mists is sPvP.

Gold Sellers controlling Precursor market

in Black Lion Trading Co

Say there are 50 of The Lover in the market for a 100 gold each. You can buy all of them, relist five of them 500g each and buy up any new items that enter the market (while simultaneously posting phony buy orders to force the price to remain high). This allows you to charge 3-5x more USD for the 45+ copies of The Lover that you AREN’T listing.

Now do you see why it makes loads of sense for these gold farms to try and dominate the precursor market?

No, I see why it makes sense for everyone to do this. Which makes it competition, not control.

It may not prove that they have the control over the market but to think that they don’t manipulate curtain or all of the most wanted items is just silly, it’s in their best interest that those things are high in price, so that whoever buys one they get more gold than it’s worth, and whoever sees the price and is unable to afford it but wants it fast ends up buying gold, it’s a vicious circle really.

If that’s your assumption then the message shown in the OP doesn’t even matter. Just another witch hunt thread then? Okay, get the pitchforks.

Focus on one character or several alts?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

For your first character I would prioritize getting to 80. This gives you firsthand experience of everything in the game, and ensures that you have access to it. There are also economic advantages since some rewards are scaled by level for doing the exact same thing (daily chest), while festival activities scale up to 80, which puts low-level characters at a gear handicap.

Leveling multiple characters simultaneously carries the danger of excessive grind and burnout. GW2 only has a couple zone branches (mainly the newbie areas) and you’re otherwise playing through the same content 5 times in a row. At this rate you might get sick of the game before you even make it to 80.

On the other hand, you should feel free to experiment with different professions to find one that you are most comfortable with, but don’t take too long in making up your mind.

100% map completion can only be done by a character. It is not account-wide.

Achievement chasing also effectively requires a level 80, as many are related to the storyline, jumping puzzles, exploration, dungeons, etc. all of which go up to 80. While some achievements (racial) also necessitate having multiple characters, these are more limited in scope.

In short, GW2 still encourages having a main for getting things done.

These are not viable strategies against designed mechanics. These are taking advantages of bugs, and exploiting them.

So far, that is only your opinion, not an enforced fact.

So here it’s not a case of being “that guy” who wants everything done his way. It’s a case of knowing that people are doing something that they shouldn’t be doing, and not wanting to participate, and not feeling that it’s right to ask anyone else to do it, either.

And yet you know there are people who will expect to do it this way. So bring it up before you start, and everyone knows what they’re getting into. You won’t have to do anything you don’t want to and you avoid the drama of a disagreement when you’re already partway through. Make sense?

I think this guild system is actually one of the best “new” features of an MMO. The problems you describe have more to do with crappy guilds (spoiler: most are) than with the guild system. One of the reasons I like this system is that it makes it much more transparent just how self-important some guild leaders are, and gives rank and file players more of a choice and more power to find better guilds.

Without specifics, it’s hard to know where to draw the line. In general, if you find that you are constantly in disagreement with the 4 other people in your party, then chances are good that you are that guy. The one who ruins PUGs because he expects everyone else to play how he wants instead of how the majority of the group wants. If this particular issue is a deal-breaker for you, then you should state very clearly up front when joining a party that you’re not willing to play in any way that is not clearly intended by the developers. Otherwise you are a submarining the PUGs that you join.

Guesting is Coming

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Leablo.2651

WvW is just a fundamentally flawed concept to begin with. There’s no good solution to it once you’ve decided to implement it. There shouldn’t even be a need to pick or transfer between servers. This is a network logistics issue, thinly disguised as a gameplay mechanic and while making customers deal with it might have been acceptable in the fledgling MMO industry, developers need to make this problem transparent for users (as Anet had the brilliance to do in GW1). You can have big zerg battle maps without having to restrict teams by server. Yes I know people loved RvR in DAoC but this is a throwback, not an evolution of the idea. Innovation was sorely needed here and unfortunately WvW was a slavish copy that sacrificed one of the best community features of GW1, the fact that everyone around the globe could play together.

Meanwhile, players will now need to take a guess on which server to make a permanent home without really knowing how things will turn out in the long term future. If they guess wrong, they’ll have to pay money out of their own pockets to address GW2’s antiquated server architecture.

What kinds of things do you miss from GW 1?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

I love GW1. Hell, I still play it a lot. Like, actively play it. And it sounds like most of you are taking a ride on the nostalgia train, and didn’t bother to take your rose-tinted glasses off.

FYI I still play GW1 as well, and if anyone has difficulty remembering things correctly I think it’s you.

The amount of skills in gw1 was huge. There were so many that Anet couldn’t keep up with balancing them. And because of that, certain skills were better than others, and meta builds existed.

Yeah Anet couldn’t keep up, as that’s pretty much impossible. It does not mean, however, that they didn’t try (all the way up to GW2 launch), and kept the game varied and changing even as a result of imperfect fixes. No matter what they rebalance in GW2, you’re going to have the same 5 skills per weapon setup serving as the core of any build. There isn’t even the possibility to vary them.

I’m not sure you’re using “meta” the right way either. Meta, as I understand it, is the expression for the non-stop process of making builds to counter the builds you are currently up against. It represents the game’s dynamics and constantly changing nature even when the actual mechanics are static. You’re talking about using specific builds for speed clearing and such. I don’t think that’s normally what one calls meta. Meta is also largely missing from GW2 because of the new skillbars.

And if you wanted to succeed in GW1 past simply completing the story, whether solo or group, you were expected/bullied into using these few builds. Your class doesnt have a meta build that is used in this dungeon? cant come with.

True for speed-clearing groups, because SC by definition requires specific skills to do things fast. Absolutely untrue for soloing. You can play whatever build you like as long as it’s not terrible and you’re not terrible at playing it.

the newbies would sit around and fail at it over and over again (until they looked meta builds up on the internet).

No, all a newbie has to do is go to a forum and ask, or read the wiki’s mission article to get an explanation of what will happen, and then go solo it with any non-terrible build they like. They can even look it up before they start and get full bonus on their first try (as I did for many missions). I played the entire game, all campaigns, solo from start to finish. I have never grouped for PvE and personally enjoyed the challenge. I might also mention that I have played through the game with all 10 professions, and not wanting to spend too much money on training alts, I completed the campaigns using only the free starter + EotN skills, on all except my 3 mains (one from each campaign). You do not “need” specific builds to complete any mission, you don’t even need to buy any skills if you really don’t want to.

When GW1 released, it wasn’t very good. At the end of its life, it was so catered to the hardcore playerbase that newbies had a hard time getting into it. The game segregated its players so much (through missions, HM, elite missions, instanced world, among others) that I often forget I am online, until guild chat gets lively.

Prophecies was probably the single hardest campaign overall. Factions arguably had the hardest missions. It was Nightfall that introduced heroes, revamped the way item mods worked (making it easier to get the right stats) and made the entire game a whole lot easier, including a relatively easy campaign itself. As time went on, things were generally made easier (e.g. survivor & LDoA titles, improvements to trade UI, 7 hero parties, the list goes on), in general making things easier to obtain and complete. There is no way I would imagine a newbie having an easier time with Prophecies and Factions than one who started with Nightfall and have no idea how you came to that conclusion.

Is this name allowed? :)

I think the key factors here are A) obscurity and B.) plausible deniability. A name like Ray Park could very well be anyone’s name, the actor doesn’t own those two words. OTOH, if your character is Ray Park and he looks exactly like Ray Park the actor, then there’s a good chance (assuming someone recognizes it) that you might have to change it, because you’re actually referencing some other entity. Needless to say, some names are more likely to generate attention than others. Basically the more famous/distinct the name is, the more likely it will get removed.

Human Zones and Totalitarianism

I still hold that the OP approached the whole scenario with faulty logic – separatists aren’t ever portrayed as civilian political dissidents, they’re consistently portrayed as criminals conducting terror attacks and attempting assassinations.

That portrayal is part of his point. This is how all dissidents are portrayed, until they win. Then they become revolutionaries/freedom fighters/minutemen instead of rebels/terrorists/guerrillas. Note that the Order of Whispers uses the same kind of tactics that a separatist would use.

The objective of these quests is to hunt people down and confront them, up to and including killing them without due process in their homes, and this is basically treated in as casual a manner as one might be asked to pick up 10 wildflowers. Regardless of whether you believe the action to be justified, the way the game treats it is crass and unsophisticated. Yes it’s just a video game, and saying that is missing the point, because the designers could have used this to add substance to the story, resulting in a better game overall. It’s a wasted opportunity along with the rest of the “personal storyline”. Here we see what they could have (and should have) done with that concept — e.g. your character chooses whether they want to side with the monarchy or with the separatists, after being put through a series of tough moral choices. But instead we get “my sister was killed by centaurs/I miss the circus”. How disappointing.

User B posts 100 units
User A adds 50 units (total 150)

Does User C buy all of A’s units or 100 of A’s and 50 of B’s?

Uh… that is what a knockoff is. A copy of a popular product at a reduced price. If it wasn’t the exact same, then it wouldn’t be a knockoff.

In your definition, that would mean everything in the world is a knockoff. Cause while they are not the exact same, they are all similar. Which is simply untrue. For something to be a knockoff, it has to be the same thing.

Cause what would be the point of buying a knockoff Gucci bag if it is different from a regular Gucci bag? Then it wouldn’t be a Gucci bag at all and be something completely different. Thus, not a knockoff. It has to be the same to be considered a knockoff.

Suffice to say that your assumptions are wrong. Here’s a trivial counterexample. If something has a Gucci logo on it, but it isn’t made by Gucci, then it’s an illegal knockoff, no matter how original the rest of the bag is.

This “Avatar Toy” store seems to produce a number of replicas from different games, some of which are tagged with the actual game it is taken from, and others not (and MS probably has rules about tagging non-Xbox games).

Legally, the question is whether the design contains specifically copied elements, as to be considered a derivative work. It’s up to Anet to get upset about this, and subsequently to argue their case, which would be for a jury to decide. It’s an interesting find for sure, and if it upsets you personally, you should send it directly to Anet.

GW2 and trinity: healthy discussion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

I personally can’t wait for the players who would insult anyone who perfers the trinity as “unskilled.” I dare you to go up to a top 100 WoW raiding guild and say that.

Why do we need to talk to a “top 100” raiding guild? Do you have to be in the top 100 in order to be successful at raiding, or does being in the top 100 give you a trivial means to invalidate the very issue (of skill) that we are talking about? “Top” anything implies that they are more skilled than others. It does not say that skill is required to complete the raid, which is all that most players really care about.

Trinity by definition reduces the scope of what each player has to think about and concentrates their responsibilities to the things they are naturally best at doing. Consequently, the game becomes easier for each individual. When the content is designed in such a way, the remaining challenge becomes one of coordination between the different parts of the team, and less the skill of the individual players. You’ll notice that most serious guilds have some sort of voice chat requirement, but have no actual skill test or requirement. That’s not a coincidence.

You placed offers over 190g and still did not get the item. The facts speak for themselves. If you felt that 170g was the “fair” offer, why did you increase your price? You could have left the offer at 170g and waited for supply to meet you. You ended up buying the item at what was essentially the original sell offer. That means that price was the right one to begin with and you were lowballing the whole time.

Even assuming you were manipulated into the price, the fact is that you received the item that you were asking for and you agreed to the price that was paid. In no way can you call this a scam. This is nothing more than buyer’s remorse.
