Dungeon is way too hard.

The dungeon itself is ok, but the skill level of your average LFG tool PUG group is just terrible and definitely not sufficient for this path.

And in most cases people expect instant succes. Quite a few LFG players will leave the first time they wipe. People are used to world of warcraft 5 man instances where:

- Knowing the tactics isnt really needed.
- Dieing or wiping is almost impossible unless you collectively stand in the fire for 10 secs straight.
- The instances/bossfights are doable by just two people (and in some cases solo).
- Quite a few players (semi) afk the entire place.
- There is 0 interaction/communication.
- 0 Sense of achievement.
- The instance/fights become unmemorable (due to the lack of challenge, teammechanics and lack of any need to know the tactics).

The sad thing is that wow instances used to be a lot more challenging. Untill the same type of guys we have here spammed the wow forums demanding nerfs. And eventho people begged Blizzard to reconsider, they listened to the whiners.

Result is what we see today in wow. People rush through the content with little no effort and get bored in record time. Which in my eyes is one of the biggest reasons why they lost millions of subs.

No You don’t get me.

I know It CAN be made ok ? But most PUGs I join still WANT Guardians/Mesmer and no other classes get it ? I don’t want to play Guardian/Mesmer becouse I like my thief and this is the class I enjoy most. That’s why I put it in quotes.

I play an underdog class myself (engineer) and i never have that issue. Maybe its because i dont join a group that specifically asks for full zerker warriors or w/e. There are plenty of other groups to pick from. And in a worst case scenario you can start your own group with your own requirements.

This backpack seems fine on my asura engi. They dont have a real backpack attached to it, so essentially its just a floating device behind your back. Which isnt as noticable if youre smaller. There is still a gap though if you look at it from a certain angle.

Unskippable cutscenes

So because you want to watch the cutscene, you want to force everyone else to have to watch it also? Is that not exactly like the people you are complaining about who want to skip and pressure others to skip as well?

Keep in mind that its only a few seconds in most cases. So if i had to pick never watch any cutscenes ever again or make them unskippable….i would want them to be unskippable yes.

Or give an option to show or listen to the conversations while you continue the dungeon.

Take a look at this. Its a stream vod of 2 pvpers and their pug doing it for the first time, with 0 knowledge about strategies. Check their uber setup without mesmer or guardian. Go ahead and listen to their teams super hardcore skypecall and their discussions about strategies.

They hate doing PvE and purely do it for the backpackskin.

Its a nice combination of challenging encounters, teamwork and mechanics that make this one of the best if not the best 5 man dungeon ive ever played. Havent touched arah yet so i guess thats next on my list.

But i agree with you mister OP. This game could use some instances for the hardcore crowd. Where you need:

- A group thats is fully optimized with proper runes, uttilities, food/sharpeningstones etc.
- Everyone to know the tactics and every single bit of positioning out of the top his head.
- Everyone in the group to be on teamspeak.

And even then it should take days (or even weeks) and multiple progress instance runs to finish, even for the best groups out there.

I do care. Which is why I fear that if the content keeps going this way, I might as well stop bothering with the Living Story, since I probably won’t be able to get past it, along with many others. Then they’ll probably get sick of it and leave the game soon after. But I clearly don’t know a thing.

Short term fun is better than no fun at all, to me anyway.

You might care, but due to your lack of experience in other MMOs you are unaware of what dumbing down instances can do to an MMO. Ive seen this happen before and i know what happened after they decided to tone them down.

I started playing with around 12 guys and i’m the only one that is left playing GW2. Our “guild” literally has 1 person in it….me. Every single one of them left due to a lack of challenging instance content.

The general opinion about GW2 dungeons:

- Lack of challenge and risk (and proper reward). If you happen to die you will get ressed almost instantly.
- Very zergy since you dont need to play by the rules of the encounter (no need to follow mechanics). Just stand in a corner and dps the kitten out of the boss or mobpack.
- No teambased gameplay due to lack of holy trinity and lack of team mechanics.

So what youre saying is: scr*w them i want my content that i will clear withh little to no effort. Even if that means it will drag the game down.

Dungeons should evolve around 3 development principles:

- Challenging but doable for a random group.
- Teamwork required to complete it.
- Fun and diverse mechanics.

While this dungeon has its annoyances like certain bugs. And its far from perfect with some fights better tuned and more enjoyable than others. But its the first 5 man instance i played in any MMO where i can say these 3 principles are implemented in the entire design.

The biggest problem is that a lot of gamers these days are used to “failproof content”. They will come to the forums and complain regardless.

The only thing we can do is hope and pray Anet ignores it. We dont want a second wow, with its unmemorable failproof soloable 5 man content.

It’s clear to me now that I’m just second rate at even PVE. Can’t do PvP or WvW well, so I thought I’d at least gotten good at this. I’ll just stick to what I can do.

No i am second rate in PvE. People who like challenging content that evolves around mechanics should just F off since the content needs to be designed around Nilkemia one or two shotting it.

Right?

I think you dont realize how much harm this would do to GW2. Adding challenging content that evolves around mechanics and teamplay is the best thing for GW2 itself.

You know why an MMO like wow lost millions of its subs during the last year alone? Its not because its outdated or it lacks content

They made everything oneshotttable for everyone and the game whent on a downhill slope eversince (losing almost 30% of their subs in a few months).

But i guess you dont care about GW2 as long as you have your short term fun right?

A poor engineer's guide to an MMORPG dungeon

I don’t recall ever typing once that I was better, or thought I was better, than anyone else on these forums. Ever. Feel free to find a post where I said that, and I’ll correct my mistake.

Well you expect to be able to run through this dungeon during your first 2-3 pug runs. Like i said…it wasnt untill my 6th run that i made it. So why should you be able to do it faster than me?

And those contradict each other how exactly? There’s no connection here.

I like the opening post because they point out certain terms people use quite a bit here, as well as pointing out that people shouldn’t be judged solely by their class, but by their skill and how well they work with the others in a dungeon.

The main message is to be patient and treat everyone respectfull within your dungeon. Its fine that you like that, but youre a ragequiter yourself. The direct opposite of what this thread discribes.

[And I didn’t demand the dungeon change/firing, I said it should happen. But I already know it won’t, so no point demanding. Quit twisting my words.

You stated they should change the dungeon or get fired. Adding should to that sentence doesnt make it any less offensive and absurd tbh.

I didn’t demand instant success, which is why I gave 3 attempts to this path, and only gave up after too many consecutive losses and too many others just leaving/ragequitting.

I complimented this thread because I agree with a good amount of the opening post, nothing more.

A learning experience doable for everyone? I think you’re referring to the Molten Facility. A pity that one is coming back in Fractals of the Mists.

- I did it with my 6th group. As i told you before i just kept queueing untill i found some guys who where nice and patient enough. Added them to my friendslist, made a group with them and completed it shortly after.

So i guess you think you are a lot better than i am, since you expected to do it a lot faster? I know im quite casual, but there is no need to act like an elitist like that.

- You agree with a thread that discusses proper morals and values within a dungeon setting. Yet you come to the come to the forums after ragequitting a dungeon and write a post demanding the dungeon to be changed or the devs to be fired.

- If it really was purely for the hardcore crowd, only fully optimized groups who have everyone on voiceip would do it. Like you saw in the vod i posted for you in your other thread.

Its funny how you talk about woodenpotatoes in your own thread and how his video only describes the lore. There where a few statements he made that describe the difficulty and what he thinks about it (starts at 3.28 in):

The negative attitude is for a big part due to casualization. People demand instant succes nowadays and if they dont get it, they will ragequit (and make angry posts on the forums). So yes i would like to see something like:

“Be prepared to wipe a few times. Wiping is a key component of learning certain challenging encounters.

Realize that this is a learning experience that is doable for everyone. As long as you are able to reflect on your own mistakes and willing to put enough effort in to it to make this path your own."

There are guys in this thread who made posts (in other threads) asking for Anet to replace this path completely or fire the devs responsible for it. Followed up by a post complimenting this thread.

Unskippable cutscenes

in Twilight Assault

Locuz.2651

I vote for no skip at all. I started running dungeon paths quite recenly (mostly pvped since beta) and most of times i skip the cutscenes. Not since i dont want to see them… but i dont want to let my group wait or get locked out of bossfights.

My point is that in most random groups you will see 1 or 2 guys who would like to see them. And since its only a few seconds in most cases it shouldnt be that big of a deal right?

I had 1 group where i was watching a cutscene and when i came out of it I saw two guys spamming something like “skip it you f in *” in caps. So id rather want those few seconds to be unskippable so i can immerse myself in peace without having to worry about what happens if i dont.

A real challenge would require them to step away from the standard COE speedclear builds even AFTER they figured everything out.

I remember naxx in vanilla, cthun pre nerf, vashj prenerf and sunwell in wow. Bosses that took weeks to down at times.

I remember how happy we where in vanilla how it “only” took us 2 weeks of constant wiping on 4 horsemen, while it was meant to be hard.

These days people start moaning after their first wipe or failed pug run.

In other words, trying to use the in-game chat itself isn’t sufficient. Well done, designers! Need to figure out how to get Skype to work then, I guess…don’t like talking, but who cares?

Good Players don’t need to use chat or VoIP. Good Players can see/understand encounters during the encounter, and then adjust accordingly. This new TA path is a perfect example of that. And since its only 5 players, its not nearly as organized as the new Teq2.0 encounter.

We didnt use skype, and didnt have the most optimized group either. Its not even about being good or not either (more about knowing tactics). Biggest problem are ragers like the guy you quoted. Guys who expect everything to be one shotted…if that doesnt happen they whont bother.

Its a bit like what happened with wows 5 man instances. Constant moaning from people like this untill they became the unmemorable snoozefests they are today. Where noone wipes, people are on follow or afk half of the instance. Where barely anyone knows the tactics and whenever you ask you get a “just hit the boss untill it dies”.

Good for you. I get it already. I suck.

I’m clearly not who this Living Story was made for, so I’ll just stick to farming nodes and running the same dungeon paths I can do. That’s a better use of my time.

I probably wiped as least as much as you did. Should i stick to ore farming aswell?

Difference between you and me is that i experienced the older days of MMOs. Where it took weeks before bosses got downed. I remember vashj in wow. It took 8 weeks before the best guild in the world got to her and killed her the first time.

It took us a month of 20-30 wipes a day 3 days a week once we reached her and every single 10% extra we got off her was considered an achievement.

You tried a new dungeon with a pug on the first day it got released. You first puggroup failed and you gave up.

The dumb thing is….if you just tried it with another group you probably wouldve made it. Just like i did, while im even more casual than you are.

This is in fact the best 5 man instance ive ever played (in any of the 30+ MMOs i played).

Why you ask?

Since it offers a nice balance of 3 key elements that imo make or break a dungeon:

- Mechanics based boss fights (instead of tank and spank/zergfests)
- Team based gameplay where you need everyone to do well.
- Enough challenge to make it memorable (but easy enough for any group to clear it)

The current generation of MMO gamers expect instant succes. They want to run in to instances and one shot everything that is in there. If they dont , they go to the forums and complain. Its a lot easier to complain than it is to improve. Sad thing is that developers quite often will listen and change their game due to these complaints.

I saw this happen in wow, which is one of the main reasons they lost millions of subs. Its all about rushing to the finish line instead of overcoming challenges nowadays. Its incredibly egocentrical since they dont realize that what theyre asking for is that all content should be centered around them and around them 1 or 2 shotting everything. Who cares about people who want challenging content right?

Am i an elitist hardcore dungeonrunner that plays full zerker warrior parties? Really far from it in fact. Im a random pvp specced and geared engineer that started doing GW2 instances like 1-2 weeks ago (eventho i played GW2 since the beta). I think i finished 5-6 paths in the entire game.

So how did i do this instance you may ask? I just kept queueing and trying even after failed attempts. Allong the way i added 2 nice guys to me friendslist. After the 5 th group i asked those 2 guys that met earler to make a new group + added two guys i knew from before that.

Result is that we completed it, i learned everything about that place, enjoyed it a lot and made two new friends.

To be fair, that’s just the mainframe and there are many mechanics than can originate from it. The issue here is that I am struggling to believe that OP did play WoW enough to reach challenging instances and raids (WotLK, Cata and MoP are a snorefest mostly)

Most fights that have a lot of (cool) mechanics are raids. While i must agree that this content isnt as good mechanically as a fight like Vashj for example in SSC (which is about as good as it gets in terms of proper balance between challenge, teamwork and mechanics). Its still a good step in the right direction and easily on par with some other wow raid fights.

The 5 man wow instances however have either next to no mechanics….or the boss itself is so easy that the mechanics are for show. So they dont even come close to this.

Not a big fan of the ooze section (got stuck on that last night), but the rest of the dungeon seems fine! I wish that they would have more one on one cutscenes with Caithe, though.

Even the ooze bit can be aced quite easily.

- Use two elemental kiters that go in first and pick up as many elementals as possible. Mind that the first one spawns close to the ooze, so its adviceable to pick that up first. Once they picked them up, let the kiters kite them to the far door and keep them busy there.

- Once the elementals are at the door the ooze kiters pick up their ooze and guide it to the far door. Make sure they dont pick them up to early, or they will take elemental dmg for no reason.

The 5th member can function as a roamer to help outwhereever needed. Make sure you use profs that are good kiters like rangers or mesmers as elemental kiters.

Thats it. 100% succes rate.

This really just illustrates a point: there needs to be two modes for new content. There are both hardcore and casual players in the game. Each should be able to enjoy the new content.

This isnt hardcore content though. Hardcore content would mean that you would need a fully optimized groups that are all on teamspeak together. It would mean that even if your team knows exactly what to do, it would still be hard.

This path is purely about knowing the strategies for the bosses and puzzles. Once enough people figure out what to do, the entire path becomes easy all of a sudden.

Youll see.

Really?? like REALLY? Literally any of THEM!…-_- We shall agree to disagree ok…cos u are so far off base..and prolly just looking for attention

99% of the 5 man content in WOW is a failproof zergfest. I have never seen any (pug) group as off late that struggled with any 5 man content (since the start of cata). And they nerfed all content and whent full casual mode since, where:

- every 5 man boss is 1 shottable by everyone. (where is the challenge?)
- mechanics can be ignored in quite some cases or are so simple that its a pure tank and spank pretty much (mechanics where are they?).
- you can do every single fight with 2 or 3 people standing afk a few meters from the boss. (no teameffort involved).

And dont get me started about dungeons while leveling. Pretty much all bosses are soloable by equal level players that have gear that is up to par. Doing it with 5 means its a snooze fest, something similar to champ farm runs (but even easier than that).

I played wow since day 1 untill the 26th of june this year. I dont recall a single fight that requires a full team effort or that was as challenging as this. Shattered halls pre nerf patch and grim Batol before the nerf patch come the closest in terms of difficulty, but they wherent as teambased as this one is. So what youre saying is that you want 5 man content to be soloable like in wow? Simple tank and spank fights where every single group no matter how bad they do will 1 shot the boss.

There are three things that make this dungeon the best 5 man content ive played so far:

- All fights require a teameffort.
- Fights are based on mechanics instead of zerging a boss down.
- Its hard enough to make it a challenge but doable enough so even not fully optimized pug groups can do it.

If you dont like this struggle. Just wait a few weeks untill the majority of players know exactly what to do + watch some youtube vids to get an idea of the tactics.

5)If all the devs do lately is releaseing hard annoying content that is not for me should i keep playing and supporting this game?

Its not hard if you know the strategies for each fight. If everyone does and does what theyre supposed to be doing the dungeon is relatively easy. You dont need the optimal setup, gear or specs even.

So what i suggest that you (as person that doesnt like “hard” content) should do is wait. Watch a video showing the strategies for each and every fight and retry it in a few days. By then most people will know hot to deal with every puzzle and fight in there and you would be aswell since you watched the video

Once you did that you can come back here and tell us how it wasnt that bad afterall.

With that said i must say that this is probably the best 5 man instance i ever played in any MMO. An instance that relies on mechanics and teamwork instead of boring zergcontent.

Played all 3 professions extensively (200 + hours at least). I am a player who likes depth and (build) variety. I like to play classes that are somewhat decent in all aspects of the game. I need to be somewhat mobile and be able to take care of myself. From that perspective:

Ranger: Imo the most boring class in the game atm. Is mobile enough but the combat is quite simple / lacks depth and it doesnt flow as nicely as with other classes.

Necromancer: Nice control and enough variety build wise. Relatively easy to play though and lacks depth like ranger. Doesnt have enough mobility either.

Engineer: One of the hardest /deepest classes in the game. Amazing build variety with more changes incoming to add even more builds to that list. Mobility, survivability, burst potential. Engineer has it all .

If you want an easy /relatively faceroll prof/ class go for necro or ranger. If you wnat to play the best class in the game engineer is what you should pick.

A few suggestions from an ex hardcore player

Locuz.2651

So here my opinion as a 6 class 2400+er (former multi glad and multi season hota). You need to understand “fixing” the game is and should be based on priorities.

1] While some more build diversity would be nice it isnt something that will make or break the game. Even if we saw only 5 builds/runesetups in the current meta….it would be fine as long as there is balance and fun gameplay within that meta.

As long as there is proper balance between risk/reward (abbilitie wise) and the gameplay is skillbased and diverse.

2] I personally dont see any issues with Bunkers, esp not not in the current meta (where necros can easily solo guardians). Ive seen top tier guardians drop in 2 globals during swaps. And good guardians dont sit on points since their support far to important during bigger fights. Its more likely that spirit rangers or even warriors take care of that.

I think its good to have different roles within a meta. I even dare to say that i would like to see roles like somewhat off a support/healer. When playing vs good players, the game feels far to bursty/zergy. A bit like the PvE mentality (zerker or gtfo).

3] I agree on this one but its a tricky one. As we can see in wow its really hard to design pvp maps that work from a competetive standpoint and are enjoyable to play. I actually hated 90% of wows pvp maps (esp Isle and Strand).

So if they rush it, the maps may end up like some BGs in wow (hated by the majority of players).

PAX Tourney shows why GW2 is NOT an esport

in PvP

Posted by: Locuz.2651

Locuz.2651

The biggest issue is that it is hard to follow what is going on. Two of GW2 key features really work against this:

- The graphical style is not really suitable for competetive play. Especially if you consider that most players who play at competetive level play on low settings to cranck up their FPS as high as possible (which isnt really an issue for cartoony games).

- The lack of UI features that show whats going on. I know its one of things devs are proud of “reading the game and not the UI” but its working against them from an Esport PoV. People are zoomed out completely to have an overview of a fight, so UI features are the only thing viewers can rely on.

On top of those two you have a meta with a lot of aoe clutter and spirits, which doesnt help.

And dont get me started about proper balance between risk and reward (hard hitting/high impact attacks should be designed in a way that they require more setup/have a bigger casttime).

In a lot of ways this is like real life.

Some people are so focussed on things that annoy them, that they forget looking at bright side of things. Quite a few MMO players are exactly like that.

And since MMOs are games with very diverse mechanics and content, there is literally always something to whine about.

Thing is, people who tend to do that dont change. Its their personality, so they cant help it really.

Guild Wars 2 Dead? (Culling)

Yeah, congratulations. 3 out of, (how many servers?), are full like that. The rest have maybe 4 people on non-patch days, 10 on patch days. Again, you guys continue to show “proof” that guild wars 2 is not dead. It’s not dead on patch days for sure, but every other day besides patch days are dead. Completely and utterly dead. It’s alright if you don’t believe me, because I couldn’t care less. You can watch the playerbase slowly decline into oblivion when these continuous living story patches continue to be repetitive. Don’t get me wrong I like GW2, but the playerbase on my server and many other’s is nearly non-existent.

I think ive guested to 10 different servers over the last few weeks. Its not as bad as you described. Hell my own server isnt even the most populated one in eu and i got thrown in to overlow at 6 this morning, (when i joined the zoneevent 5 minutes late).

And i see a lot of people in any zone during any moment of the day. When playing wow i could level 1-90 and i would find next to no players outside of the bigger cities / quest hubs. Thats with cross realm zones….where they combine all players from 10 different realms who are playing in that zone. And still i would find less people in mid level zones then i would find in GW2.

And you will always have lesser populated servers in any MMO. I played in wow on a server named Genjuros which was literally like what you described. With as main difference that i could see exactly how many where on unless more then 50 where on (what never happened). Most of the times during peak hours on weekdays it didnt pass the 20-30 mark .

You have to keep in mind aswell its an MMO. There is no dev team in the world that can create thousands of hours of non repetetive content. The only question is; in what shape do you want your repetition.

Most MMO players will tunnel the grinds and leave the rest.

Difference is that GW2 offers more diversity and different angles due to the 2 weekly updates.

And Queen Jennah's big reveal....

You don’t actually believe that both Anise, her childhood friend, leader of the shining blade and an incredibly gifted and powerful mesmer, as well as her most devoted lover would be deceived by a cheap mesmer illusion on a piece of scrap metal?

Maybe she got replaced aswell

Actually, Queen Jenna was a robot

I think this is actually closer to the truth then you might think.

There are two things in the queens jubilee patch that (in my eyes) are off:

- Why would the queen that is happy that we survived wars / struggles create a dome with simulations of those actual struggles. Doesnt sound like something a queen would
do.

- Why would the queen “gift” us a bunch of robot guardians? Doesnt seem to be that big of an improvement, especially after seeing logans 1v1 fight with one.

The only thing that makes sense is that these are like trojans. That will keep us trapped in the dome when everyone groups up in there (like during the queens speech) + open the gates to Divinitys Reach to invading forces.

So yes. I think the queen is kidnapped by aetherblade pirates, held hostage in a steamcreature ridden base created by the inquest and replaced by a watchknight. In fact one of the asura storylines features an asura + steamcreatures that came from the future who talked about attacking divinities reach.

You can see during the Logan vs watchknight fight, the watchknight has ways to change their form in to whatever creature or person they want to. So changing in to the Queen shouldnt be an issue for them.

Might sound farfetched but ye…

Coming back to gw2

I would pick one of the deeper complex classes since those are less likely to bore you. After looking at your description id say elementalist.

The only downside is that they arent the ideal pick in the current “best in slot” tournament setup.

If you want a prof thats top tier in both PvE and sPvP atm, pick guardian. The main downside is thakittens easier to get bored while playing that prof.

Sudden ghosting issue

About a year ago i bought a razer Lycosa mostly to have a proper keyboard to play GW2 with. Everything worked fine so far untill yesterday.

Since yesterday my D key started ghosting all of a sudden. I can use it individually or combine it with any of the modifier keys like shift ctrl or w/e. But combining D with any other letter doesnt work.

I tried using the application on this page and the D key seems to affected idd.

Question is; is there an easy way to find out what caused this? I dont own another keyboard so that simple check isnt possible im afraid

Its getting a bit annoying tbh. Had like 3 games with leavers in a row. During one game a guy left before the gate opened since he tought another guy in our team sucked.

After those 3 games we had that hotfix. So my team ended up in a 2v5 game Fun fun fun.

I think they should deduct some rank points and/or matchmaking rating from people who do that.

Should Guild Wars 2 go free to play?

Can you imagine what would happen if they made it F2P? The servers would be flooded with immature flamers and spammers. And people wouldnt care about getting banned since its F2P anyway. Basicly ruining one of the key features of GW2; a laid back somewhat mature community.

So IF they do it they need to hire a seperate team that babysits the new people the entire day.

Oh yeah, I came from WoW where the transitions to different maps was really smooth, then when I took a look at the map in GW2 I was horrified.

Yup i played wow aswell (for about 7 years on and off).

The transition from one of wows shallow maps to the other might be smooth. But what are you transitioning in to? People and content deprived zones with little to no diversity.

What is endgame supposed to be?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Locuz.2651

Locuz.2651

This isn’t the PR answer, but the real answer is that there is no endgame.

The end game you refer to is an illusion.

Its an excuse created by MMO creators to repeat very specific content on a weekly interval. That way you create a false sense of longetivity and progress.

But then again, the definition of end game will differ for most people. Most would refer to end game as “everything you do once you reach max level”. With that in mind i think GW2 has quite a lot of end game.

If i was the lead dev i would re design the loot/incentives system completely. Thats the main thing i dislike about this game and the main thing that keeps GW2 from being the absolute top dog MMO it could be.

And no im not asking for a gated gear treadmill. Instead more of a “direct reward” system where (jumping) puzzles, instances and worldbosses give usefull rewards instead of vendor trash in 99% of the cases.
