the replies on the thread are just as i expected.
Trolls everywhere trying to justify ANet’s lack of responsibility for the mac community they wanted to bring to the game. Telling you to bootcamp or buy a pc, instead of actually helping the mac players get a working client.

This game just plain upsets me, every time they release a new build i get my hopes up that AT LEAST TO THE POTATO BARE MINIMUM the fps problem will be fixed, but they just release new cash itens instead

I’m going to use a metaphor because I feel like being silly. The best time to point out that your first floor apartment has had a waterfall coming from the ceiling for three years isn’t when talking to your second floor neighbor who has a leaking ceiling after they the roofers put on a new roof.

Eh, I think you might have been better just asking questions in that thread rather than making a bunch of statements. Unless you’re actively trying to warn people that they shouldn’t buy GW2 to play it on a mac for the foreseeable future I don’t really see the point. shrug

I’ve been doing a little bit of research.

When NVIDIA acquired Cider they used the technology for their Gameworks studio. It seems that the purpose of that studio, and of NVIDIA’s acquisition of Cider, is to help with porting games to NVIDIA’s Shield Android TV console. What that seems to suggest is that Cider is no longer being licensed out to other companies to use in the porting of games to OS X (If it still is then its incredibly stealth as there is nowhere that would suggest NVIDIA is doing this). By extension you would assume that the people working on Cider (now NVIDIA) are no longer offering support to existing companies who had licensed out the Cider technology (aka Arenanet). Meaning that any issues with the OSX client are issues that Arenanet is having to deal with themselves.

I don’t say this lightly, but it’s also pure speculation, given that Arenanet probably don’t have the ability to tamper with Cider well enough to actually make the game run well given they no longer have transgaming’s support, it’s quite possible that they are actually exploring other means of bringing the game to OS X (native or otherwise). If they were in fact doing so, they would be unlikely to share that information until such a means of playing the game was actually prepared… It might also account for their lack of commenting or assistance with mac related problems. However, that could also be totally wrong as they’ve always been poor with assisting mac customers.

Either way, I think it’s helpful to have a bit more information/perspective.
Hopefully a more permanent solution pops up soon…

Yeah, I’ve stated this in the past. I’m just worried that what they have said seems to imply that the mac client isn’t even close to even back burner. They don’t even have a timeline for mac updates and they’re barely keeping up with all the bugs impacting the Windows users. We were barely supported when the Windows client wasn’t having issues, I seriously doubt they’re putting much engineering resources now especially since they’re likely shopping for a new porting solution. For comparison, EVE Online is in a similar situation but their devs said something along the lines of they can’t talk about it right now but expect improvements in the future. That is vastly different from, yeah we don’t have a timeline. Basically, if you don’t have a timeline to share just don’t say that. If you don’t have a timeline period, please tell us why.

Edit: And regarding Cider, one of the big users of Cider in the past was EA. I don’t believe EA is using Cider anymore so it may just not make sense for Nvidia to keep the Cider WINE fork going since it is so dated.

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

No mac version? I has a sad.

It isn’t unexpected that a beta client would not be tested on the Mac. It happens all the time (even Blizzard games don’t beta for Mac unless it is close to launch unless it is a WoW expansion). What is disappointing is that the best we get is essentially “we hope to have a timeline someday”. At least they mentioned us in the FAQ, I guess.

Yup, looks like the Mac client is going to get obsolesced into nothing. Great.

Normally, I’d take the “we hope” line to actually mean something if a developer said that about a mac client. Like, we might see something in 6-8 months or so. After 3 years of “beta” though Anet’s “hope” means “give us gem story money, k, bye”.

The fact that they’re moving to 64 bit and they made comments about how few use XP make me extremely worried for the future of the mac client since we’re basically running GW2 on XP with the cider client. The question of the mac client feels like it is creeping towards when and not if they remove mac support.

Even if ANet would really make a 64-bit client against the crashes, there would
still be the problem that Cider is only 32-bit. So you would also have to ask
NVidia for a 64-bit Cider now ..

Unless during this process they also managed to make an OpenGL or Metal port while they were redoing the game engine. Yes, I know the chance of this really small to really really astronomically small (I’d be seriously impressed if they managed to get something that supported Metal out so fast). We can dream of a day where Anet will actually treat us like customers and not like bags of money. Whatever.

And regarding the reply to me about “that is how they get you.”… No, I wouldn’t be fawning over Anet for that. I’m just talking about what would at least get the Mac client back up to playable. I tried doing dailies yesterday and I crashed 15 times over 30 minutes.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they bought it for parts.

Anyway, remember that if Anet is actually negotiating with someone to help them with the port they are likely gagged. I’m not say that silence = zomg native client but just that there are lots of reasons for silence on this.

Hopefully, they’ll some day publicly acknowledge the mac client having issues but, I’d be happy just to have pre HoT levels of crashing at this point.

Yeah, I know the information is there but we really do need something much more visible. I just don’t understand the logic of removing the mac forum because they could put up all these stickies without clogging up the top of the general support page.

Also, I don’t disagree with the feature existing, just the default behavior (since this is pretty much the only game I’ve seen with such a feature).

Yeah, back when we had a Mac forum, we had stickies that outlined a bunch of things you needed to do, such as remove badly thought out default behavior in the settings.

Essentially, go into the settings, scroll down and disable the mac beta features. I have no clue why they’re enabled by default.

(Seriously, Anet, if we don’t have a Mac sticky anymore please remove this default setting. It is the cause of much confusion for new Mac players.)

The problem is Anet is really bad at talking to everyone and then you pile on the mess that is Cider (including how they did a great job destroying all good will from us over the last 3 years) and yeah, I can see why we’re going to get only a token comment every 8 or so months at this point. I’m fairly confident that the game will slowly get better over the next 3 or so months. I’m dubious it will ever be as stable as it was previously because the only reason it was at least semi-stable before was because the old maps are relatively simple compared to the new ones and they’re just going to hit the wall with respect to Cider. I really wonder what is going on some times, devs are acting all weird about Cider ports continuing to exist either saying vague things about improvements are coming down the pipe (source CCP) or nothing at all (Anet). And then Blizzard is suddenly talking to Mac users with legal boilerplate that doesn’t answer questions. Sigh.

Not new for me, lacks coherence all the time.
Did you try textures to low? I know its ugly, but it reduces the crashes a lot.

Believe me, I know all about how to mitigate the crashing (see my previous posts in this thread, in fact).

Setting everything to lowest only gains me like 15 more minutes before a crash max so I don’t even bother. Frankly, the thing that is forcing me to boot into Windows at the moment is how the Guild Treasury UI is busted more than the crashing.

Edit: Well the latest patch apparently fixed the problem. I can’t tell because just before the patch I logged in on the Windows client because I was depositing some stuff to the guild treasury.

Yeah, I actually noticed that a couple weeks back. It is pretty funny that the top hits for Guild Wars 2 on mac is that original announcement and I think some posts on macrumors.com maybe. Then again, ArenaNet has never been particularly savvy at managing their brand online, relatively speaking.

And WesleySnipes.3917, I’m not saying don’t complain. I’m saying you might enjoy yourself more if you reset your expectations. We can’t even expect them to have a relatively stable Cider client, people demanding a native client are just setting themselves up for massive disappointment.

They’re not doing a native client nor did they ever promise one. Many many games used Cider to port. Some are horrendously bad. Some are pretty good. Others fall into the middle area. On top of that you have the problems of an MMO in active development trying to redo large chunks of their game engine (EVE Online is another example of a mac client in a similar spot).

I’m not defending ArenaNet’s behavior. Far from it. But we really need to have realistic expectations. My realistic expectation used to be ArenaNet communicating how they were progressing with the Mac beta. I no longer have that expectation. I doubt they’ll ever effectively communicate anything to us and the game client will continue the pattern of slow degradation with occasional improvements due to them fixing issues that overlap with Windows bugs. They’ll maybe fix things like the Mac Guild Treasury UI too (lol, who am I kidding, it isn’t connected to the gem store UI so they don’t care).

My new reasonable expectation is that they rename the client. Call it Hobby. Remove beta from the title. Call it a meat popsicle. I don’t really care. This isn’t a beta and never has been a beta. I’d appreciate it if they were at least honest with that part.

And still only 1 dev reply, I unrest and you guys are working on all bugs and issues running on the game and its expansion….but how about dedicating just a small fraction of your team to working on the Mac cause….I don’t think it’s that hard considering we have all payed for it.

Couldn’t agree more. If they are incapable of doing so themselves they should hire a company to do it for them.

3 YEARS PEOPLE!

Uh, they did. It was called Transgaming with the product Cider. Transgaming sold cider now, to Nvidia. So who knows what is going on.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. Do you have any evidence to support your claims when historically we’ve been told that the people who ran into issues with key resellers were sold a fraudulent key? The problem with the ArenaNet direct selling seems to be an issue with bank communication (charge backs or fraud alerts). They’ve historically been very good about emailing you about suspensions so the current issues with notification seem to be the exception rather than the rule, so I would encourage you to contact them.

As i have said, i did contact them. They were oblivious to the issue, and since i have some friends with similar experiences, im only saying the most logical thing here.

Indeed. And as I said, I don’t follow the logic. If they said the key was fraudulent and to seek a refund from the people you bought the key from, that would likely be good advise.

@Aerensiniac.3584, this thread was specifically about key resellers (such as Kinguin), not the other issue that ArenaNet is having with their own digital purchases at this time. And yes, obviously not sending people and email regarding account downgrades and suspensions is something they should address and is hopefully an oversight.

They might be going light on the ban hammer due to the amount of fraudulent keys from resellers and just downgrading people to the f2p version of the game. I’m just speculating about this.

Anyway, make sure you’ve submitted a ticket customer support to figure out what is going on. You’ll might have to handle the g2play refund separately and buy from an authorized seller if this is a fraudulent key issue.

Seriously, Anet. I know I’ve said this before but just relabel the client as a hobby client or something. Let us know that you’ll do your best to make sure the client launches (and when it doesn’t you’ll get around to fixing it within 3 months or something). This isn’t a beta and has never been a beta. You are literally the only MMO that doesn’t have a mac forum for mac users to help each other because of this insane adherence to the mantra of all mac bugs are really windows bugs. Yeah, that c000000000000000000000005 error is a Windows XP memory overflow error, I believe. Essentially, the cider wrapper (that is essentially pretending to be WinXP) can’t handle being around more than 5 people for any period of time without crashing (using absolute minimum settings prolongs the time before crash, no other setting combo really helps, in my experience…this is regardless of your computer specs too). So yeah, essentially do not look for those common errors to ever be fixed.

Essentially, this is a problem with GW2 on Win XP/cider and it will likely never be fixed.

PS: while there was never a mac “team” cider has been bought out by Nvidia and the future is extremely murky about cider being supported at all.

I could understand the position at launch. I mean the mac client just sort of popped out of no where and wasn’t really advertised that much.

That is no longer the case.

The mac client was on the official supported spec lists. ArenaNet was literally advertising the game with the mac client as a feature for this expansion. I am completely perplexed how they feel comfortable doing that and then completely ignoring us. It is verging on insulting.

Reminds me of the time when they came in and said how they didn’t have a Mac QA team and acted like it was a great thing.

And look what we have “no mac QA team” 2.0. Crashes ranging from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The new guild initiative interface flat out doesn’t work (fun fact, that doesn’t appear to be a bug for Windows users). And of course the other odd assortment of issues the game has always had due to it being a cider port.

I’m getting extremely tired of this 3 year long “beta” where we’re being swept under the proverbial rug (even CCP can manage to talk to their mac users more than you do, that should be embarrassing). At least Sony admitted they screwed up with their cider client (admittedly, GW2 has never been quite that bad). But yeash, guys. This is not appropriate behavior for customer support. You’re not Google, you can’t run a 3 year long buggy beta with no customer support because you’re not giving us the game for free.

I’m just stating from experience you will get NO information from ArenaNet. The reasons are historical, them removing the mac forum (effectively silencing us), and just general issues with mac game dev (believe it or not, Apple doesn’t exactly make this easy on devs either).

Basically, you’re kind of shouting into the darkness and expecting to have a fun conversation with the crickets. More power to you but don’t hold your breath. Yeah, probably stupid idea but almost anything is better than the current system that requires us exploiting broken mechanics.

It appears to be a problem with games that use cider. EVE Online has pretty much the exact same issue (black boxes and weird textures where text boxes and interface elements should be).

If this is a cider and 10.10.3 driver issue I doubt Anet can do or tell us much as either the problem is on transgaming or apple (or both). Hopefully this gets sorted out before 10.10.3 goes live.

Edit: I’d say issue a bug report to Apple but I don’t know what priority cider games is for Apple.
