my experience is that 1v1 against a good bunkerish d/d ele its a matter of who makes the least mistakes. they generally aren’t able to burst me down and neither am I except when they get me with their knockdown combo (rtl + fire ring + churning earth) -which is easy to avoid- or when I get them with confusion which is also easy to avoid.

a couple of weeks ago we had a 2v2 against 2 d/d eles which was really tough. it ended up in a back and forth between spawns that lasted hours, with a number of randoms joining on either side but mainly just and my guardian buddy against those 2 eles. at some point towards the end we finally fought each others in a clean 2v2; they both targeted me and we both targeted the squishier one. now, my friend is an awesome guardian who can take a ton of damage but unfortunetly they didnt hit him at all and he couldnt do much but spam dodges near me for heals as he struggled to even catch them melee.
eventually (and bare in mind this was an extremely long fight) I managed to take one down and the other quickly died afterwards, that double cleansing was making it very tough. what I ended up doing was wait for a low hp opening, stack all the confusion I could and then stun with supply crate just as it ended. ofc, he would try to rtl away but if you pay attention you can start casting magnet as soon as they switch to air and pull their rtl back to you.
it took alot of focus and I was near death often but we pulled it off. I havent had such a tough fight.. ever.

yes, it was indeed tapsss, that one I beat like 5-2 if I recall correctly. the ele was tougher, I was running C and runes of aventure at the time which didnt really help me againt him. Against tapsss I experimented with pain inverter and it was nasty :p I
’m sure I could do better against mogwow now with my current spec but who knows, maybe he can too :p

heh, I had the chance of fighting mogwow and his thief buddy (not sure if that one, but it was an asura too) and mogwow beat me twice. I wasn’t using an ideal spec tho, I want my revenge!

I wouldn’t worry to much about us doing confusion, Mesmers can pack even more. People just need to have condition removal.Mask if you want you could go 15/15/10/30/00. I know you like that defensive stealth on immobilize.

P.S. if you want to try this out buy the rabid gear from the vendor if you have a ton of badges.

Nah, I’m sticking to my build , I just use pizza now and a giver’s weapon. swapped some stuff around, now using full carrion armor, and 2 rampager earrings instead of one. lost some toughness and power, got some vit and that 50% duration while still keeping my 70% boon duration.
so far it seems to work great.

and yes, I have the same issues with investing in condition duration, any decent group (or player) will have cleanses thrown around greatly reducing the potential damage. with giver’s weapons I can get 50% increase without really sacrificing anything, just some power.

I’ll be honest, the primary reason I attend these forums any less then I used to is because of the pessimism around here that I feel is unjustified when looked at in a mature and rational way. I understand where it comes from, but I think it’s absolutely silly and makes me feel ashamed to be apart of this community sometimes. it gets frustrating, as I said before. theres people in here whose opinion I respect alot and like to read what they say/think like ayestes, goloith, crispeh, kardiamond, siofra, amadeus among others, but even you guys seem to have stopped posting as often. I made a promise to myself to stay away from all the negative threads as I feel most of them add nothing of value.

I look at the mesmer forums and you see Osicat’s thread. Great guy, awesome player (I’ve had the priviledge of running with him or seeing him play a few times), 10 thousand + views, sticky thread, a legion of followers.
Then I look at our own forums and Amadeus’ thread (who is just as skilled and has just as much knowledge of the class as osicat) is buried in the 3rd page. And whenever he posts trying to explain something to someone more negative he gets shot down. It’s mind-boggling, maybe I’m missing something^^
also, this post might have some nonsense around, I just ran 10km and I’m way more out of shape than I thought, pleas excuse me while I pass out.

well, this is a double edged sword for us, because we engies can have pretty high uptimes on retaliation.
it could use some fine tuning sure, I don’t use grenade kit often but I’ve experienced the same when shooting p1 from towers, getting 2k+ damage on me per shot. It could probably use a cap on how many hits you can get from retaliation per second (or per skill) but I’m not really sure about it.

better yet, just have it all the time. add in some strobe lights too.

I avoid rolling with a zerg like the plague :<
but regarding flamethrower what I do sometimes is equip out of combat it for a moment just to have incendiary ammo on then switch back to toolkit. I’m too lazy to do i t everytime, too much of micromanagement, but its fun for ganks :p

cloaking device helps against melee too, especially if you are moving when they immobilize you. it also messes up alot of combos that require targeting. also, the duration on the stealth is often longer than the immobilize itself.

I’m using one giver’s and pizza now, +50% duration.
I’m using full carrion armor and switched an earring to rampager. I did lose some toughness but also got some vit back. It’s working fine so far.

your build is well done, very similar to mine. I would drop elixir C since you already have 409.
tell me something tho, are you looking for advice regarding pve or wvw?

if you just want to improve your dps in pve, drop C and maybe slot in bombkit. Myself, I use elixir gun for pve, wont boost your dps but has very useful skills especially in dungeons.
if its a wvw thing I’d advise you to put toolkit in there and get rid of blood injection, fast acting elixirs or potent elixirs will work better imo and also give you a boost to mobility due to permanent (in combat) swiftness.

about backdraft, I wasn’t aware it gave burning too back then, I stand corrected. I still think it would be too much considering how stuff works right now.

also, you said nothing about this suggestions being for spvp or in general.

I agree with kardiamond completely.
Our gadgets, flamethrower and turrets seem to be the only options lacking atm. We are fine otherwise compared to the other classes, we don’t have any more broken/useless stuff than most others, I’d say the exception is probably mesmer which is very good regardless (scepter still feels awkward to use for me) and guardian.

I think you went overboard with alot of stuff, many of those changes would not be balanced at all. prybar deserves a nerf as it is yet you want it to hit 3 targets? 5 seconds of aoe burn (on a pull!) for the flamethrower, would be 10 with 100% duration, combined with IA, way too much :p
there’s other clearly op stuff in there, but I’ll move along to the pistols:
while having them pierce by default wouldn’t be gamebreaking (check mesmer gs1), you want to completely ruin glue shot. it’s strenght (imo) is the ability to be shot backwards to delay chasing enemies. making it a cone would destroy its current use.

it’s good that you felt like contributing your ideas, I’m not trying to diss you, but you should keep it realistic and balanced.

Yes, I am very happy with the balance done so far myself.

More and more options opened up for us with each new balance patch, I was pretty confident about my engie back in october-september but it’s so much better now all around.
I have mained an engie since the last bwe and I never felt so strong. Nor was I so respectful (I really mean afraid) of other engies I met in combat, even those with wildly different builds than my own.
Going back to october we had one mildly good kit, grenade kit. Now we have one that needs some work -flamethrower- while all the rest is pretty good with toolkit bordering on the op and maybe needing a nerf.

I have 3 other level 80 toons and a 4th on the way. I play them all as much as possible especially when I feel bored, but if I want to “win”? I get the engie. If my buddies want to win? they will ask me to log on the engie.

Now, I admit, my point of view is mainly regarding wvw and the occasional pve, I gave up on playing on tpvp months ago so I won’t comment on that part of the game.

check amadeus builds and vids, he has a talent for experimentation and do tell me if such builds were possible 5 months ago and if we were really that worse off.

it seems to me every single patch, people focus on the one nerf (which wasn’t even a nerf, more of a much needed revamp) and declare it’s the end of the engineering world, while ignoring all the buffs and dismissing them as minor because they don’t use them.

it gets tiring; why bother to even read the forums if all you see are big walls of lamentation text, instead of new builds, new ideas, etc.

I know there’s alot of engies that feel lke I do and avoid posting in these forums for the very same reason and I end up having private conversations about new builds with 5 good engies at the same time without asking for any (but very grateful for them!) because we can’t really have them on the forums before they get buried in negativity and derail into pipe dreams of 5 second bleed explosive shots and sniper kits.

now specificaly regarding the KR change: it’s a 10 point trait; I never thought of using it for anything except maybe grenade barrage; now I look at the medkit, elixir gun and bomb kit and see that it clearly has potential and I could change some stuff around in my build and use those with success. I know some of you relied on kr for condition removal but we do have other (more than one) options.

rant over, sorry about that, I didn’t mean to sound aggressive or offensive, it’s just my opinion.

there’s nothing wrong with 100% duration, it’s very good, I know amadeus will wreck stuff up even more with his builds for example.

it’s a risk vs reward thing. going full out condition duration will present a risk (not taking full advantage of the durations) vs a reward (destroying those who suffer all the ticks, having more time to kite and play defensively while your conditions eat away)

I’m happy with 50% for myself mainly because I mostly run solo or in a duo/trio against large numbers and the boon duration runes help me stay alive and gain momentum in larger fights.

and I do use +100% duration on my necro as I feel its more worth it for the build I use there.

I did some duels at the fs mill on saturday. duels are not my thing, I prefer roaming. still, it was fun, I only got beaten 3 times by 3 different mesmers who lost the majority of times anyway, I ended up staying there for hours because everyone wanted to duel and re-duel me, being the only engie and one of the few (the only?) non thief/mesmer/warrior/ranger around.

they did lack discipline and also underestimated me and the piken duo. those were 3 way fights so it might have contributed-

my targeting order changes wildly depending on what I’m facing but in very generally is :

level 80 thieves -always, even if you were about to kill someone else
players who stray too far from their group
sub 80s, mainly eles, thieves, rangers and mesmers (that upleveled green arrow on the real mesmer is priceless) but not guardians
staff eles
anything at less than 50% hp
anything with cof gear
d/d eles unless they are tanky
rifle warriors, melee ones are kiteable, longbow is easily avoided
bow rangers but not the melee ones and not the tanky ones
melee warriors
engineers
mesmers
necros (depends heavily on their build and signets)
guardians

actually as I type this I realize it’s more a matter of targets meeting a number of criteria than a straight priority thing, except for thieves :p
obviously alot of times someone will present themselves as a better target either by having low hp or by going too far from the main group; the inverse also happens when someone is just too tanky or knows when to disengage. if that happens its better to switch targets as soon as you realize it.
regarding necros: sometimes, mainly when I’m in a group, they are the first target (if no thief!) due to their signets or general build. if they run plague signet or spite + epidemic they need to be dealt with first so they dont have many chances to use those.

incidently, I find that (p/p) engineers are great target callers/main assists due to locking a target down with confusion and poison and having a privileged position in a fight, something my other 80 toons aren’t so great for.

and no, you cannot cast elixirs while stunned, only S and R which are stunbreakers.
most might stacks come from HGH, a trait in the alchemy traitline which gives 2 stacks of might per elixir consumed (1 on tosses). I also use a might on crit sigil (sigil of strength) and I run with +70% boon duration atm which allows for increased stacks of might too.

don’t go all pessimistic till you see how exactly it is. right now the ability to stack multiple long duration boons is somewhat broken since there’s no real counter to it.

Spinal shivers and mesmer clones/gs 3 are about the only good ones I can recall. null field and the necro well require the target to stand on them and will only convert one boon at a time a far as I know (not sure if null field works like this).

I’m all for making boon removal skills more appealing even though I play a boon heavy build on my engie.

if that story doesn’t get the bug fixed, I don’t know what will!

Ok, so:
Boons have their importance keeping me up, relatively long protection and permanent regeneration help alot but swiftness is just as important.

Another thing is having the timings right and know when to engage/disengage a foe and who to kill first. My heal is on a 20 seconds cooldown. During those 20 seconds I can have 6 seconds of immunity, 3-4 dodges and 2 snare puddles. While you have these up and ready, the fight is under control, once those are used it’s generally time to disengage. If you notice I don’t run away at 25% hp, I start disengaging when I get focused by more than 2-3 guys -or when stuff goes wrong and I need to reset the fight- so when I eventually run away I’m at times at low hp but Im not taking damage anymore. Also notice that when attacking unprepared enemies you have a window of a 3-4 seconds before everyone reacts and attacks you, so if I haven’t done what I wanted before that, it’s time to get out. With some luck, someone will follow me and be killed.
and having 409 means Im pretty much immune to conditions except when many are dumped at the same time which means no long cripples, chills, vulns, immobilizes, etc.

@Mrforz Asura also have problems at times with being too small, especially melee characters, it’s hard to see your own character sometimes.

All this fights took place in 30-40 minutes, I cut the walking around part, I also cut the part where I die to that Piken engie and guardian duo mainly because it took forever, it was 5 mins of prybars to the face between engies and the guardian going down and back from spawn again. I just felt like mentioned for the sake of truth and because that engie deserved credit.
Anyway, this is 30 mins cut down to 14 of walking around in my shoes solo in wvw.

If you enjoy it half as much watching it as I did fighting them, I’m happy.

(nothing changed about my build, feel free to inquire about stuff but most was probably answered in previous movie threads by me -I’ll add links when I feel less lazy)

I get it, I’ve struggled with those decisions too. rifled barrels and coated bullets are not mandatory in this build, I like them both tho. p2 also benefits from coated bullets, and I like that trait especially to deal damage to clusters of enemies and people reviving, also dealing double damage with p1 when shooting from above/max range. rifled barrels is a good trait to have when chasing someone or skirmishing a large group, the more room you have to kite when they all start chasing you, the better. not to mention tower/keep defense offense.
Like I said they are not mandatory traits and they are not valuable in every situation, but this is a wvw roaming build which I use to great success.

and I do have permanent swiftness while in combat, no need for invigorating speed. I run with +70% boon duration and elixir B/H/hidden flask/toss B, guardian boons, check my videos and u’ll see.

heh, maybe I explained myself wrong, 2v6 is about the upper limit of people we can fight at the same time too. Any more than that and we kite away. We do, however, engage groups of 20+ and manage to survive and kill a few while kiting them away from the main group, who soon tires of the chase and turns around. We then go back for more :p

it’s not discontinued, you just can’t buy them with gold at the trading post, only with tokens/drops from Ascalonian catacombs.

x4 altruism should work, no need to explain the obvious pros and cons I guess :p

it does not clear conditions you have ticking but it does prevent you from taking new conditions since you evade all attacks (unlike warriors or rangers invulns).

@ op, regardless of how you spec, remember you shouldn’t go anywhere near berserking glass cannon just because your duo buddy is tanky. sooner or later you will get focused and you need every bit of survivability you can get, especially against thieves who will, generally, avoid attacking the guardian. I’m referring to 2vmany obviously.

I think I can answer you just fine, I’ve been duoing with a guardian buddy almost all the time last few weeks and it goes amazingly great. Just this morning, for example, we were attacking two different groups of 20+ opponents kiting and going back, killing a few at a time, sometimes one of us would die but we were never both downed at the same time.. we did this for 3h without wiping, got about 80 badges. We were pulling such insane fights that soon we started getting whispers about the other server’s map chat being filled with WTF, HOW COME THEY DON’T DIE WITH 20 HITTING THEM and similar.

Here’s how we run: I use my trusty p/p elixir+toolkit build, he uses shouts and cleric gear, perma vigor and heals on dodge. When stuff goes wrong and we need to run, we both have swiftness up pretty much constantly, I drop the 2 snare puddles (glue shot and box of nails), gear shield and elixir s if needed too. People tend to focus him more than me, partly because he is a huge norn and seems more menacing (thank you evolution) and partly because I’m tough to catch (cloaking device and toss S are good for this) most players giving up and focusing the slow moving monster.

bare in mind those are average fights for us, the best of the best I -sadly- cannot record with this pc but usually involve us humiliating large groups.

Good fights this morning at AR borderland, it was fun biting the heels of the piken zerg with a 3 man group.

and props to dalzone for giving us the best couple of fights we had all morning, you guys are hard to bring down, made us sweat.

altruism should work fin and so does rare veggie pizza. the reason I don’t use it is because I don’t want to lose 100 power. I might use pizza again if they fix givers weapons; even so I’ll be dropping 180 power and I’m not sure how to make up for it.

I know they have those skills, and I still say they have no real gap closers especially when compared to a guardian or a thief or even to a melee ranger; they have the hardest of times catching up to someone who kites, let alone someone who actively cripples/chills them. They are generally the lowest priorioty target together with guardians for my groups, guardians for a whole different reason of course.

I know wvw is not just about 1v1 or small group skirmishes but when something like this happens you can’t say warriors are a “finished class” or better overall than engies.
thats not a one time thing either, it happens all the time even on my engie. they are tougher on my thief tho, I’ll grant you that.
