This is pretty good honestly. Before you could dodge roll while inside the Static Field. Now you cannot. I’m glad they did this.
Lol, I’m amazed you were even able to find this post from about a year ago. Still, I’m glad you like what my past self a year ago came up with.
As an ele/mes main for 3 years I had to drop both classes. Mes because the direction chrono went is amazing but for some reason I just don’t like it and I can’t explain it. Mes engi and necro have by far the best communities as well. On the flip side I love tempest but the ele community is harsh and for the most part bad. If you don’t like tempest that’s fine but calling it trash when it dominates in pvp and pve is just stupid
Ele community is bizarre. Even being the best at everything isn’t good enough for the community.
Hardy Conduit’s Protection Effectiveness Increase is only supposed to work on Protection which is applied to the Tempest themselves (but any source of Protection is affected). However, I haven’t done the testing myself to see if that’s true or not.
I like Overloading. It’s a lot of fun.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
ANET FIX THIS! T_T
While I’m quite happy to see aura visual noise nerfed, the removal of Shocking Aura’s audio cue makes it pretty hard to know when the effect is going on. While before we had a similar problem (too many auras on at the same time lead to it being impossible to see what aura was on without looking at the buff bar), at least the audio cues of the auras provided a way to know what was going on. The audio cues still exist on the other three auras, to varying degrees. However, missing the sound on Shocking Aura is going to lead to some pretty upsetting situations where you literally just never know if an Ele might have shocking aura or not.
Use soft CC like Cripple and Chill and Immobilize to keep them still.
Right now, Ele’s role in raids is to be ranged DPS during Gorseval and Sabetha. ^^;
Heal and CC
T_T The squishy members survive because there is a tank and a healer to protect them. The healer incorporates Healing Power and the tank incorporates Toughness. Is that not enough?
In order to beat the raid bosses, you need a healer and a tank. Admittedly, in GW2, the healer can also be the tank.
But you need DPS, dedicated healing, and a tank to control aggro. Seems pretty trinity to me. The fact that GW2 has its own take on how these things work is besides the point. Each game decides how they want to interpret the concept of trinity roles in a game. Regardless, most groups that succeed in the raid encounters have been doing something like this:
- 1 Healer (99% of the time a Druid, admittedly, but the occasional Tempest has been known to show up from time to time)
- 1 Tank (Many classes can actually do this just fine. This role can also be consolidated into the Healer role as well. Classes that do well include, but are not limited to, Engineer, Mesmer, and Guardian.)
- 8 DPS (All classes can do this)
If what people wanted from raids was a trinity in GW2, they got their wish in raids. The “meta” of raids is most certainly a trinity. A hard trinity even. Most groups have a dedicated tank, a dedicated healer, and everyone else dedicated DPS. There’s nothing soft or “pseudo” about it.
Tempest does not have a Shout CDR trait.
but tempest is garbage and underpowered and does everything baseline d/x ele does but worse? it has lol damage and no support? warhorn has no place in the game? tempest will never be taken for any meta groups for raids or pvp?
tempest all day
Hehehe, indeed.
The GW2 Wiki is VERY reliable: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page
Wait, you don’t have Trait lines equipped? No wonder you’re dying!
Open your Hero Panel (press H), click “Build”, and under “Specializations”, select some specializations (I forgot they’re called specializations now, but still, what I said should still hold).
Pick three trait lines. Fire and Air are damage, Earth is defense, Water is healing, Arcana is utility.
I’m talking about the trait lines.
For general open world, assuming you only have Core GW2 (no HoT), try this build:
*Fire – top, top top
*Air – top, mid, mid
*Arcana – mid, bottom, top
And use Dagger/Dagger (use Dagger/Focus for dungeons and fractals).
Use Berserker gear for max damage.
Your goal with this build is to cleave enemies with Air 1, Lightning Whip. Swap to other attunements for utility and burst damage, and once you crit, you can go right back to Air Attunement for more Lightning Whip spam.
Druid.
Tempest healer seems OK on the first boss, but all of the raid encounters are DPS races, and Druid gives DPS boosts, so Druid is better.
For DPS, use Particlar’s D/F Ele in the description: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=elV5EiNU4dM
I actually beat the Vale Guard with full Cleric’s Ele. Druid is better due to damage modifiers but Ele healing is pretty OK actually. Still, in my opinion, if you’re Ele, you should go full Berserker, since Berserker Ele is really strong against the last two bosses.
Focus, mainly because Focus Air 5 is a GREAT Breakbar breaker.
I don’t actually think Arcana or Earth are good over Fire. Go Fire/Air/Tempest all the way. But I just thought it’d be nice to share the builds we used for our Vale Guardian kill (much easier than the other two bosses).
Your utilities are probably best left as “Wash The Pain Away”, “Rebound”, “Ice Bow”, “Glyph of Storms”, and… something. Dunno what else. Maybe the earth shout for the immobilize?
And of course all Berserker gear with a Force Sigil and Scholar Runes and such.

Updated to add a third build our guild ended up using.
Tempest is fine. It’s used on the top teams of PvP and Raids. Can’t speak for WvW/GvG though, I suppose. But for the things that matter, it’s great.
Rebound should work like the Fractal Singularity that, if you would go down, instead:
- You become Invulnerable for 2 seconds
- Cleanse all conditions
- Go to 25% HP
Has anyone actually gotten past the first boss with this build?
GW2 definitely needs to be more color blind friendly, and this raid highlights just how bad it can be. +1 to bringing attention to such an important issue.
The DPS Ele used Dagger/X.
And here were our Eles:
- Cleric’s Tempest – Healer
(Myself. Honestly, not sure why I had Diamond Skin when there were no condis.)
- Berserker Tempest – DPS
(Our other Ele used Flame Legion runes cause too poor for Strength and didn’t feel confident enough to maintain Scholar :P Also Gale Song should have been Unstable Conduit but whatever )
We killed the boss a little over time (a couple of seconds after Enrage triggered).
Overall, I wouldn’t suggest an Tempest Healer over a Druid. I wouldn’t suggest an Ele taking Arcana over Fire for a DPS spec. Especially since we were over the time limit.
But kitten, this is what we used to win, and I’m proud of that. So here it is.
(Also, we are recruiting – I’m working on the recruitment post but for now, if you’re interested in joining us, message me on the forums or in-game.)
Edit: Beat it again, and this time I ran Berserker Tempest (on my first try!) with yet another defensive Ele spec. Actually ran my casual Air/Earth build XD. By the way, Gorseval is way harder and none of these builds would be good for that. On the bright side, Fire Staff Ele seems very good for that fight.

For raids:
Tempest is a worse healer and doesn’t give damage modifiers. There is no debate here. Druid is a better healer if looking for someone for the heal role.
The nerf to AF today is irrelevant for raids. There’s so much ambient damage that the Druid should have 0 problems building up AF.
Honestly, as an Ele main, it kinda annoys me to see people trying to promote a Tempest healer, when Druid is so much better as a healer. Ele is a fine class and has its role to fill, but that role is NOT main healer.
Why are you blaming your guild’s kittenty policies on the raids themselves? It’s your guild being dumb, not the raid.
Tempest seems pretty bad for the Vale Guardian encounter, but really strong for the Gorseval encounter. What this means is that to fully utilize Ele, it’s best to keep it as an alt for certain encounters where there are big enemies that don’t move much, and then swap to another class for encounters where the enemies have smaller hitboxes and move around more.
Furthermore, if you find if you are struggling to stay alive on Ele, it’s probably best to just not play it, honestly.
Let’s be clear by struggle I don’t mean “always dying” I mean constantly having to switch away from fire and use heals, which lowers your damage.
I could survive, I just couldn’t maximize my damage while doing it.
If you’re spending time healing yourself by constantly swapping away into Water, then honestly it’s still probably not worth it. That’s a huge damage loss. Presumably your healer and your ability to play at range should prevent you from having to do that. But if that’s not the case, then Ele isn’t worth playing.
This is your guild’s problem, not a problem with raids themselves.

Ele seems fine. Not the best, but not the worst. It was used by some guilds for some raid kills:
Sickest Guild’s Gorseval Kill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g53PpgdgGjs
Immortal Kingdom’s Vale Guardian Kill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elV5EiNU4dM
It seems to be that Ele does pretty poorly on the Vale Guardian fight. However, for the Gorseval fight, the large hitbox of the boss and the Wall mechanic makes it a good encounter for Staff Ele.
So overall, it’s seems pretty OK!
While older food has ICDs, newer food seems to no longer have an ICD.
This is mainly problematic with foods like Slice of Allspice Cake and Fried Golden Dumplings.
Food shouldn’t be so powerful. ANet should be putting an ICD on each and every food proc.
Druid by far. Better healing, better damage buffs.
Do not roll a Tempest Healer.
The build you’re looking for is here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/Condi-Tempest-Build-for-PvE-22k-DPS
Full Berserker for Ele. Condi Ele is more of a specialized thing for high level fractals.
Your sturdiness comes from your defensive Focus skills and your Support giving you boons/heals.
The video I linked shows one player using D/F Ele in the first Raid fight to good effect.
The whole thing is ill conceived from the start. You should be using Sinister/Viper for Condi Damage. And even then, Ele is better off playing Power if it can do so, usually. And even then, the Condi Damage Ele uses Dagger/Focus.
There are probably 4 good Ele builds right now for DPS:
-Fire Staff
-Scepter-Hammer
-Dagger-Fresh Air
-Condi-Dagger
Of these, Fire Staff is going to struggle due to the moving enemies. Trying to deal with Hammer sounds like a pain. So Dagger-Fresh Air seems like the way to go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elV5EiNU4dM
Looks bad. Low damage honestly. Dire Staff Ele isn’t going to do much.
But it JUST OCCURED to me that no one has posted what Eles should probably be running in raids if they want to be DPS (D/F Tempest).
I should probably get on this.
This was a really cool instability. I did 59 just fine with it.
It’s all gonna be about that Exalted Gathering \o/
