Is there an aftercast buff that benefit this trait? You must fully cast spatial surge to get 2 stacks of might and people in the past found out you deal much better dps by pre-canceling it.

But honestly I wouldn’t worry about stacking ele, bunkers hit like wet noodle and recent buff to scepter won’t suddenly make FA meta. My past experience from ele tells me its still considerably rare to pull off big damage against most HoT spec unless opponent mess up or unaware of how FA ele works.

Inspiration still is one of the mainstay traitline in raid (and now WvW) due to its high boon upkeep potential. The 2 GM trait, namely phantasm defender and glamour, needs more features to become build defining traits.

Though I doubt RI’s healing nerf will be terrible. To me healing was never really the strength in that trait, condi removal is. After all most people shatter to deal damage or cleanse high stack condi. It will make shatter less versatile, but won’t nullify that trait completely.

Seeing damage reduction on surge makes sense given it’s unavoidable nature. But making a drastic change like 50% and 33% on precision strike given how much of the sword kit IS precision strike is haphazard to say the least, given the fact that no other classes are being modified nearly as aggressively.

…I agree with your point, but you are being melodramatic. So many builds has been double nerfed or effectively removed in GW2 history its unlikely that the dev is specifically targeting rev only. You want 50% nerf? Maim the disillusion in last year’s patch, or illusionary restoration in this patch. Selfless daring was gutted by 50% 4 years ago, pretty much remove support guard in PvP scene until they revert that trait recently. Most vigor proc traits CD is raised to twice the amount of duration, more or less 50% nerf, in the same patch vigor itself was further nerfed universally by 50%. Even earlier back in 2012 there is dancing dagger 50% damage nerf and cloak and dagger by 33% in one patch.

There are many more examples of 50% nerfs in other classes, you just need to pay a little more attention than I do and you can find a lot more. Its pretty easy to understand, 15% nerfs to SotM before was simply their “small adjustments” to see if it can reduce the dominance of rev in current era, and if consecutive adjustments didn’t work they hit it hard with hammer and see if it works.

As stated numerous times rev has been dominating power roaming builds in all mid-high-top tier level play. It doesn’t take long for players to learn energy management and excel against all other potential power roaming specs (thief, mesmer, warrior) that others has practiced for years. Let’s face it, power rev was always the de facto go to build when you need mobility and direct damage. Why do you think all other classes’ meta is either bunker, bruiser or condi build for an entire year? Thief? Please, most thieves still disengage whenever the fight starts and you don’t really see them in top tier due to how easily good rev can kill them. Dragonhunters? Just play it in mid tier and you’ll see how helpless it can be after DH burn initial CDs.

I think in return rev should really have some form of condi removal in major legends. Doesn’t have to be strong, but enough to support power rev’s sustainability so they can realise the dps potential given how much burst has been striped off. Rev has very unfair disadvantages in too many scenarios, just as much as the amount of advantages they have.

Nothing has been done for power mesmer (perhaps even nerf a bit for those taking inspiration), true. But recent nerfs to other class, most notably rev, might give power mesmer a little more breathing ground. Power mesmer needs alternative reliable way of dealing sustain damage other than burst shatter builds. With recent buff to ele scepter, power mesmer might actually fall to lowest sustain damage of all builds.

As for evade and cc in same skill…there’s a benefit of not getting interrupted unless against shocking aura. Try sacrifice defensive skills/traits for an interrupt builds and fight against decent rev. Most of the time all you do is most likely CC, unable to interrupt most critical high damaging skills.

Btw OriOri, he means signet of illusions, not signet of inspirations. Random acronyms can make mesmer really confused lol.

This is most likely just an initial update and not the whole thing, think of it as a sneak peak if you want.

I wouldn’t comment too much on others before they actually start the season, but most of the changes looks promising, especially mallyx’s long waited stun break.

On the other hand, maybe I’ll try to dust off my odd guardian burn build and see how it goes. Now that it has both the duration and the burn stacks it might be a potent combo if survival-ability is spec right. I can probably boost it to 6-7s burn duration per passive proc, which is deadly when used with symbols’ multi-hit.

Even if teams were able to enter soloQ in the past, it is clearly outside of his premise. You’re bound by your first impression of the past and assume the rest of your argument on that, which is clearly a strawman argument.

Its not hard to stop teamQ from entering soloQ, as ANet decided to implement this season. So do tell me why can’t they make a queue where only 5 men can enter and block 5 men entry into solo/duo queue?

If we can have a successful solo/duo competitive game mode, I am sure there will be more chance to create a team queue in the future.

This sentence makes no logical sense. What incentive is there to risk creating another queue when you have successful soloQ? More population? Note this is more soloQ population if its successful, not representative of teamQ.

I’m a soloQ player and I’ve advocate a lot on having double queue even when others implied this is just a “test season”, simply because removing teamQ generates absolutely no data on teamQ perspectives even if you’re just testing. This is basic research selection bias.

Players can argue teamQ population is too little to achieve teamQ with decent waiting time, but they’re kitten lying to themselves if they say its technically difficult. Generating 2 queues will allow you to consolidate data on teamQ population and its effect on soloQ in just one season, after all we still have people like OP who’re willing to wait (which can do open world now btw) for decent match. But it looks like ANet decides to take baby steps.

Personally I doubt restricted to soloQ will bring back much of the lost population “that teamQ driven away”, players will simply find other things to complain and there are many other valid reasons to leave.

And no, forcing team players to fight in unrank, where we have more people who are testing builds, have no map awareness or no drive to win, is simply worse for both sides of the match. You simply dump the same problems to unranked. These experiences achieve nothing for team players except discouraging them from forming teams.

Should ESL be a reference for balance?

in PvP

NICENIKESHOE.7128

“Balance should be based around top level play/that spec is popular in ESL so its fine”, etc. We all heard these arguments before, but knowing that teamQ will be removed in the following season, do you still believe that team oriented builds seen in ESL should still be a reference for what’s balance or not?

Take necro for one of the best example, its a popular choice in ESL because teams can coordinate its survival and best utilize its team-fighting potential without excessive worry of dying. However, with everything going soloQ this may change. If you Q with necro you often are at the mercy of your teammates. And frankly not every player queue with expected obligation of keeping the strange necro alive. Same goes for more glassy classic builds that may require team assistance to survive (though most HoT builds has decent survival).

On the other hand, top builds shown in pro scenes still define the highest skill ceiling possible. So there are still merits in seeing how far a build can go or how little it goes.

So it comes down to the question I’ve been asking in the beginning, what do you guys think? Can you justify why you believe its the case?

Thing is, mesm is nice and balanced, and then you have portal/CS moa and mesm becomes broken.

Apparently portal made mesmer broken many years ago.

No, it’s simply considered abnormal when chrono gained more 1v1 ability (whether by bunker or condi) since HoT, thus allowing mesmer to hold a point while keeping a portal on other. Before that power mesmer is basically a team oriented build that is easily shut down by a thief, so much that many ESL mesmer players except Helseth (eg. Supcutie) played thief instead.

Even when it comes down to using portal, it generally goes unnoticed unless someone played it as “entertaining” as Helseth, which normally gained much more positive review among spectators than this “OMG OP nerf” thread we get this day.

Clone has roughly 2k hp, died in one hit, phantasm has 3k hp, died in two hits. Saying illusions have strong survival in current meta, where every AoE flies around without brain power, is silly. If mesmer decides to shatter as soon as he summons his illusions, then he becomes utterly predictable, and superspeed does little to address this flaw. In the end its all about knowing your opponent, just like facing all other classes.

I’m all in for nerfing condi mes in line with other meta specs since you’re restricted to play boring sides, with mesmers doing absolutely nothing in teamfights. But power mes need dramatic improvement on survival given how fast they die in current meta. And it just so happened that the only way to be effective in power mes is to significantly outplay opponents. So devs do need to consider that before they put mesmer out of PvP/WvW completely.

Maximum burst has always been hallmark of shatter mesmer for 3+ years. Good thing is that a mesmer only has the opportunity to deal such burst in 10-12s intervals, with lowest sustain damage comparable to a cleric ele. This makes current HoT bruiser/roamer specs like rev have much higher dps overall and less chance to fail.

Any decent player will know to mark a power shatter mesmer once you identify them in the beginning match. As mesmer literally have enough skill defense for 5-11 seconds on 30+ cooldown time (including mass invis) then rest of the fight requires kiting to survive. So they’ll fall within few seconds if opponents do focus on them. Been like that for 3 years and any less attention on mesmer is an excuse for incompetence.

Likewise, ally teams literally need to nurture a power shatter mesmer. Especially when there’s a thief around, since kiting doesn’t work and thief quickly bait out mesmer CDs. Shiro rev also has such advantage over mesmer’s kiting skills since all skills hit +450 range.

There’s a reason why people prefer condi mesmer over power now, from all top teams to hotjoin heroes. Because you need to build a team around the mesmer to utilise its potential.

SoI undo is all that it would take to give Revs a spot back in the group as 100% Quickness uptime with a single Chrono in a squad is realistically impossible. That, and make boon stack cap back to 9 though SoI reversion would suffice. Rev + Chrono wasn’t just for the Quickness uptime benefit but also to copy the boons that a Rev was pulsing.

Unfortunately, those two features are the exact reasons why rev/mes combo is OP in WvW guilds. If only ANet is wise enough to split 3 very different gamemodes……

NICENIKESHOE.7128

You have few misconception about PvE. While it is true every build works in open world, not every build is viable in raid. And options is getting narrower following every patch because ANet is balancing against “OMG OP builds” in PvP/WvW. And…whether you like it or not, majority of the game hours spent by players is in PvE so their financial focus will be directed towards it.

Unless there is a drastic split in PvP/PvE/WvW, it’ll be very difficult to establish an effective PTR server in GW2.

Now some may argue that they did PvP/PvE split, but the difference is so laughable that it’s safe to say skills/traits are still tied up in those 2 realms. Whether this is due to understaff or lack of confidence is unknown, and it is only perpetuated by lack of communications between dev and players.

Indeed there are some lessons to learn from OW, but you need to adapt those theories to GW2 properly since this is an MMORPG.

As for wipe at green AoE in phase 5, you do need to be careful about your tanking. If not careful the green AoE may spawn inside area where floor is about to charge up. NICENIKESHOE.7128

But, if they could do this consistently, this would be the smart way of designing trait choices. Actual choices. You’d love to have all 3, but you got to pick 1.

Not like now where you first decide what type of character you want to play, and then just look up the traits because there’s basically only one sensible choice at each stop anyhow.

Personally I feel like very little mesmer traitline fits that criteria. You can argue that in Illusions but people only really take it for MtD (your only one sensible choice in that line) and to a degree PoM. To me all 3 Illusions GM traits are mediocore when compared to Chaos, which has 3 actual build defining traits.

  • Dueling is probably the second best example: having DE as clone generation in multiple bursts, mantra instaburst, and mistrust for good interrupt options.
  • Domination, while imagined burden is very bad, has mental anguish compete with power block at decent level.
  • Inspiration’s II has huge PvE implications as well as MD for decent phantasm generation, glamour trait falls into the sad cousin category as well though.

As oppose to Illusions…
Ineptitude – has to pair with dueling to have constant application, or else a GM trait that proc 1 confusion every 10s.
MoF – only thing worth notice is AoE diversion, rest is hardly noticeable or surpass by others.
MS – only has noticeable effect on 2 skills, and one of them is slow projectile autoattack.

Personally I feel like all 3 need improvements, something like
Ineptitude – add 33% proc 2s confusion on crit hit, no ICD. This won’t affect current meta mes since carrion has 4% crit chance, but promote hybrid and allow glass condi build (give good burst).
MoF – increase crit chance of MW to 20% (or just make MW blast finisher around mesmer like I mentioned in the past); CoF caused chilled since nobody notice cripple; diversion and distortion stays the same.
MS – changes effect to increase torment damage by 50% when wielding scepter like we were shown in trait rework sneak peak. This promote scepter use, actually synergise with other condi traits in same traitline, and provide decent sustain damage as oppose to my proposed ineptitude.

A few problems here.

One, rev spamming Banish Enhancement is an energy sink, and a poor use of energy that will leave you with maybe the first three weapon skills to use. Same with Pain Absorption and RotGD. Yeah, it’s nice, but you’re not looking at the costs of these things.

Two, ventari’s block is about all the legend is ever used for.

To do these things, rev is forced into a whole range of skills that may not be useful in ANY way, but if you want that mobile projectile block, you have to take the rest of the skills too, which may be useless to you. Apply this with any legend, having something useful that you want while having X number of things you don’t, and more often than not, these niche situations don’t warrant the ‘baggage’ that comes with what you want.

I like the class, and want to see it do well and be properly balanced, but simply having the tools doesn’t mean they’re good if you can’t apply them effectively. On paper, it’s really nice and has great potential, but we all know it ends up with the same builds over and over, there’s a reason for it.

You’re probably talking about PvP or some scenario where you can’t swap legend at will, but I’ll just talk regarding the scenario that OP stated.

I agree, the key thing is effective management. But in T4 fractal where majority of dps is just autoattack, you can actually live with many useless skills if one or two useful skill is available in each legend. Indeed majority of time I still run herald/shiro since that provide the best breakbar option, but in other scenario other legends do shine.

Take Mai Trin for example, the CD for her high bleed stack attack skill actually matches the time for pain absorption to recharge, and one pain absorption gives enough resistance duration to last longer than those bleeds (better with blind and cripple). If I’m lazy with rotations and don’t want to buff group with herald facets I’ll just camp in mallyx all the time without ever need to swap legend, and my entire party can stack close to her throughout the entire battle, happily dps her with 20 stacks of bleed on me.

Please don’t use banishing enchantment ever in that frac though.

In uncategorised where going through harpies takes up huge chunk of time in pug group (ofc you can always stealth past). Having ventari shield is enough for your entire group to stack during harpies focus fire, which btw without toughness or potion can quickly down people in T4. Its is even more useful when fighting mad asura which is notably the only threat that could down people during that fight. Such damage mitigation trumps all other useful skills in other legends, as it provides safe (albeit lazy) fight style that has minimal chance to mess up without costing too much party dps.

I don’t use Jalis over Shiro often though. This is because CC always works better than damage mitigation, especially with hard hitting melee vets that can chip away 50-70% of hp in one hit (eg. UB mobs). I do know it has the best dps option if mesmer provide quickness so occasionally I run that in boss fight when having a good mesmer friend around.

Druid is probably the easiest I can think of for new players to get into due to their survival. Only takes a few fight to know when to use what skill and your main damage is from pet. However, it gets really boring after a while and people who are experienced in fighting druid (and not running condi) will quickly overcome you.

Alternatively, if you’re facing new players majority of time, running DH will give you easy profits. Again if you’re facing those who are experienced in fighting DH, there’s little you can do but to up your game and grow out of that noob stomping build.

I hear the main trouble is the 5 target buff/heal limit that forces mirror comp.

If the limit was 10 targets then roles wouldn’t need such duplication.

5 boon stack cap, not target. There’s always a target limit hence rev/mes was running their own party in standard 4,2,4 comp, which allows you to buff 4-8 other people on multiple SoI uses and TW in the past)

As for healing, its actually not the best idea to upkeep facet of light unless you run healing gears. Reason being that you rarely exceed mesmer’s healing power (who gained 300 healing power from trait when maintain 3 phantasms), so your regen will be override by mesmer’s phantasms. Right now with mirror comp there’s even less reason to upkeep facet of light. To answer OP’s question, unfortunately with the nerfs to SoI and changes towards mirror comp, the only useful facet available are facet of nature, facet of darkness (less relevant if druid spam tiger skill), and facet of chaos. Rev is ranked 4th in pure dps atm but warrior and druid brings a lot of support.

Yes if you have sigil of strength it is not hard to get 25 might since each proc gives 16-20s might (depend on if you have food or not). But you can’t share that sigil might and OP stated without weapon sigils.

In actual raid/fractal scenario in the past, it is more or less a waste of sigil spot since rev/mes combo can give 25 might without weapon sigils. Now just have one PS warrior (power preferred) and you’ll never have to worry about might, probably can even save that upkeep cost on facet of strength.

The true thing that hurts rev presence in raid is, ironically, the mesmer’s signet of inspiration. Without its might share and with the quickness cap, it is now impossible for mes/rev combo to keep quickness and might on majority of members in 10-men party. So optimal build shifted towards 1 mes in each 5 men party as a mirror comp (2 mes total), and rev becomes obsolete when that duration demand is reduced.

Despite it means rev is not the optimal choice in raid, that doesn’t mean rev is terrible though. Any one who just pick up rev and has a good build can still consistently pump out 25k dps. Since all you do is auto-attack you can easily focus on boss mechanics as well. A bad ele who can’t get rotations right can drop his potential dps from 35k all the way down to 20k, not to mention engi with even higher skill floor. So personally I still feel rev is the top 4 pick in terms of dps.

And I still use rev consistently in T4 fractal due to amount of utility it brings. Ventari on furnace/uncategorised, mallyx on Mai Trin, Shiro on hard hitting vets during cliffside and UB. Rev still provides a lot of support without losing on the dps as oppose to say druid, though I won’t deny that condi druid is rising in presence.

The good things elite specs did.

Sword + longbow condi warrior was a thing for a while, and is arguably one of the most effective build at that time since you can pump out quick bleed stacks and good burn stacks against foes that doesn’t have accessible condi cleanses at that time.

Now warrior just have every effective condi slap into one skill…on one weapon that doesn’t do condi damage outside of primal burst.

As for mesmer and ele…

Mesmer got a new bunker role back in S1, which is then pretty much removed. Not much change is done on power shatter’s playstyle but condi more popular following it (note its already popular with trait rework, they even have to “hotfix” MtD). Interrupt mesmer is effectively deleted since HoT due to stability/stun break access to all professions, so I’m not sure I like the tradeoff.

HoT does turn ele into the most effective healbot in GW2 though, back then D/D was more of a bruiser and only have a handful of skills that can heal teammates. Other than that overload definitely posed a harm to ele’s old playstyle, since the longer CD and overload channel time work against ele’s skill alterations. You may argue its a completely different playstyle, and that its easier for people to get into ele now that overload contains so much reward in one skill. But overall it doesn’t provide a viable playstyle outside of healbot. DPS ele (regardless of weapons) is still food for majority of professions, and bruiser build diminishes when celestial ammy is gone.

Revenant post patch Oct 18th. Boons nerfed.

Might doesn’t have 5 stack cap. Or else you won’t even achieve 14 stacks. I’m not sure how you achieve 25 stacks of might independently.…

  • shared empowerment + facet of strength can only achieve 14 stacks max in 100% boon duration, this is the same pre and post patch.
  • UA can add 5 stacks of might for 16s in 100% boon duration, but it’s widely consider as dps loss compare to auto-attack even if you have nice might stack number. This is on 12s CD.
  • Activating facet of nature is 3 stacks of might for 12s in 100% boon duration. This is on 25s CD and is still not recommended unless you must.

In all cases I feel like there is a misinformation here. Mathematically you cannot consistently maintain 25 might stack independently (or achieve it for few seconds following 2 UA and facet of nature). Even if you try to pursue it you’ll have significant dps loss due to lost opportunity of more damaging auto-attacks. Your past perceived 25 stacks of might is most likely due to mesmer’s Signet of Inspiration, which does share stacks and effectively multiply 14 by 2. Now it won’t share stacks so you can only achieve what rev done best in its own highest dps rotations, roughly 14 stacks.

You can still achieve other boons permanently in herald without much effort. Since facets do pulse 3s boons every 3s. Essentially herald playstyle hasn’t change one bit, you pop facets and just auto-attack. That 16% duration decrease is only noticeable if you pop facets’ active form which is not recommended in group setting unless you really have to (eg dying and must pop facet of light).

Bridge runes while farming for Leadership?

you could go for runes of herald, which provide very high protection uptime if you consider heals in your usual rotations. And you also don’t lose out too much boon duration compared to durability. Durability is still a decent option ofc, and I wouldn’t say which one is better than the other.

I’d actually pay to have diviner/seeker stats enter PvE/WvW. True utopia where everyone is happy.

Patch is slightly better then I expected

Thanks for the answer! Should be able to do it then :P

Just something I saw in Reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/58lr54/chrono_rotation_with_rune_of_the_herald_70_prot/
This is interesting post that my guildie shared with me, since you can share roughly 5s protection each time you use SoI. Combine with mimic and you should be able to maintain high protection uptime, and mimic+SoI+CS also make up for some of the lost quickness.

Just sharing this if the group need some defenses, it might be a very viable choice if you have no time to farm leadership runes.

3 Month Balance Patches

They don’t patch quickly because they have to wait to see how the meta shifts.

There have been a slew of cases in gw2 history where the meta doesn’t pan out till months later.

Examples Chronobunker was a day 1 of HoT build but it wasn’t commonly known until over a month after HoT dropped. Macebow condi warrior was also a day 1 HoT build and that thing wasn’t commonly known till season 2.

LoL does rapid balance because the game’s monetization is built off people buying champions (classes) for real cash, so it’s in Riot’s best monetary interest to make sure the meta changes as much as possible, regardless of whether those meta changes are actually fixing anything.

With the amount of things they changed in this patch, it can hardly justify “waiting for meta to shift”.

Reminds me of their AMA since PvE/PvP split, they did say in the future they’ll only make changes similar to what we got in that patch, which is also unbelievably small. For 2-3 seasons ele is still brought for healbot, mesmer for portal and rev with roaming and power dps. Essentially the grand meta hasn’t change and you only have 2 remaining spots of wiggle room.

Ofc when we talk about soloQs it gets messy because people were sorted according to their MMR than class, but you still have 1 healbot, 1 roamer and 2/3 bruisers. That stale state is one of the main reasons why so many were saying that patch balance is basically wheel of fortune/misfortune.

DH symbol build is another popular option that also hard counters mes. Since you can literally keep a symbol on cap point for eternity (matches skill CD), it cleaves out most if not all illusions sitting on it. This means if DH is half decent enough to save their blocks for mes burst, then mes has literally no sustain pressure on him.
