Theres no incentive to go to Orr or anywhere else in the game aside from map completion or daily karma jug everything you need is in Fracture (misspelled on purpose because all the dungeon has done is fracture and segregate the player base). You’ll earn more gold per hour running the dungeon that you would running DE’s or farming t6 mats so all you’ll need to do is play the TP for more gold and your T6 mats.

The whole Lost Shore update and everything changed and manipulated since release such as DE farming , Loot DR, Bot policing has been a complete boondoggle all in the name of corporate greed.

except that plenty of us are leveling out there really calmly and Orr never had a lot of people in it, because it’s a painful zone…

nobody can solo it.

False.

I went into Orr with my ranger and obtained virtually every map location and skill point solo. And the only times I didn’t get something solo, it was only because other players stumbled onto the scene at the same time as me.

It is entirely possible. You just have to be clever, take your time, and be very, very careful about your movement so you don’t pull excessive mobs. >_>

That said, I remember being extremely put off by the waypoint contesting in Orr. It’s very frustrating when the map is full of contested waypoints, and most events to retake them are not designed to be defeated solo. It just tells me that events need to be redesigned in general. The “meaningful impact on the world” thing is great and all, as is the notion of “naturally formed groups”, but designing the end portion of your game around zergs that may or may not be coming is not good design. Events need to be scaled such that it is difficult, but entirely possible to beat them solo if you’re skilled. That would give players like me a sense of achievement when I clear out a camp solo, while still keeping content difficult as intended.

how did you solo Lissa to get the skill point she sits on if you need to guard 3 places while doing damage to her?

TL;DR – These zones are working as intended, it sometimes just requires a little luck/patience to get a group to do what you wanna do.

No it’s not, a warzone is one ARMY against another, not one sucker versus an entire enemy force. Malchor’s Leap or the Straits don’t work because nobody goes there, and nobody goes there because there is no reason to once you have managed to get through them.

There’s no reason to go there before you get to them. You can just flat out never go there.

Ignoring a problem is not fixing it. Most people like the level 80 zone. There’s a dungeon and always a nice amount of people. You go trough Malchor’s Leap and the 70-75 zone to GET there. By not going there you can not a) do the world completion b)mine extra nodes c) run an extra dungeon d) get into a zone with high population, lots of people and events. There’s a lot of reasons to actually go trough there at least, but it’s really annoying.

if you’re no longer having fun…why play? this game has a rather large audience from casual mmo player to grindfest mmo player to dungeon crawler and people after ‘phat lewtz.’ anet can’t please everyone so invariably, someone will get angry. if those players don’t vibe with this game…go play something else.

This is the same snide comment made when others including myself tied to tell Bioware that they had serious issues with swtor. And guess what? EVERYONE did leave and play another game, so be kitten sure you want what you’re asking for here. You want everyone who has an issue with the game to bail ROFL you’d be like the hardcore swtor lovers who watched the game rot and die.

Guild Wars 2 is MY game, it is YOUR game too. We bought the game we play the game so when someone takes the time to point out a serious flaw in the loot system in an MMO that recently nerfed drops, be silent of you’re not coming up with solutions.

The drop rates are a joke roll back to September rates pre loot pinata patch, there, problem solved. See how easy it is when you’re constructive?

I know a person that is still playing SWTOR and is enjoying it. 80% of SWTOR players left in protest because of Mass Effect 3. There were even forums and videos about it at the time.
What I’m seeing on the forums is a lot of entitled whinners. “It’s all because of the cash shop”, “I want them to remove dungeons”, “I’m saying that this game is all about grinding, but when they introduced an anti grind policy I’m going to tell them that they did everything wrong”. There’s no satisfying these people. The same way that yesterday on the stream of Kerbal Space program some people started swearing and threatening the developers because they were showing a Kerbal maker instead of the game. They were also rushing devs to release it, even though you can buy and play in beta and receive FREE upgrades that are expanding the game. You know what they got in return? They got told that if they decide to be kitten again they will be blocked. ArenaNet is too patient. Plus I bet if they would say that people would rage with “I’m quiting then”. Well quit. I personally want them to quit. Maybe if 40% of the players left we would have an enjoyable game where people are glad about the free content and not whinning like a little prick.

Two words should be avoided at all costs … “entitled” and “entitlement” they make the user look like a lemming that parrots current trends in political jargon. Sorry but the use of these word became popular by Republicans slinging rhetoric for people that lack the ability to use critical thinking.

Those “entitlement” programs that are “out of money” are not out of money because of legitimate use. Congress borrowed 2.7 TRILLION dollars out of them and did not repay it … there is your shortfall. Feel free to use Google and educate yourself before continuing to use either of those words and making yourself appear to be yet another lemming on the jargon bandwagon.

As to the OP … agreed. DR and farmcode is soul crushing at best. It also looks bad when the game company actually sells gold if they LIMIT how much you can generate by playing in a legitimate fashion. There is nothing worse than killing a mob and having NOTHING drop. They preach no grind and that is the very epitome of GRIND.

Why does a player need gold? Want tier 3 armor? You need gold. Want a commander icon? You need gold. Want a legendary? You need over 1 THOUSAND gold. Anet most definitely coded a NEED for gold into the game. When they limit and SELL at the same time it is very easy for people to view them in a very negative light.

I am personally down to grinding gold for my precursor (dusk) and have all other objectives completed. Unfortunately the price of the precursor is out pacing my capacity to generate gold. Yes, that is a REAL issue to me and all the other people in the same boat that I am in.

Why do I need a legendary? I don’t and neither do you. However, we don’t need anything in this MMO or any other MMO now do we. The legendary is about as cool looking as you can get in this game and the devs went all out making them (thank you Anet) so I would actually question those that don’t try to get one before I would get all high and mighty and play the “you don’t have to get one” card.

Anet created a need for gold. We are happy to grind for it … for God’s sakes take the boat anchor off us and let us do it.

The problem is with the word “grinding”. Why do you feel the need to grind? I did practically nothing yesterday – ran fractals twice, ran AC once and played WvW for about 4 hours. I got 9 rares (I’m geared for magic find) and I sold them for 6G. 6G in a day is not bad in my opinion. And then I hear about how people can’t make money.

Im a guardian, I can solo a young karka with only losing 5% hp. I can face tank a Vet karka with only using hammer auto attack and AH (though a dodge now and again may be involved). I can tank 5 young karka at the same time and come out laughing.

The only thing dangerous about karkas are their 1 skill. Wall of Reflection = instant win.

They should have just made this into a dungeon level difficulty area. Its too boring as it is. Not much variety. Karkas are no challenge at all.

Mobs too difficult? god no. GW2 battle mechanics means you have to be a bit more proactive then to just click and attack like other MMO’s. Learn to play. You will live longer.

Well unless your a guardian and can just tank through just about everything in the game. Its understandable why we got the nerf bat so many times

So you are just the best of the best of the best, good for you to think like that. What about the squishy classes? A lot of Squishies feel the damage is to high for them. Get off your high horse. Just because you can waltz through the area, it doesn’t mean everybody can.

The damage these beasties do need to get toned down some.

As an elementalist and my friend mesmer we both were able to solo drakes and normal karka. Not veterans but normal ones. That zone is not that bad.

The point is for the people in the first month who cleared it to see the content and then never come back.

You know. Like Orr, where you’re headed. Actually, like everything outside FotM now that 90% of the game outside LA is a complete ghost town and not worth visiting.

The thing is that besides the group events that are respawning other zones are prepared for low population. I have characters in low level zones and mid level zones (only 2 out of my 5 chars are level 80) and you can solo those. It’s nicely balanced that you could run it even if you’re the last person on Earth. Not Orr though. Orr is a horrible zone when it comes to low population.

So why is this a problem? You don’t HAVE to play in Orr, or visit the maps. You can just go to Queensdale, or Plains of Ashford, or any of the other zone of the map.
Stop asking for everything to be handed to you. If you WANT to do the maps, then you have to work for them.

if you want full world completion, then you HAVE to enter Orr. It’s also a pain in the butt when you’re running trough ALL of it just to reach the level 80 zone. Those two maps (70-75, 75-80) suffer a really bad design and are intended for a lot of players to be running them constantly.

You can play the game without world completion, you don’t NEED it.
Get a guild, or go get a group in LA if you can’t solo it.

nobody can solo it. I was lucky to catch a busy day when there was a whole 10 people there. We retook the Lissa place by every single waypoint having one of us defending it and 7 of us attacking the boss. That was tough as hell. It’s not a problem of “you don’t have to” it’s a problem of that zone is not balanced and always lacks population. To be honest I only wanted to get the full explore once. My other characters will never set foot in there. Most people think that way and it’s a pity, because there’s extra nodes of ori there and if more people would actually go there we would probably see ori and tier 6 mats prices decreasing.

I actually explored it all and quickly grabbed a waypoint in the level80 zones, because the waypoint next to the exit even got contested.
They made both – 70-75 and 75-80 zones hardcore. There are the infested zones, the war is raging there. They were imagining that both of these zones will be heavily populated with players, however most people if they want to farm will go straight to level 80 zone and if they want to mine ori then Karka zone and level 70-80 zone are both friendly for that, so there’s no reason besides full world explore to go there. There was a topic about this somewhere before, but I’ll repeat on what I said – they should probably cut down on the amount of enemies or somehow make sure that there ARE people in those zones.

you can STILL earn gold. Do NOT grind. Grinding is not fun and will only make you rage. Select an activity that you like – fractals, jumping puzzles, exploration, WvW, dungeons. Harvest EVERYTHING. If you have a profession – do not sell mats meant for that profession. If you’re getting low level mats in the area that you’re leveling in and rushed your profession forward, do not buy, wait till you go to the area where you get those mats. Buy only if you need lower level mats then you’re getting. Now if you’re certain that you will not have a profession that require the mats that you’re getting you can sell those. Example: if I’m a leatherworker and am not planning on getting a jeweler I will sell jewels that I’m getting from mining. Only salvage if it’s worth it. If you’re getting green/ yellow drops that sell for good coin, sell them, not salvage. Exploration gives the best rewards really.
My main and one of my alts are level 80 and now I’m mostly enjoying running dungeons and running fractals. On a good day my income would be 2G/ hour. However I don’t expect that. I don’t expect good days, so I run just to have fun.
Never concentrate on the idea that you NEED money. Try to relax and just play to have fun. Eventually you’ll be able to buy or make the things that you want to get the money for, however they’re not going to run away. If you will concentrate on just getting money you’ll have no fun.

Mirta , you’re saying you would quit if it took that long to max lvl, or if the game was boring during that?
If you’re having fun while lvling, and it was taking months to get to max lvl, you can sit there and say honestly that you would still quit?
Keep in mind on this okay? Keep in mind that you are “HAVING” fun during the whole time while lvling.

the only real long leveling curve that I saw was 80 to 90 on WoW and Runescape. It gets really frustrating when you invest 8 hours questing in order to get higher level and do more fun stuff (like dungeons and raids) only to not go up by even a level. Runescape had its own problem of you have to raise too many skills that are a complete grind (example – cooking and fishing). I’ve been in a Russian MMO (forgot what it’s called), gaining a level will take you longer than WoW last levels, but in order to do quests you have to be 2 levels higher than the quests. I quit in that one. It would be really tough to implement an extremely slow leveling system and still make it interesting, rewarding and fun.

the number 1 problem is people rushing through the content and not enjoying the journey.

This is kind of the problem, but you’re looking at it from the wrong side. The Dev team should have lowered the lvling WAY down in this game from what it is.
I’ll get a lot of hell for saying this, but that’s what’s wrong with pretty much all MMOs nowadays. They spend all this time making a wonderful world to play in. After that though? They allow everyone to get to max lvl within like 2 kittening weeks.
Bottom line is this. Should take hardcore players like 4 months to get to max lvl. The rest longer.

One of the main reasons I hardly play anymore. Nothing to do.

If it would have taken 4 months to reach max level I would have quit a long time ago. There are free hard core MMOs with a very slow leveling curve. You might want to take a look at that.

I would like to correct you on some points

“2- Unfair sPvP, dead tPvP and useless Heart of the Mists:

sPvP: It is unskilled and boring. If you know how to play, you will be a hunter, if you don’t, you will be a prey, simple as that.
tPvP: It take ages to find another team to fight against.
HotM: Useless training zone if you can’t 1v1 with someone to learn the basics with a human, not a silly NPC."

If it’s so unskilled and boring how come me and my boyfriend managed to find our perfect build for every class and were pawning a lot? And no, you don’t need to be a ranger. Mesmers, engineers and necros have this friend called condition damage. Thieves work by doing quick damage and running away. Elementalists have multiple builds that make them good for multiple things. Warriors can go for both – straight plain damage and condition damage. Guardians have a perfect build to counter warriors – knocbacks and heals – you do less damage, but don’t die from warriors. When there’s no difference of gear, all you can count on is SKILL. The thing that you said that place does not use.
Fighting against NPC isn’t useless as well. It gives you a nice feel for how much damage will you be able to do in the real thing.

“3- Dungeons:

Story mode is getting pointless (already got, maybe), hundred tokens for each piece, for each dungeon. Doing the same thing, over and over again."

Normal people drop by, do a run and do something else. If you decided to repeat it multiple times daily, it’s your problem.

“5- Griding:

Karma farm, gold farm, tier 6 farm, dungeon farm. Doing the samething, day after day, over and over again."

Once again – grinding is only there if you choose to grind. I’m able to get materials and money no matter I do WvW, dungeons or high level zones.

“6- Trading Post:

Many item’s prices are too high other are too low. Game economy is badly balanced."

Game economy mostly depends on the players themselves.

“8- Empty PvE zones:

Some zones are empty of players, some events can not be done. It’s time to full-fill a map merging servers, trying to keep it always full."

I would not want my server merged. I remember when the game launched it was overflow everywhere. I’m thankful to only see 10 – 20 people in each zone now. It allows you to actually kill mobs and do your thing.

I’m going to agree with you on 10, 9 does not bother me, it’s not a dice roll system of Morrowind, you miss if another player blinds, stuns, etc. But one can still complain about it. 7 I didn’t notice them being slow. We’re being updated on news fairly often and this site is full of moderators, admins that keep track of the topics and certainly notice it. While things can always be better, it’s certainly no EA. 4. Fully agree on it, but the game has only been out for 3 months. Give them time. 1. Did not experience it myself.

Well, either they got fed up with that DirectSong thing (players keep complaining about the service), or he can’t do any better.
Soule is a great artist, but after a while everything he does sounds mostly the same (several GW1 and GW2 tracks sounds way too similar to Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights tracks). He has so many repeating patters that one can hear 10 seconds of a composition and know it’s from Soule. There’s a limit to everything.

But worry not, because we already have a track for Wintersday, called “Christmas”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpYfUi7JEY

This track, clearly inspired in “Carol of the Bells”, plays in Wintersday-decorated towns in GW1.

that’s…. Pretty. Now it makes me think that when the Christmas event reaches a town I’ll have to stand there for hours just listening to the tune.

Basic Format:
1. Had the game from Beta, but I’m only playing it for a month because my PC was a bit ruined before
2. about 180
3. I remember having about 9G and spending it. I don’t keep my gold in the bank normally, so I average on 3 gold on a character.
4. I have 2 max level chars at this point
5. 70-80 zone, farming trolls for powerful blood if I feel like it, AC dungeon because it’s fun, I’m not that worried about money, but if I seriously needed it I would probably run fractals as well because I tried them and they seem fun.
6. No clue what MF is O_o
7. never
8. never
9. 4, while running AC dungeon
10. I don’t expect to get any, so if even one drops that’s good with me
11. none
12. I craft a lot. I only have two crafting professions on level 400 though – tailor and chef
13. If I know that I’m going to need them I save them up, if I feel like I won’t need them any time soon I sell them. Example – I have a leatherworker, but she is only a beginner and because I already outfited all the squishies that me and my boyfriend has I feel like selling gossamer is better than saving it up. Lower level items like cotton and linen though I keep.
14. yes
15. Bugs. Story is kind of annoying to do when you spend 30 minutes just to have an NPC bug out on you.

I somehow agree achievements are mostly fine
but I disagree with endless salvage and daily monthly sorry they are not achievements just forced grind

achievements should be what you achieve lets say you finished clock tower that is achievement but not daily / monthly that is just point grind …

daily/ monthly is good for karma. If there was not a single repeatable achievement after getting full map completion getting karma would become hard if you don’t feel like running dungeons, therefore it only makes sense that that is there, especially when monthly has more than one criteria that you have to meet.

yes then reward should be only karma + mystic coin and not achievements points …

I think what OP is trying to say is that Legendary items should be earned, not bought. As it is alot of people have partly “bought” their legendary. I think the hardest part is the precurser, maybe it should be a selectable reward in exchange of achievement points, and make it account bound. That way a true legendary is earned not bought.

With the black Lion salvage kit you get an ecto 100% when salvaging exotics

Um, no, I picked up an exotic in factals today, used a BLSK on it and got 1 ancient wood …

They are not in charge of the Trading Post. The economy purely depends from the players, having in mind that it’s players selling to other players and there’s no base price.

That’s not entirely true, the prices are a question of supply and demand, and ANet alone controls, or let’s better say limits, the supply.

Supply has not changed for a while now. With the black Lion salvage kit you get an ecto 100% when salvaging exotics and master salvage kit mostly spawns an ecto. The amount available depends on players willing to salvage, because usually selling an exotic is worth more. If the price continues to raise and reaches 1 gold, it will start falling again, because people will salvage exotics instead of selling them.

Also it’s so much of a grind, because it has nothing that you need in it. The stats are the same as on exotics. It’s just a way of showing your dedication to the game or in other words “my kitten is longer than yours”. Real Life Money is the easiest way to legendaries.

You can’t buy everything with them if you do it legally. Badges, dungeon badges, skill points and karma needed can’t be bought. Of course it might pay if you bought it off a bot site, but that’s risking a lot. Otherwise to get the mats you would spend over 500 dollars and I don’t know a single person that can spend this much on a skin in a game.

I think this game is full of grind, no question about that.

I think grinding for mats and requirements for Legendaries is fine.
I think grinding out dungeon sets via dungeon runs is fine.
I think grinding out mats for other exotics should be kept to a minimum.
I think the grind for ascended gear is way too much.

There is a lot of grind in this game. I laugh everytime Anet says theres no grind. There definately is, and most of it is still OK. But then I hear obsurd statements like Grind and Cash shop. Nothing to do with eachother.

you can not buy anything you need for any of these gear sets in the cash shops, so how ARE they connected? Exotics are easy to get and make, so I doubt that there’s a grind there. Ascendeds will soon be released everywhere so you wouldn’t have to do same thing over and over again to get it. I do agree that legendaries are a grind, but on the other hand, you don’t have to go for a legendary, because it’s just a skin.

Fun or Grind for (little) fun?

@Mirta
I won’t say this happens to everyone. However, if you finished a map for first character, finish the map again for second alt, third alt, and forth alt. The exploration eventually become bored for fifth alt or more. In my opinion, after the first character finished a map, its no longer called exploration for other characters because that will be simply running for unlocking PoI and vistas just for the map completion. Due to this bad design, I have finished Queensdale more than eight times since BWE1. I don’t think its fun to keep doing the same “exploration” for every character. Actually I really want to know what is the purpose for forcing players to do things again and again.

I level my alts in the zones that I like and stay away from full map completion. There’s so many zones that I would not want to set my foot into again. I wouldn’t say that it’s a grind though, because it’s you that chooses to do this. Plus you should be level 80 far before you finish the full map completion again… Also tried crafting for exp? This game feels best when you’re doing a bit of everything and are having fun, instead of focusing on one aspect of it (exploration).

how can you grind for exploration? If you want to explore the full world and are playing it for fun then how is it a grind?
It took me 2 days to outfit 3 chars in crafted squishy armor. It took the same amount of time for my Bf to make me exotic weapons for those said 3 chars. It’s not hard to save up or to find mats. Malchor’s leap had it raining tier 6 mats for me at one point.

Legendary before getting Exotics? Normal?

well there’s nothing wrong in not having exotics and instead just aiming for a legendary in any case if he hasn’t got exotics, there are so many ways of obtaining them that you would think that the game is making it rain exotics. The most efficient way would be to craft them, however if he made the legendary on that char I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t have armorsmithing. Unlike squishy armor, heavy armor can be a bit costly, so easiest it would be to aquire it from loot drops/ karma or dungeon tokens. Found a really good team for AC yesterday, ran it 3 times, took us a bit over an hour and bam – insta 180 tickets. So if every day you ran several dungeons by the end of he week you would probably have a nice amount of tokens and gold, making you able to afford some pieces of armor with tokens, some pieces with gold.

Level descaling in my opinion

Mirta.5029

Level scaling allows virtually the entire world to be used as end-game content. You can find challenges no matter where in the world you go, and can play anywhere without fear of ruining the challenge for others. Dynamic events would become a joke if one high level player was capable of single handedly wiping out an entire low level enemy force.

No it doesn’t. Because the drops aren’t scaled up to their levels. So why would anyone who is level 80 bother with a lower level zone? They’re not going to get anything out of it.

I run low level dungeons for fun, plus you would return to low level zones if you’re doing full explore.

in WvW as a level 40 with upped level you can defeat level 80. While you can’t stand a chance at level 1, the fact that you do stand at level 40 with level 40 gear shows how little impact gear has.

I’m level 80 with full exotics.

I’ve never once been defeated by an up-scaled enemy with inferior gear. A lvl 40 in lvl 40 gear is a free kill for me.

Gear makes a world of difference. Not sure how you drew your conclusion…

because I KILLED actual level 80s when I entered WvW for the first time? I leveled there from level 40 to 60. It was fun. I got lots of kills on people. Now I have exotics myself and die as much as I did before. Are you playing a warrior by any chance?

No I main a thief. (Don’t hate, I don’t use the BS build)

Just last night I won a 1v4 in WvW. 3 of them were up-scaled and it’s the only reason I chose to engage them. 2 of them were squishy as hell and went down in my initial daggerstorm attack. If they were at least the appropriate level with max gear, I doubt the outcome would’ve turned out the same. That’s all I’m saying, gear has a fairly large impact.

except that people with good builds without the gear can still get kills. I was a squishy elementalist when I leveled. And not the immortal water build either.

It’s an economy balance. If there was no descaling level 80s could run in, 1 hit kill everything and flood the market with crap and mid gear making it really cheep and making lower levels unable to make money.

If its the type of friend that likes loot grind WoW or rift does it better than this. Or borderlands/torchlight if they aren’t into MMO’s.

If they are after PvP I would recommend EVE or to stay away from the MMO genre until CCP releases their new MMO because they seem to be the only well funded MMO company not making PvE MMOs.

If they are after epic story telling, bioware is still king imo.

So in short, no. This game is a jack of all trades that doesn’t do anything particularly well and that is something very hard to recommend to anybody.

Bioware… Mass Effect 3… Never buying a single product from them anymore. They’re a fail company now, not a great storyteller.

My favorite quote from the AMA was: " we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve."

So, they are going to be a game with a gear grind but novel in having zero gear grind. I am still playing and truly enjoy the game in the game. But, I’m an altoholic and sadly won’t be able to sustain several level 80 characters with their version of gear grind without a gear grind. Ascended gear, judging from the zero grind for the initial three pieces appears to be the mother of all gear grinds.

“Zero grind” – because thousands of ectos are going to fall in your lap while you just have fun…

you can buy it or salvage every exotic and rare drop you get. Just completed Malchor’s leap, it’s raining high level mats there. While mats might not be items, but you can sell mats and buy items, so yes, you can get ectos without farming.

Infusions are only good for dungeons. Now tell me do you need exotics to get ascended? Do you need blue to get green? Do you require green to get yellow? THAT is vertical progression. You will NOT need the beginner infusion to get the masterwork infusion. The same way that I can run a dungeon with greens and get ascendeds. Call it a grind if you want, but you can’t call it a vertical progression if there’s no requirement of owning something previously to get the next tier.

Obviously you do not see how FotM is set up. To reach deeper levels, you must have infusions. You need to reach deeper levels to get certain drops. Eventually, getting Ascended gear is going to require other Ascended gear. That sure looks like that is the plan. They are probably just testing the waters and will decide later if they will pull the trigger.

level 5 – 10 fractal you have ascended drops, level 11 and onwards there’s agony. You should have enough shards to buy infusions before then. Ascendeds are only good for that – dungeons. I don’t know why people want to get it without running dungeons if it’s only useful for dungeons though. I don’t see the problem.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

they haven’t even decided what they’re going to do. It’s possible that the moment you’ll enter a new continent you’ll have to reach level 80 from level 1 in there all over again. So in Tyria you would be level 80, in the new continent you would be level 1. I don’t care either way, because if they raise it up to 90, I’m just going to continue playing the game, so what’s the difference? It’s just extra gameplay. In no game do you sit on top of a pot of gold for hours after completing the final level. You get a final cutscene and wait for expansions that will require to once again climb of the pot of gold and do stuff to be powerful. This is the only game where after hours of work you can spend the same amount of hours sitting on a pot of gold thinking “I’m awesome”. I’m all up for new gameplay, whether they will raise the level cap, make you level from level 1 again or anything like that. No need to cry crocodile tears before anything has even happened.

Can we stop pretending like subscribing to a game means you’re forced to play? I’ve played a handful of subscription based MMOs (and in fact, during my stays at Champions Online I subscribe even though the game is mostly true f2p), and never felt like I was forced to play when I didn’t want to. Nor have I ever felt that if I unsub, I can never ever come back. GW2 is not the only game you can decide to stop playing and come back another time. I’m not aware of any MMO that deletes your account if you cancel a subscription to take a break for a few months, so please let’s stop pretending the GW2 is an exception in that regard. Sure, it doesn’t have a subscription, but a lot of MMOs don’t have subscriptions. In fact, a lot of MMOs don’t even have a $60 purchase requirement. So the “you don’t have to play” isn’t some unique feature GW2 offers. Let’s stop talking about it like it is.

well when I was on WoW every time I would buy a month worth of subscription I would feel like I have to play WoW daily to get my moneys worth. While a lot of games don’t have a subscription, there’s still plenty of MMOs that are coming out with monthly subscription. Example – that new EA MMO.

Any game has gear. On this game the difference between the gear is so small that I perform as well on greens as I do on exotics. …

Does your skill go up when you are in worse gear to account for the loss of stats or something?

nope, but you don’t need it. You can kill people in WvW being in worse gear than them, you can run dungeons with worse gear and you can clear areas with worse gear. Very little people actually geared with with exotic. The truth is that the difference between the gear is so low that you can compensate it with dodges. My bf did not even want to bother for going for exotic weapons at first and I’m still wearing level 20 jewelry. It does not make me perform any worse.

Of course you can fight in terrible gear. That doesn’t make it ideal.

in WvW as a level 40 with upped level you can defeat level 80. While you can’t stand a chance at level 1, the fact that you do stand at level 40 with level 40 gear shows how little impact gear has.

There is always vertical progression. What makes it a grind is if it’s a chore. Even Guild Wars 1 had a modicum of vertical progression.

Actually, it’s even simpler than that. What makes it a grind is having a grind.

I find it weird how some people find a grind and I do not. Money shortage has never forced me to repeat one action again and again and again just to increase my gold. I am able to get gold from WvW, dungeons, exploration, events and jumping puzzles.

I’ve played through several MMO’s, arpg’s, and other games with friends and family. Everyone has different preferences around games but most know a good game when they play it. Everyone thought GW2 was a good game. The greatest thing about it was that they were blazing a new path and correcting glaring problems in the genre. Principally, this was around players playing cooperatively with other players as everyone was sick of the culture of WoW. But, it was also around jettisoning the gear grind and vertical progression. Vertical progression actually tends to produce a lot of the behavior and culture problems you see in other MMO’s. Long story short, I would have recommended it heartily to others before the last patch but will no longer recommend it above any other MMO. Now, it’s just another MMO after all, so it would come down to visual aesthetic or something about the combat system perhaps.

I find it weird that people repeat vertical progression without knowing the meaning of it. Do you need rares to get exotics? No. Well then it’s not vertical progression.

I find it weird that people don’t understand that vertical progression is about the increase in power level. You “progress” by acquiring the new tier of gear with the higher stats. No, you don’t need rares to get exotics, but no one is talking about that, we are talking about vertical progression.

so essentially you’re kittening about there being gear with different stats even though the difference is minimal? Okay. Get out of MMOs then. I’m sorry that it’s not communism where there’s only one type of gear and everybody gets the same stats.

Please get out from anywhere where intelligent, cultural people are having a conversation.
I find it funny how people like you actually argued the exact same thing about healers and tanks – because every other MMO has them! You can’t have an MMo without healers and tanks! or without quests! oh wait..!

It’s actually quite saddening to watch how people can’t think out of the box.
MMOs are not about gear and it’s depressing that the whole genre made you think there’s no other way.

Any game has gear. On this game the difference between the gear is so small that I perform as well on greens as I do on exotics. I doubt you will find a single game that has no gear. Heck even planetside have different weapons, but the weapon upgrades do not help you much. The same is here. You will not find a single game that’s RPG, MMO, FPS, RTS thatdoes not have units/ gear/ guns that are different and different in stats and abilities. Not a single one. What you’re asking would make the game obsolete and was never done before. Imagine this – there’s no gear difference, no levels, no numbers. Do you have any initiative to do quests and events? Do you have any reason to play in the world and not in the story or WvW mode?
I find this hilarious. Complaining that there’s stuff to do even though you do just as fine without it and making it a big deal, asking them to do what no game has done before, what would make a lot of the content pointless and not visited and would cut a lot of the game out and calling it an intelligent debate. I would suggest you to play something else, but there’s literally no multiplayer game that I can suggest. I’m going trough all the games that I know and ALL have a variety of weapons and upgrades. Mount and Blade – have the option to get better armor and weapons, Chivalry – you can unlock better weapons, CoD – unlock better weapons, Battlefield – unlock better weapons, WoW – get gear in order to get a higher level gear, Runescape – get better armor, Perfect World – buy better gear with money… If I remember correctly Solder of Fortune 2 in its multiplayer had no unlocks and was as basic as it gets. Play that one maybe?
