I think plague is actually pretty good. that’s what I use on my necro. perma blinding (+chill with trait) a group is just too good.

Thes best part is that feeling of downing 2-3 players and knowing they are going “wtf, wasn’t that an engineer? aren’t they supposed to be weak?”

Great video and a great guide, I’m considering gearing up to try this out. Out of curiosity, have you considered sigil of strength (30% of 10 second might on crit) over sigil of blood? With all the boon duration this build has going this may help you stack even more might (unless you are hitting 25 stacks all the time anyway).

you can even bring it up to 110% with chocolate omnomberry cream, but I don’t think it’s worth losing w/e other food bonus you are using except for pve. Also, I have no idea if boon duration has some sort of cap. Maybe if they ever add boon duration+precision/power/cd food..

It’s not as straightforward as saying “pistols have the lowest dps”. It depends greatly on what situation you are judging.
Furthermore, the issue of low dps is only clear for p1, the other abilities hit pretty hard in my opinion and since they are somewhat hybrid you can have decent direct damage while all the conditions (4 damaging conditions in a weapon combo, no one else has that as far as I know) tick away which is pretty good ranged dps. Roughly estimating I’d say I do (in wvw/pve) about 2k damage per second with spikes of up 4-5k dmg when confusion kicks, having the advantage of range.
My damage sources aren’t only the pistols, elixirs do had alot of damage as well with the constant 300-400 retaliation hits and perma fury/10+ stacks of might, but I’d still say it’s fairly good even without those.

anyway, I agree that pistol dps is low for it’s #1 skil in a 1v1 situation, the rest.. not so much.

@ goloith and mighty favazz, you are both right. Piercing bullets is completely useless in some situations and a must in others. Same goes for the extra range on pistol skills.
I don’t record group fights and tower/keep defenses (my pc can’t handle fighting and recording those) and in such situations -and others- having both coated bullets and rifled barrels make a difference which helps close the argument for me.

So my good friend Lavzz, The Tekno Viking suggested I tried out boon duration runes instead of the ones I used (adventure). So I dropped the old ones, slotted 2x superior runes of the monk (15% boon duration), 2x superior runes of water (15% boon duration) and 2x major runes of water (10% boon duration). That brings me to a total of 90% (elixir) boon duration.
I was testing i this last week (I also tested migth stacking but I didn’t like losing that extra dodge from runes of the adventure and getting nothing defensive in return) and I was quite happy with it and decided to share with you guys.
I lose a bit of initial damage but I get alot more sustained damage and survivability, especially in fights longer than a minute. I ended up some group fights with 3 mins of swiftness, 1+min regen, etc, which is a bit of an overkill.
this build opens up alot of possibilities for switching traits, one that is lingering in my head is to slot protection injection or protective shield.
About the vid itself: everything was shot this week, it’s the usual 1vX, I included a 1v1 against a thief because I out-thiefed him and it’s always funny to watch. The last fight is against some clueless players, I normaly don’t put those in, but I thought seeing that thief go down and up again was hilarious and there was no real way to cut the fight after that.

Just think when they fix Giver’s weapon stat’s the potential that P/P will have. Think about having easily 100% condition duration and 13+ stacks of might….going to be pretty sick.

I tested that before, I’m too much of a a wuss to drop cloaking device for those 10% from explosives. I have no doubt condition duration is powerful, I do have a necro :p my problem comes with it’s usefulness against perma condition removal classes/builds as I’ve said before.

also, I’ve improved it. I have enough footage for a new vid with this new “build” but i’ll wait at least a couple of days to see if I get better fights recorded.

what I find works best for me against those thieves (and being p/d or d/p or d/d doesnt seem to matter much, what matters is that they have cleanse+regen on stealth, multiple stealth sources and basilisk venom) is:
use S when petrified, count to 3, drop supply crate on them, static shot, blowtorch (by now the stun from supply crate is going away), poison dart as they go into stealth (and get hit by confusion in the process). count to 4 and look for their corpse.
It does not work everytime obviously, a good thief will make you blow your cooldowns, wait for basilisk poison to be ready and get you again. Make sure you only use elixir S when they get you with basilisk as the cooldowns are similar.
I’ve had a number of fights like this, they take forever; good thing is you learn how to time your stuff :p
Something that works very very well too is pain inverter, if you are asura.

Just find what works best for you.
Here’s the thing for me, and why I dropped condition duration: it is absolutely worthless against those players/classes/builds that present a challenge. While it helps and adds alot of damage against less skilled opponents or players who don’t use condition removal, condition duration won’t help you at all against good guardians/eles/thieves and everyone else who has consistent condition removal.
Also, as I said alot of times, I do not go full out condition damage, I have a decent amount of power as well. If you invest less in power and more in condition damage (or defensive stats), duration becomes more important, which is not true for a more balanced build.
I’m trying a different take on my build atm, I’m still testing it to see how it works out, if it works out well you will see a new vid (and changes to my build) soon.

He was really bad or maybe just lagging alot, I almost cut that fight out of the vid because of how bad he played. It’s hard enough for a good greatsword warrior to hit me, its impossible for a bad one.

I have a necro too and Im fairly sure a necro should easily beat me if they have the proper utilities slotted. I disagree on staff being bad for a 1v1 tho, staff 4 can be devastating if used well, staff 3 and 5 can be very annoying too. I wouldn’t recommend keeping the staff for the whole fight, but it certainly can have a place in a 1v1.

I use regular 1-5 and f1-f4. 6 to 0 are bound to mouse buttons.

I’m only human, I make mistakes :p I’m painfully aware of most of them. I think you are referring to the last kill in the vid, I had only 5k hp when I downed that guardian and even tho I healed up to 10k I didn’t want to risk taking more damage -there was a 10-12 man group just south-. I really didn’t need to use it but I did it anyway. I do a similar thing in that fight at the temple but there was an ele around, I was trying to prevent a knockback and taking free damage.

My worst bad habit -and I shouldn’t even say this because thats all you gonna notice now :p – is dodging a blind target.

Now as a kind of postface to the vids I should say: this are not my best fights and they are obviously not my worst moments either. I chose the fights and cut pieces of them off to make them entertaining to watch, meaning you won’t see me chase down a warrior for 2 minutes or wiping a small group with an invulnerable supervisor, but it’s not edited to make me look good either. Alot of the times I get one or two quick kills but then the last one, for a number of possible reasons, takes forever and that’s not entertaining to watch either.
In the last couple of weeks I’ve been humbled by very skillful players and I don’t discard any class beating me in 1v1 now. It’s rare and some never did -that I remember- but it happens. The worst counter to my build is permanent condition removal. I don’t mean removing some conditions every 30-40 seconds, I mean solid and permanent condition removal, the kind elementalists and thieves (on stealth) get.
I do alot of organized duels against great players I meet in wvw and every now and then I get defeated; most of the times it’s a close call and I manage to win a few myself, but other times it’s impossible no matter what I do, unless I go and change spec to specifically fight that one person.
Most of this things are obvious but I don’t want to fool anyone.
Sorry for the wall of text and thanks alot for the comments (keep them coming!) and cumpliments.

Nah, I’ll never leave my engie :p But I’m going to focus a bit more on leveling my next alt and just have some fun playing with all my toons, not just the engie.

it’s not bugged. not like that anyway. you just don’t get big when you get stability now. the boon is still there.

I thought the same when I noticed it but after testing it I saw we still got stability. It’s a good thing too, it was stupid that we announced so obviously to everyone we had stability up. takes longer to notice it like this.

Generally, I kill thieves quite well. They are tied with staff elementalists, rangers and greatsword warriors as the easiest classes to kill for me.
Yesterday I lost twice to a d/d+shortbow thief however. It was the first time in weeks; He had condition removal on stealth and was pretty tanky, the fights took forever (2-3 mins each) and he knew how to use dagger burst after I spent my cooldowns and shortbow kite when needed. Afterwards I swapped elixir C for Pain Inverter -the asura racial- (since he didn’t use conditions) and I killed him 4 times in a row, with pretty much full hp.
I’ve died dueling to a condition damage p/d thief before as well (who also had cleanse on stealth) a couple of times but I killed him more than I died, those fights took even longer (5 mins+).
Overall I’d say bursty thieves are easy, no matter what weapon combo they use, the only ones that pose a problem to me are the ones with condition removal and perma stealth. Basilisk venom can also be a problem if you don’t have your cooldowns ready (elixir S/suply crate).

ever considered runes of the adventure? one extra doge when u heal :p

Except the elementalist can remove 2 conditions when tuning into water (9s)
1 on a water dodge roll (up everytime you attune back to water), 4 on cleansing flame(45s), 1 for each other catnip and depending on healing skills 7 condition removals o-o. And a fart ton of healing skills.

Bunker eles are phenomenal when it comes to removing conditions and the direct damage from the pistol and posion dart from my experience is mehhhhhh.

I’m not denying this. What I’m saying is that against a heavy condition removal bunker ele what I generally see happening is neither me nor the ele having enough damage to kill each other.

and Maskaganda you can get perma poison with hair trigger as long as you use on cd so burn/bleed is what you wanna look for (same duration table anyway).

thats highly dependent of how many hits you get with poison dart tho, but yea, you are right

I’d say 50% duration since it’s really easy to obtain. Enough to have permanent poison on a target and to have 3 second bleeds.

I think I have quite high survivability on my engie. I may take some hard hits now and then but there’s more to survival than just armor/toughness.

@goloith yea, I can see that working well. tbh there’s only a few sacred cows in this build, the full alchemy tree with durations improved and cooldowns reduced and the reduced cooldowns from firearms. High durations on boons and fast reapllication of conditions. Everything else is a matter of preference.

tossed elixirs always gave 1 stack of might. elixirs that you drink give two since december 14th.
the wording on the trait is vague, but not so much on the patch notes
HGH: Drinking an elixir now grants two stacks of might instead of one.

Would love to see the supersize removed from Toss elixir S if it procs stability. (It instantly makes it obvious to enemies that you have stability compared to other classes)

the supersize effect was indeed removed with the latest patch. at least I’m not getting the effect on my asura anymore, it made me confuse for a bit thinking I was missing alot of throws.

I don’t have many complains about my engie either, a few things I’d like fixed/changed are:
-make elixirs in the elixir gun count as actual elixirs
-make the tossed elixirs radius larger (480 should be the minimum) and/or remove the toss altogether and make them work as the toolbelt skill for elixir gun, an aoe centered on you.
-turn acidic elixirs into something like caltrops, at least make it so it’s something that stays there on the ground hurting whatever steps on it. As it is it makes no sense as a trait, why would anyone toss elixirs at an opponent.
-SNIPER KIT, not really, just kidding

That fight clearly demonstrates how underestimated engineers are.

that mesmer fight doesn’t tell the whole story, I only started recording it halfway through it. she caught me trying to cap the camp, we had a number of back and forths and I could never quite finish her before she got to the safety of the camp. at one point she swapped some utility for feedback (at least I didnt see it before) which made my job alot harder.

I really like cloaking device. the stealth duration is generally greater than the immobilize allowing you to move around and reposition yourself; due to delays in rendering, you will appear slightly later on your opponents screen as well. Lastly, not all skills can be swung at empty spaces, a great deal of them require targeting.

4th movie, I wanted to get rid of old footage before the new patch and whatever it brings us. I’ve been lazy and not recording fights very often, also struggling with an aging pc and its hamster powered cpu and hdds. this one has more emphasis on fun(ny) fights and not so much on sprees/personal skill, etc. dont expect anything impressing, ut hopefully good enough to be enjoyable.

what you may see: killing a naked cat, escaping at 1500 hp, the hardest mesmer fight I’ve had in months, a good 1v1 against a necro, a guardian that gets destroyed in 5 seconds and some other decent stuff.

I guess every single mesmer I fight is bad then. It’s been months since one beat me. I’m more afraid of good necros tbh.

On the other hand, the only 1v1’s I lose in WvW are to mesmers. People say engineer is hard to play, but then again they also say pistol is feasible (protip: it’s not).

I run a p/p build and I beat mesmers without any problems, and anything else too. your protip lacks the pro part.

anyway, most engineers are very bad in wvw but the few good ones top anything other classes can do, no doubt in my mind about that.

I haven’t lost a 1v1 in weeks either. I came close to losing against a very good mesmer yesterday, he got me down to 700~hp but I managed to bounce back and kill him. Funny thing is I spoke to the guy later and he told me I was the first guy to kill his mesmer 1v1… and that he had an engineer which he dropped after not being able to do anything with it in wvw.
Last time I lost a 1v1 with my engie was in a couple of duels against players I had beaten numerous times before. One of them was a condition thief that had alot of cleanses, stealth and regen, a perfect build to counter me; even so we were 2-2 that time (about 6-2 for me overall) and the fights took over 5 minutes each. The other one was an engineer… go figure.

I think I have a good balance between power and cd. Power isn’t completely useless in my build, especially against glass cannon builds where cd doesn’t have much time to shine.
I have gone a bit higher on cd and lower on power before and I didn’t feel like it was working, pistol # 1 was doing ridiculously low damage and it was hurting more than it helped. tha’s how it felt to me anyway. besides my conditions hit hard enough as it is.
regarding ur build, nothing wrong with the trait choice, can’t say more before seeing the utilities :p

about the elixirs:

I’ve said this a number of times, the rng really isnt all that bad. It’s not like you get random effects and thats it. You also get very long boon durations and alot of traits to go with them.
Sure, if you consider a level 1 character without any traits elixir H sounds bad, but when you actually spec for it… a 20 second cooldown heal that gives you a 15 second defensive boon (7.5 if it’s protection), 2 stacks of might, +1-2% damage, and can cleanse as well, I wouldn’t call it bad.
You can’t judge a skill without the relevant traits and sinergies and just dismiss them because one of the effects is “random”.
