about perplexity, I dueled a very good engie yesterday and it was very very tough when he got an interrupt in but I still won most fights once I adapted a bit and payed more attention. Ended up 5-3 for me or so. Like I said, while I still believe a nerf is required, its not exactly auto win :p

I use that on my guardian as i stated up on the thread with traited shouts i can remove 2+1(transformed to boon) per shout, problem here is lasts combat +1 or 2 seconds, the reward of playing Bunker condi stats is more than you think.

No matter how conditions you remove the number of conditions and damage you take is always far superior to the conditions you can remove or heal.

note: i remove about 5 to 16 stacks of each conditon after use one or 2 shouts i still have the same amount of conditions due the number of conditions aplyers i am fighthing.

and what exactly is the problem there? you shouldn’t be immune to all conditions all the time.
thats like crying you just got hit by a warrior, healed up and then you got hit again and wtf no heal, nerf direct damage users.

every single class has condition cleanses available. Learning to prioritize what condies need cleansing and when, to time your condition removal, to take a breather when your cleanses are on CD, dodging the obvious condition overload skills, etc, thats what everyone means by l2p.

bunker condition specs won’t kill anyone competent either. you simply don’t have enough damage to kill good players who know what they do.

You don’t go carrion for the hp alone Conan. You get it for power and cd while getting a defensive stat. Sadly, you can’t get power/cd/toughness armor.

I used the runes the day after they were released, it worked well, but I didnt like how gimmicky it felt.

My experiences fighting people who use it have been hilarious. they keep expecting to win by simply stacking confusion, I’ve humiliated every single one of the guys I’ve seen use it. Today we had a 2v5 where 4 out of the 5 were using perplexity… 3 of them thieves, 1 mesm … and they still lost. In fact they lost so badly they swapped toons/builds after the 3rd defeat or so.

It’s a cheesy gimmicky rune set and it should be op… but all it takes is some paying attention. I stil think it deserves a cooldown, it doesnt make sense otherwise. on a related note, epidemic on those 25 stacks is hilarious :p

it ended up being an ok week, some fun fights against gum and naz.

with an elixir build, speedy kits are not necessary. minimum 17/30 seconds swiftness with my boon duration while out of combat, very close to permanent while in combat.

I also love the fact that he thinks carrion or rabid make condition builds tankier.

What’s the method to the madness in your gear choice though? Like, what setpoints/breakpoints were you aiming for, if any? I get the reasoning on the 40%-ish crit chance. Just trying to understand some of your choices is all.

I aim for 1500 power and 35-40% crit chance. From there I go towards 1350~toughness. Oddly enough I don’t really care for my condition damage value but I still get extremely high ticks.

I like having my pistol#1 hitting for about 400~damage each. I’ve gone full rabid and having my pistol shots hitting for 180~ was much more hindering than having lower toughness (which carrion mitigates by adding vit) and lower precision which as I explained is still more than enough. My bleeds will still hit for 115~completley unbuffed. Trying to beat a decent ele, thief or anyone running melandru+lemongrass with just condition damage is very very hard. Also, your poison and burns won’t stack damage with other sources so yoiu need to have some decent power to still be useful.

This is now a product of a year of trying gear and adjusting numbers, it’s actually slightly different now because Im using coated bullets so I changed a trinket or two. It’s also built for my needs which are solo roaming or small group vs large group (not my pov, but my group http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWwS03-qhcg ) .

I won’t say full carrion or full rabid don’t work, but for me, a mix is way better.
Just test stuff and reach values that you feel work, gear is easy to get nowadays with badges anyway :p

Conditions are fine, use cleanses, learn to play, seriously. Quit trying to dumb down the game because you can’t adapt or because something counters your build.

u dont really need more than 40% crit chance, it will be 60% most time anyway because fury has nice uptimes. that extra power will make more of a difference.

We had some fun times this match up, most elona didnt seem to want a figh tho.

Most better fights were against FSP, alot of smaller scale skirmishes with a variety of guys and guilds and assorted pug groups.

to that valur morgulis gr commander mesmer we fought almost every morning: I don’t mean to call you bad or anything but drop the berserker gear, you are a liability to your group that way.

to that AoA Champion warrior, well done, I got you on my engie but Im sure u’d wreck my thief if I was alone.

to that FSV mesmer scout with a staff, well done too.

to the elona guys we fought at ruins/briar a few times last 2 days: quit suiciding to get our catas, we don’t care for them. It’s not fun for u to die 8v3 like that and its not fun for us either if u dont even target us. 5-8 guys should be putting up a fight, not rushing catas and dieing to the first epidemic.

to fsp we fought today [nib] and others: it was alot of fun for us, someone from your server was telling us u were mad at us. don’t! we are good sports and never laughed or jumped on your corpses, no reason to be mad. that balista at longview was unnecessary tho.

tho definetly not a bunker spec.

most fun/success we’ve had as a 5 man :
1 or 2 guards, 1 mesm, 1 engie, 1 or 2 necros. can also have a s/d ele instead of the extra guard or necro.
we’ve beaten 20+ with this setup multiple times.

tbh it all depends on the players you have and what kind of synergies you have going. it also depends on where you are fighting. having or not a chokepoint can have a huge impact on how a fight goes.

I’ve found that multiple thieves are not good to have against bigger numbers, tho they can are good in a balanced fight. Shadow refuge is decent to escape zergs but it requires all 5 of you to stand in an aoe vulnerable spot and use stability. Mesmer’s mass invis/portal does the same job better.

funny story from a couple of days ago:

me and a buddy were skirmishing a zerg, at some point we got chased by 6-7 guys and we decided to focus the commander down and risk everything for a stomp. I get the stomp with elixir S at 300hp and I immediatly die. Some random guy comes for the stomp as my buddy tries to ress me, I use my perfectly timed #2 skill and what happens? nothing. turns out one of our opponents was a guardian with that ress bubble trait which absorbs projectiles, triggered when he tried to ress their commander. So my #2 skill got absorbed. And I got stomped.

Play clever, I have never had trouble with retal. They nerfed the damage by 50% it is fine now.

Go use an engi flamethrower on 2 guardians with retaliation. 8000 damage to yourself every auto attack….

thats the exact opposite of clever play. why would you ever use autoattack on flamethrower except for exploiting through keep doors, and why would you use it against guardians.

yes, please make it so people can spam mindless aoe some more.

I use that solo and in small groups of up to 5 players. It depends greatly on your group setup tho, good coordination with a necro with epidemic is devastating with this build and others.
but then you also need someone to keep the heals and/or boons flowing and that can be ur role as an engie too, with a different spec than the one above.

Dxtory. It has alot more options than fraps and it’s alot less heavy on the system. With it I manage to record gw2 footage using a dual core, completely impossible with fraps.

Raw captures are bigger tho (something like 70gbs for 15 mins), but it comes with its own conversion software, extremely simple to use (2 clicks and its done) so you can store the rawcaptures you wish to keep in a .avi file without wasting much hdd space.

I’m not sure why people associate roaming with dueling so much. I solo roam alot but I don’t do it to get some 1v1s. I can faceroll 90% of those and win. I can’t even recall the last time I lost a 1v1 out in the open. If I want good duels I’ll ask in a dueling guild… and change my roaming build to a 1v1 build because they are not the same thing.

I solo roam to fight against the odds, to find a group of 2-3-4 guys and show them how it’s done. I can do that on my engie better than I can do on my thief.

if it’s any consolation, a fight between a condi engie and a warrior should only really go one way. not much you could do :p your team could have supported you better tho!

at this point in the game, complaining about thieves makes little sense to me. heartseaker was nerfed. mug was nerfed. quickness was nerfed. larcenous strike was nerfed, infiltrators strike was nerfed. I remember how it worked before, and thieves were still easy to beat.

contrary to what is said around the forums, you will see most of the thieves comming at you, just like any other class, if you pay any attention to whats going on. you can very easily avoid their opener. you can very easily kite them or make them waste their initiative chasing you. you can dodge cloak and dagger. you can stop their heartseaker into black powder. shadow refuge = free revealed debuff for alot of classes and specs. if you can’t punt them out of refuge, run the other way. you can reset the fight just as a thief can.

it’s true, thieves don’t have a high skill ceiling, but that also means that they are very easy to counter, as are most classes once you figure them out. and thief is probably the easiest one to figure out how to counter.

I dislike how so many decisions regarding balance in this game are made for skill clicking slow to react casuals, such as confusion, retaliation and quickness nerf and an overall reduction on burst damage. I understand why they make such decisions, but I dislike it. The last thing this game needs is more dumbing down.

thieves are fine at this point. any thief that can kill you in 3 seconds, dies in 3 seconds.
sword needed some toning down, which it got. black powder + heartseaker is a cheesy no risk stealth move, but it burns so much initiative you shouldn’t be worried about getting killed afterwards. just run the other way while counting to 4.

but in the end, devs will probably give in to the constant whining again and nerf something that was not really an issue any more, while stupidly op stuff goes unchecked.

a few good fights as a tchuu-bt mixed party this afternoon at fsp bl:

against FSV, we won the first time 4vs7-8 against your melee hammer train, but then you kept getting more numbers and it was too tough, and while we got 5, you grew to 15ish or so. still some decent fights, they were fun, although almost impossible for us to win.

against WdR: fun stuff, but kitten , stop focusing me! :<

So think our guild decided to move to the top half tiers. We run a legit 5 man everynight, wanted to get some opinions about how ACTUAL small man fighting is in top tiers. And I dont mean running around with 10 to take zergs.,…I mean how many small mans will we come across daily? the server my group plays since launch was always between t3 and t6. We have fought maybe half a dozen organized small groups similar to ours. in 10 months.
It’s not that they don’t exist, I can count at least 3 well known in my server alone, it’s just that most groups like this will actively avoid their own zerg, avoid the home BL and EB and that makes it hard to come across each other.

Thieves are broken. I rolled one myself to learn to counter one and found out that Thieves just have such a huge benefit from just having rolled that profession its silly.

I am by no means a good Thief, i only very recently got to 80 and went into WvW. Yet, last night i defeated 3 Thieves in WvW solo. No, they were not upleveld. And it all became clear.

Simple. Most Thieves are just terrible at this game. Absolute rubish. And that explains all the “ow i kill thieves all the time in WvW” we see. If you build to be very durable, or are skilled and have a good reaction time to counter an opening, yah you beat them. Because 9 out of 10 Thieves dont know what to do when theyr insta-gib fails.

That doesnt excuse the fact that any idiot can press two buttons and essentially gib someone. But countering this play takes a great deal more skill and experience. Its no where near the same level of play.
Just because something can be countered by being a much better player doesnt mean its balanced, infact it means the opposite.

the thing is classes and builds are at a different balance state depending on the skill level.

at a lower skill level, a thief will demolish other similarly low skilled players, who generally have lower reaction times, panic, mouse click their skills, have less than ideal builds and gear, especially for a 1v1, and don’t even use a stunbreaker.

at a higher skill level things go the other way around. thieves lose all their apparent power. everyone knows how to counter a thief, players know how to avoid the opener, when to dodge cloak and dagger, when to stun or immobilize and burst, make their shadow refuge useless. in small groups (5 or less, not 1v1) it gets even worse because thieves will instantly get focused and cc’d everytime they go out of stealth and alot of times they die without even getting a hit off.

same thing happens with zomg zerker warrior rifle killshots 20k+ dmg!!11!.

the last time I got beaten by a thief in a 1v1 with any of my toons was a couple of months ago, against a s/d boon stealing thief, on my engie, in an organized duel. There was no crazy ammount of burst, those don’t kill anyone who understand the game. the fight took well over 2 mins and eventually he got me.

Now with thief sword slightly nerfed things went my way again, although it still is crazy close and I need to spam less elixirs.

my opinion anyway.

thats not one second and he’d die in 3 hits if you had reacted.

thieves are not as good as people make them to be, I can’t remember the last time a thief killed me, especially not a d/d one.
