I was originally hoping for some long range AOE’s with our staves. It seems like that is something Ranger is missing since Barrage is really our only option in that area.
I fell in love with ranger from the GW2 barrage skill video (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ranger/) but unfortunately it doesn’t feel as satisfying in game :\ I wish we had more skills like that
I think druid was the most successful elite in delivering on actually offering a different style of play for the profession. In that it is different from base ranger not everyone will enjoy the new style which is fine they can still play base ranger problems arise when every other professions elites where merely strait upgrades on the base profession . In my opinion druid is what an elite spec should be and the problem lays with other elites .
I completely disagree. I think reaper and chronomancer were the true standard of what elite specs should be. And of course, they were among the first specs released, with the most time spent on them. The reception to both those elite specs was unequivocally better, and the player feedback and development time were clearly a result. Feedback lead to huge gameplay changes which allowed people who play the spec to be a part of the development. Ranger was the last released spec and of course got the least feedback, so the lack of development is clear.
I guess you’re talking about the scythe blade that appears when you cast staff skills? That’s been on the staff weaponset for a while now, I don’t imagine they’d change it.
They might just be asking if they’d remove it from that weapon for graphical reasons, which I’d still be interesting in seeing
I know things have definitely gotten off topic…but I absolutely find solace in the fact that a lot of people share the same discomfort. I should have made a poll :P
Vid/gif please?
I’d recommend something similar, but I’d say dagger/warhorn + staff. Dagger is very high DPS, and warhorn provides some extra damage, along with swiftness which is key as you are exploring. The daze is helpful but not extremely in low level areas. Staff is good for tagging mobs, and has a bit of utility as well. That and deathshroud give you some nice ranged options. Stats wise I’d aim for berserker at all times (power/precision/ferocity), as it gives the highest damage (big numbers = fun) and isn’t as squishy, so it teaches you to get better at using dodges/skills/skill to survive. Trait lines is sometimes a toss up for people, but I unlocked in this order: Spite, Soul Reaping, Blood Magic. Traits can be up to personal preference. At 80 though, builds really start to come together.
As a reaper, stability is absolutely not overpowered. If you want to kill a reaper just kite them..
Yep, Ranger got the short end of the stick on this one.
So suggestions:
1. Immediate +30% damage output on bow(long and short) across all attacks.
2. Traps should actually trap, like dragon hunter and should do more damage than theirs. We are supposed to be the masters of the wild.
3. Stealth detection and targeting ability. We’re supposed to be trackers and hunters. Our pets should aid in this. Especially dogs sense of smell and cats good hearing.
4. Sniper elite shot. Similar to mordrem snipers.
5. DPS increase, period.I’ll say it again. The theme of our class is an adventurer type that uses the forces of nature to fight his battles. Some sort of sneaky death sniper fits the thief far better than the ranger, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get LB on the next expansion. I like LB (love it actually), but the elite specs where about expanding the classes into new areas. Druid did that (admittedly some parts of the execution could be improved). This sniper idea that alot of people (not just you) keep talking about would just be doubling down on a weapon we already have, and turning us into thieves tbh.
If the thief got the kind of sniper/trapper we are hypothetically discussing here that would be the final straw for me – I’d end up abandoning my ranger once and for all.
I actually feel robbed by two minor traits “Live Vicariously” and “Natural Mender”, which are kinda useless in sPvP if you’re not specing into healing or not running staff.
Solo play as well. Two minor traits that could have provided some noticeable benefit, are otherwise useless when playing alone.
Imagine if Chronomancer allowed for Continuum Split (F5) but sacrificed one (or a few) of the shatter skills in it’s place? Then mesmers would all cry out that (rightfully) mechanics have to be sacrificed to play the new elite spec. So why does reaper forcefully replace an existing mechanic? Isn’t the point of the elite specs to unlock more mechanics?
I’m confused, what’s the difference between this and asking someone to post their build?
Taking my leave now.
Great
Wait..when was guard not meta? PVP/PVE/WVW/Fractals guardian has always been comfortable. With all the focus on guard I don’t think it’s dropped below top 1/3 since launch
snipping all this out…
Again, clearly you disagree with this thread and you are a strong proponent for druid. The two options here are you can accept that not everyone enjoys druid and want to discuss the fact they dislike it, or you can hijack my thread and defend every aspect of druid until the end of time. Please, move on.
Of course we were robbed relative to others.
What single other elite spec is so one dimensional to the point where its main weapon, the elite mechanic, and most of the traits are tied to a healer role?
Any other elite spec has a variety of compatible playstyles. Druid is JUST a support spec, period. So rangers who rolled the class not wanting to play support got screwed, as EVERYONE got a power spike from elite specs except ranger, who was shoved into being a heal/buffbot.
You’re acting like I can just choose core ranger and be brought to a raid for just DPS. Don’t be dumb about it, core ranger is horrible, never has been a desirable DPS spec.
So in terms of the meta, as a ranger you are a druid and play a support class, or you don’t get brought to endgame PvE at all.
Ranger already saw a lot of hate in dungeons/fractals pre-HOT and now especially with the druid elite spec I think rangers have a much lower rate of securing slots in parties because they chose not to spec druid. It’s a sad state of affairs. “Here rangers, now you will be more valued in parties! But wait, you have to use this trait line you may or may not have an interest in…and if you don’t -your value in parties will actually decrease instead of staying where it is!”

I have loved the idea of condition reaper but last time I tried it out was around the time of launch. I haven’t been on my reaper as much as I like, so needless to say I’m a bit out of the loop. Could someone link me an example reaper condi build for pve? I’ve seen a lot more people mentioning it, I take it it’s more viable than it was before
It is undeniable that the druid is aimed towards healers, and though it can be used offensively it means you still sacrifice heavily for it. For a non-healer, the minor traits are worthless. The major traits themselves are again clearly catered towards support/healing. Yes, there are some combinations that are somewhat offensive, but the opportunity cost of taking druid over a different traitline is too high to be worthwhile.
Druid is aimed at “supporting”. Both offensive and defensive. Personal included.
What exactly do you heavily sacrifice for it? Bountiful hunter which is like 5% damage increase in PvP and roughly 8% in PvE? Beast Mastery that increases your overall DPS by roughly 6% and is only taken as a Swiftness/Regen bot for druid into PvP?Am I mistaking anything? Or are you probably talking about Wilderness Survival ? I don’t know. For this whole time I didn’t have to sacrifice anything.
I could become a dedicated Beast Master. I was granted reposition tool and CC for Marksman Zerk game-play. I gained new options of being an extreme utility support for PvP. I was able to gain a lot more sustain for Condi Builds. You sound like a spoiled Gamer to me. Because you didn’t get a sniper elite specialization. Even though your beloved marksman got buffed by druid in every aspect.
If you don’t like it – don’t play one. It’s not a class you have to play. What bothers me is it’s absurd and horrible design, bugs, clunky mechanics and core mechanic without a single second of thought or logic put into it.
It made us competitive and better in every single game mode but it’s not really enjoyable – is what my concern is.
This thread isn’t to argue every aspect of druid – it is about the fact that I felt cheated, and was wondering if others agree. We can both that agree you disagree with my thread. It is time for you to move on.
I was infinitely disappointed by druid. Behold, the holy trinity has been complete! You wanted an offensive elite spec? Sorry, we reserved those for guard/warrior/revenant/engineer/thief/mesmer/necromancer/elementalist. What is the state of Dragon Hunter in PVE? I like the longbow and trap archetype (you guys stole the perfect ranger elite :P ) and I am considering rerolling just for DH..
For lack of a better word, it feels flaccid.
Very accurate, and the word choice paints a lovely mental picture. Axe just feels bland and empty. Many weapons (depending on profession) are fun, practical, and visually pleasing. The axe is just practical for niche ranged damage situations…that is it. As far as I’m concerned the only real use for axe is the Underground Facility fractal to infinitely walk backwards and awkwardly slash the air.
How can you feel robbed by something that takes absolutely nothing away from the core ranger?
Everything that makes a ranger a ranger is still there even if you spec as a druid and the whole thing is as simple as changing trait lines around in the hero menu.
Nothing gets taken away from the ranger for the sake of the druid spec. Rather, it adds to the rangers repertoire.
Getting a new thing to play with isn’t robbery. I’d think that’s quite the opposite of being robbed?
You’re not familiar to opportunity cost, are you?
What they felt robbed was of an elite spec that enhanced the mediocre offensive capabilities of the ranger and gave them a weapon with powerful aoe (which rangers don’t have).
Druid as an elite spec is a DPS neutral utility sidegrade to the ranger that comes with a mechanic that’s all about healing, which many players didn’t roll ranger for.
This is very accurate of my thoughts. The druid traitline gives me very little in my playstyle, in fact it caters to just a few playstyles. I did not choose ranger to be a healing buffbot/afk healing fairy. The feeling of being “robbed” comes from the fact that druid is such a one-sided elite spec that it means that for all intents and purposes, there is no ranger spec for me to work for. I absolutely expected something offensive like Dragon Hunter, and Druid is the complete opposite. An elite spec with powerful long ranged abilities and deadly traps? YES! I would love that…but oh wait, I’d have to give up on ranger and roll a guardian to get it.
Haven’t deviated away from the bow in fantasy RPGs since I can remember, I’m drawn to it with every MMO I encounter. Got bored of the trinity system and couldn’t believe my luck when I found GW2 and started the beta.
Now everything I despise and have actively avoided in games and my choice of class has landed slap bang on my doorstep. Didn’t even bother buying the expansion, going to try elsewhere now (unless something happens months down the line).
While I haven’t moved away from GW2 I share the same sentiment. I love the bow and arrow archetype and am usually drawn to it in RPGs. One of my favorite things about GW2 was that party slots weren’t dedicated to healers. Some classes/builds healed more than others, but there wasn’t even the remote thought of saving spots exclusively for healers because it wasn’t truly an option. Now the trinity has been completed and it is incredibly disappointing.

Did you type this on your phone?
Don’t feed the troll
I know it has been said a million times but I still would have much rather had the Dragon Hunter spec over Druid. It makes so much more sense and it would give me a reason to use the long bow I otherwise ignore. I love my reaper and thematically it fits so well, Druid doesn’t feel as “right” to me.
Not trying to generate even more hate for druid, I’m just wondering how many people are in the same boat as myself. Looking at my current ranger I feel using the druid spec would be a waste of my 3 trait lines, and as much fun as I am having with HoT I don’t feel like I have as much to work towards as other specs. As someone who has no interest in completing the “holy trinity” and being a healer it essentially means there is no ranger elite spec for myself (and others who think this way). It feels like the other elite specs aren’t as one-sided as druid, about how many of you out there are sticking to core ranger? I myself am loving pure melee ranger
Channeled skill..same thing as spacial surge (mesmer GS1), I have a screenshot around here of 200ish thousand damage, just for ha ha’s..
This game does need damage meters. I reckon people would be shocked at the results and how far off the spreadsheets were.
I agree. It’s funny how ludicrous it is there are some people who think their build does anywhere NEAR 20,000 damage per second. It literally doesn’t make any logical sense.
So we’ve got 2 condi clears (heal + staff) but that still doesn’t seem to be enough on demand clear to deal with any condi builds. What have you guys been doing to counter condi builds as a power reaper?
Soldiers gear + staff 4 + Plague Signet. Tank conditions when you can, send them when you have to
Great, so GW2 is broken
Not necessary together (though why not), how are these two weapons in PVE now? I just finished my reaper spec and I am gearing up now. I haven’t touched either of them since about level 20, and that was way before any of the changes. I’ve been so used to dagger/warhorn + staff (now dagger/warhorn + GS) that I’m curious because a change could be fun. So what’s everyone think, have these been improved at all and are they worth taking? I’m running a power build with soldiers/zerk and focusing on end-game content.
Pets don’t aggro on their own
Pets aggro when hit, and keep attacking unless you run far enough away. Mobs get aggroed when they see you and therefore try to hit you, and the fact that minionmancers often have a cloud of minions following means you have a much higher hitbox. So, the fact that you have a larger hitbox and minions mindlessly keep attacking even when their master has left means that it keeps one in combat longer than necessary.
wondering whats a good starter build to a necro that doesnt have all the gold in the world to buy gearsets :P
Some mobs in the jungle just eat me alive atm :<
Valkyrie + zerk trinkets is a good safe bet. Runes up to you
Take your favorite elementalist build, and test out your REAL DPS in a fight of your choosing, you don’t have to tell me what it is… because i already know it… i know all the values, all the real HP values and so on…
By testing “real dps” you mean people should go to pvp and hit invulnerable golem couple of times?
And thus you see the strawman argument crafted by every elitist here. Not only are the numbers blown out of proportion, they calculate their magical fairy DPS in a mystical world that is nothing more than make believe.
It’s worth stating that when I said that reapers could reach near 18k dps, that was under near optimal conditions. Stationary non interacting target, all debuffs already applies, perfect skill usage with optimal damage utilities, berserker gear, and the target below 50% health so all our damage modifiers kick in. Still stand by that value, but it should not be taken out of context and treated as the average fight dps, which is going to be significantly lower.
Posts like these are equal to that of the “20k DPS ele” posts: they are useless. They are misleading and false. Not only is that number not achievable in any realistic scenario, the numbers aren’t even close. Because of these falsified posts people look at 10k DPS as weak compared to other classes, when other classes DPS is actually much closer to 10k DPS than these “theorycrafters” make it out to be. It seems people don’t truly understand how utterly incorrect they are claiming something like engi does 20k+ dmg/second. I don’t agree with everything Nemesis says, but I definitely agree with the fact all these imaginary numbers are pure bullkitten.

I won’t see any silly multi-colored reaper hoods and I’m glad
Buuuuuut myyyyy faaaaaashion waaaaars.
I can see what you’re saying, but you could just dye both sections the same color if that’s what you wanted. For everyone else, they could dress the hood up.
I’m glad there is no option to “dress it up,” I like the hood exactly how it is.
It’s amusing to watch the golem lay people out. And, as a necro the limited access to good “anti break bar” skills make me pleasantly surprised when I see a chunk taken out by the golem’s active skill. “Did I do that?”
I guess there’s finally a use for self afflicted conditions..
I agree, it wouldn’t make sense with more than one color. As Bhawb said it’s like a rag, similar to a Nazgul rider hood. It looks perfect as is, of all the elite spec armor skins reaper takes the cake for best design
Gs 5 :
BW3 ~> 600 range and slow
Now ~> 750 range and pretty fastDidnt noticed something else atm but no any nerf thats a great new.
That was the main thing I noticed. The range was a much needed change. Now if we could only get the skill to stop clipping with the environment…
They’re all available to preview in the wardrobe..
Foes never learn they rather complain. What did you just do…?
I’m… not sure I understand the question. Rephrase?
Your scenario implies that you fought bad players, they will probably complain instead of finding out what they did wrong. It’s quite funny because I’ve killed reapers solo on my necro. Complaining does nothing but being an ex main thief-ish I hate the wrong kind of complaints.
He is having fun playing reaper, why must you cast a negative shadow over it?
Anyone else experiencing large delays on RS5? Damage and/or AOE field seem to come after 2 seconds after it hits…it doesn’t sync with the animation. Unrelated but I’ve also died to RS2 through a targeted enemy, it’s better, but not fixed :\
You can’t do that if your purpose is to raid and be at your best possible. If Dagger does more damage than Greatsword in a certain situation, you can’t use Greatsword, you are only keeping your team down. If everyone in your team was doing something off like you do, the loss of dps would just adds up, making a singular mistake into a collective dps loss.
You sound like the perfect of someone I wouldn’t want to raid with.
Reaper finally puts the class in a good place, and you’re already trying to take this away from people? The specializations aren’t even out yet, the fact that this is even a topic is absurd. We all know which classes actually need to be nerfed, and necromancer is sitting at the bottom of that list. We all know that Ele/Guard/Mesmer/Warrior are going to be buffed infinitely, while reaper will probably be nerfed to oblivion (source: the past few years) can you just let us enjoy the time period where Reaper is actually a great specialization? As much as it pains me to say it, what’s probably going to happen is this good spot Reaper is at right now will soon be a memory. The general pattern is that necromancer’s point out flaws in the class, wait for a solution to that, and then an entirely different aspect of necro gets nerfed.

@Ithir Darkleaf @spoj
Why. Why bother posting here at all. Are you guys that bored?
(Someone who just got home from work) What new camera system? o.O looks the same to me
Vamp runes saved him so many times. That rune set is becoming required for glassy builds.
I wonder if Speed of Shadows would have helped you? It seems you were almost always waiting on shroud cooldown. I know you’d lose Soul Marks but the 7 sec shroud cooldown is very nice.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. That cooldown reduction is crucial
I like the idea of corruptions, but they not strong enough to be worth it, and it takes too much investment from traits and utilities to transfer conditions reliably. Necromancer isn’t the king of conditions (I really wish it was) but how about at least make us the king of transferring conditions? Make conditions potent enough where I would actually want to slot another utility/trait just to transfer, or, give us some unique condition transfer.
As someone who interested in playing around on their ranger again, can you point me in the direction of said videos? The ones I’m finding are highlighting the issue with sword #1, not really a guide how to control it
