I was testing out Sigil of Battle, and I noticed it was only procing on Fire and Earth attunement. I’ll test it again when I get home to be sure. But, I noticed it wasn’t upon every attunement swap.

Thanks for the great help everyone. I switched a few things up using the suggestions listed above. I used this last night in sPvP and WOW what a difference it made:

It was very hard to kill me, and I felt like I was actually damaging people. The only classes that were giving me trouble were some killer thieves and some engineers; not all of them, there were just a few that seemed to be in god mode. Had a few fights with some mesmers and guardians that took an eternity and never really finished before other people joined the fight. Overall thought it was much improved, and was the play style I was looking for. Dodging with 30 Arcana was definitely key.

I found a calculator at work that lets you plug in your health and armor to determine how much damage you can take. It then suggests if you need vitality or toughness. The best compromise I could come up with,without sacrificing too much damage was to go with a soldiers amulet and a knights rune. According to the calculator this gave me an effective healthpool of 47k damage I could take.

I might tweek it a little more based on what majortato wrote. I hadn’t read his post yet when I created this.

Yeah I took like a four month break from GW2 and Rangers have been sooooooooo freakin annoying. I have no clue about anything Rangers, but there are some that take like no damage and still kill everything in site. Not a QQ but just an observation about them. I remember them sucking big time and being free kills in sPvP…not the case anymore.

Hey everyone,

First caveat: All my experience has been based on sPvP
Second caveat: My level of experience with elementalist is up to level 60
Third caveat: Been playing a Mezmer since release.

So I’m re-rolling as an elementalist because it seems like their play style is more fun. I like the concept of constantly “doing” something such as swapping attunements, setting up combos etc. I’ve been playing a Mesmer for a while and I LOVE that class too, but I just wanted to try something different. Plus, I think Elementalists can do well in any situation, whether it’s dungeons, gold farming, WvWvW, etc.

My problem is, I CAN’T SURVIVE ANYTHING!!.

I’ve tried Dark Phoenix’s D/D guide. I’ve tried going 30 earth/30 water with celestial, I’ve tried 30 fire 30 air with berzerkers. I cannot 1v1 anything. If i go more tough/vit then i just can’t do enough damage to kill anyone. The best approach I’ve found so far is just to say eff it; go full damage, and just put a hurting on someone before I’m get my own kitten beat down.

I try using all my cantrips: mist form, the blast that removes 3 conditions, and the earth one that grants stability (sorry can’t remember their names). I’ll switch to water to get two heals. It seems like it doesnt’ matter. If someone is hell bent on me I just delayed getting killed by about 10 seconds with those. I also use the ether heal that removes conditions and heals with each pulse.

In your most recent vid (bullet train) are you still using 0/20/25/0/25? I’ve been using that in sPvP and I still have a blast with it even after the patch. BTW lol’d at the commentary (hard to find the ctrl key and the 1 key to turn off auto attack). I run the 0/20/25/0/25 build using Staff::Sw/Pistol with Rabid and Geomancy / Agony on my weapons. Only time I ever get killed is when I have a persistent Thief that I didn’t get the jump on, or if I find myself surrounded by the entire opposing team.

I run Astus condition build 0/20/25/0/25 in sPvP with Staff & Sw/Pistol. I LOVE this build even after the confusion nerf. Usually I kill people 1v1, and when I can’t I use blink, decoy, and mass invisibility. I’ve had people chase me all the way across the map only for me to finally get annoyed enough to start fighting them, and then they realize they can’t kill me and then they run.

The only class I struggle with against this build are rangers and some engi’s. Every so often I come across a thief that tears me apart, but he still has to work for it.

Thanks for the tip crossplay!. The 2 being spammed is probably my problem.

BTW @Dastion every class has a pass from the first stomp. Guardians have knockback, Rangers have a daze, Necros have a fear, Engineers have a knockback, Warriors have a knockdown and they can temporarily rally, thieves have a port which has a kittenedly low cooldown. If they port at the last second it is hard for porting classes such as Mez and Ele to be able to react fast enough after locating where the thief ported to, and ele’s have a mistform. …….soooo…mezmers aren’t anything special in that regard.

Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong while in downed state. Everyone says that we have amazing abilities …but I’m not really seeing it. I get one pass out of being stomped, and then after that say bye bye. Here’s a few things that I’m struggling with.

I’ve noticed that sometimes ALL my abilities are on cooldown, even #2, as soon as I enter downed state. Are the cooldowns from my weapon skills carrying over into downed state?

I also feel really squishy in downed. I’m not glass canon spec’d either. It seems like my health bar in downed state will go from 100 to 0 in about 20 sec without people attacking me. I’m condition/toughness for the most part. I feel like other classes take an eternity to kill if you don’t stomp them. Me, I feel like I get killed in less than 5 sec. I don’t ever have time for the 3 ability to come off cooldown before I get killed.

So I’m just wondering, am I doing something wrong?

I took about a 4 month hiatus from GW2 and OMG!!! Did longbow Rangers get a buff?!?! They are sooooooo annoying. I know they were in huge need of a buff, so kudos to them, but OMG they make me e-rage in sPvP!!

Veil Light or Ethereal?

I did find it reported in the bug sticky for mesmers, but has dev ever stated whether the combo field for Veil should be Light or Ethereal? Right now it states Light in the tool tip, but it actually uses Ethereal. It would be nice if it were light, so it could be one more condition removal cooldown to throw on top of the iWarden.

Yeah I think it’s good to use iWarden as defense. It’s good for controlling where people stand. Many people recognized it and know that it brings a lot of pain if they stand within range of it. It’s even better if you’re in a tight area with a crowd of people. Love watching the numbers fly on that hing. So you can fight on top of it, and also lay down your temporal curtain on top for condition removal or Staff 5 to add some more confusion.

BTW it only reflects projectiles if you spec into inspiration right?

I think whoever is bragging about getting 100+ badges in one night is full of kitten. I think 10 in one night is pretty good. Sometimes I’ll play for a couple hours and only come out with 4. You do have to spam your F key constantly cuz the loot bags drop at your feet and are easy to miss. I have a guardian friend that said when she switched from support spec to GS, her number of badges increased drastically. So, maybe it’s the same concept of farming where you have to hit the mob, and you or your group has to do 10% of the total dmg.

I am by no means an expert at playing staff. I’m only level 41 and played d/d mostly. Back when I played my mesmer I remember a staff ele that was DESTROYING in sPvP. Basically whichever team had that elementalist would win the match. She just kept running around and laying down fields which basically made players decide between a hallway of death or running around the fields…which if they did that would never catch up to her.

One particular combo I saw, that I thought was effective was that she would run away and leave down Static field, after that Unsteady Ground followed by Eruption and then Lava Font. The thing I noticed about her is that she never stood still and always placed her fields between you and herself. Catching up to her was practically impossible and you were taking damage the whole time.

I was so impressed that the first time I did sPvP i tried out staff. I failed miserably. I don’t know what skills, traits, gear, etc she had. I wish she would pop up and make a staff guide the way darkphoenix made a d/d guide, because I think there is some great things you can do with staff in the hands of a skilled player. I’m not good at figuring things out on my own. …I have to rely on guides to teach me how to play well haha and there isn’t a tell all like darkphoenix’s d/d guide for staff users.

Hi Everyone,

My guild basically fell apart. No one plays the game anymore, and I still like playing, so I guess it’s time to look for another guild. I don’t like guild hopping. I like finding a tight knit group of people to play with. I used to only like doing PvP, but GW2 is one of the first MMOs where I love the PvE as much as the PvP.

Right now I’m a 35 ele. I started off with a Mesmer which is 80. I decided to reroll because the Mesmer class isn’t what I wanted it to be. I plan on doing a TON of AC dungeons. I want the gear from there. I also want to do map completion and work toward a legendary, so I’ll probably be down to join any dungeon group as I level. I’m kinda in between casual and hardcore. I put in a lot of hours when I actually sit down to play, but I’m also in grad school and work full time so there might be stretches of time where I have to be MIA or only log in long enough to do a few in-game chores. I like to study up on my class and play to the best of my ability. I frequent the forums and always tweak my character’s play style based on new findings.

As far as the type of guilds I prefer. I usually don’t deal well with “family” guilds, and I abhor spam guilds. If I drop an occasional f-bomb or swear word in guild chat I don’t want there to be a collective gasp followed by a reprimand for language. I understand being respectful, but at the same time I’m an adult and would like to speak to the same. I like a guild that socializes in vent or teamspeak. I feel like guilds that are active in voice chat have a better camaraderie, and work well together in groups.

Anyway, if you think I’m a fit for your guild, I’d love to hear from you. Right now I’m on Fort Aspenwood, but I’m willing to switch servers if the guild is the right fit.

Fyi, the delay on first attack has been present since BWE2. It is there for balance reasons to give enemies a moment to react to the powerful summon.

First off: thank you for giving an intended date on the fix for beserker.

Second off: your statement that the delay is there to give enemies a time to react to the summon makes 0 sense. An enemy can react to the summon of a phantasm by interrupting you, blinding you, stealthing, stepping our of range, or dodging you – thus denying the summon from being summoned and putting the skill on cooldown.

Do a comparison between the opening attack of a phantasm, and some of the other spike damage skills in the game. Then please show us some concrete reasons as to why the opening attack of a phantasm is considered so powerful that an enemy should have two chances to completely negate the damage – once by denying the summons at all, and second by being able to kill it or dodge it after it’s summoned and before it does any damage.

I’m going to pick on thieves a little – where is my chance to react to a thief backstabbing me out of stealth? It does far more damage than my phantasms, and I have no chance to deny the attack.

I can’t speak for the Ranger. I don’t know much about that class past level 7 haha.

Mesmer…it’s kinda tough until you hit level 40. Mesmer’s are really make or break based on traits.

In dungeons I think we add utility. Feedback is great for ranged mobs, null field is great for condition heavy encounters. Chaos Storm if you have staff is great….and Time Warp is really awesome when you’re fighting bosses. Focus is another great utility weapon especially when you combine your temporal curtain with your warden.

You’re right that we are lacking in AoE. We have to kind of work for AoE. Our only abilities are shatters, iwarden, and iberserker. I guess you could consider chaos storm one too.

I think PvE is a bit more difficult on Mesmer..but maybe that’s because it’s the class I started out with, and at the time I had no clue what I was doing. When I was leveling I felt like I lived at the waypoints.

The phantasms and illusions can sometimes pose as a problem in story quests and mobs in general. They have a habit of spawning far away from you and aggroing additional mobs.

In PvP, I can let the PvP gurus comment. I suck at PvP. I feel like I get my a— beat no matter what I do. I’ve watched the vids of how to do the rotations, etc…and doesn’t always play out like I envision in my head.

I don’t think I picked the Mesmer because it excelled at anything. I really picked it cuz I liked the style. I love playing a mind-fu— character and I think I would play it regardless of how crappy they make it.

Your class can use the #2 sword skill to port to the target, do damage, and then click the button again to port back to your original location. If someone blocks you when you port to the target you still get to port back. All aspects of that ability were not shut down from one block/blind/aegis etc….so it’s kinda funny that you come on this forum trolling about dodging and landing attacks.

Yeah that’s happened to me several times where I create an illusion in downed state, and OH NICE someone to the rescue to revive me. Only problem is they went for the clone.

Warkupo you’re the one with the failed argument about why summoning an illusion is an attack. That specific act is not damaging you. Later the phantasm will attack you…that’s what should be blocked not the actual summoning. Case and point: A thief has a sword skill where they can port to you, do damage, and then port back. If someone blocks the initial attack he can still port back to his original location. The other 2 aspects of that skill are not shut down because someone blocked just the first part. Why are Mesmers treated differently with their illusions?

I’ve said it over and over again YOU DO NOT TAKE DAMAGE when we summon a phantasm. The phantasm has to attack. If you dodge the attack then fine I get it. If the actual summoning of a phantasm is considered an attack then I should also take retaliation and reflection dmg, but I don’t. You know why that is??? It’s not a kittening attack! I know anet is calling it an attack and so are the other people who couldn’t figure out that the person dodging and casting other abilities was the real mesmer. So an entire class had to get the everliving kitten nerfed out of them to cater to the bads. You can put kittens in the oven, but they’re not going to turn into biscuits just like you can call the summoning of phantasms an attack, but that doesn’t mean it’s an attack.

I really love the Mesmer and I want to play the class, but until this gets fixed I’m playing my alt.

Try playing an Engineer and having to fight a thief who constantly goes into stealth and teleports behind you. Every time I try to use a skill and he teleports\stealths…it goes on the full cooldown without the skill firing.
Even if there is another person standing in the exact place the thief was when he disappeared; nope no effect; skill fail & on cooldown.

Casting a phantasm is not an attack. I know people including dev are calling it an attack, but as the saying goes, just because you put lipstick on a pig doesn’t make it a woman. It’s still a pig. I don’t suffer retaliation or reflection damage when casting it, so why all of a sudden is everyone lumping the actual summoning of the phantasm as an attack? What damage is your character suffering from this “attack”? I don’t get why this is so hard for people to understand.

You’re bringing out an attacker yes, but the person is not suffering damage until it is actually out and attacking. If it truly were an attack by summoning it, then I should be suffering retaliation and reflection damage just by summoning it before it attacks if my opponent has those buffs. crap…i probably just gave the devs another stupid idea…..

No….you could still summon the illusion…the illusion’s attacks were interrupted, yes, but not the actual generation of the illusion. I think they should be treated like pets and not like attacks. You can’t block necros, rangers, and theives from generating their pets why are mesmers blocked from doing so?
1) Thief pets have large cooldowns, low durations, and are easy to kill
2) Same with necro pets, except for the added fact that necro pets have godawful AI.
3) Rangers keep their pets out constantly and they rely on these pets for 45% of their damage. They don’t teleport to their targets, instead they have to chase them down and hope they stand still (ranger pets can’t hit moving targets).
Mesmers had these nerfs coming.

point 2 – hmmm godawful AI…never happened to a Mesmer!

point 3 – We rely on our phantasms and illusions for our damage/utility/survivability. The only phantasm that “teleported” to its target was the iberzerker…after that it had to chase after it. Warden appears next to the target too but it’s not mobile. As the OP said…they didn’t fix anything but they screwed us with a blind now taking out 3 abilities from us at once. What other class is denied three skills from one blind?

Dude what is your vendetta against Mesmers? You keep posting the same incorrect information over and over again in several threads.

MOA has a 180 second cooldown; mesmer can’t move while casting it; has a long cast time; you can run/sprint away & attack with it; it is easily avoidable….basically IT SUCKS and it’s an elite skill.

Time Warp – 10 seconds of faster cast times on a 210 second cooldown. BTW if all Mesmers are using the oh so powerful Moa that you describe then they can’t use this skill because they’re both elites.

There’s no way clones can destroy a bunker in less than 10 seconds. They have to be generated and then each one hits for about 1k in full Berserker and if traited. If the Mesmer is traited for an additional shatter on himself then that’s 4 hits for about 4-6k dmg total. What bunkers are getting wiped by this?

An iBerserker traited for faster GS skills can be generated once every 20 seconds. It would only take like 2 hits at the most to destroy a phantasm. I really don’t think this one skill can bring an entire keep down.

Mesmers max distance on their ranged is 1200 with the exception of a traited pistol. The iDuelist can hit at a range of 1500. Not to mention it’s usually buggy as hell. Half the time if someone runs away or stealths it just stands there looking stupid.

I LOVE the butterflies! I don’t want them removed. In fact, I want to farm for the legendary staff so I can have rainbows and butterflies too haha. My only regret is that I made a big bulky norn. I wish I had made a Sylvari instead because they have culture gear that would look appropriate. I know it sounds a bit effeminate, but how degrading is it to get your kitten owned by rainbows and butterflies hahaha.

Sylvari have cool looking culture gear. However, if you’re going for kittenty femme fatale look than human is your choice. It’s the only armor piece that shows under boob.

I’m currently using the shatter glass canon build, and I do like it, but for some reason I can never stop playing with the talent calculator (instead of doing work at work).

I was wondering if anyone has tried something like this in PvP and what their thoughts were. My initial thought is, 25% extra damage from 4 mantras and 3 illusions = OMG WTF PEW PEW….but seems like you’re giving up some major utility by losing things like null field, feedback, decoy, etc.

I don’t mean to be Debbie Downer, but I’m inclined to think that it doesn’t update for iDuelist. Right now the model doesn’t update based on any other pistol we have equipped. That would be awesome if it made the same sound affect x 3 duelists though haha.

If the player can’t see you, then he can’t very well anticipate what you’re doing in order to dodge your attack now can he? I mean did dodge become an unlimited ability that didn’t require endurance to use or something? I’m so glad I can just roll around on the floor until a thief wastes his back stab. Didn’t know that was a counter.
