Neko.9021

I recently played around leveling in open world Core GW2 and honestly, things hit so softly that there’s very little reason to build defensively while leveling. There doesn’t even seem to be a reason to kite things around. Things just die if you have any modicum of damage.

For your first trait line, just go Fire if you use Staff or Air if you use Dagger. For your second trait line, take Fire or Air (the one you didn’t take for your first). Take “Pyromancer’s Training”, and take “Aeromancer’s Training” if you use Dagger.

Your weapon is the most important part of your build – both statwise, as well as for playstyle. The higher level and higher quality of your weapon, THE MORE DAMAGE YOU WILL DO. Therefore, it is almost always worth your time to keep your weapon up to date, because it will most dramatically affect your damage over anything else.

Prioritize maxing Power, then Precision, then Ferocity.

Seriously consider using MH Dagger. While Staff is an incredible weapon, a great deal of its damage is basically waiting for ticks of Lava Font (Fire Staff 2) to tick on enemies. Dagger, on the other hand, just goes about spamming Lightning Whip (Air Dagger 1) over and over again for lots of quick easy damage to level quickly.

If you at all want more advice, feel free to talk to me in-game (my username is shown right here, of course).

I actually think it’s easier to level with MH Dagger spamming Air 1 than it is with Staff, personally.

Remove fractal toughness scaling

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Neko.9021

Is that hard just to give some mobs/bosses much more toughness and thats it, for the variety? Does all this general downgrade to direct dmg really have to happen?

Indeed. SOME enemies being resistant to direct damage (and some enemies resistant to Condi damage) is fine, if it isn’t all over the place. Making it for all fractals 60+ is huge overkill, however.

Remove fractal toughness scaling

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Toughness scaling is fundamentally an attempt to make Berserker gear and direct damage builds obsolete for high level fractals. But the decision isn’t to stop DPS from being good – instead, it’s to arbitrarily promote Condition Damage as the optimal way to clear high level fractals.

As people here have focused on the fact that high level fractals are pointless right now due to lack of rewards, I also want to bring attention to the fact that high level fractals also arbitrarily favor Condi Damage over Direct Damage for no good reason other than to “challenge the Berserker Meta” (because I guess a Sinister/Viper meta is somehow fundamentally better?)

Regardless, if the developers ever do another iteration of fractals in the future and actually make high level fractals worth revisiting, they should consider removing all Toughness scaling. There is no good reason to favor Condi DPS over Direct DPS.

I agree that having a few mobs or encounters to counter Direct Damage or Condi Damage can lead to interesting variety. However, setting a global rule that from level 60+ fractals onwards, Direct Damage just becomes bad is nothing more than an invalidation of the Ascended Berserker Gear many of us have worked to get, which fundamentally goes against the principle that this expansion wouldn’t obsolete our gear.

Hmm, I’m running something similar myself, with the major difference being alot more focus on auras (tempest (3/2/3)) and water instead of earth due to the otherwise complete lack of condi removal (whereas you already get pretty decent protection uptime from overloading air all the time). Oh and I use D/D because ride the lightning is awesome for getting around.

@vespers

“I may buy the expansion on sale if they add enough to make it worth it to me or i might not given how disgusted i am with the tactics they used in HoT. Quitting the game is obviously not a solution for someone that likes the game and wants to see it be better than it is, but i’m not going to bend over and stretch open my kitten to be penetrated as you clearly have if i disagree with the direction they’re taking the game.”

If I am to understand, you don’t want to quit the game because you apparently like it so much. Enough that you won’t quit it. But you hate “the direction they’re taking the game”, so you won’t buy the expansion. Unless maybe they lower the price a bit, because, you know, your righteous indignation could probably be bought off for a good deal.

It’s honestly very hard to take this seriously. If you hate the game, just leave already. Even my friends who ‘hate GW2’ ended up buying the expansion on the day before release (and surprise, they now get to enjoy ‘hating GW2’ for a good long while, it’s great, really). Now, if you ACTUALLY hate GW2 or the “direction” it’s going in, just go. Seriously. You’ll be far happier. If you like the game (or really, if you like complaining about how awful the game is but still want to play it because you actually like it deep down), then just get it. There’s no way that agonizing over GW2 without its expansion – an incomplete product – will ever give you a satisfying experience.

The Fractal Daily system needs to be improved

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Right now, the Fractal Daily system has quite a few problems.

First, the “choose any 3 fractals” from X tier daily is quite problematic. People will literally just choose the 3 easiest fractals they can do. These dailies are even more stagnant than the old system.

Second, the “suggested daily fractal” only pulls from fairly low level fractals (below level 50). There are also too few of these, in my opinion.

I think a much better system would be to have something like 10 Suggested Fractals for the Daily to replace the current system. Each time you complete a Suggested Fractal, you get a bonus reward chest. The more fractals you complete, the larger your reward gets.

This would be roughly equivalent to the system we have currently (3 Low Tier, 3 Mid Tier, 3 Higher Tier, 2 Suggested Fractals), but actually encourage people to DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN SWAMP 3 TIMES A DAY.

Each of the suggested fractals could be drawn from each decile of fractal levels:
1-10
11-20
21-30
31-40
41-50
51-60
61-70
71-80
81-90
91-100

This way, the number of fractal dailies available to a player remains proportionate to their personal reward level (as it was in the old system).

The exact number of daily fractals can go a bit up or down, and when bonus reward chests are given could be played around with. Some other possible formats:

  • Have 9 Suggested Daily Fractals, and give a Casual, Adept, and Master chest after completing every other 3 Suggested Daily Fractals. Choose the 9 from 1-100, but ensure that 6 of them are below 50 so that lower level fractals remain more accessible. This option retains a moderate amount of fractals and favors low level fractals for a wider playerbase.
  • Have 5 Suggested Daily Fractals, choose from 1-20, 21-40, 41-60, 61-80, 81-100. Give large reward chests for each of these, with larger rewards for higher level fractals. This option keeps Fractal Dailies short and simple.
  • Have 14 Suggested Daily Fractals, one for each of the kinds of fractals (Volcanic, Cliffside, Swamp, Molten Duo…) Pick these randomly from all across the spectrum. Pick 2 from 1-10, 2 from 11-20, 2 from 21-30, 1 from 31-40, 1 from 41-50, 1 from 41-50, 1 from 51-60, 1 from 61-70, 1 from 71-80, 1 from 81-90, and 1 from 91-100. This option lets players spend a long time on fractals.

Whatever system is used, I think it’s better to lean upon a Suggested Daily Fractal system than a “choose any fractal you want” system that just encourages picking the easiest fractals all day. I also think it’s important to have Suggested Daily Fractals for levels above 50.

Casual PvE Air/Earth/Tempest

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

This is not for Dungeons or Fractals or Raids. This is just for those who are struggling to survive in the new maps and want a survivable and easy build that tags well.

The Tempest offers a new playstyle in PvE in perhaps one of the easiest to run builds ever. I present to you my build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQJBIhdSfJUgJ2fJYhJwhJWaAM3J7m9zOsC6AhQhCQA4DC-TxRGABA8gAGS5HI7PQmeCDOhAAq+jUKBJFQgTtA-e

(The editor is not up to date, and “Earthen Proxy” should actually be the trait “Invigorating Torrents”)

This build offers effectively 100% uptime on yourself of all of the following boons:
-Swiftness
-Fury
-Protection
-Regeneration
-Vigor
-Might (often near 25)

The build relies on the fact that the new shouts make it easier to give yourself more auras. Combine this with the fact that overloading also gives you some boons, and with the longer boon duration from Imbued Melodies (Warhorn Trait) + Bountiful Sharpening Stones + Fried Golden Dumplings, you can easily sustain permanent Protection on yourself.

The advantage of this build over other bunker style specs is that it still has very good sustain, even in Berserker gear, mainly due to the easy access to Perma Regen and the fact that “Wash the Pain Away” is a very strong heal (and also great team support if running around with friends!) Furthermore, your earth trait “Geomancer’s Defense”, gives you 10% damage mitigation against nearby foes. Combine this with Hardy Conduit (+7% to Protection damage mitigation), and you are essentially always taking 50% less damage from everything.

This build is also team friendly, giving quite a few boons to allies whenever you use your shouts, and also able to break stun with “Eye of the Storm!”, and if your teammates need a heal, using your Heal Shout to heal them can often save them quite a bit.

(In fact, this build would be really great if Heat Sync actually DID something -_-)

Regardless, I think this is a great casual build to run around with if you’re finding it hard to survive. Also, running around with perma boons is really fun.

The main way you will play this build is trying to get off Air Overload as much as you can. Use Lightning Whip for general sustained damage and waiting for Air Overload. Once you complete an Air Overload, swap attunements, use some skills, and go back to Air Overload. This refreshes the cooldown of Air Overload, and allows you to use it again in 6 seconds. This allows the build to maintain somewhat respectable damage despite taking so many defensive traits.

Overall, I suggest this build to anyone who wants to get some use out of their new Tempest line, and just wants a relaxing stroll through the new maps, without having to take forever to kill everything.

If they significantly nerf the dungeon rewards, it’d be a pretty bad move, in my opinion.

The dungeon rewards definitely need to be rebalanced to take into account dungeon data run averages since the new reward system was first implemented.

But something like removing all of the guaranteed gold rewards would be pretty bad. Mainly because, for the general community, it will be hard to find players for dungeons if there is no monetary reward for them anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if, after this update, given how much more rewarding the rest of the game is, the average player won’t be able to find a pickup group for a random dungeon. To me, that’s a real shame.

After 3 betas, thoughts on Tempest in new PvE

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

In PvE, your biggest problem isn’t getting CCed. The sheer time investment (6 seconds of waiting and 4 seconds of channel) and trait investment (all of your Minor traits) into overloads is a big enough problem that it’s hindering the Tempest from being strong enough in a PvE environment. The effects honestly just need to be buffed, because the Tempest needs another meaningful effect on top of its abilities in order to be worth taking over anything else (including a Core Ele).
