fps drop with patch

I don’t know if one of the mini patches changed anything but I didn’t crash at all in LA today (I used to crash literally every 10 minutes which was kind of annoying). I wasn’t around the zerg as much so it may just be that.

Thanks, ANet

3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac with 8 GB ram and GTX 680MX (2gb) running 10.9.1.

LA has caused the 10 min interval crash for me for a very very long time (even on my old iMac and yes I’ve reinstalled the game several times yada yada).

It is why all my characters escaped from LA over half a year ago.

Edit: I do crash when booted up on windows too but that usually takes hours, not minutes.

Thanks, ANet

Now I just hope they fix the crashing after 10 minutes bug. I’ll take 10 minutes of playable frame rates over what we were getting but it could still be improved. WvW nights I’m still going to have to use Windows though because I don’t want to punish my guild by having their healer be constantly stuck in queue due to game crashes.

Yeah, the flickering bug is really old (used to be much more common too). I haven’t experienced it in months, myself. It isn’t just a mac problem (not sure if Macs get it more often than Windows users, though).

You should make how you want your content more clear. Say something like, “Where is my playing months old content with occasional expansion packs?”

There fixed. Don’t act like waiting for an expansion is suddenly a bad thing. If guild wars 2 had a traditional expansion model we would have had an expansion by now before the game became a “boring grind”. Which is exactly what the game is now because of LS.

Besides, with expansions you at least CAN play months old content, with LS most of it is temporary.

But seriously, this isn’t a content issue. This is more of a delivery issue it seems.

It is both.
Notice how even one expansion has 10 times more content than al LS patches combined?

I never said it was a bad thing. I was merely flipping the exaggerated complaint in the other direction in an effort to illustrate how exaggerated it was.

My new iMac had no issues at all until the latest patch (that includes a bug or several that is going to be fixed). And remember, Macs can still run Windows (my iMac can run GW2 on basically max settings without an issue under Windows 7). The main thing that causes a performance hit for the mac client is that the port isn’t a native mac port (it uses a wrapper). So you will see an improvement running the game under bootcamp but it is up to you whether it is worth rebooting to play the game (for me, I was absolutely fine not rebooting until this patch).

So there is absolutely no reason to get a PC if you don’t want one (getting Windows is up to you, though).

I think the only way live events would work is if they were common occurrences so people don’t zerg the zone. For them to be common they’d have to be relatively simple (essentially almost like the events that players throw…doubt players will ever be able to make events in game but it is an intriguing idea).

I think that was code for, “It’s a good thing because it reduces the cost of having a Mac port to the point where the client can exist.” not, “Our programmers are gods who can code the entire game in FORTRAN in their sleep. Mwahahahaha. Even now they are reprogramming the Matrix!”

I’ll take what I can get, but I hope some lessons were learned to avoid such game breaking bugs from hitting us again even if we continue with this type of “beta”.

If I may make an analogy…

My husband and I both have razer naga mice. I am left-handed and he is right-handed. Last summer, Razer released their naga for left-handed users. For that, I was very happy. However, once I paid for the mouse (same price as the right-handed model), I expected it to work just as well as the right-handed model. I would not be grateful just to have it if it was constantly performing at a subpar level and occasionally failing to work all together. Even if it were free, I would not be happy with it if it performed like that.

With GW2, we all knew it was a wrapper when we bought it, but we expected an optimised, fully supported wrapper product. That is not what we got. The lack of a mac team and, if the assessments of this transgaming are near accurate, explains a lot.

If, as they keep saying, the mac market is important to them, I hope to see strong improvements in the future. A game client should be transparent and the only thing we should think about is the game experience itself.

I’m not apologizing for Anet (seriously, look at my post history). But I’m trying to frame this in the right light so we have an an effective relationship with Anet.

Anet, for whatever reason whether it was being extremely optimistic or not understanding the mac gaming market, publicly released a very slap dash cider port that looks like it was a skunkworks project done by one developer in his free time.

We took this to mean there would be some sort of improvement from that state and that this port was just to hold us over in the mean time. Maybe that was the case. Maybe they hit some sort of legal issue or something (it wouldn’t be the first time a Mac port was destroyed due to stupid reasons… e.g., Torchlight 2). We don’t know. And honestly, Anet may actually be unable to tell us. This entire thing could be a run away train, if we’re going for metaphors.

Now then, that is why I keep pushing for alternate ways for Anet to communicate with us, in case there is some sort of reason. For instance, change the name of the client from beta to hobby. Yes, this probably won’t work in real life but it is just my lame brainstorming. And since we do seem to have some channel of communication open with Anet at the moment (the most we’ve had since launch) now would be the time for them to try to communicate what is actually going on with us.

Anet, we did not decode what you’re trying to tell us over the last year. We’re not sure if you’re flirting with the mac game community or if you are just being friendly and wish we’d go away (if we’re going for another metaphor).

As for what we can do, we need to be open to try to see it from their point of view (as hard as that may be with as little information as we have). That doesn’t mean we have to agree with them, but we should try to understand instead of just railing on them with no attempt at compromise.

Historically speaking, this is more than we usually get. Kind of depressing but whatever. Anyone have any ideas how we might fix this partially on our own? Like, is there a way we can somehow use an old version of the game (we were using an old version back when the mac patcher was screwing up)? I doubt we can, but it doesn’t hurt trying weird things at this point.

Sent a PM to Gaile to see if this might be a possibility or at least to get some visibility to this post. Her response, “Sorry, that’s not my area of expertise.”

Feel the love everybody, feel the love….

It’s been painfully obvious we’re the “your call is important to us” territory for a while now. Really, the options are either try to find fixes on our own, make ANet aware, and just wait it out for a few months or quit the game. There really isn’t any point making demands because that kind of assumes they care about Mac users to any degree. Once we start seeing things like patch notes that detail expected bugs and areas for us to test in this “beta” or them renaming the beta to hobby or whatever I’ll at least have some faith in ANet to tell us the truth/have some level of communication with us. Until then, really don’t try to communicate with them on any meaningful level because you’ll just get frustrated and angry. There is no point in stressing yourself out yelling at a wall.

Edit: And if we do get some type of compensation I’ll take ANet actually talking to us in a conversation as being good compensation.

I… don’t understand. How can anyone ever think this is getting better. How is this getting better? I am not bashing you, I swear. Please, explain to me how is this getting better. Because each new update is sending me into an abyssal depression towards the game’s future, and I am seriously worried about them not actually being able to turn this around away from the incoming crash zone.

Because if LA is destroyed, it means the living story is finally making real changes? At this point it doesn’t matter if other games have already done it, it matters that GW2 is finally doing it.

How is that hard to understand?

I thought we were rooting for more content, not for them permanently removing more chunks of the map for fun. But that may just be me.

To make new content meaningful sometimes things are taken away.

Are you kidding me? I have never seen the such a major city change in games, LA is one if not the most important city in the game and it looks like they are about to change that.

Well you see major changes to the location of the main city all the time in MMOs (essentially every expansion). But I think this is the first time in an MMO the major city was taken away before a replacement city was put in game.

I hope they have some balls and make LA a ruin after at the end of season 1. As Mordemoth is very likely to come at the end of this season (or might be the season 2 topic) it would be perfect to destroy LA for good.

Not just a few destroyed buildings that are slowly rebuild. I really mean burned to the ground.

In a Living Story the world needs to change permanently. I hope Anet really does this instead of reverting it to its former state after the story concludes with a few hints of what happened.

I don’t mind slowly rebuilding (by slow I mean take years) but it should be a complete redesign (current version of the city isn’t that well designed anyway).

ArenaNet is destroying the most convenient hub in the game to craft and congregate so they can push more royal terrace passes and tradesman packages in the gem store.

I would say that there are many places more useful when it comes to Crafting than Lion’s Arch.
Personally I tend to use Rata Sum, it have close connection between TP and crafting and you don’t get all that pointless spam that you see in Lions Arch.

Not to mention the lag around the crafting stations. I “escaped” from Lion’s Arch to the Grove a long time ago.

SteamOS/Linux Port

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nageth.5648

Nageth.5648

Yeah, the Mac port uses a commercialized version of WINE from Transgaming. Currently we have framerate drops down to the 1-5 fps range (not drops of 1-5 fps, drops to 1-5 fps) when you have a group of people (varies in size needed depending on the machine) casting spells. It makes pretty much every medium to large group event impossible to play (WvW, EoTM, Marionette, Wurm).

Before this we had issues where the patcher was messing up and we had to find a work around to manually patch the game to the latest version. It took ANet support about a month or so to fix that.

And before that we had the usual disconnect/crash in Lions Arch issues. And so on.

Essentially, the Mac beta is barely supported (and they never tell us what bugs to expect, we have to discover those on patch day…its like Christmas every patch). You’d probably end up with the similar levels of satisfaction using a WINE wrapper (the mac forums are also pretty good at helping out with custom WINE wrappers since we keep trying to see if we can tweak the wrapper better than ANet can).

Oh and last fall during PAX ANet basically came out and said the Mac port was back burner and they’re not doing any active development on it. So yeah, don’t hold your breath for a Linux port unless SteamOS is huge or Valve pays them a bunch of money to port it.

Please don’t pick up kegs. At least half the people ignore you and pick up kegs.
Please range Warden 3. One platform always wipes because they melee.
So on and so forth.

Why do players in this game have such a problem listening to orders? In games such as Eve Online, if a Commander tells you to do something people actually listen.

Because GW2 is a game for casuals and people that do whatever they want to do. Start a guild and annex an overflow for your guild. Don’t bother trying to pug content that requires a large amount of coordination.

This is an excellent way to make the situation worse in the long term.

What is the problem? There are communication issues regarding coordination of player actions in large groups.

How do you fix that problem? I can tell you hiding in an overflow will not fix that problem.

This leaves us with the question, are we okay with the status quo? Do we want to hide from each other out of fear?

Yeah, it is like people don’t understand that you only lead because people allow it. No one has a right to lead, it is a contract between you and others. Currently, there is no real way to do that in PvE. Buying a blue dorito is not a contract between you and other players. It is bling. Fixing the commander system, frankly, will require a complete overhaul.
